DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS de Sam Raimi: L'Opéra de la terreur

Après le massivement populaire Spider-Man: No Way Home, les attentes étaient élevées pour le prochain film du Marvel Cinematic Universe. Puis la découverte du chef-d’œuvre Everything Everywhere All at Once a mis la barre infiniment haute pour les histoires de multivers. Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, le visionnement de presse du nouveau Marvel était précédé de la projection en boucle de la très attendue bande-annonce de Avatar: The Way of Water, qui m’en a mis plein la vue (en 3D!) et même ému un brin (la baleine!). 

Bref, il a fallu un léger effort pour mettre de côté tout ça et tenter d’accueillir Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness pour ce qu’il est, surtout que la première portion du film a éveillé quelques doutes chez moi. Notamment à cause d’une surabondance de CGI et d’action frénétique, où la réalisation de Sam Raimi (un habitué des films de super-héros, ayant été à la barre de la première trilogie Spider-Man et, surtout, de Darkman) semble initialement assez générique, ne se distinguant pas tant du travail de Scott Derrickson (ici producteur exécutif) sur le premier Doctor Strange, outre un certain caméo aussi inévitable qu’hilarant.

 Puis il y a cette impression insistante que la continuité du MCU nécessite de plus en plus d’exposition pour tout relier ensemble. Outre le susmentionné film de Derrickson — dont on retrouve le protagoniste Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), son fidèle acolyte Wong (Benedict Wong) et son ancienne flamme Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) — il y a dans le scénario de Michael Waldron (le créateur de la série Loki) beaucoup de références à Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame, ainsi qu’à la série WandaVision, car Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (la toujours excellente Elizabeth Olsen) est un personnage clé de ce nouveau film.

Cela dit, à mi-chemin du récit, alors que la quête de notre héros à travers le multivers au côté du nouveau personnage America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) les mène dans une dimension où les Illuminati existent (je n’en dis pas plus, mais les fans de comic books doivent déjà saliver), Raimi s’impose de plus en plus, à grands coups de gags étonnamment brutaux, en plus d’éléments évoquant carrément le cinéma d’horreur (avec l'aide précieuse de la musique de Danny Elfman), jusqu’à un jouissif dernier acte qui n’est rien de moins que la version Marvel d’un film de la trilogie Evil Dead! 

Non, ça n’atteint jamais le niveau de Everything Everywhere All at Once, malgré quelques échos narratifs. Mais en ce qui me concerne, en tant qu’admirateur de longue date de Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness est ultimement encore plus satisfaisant que Spider-Man: No Way Home.
