Thinking about Hawkeye telling Charles "you're alright," in Major Ego, Hawkeye realizing Charles was screwing with Flagg in Rally 'Round the Flagg, Boys, Hawkeye seeing the caring, human side of Charles in Sons and Bowlers. This says something about Hawkeye, who sees the humanity in people, because that's who he is. But Hawkeye is also the person who calls Charles out for seemingly lacking that humanity in The Light That Failed and I'm having incomplete thoughts about Hawkeye's role in Charles's character development.

It's not that Charles never touches people
He pats Hawkeye on the knee when he's being condescending in Fallen Idol, he briefly touches Hawkeye's arm when he says “Why are you so unfeeling about my feelings?” in The Light That Failed, he attempts to help Margaret off the jeep in Comrades in Arms but BJ gets there first
In Dear Sis when he opens the toboggan cap he pats Radar's cheek, pats Mulcahy on the back then puts his hands on Mulcahy's shoulders
Kisses Margaret's hair while pretending to comfort her over a prank he's pretending he didn't take part in (An Eye for a Tooth), puts his hand on Colonel Baldwin's shoulder before he says “I have groveled”  nevermind I watched the scene again and he’s touching the wall
A quick touch to Klinger's arm in Potter's office in the beginning of They Call the Wind Korea, yet in the next episode (Major Ego) Klinger pats his shoulder and Charles says “Never touch me again” (really, Klinger ought to have smacked him)
He likes to nudge people forward – the reporter in Major Ego, Hawkeye in Bombshells, BJ in Bless You, Hawkeye, Kellye in Too Many Cooks although that last one might be merely a gesture and not a touch, he also dances with Kellye in That's Show Biz
In The Party he touches Klinger's back during one of the attempts to set a date and he pats Radar at the end, he also pats Radar in Rally Round the Flagg, Boys. In Ain't Love Grand he only touches Sooni a little but he puts his hands on Klinger's shoulders. He touches Lt. Park (Guerrilla My Dreams) on the shoulder and the Congressional Aide in Are You Now, Margaret
He gives Hawkeye a little nudge in Yessir, That's Our Baby and he grabs his wrist when they're arguing in Follies of the Living. Despite the emotional intimacy of Sons and Bowlers the only touching in that episode is Hawkeye giving him that shoulder nudge during the bowling game, which he also does in The Young and the Restless. (The blocking in Sons and Bowlers is a topic for another post, I think). Then we have the hug in Temporary Duty, drunk!Charles taking him by the hand in Peace on Us, and falling on him in Settling Debts and Follies.
In the finale he kisses Margaret's hand and obviously we see him kiss Martine and Donna. And Donna says something interesting. “The whole thing was your idea from the beginning. You kept walking around saying 'I can't keep my hands off this angel. Somebody marry us before it's too late.' Mako Nakamura married us just to shut you up.” The implication is that if he were sober he wouldn't have any trouble keeping his hands off her, since he isn't he's not only having trouble, he's recognizing it's wrong and annoying the whole party with it.
I think it's safe to say people touch him more than the other way around – see Margaret's lip peck in Say No More, this bit with Hawk in Foreign Affairs, etc.

mash asks (pt. 2)
oh my god ally set me up for an essay why don't you??
27. which era is your favorite? hawkeye/trapper/frank, hawkeye/bj/frank, or hawkeye/bj/charles? hawk/bj/frank! i'm a huge charles girlie, but something about frank's atrociousness in the mix is particularly entertaining. and there's conflict! constantly!
28. which is your comfort episode? maybe not your favorite episode, but an episode you watch to feel happy? all of the obvious ones, i think: movie tonight, eye for a tooth, april fools, springtime.
32. they make a lot of references to popular media back then, do you have a favorite? if you don’t know/aren’t familiar with them, any favorite impersonations that they do? i love a lot of them mainly because i'm in love with myrna loy but my favorite is a one-off, minor reference somewhere in s6 that hawkeye makes to the song 'two sleepy people' which happens to be one of my favorite songs ever
39. if you could pick one character/patient that died to live instead, who would you pick? (excluding henry come on guys 🙄) i'm going to go a little wild card here and say the last musician in gfa every iota of my heart is saying tommy gillis but he has to die! he's doomed by the narrative and hawkeye doesn't become hawkeye without losing tommy right there on the table!!! to leave charles with some shred of hope and long-term recognition of the self through the other
48. what episode are you showing to your friend as a first impression to get them into mash? (pilot barred) okay i'm going to give three: hepatitis, rally round the flagg boys, and no sweat
50. what’s an episode that everyone seems to love but you don’t really like? alternatively, which episode do you think needs all the love? i really can't get into point of view or goodbye radar, although believe me, i've tried. i think that point of view just seems like the weakest of all of the non-traditional episodes (all of which i love a whole bunch) and the writing in goodbye radar doesn't hold up to me. now alcoholics anonymous!! that's an episode! dare i say THE episode!!!
52. wildcard again! poster can pick whichever question they want to answer!! >>> 30. do you have any lines you find yourself quoting in real life? "butt out, this is man talk" STAYS in my daily vocabulary because gender is funny i'm sorry

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S7
Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?
Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.
— — —
Season 7! An exceedingly sweet one, I'd say. Not as throw-back rambunctious as the previous season, but just real cutie.
Am also really getting the sensation at this point that our moorings have become entirely loosened from time. We're just, floating, slowly revolving in place, the only indication of the outside years the silvering of Alan Alda’s hair. In the fourth episode of this season it’s stated to be October, 1952, and then seven episodes after that it’s September, 1951. Later we celebrate the one year anniversary of the Officer's Club we built five seasons ago and also next year. When are we? We're in M*A*S*H.
Oh and BJ has a mustache now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gee-whiskers.
M*A*S*H - Season 7 Recommended sequence
7x03 ‘Lil’ - A very fun older lady colonel comes to the 4077th and bonds with Sherman, but the real ticket is that Hawkeye realizes he truly does not know what the “BJ” stands for, and I realize that Radar is HR. Weeping, why is that…so funny…. The standard level is noticeably lower ever since we entered Season 4, for sure, but that's also why we privilege this one for being the flirtiest, gayest episode this season by a mile, including even Margaret and Lil herself.
7x07 ‘None Like It Hot’ - They Were All So HOT, and the boys order a camping tub from Abercrombie & Fitch. Everyone wants in. You want in. Get in here.
7x11 ‘Point of View’ - Brand-new experimental swing for M*A*S*H, and I’M LIVING. For this whole episode, we’re only seeing what a soldier is seeing. They’ve just set up a camera guy on a cot, and we watch our characters coming in and out of his frame of sight, talking to him, talking to each other at a distance, occasionally just being observed without their knowing. It’s again doing part of what S4’s ‘The Interview’ does, but organically: showing these people we know so well from an outside perspective. It’s incredibly revealing. I was in love with it. Episodic television!!
7x14 ‘An Eye for a Tooth’ - Margaret is in adorable high spirits as her divorce from Donald gets ever closer, and in her charming joie de vivre gets roped into an escalating prank war with her hungover besties Hawkeye and BJ, and the surprise scamp of the hour: Charles, chaos vampire.
7x10 ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ - When I saw this title I just chuckled “Bring me it,” like a king gesturing to a plate of figs. And They Were ALL SO COLD. Blanket cloaks, a ~stunning~ new Winchester parka, everyone with their shoulders hunched up going “Hhha!”, and a couple wonderfully strange and macabre plot points in the cold night that I don’t know, just perfectly deliver a type of atmosphere that enchants me.
7x13 ‘Out of Gas’ - They’re still All So Cold, getting lightheaded from being stuck using ether in the O.R., and Father Mulcahy is on the black market again: rules.
7x20 ‘Hot Lips Is Back In Town’ - Do not let the title mislead you, this is an episode about Major Margaret Houlihan, hilarious, gung-ho, magnificent, being single and ready to revolutionize triage.
7x21 ‘C*A*V*E’ - Now for some reason this title just absolutely sends me. I can't even figure out how I'm pronouncing it in my head except that maybe it's sort of like Tim Curry saying “SpaACE!” Anyway this episode fucks, they evacuate everyone to a cave amid shelling and Hawkeye, rolling his weight from foot to foot at the entrance while his body tries to suffocate him, is like, so, time to reveal I have severe claustrophobia? Hell yeah it is.
7x22 ‘Rally Round the Flagg, Boys’ - Flagg returns, popping out in literal jump scares to people’s literal shouts, truly great, and that’s even before we get to see what happens when you toss him at Charles Emerson Winchester, encountering him for the first time. Sherm directed this one :)
7x23 ‘Preventative Medicine’ - In this season's only dark ep, but oh baby, Hawkeye, with an eerie, damned air, sets out to commit medical malpractice. Run don’t walk: to the trolley problem episode. Run. Don’t. Walk.
7x25 ‘Ain’t Love Grand’ - In this episode, Klinger addresses the fact that he’s wearing a Class A uniform by grinning that he has “a little rendezvous later and we promised each other to dress in something kinky,” and I about lost my glass. Also, Mike Farrell, director of this one, uses his first outing to announce that he conceives of Hawkeye as this cute terrible gremlin who lives to torment him in...ways.
7x26 ‘The Party’ - Sunshiny social engineer BJ Hunnicutt gets it in his tall head that their loved ones should have a party together back in the states, for the connection and comfort that will bring both them and the 4077th. This one had me, as the books say, blubbering. So dear & sweet I could expire !
And that's your set. For the die-hards, full season-long notes as usual coming soon.
Season 1 • Season 2 • Season 3 • Season 4 • Season 5 • Season 6 • Season 7 • To be continued

REQUESTS AND FILLS
HOW IT WORKS
As another fun way to engage with the M*A*S*H writing community, we will be accepting fic requests!
Anyone can make a request. You can do so through the askbox or private messages. We will then add it to the request list, which is under the read more.
If you wish to fill a request, notify us and we will indicate on the list that the request has been filled. Each request can only be filled ONCE. Things will work on a first come, first served basis. However, this doesn't mean you can't take inspiration from the idea if you want!
We encourage anyone who requests a fic to try and fill at least one other request. However, we understand that not every request can be filled, and there is no pressure to either!
REQUEST LIST
Write about privacy. The lack of it in a place without hard walls. The difficulty in achieving it in the latrine, the showers, your bed, anywhere. Even those who sleep alone - Margaret, for example - can't maintain any sense of genuine privacy. The clerk sleeps indoors, behind a door, and they're always at the ready for the phone. They're cut off from the world, except when they're not, and they're never cut off from each other. It's get used to it or go mad - and the flip side of not having privacy is guarding secrets closely, because there's nothing else. from @cosmictuesdays
"Where are you going to sleep tonight?" "In a bed." from @cosmictuesdays

someone gets bridal/princess carried for any reason. injury, asleep, for the bit, just because. from anonymous [FILLED]
Takes place after Rally ‘Round the Flagg, Boys where a vengeful and completely unhinged Colonel Flagg returns to get his revenge on Charles for outsmarting him. Only to get outsmarted by him again. from anonymous

Updated recommendation of mash episodes to watch for people who don’t want to go through the whole thing. I recommend all of them bc I am going for the general tone of the show and characters but will mark the ones that get mentioned later as plot relevant with a *
This goes out to an anon who asked me which episodes to watch over a year ago when I had barely watched any myself. Now I’ve seen it all and can answer honestly.
Also note the show has a lot of goofy A plot serious B plot so try and stick the episodes out in case you aren’t seeing the relevant one.

Complete Guide to M*A*S*H Episodes Written and Directed by Cast Members
Some of these episodes feature co-writers or co-directors. I also did not make the distinction between written by, story by, and teleplay by credits, because the purpose of this list is to find episodes cast members were involved in behind the scenes. I may later update this post to include that information, but it is all available on imdb.
Written by Mike Farrell The Yalu Brick Road Run for the Money
Directed by Mike Farrell Ain't Love Grand Heal Thyself Strange Bedfellows
