The thing that really kills me about that fight against the walkers is the Bees get this incredible fight sequence of being perfectly in sync partners and easily covering each other’s bases but then it suddenly cuts to Weiss stumbling during her fight because Ruby, her partner, isn’t there. Jaune was good at helping her recover, sure, but nevertheless the parallels between functional partners and partners that are split apart were very, very prevalent.
During the Ace Ops fight Weiss was holding her own well against Marrow, yet Ruby still rushed to deflect his weapon when it was coming towards Weiss. Harriet had thrown her into the room, Ruby- still dazed on the floor- looked up, saw a weapon coming towards Weiss (who was poised with her rapier ready, mind you), and didn’t hesitate to come in and smack it back with Crescent Rose. The parallels between Marrow and Harriet arguing vs Whiterose silently nodding at each other making sure the other was alright, like! Ruby didn’t have to check up on Weiss but she did so anyways because they’re partners, because they’re there fer each other rather than individual units strung together on the same team.
After making sure Weiss was alright, Ruby continues to draw Harriet away from the rest of the fray. Then when Ruby is fighting Harriet, Weiss comes back to check up on her and summon an ice wall to defend her partner from Harriet charging at her. There’s something to be said about how Marrow and Harriet were so disjointed in comparison to Whiterose being there fer each other. Love versus a lack thereof, so to speak (and yes, I may be a Whiterose shipper, but this love I’m referring to is that deeper special platonic bond between people who fight fer their lives and trust and care fer each other wholeheartedly).
So now parallel that fight with the one against the walkers, where Weiss is stumbling in a 1v1 and Ruby gets overpowered by a walker because she’s having an extremely justified panic attack. They’re apart, and now both are struggling because neither has their partner there to support em. The Bees are doing all of these sickass combo moves and combining their different fighting styles perfectly while Whiterose is just having a plain ol Bad Time™️ right now. Love versus a lack thereof, so speak. That being said I do wanna point out that when Ruby was down on the ground, it was Weiss who called out to her and made the first blow against the walker who had her pinned. Shit man even when they’re falling apart Weiss is still the first one to reach fer her partner. The love isn’t fully gone, it’s hurting yes, but o h how the love is still there through it all. There is something to be said on love and the lack thereof and love that’s struggling to breathe but still persists.
What I’m saying is, there’s shit to be said about partners, about people tied together in trust and loyalty, about people who know the other so well they can almost effortlessly cover each other bases. There’s shit to be said about found family, about choosing people, about doing the very brave thing that is loving them. In V8, Yang talked to Ruby about risks and sacrifices and heroes. Later on, Blake had her gentle heart to heart about admiring Ruby as a leader, but what Ruby really needs right now? She doesn’t need a pep talk revolving around duties and respect, what she needs right now is someone to speak to her as an equal. As a best friend. As a partner.
Weiss, please fer the love of god, talk to your partner. She needs someone to lean on right now, and my clown makeup fer Bees Kiss is OFF but goddamnit am I polishing my shoes as I hope fer a Weiss and Ruby heart to heart.

All the "I am a huntress" bits from WBY were so good but something about Weiss's "I am the granddaughter of a hero and the child of a villain. I am a citizen of a fallen kingdom and an heir to nothing. I will not be defined by my name because I will be the one to define it." has just imprinted it in my brain now, thanks crwby

You know, I think it was the confrontation with Cinder that tipped Raven *back* to Ozpin's side, more than anything else. The conversations with Yang would have definitely contributed, being held accountable for her actions for the first time in nearly twenty years.
But big decisions in life - the ones that matter - you don't make them on a whim. You need time to process, for your mind to actually adjust to the new reality you're creating. Raven runs away a lot, but if the situation had been different, I bet she would have come back to Yang in time. She just needed some time to process what had happened.
"You turned yourself into a monster just for power." "Look who's talking."
Raven got to, for the first time, stare directly at a mirror of herself - Cinder isn't some lost soul or some evil mastermind, she's just the natural consequence of what would happen to Raven if she carried down the path she had carved for herself. Slowly losing more of her humanity in a desperate attempt to protect herself from imagined harm, when the real harm was the one she was doing to herself and those she loved.
Fear of Salem, fear of death, fear of the Grimm - these have driven Raven, but all along she's been able to claim that this was her choice, it was what she wanted.
Raven got to look at Cinder during their fight and think "Actually, this isn't me. I don't want this." It's unfortunate that these kind of thoughts aren't acted on straight away, because Raven in her next conversation with Yang had to fall back again on that shell of who she'd been to protect herself from harm - despite having just proven through her own victory how hollow it all ends up being.
But there's plenty of time. After all, who's going to be the first person Yang sees in Vacuo?

RWBY Parallels V5, V8, and V9
Ruby’s hand-to-hand combat.
V5E3: Ozpin, “Getting you four in fighting shape… (points to Ruby) You can only fight so long as you have Crescent Rose, but you’re still lacking in hand-to-hand combat.”
V8E14: Ruby loses Crescent Rose. While she had some coaching from Ozpin in volume 5 and tries to engage in hand-to-hand combat against Neo in volume 8, it’s clear she heavily relied upon her weapon. I expect in volume 9, we will start to see her branch out of her comfort zone to other styles of combat. I hope Yang is going to coach her a bit more in the art of hand-to-hand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby is purity.
V5E5: Blake, “Have you ever met someone and thought to yourself, ‘They are the personification of this word’? …I remember getting to know Ruby and thinking, ‘This girl is the embodiment of purity.’ After a while, I saw Weiss was defiance. And Yang was strength.”
V9: The quote from season 5 about Ruby being purity reminded me of the poem Child of the pure unclouded brow from Alice in Wonderland that speaks of losing one’s sunny face and silver laughter. Ruby's purity and silver eyes may be why she is tied to the weather in this version of Wonderland. The last stanza of the poem especially stood out to me.
And though the shadow of a sigh May tremble through the story, For ‘happy summer days’ gone by, And vanish’d summer glory – It shall not touch with breath of bale The pleasance of our fairy-tale.
How do you handle all of this?
V5E5:
Oscar to Ruby, “How do you handle all of this? …How can you be so confident? People have tried to kill you. The world’s about to go to war all over again. How are you okay with any of this?”
Ruby to Oscar, “When Beacon fell, I lost two of my friends: Penny Pollendina and Pyrrha Nickos. I didn’t know them for very long but that doesn’t change the fact they were two of the most kind-hearted people I’d ever met. But that didn’t save them. Pyrrha thought if there was even the smallest chance of helping someone that it was a chance worth taking, and because of that, she died fighting a battle she knew she couldn’t win. And Penny was killed just to make a statement… I am scared but not just for me. What happened at Beacon shows Salem doesn’t care if you’re standing against her or not. She’ll kill anybody, and that scares me most of all. Pyrrha, Penny, I’d be lying if I said that it didn’t hurt, that I didn’t think about them every day since I lost them, that I didn’t wish I had spent more time with them. If it had been me instead, I know they would have kept fighting too, no matter how dangerous it was. So that’s what I choose to do: to keep moving forward."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
V8E14: Penny is still fighting even after Ruby and Blake fell.
V9 Intro: While Ruby could still keep a positive outlook in Volume 5 after the initial loss of Penny, I can't imagine Ruby keeping the same outlook in Volume 9 after round 2 of losing Penny.
Tumblr media
Think back to Beacon
V5E7: Ren, “That desire to go back and tell yourself not to be so stupid. That just proves you’re not the person you used to be. You’re smarter or kinder or stronger, and you’re not done growing yet.”
V9 Trailer: “What are you going to be?”
In Alice in Wonderland, Alice says, "Mabel, I’ll stay down here! It’ll be no use they're putting their heads down and saying ‘Come up again, dear!’ I shall only look up and say ‘Who am I then? Tell me that first, and then, if I like being that person, I’ll come up: if not, I’ll stay down here till I’m somebody else’—but, oh dear!” cried Alice, with a sudden burst of tears, “I do wish they would put their heads down! I am so very tired of being all alone here!”
I think Ruby's younger self speaking to her older self is meant to mirror the conversations Alice has about who she is and who she will become.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Ruby sticks around…
V5E7: Yang, “If Ruby sticks around, then I will too. If there’s one thing I know about her, it’s that she somehow always knows the right thing to do.”
V9 Trailer: Unknown voice (though it sounded similar to Salem to me), “You never were the hero... You seem to be carrying a rather large burden with you. What if you could leave Ruby Rose behind, shed like an old coat? What might happen if you don’t?"
Will the team have to face this question? What growth will Ruby have to go through to keep fighting and to continue being a leader?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still rewatching the other seasons, but I found some of these moments interesting to compare, and I am excited to see Ruby's growth especially!

whats up with rubes in this new season? I kinda fell off rwby a while ago and now I gather theres a new season but in every shot of ruby people are sharing she just looks like shes contemplating death. Is she good?
well that's the thing: ruby isn't well! she hasn't been well in a while and contrary to the other three, she did NOT go through a healing journey in v4-5. ruby's response to trauma has always been to try and outrun it: get to the next step, the next fight the next relic. and this coping mechanism is not one you can sustain especially with the severe consecutive hits she takes in v8, which, might I add, lasted all of 48 hrs in-world. so no ruby isn't good she has NOT been good since the fall of beacon and this volume is the one she will finally actually face it.

"Yang's "you never gave up on people, even when they hurt you" sounding like something that would be said about Sun vs. Blake getting hurt by Adam and, in fact, giving up on him." anon..
I literally thought about this the entire time... unfortunately... like. Blake wincing at a comment Weiss made. that line just now in todays episode..
THERES SO MANY MOMENTS WHERE I THOUGHT ABOUT ADAM THIS VOLUME SO FAR... I was live blogging the last episode and I posted this few aka Weiss comment I was talking about:
" “things have to die someday, right?” Weiss says. WHY DID BLAKE WINCE AT THAT. is there something you want to share with the class "
like... girl you are thinking about something. you have to be. like clearly obviously the event in v6 is still bothering her and still hasn't left her mind.
that's clear because they've only talked about him like. once. not even directly. they don't talk about him directly ever. in the scene where they were talking about him in v7...
whole conversation:
Yang: He didn't have a lot of good options. (abt ironwood ig?) Blake: I'm not sure there are many good options left for any of us, anymore. Keeping secrets, *taking lives? It makes you wonder how far we're going to have to go to keep doing.. the right thing.. ... Yang: Blake. *We did.. what we had to do. ... Blake: *I know.. But next time, I want to make sure.. we don't have to. And I can tell you, ambushing a huntress who's just trying to help isn't an option I'm thrilled about choosing. Yang: Then maybe we shouldn't.
*highlighted parts are about Adam (NOT DIRECTLY, but they ARE talking about him) proof:
Tumblr media
from the writers documentary. (it's an image.. should show)
Are they still hinting at how this still bothers Blake in this volume?? Since they've done it in v7 or is that out the window? Things still haven't gotten better in regards to what Blake was worried about in this original scene. in fact they've gotten worse (we know).. but she isn't talking about it. NONE of them are even talking about it..
So many people have died!! yet the last few episodes all of the characters are like "oh, another time." and "i don't wanna talk about this right now." GIRL YOU HAVE EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF THE MINUTE OF THE DAY TO TALK ABOUT THIS.
All of them are worried about the same shit.. and don't want to do their worst but ohhh that cannot be avoided because they're not even speaking about it at all.
they're all insane /lh
Tbh I haven't really gotten Adam vibes from anything this season other than the hilarious hypocrisy of Yang's line, but I also haven't been looking for them. Didn't notice Blake's wince at that line either. Maybe it's about Adam? But with how he is apparently The Character Who Shall Not Be Named now, I don't see them doing much with him and particular his relationship with Blake, so who even knows what Blake was thinking about in that moment.
Unless you count Blake's uncharacteristic shyness, meekness, and fear of everything around her as Trauma about Adam that's only resurfaced after *checks notes* an indeterminate amount of time after killing him with her own hands.

OK so I realised something,
After rewatching the scene between Yang and Raven at the end of V5 and connecting it to the Summer got turned into à Hound by Salem and the flashback at the beggining of the finale of Volume 9 i have a theory, Summer was the Spring Maiden.
Now there is one element that destroy the whole theory but im gonna get into it in a bit.
So when Summer and Raven went to the super secret mission to probably take down Salem, it went wrong which resulted in Summer being turned into a Hound BUT at the time I dont think Salem had a good grasp ober the experiment (if we assume that the Hound in V8 was recently made and was the first succesful one) and Summer didn't totally turn into one but was really fucked up physicaly and mentaly and was suffering a lot. So Raven killed her by mercy and Summer who still had a bit of Sanity gave the power to her.
The only element (correct me if im wrong) that could contradict the theory is the girl that Raven found who had the Spring Maiden powers and couldn't Qrow and Ozpin knew about it. However the fact that Raven got the powers despite the fact that all she put the girl throught mighy not have made her liking Raven at all is very suspicious.

⚠️Warning, Major RWBY Volume 9 Spoilers⚠️
WhiteKnight - A ship I did not appreciate fully until the past few volumes
As I have probably proven with my posts in the past, My ideals on Weiss and Jaune ships are a bit odd. I’ve shown expressions of support for Arkos, Iceberg, and White Knight. And these are all ships that I love and always will love. But I wanted to make a post talking about how I feel about White Knight. Because really the more time and volumes have gone on, the more and more I really really love this ship and hope it becomes canon. As I have seen a lot of evidence for it someday being a canon ship, not quite as much as RG, but still a very substantial amount.
To start things off- I want to talk about Jaune’s relationship with Weiss, cause this is overall a far less complex part but still very worth talking about. As we all know, Jaune started off with a crush on Weiss. But then that slowly faded with time, instead his crush being on Pyrrha, especially in Volume 3. But ever since then, Jaune has shown signs of truly appreciating and liking Weiss’ friendship. And for most of the recent volumes, he has at first seemed to keep things mostly on a platonic level from my point of view. But, the more I look into it, there is legit evidence he could still have some serious feelings for her. Especially in Volume 8, he was devastated whenever Weiss didn’t come back with Winter. And it could be argued that he even felt this way in V5, with his devastated reaction to her being impaled by Cinder.
Next thing- Weiss’ feelings towards Jaune. This is a bit more of a complex and fun part. Weiss of course started off thinking Jaune was unqualified and not worth her time, even finding him annoying. Although, she did start to feel differently about him towards Volume 3, seeming to overall appear more friendly towards Jaune in the few interactions they had. Then, there was Volume 5, where it was shown it seemed she did truly miss Jaune and his antics, and she was grateful for his help at Haven. Clearly she was happy to see Jaune again and to be reunited with all of her former classmates. Then in Volume 6, She was even quick to try and defuse Jaune’s anger towards Oscar. Whereas around the time of Volume 1, she likely would have just made fun of him or done something else to make him even more mad. Then there was Volume 7, where she was quick to actually want to go see a movie with him and Oscar, a parallel to her rejecting his offer to see a movie together in the earlier volumes. Showing that she had grown more comfortable around Jaune in all this time. Then it became even more complex in Volume 8- to start things off- all of the characters seemed to be divided via people they were closest with/in a relationship with. Ruby/Oscar, Blake/Yang, and Nora/Ren. This would leave Weiss and Jaune as the last pair. That may not be actually concrete evidence but I do find it kind of fun and think that there was a choice there for symbolism, CRWBY loves the smaller details. Then we have the ending episodes of RWBY Volume 8, and in those Weiss showed more worry for Jaune it would seem. Even looking worried as he stopped boosting her aura and ran towards Penny. Then ofc, they sat together and she seemed to wanna keep her eyes on Jaune. Then finally, in the finale of that Volume, Jaune and Weiss were there for each other the whole fight. Weiss showing remorse for Jaune due to him having to kill Penny and actively wanted to help him out, physically helping him stand again after he fell to his knees. Finally- Volume 9. Of course we had Weiss saying Jaune was more “Mature~” and blushing profusely afterwards. But more than that, Weiss also showed genuine concern for Jaune’s mental state and also was the first one to try and ease Jaune’s mind over him feeling like a failure, like he wasn’t a good enough hero, and subsequently being the first one to hug him. She then also showed the most expressive response to Jaune being his old self again, giggling at his reaction to being back to his old self. It may not be the most concrete evidence to say she has feelings for him, but there seems to be a lot of stuff pointing to there being something there that wasn’t there before.
So while there may be less solid evidence for it than with RoseGarden, I really really like this ship and would not be mad if it became canon. It would make me happy to see these two get a happy ending together, they both deserve a happy ending after all.

I agree team RWBY haven’t made remnant worse but I question what they’ve done to make it better? There is ruby’s message which does “unite” them in a vague sense. But as far as actual institutional change they haven’t done much, the white fang has ghira in charge again so they’re more or less the same as before sienna, stopping Adam was the right thing to do but it doesn’t make life better for the Faunus, it just stops it from getting worse.
The status quo hasn’t really been changed except as a result of Salem’s actions.
This isn’t to say team RWBY aren’t still hero’s and deserve praise for what they’ve accomplished tho. They’re doing their absolute best to keep the world from burning lol.
First of all, I should note that our heroes had barely been given their licenses during the Atlas arc. This grants them at least some measure of legit authority to actually do anything about the status quo from a grander perspective. They are not politicians, they are not leaders, they are barely children as far as the rest of the world is concerned. The idea that it's all on them is a little ridiculous to me.
Secondly, I'd say the "status quo" has been shifting constantly since the days of Oz and Salem. Humanity 1.0 had magic, a full moon, and gods to hear their prayers. The gods then killed humanity, left the moon shattered, and a bitter and broken Salem behind.
Humanity 2.0 had aura, dust, semblances, Grimm everywhere until Oz and Salem came along as the "New Gods" as it were. Unfortunately, their period didn't last thanks to Oz and Salem's...disputes on what they wanted to do with the world.
So, you have a long period where Oz is stuck for what to do until The Great War. Following that, the monarchies are abandoned and the council systems with the Huntsmen Academies are born...as well as the Faunus War and Faunus Rights Revolution and Vytal Festival. None of THAT had Salem's hand in it.
Spoilers obviously for RWBY, and Naruto, under the cut.
As for what our heroes have accomplished, well, let's really look:
Stopping a master criminal that ran circles around other criminal organizations, the police, AND Ozpin and huntsmen he sent after them for years. Which then STOPPED crime, according to Qrow.
Safeguarding Vale, or at least aiding in its defense. They stopped the hack, Torchwick died (there goes any and all of Adam's new toys too thanks to them stopping the Breach), the Wyvern was frozen, and Neo turned on Cinder. Plus, Vale itself still stands thanks to them and isn't covered in Grimm (Beacon itself is, but last we saw? The teachers and others of Beacon were working to drive them out and keep them out of Vale).
The Nucklevee was storming up and down Mistral's countryside for DECADES before Team RNJR finally killed it in V4 (it's the same massive Grimm that attacked Ren's village and attacked other places in the modern day too).
Raven Branwen appears to have had a change of heart, if the V9 epilogue animatic is anything to go by. That's a HUGE change from Bandit Leader, Darwinist, "Survival of the fittest" Raven from V4 and V5.
Haven and Mistral as a whole were saved thanks to our heroes and attitudes toward Faunus IN MISTRAL have BEGUN to shift thanks to saving the ENTIRE KINGDOM from Adam. Because you can BET he wasn't ever going to stop with just blowing up the school. It's similar to Naruto and Sasuke saving the entire world at the end of Naruto. Sasuke still served a year's worth of jailtime that should've been a life sentence but was pardoned thanks to Naruto and Kakashi swaying the various Kages, considering his actions helped SAVE THE ENTIRE WORLD and Naruto vouched for him. Change like that isn't going to happen overnight, but saving an entire kingdom from being either blown up or swallowed by literally negative emotion demons SHOULD count for something! If it doesn't, then what? Just leave them to die? Hardly a heroic thing or moral thing to do! Leverage it for change in the country, though, and then you've got something.
According to the novels, Vacuoans attitudes towards outsiders are shifting thanks to Team CVFY, SSSN, and others helping to get through to them and teaming up to save everyone from The Crown and the Grimm that followed. It's a SLOW process, but still.
When Qrow and Ozpin, the supposed leaders and most experienced people, gave up when things got tough? Team RWBY, with help from Maria, helped them back into fighting shape. It's here where Ruby herself takes command (thus breaking one BIG status quo element of Ozpin being the one in charge).
Caroline Cordovin being reminded that she serves the people was another, after a huge fight, otherwise the city of Argus would've been wiped out.
Getting very close to uniting Mantle and Atlas counts, because that broke the status quo of "Atlas above all else". Ironwood going full fascist doesn't negate that accomplishment or their efforts in pushing him mainly.
Investigating into and arresting Jacques. Pity they had no real time to celebrate it, but unseating the patriarch of the Schnee family and head of the SDC, getting him shoved in jail, and immediately thereafter trying to use their ships to evacuate people in Mantle? Those aren't nothing.
Trapping Watts and Tyrian. Those two seemed...untouchable until that point.
I'd say getting the message out there at all and shattering Salem's aura of secrecy is another good thing. If the massive crowd of ships and the memorial was anything to go by from V9's epilogue animatic, there are a lot of people that saw and followed Ruby's message to meet in Vacuo and unite to face their common threat. As I said earlier, it'll take a long time to truly address everything but getting people to see eye to eye AT ALL after DECADES of tension is sure to bear some fruit.
Upsetting the Red Prince and beating him? Helping Little become Somewhat and having them and Juniper as the Ever After's protectors? SAVING and helping Neo realize a few things that she needs to change about herself? Hell, even helping Jaune through his problems and the Paper Pleasers ascending into the Gems, the Cat being trounced, and helping people survive the ARMY of Neo Jaberwockers is a good thing.
Heck, if you'd like me to get a little into Salem's status quo's that they've broken? They blew her up, turned at least three people that she had in her clutches against her, destroyed one of the largest Grimm she had in her possession, and have generally been a thorn in her side since the beginning. Salem's faction is down from an entire network of spies, turncoats, and villains...to just. four. people thanks to our heroes.
Basically, what I'm saying is this: The changes to the Status Quo in RWBY's entire story doesn't hinge on just Salem's actions by proxy. Everyone has a hand in changing the way things are going.
To truly expect everything to be on our heroes' shoulders is...well, to quote Chloe Bourgeois from Miraculous Ladybug? Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous.
Will they have a more active role to play in coming events? Absolutely. But it's worth pointing out their actions have had effects. From something as small as helping Penny have friends and getting Weiss and Blake to get along, to starting the uniting of the entire world, I truly believe our heroes have had major impacts.
It just requires a larger perspective.
