Which features Alex and Gaz having to pretend to be married, and also Gaz is a cocky little shit that's too smart for his own good.

When Alex received the assignment, he had made a promise to himself to keep professional during the course of the operation. The last thing he wanted was to allow things like emotions to complicate such a delicate mission, especially when already pretending to be married was outside of his realm of experience. Besides, he figured this would be rather easy to separate the character he pretends to be since he's working with someone he's never met before.

He was very wrong.

Alex actually wondered if this assignment was some sort of sick joke from Laswell and Price to either give him a heart attack or get him laid. Because, of course, that would be the only explanation as to why he was assigned to work with the most beautiful man he had ever met, and why he was struggling to maintain that sense of professionalism.

And it's not like Kyle was just effortlessly gorgeous, it was the fact he knew it. It was the fact Kyle Garrick carried himself with so much confidence, the way he was so intelligent and knew how to manipulate others without ever giving any hint of malice. To Alex, it was not just Gaz's good looks that made it difficult to keep personal feelings out of this assignment, but it was the way he committed to his role as Alex's newly beloved.

And for the first four days of the two week long cruise, Gaz and Alex had spent a lot of time discussing, in private, the boundaries of where the fake relationship ended and the real one began. They discussed the different theatrics they'd be willing to perform for the sake of keeping up the appearance of newly weds.

The theatrics proved hardest to establish. It was a combination of Gaz's understanding of needing to make their undercover story believable and Alex's refusal to be anything but professional. In the end, Alex ending up siding with Gaz, and agreed to displaying some PDA here and there in an effort to keep up appearances. And Gaz, ever the kind soul he is, told Alex if he was ever going to far for Alex's comfort, then he could simply say a codeword and Gaz would stop.

Alex thought he could live with the arrangements they had made and still maintain a professional relationship with the sergeant in private.

But on the fifth day of the cruise and their assignment, keeping professional proved rather difficult.

The two were by the large pool on deck, watching their targets of interest at a distance. Gaz was behind him on the pool chair, legs on either side of Alex and effectively trapping him as he rubbed sunscreen on his back. Alex couldn't quite determine if it was the bright sun bearing down on him or how close Gaz was and how his hands felt trailing along his back that made him so light-headed. And he really didn't feel pressured to figure out which one it was, given he may ruin the professional aspect of their relationship by admitting such a thing.

Alex tensed as Gaz's arms suddenly wrapped around his middle, and the light brush of lips against his shoulder sent a chill down his spine.

"Looks like they're waiting on someone to join them before they do anything else." Gaz whispered against Alex's ear, and it took more effort than he would be willing to admit to process what Gaz had said. He nodded, swallowing thickly as he tried to focus on the group of people he should have been watching the entire time. Kyle lets out a soft chuckle before lightly kissing Alex's shoulder.

"Having trouble focusing?" Kyle muttered against his neck, but Alex didn't respond. Another chuckle from Gaz, and his arms wrapped tighter around Alex's middle, a few light kisses to his neck accompanying the act.

"Come on, let's get in the water and cool off a bit. We've just put sunblock on you and you're already turning red." Kyle commented before slowly getting up from the chair, stretching as does so. Alex blushed deeper, mentally cursing himself and Gaz as he stood up himself. Gaz allowed himself to be used as a crutch, slowly walking both of them towards the water's edge. Alex took a deep breath as he tried to regain his composure, hoping the shock of the cool water will help get rid of whatever just happened.

Little Mizzy Muffet and the Spider King - By Catfish (8.5/10)

Classic nursery rhymes and horror fit together very nicely. Every time I read another chapter of this I get another pleasant surprise. It's available for free on Line Webtoon under the Canvas amateur comic section. I think that's a shame, because this is miles better than alot of the featured comics.

I'm not going to beat around the bush. The Spider King's design slaps. He looks awesome. He's epic. Every scene he's in becomes more serious and important as soon as he shows up. Half of the commenters in the comment section are thirsty teenagers who want to be kidnapped by him. He's a powerful force that doesn't want to hurt anyone, but his existence causes problems for the weak humans around him. Including the protagonist, who he wants to marry. He doesn't work for free, and Mizzy is a kind girl. So, when her friends get in trouble she feels tempted to use him. Even though his services come with a very high price.

The Spider King wants to marry Mizzy even though she doesn't know who he is. He literally appears in her bedroom with an army of spiders and says she doesn't have a choice. He's willing to wait and do favors for her, but that is it. She is going to the demon realm with him, no matter what.

He's not a nice guy. He's just not the kind of demon that enjoys killing. He gives her three wishes to gain her approval and maybe her trust. He isn't giving them out of the goodness of his heart. His motivation is entirely selfish and he doesn't care about anybody but Mizzy. He also watches her all the time. His spiders work like spy cameras. She can't run or hide.

The other characters are cool too. All of them are connected to old nursery rhymes and that theme gets dark fast. Do not read this unless you can handle horror, bullying and suicide. One of Mizzy's closest friends dies right away. His name is Humphrey. He's fat and smart and he's got no confidence. Mizzy watches him fall into despair.

She starts to see things. Negative emotions are visible when you use demon magic. Humphrey is Humpty Dumpty metaphorically. After years of bullying he decides to end his life. He jumps off the school rooftop. Everybody in Mizzy's friend group feels guilty, because they tried to save him, but their words didn't reach him.

She noticed something was very wrong. She was there when he died. Everyone tried to stop him on the rooftop that day. She's in shambles, and then the Spider King makes everything a thousand times worse. She asks him the ultimate question. He says yes. One of her three wishes could have easily saved Humphrey. This conversation defines the rest of the story. Mizzy meets plenty of troubled kids in high school. She actually lost her parents and got adopted, so seeing kids like her suffer really affects her.

The Spider King does have feelings for her, but he doesn't understand her. His wish gifts are a guilt laden curse. In the beginning I didn't think he was making her suffer on purpose, but I'm not sure anymore. The Spider King is fairly robotic, and overly honest, but there are too many hints and hidden meanings in his words. He is not human. The way he behaves makes that crystal clear. When more demons appear in town he doesn't lift a finger. He's only willing to protect Mizzy. She will have to use her precious limited supply of wishes to protect her hometown.

The author has hinted that the spider demon has a monster form. His handsome human face is not his real body. Spiders crawl out of his eyes sometimes. He doesn't show his emotions. He gives Mizzy power and he never forces her to use the wishes. The crushing weight of that power starts to really affect her psychologically. When another friend of hers starts rebelling because of problems at home she knows why. When her friends feel insecure she knows. She's empathetic, unlike the Spider King, so seeing these things drains her.

She wants to help, but she doesn't want to get married.

Mizzy is cute. She's compassionate. She's popular. She has a good life and a loving family. The Spider King might actually be the villain by the end, not the main love interest. He is not giving her a choice. After the last wish she has to go with him, and she won't be able to ignore the suffering people around her forever. The Spider King is like every good nursery rhyme villain. He doesn't force our protagonist to take action. He tempts her and guides her towards an interesting and dangerous path. One that she doesn't even want. One that she feels obligated to follow.

Sadly this series is in black and white, even though it looks much better in color. That is its biggest flaw.

Shelter chapter 1&2

Plot

Karl sets out to find the truth about his crazy uncle Beethoven . It was never his intention to gain a new best friend. One that will watch over him when he is gone ...

Chapter 1

Late at night around 3 am In the Vienna realm a young man name Karl van Beethoven poured a cup of coffee while on his laptop. His eyes were incredibly exhausted after the long day sheepishly writing on a note pad with red ink . Karl slowly started growing more tired as he drank the bitter drink . A massive lightning bolt struck , causing Karl to snap out of his sleepiness. The Viennese eyes were sunken purple from the lack of sleep . "How does my uncle ..do all of this …" he questioned to himself. Earlier that week his uncle Ludwig van Beethoven was behind on his composing because of a "realm tour " he was going to . Karl, being the "favorite nephew " decides to help his uncle out in the hopes of getting expensive gifts in the future and more music equipment. The work was more than he bargained for but he needed to gain favors. Lightning struck again this time ringing in Karl's ears , "Aaaahhh i NEED to sleep" he screamed . The lights started randomly flicking around the tenant prompting him to worry slightly. He turned the light switch off and started making another cup of coffee, this time pouring an entire bag of sugar and heavy cream in the pot ."I have to stay away for as long as possible " Karl told himself, drinking it straight from the pot .

"Hahaha how are you tired when it's only 3 in the morning "a cruel voice laughed at him . Karl's eyes turned into the size as pin pricks quickly grabbed a black pan . "Zeigen Sie sich als Eindringling! " he shouted blindly swinging the weapon "Ich kann auch Deutsch sprechen " the voice replied, turning on the light revealing to be no one other than Nikolas Tesla. "Actually I can speak acht so do you wanna speak German or Valhalla ? " Tesla asked while doing his nails . "Well smart ass that's nothing impressive Mozart can speak fünfzehn ! " Karl bragged " Is Mozart in the room with us right now ? " Tesla looked around . "Yet again that's what happens when your dorky uncle has friends that are from Poland, France, Germany and of course Vienna…" Karl paused " Wait a minute ..why the fuck am I explaining any of this to you GET OUT " . "Hold on, I'm looking for your uncle Ludwig, I wanna perform an experiment and Hrist isn't telling me anything ! I swear Ludwig is brainwashing her " Tesla felt worried. "I don't care ! Get lost , Geh weg, bousculer, non è il mio problema , Ite invadendi domum alienam ! " Karl pushed Tesla out " If I see you again I'm calling Hrist byeeeeee " , "But my - " Karl slammed the door on Tesla locking it . The moment the man turned around Tesla was right next to him . Karl started swinging the frying pan like mad , "Hold on I don't mean to be a threat " Tesla easily dodged Karl swings. "What do you want, man? I'm too tired for this bullshit " Karl rubbed his eyes .

"Why are you so tired god I barely know " Tesla smiled, " I have a lot of files to organize because my uncle is an old man who doesn't understand the internet beyond liking Hrist's group human photos and making the corniest pick up lines ever…plus that secret file of a certain goddess "selfies '' I accidentally found . '' Karl turned a light shade of green . "Selfies !? You mean those awkward ones where Hrist covered her face in a mask and was cringe, " Tesla recalled. "No …not those '' Karl grew light headed. " I could help organize those files …for a price …" Tesla stated, " I have no money " Karl mentioned. "No something worth more than money…" Tesla laughed "knowledge ! ". "What are you talking about…" Karl whined , " Being a nurse, have you ever wanted to make the world a better place ? " Tesla pointed out. "No, I could barely do surgery on my uncle without him complaining every 30 seconds that I'm doing it wrong " Karl rolled his eyes . "Did you give him any anesthesia ? " Tesla wondered. " Wait, I thought that was for humans …" Karl stopped for a moment to think "Uncle has a high pain tolerance….he wasn't even in pain just bored " . "Hmm I remember Hlokk doing open Intestine surgery on Edison…yelling at him for taking her twin to an illegal fighting ring " Tesla recalled. "I don't know who either are, " Karl groaned.

"The point is you are changing humanity for the better ! Tesla pointed out . " Do I look like I give a damn about humanity ? " Karl started pushing him out "I'd say goodbye but there is no good in goodbye with you ! " he slammed the door shut . "But you are helping a noble cause " Tesla was right behind him again . Nickolas was basically a salesman that just wouldn't go away . Karl turned around quietly grabbing a rubber chicken then cracking his knuckles . Before Tesla could speak Karl tackled him resulting in a massive fight full of angry German swearing . After a few minutes Karl opened the door . "I'm glad we had a talk ! Just remember no more random visits at three in the morning.."Karl stated . "Noted " Tesla had a rubber chicken wrapped around him clumsy walking away.

He slammed the door rubbing his eyes with a loud sigh. He made another pot full of coffee, pouring another bag full of sugar and cream before drinking it while organizing for his uncle. By the time it was in the morning he was finally finished , Karl stripped most of his clothing off . He slammed himself onto Ludwig's messy bed , "Damn you uncle " Karl hissed barely able to sleep despite working all night on the project . It was probably because of the caffeine style in his system but that didn't deter Karl. He got up going through Ludwig's medicine drawer , "He wouldn't mind right if I borrowed his melatonin right ? " Karl grabbed a bottle of gummy bear sleeping medicine. He shoved a handful in his mouth before putting it ,s fixing the unorganized messy . Finally the medicine did its work making Karl sleepy.

While waiting to fall asleep Karl looked through old photos of Ludwig . They say gods don't age unless they hit their prime and with Louis it's still hard to tell . Ludwig didn't exactly like talking about his childhood or anything like that . All he mentioned was that Karl was just like him . In Fact Everyone said that exact statement. Its gotten to the point were he is nicknamed "Mini Luddy '' from Beethoven close friends . Despite being named after his father Kaspar Anton Karl van Beethoven, people always questioned if Karl was Ludwig's son. Quite naturally his uncle was happy to claim Karl as his own while his biological father seethed with jealousy. Kasper never said anything but Karl could tell so he stayed quiet while Ludwig was oblivious. Now they were rumors of Karl being Ludwig's secret child . Thankfully his uncle denied stating that " If I wanted a son I wouldn't steal my brother's wife ! " and "Karl his my son in spirit " . At least Ludwig finally accepted his sister in laws after he found his girlfriend Hrist. His mother and uncle still don't like each other for gods knows why but they are quiet about it instead of screaming . Karl wondered if Ludwig was secretly jealous because his father and uncle had a wife and he didn't .

" Some things are just better left a mystery " he shook his head . It was getting hard to think because of the medicine making him drowsy. Karl took one last look of his uncle's picture. Ludwig hair was much shorter and raven black instead of wild mane . Despite that he is still recognizable looking every calm and full of life . A few thoughts ran through his head making him more and more tired . "Why...do I care so much ..." Karl questioned, he didn't have time to answer himself as his head plopped on the pillow . A few seconds later Karl fell into a deep sleep , Tesla opened the door sliding himself near Karl . "So you do care about your uncle..." Tesla whispered, grabbing an old photo of Beethoven. The inventor never fully got along with the composer due to their clashing personalities . It wasn't hatred at all, just disdain because Tesla couldn't understand Beethoven's cold judgmental personality and Hrist warm fluffy loving smile .Ludwig just spat too much venom for Nickolas to make an antidote.

How could his darling niece love someone so crude , childish , hot tempered, suspicious god with less manners then a stray dog . Tesla asked Hrist a few times on what she saw in him but Hrist only spoke nothing but good about him . She talks about how romantic and kind he is then showed him the many gifts he gave her. At the end of the day Hrist is a grown woman who is capable of taking care of herself in witch Tesla had learned to accept . Sasaki and Qin seem to have taken a liking to him . Alvtir questions on why Hrist would choose someone "so old" , while the youngest one Ou asked a million questions then demanded both Karl and Beethoven play with him . Simo was fine with Ludwig but stated that " If you break her heart I'll send you into a permanent slumber ". Basically as long as Hrist is happy then that's all that matters . Tesla could easily see how deeply in love she is with him so he let his distaste for him go, replacing it with curiosity. Maybe one day they could get along if he just understood Ludwig more.

Tesla pulled out a smartwatch clicking it on Karl's right wrist. Finally, he plucked a black feather laying it on the watch that turned a bright blue then turned off. Tesla put the photo in Karl's arm . "Until later Mini Luddy " Tesla slowly closed the door allowing the much younger man to sleep …at least for now …

Chapter 2

Karl woke up tasting the leftover coffee from last night , he stretched up his wings back and forth scratching his molted black feathers all over his uncle's bed . This is common for winged gods who don't close their wings before they sleep, something Beethoven always told him or else molting happens . "Hmph ? " Karl noticed a strange watch on his arm. It looked no different from your average smartwatch that you would buy online . It was probably one of the smart watches Beethoven bought for Karl that the youngster wore on and off and probably forgot about. Karl shrugged, deciding instead to clean his feathers off and change the sheets. After that he took the watch off to shower then dress himself. While brushing his teeth he randomly remembered that mad scientist rambling about nonsense he couldn't completely remember. Whatever Tesla was talking about Karl wanted to be gone before he came back . Karl opened a draw back pouch shoving peanut butter cheddar crackers inside of it along with a charger for his bluetooth headphones . He slid the bluetooth headphones over his head while the oversized shades laid comfortably on his horns.

"This should keep me away from him, " Karl smiled at himself. Before he could take another step he still saw the old picture of Ludwig 2nd . Karl took a picture staring at it . It was during a time where people just loved wearing suits and dresses instead of casual clothes . Till this day Karl would often beg his uncle to wear something that isn't a suit especially when he has the hygiene of a "pig in clothing " . Granted Beethoven didn't like being called that but to Karl it was simply the truth . His uncle needed to learn how to wear clean clothes and learn basic table manners . Karl wondered what Beethoven was like thousands of years ago . A part of him was just curious, the otherside told him to fly away . "How long are you going to keep staring at your uncle kiddo ? " a hologram spoke to him . *click *" What the hell do you want ? " Karl turned around pulling out his pocket knife . "Relax kiddo it's just me .." Tesla slid his hologram back to the smart watch . "Grrrr" Karl grabbed the watch, "Woah woah woah ! Would you really break the watch Uncle Ludwig gifted to you ? Tesla teased " I would understand if you did tho you probably pon it for new headphones anyway …"..

Karl wordlessly threw his watch on the bed . He rubbed his hair harshly trying his best not to grab his horns and just scream. "What ..do you want ..' he growled furiously. "Hmm I thought I explained enough yesterday we needed to do an experiment and well you just happened to have the smartwatch to work it out" Tesla mentioned. Angered boiled over Karl's temple , the viennese quickly grabbed a few boxes of cigars, throwing it on his sack . He heard footsteps passing by the door , Tesla creaked the door open revealing his black and blue eyes . "We need ..to talk .." He grinned. "I'm not asking of your intentions again, just get out " Karl spat out . I won't be here for long give me 5 minutes and if I'm not out just call the cops " Tesla shrugged. "I don't think this is about my uncle but go ahead I'm listening " Karl furrowed a brow . "Remember how I told you yesterday that I was looking for Beethoven ? Well that was a lie I was looking for the entire time, in fact I even went as far as borrowing a smartwatch about a week ago to testc Tesla mentioned. "Why ? Do you even know my full name ? Why so I a regular 3,000 year old man Have anything to do with you" Karl crossed his arms. " I want to learn more about Ludwig and dissect his brain and I figured the best way to learn is through his Nephew Karl van Beethoven and what better way to learn than through time travel ! "Tesla jumped up and down

. "Time travel ? " Karl moved his head , "Yes my dear good fellow Time travel ! Something that was only thought up in movies was now possible ! " Tesla clipped the watch back on . "And why should I trust someone I barely know with such a complex and dangerous subject " Karl pointed out the obvious. "Because don't you want to learn more about Ludwig? Where does he come from? His past " Tesla shook his shoulder "Well how it's possible! " . "No .." Karl shook his head " I don't give a damn about my crazy uncle or his stupid plans " . "Lying isn't exactly nice Mini luddy I mean I just saw you stare at his pictures and hug the stuff Tazzy do you clearly miss him just a little " . "That is none of your concern " Karl replied, " Alright but I just saying that its a once in a lifetime event. Why not live a little and have fun ? " Tesla patted his shoulder "Summer is ending this month so ..you know ".

"It must be very lonely in such a stubborn apartment with no friends battling with your schizophrenia and personality disorder every once in a while but I bet you a friend could easily change that " Tesla whispered, "Do it …do it …do it …." Karl heard a great force tell him to just go along with it . At least for now that is to keep his mind out of boredom . " Let's get this over with " Karl sighed , " Great ! I shall make this fun for us ! " . Later Karl and Tesla sat on a park bench, and the gifted scientist showed him how to work the simple device . "Just for a few minutes ?" Karl made it clear that he didn't plan on going on a wild goose chase . "Yes I already set up the time date so everything will go into plan just press the button " Tesla recalled. "Okay .." Karl pressed the button. He immediately felt a red aura around him glowing, "Good luck Karl ! '' Tesla stood back. Karl mentally panicked as a ball engulfed him . Everything around him is changing. He felt a strain pin down on his chest until a sudden force jerked him causing a massive fall onto the middle of the street. Karl laid there for a few minutes his body processing air sickness. He would have vomited if he didn't skip breakfast that very morning . He laid there for the next 15 minutes as if he was going into a deep sleep only to be woken up by someone ruffling through his sack . "How much money do you think he has ?" A teen asked.

" I didn't see any, just a bunch of snacks' ' said another one . "Maybe we could steal it and get guilders from it ..hmmm I wonder how much these ear warmers are worth " the young teen touched Karl headphones. You are in Vienna '' the driver told him ."Right ,..right ,,right ahem can I get a ride? I've seen feeling wonky for the last 45 minutes " Karl explained. "Are you drunk? " The driver asked , "Nope, I can't handle alcohol, which is ironic coming from a guy whose family drinks nothing but wine. In fact if I recall my grandfather or great-grandfather owned a wine company but I can't remember which one though " Karl mentioned. "Okay …you're clearly on drugs " the man thought but didn't say out loud, he let Karl in the cart for a few guilders. "Hmm this place has a lot more horses then i remember…" Karl started recording certain events . "So where do you come from, you seem kinda lost ? " the driver asked . A while later Karl stood in front of a wine tavern , "Wine ….of course it's wine ..," he opened the door. The strong smell of booze , cigarettes and old cheap perfume made his nose burn. "Geez, what is this place ? It looks like the rotting end of a shit stained train station…" he commented between steps "the tavern i go to looks much better than this …" . Karl's appearance got him unwanted attention so he sat down . He tapped on the table " Hey bartender…bartender " . "What do you want !? " a middle aged man rudely commented . Lemonade? I can't drink alcohol because of my -" Karl tried to explain but was cut off with the bartender slamming a bottle of orange juice "now get out of my sight " the bartender growled. Karl sat on a table far from the area where he was scolded . He then poured orange juice onto the cup sipping on it . "I hope I see my uncle soon " he sighed in defeat .

HEART'S PRICE - CHAPTER 23

*Warning: Adult Content*

"I can't turn it off," Julian Hart complains as we walk towards Thaddeus Barker's mansion.

"And it's getting worse. I can't even go out in public anymore. People just, stare."

"Have you thought of contacting the Fae?" Noah asks.

"Maybe this is normal for a Fae your age."

Julian grimaces.

They are walking a few yards behind Dane Hunter and Ambrose Thorne, who are deep in conversation about the case.

"Of course I have," he says in an undertone.

"It's just..." He lets out a breath of frustration.

Noah nods towards Dane's back with a question on his face and Julian nods in return.

"Yeah," he murmurs.

"I think his worst nightmare is that I'll step through that doorway again and I won't come back. Even talking about the Fae Realm upsets him."

"Okay but Julian..."

"I know," he sighs.

"If whatever's wrong with me doesn't resolve itself soon, I'll have to do something. I can't keep walking around like, like a fucking glow-worm."

Noah glances at him.

'Living treasure' seems more accurate but Noah keeps quiet.

Reaching the house, they draw to a halt.

The entrance is paved with green slate flagstones, framed by ostentatious columns that support a great balcony on the second story.

Kneeling, Dane lifts the expensive-looking woven doormat and retrieves a key.

"Really?" Julian laughs.

"He keeps the key under the mat?"

"Being rich don't make you smart," Dane replies and opens the grand front doors.

Inside, he quickly punches some buttons on a little keypad on the wall, disarming the home security system.

"How'd you know the code?" Noah asks.

Dane just shrugs.

"Coleridge got it from the company that makes this system. I watched her use it."

As Dane's former boss, Chief Coleridge is unusually supportive of his role as a private investigator, often allowing him to accompany and assist the police at crime scenes where he usually wouldn't be allowed.

"Does Coleridge know you're doing this?" Noah asks now.

Again, Dane shrugs.

"Not officially."

"Ah, wonderful," Ambrose says.

"So we're breaking and entering. Good to know."

"I said not officially," Dane growls.

"The department will ignore any calls they get about this place tonight. Unless it's from one of us," he adds. "Even so, we should be careful. Lots of rubberneckers been driving past lately, trying to get a look at the place, so no lights except in rooms without windows. Otherwise, flashlights only better yet, just use your eyes, if you can."

Noah nods and see a flash of amethyst as Julian looks my way.

With his Fae vision, Julian can read a book by starlight, or so he says.

Noah’s own wolf-sight is a little different.

He don't see colors and some details stand out more sharply, while others are lost.

"Ambrose and I will start down here. Noah, you and Julian take the second floor. Text me if you find anything."

He turns and heads off towards the library where the portrait once hung.

With a lifted brow and a slight smirk, Ambrose follows him.

Noah knows the only reason Dane invited him along is for 'observation' and he also knows Ambrose is under no illusions on that front.

Maybe having to work together will make them more inclined to get along but Noah’s not about to place any bets on that.

He watches them disappear through the library doors and then turn back to Julian.

He's absorbed with a large painting in a place of pride near the stairs.

Like the one that was stolen, this is also a portrait, though its subject is far more handsomely depicted.

Thaddeus Barker stares down at us, looking like a triumphant general, or a swashbuckling sea-captain, or something equally ridiculous.

"Pompous ass," Julian mutters, arms crossed tightly over his chest.

"Why do we care about this guy, again?"

"Because he's missing and he's part of the case you're working on?" Noah suggests.

"Oh, right."

"Well, shall we?" Noah asks and touches Julian lightly on the arm.

He startles badly, gasping and spinning away from Noah as if he'd stuck him with a pin, eyes flashing violet and a hint of sharp teeth at the corners of his mouth.

"Whoa!" Noah exclaims, backing away and hands raised.

"Sorry! I thought I was the jumpy one."

Julian stares at him, eyes wide and breathing hard, until Noah start to worry.

Then he comes out of it, releasing a long breath, closing his eyes and leaning one hand against the wall with the other over his face.

Noah reaches towards him again, concerned.

"Julian, are you..."

"Don't touch me!" Julian snaps and Noah freeze.

He takes another breath and goes on in a gentler tone.

"Sorry. Just, don't touch me."

"Okay, sure, I won't touch you Julian. But, are you okay, though?"

He nods, then shakes his head.

"I don't know. Fuck."

Going to the foot of the stairs, h Julian sits on the bottom one, leaning forward with his head in his hands.

"My senses are like, all turned up to the max. Everything tastes weird, everything feels weird and if I touch someone it's like sticking my finger in an electrical outlet, except instead of electricity I get shocked with emotions. Even Dane. I haven't, we haven't been able to, er, do anything for like, two weeks now. It's starting to get to him."

"This has been going on for two weeks?" Noah asks.

It was true Noah hadn't seen Julian much since the aftermath of the party.

He'd been busy with his new job and with taking care of Dougal and the house and Dane hadn't had any work for him to do on the case.

"Yeah. Well, it started a bit before that, actually but about two weeks ago was when it got to where I couldn't hide it anymore."

"Julian, I think you really need to figure this out," Noah says, an itch of concern beginning to grow around his heart.

"Listen, I helped Dane contact the Fae last time. We could do it together if you want me and you, I mean. Dane... Dane doesn't have to know."

Noah swallows, finding his throat suddenly dry.

Even the thought of doing something behind Dane's back behind his brother's, his alpha's back makes him nervous but he also understand Julian's hesitance and if he can help...

"Would you?" Julian asks, looking up at Noah who is alarmed to see the corner of his mouth tremble.

"I really am... a little scared, actually."

"Of course I will," Noah says, with more commitment than he feel.

"Tomorrow afternoon?"

"Okay."

Julian takes a deep breath and smiles and suddenly Noah feels weirdly protective of him and has to remind himself he's not some fragile flower but is something fierce and wild as any Wolf.

"Um, should we go upstairs then?" Noah asks.

Julian nods and gets to his fee, and together they climb the wide, curving stairs to the second floor.

"Do you want to split up, or stick together?" Julian asks when they reach the top.

"Together. We have different skills. We should both look at everything," Noah says.

Really, Noah just doesn't want to leave Julian on his own but he knows if he say that he'll insist that they split up and maybe even shove me down the stairs for good measure.

"Cool. Where should we start?"

"Um, how about at that end," Noah says, pointing down the hall.

"And then we can make our way back towards the rooms over the library."

Julian agrees and they walk down the long, wide hallway side by side.

Noah lights the way with his cellphone, keeping it low, though more to save battery than anything else, the only window is at the hall's far end and it's facing the back of the house.

They start with a bedroom and it quickly becomes clear that Julian has the advantage when it comes to sight.

Even with his eyes Shifted and his glasses tucked safely in his shirt pocket, Julian picks out details Noah can only see with the help of the light from his phone.

"I think I'll Shift," Noah tell him, as he reads the tiny label on a bottle of perfume.

"See what I can pick up as a wolf."

Julian nods and sets the little bottle down again with care, then begins a close inspection of one wall.

Turning away, Noah quickly stripes off his clothes, folds them neatly and then Shifts.

Somehow it feels weird to Shift indoors, somehow awkward and wrong and he’s more aware than usual of the grind and pop of bone, the pull and stretch of muscle and skin and the itching tickle of sprouting fur as he remakes himself in his animal form.

Giving himself a thorough shake to settle his coat, Noah looks up to find Julian watching him with his head to one side and a slight smile on his lips.

"You know, if I saw you at the pound, I'd probably adopt you, Noah," he says.

"You're the cutest little wolf I've ever seen."

Noah barks sharply in reply, he has always hated to be called 'cute' but Julian only laughs.

The sound is light and musical, unearthly and sweet and Noah forgets his annoyance as he’s charmed by it.

"Noah?"

Suddenly Julian right in front of Noah and he starts with surprise as he sees that he's instantaneously crossed the room.

No, he realize, it's not that he moved fast.

It's that Noah lost track of time or rather, that Julian made him lose it, with the enchantment in his laugh.

"Are you alright? You looked a little out of it there," Julian says, leaning down to look at Noah who blinks his wolf's eyes at him and considers whether he ought to Shift back and tell him he just put some sort of Fae spell on him but decide against it.

Right now, they need to focus.

Julian's weirdness will have to wait.

The house has been cleaned since the night of the gala, which is fortunate in some ways and unfortunate in others.

On the one hand, all traces of Thaddeus Barker's guests and their various activities have been erased.

On the other, so has anything that might have served as a clue.

Then again, two weeks have passed and even if anything did remain, it would be stale and faint by now.

Even so, Noah sweeps the room, sniffing every corner and crevice, hunting for anything out of the ordinary or out of place, a strange odor, a change in the flow of the air, an odd creak in the floor...

There's nothing and by mutually understood agreement, they move on to the next room and the next.

It seems each has some sort of 'theme' based on a period of history or of geography and Noah regrets that his wolf's mind can't quite appreciate it the way his human self would.

Then again, this is probably a good thing or he'd be too distracted by the ancient Chinese calligraphy, the Grecian urns, the French pastoral paintings and even the modern art.

Mostly, he'd have been distracted by his outrage that Barker has so many things in his stupid ugly house that obviously belong in a museum and probably should be repatriated before that.

When they reach the room over the library, where Noah and Ambrose had found the tooth which Dane had turned over to the police once it became clear that Barker had disappeared, Noah goes straight to the spot where they'd found it.

There's nothing.

Not a trace or a hint of anything but dust and the lingering, citrusy scent of some kind of cleaning agent.

Noah snorts a wolfish sneeze and Julian laughs again but this time he’s ready and able to ignore the lure of the sound.

Noah pads over to the wall and sniffs along the seam between it and the floor, then across to the opposite side and then back again, comparing the difference.

At last, though, Noah has to admit that there's nothing here.

Only one room remains, the one that shares the other side of this wall and is directly above the library.

Noah doesn't expect it to hold any special secrets, this was the room that Ambrose had entered, when we'd stood side by side, each ready to throw open a door.

He'd discovered a couple of guests in flagrante delicto and quickly excused himself.

Julian doesn't know this though and gives the room the same careful attention he has all the others.

Feeling it's his duty to do the same, even if he suspect it's a waste of time, Noah follow Julian’s lead.

Noah is just about to give up and Shift back to his human form (Julian having carried his pile of clothes along in his arms) when he catches a whiff of something odd.

It's an ashy, mealy scent, something that lands at the back of his tongue and sticks with a dry, gritty feel.

Noah licks his tongue between my teeth like a dog that's been fed peanut butter, thinking it's a bit of extra nasty dust but it doesn't help.

He snorts several times to clear his nose but the scent remains.

Attempting to follow it, he does a last slow circuit of the room.

It's almost faded completely when, suddenly, he catch it again, very strong.

It's coming from the fireplace, he realize.

The flow of air must generally draft upward, out through the chimney, occasionally, though, it reversed and flowed the other way.

Trotting over, Noah pokes his snout through the grate, taking a few experimental sniffs.

Immediately, he sneezes and then sneeze again.

"Noah, jeez. Don't sniff the ash. Seriously..." Julian speaks in the same, exasperated tone that Noah typically use with Dougal when he does something stupid and he fights the urge to turn and snap at him.

Instead, he Shifts, regaining his human shape with a wrenching twist and snap of flesh and bone and then take his piled clothes from Julian's hands, turning away to dress.

"There's something there," Noah says.

In the ashes."

"Really? What?"

"I don't know. Something, wrong."Julian kneels and pulls aside the grate, brushing his hands through the remnants of the last fire the little hearth had contained.

Then he goes still.

"Shit," he swears.

"Noah, there's fucking bone fragments in here. And, this."

Julian turns and holds something out for Noah to see.

‘It's a ring, gaudy and ostentatious and I’ve seen it before.Then, though, the hand that wore it had been sliding down Julian's side, coming dangerously close to crossing a line.’

"Oh... fuck," Noah sighs, as several things fall into place.

Then he pulls out his cell-phone and calls Dane.

"Yeah, Dane. We did. I think..."

Noah turns the ring over in his palm and remember the weird smell of the ash.

"I think we just found Thaddeus Barker."
