Fire and Drought

Drought left the forest vulnerable to fire.

Still-living trees rise up from soot-black roots, a testament to the fire-resistant bark of the redwoods.

The silhouettes of former redwoods stand among those that still live, and the forest is made more beautiful by their company.

Nature: Redwood Forests

The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.

Our Drive to the Redwoods

The oaks were slowly replaced by redwoods as we drove.

The huge stumps left behind by the loggers a century ago hint at how awe-inspiring some sequoias were. The largest living trees are deeper in the park.
