2021 Mrs. Wisconsin America and Miss Wisconsin for America Strong Pageant
Wausau/Mosinee, WI – I had the opportunity to judge for the 2021 Mrs. Wisconsin America and Miss Wisconsin for America Strong Pageant on June 5, 2021. It was an honor to sit on the judging panel for all these lovely ladies competing for the coveted aforementioned titles.
As a judge, I am duty bound not to discuss the process beyond telling you that director Natalie Boyd ran a well organized and brisk pageant competition without some of the gobbledy gook that forces some pageants to run for 4 hours and put half the audience into a medically induced coma. This was just the competition and it ran like a Swiss watch as the pageant unfolded. Assistant Coordinator Michelle Weisheim (a former) assisted keeping things moving and getting us to where we needed to go. Emcee and Mrs. Galaxy 2020/2021 Crystal Cavey did a wonderful job keeping the show running smoothly with her trademark smile on her face the entire time.
In an exciting announcement, the Fabulous Face winners for Miss and Mrs. are being awarded trips to the national competition in fabulous Las Vegas, NV!
Joining me in the judging duties was Dr. Alexey Markelov MD, FACS, Jayne Black, and Carrie Reichartz and we had a wonderful time in the nice air conditioning as the competition (and the outdoors) heated up! We had a wonderful group of competitors, but in the end we needed to make some difficult choices and name our title and award winners, which follows:

THREE MAIN AREAS FOR FEEDBACK
1. Everyone (Mostly Non-DMAT friends) could tell it was not fitting together
From my previous post, I said that it was a rushed recording because Recording Day was just that bad. I, to be completely honest, only managed to complete my song on the day of recording. I sent everyone the different sections of my song. Partly cause I didn’t want to have too much restrictions on the team. I know it’s hard to have to do something exactly the same way someone else wants it especially with the lack of time. I think I let everyone do too much of what they want that they just failed to blend overall. many mistakes were made too, like wrong keyboard playing and flat vocals. Moreover, they realised i just slapped the chorus multiple times without changing anything so they realised i was really short of time because they know I’m not someone to do half passed work without a proper reason.
2. There was nothing ‘impactful’ in the entire song (Also mostly Non-DMAT friends)
This point was the one that I realised too the moment I bounced it. I’m so pissed at myself because if I had spent more time working and listening to my the recording after it was recorded I would have able to tell. I was told that there were too many runs and no change in dynamics and melody. They said there was no climax to the song. Which did have me a bit unhappy. I didn’t want it to be that conventional. I mean why couldn’t my song have no peak but still sound good? But I realised in the market if I really wanted people to listen and loop my song they need a peak. Furthermore, the people who pointed the no “BAM” moment were mostly only consumers of music. I was thinking of pausing after pre-chorus, adding a little build-up before entering chorus with heaviness, And switching up a few keys at the final chorus. Maybe that will give the “peak” that people are looking for.
3. Physical Recording was just Bad
I didn’t expect this to be a problem but it was. My DMAT friends all tell me that there’s distortion and I was really upset. Some even said that I didn’t have good spacial awareness in my recording. I used a Behringer omnidirectional microphone for the room mic to capture the keyboard and cello bouncing off the walls. The keyboard was also directly plugged into MOTU and the AKG Condenser into MOTU for Vocals. I thought it pretty good but it clearly didn’t show in my recording. Rachel told me after it was because the AKG was not the best because that model made everything sound bright and it picks up a lot of things in the room other than vocals. So, I’m guessing it’s the AKG that’s causing most of the distortion. Another one would be the Behringer B5, I think I gained it too high when I was recording. It wasn’t peaking per say but it did pick up a lot of noise.
Again, My song itself is something I still need to work on and Secondly, my recording techniques can use a lot more work. Hopefully I do clear these things up as the weeks go by. I’m happy that all my friends encourage me and tell me that my song has potential. So, hopefully I can record that for them to hear!
