Councilman AU: since Jaune is currently with Summer and Tai dealing with the situation in Mistral along with Raven, i was thinking we could see them finally facing Raven and the Branwen Tribe, with the former team members having an intense and dramatic standoff while Councilman Arc...is currently dealing with a flirty Vernal who is excited to have cross paths again.

The air was heavy with a confrontation long in the making. Clouds hung above, thick with impending lightning as a storm was brewing on the ground as well.

"Summer..." Raven gaped. She could not pretend to not care, not when the leader she thought dead was still alive and staring daggers at her.

"Hey, Raven. Guess you never changed, did you?"

Taiyang stayed silent. Part of him was too angry to say anything, part of him knew that Summer had just about as much to say to Raven as he did.

She, Raven, bristled. "You knew of my circumstances and you knew damn well that-"

Taiyang had enough. "Circumstances?" His voice was cold enough to make both women flinch. Neither of them had ever heard this tone out of his mouth. "Like having a child and husband? A baby at home, waiting for her mother to come back to her? Summer had a reason: she actively couldn't. So, what's yours?" He stepped forward, clenching his fists.

"I'm all ears."

RWBY Vernal’s Allusion

Our catfish queen. The introduction of Vernal has certainly caught us off guard, and her whole Spring Maiden twist at the end of Volume 5 was definitely one of the best in any show ever. Today we’ll dive into her possible character inspiration and how she fits into the general story of RWBY (this might slowly turn into a Weiss analysis down the line)

Vernal is based on the Little Robber Girl (or the Little Robber Maiden) from the Snow Queen story

Let’s look into the story of the Snow Queen, more specifically, the chapter of the Little Robber Maiden. Gerda, the main character, is on a quest to find the Snow Queen. On the way, she is captured by robbers, let by the Old Robber Woman. Her pure golden heart makes her valueable, so she is taken to their base and meets the Little Robber Maiden, the daughter of the Robber Woman. She thinks that Gerda is a new playmate and pursues to hang out with her. I could go on (this story is really long), but from this we have enough to look into.

Winter, Weiss’s sister, is based off the Snow Queen. The reason that Weiss and Winter are sisters is because the story of Snow White is based off of the story the Snow Queen. Since Weiss is looking for Winter (the Snow Queen) in Volume 5, she takes the place of Gerda in this version of the story. She gets picked up by robbers (the Branwen Tribe) led by the Old Robber Woman (Raven Branwen), and meets the Little Robber Maiden (Vernal), who steals her weapon.

Gerda was captured because she was in possession of gold, which could translate to Weiss being taken because of her net worth, and being threatened to be taken back to Atlas for ransom, thus “sending her to the Snow Queen”. Coincidentally, Yang’s appearance is what allowed Weiss to get away from the bandits. The golden heart (Yang) is what helped Gerda (Weiss).

Vernal fights Weiss during the Battle of Haven. This could be a reference to The Robber Maiden wanting to “play” with Gerda, in this instance they’re fighting. We know Weiss loses and that happens, but after being healed by Jaune, summons the Queen Lancer she fought earlier in the volume, representing how the true Snow Queen was inside of her all along.

Vernal’s Weapon: In the story of the Little Robber Maiden, she owns a pet reindeer, who aids Gerda in her quest for the Snow Queen. Vernal’s weapons appear to be deer horn knives, named after their curved shape similar to a deer’s horn. Her weapon may have been inspired by the reindeer from the story.

Hear me out: AU where Vernal actually was the spring maiden, and she and Wiess actually became friends during Weiss' stay with the Branwen Tribe. The first person she thinks of before dying is her mother, but the last person that Vernal thinks of is Weiss. Since the maiden powers go to the person the dying maiden thinks of last, Weiss becomes the spring maiden.

Raven slowly moved through the bushes, her skin rapidly changing to match the color of her surroundings as she watched a few bandits harass a small family traveling by cart. Her hand went to the hilt of her blade as she watched, eyes narrowed as she waited for an opening. She spoke in a hushed whisper to her daughter. “Stay put and let me handle this.” 

Yang gave a small nod, keeping still as she watched the bandits. “What are you going to do?” 

“I’m going to do what huntresses are supposed to do.” Raven started to disappear into the shadows and she pulled down the grimm mask she wore, eyes starting to burn with fire as a faint glow came through the mask. The wind around her started to pick up as the sky darkened with thick clouds covering the sun. a smirk crossed her lips as she moved from the bushes and into the trees, keeping to the shadows. 

“We better hurry,” one of the bandits said as he pulled his blade out of its sheath. “We dont want to get caught between a storm and grimm.” 

“You’ll hurry when I tell you to!” The second bandit sliced her dagger across the cheek of the father her crew was harassing, a wicked smile crossed her lips. “I’m going to have fun making them scream.” 

Raven took a breath and dropped from the branch she was on, her skin turning black as the void as her clothing changed to match, her eyes giving a haunting glow as she moved forward towards the bandits. Her movements matched the way a beowolf would move: quick and precise slicing as she rushed around the bandits. She froze once one of the bandits spoke, weapon pointed at Yang. 

“Its been a long time, Raven.” 

Raven slowly turned to face the bandit, eyes on the blade and Yang. “Vernal. What are you doing here?” 

“Holding your brat from the looks of it.” Vernal smirked as she pressed the crescent blade closer to Yang’s neck. “Never thought you’d be one to settle down.” 

“I found someone I care about.” Raven slowly took her mask off and let her camouflage go as her eyes trained onto Vernal. “Now, put her down or I’ll-” 

Vernal pressed the tip of her blades to Yang’s neck, drawing a little blood. “Or you’ll what? Try to come after me? Your father wants you back home, which means you can either come back willingly, or I can drag your daughter back with me. Your choice.” 

Raven’s eyes shifted between Vernal and Yang until she finally dropped her weapon and sighed. “Yang, remember what I told you about being a huntress? That sometimes we have to make tough choices?” 

Yang slowly nodded, making sure she didnt get cut. “Yes mom.”

Raven closed her eyes and swiped her hand in the air, a portal opening under Yang. “Tell your dad and uncle I’ll be home late.” 

“Mom!” 

Vernal took a shot with her weapon as Yang fell through the portal, glaring at Raven when she missed. “You really want to make me work hard for this, dont you?” 

“I wont let you mess with my family.” Ravens eyes started to blaze with fire as ice and electricity started to form around her hands, giving her reptilian-like claws. She rushed towards Vernal and slammed her claws against the blades, sparks and ice flying off with each strike. 

Vernal pulled back and panted as she watched Raven’s movements. “I will bring you back to the tribe-” Her words were cut short as a sword pierced through her back and into her heart. 

The fire in Raven’s eyes started to die down as she took a step back, watching as a familiar face pulled a sword out from Vernal. “Summer?” 

Summer smiled as she looked at Raven, silver eyes empty of emotion as she spoke. “So that’s where Spring’s been hiding. Salem will be glad to know.” 

“You’re… helping Salem?” Raven took another look at Summer and finally noticed a grimm arm on her right side. “What happened to you?” 

“I was shown the truth of what this war really is.” Summer let Vernal’s body hit the ground and slowly started to walk off. “Ozma lied to us. So now you have a choice: come with me to Salem, or I will be forced to hunt you down.” 

“Or… you can come home to us.” Raven took a step forward, watching Summer. “You have a home and family waiting for you.” 

“I dont have a family anymore. Are you coming with me?”

“No.” 

“Pity.” 

Raven watched as Summer started to dissipate into a flurry of rose petals, scattering into the wind. She shook as she leaned against a tree, terrified of what her friend had become. After picking up her blade, she quickly swiped it through the air and walked through the portal to make her way home.
