Still thinking about how V8 had an entire scene for Penny to explain the details of Ruby’s semblance to her
The fact that Penny knew the details of Ruby’s semblance better than Ruby herself did (and they had Blake specifically point out how strange that is)
The fact that Penny knew all the details of Ruby’s semblance before she even figured out her own
The fact that semblance discoveries/evolutions/etc are always given big, dramatic scenes, and for Ruby, that came from Penny
Semblances are such an important part of this show and its symbolism, and it really makes that scene seem like kind of a big deal

no i will bring this up again for the N&D brainrot, but honestly Ruby could have just went "coooool" like when Penny revealed her hands' other functions but no she just had to stare at Penny like this so proudly.

Tbh I sometimes feel RWBY would definitely benefit more from... explaining its power system, and have characters explain what they're doing. The only one we've gotten in eight seasons was Penny about Ruby's semblance in V8C3. Closest past that was the training montage in V7, which basically amounted to "I dunno, works for me".
Also on the topic of semblance evolution; what do you think about the idea of Yang's hair and eyes glowing blue as an evolution? It seems to be a popular idea.
Oh, hard agree. I know it's a common complaint leveled at critics nowadays, this idea that the show needn't hold your hand, but there's a rather significant difference between treating the audience as incapable of critical thought and/or bogging the story down with an unnecessary amount of exposition... and simply refusing to clarify crucial world building points. RWBY is well into the latter. There's a reason why schools are such a popular setting for magic/sci-fi stories — it allows the author to impart knowledge to the audience under the guise of the characters receiving the same information via education. There's a reason why so many magic/sci-fi stories feature a prominent, ignorant character — it allows the author to impart that knowledge with the implication that of course everyone in-world knows this already... just not this one person for specific, established reasons. Isn't it convenient that by explaining things to them we, the audience, learn them too? And there's a reason why RWBY features both these tools: Beacon and Jaune. So it's not that our authors don't understand how to have characters explain what's happening in a believable way — Oobleck gives a lecture on Faunus history, Pyrrha info dumps about aura, etc. — but that they themselves are now unclear about how their world functions. How exactly do semblances and aura work? I don't think RT knows anymore, which is why aspects keep changing, are couched in rumor, additions are accepted without question, or questions are ignored entirely. How does the Staff work? I don't think they knew until this volume, which is why we ended up with an explanation minutes before the characters used it — and why the explanation of how Ambrosius functions vs. what Ambrosius actually does on screen is so out of synch. Yeah, the characters should absolutely explain what is going on, like they used to in the early volumes, but that first requires that the writers make those decisions and stick to them.
And I hadn't heard that idea about Yang before! I'm... on the fence? On the one hand, I like the idea of her literally getting hotter like the blue in a flame, as well as the fact that it would visually connect her with Tai. I mean yeah, they already look similar given their hair color and outfits, but it would be cool for a powered-up Yang to have eyes the color of her mom's and hair the color of her dad's eyes. On the other hand, still thinking aesthetically, that would really mess with her already dwindling color scheme. Not that anyone but Ruby is really adhering to their primary color anymore, but blue is still pretty out there for Yang (it would thrill the freezerburn fans though lol). It would also be a pretty out there semblance change for an already strange semblance. Yeah, yeah, Ruby literally turns into rose petals, but at least they're still red. Blue hair on Yang would be kinda jarring imo and, ngl, but my immediate thought was, "Oh, so she's really just a Super Saiyan then. Lighten the blue enough and it'll look like Ultra Instinct..." I know there's been talk recently about when RT's interest in anime homages turns into outright copying, so I guess it would just depend on whether it feels like RWBY has made the idea their own and, frankly, whether it looked good. Blue hair could look awesome. It could also look incredibly stupid. Get a decent design going and that's something that can easily fall under our Rule of Cool. Ren sees pretty colors in a B&W landscape in Volume 8 and Yang's hair goes blue in Volume 9. Sure, why not lol

Yes! Good! You're caught up on Chapter 3!! Cuz my next question, so you know how Nora used her semblance to her limit to overcharge that electrified door? And did you know according the the V7 DVD commentaries, Roman's semblance was supposed to be Fiona's semblance (the infinite pockets)? Since Roman is in Nora's place in Reverse RWBY, do you think the equivalent of what Nora did in V8C3 would be Roman awakening his semblance (infinite pockets) so hard it knocks him out? :3c
I’m still not sure if Roman ever discovers his semblance in the story. While in the actual story discovering your semblance and your identity is an important theme, I’ve found in this AU there’s more focus on not needing extra/flashy powers to make an impact.

Rating rwby characters on the chance they each have of having a full-on mental breakdown on screen this volume (after v8c3)
Yang (9/10): we’ve already seen a lot of tumultuous behavior from yang, but there is definitely more yangst to come, as she has a lot to break down about. There are so many possible reasons why yang could lose it on screen, including raven being mentioned or reappearing. I could also see yang collapse under feelings of guilt that Oscar got kidnapped under her leadership since she has always defined herself as being able to care for/protect others. And also everything going on with her and ruby. but I could see this being pushed to next volume as well so it’s not certain
Weiss (3/10): Weiss has been pretty mellow so far, and there hasn’t been much buildup for her. The only thing she could really snap over is her family, but at this point I really don’t see it going past a “what’s that supposed to mean?”
Blake (1/10): despite the impending doom, Blake’s doing pretty well. I don’t think we’ve ever seen her happier. The only chance of her breaking down at all is if everyone also breaks down and even then it won’t be as big as other people’s breakdowns
Jayne (3.5/10): not much is happening with Jaune rn. I could see him reacting very strongly to Nora being as injured as she is and having that trigger stuff about pyrrha, but unless something completely out of the blue happens I think his chances are pretty low
Ren (7/10): seven is a very high number given that this is Ren we’re talking about. I honestly see his emotional development approaching more of a downward spiral than an outright meltdown, but I could also see both happening.
Nora (it depends on a few things/10): we’ve seen Nora break a bit already this volume, and this identity crisis she’s having is far from over, but we have no idea how long Nora is going to be out. If she wakes up soon (which I hope she does) I could see crwby doing a full arc on her and if that happens I’d give her an 8. If she’s knocked out for 3 or more episodes, I’ll give her a 6
Oscar (5/10): I truly think he could go either way. He’s definitely gonna snap at ozpin at some point this volume, but idk if that’s gonna lead to a full-on breakdown
Penny (10/10): I am certain she will break down in some way or another. There is absolutely no way that she won’t.
Ruby (12/10): this is more of a head cannon than the rest of these, but I have felt this coming from volumes away. I never made a volume 8 prediction bingo, but if I did “ruby finally SNAPS” would’ve been the center square. I think a lot of what yang said in episode one got to her, even if she doesn’t admit it. And the notion that penny will turn against her, no matter the reason, will push her over the edge, and when she finally breaks it’s gonna be big

Reaction to RWBY v8c3, “Strings”
Okay. Our heroes are variously in prison, in pneumatic tubes,  in peril, and in pursuit.  This'll be pleasant.
Opening: I no longer think that Qrow-and-Harriet grouping means they're going to interact positively.  They're  both devastated by Clover's death but will deal with it in completely opposite, violent ways.
I don't know if Penny is going to get hacked but that mirror imagery signals something bad. Don't die on us again please...
Weiss' hmm of agreement with Blake was very muted, and she was completely silent in chiding Nora.  Not exhaustion, I don't think; it's more that she's being reserved and withdrawn.  Something's going on there.
You go, Penny.  (But the enhanced through-all-walls vision would be creepy and dangerous in anyone less wholesome.)
And we get a tiny bit of perspective from the ordinary Atlas soldier, completely in the dark and waiting to be sent out to fight and  die.   ouch.
Hah!  Maybe Penny just hacked it, but I like the idea that the security checkpoint uses Aura, the natural go-to for uniquely identifying people in this world.  And of  course she has her father's Aura.
We keep seeing that short ponytailed officer!  I will be very amused if one of these times it turns out to be Neo again.
Ruby's Semblance works like a Star Trek teleporter?  Cool.  As long as it  never goes wrong.   What's that Hitchhiker's Guide song?  I teleported home one night with Ron and Sid and Meg. Ron stole Maggie's heart away and I got Sidney's leg...
Ironwood you MORON.  I should have known there was no stupidity the writers wouldn't make you stoop to.   Watts really IS going to hack Penny, and the Amity broadcast too.  Ugh. Ugh!
Nora's true power is to weaponize slapstick. I see it all now.  (And I'm mostly not joking. It lets her think outside the box nicely.)
That POSTER.  Poor Bill, though, I can absolutely relate as an oblivious person.
Ruby struggled to carry Penny in v2, she was up to smoothly carrying Weiss in v6, and now suddenly she can carry 5 people.  The power of plot...and all that training in v7, I suppose.
4 people.  Where is May? Probably heading to the hangar to get their escape ready.
Pietro is remoting in.  I guess Penny is just PuTTy in his hands. (computer nerd joke)
Some very open self-insight! She's struggling, but she's handling this so much better than Ren because Nora doesn't do denial.   I'm confident she will find her balance this volume. Him, maybe not.
Yes, thank you! They're finally considering the importance of getting Penny the fuck away from Salem!  Although...um, what are Pietro and Maria going to do stuck up in orbit?   If something's high enough to be a satellite, doesn't that mean it's above the oxygen layer?  And even if they handwave air, food and water, won't they need to get down somehow eventually?  ...Is this going to be a suicide mission for the oldsters?  Now I have even more fears. And for Penny, too.  She could be left on Amity indefinitely as a sentinel,  with only these few brief memories of having friends.
Yeep!
Wow, Harriet said Penny's name with real contempt.
And Ruby has realized that opening the vault themselves makes the staff infinitely more vulnerable.  I really wish these basic tactical facts had been acknowledged last volume, but it's still good to have  them said now.
oooh, you done fucked up,  Harriet.  She picked a needless fight with a Maiden and she has no idea what that means.
Holy crap, they won? It's true Penny has no Maiden training, and her combat training has mostly been aimed towards Grimm. Whereas the Ace Ops have years of group-maneuver training specifically against other people.  Forrest was right, they're Ironwood's attack dogs - not Hunters, licenses or no.
When you put an electric door over the mantlepiece in act one, you've got to have Thor go through it by act three.  It's a rule of drama.
We're...never going to get Penny back after this, are we.   She's going to get hacked and then she's going to die for real, or best case be stuck  on Amity.  Or even be absorbed into it as an AI, abandoning her hacked body.   And the Maiden  power will go to...Nora?
This is so depressing.

V8C3 thought: Watts, Ironwood, the Vault, Penny, and the Relic are Ansem, Maleficent, the Door to Darkness, Riku, and Kingdom Hearts itself from KH1. So... Penny will WILLINGLY go back to Ironwood, Watts will take over her body and dispose of Ironwood now that he's outlived his usefulness, and then they'll head down to the vault. Except Watts won't be able to control Penny's soul, which is, in turn, what commands the Maiden Powers. Which could lead to a VERY interesting final battle.
bro i am LOVING these hot takes 👀 kingdom hearts x rwby parallels are amazing

RWBY V8C3
SPOILERS
Nora starts talking to Blake and Weiss abt Ren
PENNY VS THE ACE OPS OMG
NORA HAS A SCAR NOW ALL OVER HER BODY SO OH NO
I love you May
Also, Marrow looks so sad when he leaves with the Ace-ops, I mean he looks back at Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Penny and Nora but I think he was looking at Blake or Weiss. ( since Blake is a Faunus and Miles said we would get Marrow and Blake bonding over being a Faunus, or he looks at Weiss cuz she beat the crap outta him)
