If Only for One Evening

Carol chewed her lip and watched as Daryl struggled to make the pasta sauce obey him. She brought the kids back to their home from school and found him cooking. Judith grimaced and told him to let Aunt Carol help. He grunted Don't need help, I got it as she took RJ to their room, his eyes never leaving the sauce.

Now Carol lingered near the front door, her eyes on the gruff man concentrating in the kitchen. They only shared distant conversations when they met in passing, and yet she felt a surge of affection for Daryl at this moment. His hair was stuck to the sides of his face as he furrowed his brow at the boiling pots before him. Aromas of acidic tomatoes mingled with spices filled the space. The counter was a graveyard of vegetable scrapes and scattered seasonings.

His sleeves were pulled back to his elbow, and his sweater was covered in red splatters. His eyes darted back and forth from the sauce to the wilted paper with a scrawled recipe in his hand which she only assumed he had acquired from Nabila or Aaron. Or C0nn^e.

He poked at the pasta boiling in another pot and growled every time he dropped a noodle before catching it. His last attempt was valiant as he slowly pulled the noodle up with a fork before it slipped from his grasp. 

“Get out here, you little shit!” he growled in frustration, trying again.  

Carol couldn’t help but giggle at his look. “Seeing you like this and not being able to help – it breaks my heart." She failed to keep the laughter out of her words.  

“Stop,” his reply was quick – like a reflex.  

“Are you sure you don't need help?”

He hummed absentmindedly, zapping the humour out of the air, barely looking up from the sauce. 

She still stood by the door, her eyes on the pot as the scent of charred onions and tomatoes rose up. “I’ll–uh–leave you to it then,” she turned towards the door.

“Wait," he sighed, his shoulders slumping. “I dunno what I’m doing.” Daryl shook his head.

"I need you.” His voice was urgent, eyes had hints of desperation that she knew only had to do with the sauce before him. Yet, settled heavily in her chest. 

For a moment, their eyes locked, and she waited to see if he'd amend what he said, but he stared back silently. Words escaped her as she was transported back to a time before the Commonwealth – before she broke them. 

He blinked at her lack of response and looked down. “You don’t gotta–”

“ –Step away from the sauce,” Carol interrupted quickly. She hooked her canvas bag on the wooden coat rack behind her. He stepped back when she came to stand beside him and turned the knob on the stove to let the sauce simmer.

Carol added the pasta water and deglazed the bottom of the pot. He observed everything she was doing quietly. As she scraped at the charred remains of the onions and grape tomatoes, she felt his gaze shift from the sauce to her. His breath tangled through the loose curls around her face and found her skin. And she realized this was probably the closest she’d been to him for a while. Deftly, Carol picked up an Al Dente noodle and turned off the stove. 

“Pfft. Likes you better than it likes me.”

“Well, can you blame it?” Carol responded, chewing the noodle. Briefly forgetting the tension between them.  

Daryl’s eyes drifted down to her lips, “Nah.”

She noticed the faint redness on his lower lip where he often chewed it, and turned quickly to the sauce, covering the pot. “Drain the spaghetti, let the sauce simmer for a few more minutes, and it should be done."

“Thanks."

Carol managed a quick nod and a half smile as she stepped away from him. Nervously she pushed a ringlet of hair behind her ear. “That recipe looks delicious, by the way. Whose is it? Aaron’s? C0nn^e’s?” 

“Yours.”

Carol blinked at him. “What?”

“You made it for us a once back at Alexandria – before everything. I memorized it, but dunno if I got it right.”

Carol’s eyes burned. “I think you did,” she whispered and turned away quickly before the wayward tear betrayed her and rolled down her cheek. 

“Hey, you wanna stay for dinner?” he asked softly as she gripped her canvas bag tightly, her back turned to him. 

Ask C0nn^e, she wanted to say, take this opportunity to bond with her. Carol had seen them chat when he was patrolling near Union Station. He always looked so happy with her. This would be a great time for him to explore that bond. See where it took him. But the words refused to leave her lips.

“Aunt Carol! You’re staying for dinner?” Judith appeared in the living room. 

Carol’s hand loosened on the rugged canvas of her bag. Her eyes turned to Judith, then landed on Daryl. 

“Please.” His voice was soft yet heavy enough that it dragged her away from the front door. 

“Alright. Let's see what this pasta tastes like.” Carol and Judith beamed at each other. 

As Daryl carefully served them dinner, Judith and RJ showed her their school progress reports. Later tonight, Carol would return to her empty bachelor apartment where the walls would judge her silently in her loneliness. But watching the kids giggle as they told her of their school day, Dog's head resting on her lap, and Daryl’s soft gaze warming her from inside out – Carol let herself feel like she was home. If only for one evening.

Power Rangers Jungle Fury but they're Space Rock People

Because this came to my mind for some reason, have a random PRJF AU wherein the cast is a bunch of Gems, taken from the game Gem Galaxies which is inspired by SU.

Casey Rhodes - Cherry Quartz Cut 1CR. Forming as a Defective Quartz soldier, Casey was assigned to the Pai Zhua Combat and Containment Facility to be taught how to be a better soldier in order to better protect the rest of Gemkind against some of the contained enemies within the Facility. After only a few months, however, catastrophe struck, as one of the largest contained forces of the Facility broke free. 1CR took the place of one of the Facility's best who was to receive the Facility Guardian title, and he along with 2 other Gems were placed into a.. Special, programme, ran by an oddball Gem that provided the trio with powers Gemkind had never seen before, and placed into the position of leader. Though lacking a LOT of self-confidence, 1CR tries to prove he has potential despite being labelled as Defective.. And eventually, Casey gains the courage to go and retrieve the Gem who'd been taken and turned against Pai Zhua, and who he'd replaced.

Theo Martin - Willemite Cut TM02. A Fluorescent technical specialist, though TM09 started out initially as just another Willemite, one day his work skills and intelligence suddenly spiked in improvement, and he joined the Combat and Containment Facility not long after this improvement was noted. Theo became one of the best in the Facility, capable of both technological prowess and also defending himself and others with what he has, and such prowess earnt him the Facility Guardian title. Uptight, a perfectionist, and by-the-law, he butts heads with 1CR a lot as a Defective Gem being in charge, but ultimately comes to respect the Quartz.

Lily Chilman - Sandstone Cabochon 3L. A perky and energetic coloniser, she joined the Combat and Containment Facility seeking to do more with her life beyond terraforming the sands of planets. She earnt the title of Facility Guardian in time as her combat capabilities improved beyond what was expected for a coloniser Gem, and as she incorporated her love of dance and sand-manipulation abilities into her fighting. Unlike her fellow Guardian and close "friend", Theo, Lily was always very friendly to Casey and was happy with him being the leader, though she was also always somewhat concerned he'd been handed too much responsibility so soon after forming and joining the Facility.

Robert James "RJ" - Peridot Cut 04RJ. The oddball and Off-Coloured Peridot of the Combat and Containment Facility, who was given their Promoted Rank and separate branch of the Facility to conduct their work in. Though they come off as initially serious, they're actually a very jovial and friendly Peridot, who doesn't let being different deter him.. Not anymore, at least. When the Combat and Containment Facility is struck, Casey, Theo, and Lily are all sent to him to receive his guidance and technological assistance, and RJ provides the trio with a new experimental programme he's been working on, giving the group their morphers which enhanced them with unique organic-esque abilities, and the strength needed to fight the released enemies and dangers. RJ joins them eventually himself.

Dominic Hargan - Titanium Cut 5DH. A large and intimidating Metal who in actuality, while strong and tanky, is a friendly jokester of a goofball. Initially sent to the Combat and Containment Facility to improve his behaviour and make him less of a jokester, he was assigned to RJ's branch to aid him in his research, and the two became firm friends. After a rebel attack left Dominic severely dented, cracked, and damaged, he was sent away for the sake of his recovery. After fully healing and gaining the support he needed to prevent corrupting due to the severity of the attack, 5DH returned to continue helping his friend, and ultimately joining the Ranger team.

Fran - Orange Spinel Cut 6OF. A Spinel who, while able to cheer up and please the people, suffers from an unnatural amount of anxiety and nerves that Spinels don't tend to have. She encountered RJ one day when he was out of his workplace and the two became friends, RJ supporting the Spinel despite her anxieties and eventually inviting her to be in his branch, where she could feel a bit safer. She initially was kept in the dark on his experimental programme due to the nature of the programme and technology itself, but she eventually finds out, and stays supportive.

Jarrod - Gold Cut J6K. A masc-presenting Gold, and a once great Aristocrat within the Combat and Containment Facility. He was sent to the Facility upon forming in the Kindergarten, and has remained there since. Initially, J6K was a somewhat reserved Gem, much unlike the many other Golds of Gemkind, and having been already different due to how he presented himself, the Gold was teased and tormented. Though he made friends in the Titanium 5DH that was sent to the Facility himself, Jarrod found himself alone when Dominic was damaged in a major attack and sent away for recovery. And something within him snapped. The Gold became haughty and rude, and though that was typical for Golds, Jarrod also proved to be more.. Violent, than others. Though he fought his way to the Facility Guardian title, he never got to keep it due to his behaviour, as it was decided he'd be sent away from the Facility himself to elsewhere.

This was what allowed one of the most dangerous captures of the Containment Facility, a violent and malicious Rebel Platinum, Dai Shi - draconic in appearance and who saught revenge, to lure Jarrod with temptation. The Gold ended up forcibly fused with the Platinum, and though their fusion was immensely unhealthy and harmful, Dai Shi refused to let him go almost like a parasite, dragging him to his old Rebel hideaway by force and surrounding him with old "friends" Dai Shi knew; It took until he was given the strength needed by others, that Jarrod was able to escape the fusion. In the end, the Platinum Dai Shi was shattered after they fully corrupted into a horrific dragon entirely.

Camille - Chameleon Green Pearl Model 9CA. A Pearl, one of thousands among the Gempire, made to serve others. She was plucked out by Dai Shi centuries ago, dragging the Gem into his combat and his schemes which eventually grew rebellious. Camille was enamoured with the Platinum who'd taken her, and though her Pearl coding told her to report the rebellious Gem, she never did; The promises of love he gave, and the overwhelming loyalty and need to serve him that he reinforced, caused her to stay by his side eternally. Upon Dai Shi's capture, she stayed at their old hidden away rebel base, waiting for his return.. Only to fall in love slowly not with Dai Shi, but with the Gold he had forcibly fused with to be able to return and escape containment.

Fires of Heaven: Chapters 2-6

This section covers approx 100 pages! I have barely made a dent! As always, we are spending the first 200ish pages in town, bumping into each other and wondering what to do next. This does help establish everyone’s baseline before we jump off into whatever chaos we’re going to cause this time around. 

We’re with Rand, Egwene, Aviendha, Mat, and Moiraine in Rhuidean. Rand’s trying to get most, if not all, of the Aiel clans to join him so he can take them as muscle for going back into the west and making everyone play along and follow him into Tarmon Gaidon. 

Moiraine thinks this is a bad idea that will just turn all the other countries against him, that he should rely on the White Tower to deliver the loyalties of the countries to him. No one here knows about the Schism! Uh oh! They’re still under the impression that Siuan Sanche is the Amyrlin.

Often I would like to take these characters’ hands and say, “Please simply talk to each other.” RJ likes to do this thing where he shows a character doing something and then another character is like “Ugh, I bet they’d NEVER do that”. Which is a great way of showing how far apart these characters are growing and how much they assume about each other, right or wrong! The specific example is that we are shown Rand sleeping on a pallet on the floor in a simple room and thinking that he should’ve taken time to go to a sweat tent before bed. Then Egwene is in her tent and believes Rand sleeps on an actual mattress and has the Maidens bring him hot water to bathe in whenever he wants. 

Actually, I wish I had been keeping track of this more, because now I’m wondering if it’s mostly Egwene thinking about Rand like that. Anyway

Rand is learning what he can from Asmodean, who is, as you may remember, one of them Forsaken Fellas, and also locked up and Shielded from channeling by Lanfear. He’s already taught Rand more than he had figured out on his own. We’ll just have to wait and see how that goes.

The traders are packing up the angreals to take them to the White Tower. I’m… not sure how that’s going to go, given that most of the traders are Darkfriends and the White Tower and surrounding countries are in big ol’ crisis mode. Hm! 

There’s a Hellhound attack. A Shadowhound attack. Attack of the big scary Darkness Dogs. Rand fends them off/destroys them with Balefire – a thing he knows works but doesn’t know much else about. He saves Mat from the attack and Moiraine stops him after and is like. Please. Dear god. Listen to me. Before you erase all of the Pattern.

I can’t remember if this was covered about balefire before but! It was banned! Because they found out that it erases a person and their actions from the Pattern! Turns out! People affect things around them in a myriad of ways! Let’s maybe be more careful about destroying the literal fabric of reality! 

This puts a slightly different spin on the whole “Moiraine re-discovered and re-invented balefire in her sister’s basement” thing. Girl, that’s an atom bomb!

Notes: 'The Dead' was written after I'd read some folk lore about mandrakes. Firstly, mandrakes were supposed to grow at the foot of a gallows at a crossroads; secondly, it was received wisdom that when a man was hanged, as he died, he involuntarily ejaculated; thirdly, mandrakes grew in the very spot that a hanged man's semen landed as it spurted from the body after the neck had been broken by the hanging; fourthly, mandrakes were alleged to scream like a human if they were pulled out of the ground; finally, mandrakes were supposed to have magical properties and could be used in curses and love potions.

I used that arcane knowledge in 'The Dead', which has always seemed to me to be a poem about life, death and rebirth, and not about mandrakes.

Era sempre dia, e a noite dormia no fundo das águas, estendida como uma larga e escura sombra vigiada pela Cobra-Grande. Houve, então, uma grande festa, que uniu uma bela indígena, filha da Cobra-Grande a um jovem guerreiro. Ela possuía olhos profundos e negros, como as doces jabuticabas, e ele, um largo sorriso de dentes tão brancos como a carne do coco. A moça queria uma coberta de sombra para se deitar. Mas não havia noite, ainda. Ela queria uma sombra maior que a da sumaúma, uma sombra maior do que todas as árvores, do tamanho do céu. Mas a noite dormia no fundo das águas, vigiada pela Cobra-Grande. A entrada é gratuita e dedicada para todos os públicos. Novo Peugeot 2008 será lançado entre o fim de 2023 e começo de 2024 Chamado de P24, projeto da nova geração do SUV chegou a ser cancelado em agosto de 2020 e foi retomado em 2022 A Stellantis tem pressa em dar novidade para a Peugeot e programa para lançar entre o fim de 2023 e começo de 2024 a nova geração do 2008 que será fabricada na Argentina. O SUV já chegará reestilizado. O projeto é chamado de P24 e matará a atual geração produzida no Brasil. Aliás, com o fim do 2008 nacional, a fábrica de Porto Real (RJ) ficará num primeiro momento dedicada a produzir somente modelos Citroën como o C4 Cactus, C3 e os inéditos SUV (Projeto CC24) O Projeto P24 chegou a ser cancelado em agosto de 2020, mas renasceu em 2022 como apontaram fontes da Quatro Rodas. O acabamento interno segue o padrão dos irmãos 3008 e 5008. O quadro de instrumentos é digital e o volante conta com novo desenho, mas, mantendo a base achatada. O desenho do painel é bem parecido com os irmãos, a central multimídia fica destacada e abaixo ficam posicionadas as saídas de ar centrais. Os comandos do ar-condicionado remetem as usados por aviões. O novo 2008 será o segundo modelo da Peugeot a ganhar o motor 1.0 Turbo Flex T200 que estreara na linha 2024 do 208 a ser apresentada em meados deste ano.
