What I enjoy about Tsang’s work with porcelain, is the fragility of it compared with the repetitive patterns and simplistic use of monotone. They have an allure and intrigue that invites you closer, like leaves blowing gently on a tree. Tseng is primarily a site-specific artist, based in California who uses the porcelain in various shapes to create the installations.
What I found interesting was the simplicity of her work, but this approach has captivated my attention and made me want to have further involvement with porcelain. The over thinking that sometimes is involved with myself in creating, would adapt and lend itself to a streamline process involving shapes and patterns. The image below of the white oval pieces with the singular gold piece, has a nod to kintsugi without it being so and the overall image has a soothing and delicate effect.
The frayed and blue is individual pieces of carefully manipulated porcelain, which have been shaped to resemble strips of material, collected together, to form something which again looks tactile and more something that you would have as a rug.

Frayed: sky view is part of an ongoing series exploring the possibilities of porcelain both as a sculptural material and as a painting surface. The porcelain is first rolled out and then torn and pinched and otherwise manipulated by hand. The strips are then fired, some are glazed, and then dipped and painted using inks and acrylic washes. 48" x 66"  June 2019

ReCheng Tsang
The delicate movement and light washes of ink in Tsang’s work reminded me of the life studies of Schiele and Rodin.

ReCheng Tsang- Sky, Blue. Porcelain on felt, ink. 12” x 12”, 2014.
Tsang creates sculptures made from ceramics that imitate softer materials. What appears to be strips of dyed fabric is actually porcelain pieces with ink washes, attached to a piece of industrial felt with metal pins.
This makes me think of how the drawings of Rodin are an important part of his sculptures. There is a connection between the hard materials he sculpts with and the soft, malleable paper on which he creates his studies.

ReCheng Tsang- Sky...View topo blue. Porcelain, acrylic wash, ink, stainless steel pins, industrial felt, 36” x 48”, 2015.
Tsang’s work often consists of several hundred and sometimes thousands of individual porcelain pieces. Each piece is manipulated by hand, rolled, pinched, pulled, and torn.

Sky view topo red II (This piece reminds me of fruit peels, perhaps oranges and lemons).
Her website states:
“She explores the intrinsic quality of porcelain, malleable and impressionistic, to create work that is tactile and sensual.
She is also interested in the dichotomous relationship between the porcelain’s hardness and permanence, and the resulting work which appears to be delicate, ephemeral and in motion.”

I like how Tsang’s work appears to be something it is not. Her work appears ephermeral, like it could be made of natural materials. The texture and form of the individual porcelain pieces reminds me of fruit peels. I would like to look further into ephermeral art.
EXPERIMENTATION
Using torn up card with washes of felt tip pen and water, layered and stuck to a piece of card.

Not a massive fan of the final result- I used a rainbow colour palette because I thought it would look fun, instead I think it looks quite juvenile and reminds me of the DIY crafty watercolour books I had when I was wee.
If I were to go ahead with this idea i would definitely use a limited colour palette or possibly stick to a monochromatic theme.
