Akane-Banashi: Writing women protagonists using Battle Shounen tropes
Tumblr media
The tropes of shounen are familiar to most anime audiences, with this boys’ demographic being wildly popular and its works often held up as the “canon” works of anime and manga. Like any genre of fiction, it has its own codes and conventions: a cheerful, outspoken protagonist, an overwhelmingly male ensemble cast, a training arc, a tournament featuring similarly-minded deuteragonists, mentors with specific expertise, and familial legacies to contend with. Like any collection of tropes, they can also be utilized in service of a story outside of that genre—and in stories that don’t necessarily center on male heroes. Akane-Banashi, a manga about a young woman coming into prominence in the world of Rakugo, has one of the farthest possible premises from the shounen standard, and yet it uses the tropes of shounen effectively to convey the emotional stakes of the story.

Episode 10, Misty Hollow
Taku Yashiro, who is going to voice Spitz Feier in the upcoming “Ron Kamonohashi: The Forbidden Detective,” is the voice of Tsugaru Shinuchi, the Oni slayer and a third of the Birdcage Users. A Pash + article recounted his distinct style of voicing the Onigoroshi. It is so different from his past (and ongoing) works (“Raven of the Inner Palace” or on “Horimiya”).
He said the way Tsugaru speaks is called “Beranme tone.” It is the language of the Tokyoite working class, which is similar to the Cockney accent of East London.
I recorded it while discussing with the sound director Wakabayashi (Kazuhiro). … There is a real rakugo in the work, so I heard the same story of various people. Then I also checked things like how to use words that can be heard in the old sound source.
Basically, Taku was also inspired by the classic Edo-rakugo. This type of theater performance can be likened to stand-up comedy of the West. We know Noh and Kabuki, but rakugo is not so well-known.
In rakugo, the performer sits on a cushion on stage and tells a funny story to the audience by using minimal props, namely a fan and a tenugui. The origins of this art form can be traced to the mid-Edo period (1603-1868), and by the end of 1700s, there were regular rakugo performances attended by ordinary people at venues in Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Classic Edo-rakugo is told in sharp downtown Tokyo dialect called beranme (pronounced like bay-run-may).”

During Episode 9, Tsugaru imagined himself doing the rakugo.

to be born and murdered by art: is there anywhere to go if not to the stage?
like the ones who were privileged enough to hear sukeroku, with flesh and bones, tell a story we, as the audience, were privileged enough to experience a long old tale of rakugo being born.
Tumblr media
you and a rakugo artist, facing each other in a room completely devoted from an audience. there, he tells a story about the day he met the god of death and how he killed him, years later. his candle, still glowing, takes a form of a woman from time to time. what is he hiding?
Tumblr media
showa genroku rakugo shinju not only tells a story about the beauty of an old art, but how human experience and relationships are bound to be laced from here to eternity. solitude, even as a childhood dream, would not be fair to the ones who made your story worth reading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s about passion and life, never letting the flame go out. it’s about making past transforms itself in future, about the burden left to the ones who cary an old name. about humans impacting humans and changing their lives drastically, like it or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
because what is tradition without it shares of tragedy? what is happiness to the one who only experienced grief? what is letting go of something that makes you whole? what is love to those unworthy of it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sgrs not only teach us about rakugo: it is raguko on itself. a story to cry and laugh of, to sit in the same room over and over again just because you found your favorite voice. it’s about finding our own rakugo, even if we could barely tell a story on our own.

Akane Banashi: Chapter 61
Alright, this chapter was super cute, with Akane going around with her colleagues, asking about her father and his style of Rakugo.
Tumblr media
Shinta Arakawa’s a tragic figure in this series, as Akane is driven to figure out what went wrong when he pursued his dream. However, the expelled rakugoka is not the Shinta Akane wants to understand, it’s the passionate young man who had already grabbed hold of that dream. And that’s exactly who she gets to meet.
Tumblr media
My favorite thing about this particular chapter is the structure, starting with a page of introduction, then a montage of single panels showing each response, then a drawn out sequence with Akane’s mother, culminating in the excellent page above.
This also brings us to Akane’s nin solidified:

We skip ahead a few weeks, and it’s time for the competition next chapter. Goddam was this one good.

I was so happy to find a complete, subtitled version of the rakugo story Shinigami!!! It's one of my favorite stories! Rakugo is so fun, but finding anything translated is difficult.

any entertainment you enjoy living in Japan?
Hm... well, I had fun at amusement parks, ate a bunch in maid cafes, tried my luck in gachas...
Oh, and I tried getting into Rakugo. Mostly because Kiyo-kun is into that.

Hiii Seb!! <3 I'm sorry if this is a weird question, but do you know any sites or Yt channels where I can watch Rakugo legally? I started reading Akane banashi cuz of your blog and now I want to listen to irl rakugo, but I couldn't find anything besides what seems like illegal uploads😢
anyways luv luv luv ur blog bye!!
🥺🥺🥺
Anon Omg I have felt a similar struggle….here are a few official sources I’ve found!!
In 2020, JAPAN Forward recorded livestreams of rakugo performances in an event to promote socially-distanced entertainment during lockdown. These are available on Youtube!
This is a performance of “Shinigami” (which is one of my personal fave stories) released on the YouTube channel of the entertainment company Watanabe. They might have more but idk.
Greeks is an company based in Osaka that has released a few performances with English subtitles on YouTube. Here’s a performance of Three Written Vows and Enemy at the Inn.
Tatekawa Shinoharu is a rakugoka who releases recordings both in Japanese and English on his own YouTube channel.
I hope this was helpful!!! It makes me so happy to know my ramblings have helped people find akane banashi😭😭😭😭
