i think there is a new special kind of hell for me (has to know the exact way a character's name is spelled) due to the horrors (the complications of kanji)

fantasy! and sci fi and speculative fiction in general. I love the escapism and the creativity of the genres

11. what non-fiction books do you like if any?

I haven't read a non-fiction book that didn't have to do with my dissertation since I started my dissertation 💀 my brain is still a little fried. I think tales from the haunted south by tiya miles is a great book for anyone interested in ghost tours. I'm also trying to build up a little professional library and first on my list is queering the museum

18. do you like historical books? which time period?

okay so I've got a lot of conflicting thoughts about historical fiction in general. some writers will do enormous amounts of research and create really beautiful narratives with it, some people just throw pop culture knowledge at the wall and claim it's accurate. then there's the book I had to read in undergrad about a village in england during the black death that was literally entirely historically accurate, nothing happened that couldn't be 100% confirmed on historical record, and that was a terrible book (but at least partially because the historian writing it wasn't good at writing prose!).

shows like bridgerton (sorry to use a show as an example in a book ask) doesn't bother me at all because no one expects accuracy out of bridgerton even though it's set in a real historical period. then you've got game of thrones/asoiaf, which is fantasy, but markets itself as being accurate to the medieval period when it's not lmao and people do take it as historical fact even though it's set in a fantasy world! or like, there's this really well-known novel in australia called the secret river. to add a little more context, there was some very high profile debates between historians in the 90s/00s about the nature of the colonisation of australia: the (accurate) view that it was an invasion and involved massacres and dispossession of land and genocide, and the view that it was all good actually. some of these debates happened on live television, like really high profile; I got taught about it in high school. the author of the secret river once talked about how as a fiction author she could "be above the fray" looking down on these "polarised positions" and end the history wars by seeing the truth of it as a novelist and like no??? a novel, regardless of intent, can't get the magnitude or scale of 150 years of conflict across. henry reynolds was not a polarised position he was right god dammit!! representing your historical fiction as "the truth" when you haven't done enough research to realise that windschuttle is a fucking hack is just flat out wrong. (if anyone curious would like to learn more about the australian frontier wars, frontier war stories is a good podcast! some of the interviewees were actually active participants in the history wars)

but you know, while some historical fiction can really bug me, I've also loved a lot of historical fiction novels too. I don't have a specific time period. one of my favourite books, she who became the sun, is historical fiction (historical fantasy? because of the ghosts?) and I've got books on my shelves from periods ranging from ancient greece to 1920s china. it's all a matter of how it's done I guess

I think this is a very wholesome way to show love for fics, so while I don’t usually do tagging things (I love to do them but can never do them on mobile and since I use this site almost exclusively on mobile, I always end up never doing the tag games 😅), I would love to do this one right here and now! In no particular order: Unapologetic, by glim (Merlin, ship: merthur // one of my favourite, go-to, feel-good fics! my favourite is the way merls asks arthur out ♡) We Are All Diamonds, by Footloose (Merlin, ship: merthur // one of my all-times because it’s such an exciting story and it hits you in the feels and arthur is deaf and kick-ass and merlin is hurting but pure and i’m a sucker for stories that take place in canada and this one takes place in toronto haha) A Beary Happy Story, by platonic_boner (Merlin, ship: merthur // another go-to feel-good! merlin’s names for the stuffed animals had me cracking up out loud) M-RYS, by mornmeril (Merlin, ship: merthur // the first fic that really opened my eyes to just how GOOD fic writers can be ‘cuz like daaaaamn that world-building and that plot hit me in all the right places, especially seeing as how i am also a sucker for sci-fi revolution dystopias with a magic twist) The One Where Their (Mother) Tongues Get Acquainted, by emjayelle (Merlin, ship: merthur // yet another go-to feel-good! and it takes place in quebec where i hardcore relate to ontario!arthur’s french problems haha XD it’s sweet and good and i read it a million times when i was doing my french exchange in quebec and a million more before then, and my fave is definitely when arthur explains how he came out to his dad) Crossing the Line, by ultra-geek (Merlin, ship: gen // one of the first merlin fandom fics i ever read, and the first bamf!merlin fic i ever read! it’s hilarious and awesome and lancelot is not that subtle and just, poor leon XD) Arthur Pendragon Is Many Things, by nomical (Merlin, ship: merthur // another one of my all-times! i thoroughly enjoy everything about this fic, and it never fails to make me laugh) The Eleventh Hour, by Bellobelle (Merlin, ship: merthur // i have yet to find a piece of writing that can make my cry in less words than this one–it’s 6k and it made me sad for MONTHS after i first read it, and it still makes my heart break thinking about it now, almost three years later) The Only Moment We Were Alone, by emmbrancsxx0 (Merlin, ship: merthur // this still remains one of the saddest things i’ve ever read, and it still hurts to think about it, and it took me a full year to recover, and to have the ability to listen to the songs on the author’s fic playlist without wanting to cry l o l) A Portrait of Kevin Price as a Young Mormon, by neverbirds (Book of Mormon, ship: mcpriceley // i saw bom recently and fell in love, and i am mentioning this fic because i finished reading it two weeks ago but it’s still open on my devices and i still occasionally peruse it because it was just that good) These are ten awesome fics, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Σ(ﾟДﾟ；): Have they ever sprained or broken their leg before? How about their arm? What was the story behind it?

I’m not sure if this meme also covers losing an entire limb –– but I think that, either way, that’s a story for a different day.

I’ll also spare you the countless sprains, cracks and tears as they’re quite frankly too large in number, as well as minor breaks like fingers, and only recount some more serious fractures of, as the meme dictates, arms and legs.

There are, for example, several faded surgery scars on his left arm and shoulder as the result of several fractures –– a parting gift from his time with the Rangers, acquired only shortly after the start of the war in Afghanistan. The doctors initially deemed it to be a career-ending injury, maybe with a bit of good will trying to offer him a way out of the army –– except he didn’t want that, let his spite for them fuel his recovery, and topped it off by trying for special forces soon after. (They never did him any wrong, he simply perceived it that way.)

Raphael sometimes vaguely remembers breaking something as a child, possibly an arm, but he’s not sure. If it was an arm, he couldn’t tell which one.

He also has broken both of his legs before, his left one having been the more serious case, as he quite literally snapped it in half against someone’s shoulder –– a kick that was just a tad misplaced, but mostly because the bones had already been weakened beforehand. He made it out alive, partly due to the fact that the situation was absurd enough that his opponent for a moment thought it had been his bones he’d just heard crack.Though at least that incident was justifiable, unlike the time he broke his right fibula for, as he himself put it, ‘no reason at all’. He will, to this day, claim it simply snapped in the middle of his evening run –– but more likely is that it was, again, cracked before and simply gave under the continuous impacts. Therefore both of these times are effectively owed to his inability to distinguish a fracture from ‘just a bruise’ (apparently in both appearance and perceived pain), as well as his unwillingness to consult a medic.In short, it was his own damn fault both times.

Hey, serious question, what sort of ending is Mysterious Lotus Casebook? Because I'm on episode 13 and if it's another open ending, bittersweet ending, I'm going to SCREAM.

Anyway, Fang Duobing not being able to connect the dots continues to be hilarious while Di Feicheng and Li Lianhua carry on the entire angst resources of this world.

This is fun. It's not going to make me go insane at all. Nope. Just fun detective stories. Nothing more. No overly traumatized characters making continuous bad decisions and trying to convince themselves they're alright while a figurative golden puppy runs after them completely confused and getting equally traumatized little by little. Ha ha, no, nope. *through clenched teeth* Just fun, silly detective stories.

and yes! maybe maia never turned into a werewolf in twi since there is a considerably smaller amount of downworlders (and i figure werewolves specifically wouldn't last very long as they're not immortal and eventually would die out, you know? i mean sure they could turn new people but most wouldn't want to, so) and rapha is a vampire (daylighter somehow?) and since the downworlders are trying to live covertly... maybe he lives with magnus, instead of the clan, or they just keep close and rapha works for him. as his secretary or something? jdhdj

anyway yes she's a marine biologist and she's great at it and is living all her dreams and just generally being so happy? she loves what she does and she's well on her way to graduating and already has a job at an NGO maybe? to save wildlife? that does sound right up her alley

she probably meets raphael through becoming friends with simon, then magnus, then raphael. (or maybe simon and raphael become friends once they meet in twi? i mean it's a matter of time once alec and magnus start dating and there's no politics drama so they can skip that and go straight to the part where they get along lmao)

maybe she's waiting for magnus to finish up with his last client and raphael is bored with not a lot to do, really, but he gets to help his best friend/father figure and earn some money, so he's not complaining. and they are just chatting while maia waits - she mentions that she never believed in magic really but magnus is scaringly good and raphael immediately smiles in pride and is like "yeah, he has that effect on people"

and obviously there's all that pride and affection in his eyes and she... asks about it and raphael just shrugs like "magnus is family", maybe even looks down a little bit, twisting with his ace? ring and murmuring something like "even after i didnt think id have one again" and somehow maia is opening up about how her parents didn't accept her once she came out, either, but she has found a family in Simon and Bat and her other friends, so she gets it

she mentions having been a bartender and they talk working with the public and what hell it is, sometimes even finding themselves saying the same thing at the same time about some particularly wack story about a customer. raphael is like "god, i dont know how you do it, i don't know if i could handle drunk customers" and she says that the trick is to get yourself some tequila too and he laughs and damn, it's been a while

it's lonely, being a downworlder in twi. there are no communities left. he has his little family of warlocks, but... it's still lonely. especially when magnus hadn't really been at his best, lately

at some point magnus walks out and sees them talking and laughing and he just sort of. retreats again because his boy is smiling and he certainly doesn't want to disrupt the moment. he knows he needs some new friends, especially ones who aren't centuries old. raphael is still young, after all

anyway! they become friends, and soon raphael is hanging out with her and simon and bat, and it's really nice? and they hit it off so well and maia is so passionate about her work and rapha had forgotten what that was like, that passion, and she's just... so bright and knows so much and explains marine ecology to him in vivid detail and he gets it even though he doesn't have any previous knowledge? you know? she's just That Good. and more often than not they find themselves talking, maia excitedly rambling about animals and the marine ecosystem and her work to help keep oceanic preservation, and he's just listening and smiling and telling her how admirable she is, and she smiles a little privately and thanks the gods that her light little blush doesn't show

anyway she inspires rapha to go out there and he goes back to doing volunteer work too? so he finds a soup kitchen as cooking is still his passion, and it's nice and he's happy and making friends and feeling a little less detached from the outside/mundane world. and it's so good. and he supports maia so much and makes sure that she always eats and rests and manages to keep her scholarship, and aaaaaa i just love them

anyway eventually raphael tells her that he's in love with her, YES basking in the sun (im picturing in a pier rather than a beach? idk why) and she smiles and he kisses her cheek all slowly and softly 🥺

Rapha’li snapped his head up from his latest stack of papers, scrubbing a hand over his face. Blink-blink-blink of his eyes to chase of sleep. He was awake! He swore. He… mmrgh.

…Damn it all. He’d nodded off again.

All right. More stimulants next time.

A bleary lilac gaze turned toward Orrin, the glasses lopsided on his face and the scholar quietly squinting at the man in question. It took until then to realize there was something on his shoulder; Rapha’li followed the trail of Orrin’s arm down to what, predictably, turned out to be a hand… then back up to his face again, the scent of baozi only then registering in the air. That caught his attention; navy ears swished promptly upward to a point, and the sleepyhead couldn’t help himself giving the tasty smell a hearty sniff.

“Orrin–! Are those– oh, gods. Orrin, buddy, you’re a hero,” Rapha’li exclaimed, snatching up the delicious plate of baozi and cramming one of them into his face, heedless of how hot it was. A cloud of steam escaped the scholar as he rambled with his mouth full, snarfing gleefully like a starved half-mad animal. 

“Mmphuggin herroh,” asserted Rapha one more time, delighted. The sad little two-plate stack on the corner of the table was empty and dry and crusted, and likely hadn’t seen food in approximately an Astral Era or two.
