2 Japanese navy helicopters crash in the Pacific Ocean during training, leaving 1 dead and 7 missing
TOKYO (AP) — Two Japanese navy helicopters carrying eight crew members crashed in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo during a nighttime training flight after possibly colliding with each other, the country’s defense minister said Sunday. One crew member who had been recovered from the waters was later pronounced dead, while rescuers searched for seven others who were still missing. The two SH-60K…

Do we really have to meet this guy?" Joe Biden demanded.
Rahm Emmanuel shrugged helplessly at him, giving him a sympathetic look, even as he piled the papers forcefully into Biden's hands. Papers that usually would be Obama's to have to suffer through, meetings and paperwork and far too many conversations on the phone.
He rubbed his eyes, closing the swollen lids briefly, tuning out to Rahm's words.
" Sorry." the Chief of Staff admitted. " But you know how busy the President is these days. Speaker Boehner's- uh, well-"
The Vice President raised an eyebrow at him. "… a dick?"
Rahm chuckled forcefully. " He's a piece of work, that man." Still, he looked remarkably upbeat for someone who Biden knew was as overworked as he was himself.
Biden tried to give out a weary grin of his own, but his muscles felt far too taught from the piles of work that had been piled upon him yesterday and the day before and today.
" Right." he said, rubbing his arm to work the cramps away from his bones. " Who's next on the list?"
Rahm checked the paper for him diligently.
" Uhh… Donald J. Trump." he gave a quick smile. Biden felt a sudden urge to rip it off his face." Should be easy."
The Vice President groaned.
————————
" Come right in, sir!" Rahm said cheerily as Trump walked in.
Biden heaved a private sigh as he turned to look at the grinning man, thick skin glowing almost orange with the tan, eyes crinkling with a smug smile.
They shook hands almost robotically, Biden trying his best to smile at the camera, even as his own mouth felt dry and numb.
The sooner we get this over with…
The good news, at least, was that Trump seemed to be having fun with the attention. Biden had never met the Don himself but hey, important guy with the Republicans' apparently, so it felt pretty important to at least get on decent relationships with him.
" Alright, alright!" he heard Rahm pipe up suddenly from beside him, the smiling man waving frantically as he ushered some of the press away. " That's enough! Sorry guys! Oh, John! John, Betty, could you please escort some of these guys-"
The noise churned into a hum in the back of Biden's brain. He stared thankfully at Rahm before turning to look at Trump again, who seemed to be waiting for him to start speaking.
" Right!" Biden said instantly, jumping into the conversation. His throat ached, and it felt like there were veins snapping from behind his eyes. " Donald J. Trump, was it! We've heard great things about you."
Trump didn't respond to that ( which was annoying. Biden just wanted to get this over with. ), instead looking at Emmanuel instead.
" That's your Chief of Staff?" he asked. " He looks like a good kid- really good kid."
" What?" Biden asked.
Trump shook his head. " He's a good pick." he said simply. " His name's- what was it, Rahms? I memorized it, seems like a good guy, those are rare these days, you know. Good pick. Too bad he's jewish."
….. Okay then. He could. He could work with this.
( This was the guy who almost ran against them in 2011? No wonder no one thought much of it then, this guy was a fucking joke. )
" Yeah, he's a really good guy." Biden said, straining his lips. " Anyways, Mr. Trump, I was hoping we could talk about your latest buisness initiative in the- uh, Carribean, was it?"
It slipped out of his mouth before he noticed. It wasn't the carribean, he kicked himself. Goddamnit. He was definately getting delirious.
Luckily or not, Trump didn't seem to notice. He beamed.
" It's not much." he said. " Just one of many- I have- I'm a a big buisnessguy, you know. Lots of buisnesses. Lots. And people always ask me how I have so much time to organize all this, and all by myself, you know, and I always tell them, you know, I'm an organized guy, I'm a creative guy! It's easy to me, running all this- like my own little country, you know?"
There was no way he was running his entire corporation by himself if he was this upbeat and mind-numbingly talkative all the time.
Biden stifled the urge to glare.
" Yes." he agreed. " Well. The thing is, Mr. Trump, that your decision to try and place a branch of Trump Entrepreneur Initiative in Syria, well.. to put it simply, it didn't go through."
" What? Why? I've already begun planning the layout. Bought loans and all that- I want my buisness there! I want my buisness in that place, Syria. It'll be good for them, I know it, they'll thank me, I know it. Besides, what do the Syrians- what do they know?"
Biden sighed patiently. " They don't want you to build TEI because they're undergoing a civil war at the current moment, and-" he stopped, not sure of how to explain it. " Well. They just… don't want you to build anything new in the capitol. And of course, you brought this matter up with us, so-"
" We are, obviously, very sorry, but you have to understand that the political enviroment makes it incredibly risky to build something as massive as what you want in this location. We could suggest probably another location, probably somewhere safer and less volatile. There's lots of options, of course. Turkey or perhaps Yemen, is a good bet, if you still want the Initiative stationed somewhere close to the middle east, but there are other options-"
Yeah okay that was enough.
It was clear that Trump wasn't listening. And Biden wasn't feeling too good either.
He swallowed again, tasting sandpaper in his mouth. " So yeah." he said at last. Trump shook his head vigorously.
" That's ridiculous." he declared adamently. " Just get them to let me through then. You can do that, can't you?"
" The current Syrian government refused you. We can't afford to go against a request as simple and reasonable as that."
" Reasonable?" he seemed dumbfounded. Irritation burst quickly inside of him.
" Yes. Reasonable." Biden muttered tiredly. " Anyways-" he tried to get up.
A mistake.
All the exhaustion that seemed to have been lurking inside him the entire time burst out all at once, instantly sending him to the floor.
Biden groaned instantly, feeling his head hit painfully onto the carpet, and his knees buckle with a painful snap.
Rahm shouted quickly as he realized what was happening, the chief of staff running forwards from where he was in the doorway to usher the rest of the press--and Trump, out.
Biden groaned as he heard Rahm's faint voice, fading quickly as he slumped into the pent up tiredness.
" Oh- Joe! Joe, are you okay? Oh, someone! Someone get a-"
He fell asleep.
————————————
“ We thought you were going to die!"
Obama nodded.
" Next time, just tell us when you need a break." the President agreed. " I can do some extra work outside of dealing with Congress, you know, and with so little other options, I can’t have my Vice President overexerting himself with my duties. And don't worry about the press. We've got that under control."
BIden rolled his eyes at the concern in their voice. It was annoying to hear them speak about him as though he wasn't a full grown adult.
" I know, sir." he said. " I'm sorry for not telling you." Biden stabbed viciously at the salad before a thought struck him.
" Oh, yes. How was- how did the talk with the buisnessman turn out?"
" Trump? Oh, he's a minor guy. Nothing much." Rahm said. " He was pretty forgiving after we told him that you fainted."
" Oh."
The words didn't register until a moment later.
" Wait, you told him what-"
" A side note!" Rahm added cheerily, much to Obama's affectionate eye roll. The man brought a large bundle of blossons and flowers up to Biden’s attention- they looked distinctively and repusively Floridian.
Rahm squealed. “ Look! You got sent flowers! Isn't that sweet?"
" Don't tell me-"
" Guess who they're from!"
" No!"
Rahm laughed.

US ‘Satisfied’ with Japan’s Dumping Nuclear-Contaminated Water Betrays Its Image as Global Leader in Environment Protection: Observers
— Global Times Staff Reporters | August 26, 2023
Tumblr media

Defying mounting opposition and contrary to its self-styled image as a global leader in environment protection, the US Department of State endorsed Tokyo's controversial dumping of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, saying the US is "satisfied with Japan's safe, transparent, and science-based process."
Endorsing Japan's selfish and irresponsible practice that harms world environment and health of human beings in the planet, the US trampled on its own image as a leader in global environment protection, exposing its selfishness and hypocrisy of prioritizing its geopolitical interests above the long-term well-being of the people around the world, observers reached by the Global Times said.
As the US publicly backs the Japanese government's plan to dump contaminated water into the ocean, media reports quoting data from Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan revealed that the US was making the biggest moves in decreasing imports of agricultural and aquatic products from Japan in the first half of 2023.
Data showed that the US is the country that reduced the imports of Japanese agriculture, forestry and fisheries the most in the first half of the year, and the main production areas of the three kinds of food are all in the affected areas of the dumping of nuclear contaminated water, according to media reports.

Fijian media reported that a coalition of NGOs asked the Fijian government, and other Pacific Islands countries, to call for international action to stop Japan's planned dumping. Photo: VCG
In an apparent political gesture, US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel claimed to eat fish from Fukushima to show support for Tokyo's decision during his visit to the region on August 31.
Though being well-aware of the risks brought by the nuclear-contaminated water to surrounding oceans and the entire global environment, the US has succumbed to its political interests and is going against its image portrayed as a leading role for environment protection activist, Lü Chao, an expert on Korean Peninsula issues at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Saturday.
"It is hilarious to see the hypocrisy and double standards held by the US by covering up Japan's extremely selfish and irresponsible wrongdoing," Lü said.
"Acts and deeds from the US show that it purely considers Japan's act of harming global environment and human beings of all countries from a geopolitical perspective. The US's real intention is to tie Japan to its chariot of geopolitical games," Li Haidong, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Saturday.
Without the indulgence of the US, the Japanese decision on dumping of nuclear-polluted water would not have been so arbitrary. Japan opened a Pandora's box on Thursday with the strong backing of the US, allowing crisis to plague other countries and the international community, Li added.

Amid wide opposition and outcry from the Chinese public that the contaminated-water would eventually pose health risks to products from Japan, the Japanese Embassy in China issued a statement on the Japanese edition page on Friday, reminding Japanese staying in China of being careful not to speak Japanese loudly outside their homes as the possibility of encountering accidents cannot be ruled out.
The reminder triggered strong backlash among Chinese netizens late Friday, with many saying "it is the Japanese government we are opposing not the Japanese people" and some accused Japanese government of attempting to divert attention from being targeted due to its insistence on dumping contaminated water.
Lü told the Global Times Tokyo's hype over the safety of Japanese nationals in China servers its purpose of packaging itself as a victim caught in a cycle of deteriorating China-Japan ties and isolating China in its foreign policy while catering to the US' Asia-Pacific strategy to counter China.
Japanese farm minister Tetsuro Nomura on Friday even expressed his surprise that China was taking the responsive measures by suspending imports of aquatic products from Japan, Mainichi Shimbun reported, saying he was "very surprised and completely unexpected."
Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao had said China's decision to suspend imports of aquatic products from Japan is reasonable and necessary. The responsibility for this situation lies entirely with Japan, and Japan should reflect on its own actions, Ambassador Wu said.
Japan's actions have provoked strong opposition in China, protest against its dumping the contaminated water into the sea has been mounted in South Korea, with lawmakers of the Democratic Party and the Justice Party planning to visit Fukushima from Sunday and Monday, according to the National Assembly on Thursday.

From Atlanta to Chicago [...]. These cop cities are training grounds for police violence and must be dismantled to restore a world where life is precious.
In a stunning yet utterly predictable act, Chicago’s “cop academy” has officially opened on the West Side complete with a ribbon-cutting in front of fake street signs and fake housing.
In a city reeling from extreme poverty, a lack of affordable housing, myriad environmental injustices, food apartheid, [...] and in a city where at least 65,000 people are experiencing homelessness, the leadership of the city of Chicago spent $128 million to build fake homes on the city’s resource-starved West Side where officers can practice the violence and brutality that they will mete out to Chicago residents.
---
In a disturbing photo, Mayor Lightfoot, [...] Fire Commissioner Nance-Holt and others smile while cutting a red ribbon, proud to have brought this into being. Adding insult to injury, the thirty-two-acre cop academy was built on the city’s West Side, where decades of racist policy (such as redlining and other housing discrimination and disinvestment) by the city government in this majority-nonwhite community have already given way to poverty and population loss. (In just one example, the Rahm Emanuel administration closed half of the West Side’s mental health clinics in 2012, then shuttered numerous West Side schools in his historic closure of fifty schools in 2013.) [...]
---
Lest there be any doubt as to whether or not West Siders actually want this cop academy, in 2018 the organizers of the No Cop Academy campaign polled West Garfield Park residents [...]. 95 percent recommended that the city invest in something else - beyond the Chicago Police Department [...]
What kind of society eagerly spends millions of dollars to build fake neighborhoods, but cannot muster the funds to provide actual housing for the unhoused? What kind of society would rather stage and practice violence than provide mental health resources or violence interruption to communities reeling from it everyday? Unfortunately, such questions arise on a routine basis in this city.
---
And it is not only in this city. [...] For Chicago, like so many cities across the US, we must remember that policing is not a “rational” response to something called “crime.” Instead, it is a war on poor people (particularly Black and Brown poor people). As Ruth Wilson Gilmore argues, this war treats incarceration as a solution to social and economic ills while conveniently stripping poor and working-class people of color of their political rights and autonomy. [...]
---
Additionally, in a cynical move decried by Chicago youth organizers, a chapter of the Boys and Girls Club is set to open at the facility. This is despite Chicago having the second most killings by police of youth under eighteen in the country, and despite several high-profile CPD murders of youth such as thirteen-year-old Adam Toledo and twenty-two-year-old Anthony Alvarez just in the last few years. [...]
They want a fake village where no one lives or thrives. They spend millions on a theme park to practice surveilling, policing, and controlling people. This vision can never be a home for anyone, and thus the Cop Academy should have no place in our city if we are to make Chicago, someday, a true home for its residents. [...]
--
We must refuse to allow such sadism to become normalized, and continue to make clear in the face of a city leadership which laughs, that, as Ruth Wilson Gilmore says, “where life is precious, life is precious.” [...]
Like the brave protesters facing off against the horrific violence of Atlanta’s proposed Cop City, organizers in Chicago have fought a valiant campaign against the cop academy since it was first proposed during the Emanuel administration. The No Cop Academy campaign, led by Black youth across the city, has led countless protests and actions and was endorsed by more than 100 organizations. [...]
Though the structures have been built, the fight against the cop academy (as well as similar projects in Atlanta and elsewhere) must continue: we must transform every fake cop neighborhood into real, affordable housing and vibrant neighborhoods where every person has what they need to thrive.

So I had no idea that Ari Emanuel of WME is Rahm Emanuel of the Obama Administration's brother. Rahm Emanuel (who was formerly Obama's chief of staff before becoming Chicago mayor) is the US Ambassador to Japan. And now Harry is going to Japan.
I know WME's contract is with Meghan exclusively but I wonder if Ari is pulling any strings for Harry in Japan in case it helps with Meghan. I'm leaning towards yes - if Harry ends up in a meet and greet with Rahm, it's probably safe to assume Ari set it up.
I doubt it. It would not be a good look for Rahm.

he post-Joe McCarthy era and the candidacy of Barry Goldwater once prompted liberal political scientist Richard Hofstadter to chronicle a supposedly long-standing right-wing “paranoid style” of conspiracy-fed extremism.
But far more common, especially in the 21st century, has been a left-wing, hysterical style of inventing scandals and manipulating perceived tensions for political advantage.
Or, in the immortal words of Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, “Never let a serious crisis go to waste.”
The 2008 economic emergency crested on September 7, with the near collapse of the home mortgage industry.
Obama took office on January 20, 2009, more than four months after the meltdown. In that interim, the officials had finally restored financial confidence and plotted a course of economic recovery.
No matter. The Obama administration never stopped hyping the financial meltdown as if it had just occurred. That way, it rammed through Obamacare, massive deficit spending, and the vast expansion of the federal government. All that stymied economic growth and recovery for years.
In 2016, Donald Trump was declared Hitler-like and an existential threat to democracy.
Amid this derangement syndrome, any means necessary to stop him were justified: the Russian collusion hoax, impeachment over a phone call, or the Hunter laptop disinformation farce.
Eventually, the left sought to normalize the once unthinkable: removing the leading presidential candidate from state ballots and indicting him in state and local courts.
Nothing was off limits—not forging a federal court document, calling for a military coup, rioting on Inauguration Day, or radically changing the way Americans voted in presidential elections.
In October 2017, allegations surfaced about serial sexual predation by liberal cinema icon Harvey Weinstein.
The #MeToo furor immediately followed.
At first, accusers properly outed dozens of mostly liberal celebrities, actors, authors, and CEOs for their prior and mostly covered-up sexual harassment and often assault.
But soon, the once legitimate movement had morphed into general hysteria. Thousands of men (and women) were persecuted for alleged offenses, often sexual banter or rude repartee, committed decades prior.
#MeToo jumped the shark with the left-wing effort to take down conservative Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Would-be accusers surfaced from his high school days, 35 years earlier, but without any supporting evidence or witnesses for their wild, lurid charges.
#MeToo hysteria ended when too many liberal grandees were endangered. Most dramatically, former Joe Biden senatorial aide Tara Reade came forward during the 2020 campaign cycle with charges that front-runner Joe Biden had once sexually assaulted her—and was trashed by the liberal media.
The outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States during the winter of 2020 prompted an even greater hysteria.
Without scientific evidence, federal health czars Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins were able to convince the Trump administration to shut down the economy in the country’s first national quarantine.
Suddenly, it became a thought crime to question the wisdom of six-foot social distancing, of mandatory mask wearing, of the Wuhan virology lab’s origin of the COVID virus, or of off-label use of prescription drugs.
Left-wing politicians and celebrities, from Hillary Clinton and Gavin Newsom to Jane Fonda, all blurted out the political advantages that the lockdowns offered—from recalibrating capitalism and health care to ensuring the 2020 defeat of Donald Trump.
The COVID hysteria magically ended when Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Suddenly, the lies about the bat or pangolin origins of the virus faded. The damage from the quarantines could no longer be repressed. And herd immunity gradually mitigated the epidemic.
The lockdown caused untold economic chaos, suicides, and health crises.
One result was the 120 days of looting, arson, death, destruction, and violence spawned by Antifa and Black Lives Matter in the aftermath of the tragic death of George Floyd while in police custody in May 2020.
Suddenly, a hysterical lie took hold: American police were waging war against black males.
The details around Floyd’s sudden death—he was in the act of committing a felony, resisting arrest, suffering from coronary artery disease and the after-effects of COVID, and being high on dangerous drugs—were off limits.
The riot toll reached $2 billion in property damage, over 35 deaths, and 1,500 injured law enforcement officers. A federal courthouse, a police precinct, and a historic church were torched.
Police forces were defunded. Emboldened left-wing prosecutors nullified existing laws.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion commissars spread throughout American higher education as meritocracy came under assault.
Racial essentialism triumphed. Racially segregated dorms, campus spaces, and graduations were normalized.
Everything from destroying the southern border to dropping SAT requirements for college admission followed.
Sometimes real, sometimes hyped crises lead to these contrived left-wing hysterias—like the January 6 violent “armed insurrection” or the “fascist” “ultra-MAGA” threat.
Otherwise, the progressive movement cannot enact its unpopular agendas. So it must scare the people silly and gin up chaos to destroy its perceived enemies—any crisis it can.

Summary of the November 13, 2023 column by Jonathan Martin:
Stop publicly resenting his critics such as David Axelrod.
Bring anti-Trump Republicans such as Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney into his corner.
Have the anti-Trump Republicans and centrist Democrats preach against the dangers of the No Labels campaign.
Appoint Rahm Emanuel, “one of the most ferocious operatives of our times,” as campaign chairman.
Other reshuffling and increased campaign staffing.
Send Bill and Hillary Clinton as Mideast peace envoys.
Feature governors, senators, and cabinet secretaries prominently in the campaign to drive home that it is a team, not just Biden himself.
Choose a more prominent figure to chair the Democratic National Committee.
Enlist younger figures in the Congressional Black Caucus.
Don’t brag about “Bidenomics.” Do something to actually cut inflation and then brag about that.
Lash at Trump and the Republicans for siding with the wealthy.
Talk about abortion every day. If Biden can’t bring himself to do it, the vice president and governors must. Put abortion rights on as many state ballots as possible.
Speak at a military base town and criticize Sen. Tuberville for blocking military promotions.
Convene Jewish and Muslim college students who have been targeted for harassment.
Speak about immigration and the border.
Take a stand against shoplifting and other crimes.
Put Biden in settings that highlight his strengths rather than weaknesses.
After Hunter Biden’s case is resolved, sit down for a major media interview and honestly answer every question.
Be forward looking and tell voters what he will do for them in a second term.
Click through to read a lot of details.
