I think RWBY did a great job putting Pietro and Jacques in the same place (Atlas/Mantle) but make them diametrically opposed, in many ways. And from a personality standpoint, Weiss probably thought Pietro was everything her father wasn't, as a dad. And even when he showed he wasn't perfectly fine emitionally and tried to oppose the Amity launch in V8C5, it was because he was /scared to lose his own daughter/ (a second time)

Time to talk about a little writing pet peeve of mine, cuz I took a break from working on university projects to calm down with some reading and I've just come out more annoyed. So let's talk about bringing characters back. Ahem...
STOP BRINGING CHARACTERS BACK JUST TO KILL THEM!
Look, I get it. Killing characters off is great for drama and heartbreak. If used right, it can be a massive gut punch to your readers. However, using it wrong can seriously hurt or even destroy someone's enjoyment of your story. And having a character die and come back to life only to have them get killed off again is a surefire way of making people uninterested in your story.
I'm gonna use an example from Volume 8 of RWBY, so if you don't want spoilers for that, nows your time to look away.
So, Penny. Beautiful, sweet, lovely Penny. She died back in Volume 3, and her death was what catapulted the season into chaos. It was one of the most effective deaths I've seen in a good while, ripping apart the hearts of people who were watching while pushing the plot into overdrive. It was great.
Then, in Volume 7, Penny was brought back to life, cuz she was a robot, so she could be rebuilt. A lot of people took issue with this, but personally, I was kinda fine with it. Maybe that was just bias cuz I love Penny, but I was excited to see what the crew would do with her. So, what did they do with her?
They infected her with a virus that made her turn against the main characters, who then used a wish-granting genie to turn Penny human so it couldn't affect her anymore. Then they stabbed her in the chest. And since she isn't a robot anymore, they can't bring her back!
Do you see how unsatisfying that is? At that moment, I didn't feel heartbroken that a character I loved had died. I was just annoyed. It felt like the only reason she was brought back at all was so they could try and replicate the gut punch from Volume 3. It was lazy and frustrating. Legit, that moment is what made me stop watching RWBY entirely. After that and another incident in the same episode that frustrated me to no end, I was just done.
The main takeaway from this is that character death is such a fragile tool to play with. You can't just kill and revive characters on a whim and expect people to continue being invested. If you're gonna kill someone, you need to have a damn good reason for doing so. If you're gonna bring them back to life, you need an even better reason. And if you're gonna kill off a character that you've already brought back to life...
Don't. Just don't. Please.

Me: There’s a scene where my favorite red-headed character is floating into the air and her friends are trying to bring her back down, all while she is trying to take back control of her mind. The writers also likely killed off for real this time.
Someone: Are you referring to Max Mayfield or Penny Polendina?
Me: …
Me: …
Me: Yes

I saw @sid471 talking about James Ironwood and Adam Taurus, and it got me thinking about why Ironwood did what he did.
Ironwood's response to a 'breach in the lines' situation was to fall back and make a new line. And honestly, that'd probably be my strategy too. I know it is in every rts I've played.
The problem is that he *always* did that. In every situation from the global arena to his relationship with unaligned hunters to the walls of Mantle to the Ace Ops. The second there was a sign of the "lines" being compromised, he marked the whole thing as gone and moved to cut his losses. The more often this happened, the more sensitive he became to it, and the more extreme his reactions became. That pattern, at least, is something I think everyone is familiar with.
It really fits with his semblance, and I personally think Mettle definitely compounded his deterioration. Mettle is a good semblance for a huntsman, an okay semblance for a soldier, and a demonstrably disastrous semblance for a general.

If you take this into account, his decision making makes sense.
'We need communication back online, therefore we divert all resources to the Amity Tower'
'This is a dire military situation in a civilian area, so I need to instate martial law in order to prevent losses.'
'Martial Law is in effect, and Sleet is challenging it. I need to remove Sleet so I can do my job. The fastest way to do that is a gun.'
'Mantle is breached, so Mantle is fallen. There is nothing left to protect. So we should go where the Grimm can't follow.'
'RWBY&Co. is trying to stop me, therefore RWBY&Co. is my enemy. Qrow is part of RWBY&Co., therefore he is also my enemy.'
'RWBY&Co. are trying to save people I have marked as lost. They can not be saved means they will not be saved.'
'Marrow is deserting. Desertion is punishable by death. The kingdom is under martial law. I have a gun.'
'Winter has defected to RWBY&Co. My enemies. Defecting is punishable by death. The kingdom is under martial law. I have a gun.'
Ironwood's semblance didn't leave room for second thoughts, and often not even a second thought.

I mean, it's comforting to know that there's an ordinary day-night cycle in the Ever After.
But that means Volume 9 has taken place all in one day so far, which makes sense, but is in fact bonkers.
THIS IS THE SAME DAY AS 8x10. MONSTRA BLEW UP THIS MORNING. DINNER AT THE SCHNEE MANOR WAS 2 DAYS AGO. CLOVER WAS ALIVE.

nuts n dolts in itself is just. so romantic to me. like i get when people say they see it platonic but everything every aspect of their relationship is so romantic and full of love and adoration and the want to protect the other. the tragedy of the situation. the way that ruby completely and utterly broke down when the fake penny talked to ruby. the way penny sacrificed herself for the ‘greater good’, the way ruby collapses at the fact of this. ohh the romeo and juliet of it all.

I was honestly kinda taken aback that Weiss was so sad about the fall of Atlas, because…well, was it ever really a home to her?
It’s where she grew up, where she trained with Winter as a child. But it’s also where her father abused her and her mother neglected her, where her family’s legacy became the most twisted and where Weiss was miserable growing up.
I wonder if she would’ve mourned so much if she hadn’t had a few good months there with team RWBY most recently. The time where they lived at Atlas academy as a unit again after being reunited, where they became Huntresses and started hatching a plan. Yeah, the events of Volume 8 were terrible, but they were also like three days total.
I hope Weiss realizes the reason she felt at home wasn’t because she was in Atlas, but because she was with her team and her friends.

Separate aside, but I think people read too much into Yang's "Things haven't exactly worked out" line to Ruby in V8.
Like, all Yang did was point out the current ideas (That she took issue with initially) weren't working out. She wasn't saying she expected Ruby to be perfect and Ruby failed in that, its just a factual statement about their situation. Both she and Ruby hug the next time they see each other.
Hell, Yang herself has a way more intense stand off with Ren about the same topic and functionally defends their decisions as "Not perfect" but "Better than doing nothing".
I dunno, I just think if she's gonna beat herself up over anything it'll be not pushing harder to get Ruby to open up to her, rather than not blindly obeying Ruby.

Are you normal or do you often think about how Penny refused to give up in V8C5, supporting Amity even with the virus eating away at her. How she's the main reason Ruby's message went out to the world, sending help the heroes' way as we see in the V9 finale. Cause I do.
