Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook and Mueller Hut, New Zealand
Day 123 – Lake Tekapo and Dark Sky Reserve
I woke up in my camper well after the sun had risen, still a little tired after my many hours of driving the day before. Opening the trunk to make coffee in my make-shift kitchen, I finally had a chance to take in the landscape around me. Omarama is located in a highland basin of grassland, located between mountain ranges. The Ahuriri River ran directly next to my campsite, and as I packed up, fisherman began arriving, dressed in river waders for a day of fly fishing trout.
Heading North out of Omarama towards Twizel, my route was surrounded by wide, open plains, ringed with snowcapped mountains in the distance, including Mount Cook. This area of the South Island was where many scenes in Lord of the Rings were shot, as it was a stand in for the Kingdom of Rohan. The LOTR geek in me was pretty stoked, as I felt that I had been dropped directly into Middle-Earth!
As I continued north, Mount Cook loomed progressively larger on the horizon. The tallest mountain in New Zealand, surrounded by a jagged landscape of rock, ice and glaciers, Mount Cook was simply magnificent, even from a great distance. Its Maori name, Aoraki, is quite fitting, as it literally translates to “Cloud Piercer”. The mountain and the surrounding national park have long been popular destinations for Kiwi mountaineers, including Sir. Edmund Hillary – a New Zealander who was the first man to summit Mount Everest.
I stopped along the shores of Lake Pukaki to admire the stunning landscape around me. A bright, turquoise colour, the lake’s vivid shade was caused by glacial run-off, which carries minerals and finely powdered rock downstream in meltwater. Looking straight down the lake, Mount Cook towered over the far end, quite an impressive sight! Taking in the scenery, I spent some time wandering along the shoreline, taking photos, and admiring the pink and purple lupins scattered along the water.

Lake Pukaki
Leaving Lake Pukaki behind, I drove another 30 minutes before reaching my next destination for the night, at Lake Tekapo. This small hamlet is located on an equally scenic turquoise lake, slightly smaller thank Lake Pukaki. I checked into my campsite to park my camper, and wandered into the town of Tekapo for lunch.
I spent the following few hours relaxing along the waterfront and taking photos, before I had some seriously bad luck. My Nikon was (presumably) stolen – it was like it had vanished into thin air. To this day, I am still not exactly sure how it happened, as one moment I had the DSLR in my bag, and the next it was gone. My best guess is that I had left it on a picnic table when I briefly stepped away to take some photographs with my phone. It couldn’t have been more than 10 minutes between when I had last used it, and when I realized it was missing. Even more mystifying was that there was almost no one around in this small town. I was devastated. All of my photos from the previous days had been on that camera, along with all of the photos I had taken in previous countries and not yet downloaded onto my Ipad. The rest of my afternoon was blur – I searched the area methodically, asked everyone I met if they had found a camera, left my contact information with all of the businesses in town, and called in a police report with my contact information. Despite all of these steps, I never saw my camera again.
After my fruitless efforts to find my missing DSLR, I was feeling exhausted, isolated and very lonely. After a few pep calls from my family back home, I fell asleep for the rest of the afternoon in the back of my camper. Fortunately, I felt more upbeat after my long nap, and shifted into problem solving mode, researching and formulating a plan to replace my camera. Although the purchase of a new DSLR was certainly not in the trip budget I had originally planned, I knew that this was an investment that I would not regret, and would be well worth it for my remaining months of travel.

Lake Tekapo
As the night began to fall, a dazzling array of stars began to pop out overhead. Lake Tekapo is in the centre of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, a designated 1,700 square mile area with very little light pollution to interfere with the observation of stars, galaxies and planets in the night sky. In other words – it was super dark! The streetlights in the town at night were also very dim, and spread out to a bare minimum.
Shortly before midnight, I bundled up and headed back into Tekapo Village, as I had booked a nighttime stargazing tour at the nearby Mount John Observatory. We boarded a bus equipped with special red headlights, to avoid interfering with the photometry of the telescopes. We were also given our own mini red flashlights to safely walk around the observatory grounds. As our bus wound up the mountain in the dark, our driver turned on some space themed music – from “Rocketman” to “Space Oddity”, pumping us up!
Tumblr media
Mount John Observatory
Arriving at the observatory, our small group spent the next two hours observing the night sky, learning about the telescopes, the research conducted in the facility, and different types of celestial objects. Mount John Observatory has 5 massive telescopes, and countless smaller telescopes that we had a chance to look through. We got to observe and learn about globular clusters, the Magellan Clouds, the Gemini Twins, the Orion and Tarantula Nebulas, and Alpha and Beta Centauri, which form the Southern Cross (found on Australia and New Zealand’s flag). Incredibly, all of the large telescopes can be controlled remotely, and we saw one of the large telescopes move around – while being controlled from Boston!
Tumblr media
That evening, the stars were brighter and clearer than I had even seen them, and I was completely mesmerized. I had always loved watching the night sky in Canada, and come from a family that does too (my dad literally bought a telescope as his “mid-life crisis”), and it was fascinating orienting myself to the Southern Hemisphere, with a brand-new set of constellations and stars. To cap it all off, we ended the chilly evening of stargazing with a steaming cup of hot chocolate – a perfect end to the perfect night.
Day 124 – Mount Cook and Mueller Hut
It was a spectacular, bluebird morning as I stocked up on groceries in Tekapo and retraced my route back towards Mount Cook. Driving the length of stunning Lake Pukaki, I arrived in Mount Cook Village shortly before noon. I checked in at the Department of Conservation office, and picked up a pass to stay at Mueller Hut, my destination for the night. Located on the Sealy Mountain range, this remote alpine hut is built at an elevation of 1,800m, and is surrounded by a ring of glaciers, ice cliffs, and New Zealand’s highest mountains, including Mount Cook. It is only accessible via an advanced alpine hike, and takes about 4 hours to get to from the trailhead.
I parked my campervan at White Horse Hill Campground, and packed my bag with the essentials I would need for the following 24-hours, including snacks, a bottle of wine (my post-hike reward!) a sleeping bag and many warm layers. Mueller Hut is a “pack-in, pack-out” hut, where all hikers must be completely self-sufficient, and leave no trace upon departure.
Tumblr media
Sealy Tarns with Mount Cook and Mueller moraine in the distance
As I set off along the trailhead of the Sealy Tarns Track, I briefly facetimed a group of my friends back home, who were all up at my friend Riley’s cottage in Canada. In moments like that, technology amazes me – as I was able to show them Mount Cook and my hiking trail from the other side of the world! As I continued along the tramp, the path got progressively steeper, and before long I had a sweeping view of the Mueller Glacier and the terminal Mueller Lake, which was surrounded by a massive moraine wall (composed of debris left behind from the receding glacier). The landscape was vast, wild and desolate, and left me completely in awe.
Tumblr media
Canadians approaching Mueller Hut
I stopped for a break at Sealy Tarns, and had the good fortune of meeting two Canadians from Vancouver, Brendin and Meghan, who were also heading to Mueller Hut for the night. Brendin was a professional photographer, and kindly offered to take some photos for me. This was a welcome suggestion, as I was definitely missing my DLSR this day, finding it was hard to capture the beauty around me with only an Iphone! We continued onwards towards the hut, ascending along a zig-zagging path of alpine scrub before reaching a challenging scree slope, loose gravel slipping easily beneath our feet. Passing through a large rock field over the ridge, the trail turned into a “choose your own adventure”, as we clamoured around massive boulders, trying to keep an eye out for the orange trail markers.
Tumblr media
Mueller Hut
Finally, we caught sight of Mueller Hut in the distance. Bright red and located in the shadow of Mount Olliver, Mueller Hut was originally built in 1914, where it was used as a shelter when exploring the nearby glacier. Since this time, several new huts have been erected in the same location, although wintertime avalanches have destroyed several of these shelters in the past. The current hut was built in 2003 and was constructed on a strong platform and metal frame, designed to withstand severe alpine weather. Fortunately, since I was completing the hike in the summer, I did not have to worry about avalanches, although I could easily see how making this trek in the wintertime could be extremely dangerous.
Arriving at the hut, we could quickly see that it was designed for communal living – with a total capacity for 28 people, there were two rooms with stacked bunk beds, jammed closely together, and a large shared kitchen and deck. Next to the kitchen, there were rainwater tanks with potable water to use for cooking. A short distance from the hut, there were two elevated drop toilets, built on long stilts to ensure access during heavy winter snowfall. While the amenities were rustic (and private space virtually non-existant) I loved it! Over the rest of the day, I met many fellow hikers, mostly travelling from the UK, Israel and other parts of New Zealand. We were a congenial bunch, and later spent the evening playing cards and Combio, sharing our wine and food.
Tumblr media
Mueller Hut
It was very cold and windy up at the hut, despite it being the height of summer. I spent some time wandering around outside, admiring the massive nearby glacier and eventually watching the sun go down over Mount Cook. Keas - alpine parrots endemic to NZ - flew overhead, occasionally landing to check us out. Nicknamed “the clown of the mountains”, I could quickly see that Keas were curious birds. A fellow tramper had left his backpack unattended, and it didn’t take long before the Kea was pecking away at it before being chased off. The hut warden laughingly told us that he had known of a Kea that once carried off a visitor’s passport – and warned us to be careful!
Along the glacier, long, thin waterfalls ran off the ice, carrying glacial meltwater into the valley below. Throughout the evening, we would occasionally hear loud booming noises, resulting from large chunks of ice calving off the glacier. As we all went to bed, we could hear the wind pounding on the metal siding of the hut, a powerful reminder of how unforgiving the alpine weather could be.
Day 125 – Mount Cook and Christchurch
Tumblr media
View Over the Hooker Valley at Dawn
I woke up with a few other hikers at dawn to watch the sunrise over the mountains. It was a blustery, frigid day, and we were only able to catch glimpses of the sun through the heavy clouds which were drifting over the nearby peaks. With the hut warden advising us of bad weather expected in the alpine that day, I had a small breakfast and quickly packed up my sleeping bag and bag, preparing for my descent down the mountain. Dark, stormy clouds began to spill over the nearby glacier as I departed, and I hustled to get over the ridge and descend the treacherous, scree slope before the weather turned. Unfortunately, the speed at which I was descending quickly flared up my knee injury, and although I missed the rainstorm, my knee was very sore and tired by the time I returned to my camper.
Tumblr media
Beginning of the downwards scramble
I rested and had some lunch in Mount Cook Village before heading back along Lake Pukaki, leaving the magnificent mountain range behind me. I briefly stopped back in Tekapo on my way out, a final attempt to see if any of the local businesses or police had found my camera –with no luck. This solidified my plan for the next day, as I decided to drive into Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island, to buy a replacement DSLR. I promptly booked a night at a Kiwi Holiday Park (looking forward to laundry and a hot shower!) and began the 4 hour drive Northeast to the city.

West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge Jerusalem Township, Lucas County Near Toledo, Ohio West Sister Island is an island of the state of Ohio located in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. The 82 acre island, jointly owned by the United States Coast Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is Ohio's only designated Wilderness Area, the West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the island is covered with trees. Tall hackberry trees make up most of the canopy, with with an understory of poison ivy 12 feet tall on the ground. Polygonatum or Great solomon's seal reaches 7-9 feet in height, and a great variety of ferns, wildflowers, mushrooms, and other plant life can also be found. The island, which is composed of glacial fill over a limestone shelf, is part of the Pelee Archipelago which also includes East Sister Island and Middle Sister Island (both in Ontario, Canada). West Sister Island is roughly 13 miles west of Rattlesnake Island, 14.5 miles east of Turtle Island, and 8.75 miles due north of the Ohio mainland. West Sister Island took its place in history during the War of 1812. This is the area where Commodore Oliver Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. It was after that battle that he sent his famous message to General William Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours." In 1848 a lighthouse was built on the very west end of the island to mark the end of "the South Passage," a water route that threaded its way through Lake Erie's Bass Islands. The lighthouse was built on a stone foundation. The limestone and brick tower rises to a height of 55' and is still an active aid to navigation in the area. The Lighthouse Board report for 1866 noted that the structures on West Sister Island were starting to deteriorate. The requested funds were appropriated in 1867, and the lighthouse itself was refurbished in 1868; that was when a keeper's house was built on the property. A new boathouse was added to the station in 1868. A cistern used to hold rainwater served as the station’s only water supply until 1886, when a well was sunk through granite and water was obtained at a depth of thirty-two feet. A pier, consisting of a ninety-foot-long and sixteen-foot-wide timber crib that was filled with stone and decked over, was built in the fall of 1887, but it was destroyed by floating ice in February 1888. In 1889, a boat harbor was constructed 400 feet east of the tower in the form of an L-shaped pier, but it too was soon damaged by floating ice. Wrought-iron plates were later used to protect the station’s wharves from ice. A circular iron oil house was built atop a concrete foundation on the island and lined with brick in 1890. Prior to this, the oil for the lamp had been stored in the passageway between the tower and dwelling. During Prohibition years, the island was a popular stop used by bootleggers making the run across Lake Erie because the island provided a certain level of visual cover to hide themselves from watching on-shore eyes. When approached by these authorities in those days, the rum-runners would often dump their illegal stash overboard. Legend has it that bottles of prohibition-era alcohol can still be found littered on the bottom of the lake around the island. The lighthouse was automated in 1937 and the island was essentially abandoned by humans. The West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt "as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife...," specifically designated to protect the largest wading bird nesting colony on the U.S. Great Lakes. Ironically, after being established as a wildlife refuge in 1937, the island was used by the United States Army for artillery target practice for dive bombers during World War II. Some remnants are said to remain to this day. Although the wildlife population and the lighthouse were not significantly damaged, the keeper's house was destroyed. It is also reported that fuel tanks jettisoned by dive bombers can still be found on the island. West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge is closed year round; no visitation is allowed. The refuge is managed by the staff of the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge as a wilderness area, as provided under the Federal Wilderness Act. To protect it, public access is permitted for research only. The United States Congress designated the West Sister Island Wilderness in 1975 and it now has a total of 77 acres. All of this wilderness is located in Ohio and is managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. U.S. Fish and Wildlife began a pilot program in 1997 designed to create nesting habitat for black-crowned night herons. As part of the program, about one acre of big trees is cut each season. This allows for re-sprouting and growth, slowly creating a shrub layer for black-crowned heron nests. The refuge, which has a surface area of 80.13 acres, was recognized in 2000 as part of a globally Important Bird Area. The wildlife refuge was featured in a 2007 episode of the Discovery Channel TV series Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. While all access to the island is restricted the West Sister Island lighthouse is visible from the south shore of Lake Erie or from a boat. There are some birdwatching opportunities on boats from a distance. Occasionally the Friends of the Ottawa NWR offers a guided cruise around the island coast for birders. This cruise does not land at the island, but does include researchers who discuss their work with the Island. West Sister Island's rookery is a host for great blue herons, common egrets, black-crowned night herons, and double-crested cormorants. Rock ledges along the island's shore provide sunning spots for many of West Sister's dense snake population. A permit to access the island is granted only for research purposes. Permits are issued by the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and even then, they can access the island only one day per year.

BRAVOUR 2020
The further adventures of a Bravour 2020: this is a further record of the places that we stopped in with my thoughts recollections and impressions of the West Coast of Ireland in 2020. This was the year of the covert 19 and Elisabeth and I were delayed by several months in going out to Ireland to prepare Bravour but got there we did in the end. We arrived in Kilrush after a fairly long and arduous journey by car from London to Pembroke and thence Rosslare with a brief stop in a bed-and-breakfast and then a relaxing drive through Ireland arriving Kilrush in the late afternoon.
Kilrush is a vibrant little place with lots of pubs and good restaurants where you can get a delicious steak and several hardware shops where I could get all the bits for the boat that I wanted. After all the damage that had been done to Bravour at the boatyard in Port Bannatyne I did not give the boat yard any jobs to do over the winter and I found no damage to the boat when I got back what a relief. Just to record some of the damage that had been done to Bravour, although I have to say Port Bannatyne did do quite a lot of good work to Bravour over the years, they smashed the loudspeaker just in front of the wheel house, they left the boom scraping along the top of the wheel house after having taken off the topping lift and removed the backstay from the mainmast which was left flapping. What a dreadful way to leave a boat and on top of that they had managed to break the mountings for the splitter which serves the charging to the batteries. Of course they would not admit to any of this damage and we had to spend nearly £200 buying a new splitter and getting it fitted on. Hence you can see that I did not want any boatyard people on the boat during this winter and also the current winter. Of course this meant that Elisabeth and I had to service the engine which we did very successfully. We were very lucky in having Bravour placed right next to the access ramp which was good for me as I now have difficulty walking very far. This also meant that Elisabeth only had short trips to make in order to unload the car and put all the vittles into the boat, which were quite considerable in quantity and I think made Bravour sit at least an inch or two lower in the water. None of the crew went hungry during this trip. Many bottles of red wine were drunk and copious packets of peanuts. Since last year the marina has become very busy with the existing Marina Park getting good use during the covert 19 lock downs and also a new dinghy club opening in front of the Dolphin Centre which made life quite noisy at times. We were strictly forbidden from keeping the bilge pumps operating which was not good during the winter and I created a system where the bilge water would go into a large plastic tank which Simon, the arina manager had to empty several times during the winter. I think most of this must've been rainwater because there was nothing coming up through the stern gland. Of course we had the problem with the toilet and it was poo in a bag for me as by the time I had got to the toilet the urge would have gone so not very pleasant but at least it kept the water clean for the children. Kyla and Patrick arrived on their due dates and we duly waved goodbye to Elisabeth and set off on our trip. Elisabeth had booked in at a self-catering apartment just north of Galway and had many walking trips in mind. As usual she was our shore contact and we made sure that we sent her a text telling her where we were going and estimated time of arrival and then made sure we contacted her when we safely arrived. This system worked very well. We set off early in the morning around 7:30 to coincide with high tide and had arranged with Simon that the lock would be opened, however nothing happened and we tried to contact many times by mobile without success. We thought this is a good way to start the trip and settled down to wait, then magically at about 20 to eight the gates opened and we went through the lock and exited the marina without any further problems. We had a good run up to Loop Head without getting too seasick and then after rounding Loop Head the engine started to race when we were on a port tack. Usually this means there is an airlock in the system. Usually the engine stops working, however this did not happen, the engine recovered after a few seconds and then kept on going. However the skipper was rather worried.

Eyre Peninsula 4WD Guide [Map Included]
Introduction
South Australia is renowned for its iconic outback regions such as the Flinders Ranges and Simpson Desert. But there is more to SA as it has some spectacular coastal areas such as the Eyre Peninsula which has some of the best camping and coastal scenery anywhere in Australia.
Port Augusta, the gateway to the west and Eyre Peninsula is also the last major centre before heading west.
A great option for an overnight stay is the Fitzgerald Bay area just north of Whyalla. Heading down the east coast there are a number of caravan and camping spots such as Arno Bay Bay and Port Neill that are worth spending a night. Next is Port Lincoln - the major centre of the region.
Port Lincoln – Gateway to the National Parks
Port Lincoln is a good place to stock up with all the major supermarkets represented, plenty of fuel outlets, and even 4WD accessories available if something has been forgotten. The Port Lincoln Tourist Information Centre has all the relevant brochures and information about the nearby national parks, and can book the relevant campsites in the park so this should be our first port of call.
A good tip when planning a trip to this area is to pre-book our stay in Memory Cove and add on a few days at the beginning or end within the Lincoln National. The access key for Memory Cove is collected from the Port Lincoln Tourist Info Centre.
Put some fuel in the 4WD, grab the grocery shopping, and then head to the first National Park in the area which is just out of town – Lincoln National Park.
    Lincoln National Park
The entrance to Lincoln National Park is 11km south of Port Lincoln, so it’s not long until we are away from civilization. Lincoln National Park has more than 10 designated camping areas, most with toilets and fire rings. If travelling outside the fire danger period make sure we bring some wood and choose one of the campsites that allow fires such as September Beach. Some campgrounds (such as Memory Cove) have a year round ban on fires, so make sure the gas cooker is also right to go.
   Stamford Hill
To gain our bearings and take in the scenery, a short hike up Stamford Hill to the Flinders Monument is worthwhile. There are spectacular views across Boston Bay, Port Lincoln and Lincoln National Park. The monument commemorates Matthew Flinders voyage of discovery to this area in 1802. Flinders himself climbed Stamford Hill and named the area Port Lincoln after his native province in England. There are other walks heading off from here – there are more than 20 designated walks in the Lincoln National Park which are detailed in a brochure available from the Port Lincoln Visitors Centre.
 Cape Donington
Cape Donington is the most southern section of Lincoln National Park, and there are great coastline views here. There is a lighthouse at the point, with the sheltered campsites at September Beach campground just around the corner. This campground with its fantastic beach and sheltered campsites with fire pits makes it one of the better camping areas in the Lincoln NP.
This area has an early rural history that includes woodcutting, grazing and guano (seabird manure) mining, and records its first grain crop in 1875. There are reminders of this period in the form of abandoned farm machinery, cleared land and a cottage.
     Memory Cove Wilderness Area
Within the Lincoln National Park is the Memory Cove Wilderness Area. Unlike wilderness protection areas in the eastern states, Memory Cove is open to four wheel drivers and visitors are actively encouraged. It takes a little bit of planning and organising to gain access to this area but this pay up in spades as IMO this is a major highlight of the trip to this area.
Caravan’s and camper trailers are not permitted into Memory Cove so this area is just perfect for slide on campers such as the Trayon.
 Journey into Memory Cove
The access gate to Memory Cove Wilderness area is about 20km from the Park entrance, and its 4WD access only from here. Generally the track is pretty good to start with so 4WD is not immediately necessary, but if you have manual hubs then lock them in ready. From the gate the Memory Cove camping area is 19km, with plenty to see on the way in.
The drive into Memory Cove covers a range of different vegetation. It starts with a fairly dense mix of eucalypt and sheoak woodland consisting of coastal white mallee, tea-tree, and sheoak. It quickly changes to rugged granite and limestone headlands, then more tea-tree and mallee sections.
Early into the drive there is a cliff top section that offers great views out to the nearby islands. The track then heads inland to an open plain commonly stocked with emu’s and kangaroos.
This area was grazed and cropped from 1840 until 1957, with stock watered from springs and soaks from the granite outcrops along the cliff tops. The flat was ploughed by teams of bullocks and harvests of barley were bagged and shipped out from Memory Cove. The last barley was shipped out in 1912 prior to a devastating bushfire.
Further into the drive another side track leads off to a great cliff top view. The open ocean swells crashes on the rocks below, sending salt spray into the air. There is a walking track that follows an old vehicle track around the point that provides great views and is worth checking out.
Just prior to heading down into Memory Cove, there is a scenic lookout that provides spectacular views to Cape Catastrophe, Thistle Island and the bay below. The lookout is known locally as ‘Ivy’s Leap’ after a local tour operators’ vehicle plunged off the cliff here when the handbrake failed. Fortunately no one was in the car at the time.
 Memory Cove
Memory Cove is a shady and sheltered campground just back from the beach. Our campsite had its own track leading the few metres to the brilliant white sands of Memory Cove. We can fish right off the beach here and we managed to catch a nice feed of Salmon one afternoon.
The campground has well-maintained male and female pit toilets that were clean and smell free. There was also a small rainwater tank but don’t rely on this – bring in sufficient water for our stay.
The park contains a variety of wildlife. We saw several Western Grey Kangaroos on the way in, along with Emus and a blue-tongue lizard that had taken up residence in the middle of the track and needed a little prompting to move on. While camped at Memory Cove we saw several large seabirds, pelicans and a lone seal that appeared to be lost.
There is a marked walking track at the right hand end of the beach that leads to the ocean coastline. This is a great place to watch the passing boats, look out to the nearby islands, and throw in a line for a feed of fish. About half way along this track, mobile phone service is possible.
Memory Cove is a great place to relax and unwind. We spent three fantastic days here and really enjoyed this time. Such a spectacular location with limited camping spots & access it is a definite must-do when in the area.
    Sleaford-Wanna 4WD Track
A major highlight of a trip to Lincoln National Park is the scenery and 4WDing along the Sleaford Bay coastline. Massive wind-sculpted sand dunes, pounding surf and spectacular limestone cliffs await the visitor to this area.
   Sleaford-Wanna 4WD Track
There are several beach access points, so if the tide is right a run along the beach could be in order. The access points do vary in difficulty so check before venturing onto the beach.
Quite a lot the Sleaford-Wanna Dunes track consists of narrow sections and vehicles may be coming the other way so caution is needed. Also a sand flag is a good idea to advertise our presence – much easier to spot and be spotted in the narrow parts and when cresting dunes.
 Cape Tournefort
Another excellent 4WD track heads from Wanna out to Cape Tournefort. This track is generally sandy as it meanders through coastal tea-tree and comes out at the cape. From the end of the track there are great views of the nearby Curta Rocks, rugged cliffs and pounding surf onto the beach below.
Coffin Bay
Coffin Bay is a small and picturesque town on the shores of Kellidie Bay. Coffin Bay is famous for its oysters which are sold all over Australia and overseas, and we can pick up some directly from the oyster farmers straight of the boat. The Coffin Bay general store is a good place to pick up any last minute supplies needed, including fuel if required.
Now the bay and area got its name from Matthew Flinders who explored this area in 1802 and named Coffin Bay after his British Navy friend Sir Isaac Coffin.
“The Coffin Bay Township is great but there is a bigger and better attraction right on its doorstep.” – Coffin Bay National Park.
        Coffin Bay National Park
The entrance to the national park is right on the Coffin Bay township boundary. The first 15km is sealed up to Yangie Bay, which is a popular sheltered camping spot which offers some good shade.
From Yangie Bay the rest of the national park is 4WD only. The tight sandy tracks are tailor-made for a slide on camper and the Trayon is the perfect camper for the job.
The first part of the track is sandy but pretty straight-forward with the right tyre pressures. It rounds Yangie Bay then head north adjacent to Port Douglas Bay. There are a couple of salt lakes passed and a few areas of the track that can be flooded by high tides, so there are bypass tracks if the tide is very high. The track then heads inland through coastal bush land, past Lake Damascus and back out to the coast at Black Springs.
  Black Springs
There are some great sheltered campsites and toilets at the Black Springs campground, a great beach below and the nearby Black Springs Well. Also near Black Springs campground is the black rocks walking track which is a 6km hike to the western side of the peninsula.
From Black Springs head across the headland to seven mile beach dropping down onto the beach for great run along the sand. It’s a great drive with lovely beach views, large picturesque dunes, and many seabirds along the foreshore. The beach run is possible near high tide, but it’s much better to time your trip closer to low tide.
Head along the beach to the signposted beach exit and back onto the headland. The scene is now open rocky grasslands almost devoid of vegetation. This area is frequented by emus so keep an eye out for them.
Across the headland there are lots of track options but I would recommend heading first to the most northerly section of the park – Point Sir Isaac.
   Point Sir Isaac
Point Sir Isaac was named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 after his good friend Sir Isaac Coffin.
This a good spot to see whales migrating along the coast towards the head of the Great Australian Bight to mate at the right time of the year.
On the protected eastern side of the point there are several small quiet beaches surrounded by mallee scrub. One such spot is ‘The Pool’ which is a designated campground with toilets, shady campsites, and a few fire pits.
 Mullalong Beach
From Point Sir Isaac it is worth heading to Mullalong Beach which is on the more exposed western coastline. Here there is great coastal scenery consisting of wide beaches, deep blue water, and rocky cliffs. The drive across the headland is also very scenic, with views of the track winding its way across and the blue sea framing the picture.
From Mullalong Beach head out to the most westerly section of the park that you can drive to which is Reef Point Lookout. This is quite a picturesque place, with limestone cliffs, blue waters and extensive reefs joining the beaches.
From Reef Point Lookout continue back inland then southwards to Sensation Beach. Having a name such as Sensation Beach we would expect something pretty special, but actually the place is named after a tuna boat called ‘Sensation’ that drifted ashore here.
 Morgan’s landing
One of the best campsites in the national park is Morgan’s Landing. This is a great sheltered camping area with several spots under shady paperbark trees just back off the beach and Coffin Bay. From the campsite take the short cut along the beach between Morgans Landing and the exit from seven mile beach run.
All the tracks were well signposted and marked so with the Coffin Bay National Park Brochure it is pretty easy to navigate.
  Time to Travel
The National Parks are open all year but the weather can get pretty rough in the winter. The summer time is so popular and the holiday time can see this area quite busy, so I would recommend visit during the autumn or spring season.
 Conclusion
The Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks have plenty to offer the avid camper and 4WDriver.
There are also plenty more attractions on the Eyre Peninsula so you can easily spend a week or more exploring the area. Even though the Eyre Peninsula is a long way away for most of us, it is well worth the effort so load up the 4WD and head down.

This homemade creation was made from a motorcycle front fork, go-kart rear wheels, and a carbon-fiber-wrapped aluminum tank that holds 35 gallons of rainwater at 6000 psi of pressure. Real Issues Reprise - Guest Post
The following was received from Liz Wade in response to the “Real Issues” email....
As most of us know, the better educated we are, the more we can be effective in dealing with the lake's problems.   And.. the more we can do personally.  So let me add to the information shared in the article about septic tanks and erosion:
Several years ago the DNR had to reprimand the dam-control people for cutting off the supply of water coming from our beloved lake and going down to Houghton Lake.  The reason  was that the flow had been cut off to raise the lake level - but before the fish spawned in Houghton.  They spawn in the Cut, and there has to be a sufficient amount of water flowing for them to spawn successfully.  This is an economic factor for our neighbors, and part of the environmental balance.  That water needs to flow.
Many of us have cottages more than 25 years old, some over a century.  Those septic systems are probably not performing well, perhaps not adequately.  Have them tested and inspected to make sure the effluent is not seeping through to the lake.  As you've read, this feeds all kinds of things you don't want to feed and creates some of that smelly stuff you don't want to think about.
Think about that sandy beach you've worked to create in front of your cottage.  How much filtration is that sand providing, or is it actually polluting itself.  There is a reason for greenbelts on the shoreline.  Roots of bushes and plants are searching for nutrients for their own health.  They grab at and ingest those pollutants flowing toward the shore either in ground flowing waters and often just rainwater.  If there is no resistance (plants), that water will carry the pollutants right into our lake and feed that algae and other nasty stuff.  Even the leaves remove air pollutants.
Sea walls are NOT a solution.  Any pollutants that have reached the lake are being pushed around with wave action.  If you have plants on that shoreline, and the natural sandy base, these will often filter out some of those pollutants being carried by the water.  With a sea wall, they can thrive out there, never being caught or removed from lake water.
Stop thinking "well it's not bothering me".  You may think that your precious property (and that is so true, these are expensive riparian lands), doesn't show signs of being affected by erosion, pollution or leaching.  But it is.  All that nasty stuff being ripped off the land a mile away is being distributed in the water right in front of you.  You may not see it as such, but much, if not all, of our shoreline is becoming eutrophic.  (I'm going to include a definition so you know what that word means:  'a lake or other body of water rich in nutrients and so supporting a dense plant population, the decomposition of which kills animal life by depriving it of oxygen.  Higgins, without its increased shoreline population and without dam control was considered one of the most oligotrophic ( relatively low in plant nutrients and containing abundant oxygen in the deeper parts) lakes in the country.  Our author mentioned the shoreline becoming more like wetlands.  I don't think anyone wants to see a reedy, weed-infested shoreline in front of his property.
Don't fertilize.  Did you really come up here to enjoy the lake with a suburban type lawn in front of your cottage?  I don't think so.  You bought that property to enjoy the lake.  The beautiful, crystal clear, uninfested lake.  That fertilizer gets washed right off that lawn into the lake, and guess what?  It fertilizes the algae and the other water plants.  Not good.
One very specific thing you can do - support the plan to utilize the sewer system at the northwest corner of the lake - adding on the north state park and taking all that pollution away from drainage into Higgins.  The capability is there and it can only be good in its results.
Always, always ask yourself whether your actions fit into the National Park ethos.  Leave only footprints.  Leave our lake for the next generations.  You can save it.
