L’amico, così come l’innamorato, non si aspetta di veder ricompensati i suoi sentimenti. Non esige contropartite per i suoi servizi, non considera la persona eletta come una creatura fantastica, conosce i suoi difetti e l’accetta così com’è, con tutto ciò che ne consegue. Questo sarebbe l’ideale. E in effetti: vale forse la pena di vivere, di essere uomini, senza un ideale come questo? E se un amico ci delude perché non è un vero amico, possiamo forse metterlo sotto accusa, rinfacciandogli il suo carattere, la sua debolezza? Quanto vale un’amicizia in cui apprezziamo l’altro per le sue virtù, per la sua fedeltà, la sua perseveranza? Quanto vale un’amicizia che ambisca a essere premiata? Non abbiamo forse il dovere di accettare l’amico infedele esattamente come quello fedele e pieno di abnegazione? Non è forse questo il contenuto più autentico di ogni relazione umana, un altruismo che dall’altro non esige nulla e non si aspetta nulla, assolutamente nulla?
