Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Steve needed a break. They all needed a break. He didn't want to leave forever or even a long time, just a short vacation so he could breathe. The world is a whole lot different than it was in the forties, so coming up with ideas is more complicated than one might think. Thankfully, a solution appeared before him. Well, actually, it hit him in the head. He still wasn't great with technology, so he kept up with events through newspapers. Tony thought it was ridiculous to order newspapers when he could find all the information he needed by using the phone he bought him.
This is why he would occasionally go through the paper at him instead of simply handing it to him. In that morning's paper was an advertisement for a baseball game. He has loved baseball ever since he was a kid. Bucky would walk him to the fields after school and play a game with him as no one else wanted to play with the hallow-boned kid with asthma. Sometimes they would stay out there so long that it would be pitch black outside when they walked back home. Hopefully, he was going to that game and convinced Buck to come with him.
If people thought that Steve was anti-social, Bucky was practically a recluse. He didn't leave the tower much unless it was to occasionally join them on missions, so this would be perfect for helping him integrate with society but still have a sense of familiarity.
"Hey, Buck. Whatcha doing?" he asked, peaking over Bucky's shoulder to see the book in his hands.
"What do you want, Steve?"
"Why do you think I want something?"
"I know that tone. It's the same one you used when you wanted to eat chili dogs at Coney Island."
"If I remember correctly, they were delicious, and you took that cart girl out on a date the next day."
"You're forgetting the part when we got on the Cyclone and puked on everyone."
"That was like seventy years ago."
"And you still have the survival instinct of a squirrel on crack."
"Hey!"
"Back to my original question. What do you want?"
"There's a baseball game tomorrow, and I want you to come with me."
"No."
"Please, please. I really don't want to be there all by myself."
"Steve, there's going to be a bunch of people there with you."
"You know what I mean. Come on, I'll buy you a hot dog and some cotton candy."
"What color of cotton candy?"
"Pink."
"Throw in a bag of popcorn, and you have yourself a deal."
* * *
He could tell that Bucky was uncomfortable in the crowd. Despite the summer heat, he still insisted on wearing a jacket. Steve knew that it was to hide his prosthetic. Once they got their food and sat down in their seats, he calmed down a bit. They watched the game and reminisced about the old days. Overall, they were both having a good time. He hasn't seen Bucky smile this much since he got him "The Hobbit" film series for his birthday. Then someone tapped his shoulder to get his attention and pointed at the big screen over the stadium.
It was focused on him and Buck with the words 'Kiss Cam' surrounded by a pink heart. Oh. He turned bright red, and when he glanced at Bucky, he looked equally shocked and embarrassed.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" the crowd shouted at him.
He made eye contact with Bucky, who narrowed his eyes in response.
"Don't even think about it, Rogers."
"Please?"
His resolve immediately crumbled, "Okay. One-"
Steve leaned in and kissed him, one arm wrapped around his shoulders to keep him close. The crowd cheered, and the camera moved on to its next happy couple (aka victims). They laughed the experience off, still flushed from the awkwardness of the situation. The rest of the game was spent in peace. He even stopped by the gift shop and got Buck a bobblehead.
"Thank you for taking me here," he said to Steve while they were walking out.
"No problem. I'm sorry if I embarrassed you with the whole kiss cam thing."
Bucky paused and pulled him in for another kiss, only releasing him after he was sure he made his point.
"I never said I was embarrassed."
Definitely, a day well spent.
Tony eventually found the footage from the kiss cam about three days later. He sent it to everyone and used a screenshot for that year's Christmas card.

oooh a beech one where everyone thinks his girl is super innocent and stuff (but really johnny just makes sure the marks he leaves are hidden) but one day she leaves scratches/nail indents on his biceps/shoulder and the boys have an absolute field day w/it
“Bye, babe,” you kiss his cheek, parting ways to head towards the library as Johnny headed for practice. You walked a little slower than usual, the events from the night before still rolling through your head.
Johnny thought he got to the rink early, but he finds he’s later than usual. He says hi to a few people on his way in, dropping his backpack at his stall and taking his coat off. Cam sits down next to him with a suspiciously wide grin on his face.
“Have a good night last night? Get the girlfriend to do anything fun?” Cam prods, always trying to get info about the two of you.
Johnny shakes his head, an eye roll accompanying it, “get the fuck out, Yorkie. You know damn well that’s none of your business. We don’t all share every story with the room.”
Cam scoffs, “you just don’t want to admit she’s boring in bed. God, do you even get blown?”
Johnny ignores that comment, huffing a breath out of his nose and proceeding to change. He pulls his shirt off just as he hears Keaton say something behind him that gets cut short. He glances back and Keaton looks shocked.
“Pehrson, are you good?” Johnny questions, turning towards him. Cam chokes on his drink next to Johnny, making him even more confused, “what is going on?”
“Did you lose a fight with a campus squirrel or is your girlfriend that rowdy?” Becker asks from a couple stalls over.
Johnny’s cheeks go dark red and he tries to see over his shoulder but can’t. He lifts one arm, looking down at his ribs and he can see the faint outlines. He knew you’d dug in, but not that hard.
“Got a hickey on the inside of your arm there, bud,” Becker says, smacking the spot as he walks out of the locker room.
Cam and Keaton are howling with laughter, falling over themselves as others take notice. The comments come flooding and Johnny ducks his head, letting them roll off of him. He knows the boys are just having fun, but he wants to throw out a warning anyways.
“No one says a word to her! You can pick on me, but there’s no embarrassing her,” he points, looking around at his teammates. They groan but agree, letting the subject die down.
Johnny takes the moment to send you a text, ‘You left some marks apparently. Boys saw them, sorry.’
‘If you could see the hickey you left on my collarbone you’d be really sorry. I’m gonna murder you for it.’
Johnny smirks and shakes his head, sending one last message, ‘I’ll have to give the other side a match tonight 😉’

Strange & Deranged
I couldn’t get the thought of a Drowley Addams family out of my head, and so I decided to write one for Valentine’s Day. Enjoy!
By now, everyone knew better than to disturb the mayor of their small town during his lunch break, so when three distinct knocks rang out, Dean sighed and drew back from his husband. “Guess we have to see what’s going on.”
“Oh, I am sure they can handle it, darling” Crowley drawled, trying to kiss him again.
“You are incorrigible.”
“And that is why you married me.”
Dean couldn’t very well deny it, but that wasn’t the point right now. “I am ready to bet that was Cas, and you know he only ever disturbs us when there’s an emergency.”
Crowley sighed. “You’re no fun when you’re being the voice of reason, Squirrel.”
“I am always fun, and you know it”. Dean quickly kissed him again, then re-arranged his clothing.
When he opened the door, Cas said, “I am sorry to disturb you, but we have a problem –“
“Yes, yes, I know, Apollo 13” Dean answered.
“I don’t understand that reference.”
“Of course you don’t. So while Crowley is busy pulling his pants up, why don’t you tell me what’s going on?”
The only answer to his corresponding grin was an unimpressed look.
“I told you it was nothing.”
“Crowley, a potential dam failure isn’t nothing. We’re lucky we managed to stop it.”
“If you say so” the demon replied lightly and Dean rolled his eyes.
“You’re just disappointed your lunch break was cut short.”
“What gave it away?” he asked, his hands settling on Dean’s hips.
“Oh, for God’s sake, can’t you two behave for five minutes?”
Dean sighed and once more stepped away from his husband. “Can you blame me, Sammy?”
The expression of their town’s sheriff seemed to suggest that he could and would indeed blame him for making him arrest them for indecent exposure. “The reporters are going to be here in just a few minutes, and…”
“Fine, fine, Samantha, don’t get your panties in a twist” Dean said. “We’re behaving, see?”
“Speak for yourself” Crowley said, his eyes changing to red because the bastard knew damn well it turned Dean on.
“Oh you –“
“Yes?” he asked innocently.
“You two are going to be the death of me” Sam sighed. “Aren’t you supposed to be getting back to school, anyway?”
Sadly, it was true, and so Dean kissed Crowley goodbye – maybe a bit more passionately than was appropriate, but what was the point if he couldn’t annoy his brother with his perfect marriage now and then? – and went on his way.
He only remembered it was Valentine’s Day when Charlie exclaimed, “Is that a hickey, Winchester? Have to say, I am not surprised, considering the date.”
Quite frankly, it was never a surprise when Dean showed up top work covered in hickeys, but one of the benefits of being the principal was that no one was there to judge him for it. “I just had lunch with my husband.”
She hummed. “Were the lunch, more likely.”
“Charlie Bradbury! Go look after your students!”
“Aye, aye boss”. She skipped past him with a cheeky grin on her face.
Sometimes, working with his closest friends wasn’t as much fun as Dean has always assumed it was going to be, but at the same time, he wouldn’t trade it for anything.
When he came home that evening, he was surprised when neither of the children made an appearance as soon as he opened the door. Normally, they cam running as soon as he showed up. “Emma? Gavin?” he called out.
Nothing. But there was soft classical music playing somewhere, and –
Oh. A trail of candles was leading from the front door towards the dining room.
Dean grinned.
This was going to be fun.
Crowley was awaiting him in the suit he had proposed to him ten years ago, the old softie.
“Hello there” Dean drew him into a kiss. “Are those your home-made burgers?”
“Yes. Since I have married someone with the appetite of a toddle, I have to bear the consequences.”
“Now, now, Mister, do you want to get lucky tonight or not?”
Crowley grinned, his eyes turning red again. “Oh, I do want to, and I will. You know I always get my way in the end.”
Dean just kissed him again as an answer then asked, “Where are the kids?”
“Cas took them to Charlie’s.”
Where they would no doubt get spoiled rotten. “Ah, so they helped?” Dean asked, indicating the roses and – was that a champagne fountain? On display.
Crowley hummed. “I originally planned the evening to include torturing our enemies, but Castiel assured me my esteemed brother-in-law wouldn’t have liked it.”
“He definitely wouldn’t have” Dean agreed. “I guess we’re stuck with torturing each other again.”
“Oh?” Crowley’s raised eyebrow was definitely a challenge, but Dean’s stomach was rumbling.
“Later, Casanova. I have to eat first.”
He sighed. “Serves me right for marrying a human with low stamina.”
“I am going to be showing off my stamina real soon” Dean grinned. “Just let me eat first.”
Crowley sighed again, but there was a sparkle in his eyes that Dean knew only too well.
“Now, what do you have to say about my stamina?” Dean sked quite some time later.
Crowley rolled over and looked down at him. “The night’s still young, Winchester.”
“I see” he complained, “Once the ring is on and you have two kids, the romance is gone. Is that how it is?”
“Says the man I just watched gobble down ten cheeseburgers against my better judgement.”
“It was five cheeseburgers, and you ate something too.”
“I snacked. There’s a difference.”
“If you say so, Peaches.” Dean hummed. “Mind, a little bit of torturing our enemies would have been nice…”
“Told him.”
“Well” Dean said with a grin, “I will just have to focus on torturing you instead.”
The next morning, Dean was woken up by a text from Charlie. Hey you two, I’ll be keeping the tow trouble makers until lunch time. God knows you need time to get it out of your system for a few hours at least.
“Seems like we have the morning for us” he announced just as Crowley materialized in front of him carrying a tablet.
“Is that so?”
“Oh yes” he happily accepted the offered breakfast. “Say, Crowley…”
“Yes?”
“Last night, you were completely unhinged. Every bit the scary demon people always assume you are. You downright scared me. Do me a favour?”
“Yes?”
Dean grinned. “As soon as I have finished these crepes… Do it again?”
It was a very happy Dean Winchester who all but skipped up the steps to Charlie’s house on this Saturday morning.
“Alright, I’m not even going to ask” Charlie said. “It’s pretty obvious someone had –“
“Dad!” The two children ran up to him and he quickly thank to his knees. “Did you have fun with Aunt Charlie?”
“Oh yes, and Uncle Cas stopped for dinner!”
Dean doubted that. In all the time he had known him, he had never seen him eat.
“I drew a picture. Look” Emma said proudly and held it out.
Huh. For a seven-year-old, she really did know how to draw her witch burnings. Dean showed himself duly impressed.
“And then we played car crash!” Gavin exclaimed, happily dancing around them.
There was a reason they loved staying with their Aunt Charlie. Uncle Sam usually tried to explain that car crashes were actually rather tragic and tended to cause people to die, which was little fun. Thankfully he and Aunt Sarah then came up with other games for them to play.
“Sounds like a lot of fun” he said, ruffling his hair.
“Yes! Did you and Father have fun too?” he asked.
“Oh, I bet” Charlie said.
“Yes we did” Dean said firmly. He spent his whole life being very very unapologetic about his marriage, he wasn’t going to feel ashamed about it in front of his children.
When he arrived home, he knew immediately something was amiss. One downside of marrying a demon was that their environment was magically affected by his moods, and the air around the house was cackling with static. If Crowley got any angrier, they’d have a storm on their hands.
Granted, that usually meant rather fun times for all of them, but the neighbours tended to complain eventually.
And so Dean left the children with Cas, who had returned from his day off, and went to see his husband.
He was currently on the phone, looking like he was ready to reach through it and strangle whoever he was talking to. “How dare you” he hissed. “I am perfectly capable of attracting –“
Dean thought it best to alert him to his presence since it usually calmed him down and he stepped up to him and gently laid a hand on his forearm.
Crowley’s eyes flashed up to him and he relaxed marginally. “You are lucky. My husband just came home. Do you want to talk to him about how I am holding him captive with my demon magic?”
Oh God. It was indeed lucky that he had returned. He quickly took the phone oust of Crowley’s hand. “Hello, Dean Winchester speaking.”
“Hello, Mr. Winchester.” He rolled his eyes. And he’d believed his husband sounded aggressively British when he wanted to. “My name is Arthur Ketch and I am with the Franklin Gazette. I was wondering if you were ready to comment on our upcoming story claiming that you were ensnared into marriage by –“
Seriously? Ensnared? He could only roll his eyes again. “Alright, listen, mister. I don’t care if you believe me or not, but I knew exactly who and what I was marrying hen I said yes. Yes, he’s a demon, and he can be a damn bastard when he wants to be. But he’s also romantic, kind and charming – again, when he wants to be. And he’s great damn good in bed to boot. He also tends to kill anyone who insults me or our children. I would tell you to be careful but frankly I am not concerned for your well-being at all. So now do me the favour and go to hell.” He hung up. “Is this going to be a problem?”
Crowley shrugged. “I was elected, so I have to assume people like me. And anyone who has seen us two together cannot possibly believe that you married me against your own free will.”
Damn right. And while they had been careful what information to release to the panic, Dean and the kids had figured prominently in Crowley’s successful re-election campaign. So really, this was just a storm in the water glass.
“I mean we can always deal with him if he annoys us too much…” his husband began hopefully.
“And have Sam bitch about it for the next ten years?”
He sighed. “Having the town sheriff for a brother-in-law is not the advantage I picture it to be.”
“So that’s why you proposed. You just wanted to use me to get to Sammy.”
“And what if I had?”
“Then, Crowley” Dean said carefully, reacting out and trailing a hand down his tie, “You need to be punished.” His voice dropped. “The children are with Cas.”
“Well then” Crowley drawled, “You may try to punish me although I doubt you’ll succeed.”
“Oh I have a lot of practice” he smirked.
Later that day, Dean was watching Crowley, Emma and Gavin play football in their yard, although he always thought that Crowley using his demon powers was unfair. The kids didn’t seem to mind, though.
Cas carried a fresh pitcher of lemonade out on the terrace. “Hey Cas. Come on, have a glass yourself.”
Their kind-of-butler-slash-kind-of-maid-slash-klind-of-nanny-slash-kind-of-roommate-slash-guy-whose-car-had-broken-down-in-town-one-day-and-who-had-apparently-randomly-decided-to-stay complied, although once again, Dean didn’t see him actually drink. The glass was empty after a few minutes, though.
“Your and Crowley’s Valentine celebration seems to have been… pleasant” Cas eventually said.
“Oh, hell yeah” Dean said, grinning at his husband, “It was.”
Alright, if he was being honest, so were most of their nights – and days – but that didn’t mean some couldn’t be more special than others now, could it?

The Woods - Feedback
The feedback from this piece was focused around several specific sections that detracted from the flow of the piece. The seventh paragraph down needed more specific focus on the woods rather than moving back into a secondary school setting, so I attempted to alter my language to describe the way that the townsfolk act in the woods rather than moving away from the woods setting. The ending paragraphs also needed some editing with the pacing, so I added more detail to the POV character’s breakdown and tried to space out the final paragraphs so the ending was less abrupt. I also fixed a few sentences that the class flagged individually as reading clumsily or just not quite working with the main voice of the story.
This time of night, the woods are normally silent, dark, and empty, with only the shadows of the trees for company. I like taking walks out here normally. It makes me feel like the rest of the world doesn’t exist, and I’m free to walk wherever I want; however I want. Squirrels don’t have the same judgemental gaze as most people in this town, except for the really big ones, and even they can’t call you a fuck-up or tell your parents that you need more therapy because you’re talking to squirrels.
The woods are, unfortunately, not quiet and dark tonight. It feels like every sixteen to twenty-year-old in a surrounding ten-mile radius is here; every tree you pass there’s another gaggle of tipsy people lurking behind it. It’s a bit frightening, seeing this many people packed into the space. The woods are supposed to be quiet and dark. They’re bringing in the light, the sound, the heat. I’m not entirely sure I mind it though. Things always seem more magical by firelight. Maybe it’s the beer. I don’t know.
Parties in small towns like this are always kind of uncomfortable, because you either know everyone uncomfortably well (like since kindergarten I’ve-seen-you-without-pants well), or you end up realising that there are whole groups of people in your town that you’ve never met, and feeling secretly excluded even though they seem like the most boring people on earth.
I take another sip of the beer in my hand – red solo cups, what a cliché – and wince at the taste. The only booze worth drinking is the kind that doesn’t let you taste it, and beer definitely did not get the memo. Either that, or someone purposefully chose this flavour, in which case, I give up entirely. The only reason everyone here is drinking it is because they want to get pissed, but fast and cheap. I’m not sure I fit into the category, but I could definitely do with a little more oblivion and a little less rational thought tonight.
The air is freezing – I should be shivering, but the adrenaline and the movement are enough to convince my body to ignore it. Instead, I feel sort of supercharged, like I’ve had way too much expresso. Hopefully, this time I won’t puke. Coffee induced puke always seems to be a hundred times worse than the usual, I’m still not sure why. Maybe it’s the adrenaline. Maybe I’m just drinking coffee wrong.
George and Andrew are huddled on the other side of the fire, their heads pressed close together. They aren’t kissing, exactly, but somehow it seems more intimate than that, like they’re sharing breaths. It always makes me feel a little jealous looking at them together – they’re the kind of couple that make you feel bad just by how close they are, and they aren’t even doing it on purpose. They’re just doing what they’d do if you weren’t there to see it. I don’t know if I even want a partner that’s that close, it almost feels like my life would be invaded rather than enhanced.
I don’t really do relationships that well. Introverted, the therapist said. The sheer number of people here would be enough to freak me out on a normal day. Under the thick canopy of trees, it feels like we’ve been snatched out of our normal settings and thrown into somewhere entirely new. I see these people every day around town, but here they seem like different people. I feel like I’m getting a snapshot into each of their lives without permission. I see most of these people every day in the town, but I don’t see them existing without the pressure of being seen. I didn’t ask to be the witness to this strange release in pressure, but I can’t escape it.
Despite all that, standing here, bolstered by my watery beer and the free dinner my mom made (tacos!), I almost feel like I’m supposed to be here. Like I’m not some kind of young adult sleeper agent; a normal person in every way, just very slightly off, like all the proportions are very slightly wrong and I’m just waiting for someone to notice. I’ve never been the kind of person who gets drunk a lot, but maybe I should start. I feel so calm, but not in the kind of way I get when I take my anxiety meds, where it feels like the world is slightly dulled and blurred. It feels like there’s more colour around me; the bright flicker of the fire, so many leaves; brown and orange and red. Is this what it feels like to be a functioning person?
Wow. I’ve been missing out.
And then I see him, standing innocently on the other side of the bonfire. His face is crinkled with laughter, his arms thrown out to the sides. And everything starts to fragment and shatter, my fingers clenching and shaking around the cup, my feet rooted to the spot -am I gonna be sick? Please, please don’t let me-. My breaths are short and sharp; I can feel my heart pounding. The wonderful feeling of belonging is evaporating fast – there are eyes on my back, curious stares that itch against my skin.
What’s wrong with her?
I risk a glance back up, and Cam is staring back at me, his apparently hilarious conversation forgotten in the midst of my breakdown. The sight of his pity ignites a rare flame of anger in me, and the panicky breathing stops as quickly as it started. No way does some stupid ex get to ruin my calm. I built it. I earned it. A smile claws its way onto my face, forced and much too wide, but it’s enough for me. He has no reason to keep looking. I follow him with my eyes as he turns back to his friend, taking a sip from his dumb, cliched solo cup. Turning away seems easy, but I keep feeling his eyes on my back as I retreat.
I take a seat by the fire, my legs slightly wobbly, the stupid cup of beer still clenched in my right hand. Mechanically, I take another sip, wincing at the taste. I should really put it down somewhere, or I’m going to end up drinking the whole thing. I keep forgetting how awful it is. Around me, before me, behind me, people are dancing. Their feet are light against the forest floor, their voices are loud and rise up through the canopy of leaves above. My heart is still thumping, but it seems quieter now, blending with the music rather than sending me spiralling out of tune.
I tilt my head back to look up at the sky. Velvet studded with diamonds.
Take a deep breath and keep going.

21/01/20 Visitors in Vancouver
On 16th Jan we had a super early start, Sam driving 2h30 over the saddle road back to Kona. It all took longer than we'd hoped, so were rushing manically to fill up with fuel and wash all the ash of the white white car. Luckily the hire car company was efficient and everything went smoothly so we had plenty of time in the airport to eat breakfast and chill out before our flight. Another silly short flight back across to Honolulu, then several hours hanging out in the airport there, eating apple pie and watching our flight out get later and later. Around 4:30pm we finally took off, had a fairly unpleasant flight for no particular reason. Sam bought a meal deal but Joey woke up 2 minutes too late to ask for anything and was sad about it. We sat next to a friendly Canadian woman who talked a lot about Harry and Meghan. Finally landed in Vancouver, got our bags and ran to the skytrain platform, arriving 2 minutes after the last train of the night had left for the city. Went back to the terminal and got a taxi up to North Vancouver, and around 1:30am were welcomed in to a gorgeous house by lovely Jane and her lovely Labrador Maverick.
Jane, Iain, Hannah and Lucas live in a lovely house in the super smart Edgemont village area. They've spent the last 2 years renovating and the house looks unrecognisable from the "before” photos. They're planning to put it on the market in a few months time, and we learned a lot about the scary house prices and even scarier realtor fees in the area. When we arrived there was snow on the ground, which is surprisingly unusual for Vancouver, and the rest of Canada seems to find this hilarious. The snow had however given way to rain, so much of our stay involved finding indoorsy things to do to hide from the weather.
On Friday (17th) we had a super lazy morning, massively relishing in all the things a lovely family home has to offer, like a bed and a shower and stocked cupboards. We were completely spoiled with food and taxi services and laundry services and dog cuddles and budgie watching, which made it quite tricky to ever want to go out and do anything else. Around lunchtime Iain drove us to the Pemberton neighbourhood to check out a few ski shops - we have worked out the ski rental costs for the Canada leg of our trip will definitely be more than just buying some - but unfortunately at this point in the season there aren't a whole bunch of second hand skis around in the shops. We checked out a variety of last season's skis on offer, and had some useful chats with shop staff to narrow down what we're looking for. Empty handed, we went home for lunch and then in the afternoon Helen and her lovely Boxer came over for a natter. Later in the evening Jane, Hannah, Lucas, Sam and Joey went to the Red Lion pub for dinner and live jazz, all very delightful. Hannah and Lucas are going to Japan in a few months so we showered them with recommendations.
The next morning Jane drove us down to another ski shop and Joey very excitedly bought a pair of Salomon QSD Lumen skis. They'll fit the bindings and boots to them in the store so can't take them home yet, but was very exciting! Also we suspect we may have got a fairly fat discount because the guy in the shop told us one price but when he rang them up it was $100 higher, he just looked a bit awkward and overtyped the price. Win. With a bit of time to kill, the three of us wandered round Lonsdale Quay Market, and bought and ate a divine loaf of hot apricot bread which had been pulled out of the oven moments before. We went to Helen's apartment to play with the dog and chat to the humans, and Helen very kindly gave us free tickets to the Vancouver Lookout and the Aquarium, and put us on the guest list for Capilano Bridge. What a hero. After a good catch up and lots of ski and travel chat, we wandered back to Lonsdale Quay, hoping to go ice skating but the rink was closed. We had pints of locally brewed beer at the Tap and Barrel, and then back to the covered market for lunch. Caught a bus home, then fairly quickly headed out again to Vancouver Downtown (crossing the Iron Gate bridge on our bus). We visited a few more ski shops, one of which had a promising array of used skis but on closer inspection were pretty battered. Struggling a little bit as there are loads of skis that are not what Sam wants, and ones the right size and shape are all super pricey. No time to feel disheartened, we made our way to Rogers Arena for a Vancouver Canucks ice hockey game. They were celebrating Chinese New Year, and we were given free wontons and pork buns which Sam ate, also accidentally eating the paper the pork bun was wrapped in. We got red lucky envelopes with Canucks badges in, and bought a bucket of endless popcorn. This needed filling after the first 20 minutes, then we slowed down significantly as unlimited popcorn needs to be balanced with unlimited drinks which we did not have. The game itself was exciting, Canucks won conclusively 4:1, and we were entertained by the difference in reaction between Canucks scoring and San Jose Sharks scoring. There were a couple of fights and a huge number of snapped hockey sticks, which players left on the ice when they subbed out. The atmosphere was great, and in contrast to watching sport in the UK there was not a single moment where there wasn't something to watch. Every small pause in the game was filled with music, entertainers, kiss-cam, dance-cam, singalongs or chanting, and a few times it was hard to even notice that the game had restarted. In one of the breaks they threw/cannoned t-shirts out to the crowd and Sam caught one! v exciting. Buzzing, we caught the bus home. We're starting to get used to the persistent herbal smell downtown - weed is legal here and it's clearly popular.
On Sunday we had another luxurious lie-in, then caught the bus to downtown and went up the Lookout tower. Great views (and good timing, because for much of our stay the tower has been in the cloud). From this point in the city centre you can see the three local ski mountains - Seymour, Grouse, and Cypress. Lucky locals. We caught the bus down to Granville Island area, popping to a few more ski shops (with no luck) before browsing the shops and galleries on the artsy island. We went in a photography gallery with a small simple cartoon V sketch of a bird, selling for several hundred dollars. Had lunch in the indoor food market, chatting to a friendly Australian couple sharing our table. Headed home, then out to Park Royal area in West Van for happy hour and dinner with Jane's friend who is super lovely. It stopped raining briefly so we went for a walk along the seafront, great views over to the lights of the city, but no otters or sealions sadly.
Monday was a busy day, Jane drove us down to Lonsdale Quay via the ski shop to drop off one of Joey's boots. We caught the sea bus across the Burrard Inlet to Waterside, then went for a rainy wander through Gastown, the trendy downtown area packed with old buildings, brewery pubs, and a steam driven clock. We hid from the rain in a souvenir store, contemplating buying more clothes as we've heard they've had temperatures down to -30deg up in Whistler in the last week or so. Didn't though, hopefully it'll be warmer when we're there. Bus to Stanley park, a huge and wonderfully wild park with impressive colourful wood carved totem poles and fluffy black squirrels. Visited the aquarium, where everything seemed to be supersized - giant Steller's sealions, playful sea otters, and plenty of other wriggly things. Inevitably time made fools of us, but we managed to cram in a Flyover Canada experience - a simulator which takes you through a 3d movie of Canada's landscapes, complete with smells and mist. Joey thought it was weird that they made it smell like whiskey at the beginning, but then realised that might have been the couple sitting next to her. We caught the bus back to Edgemont and bought some food as we'd offered to cook for everyone as it's our last night. Dropped food off at home and power walked up to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Helen had put us on the guest list but we hadn't really got an appreciation of the scale of it and we definitely had not left enough time. The park is in a beautiful fir forest dissected by the huge rocky canyon with the Capilano river at the bottom. The suspension bridge over the river has long been a tourist attraction, and the surrounding park has wooden walkways including a network of bridges up in the forest canopy, and a dramatic cliffside walk. Every inch of it has been covered in fairy lights and gorgeous illuminations, which is why we came after dark, and the whole effect is awesome. Sam remembered coming here before, but in the daytime in summer it all looked fairly different. We rushed round soaking it all in, then headed home to cook. Dinner went down well, and Jane had made a delish strawberry cheesecake to polish it off.
Tuesday the 21st we caught the sea bus and sky train to the airport then had a medium sized faff with getting a car with winter tyres, despite that being what we booked months ago. Sorted it in the end, paying a bit extra (but not as much as it should have been) to upgrade to a 4x4 which will help us on the mountain roads and also to fit skis in the back. Then we drove out to East Vancouver to meet a guy selling some Sam-appropriate skis on Craigslist. This went exceptionally well, not only did he take an offer on the skis but he also had a giant (Sam head size) helmet and two pairs of poles, so in one swoop we went from having a hefty shopping list to being ready to hit the slopes in the morning. Iain no longer skis so has kindly bequeathed his helmet to Joey. We drove back to the house and loaded up the car (Jane had collected Joey's skis from the shop). Had to google how to open the car boot as it has a secret button hidden in the rear light. Said our thankyous and goodbyes then drove up to Whistler, stopping at Squamish on the way to stock up on food. Arrived at the Whistler Lodge Hostel before it got particularly dark, and immediately settled in playing pool and chatting to skiers from all over.

The Woods
Write a piece which remains in the same setting while putting your character through a range of emotions. Try to disclose different things about your character through the way that they see the setting.
This time of night, the woods are normally dead silent, dark, and empty, with only the shadows of the trees for company.
Things always seem more magical by firelight, like the orange flicker has some kind of imbued charge to it.
Somehow the intense yet distant way that you know someone in secondary school isn’t enough to form any kind of lasting relationship or trust, so every movement I make is at least a little bit calculated.
Despite all that, standing here, bolstered by my watery beer and the free dinner my mom made (tacos!), I almost feel like I’m supposed to be here. Like I’m not some kind of young adult sleeper agent; a normal person in every way, just very slightly off, like my legs are slightly too long, or my eyes too close together.
And everything starts to fragment and shatter, my fingers clenching and shaking around the cup, my feet rooted to the spot. (am I gonna be sick? Please, please don’t let me-) My breaths are short and sharp; I can feel my heart pounding. The wonderful feeling of belonging is evaporating fast – there are eyes on my back, curious stares that itch against my skin.
What’s wrong with her?
I risk a glance back up, and Cam is staring back at me, his apparently hilarious conversation forgotten in the wake of my breakdown. The sight of his pity ignites a rare piece of anger in me, and the panicky breathing stops as quickly as it started. No way does some stupid ex get to ruin my calm.
I take a seat by the fire, my legs slightly wobbly, the stupid cup of beer still clenched in my right hand. Around me, before me, behind me, people are dancing. Their feet are light against the forest floor, their voices are loud and rise up through the canopy of leaves above.
I tilt my head back to look up at the sky. Velvet studded with diamonds.
Take a deep breath and keep going.
