I just found out about a really interesting project from photographer Drew Gardner. He photographs the descendants of famous historical figures dressed as their ancestors.
He currently is working on photographing African Americans dressed as their ancestors who were photographed during the American Civil War, both the famous and the ordinary.
Here's a video on recreating Harriet Tubman's portrait:

In digging into my old notes, I came across this gem on Grelle. Not sure if it already got covered by someone else, but if I forgot about it, maybe others have as well. I think I have discovered Grelle’s actual origin in real life!  I was watching a documentary called “Decline of British Dukedom:  The Last Dukes” from Real Royalty on YouTube.  It brought up a duchy created from the bastard child of King Louis and “Nell Gwyn” a famous stage actress of the time.  She has red hair, dresses in red, with a salty tongue, who was one of the first actual FEMALE actresses and did cross-dressing roles!  (Just gender flip and we have Grell.  Even the name “Grell” is a blend of Gwynn and Nell).  Nell is short for Eleanor.  Gwyn was spelled Gwyn, Gwynn, or even Gwynne. @abybweisse @shinigami-mistress @tirnelsutcliff

Christmas Seasons During the Voyage Canon (as of draft 0.4)
I thought I did a proper post on Christmas during the time of Devil's Eye but apparently I have not. I'll get to work on that later. I also may revise my other historical context posts with some actual citations so they aren't just aimless ramblings without any evidence. But that's for later.
In the canon story of Devil's Eye, the adventure lasts about 7 years. That's 7 Christmases to celebrate in different parts of the world each time! So where do they align? As of our current draft they're thus:
Tumblr media
December 1721 takes place in France, specifically in Paris. The focus is exclusively on the Barracuda's crew, who just weeks earlier lost their titular ship to an attack by La Demonia in the port of Le Havre, and forced them to escape inland by the Seine River. Losing the trail of the Sins, they realize they're without shelter or money in the city of Paris, and the story arc focuses on their collaborative efforts to stay alive during the particularly harsh winter of northern France during the Little Ice Age. This is the point where the story sheds its pretenses of being just a seafaring adventure, as the survival of the characters depends greatly on their ability to adapt to circumstances going beyond their control.
Tumblr media
December 1722 takes place across Northern Italy, most likely between Turin and Milan. Having spent the previous spring traveling across southern France, the summer across Spain, and the autumn across central Italy, the Barracuda crew have located and been pursuing the Spanish branch of the Montego family, distant descendants of Saint Emilio, for one of the Keys to the Eye is in their possession. Finally they confront the family in the winter, but they are seen only as stalking thieves and are not given the key. In response, Ravyn commands her crew to take it by force, which is done begrudgingly. It's a sour note that welcomes the new year, and shows our heroes aren't necessarily just.
Tumblr media
December 1723 takes place in the Ottoman Levant, between the cities of Antioch and Damascus. Unlike the previous two winters, this time Christmas happens to land upon incidental stops along the way to a more important destination: Jerusalem. There is little time for merriment or mirth among any of the practicing members of the Barracuda crew, as the journey between Antioch and Damascus takes almost the whole month, and then the journey from Damascus to Jerusalem takes nearly another, and the time spent in between is dedicated entirely to resting and resupplying. All the while, their continued persistence at this venture has finally caught the attention of the Master, who now plans to play his hand directly against them.
Tumblr media
December 1724 takes place in the Barbary Coast in the cities of Tripoli and Alexandria. Having been driven into the Sahara and hidden among the trade caravans over the past year, the Barracuda crew slowly rebuild their assets to try and resume the voyage again. Meanwhile, the oldest Heyder child, Helen, was taken captive by the Sins and made their hostage. In the city of Tripoli, the crew hijacks a new ship, the Arabian Xebec known as the Zumurruda. They then turn towards Alexandria to rescue Helen, and encounter La Demonia there. A battle breaks out, and the two forces welcome the new year with renewed conflict.
Tumblr media
December 1725 brings the adventure to Ottoman Arabia and the city of Jeddah, the home of Amir. By this point a lot has changed in the past year: two more ships have joined the cause, the navy frigate HMS Cavalier and the Dutch smuggling fluyt Diantha. As well, the Sins of La Demonia have entered an uneasy alliance with the heroes, deciding to seek the Keys to the Eye together so that the Master can be stopped from obtaining his prize, even at the cost of their own souls. As for Jeddah itself, Amir is forced to reconcile with the choices he made decades ago to abandon his family in search for adventure, something that some crewmates are supportive of and others find a distraction from the greater objective.
Tumblr media
December 1726 brings the voyage to the place that holds painful memories for almost everyone involved: the port of Guangzhou in China. Having raided it 15 years prior, the Sins are still wracked with guilt over what they had done, and among the heroes, Ravyn's foster father, Mortimer Hurley, died protecting his crew from the Master. The uneasy alliance nearly breaks apart as the tensions between past and present begin to boil over before plans can even be made to search for the final key of Saint Emilio, especially when the local Black Dog Bandits learn of the arrival of the Black Ship with Red Sails, and seek to avenge those who died as well.
Tumblr media
December 1727 is the last winter of the voyage, and is when the crews year-long efforts in China finally result in them finding the final key of Saint Emilio, which has been guarded on Mount Song in the central China plain. With all seven keys in tow, the collective crews share a brief respite of relaxation before they make preparations to claim the Eye and defeat the Master forever.

Hello, tysm for your work translating DoD! I have a question about chapter 68 - when Suleiman says Hurrem sent him poems again in the letter, he comments that she's "much better at this than me." Do you know if "this" is referring to Hurrem being better at composing poems than him, Hurrem being more consistent about sending him poems than he is with her, or something else? Thanks!
Hi anon. Sorry for the late response (because work has been killing me).
When he says that in chapter 68, he means that she's a better poet than him. Actually, Suleiman dabbled in poetry himself and has his own diwan. That's really cool. The Latinized version of his diwan can be found here. I'm not at all knowledgeable about classical Turkish poetry, so my comments are probably bullshit, but from what I gather, Suleiman was quite an accomplished poet. To a modern, ignorant reader like myself, his poems reeks of simping. Well, based on what I've learned in high school about classical poetry, it is indeed about simping about an idealized "beloved" in the most exquisite way, and Suleiman follows this trend. They don't have to mean what they say, because that is how poetry is supposed to be written. But knowing that all those flattery could have been written for Hürrem makes all the difference. Join the squeal party, fangirls!
So, him saying that Hürrem is better at poetry than him shows that she's quite well-read and intelligent, and has the respect of another fellow poet. And I'd like to emphasize that classical Turkish poetry wasn't just about saying pretty things; you had certain metres to follow, and say what you wanted to say in those meters with the fanciest mix of Persian/Arabic/Turkish vocabulary. I, for one, fail to understand those without the excessive use of a Ottoman-modern Turkish dictionary.
On an unrelated note, I have read some of her letters to Suleiman we still have today, and she sounds too cute! I can't tell if that's how palace people spoke at the time, or if it was her actual accent, but reading her letters about how much she misses and is worried about Suleiman make me go "awww..." While a considerable amount of letters were written by the Harem ladies' scribes, they say there's evidence that Hürrem wrote hers herself. Domestic Hürrem and Suleiman ftw!
Actually, thank you for this question. I need to revisit her letters sometime, some of which are compiled in this book.
tl;dr: Hürrem is a scholar and an intellectual.

A misconception about the witch trials that i see is fueled by Google is that it was mainly Salem, MA, or the most deaths happened in Salem. If you search "how many people died in the witch trials" the first result says 25 people were sent to death IN SALEM. Please know that America was late to the witch-hunt as the Puritans had just arrived in America in the 1600's. The real amount was mostly from Europe and it totalled around half a million. Please remember it was estimated 50,000-60,000. It was mostly women, but it included men, children, the elderly and even animals, as they were thought to be familiars of a suspected witch. The witch-hunts lasted many centuries, and decimated villages. Please remember that MANY, more were undocumented as they were killed by villagers and even some were killed as late as the nineteenth century; though the trials "officially" ended in 1775. Lots of older documentations of potential deaths were lost to time.

I found this VERY cool website today! It's a bit hard to explain what it is exactly but it has images and information about historical clothing from BC times to the 1970s. It's a website that's a work in progress but it has quite a lot of information already.

The sisters Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị are famous figures in ancient Vietnamese history.
Members of the Lac Viet ethnic group, the two sisters grew up in a wealthy aristocratic family in what is now Hanoi.
Most of modern Vietnam is the 1st century CE had been ruled by the Chinese Han Dynasty since 111 BCE. This period is known in Vietnamese history as the First Era of Northern Domination.
The Chinese regional governor in the first half of the 1st century CE was said to be a cruel tyrant. His actions appear to have been the catalyst for a rebellion against Han rule.
Some accounts record that the execution of Trưng Trắc’s husband was the trigger, while others state that she stood to have her substantial future inheritance drastically reduced by new laws. Whatever the case, in 40 CE the Trưng sisters instigated a massive Lac Viet revolt against the Han.
Beginning in the north, the rising quickly spread south to what is now central Vietnam.
It is said that 65 towns declared their support for the Trưng sisters.
The scale of the revolt overwhelmed the local Han forces and they fled northwards.
As the leader of the rebellion, Trưng Trắc was declared queen of a new Vietnamese state, ending almost 250 years of Chinese domination and 129 years of direct Han rule.
However, the Han emperor Guangwu was not prepared to relinquish his southernmost territories so easily.
Late in 42 CE, the general Ma Yuan led an army of more than 30,000 men into northern Vietnam, while a large war fleet sailed down the coast.
Despite their determined resistance, the sisters were outmatched. After suffering several defeats, the sisters were captured in early 43 CE. Ma Yuan had them beheaded and sent their heads to the imperial capital at Luoyang.
Ma Yuan’s victory initiated the period of Vietnamese history known as the Second Era of Northern Domination, which would last more than 500 years.
Though their independent state was short-lived, the Trưng sisters remain heroes in Vietnamese culture to this day. There are many temples all over the country dedicated to their memory and they are prominent symbols of Vietnamese independence, resistance and freedom.
