hi!! i hope you don’t mind me asking this but i recently read harleen (specifically issue 1) and wondered if you might know of any other comics that have an outsider perspective of batjokes? thanks !!
I don't mind at all, anon! I also enjoy in-universe outside perspectives on Batman and Joker's relationship (and I've included quite a bit of it in fic). Harleen #1 does have a pretty great one:
Tumblr media
The most common commentary on Batman and Joker from other characters is the ol' "why haven't you killed him yet?!" but that reflects more frustration than any inkling of the connection between Gotham's most famous nemeses. So with the help of @distort-opia, I wrangled panels from a couple dozen comics that show characters having a better (even if incomplete) understanding of what the heck is going on there.
Many of these may already be familiar if you've been around batjokes fandom long enough. Regardless, spoilers abound!
I've ordered these (mostly) in cover date order.
June 1996 - The Batman Chronicles #5
Tumblr media
This is a flashback that takes place shortly after The Killing Joke. Barbara is understandably bitter about being fridged, and it's clear that officers who saw Batman and Joker laughing together have spread the word, because heyyyyy wtf?
October 1996 - Catwoman (1993) #38
Tumblr media
Selina knows releasing other rogues is a good distraction; Batman is always more concerned about Joker than her.
May 1997 - Batman: Batgirl
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before this, Joker was firing his gun willy-nilly, hitting his own men, and he hit Batman accidentally. Barbara doesn't seem to think he fully understands the consequences of killing Batman, especially given the surprise he shows when Batman goes down.
Five years later, this story gets retold (with a worse rendition of Joker's fantastic oufit):
July 2002 - DC First: Batgirl/Joker
Tumblr media
In this version, Barbara more actively realizes she needs to get at Joker by laughing at him, because he's caught up in a reality where Batman is the only other real person. (Not sure if this is the first comic to posit that idea, but it has shown up elsewhere.)
February 1999 - Catwoman (1993) #65
Tumblr media
Joker has been terrorizing Catwoman for Batman-related reasons for a few issues, and she knows that saying she's killed Batman will devastate him. (You know, the more stories like this I see, the more I see Tom King actually didn't have too far a walk to jokerize Selina.)
August 2001 - Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight (1989) #144
Tumblr media
Alfred has noticed that Joker's presence affects Bruce's behavior.
September 2003 - Batman: Gotham Knights #43
Tumblr media
This take from Barbara is set before TKJ and meant to foreshadow (aftershadow?) it. Here she shows a better understanding of Batman and Joker's relationship than Bruce does.
October 2003 - Outsiders (2003) #3
Tumblr media
Luthor knows just how to get under Joker's skin.
March 2011 - Streets of Gotham #19
Tumblr media
Hush also knows how to get under Joker's skin.
March 2011 - Gotham City Sirens #19
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Selina and Harley are thinking more about themselves here, but it's not hard to connect the dots. Joker is part of the criminal morass that Bruce is focused on fighting, and Joker's focus is constantly on how to best the Batman.
November 2011 - Batman: Noël
Tumblr media
Bruce has been told that Catwoman has information about the Joker's whereabouts. Note that Selina isn't saying she's aware that Joker is up to something right now; she implies that Batman is always thinking about Joker. It's a fact she can bank on.
May 2013 - Injustice: Gods Among Us #4 (digital release #11)
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most infamous example. This is related to the "why won't you kill him?" trope, but Clark's accusation takes it further by directly saying it's because Bruce loves fighting Joker more than he loves his friends and family.
Clark says something similar about Joker being Bruce's playmate in another comic:
August 2014 - Adventures of Superman (2013) #14 (digital release #41
Tumblr media
Even outside of the Injustice universe, Clark knows Bruce's priorities are out of whack when it comes to Joker.
January 2013 - Catwoman (2011) #14
Tumblr media
Selina just stating the obvious here, again after a now-faceless Joker has tormented her for Batman-related reasons for a couple issues.
April 2016 - Batman (2011) #49
Tumblr media
Heartbreaking example from Alfred here. He watched Bruce's obsessiveness and understood that Bruce, consciously or subconsciously, saw dying with Joker as his destiny. He probably suspects that Joker didn't really die either and knows they're going to end up back on the same track.
April 2016 - Batman: Europa #4
Tumblr media
These panels sum up Europa. Bane, always looking for fresh ways to break the Bat, saw Joker as a clear catalyst (even if he had to make up a convoluted plot to make Batman see it first).
January 2017 - All-Star Batman #4 (backer)
Tumblr media
Duke is pretty much repeating Bruce's soliloquy from Death of the Family here, so he's not saying anything Bruce doesn't really know, but he doesn't know that Bruce knows. lol Interestingly, this happens before Dark Days: The Casting, in which Duke watches Joker demonstrate his love in a more positive way by trying to stop Bruce from blundering into everything that happens in Dark Nights: Metal and beyond.
January 2018 - Batman: White Knight #2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
White Knight is problematic from a batjokes standpoint (and other standpoints!) but poor Harley presents another infamous outsider perspective here.
October 2018 - Harley/Gossamer Special
Tumblr media
She's right and right to say it!
August 2020 - Birds of Prey (2020)
Tumblr media
This take is interesting in how it posits that Joker already felt unfulfilled by Batman by the time he met Harley and that she was kind of a rebound.
August 2020 - The Joker 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular
Tumblr media
This is from "The Last Smile," in which Harley reveals Joker's recurring nightmare about Batman mocking him as he's put to death. Joker didn't picture Harley appearing to save him, but perhaps he felt like Batman's respect was "saving" him all the long.
September 2020 - Batgirl (2016) #47
Tumblr media
Nooooo! That's the thing he's sensitive about!
April 2021 - Batman/Catwoman #3
Tumblr media
I have… a lot of thoughts about Batman/Catwoman, few positive, but if you can push past the muddling storytelling technique (and the batcat if that's not your thing), Selina has a lot to say about Bruce and Joker's relationship, like in this and the following example.
May 2021 - Batman/Catwoman #4
Tumblr media
Catwoman describes how Batman treats all his rogues and then equates that with how he treats his lovers. How much do you know, Selina? Who is Joker's main competition?? It's Harvey, isn't it?!
May 2022 - Detective Comics (2016) #1058 (backer)
Tumblr media
Even newbie F-level antagonists like The Forgotten know what's up!
Well, that was a lengthy but surely not exhaustive account of what other DC characters think about the vibes between the Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime. (May they be bewildered for years to come!) I hope you spotted some comics that caught your interest, anon.

I somehow completely forgot today was the day, but today is, in fact, Archie Sonic's 30th anniversary. (TKP also turns 8 in a few days)
Well... maybe today's the day? The main Sonic wikis list November 24th, 1992 as the release date for issue #0 of the original pilot miniseries, while Sonic Retro lists November 4th as the date based on an ancient news group post about comic releases from that week, and Wikipedia lists November 22nd, which was... a Sunday? And of course the cover date is way off and says it was for February 1993. Whatever! It was 30 years ago this month, is the point. So I should say something
While this blog has become sort of a go-to source for learning about the many weird and bad parts of the series, Archie Sonic will always mean a lot to me. It was the first comic book I started actively following as a kid, and it was what really introduced me to the world and characters of Sonic. I might have joined during one of the worst eras of the series, but the expansive mythos that had been built up over the prior decade really grabbed me. I'd pore over Penders' bullshit character bios and take them as gospel. I'd trace over panels to make Shrinky Dinks. For a time I cherished the climactic 10th anniversary issue, #125, as my prized possession, keeping it in my parents' fireproof box meant more for things like, you know, the deed to our house. I fell out of following it in middle school, but it was pretty crucial in shaping my tastes. I can easily trace a direct line from the stuff I'm working on now back to Archie Sonic
It's been almost six years now since the series was canceled. At the time it was hard to believe this was even possible. Archie Sonic was an institution. Everything else came and went, but "those weird Sonic comics with their own continuity that were still using the SatAM characters" were eternal. At this point I've made peace with it, in no small part due to the existence of the IDW series. But even if they're gone and never coming back (continually delayed projects from a certain writer notwithstanding), they're definitely not forgotten. I still see people drawing fanart, sharing individual moments, coming up with AUs to fix things that didn't work, redesigning the cast to fit in with Sega's Sonic. And I'd be remiss not to mention that we just got the first mainline Sonic game ever written by an Archie Sonic writer. A game that has some surprising parallels with certain pre-reboot Archie material, intentional or not. (Given the lawsuits and Sonic Team's disinterest in Archie, I'm guessing "not," but it's certainly there.) The spirit of that series lives on in small ways, even if characters like Sally and Rotor are currently relegated to fanon
Archie Sonic remains one of the largest branches of the franchise, rivaled in scope only by the games themselves. And people are still coming back to it, either as returning readers or as new fans discovering it for the first time. I'm happy to have been a small part of that

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … February 27

6th Century BC – Sappho, Greek lyric poet, born. Of course, this is another one of those dates that is arbitrary. Sappho was the greatest of all the early Greek lyric poets, born on the island of Lesbos. Her birth was sometime between 630 and 612 BC, and it is said that she died around 570 BC, but little is known for certain about her life. The bulk of her poetry, which was well-known and greatly admired throughout antiquity, has been lost, but her immense reputation has endured through surviving fragments. She was called "the Tenth Muse" by no less than Plato.
Sappho's poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and both genders. The word lesbian derives from the name of the island of her birth, Lesbos, while her name is also the origin of the word sapphic; neither word was applied to female homosexuality until the nineteenth century.
The female narrators of many of her poems speak of infatuations and love (sometimes requited, sometimes not) for various females, but descriptions of physical acts between women are few and subject to debate. Whether these poems are meant to be autobiographical is not known, although elements of other parts of Sappho's life do make appearances in her work, and it would be compatible with her style to have these intimate encounters expressed poetically, as well. Her homoerotica should be placed in the context of the seventh century (BC).
A tradition going back at least to Menander suggested that Sappho killed herself by jumping off the Leucadian cliffs for love of Phaon, a ferryman. This is regarded as unhistorical by modern scholars, perhaps invented by the comic poets as a sort of ironic "revenge of the gods." or the legend may have resulted in part from a desire to assert Sappho as heterosexual.

1905 – One of the most infamous hateful racist homophobes and general misanthropes Charley Eugene Johns was born on this date.(d.1990). Johns was an American politician and the thirty-second governor of Florida from 1953 to 1955. Why cover Johns? Because most of us don't know this history and it's important to know what happened so it doesn't happen again.
Johns is most remembered for his support and chairmanship of the infamous Florida Legislative Investigation Committee, nicknamed the "Johns Committee" because of Johns' chairmanship. This committee participated in the Red Scare and Lavender scare by investigating communists, homosexuals, and civil rights advocates among the students and faculty of Florida's university system. They were responsible for revoking teachers' certificates and firing university professors. By 1963, the committee had forced the dismissal or resignation of over 100 professors and deans at the University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of South Florida. One professor attempted suicide after being investigated by the committee.
The state legislature ended funding for the committee in 1964 after it released a report called Homosexuality and Citizenship in Florida, which infamously became known as the "Purple Pamphlet". Its many photographs depicting homosexual acts outraged legislators and reportedly copies of the report were being sold as pornography in New York City.
In 2005, UF Today, an alumni publication of the University of Florida, included Johns in a list of 81 "outstanding" UF alumni. Johns attended UF only for a few months and did not graduate. The editor apologized for the error, and the alumni association said that including him was a mistake.

1927 – James Leo Herlihy was born on this date (d.1993). Herlihy wrote "Midnight Cowboy" and "Season of the Witch." Born in Detroit, Michigan, Herlihy attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina, a small, experimental institution whose faculty included Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Willem de Kooning, and other innovative figures in the arts. Herlihy studied art, music, and literature.
Like his close friend and mentor Tennessee Williams, Herlihy was a gay author whose works delved into taboo subjects and broke new ground for what was acceptable to major publishers. His 1958 play Blue Denim confronted teenage sexuality and abortion and was praised in a newspaper column by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Along with Williams, Herlihy became part of a circle of friends and lovers in Key West- mostly gay writers and "theater people"- that included James Kirkwood Jr., co-writer of A Chorus Line and author of cult novels and plays including There Must Be a Pony!; Evan Rhodes, the author of The Prince of Central Park; one-time singer and agent Dick Duane, to whom Herlihy dedicated two of his finest novels, All Fall Down and Midnight Cowboy; and to a lesser extent, visiting writers like Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. Author Christopher Isherwood paints the scene in an entry from his diary in August 1959: "(Broadway producer Walter) Starcke came by, en route for Japan and round the world . . . 'Now I live by grace,' says Starcke. 'I live every hour of every day to its fullest.' Actually he is in Key West, dealing in real estate and having parties with Herlihy and his friend which sometimes go on until morning. Lots of sex."
Herlihy's novels often feature protagonists living outside mainstream American culture, like Joe Buck, the male prostitute in Midnight Cowboy and Witch Gliz, the female teenage runaway in Season of the Witch. He wrote about aspects of the Gay subculture in urban America in much of his fiction. Most of his books are now out of print, although they were very popular at the time of their publication.
Herlihy committed suicide, aged 66, by taking an overdose of sleeping pills in Los Angeles.

1932 – Dame Elizabeth Taylor, DBE (d.2011) was a British-American actress. From her early years as a child star with MGM, she became one of the great screen actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age. As one of the world's most famous film stars, Taylor was recognized for her acting ability and for her glamorous lifestyle, beauty and distinctive violet eyes.
National Velvet (1944) was Taylor's first success, and she starred in Father of the Bride (1950), A Place in the Sun (1951), Giant (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959). She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for BUtterfield 8 (1960), played the title role in Cleopatra (1963), and married her co-star Richard Burton. They appeared together in 11 films, including Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), for which Taylor won a second Academy Award. Her much publicized personal life included eight marriages (twice to Burton) and several life-threatening illnesses.
Taylor devoted consistent and generous humanitarian time, advocacy efforts, and funding to HIV and AIDS-related projects and charities, helping to raise more than $270 million for the cause. She was one of the first celebrities and public personalities to do so at a time when few acknowledged the disease, organizing and hosting the first AIDS fundraiser in 1984, to benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles.
Taylor was cofounder of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) with Dr. Michael Gottlieb and Dr. Mathilde Krim in 1985. Her longtime friend and former co-star Rock Hudson had disclosed having AIDS and died of it that year. She also founded the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) in 1993, created to provide critically needed support services for people with HIV/AIDS. For example, in 2006 Taylor commissioned a 37-foot (11 m) "Care Van" equipped with examination tables and xray equipment, the New Orleans donation made by her Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation and Macy's. That year, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, she also donated US$40,000 to the NO/AIDS Task Force, a non-profit organization serving the community of those affected by HIV/AIDS in and around New Orleans.Taylor was honored with a special Academy Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in 1992 for her HIV/AIDS humanitarian work. Speaking of that work, former President Bill Clinton said at her death on March 23, 2011, "Elizabeth's legacy will live on in many people around the world whose lives will be longer and better because of her work and the ongoing efforts of those she inspired."

1971 – Derren Brown is an English illusionist, mentalist, painter, writer and sceptic. He is known for his appearances in television specials, stage productions, photographic memory, and British television series such as Trick of the Mind and Trick or Treat.
After studying German and Law at the University of Bristol, Derren Brown started out as a traditional conjurer specialising in close magic before moving into stage hypnotism and eventually into television on Channel 4, where he has produced several controversial series using a combination of 'magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'.
Using his knowledge and skill he appears to be able to predict and influence people's thoughts with subtle suggestion, manipulate the decision making process and read the subtle physical signs or body language that indicate what a person is thinking. His sometimes disturbing shows have included Derren Brown's Mind Control, Russian Roulette, Seance, Messiah and The Heist. He often uses his skills to debunk religous, supernatural and paranormal beliefs. He has written several books on magic and tricks of the mind and regularly takes his show on tour.
Brown had been in the spotlight for several years before revealing himself to be gay in an interview in a Sunday newspaper supplement in September 2007. In an interview with the Radio Times in 2011 Brown talked more about his sexuality, stating that he is blissfully happy in a relationship. He said,
"I spent a lot of time thinking about me and working on what I wanted to be before I came into a relationship. In some ways, it's bad because you come into relationship quite late without a lot of experience and you have a lot to learn. But that can also be exciting. Certainly, it's lovely to have somebody love you and it's lovely to love someone else."

1975 – The American screenwriter and director Christopher (Beau) Landon was born today. Best known as the writer of 2007 film Disturbia and as the son of filmmaker Michael Landon.
Most of Landon's films deal with LGBT themes and issues, including $30, one of five components in Boys Life 3, a collection of short films dealing with issues faced by gays, and a spec script about the relationship between a straight man and a gay man. More recently, he has written the screenplays of the 2007 films Blood and Chocolate, The Flock and the acclaimed Disturbia. Disturbia was one of his spec scripts which was brought to Montecito Pictures and subsequently DreamWorks Pictures, and went on to become No. 1 in cinemas upon its release. Since then he has worked on The Lesson, a film for DreamWorks, and the 2007 television series Dirty Sexy Money, his first television project, eager to expand his repertoire. He has also worked on the screenplay of the film adaption of Lisa McMann's young adult novel Wake. He has recently been achieving some success as a writer on the Paranormal Activiy franchise.
Landon came out as gay in 1999 having only written the script of Another Day in Paradise, unafraid of his sexuality harming his career potential. He was aware that homophobia may have harmed his potential in the industry. "I may fall off some list because of my sexuality. But if that happens, then I really don't want to be on that list anyway," he said, speaking of homophobia in Hollywood and the film industry.
He says that growing up he was labeled a faggot by peers at his high school. His mother, a Christian, initially hesitated to accept his sexuality, but he told her, "I don't even know if I believe in God, but if I do, he gave you a gay son so that you can start confronting some of these issues and get yourself out of the box you've placed yourself in for so long." His stepmother, Cindy Clerico, his father's next wife, told him that both she and his father always suspected he was gay.
Tumblr media
Some rather indiscreet pics which have surfaced on the internet reveal that, like his father, he is very well-hung.

2017 – When We Rise, an ABC mini-series, premiers on this day.  It was a docudrama miniseries about LGBT rights, created by Dustin Lance Black. The 45-year saga tells the evolving history of the modern gay rights movement, starting just after the Stonewall riots in 1969.

Ten 2023 Anticipated Books
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New year, new books. Here's a mix of ten Asian titles I'm looking forward to. (Of course, release dates/cover art can and do shift.)
JANUARY
Is Love the Answer? by Isaki Uta
Isaki is one of my favorite Japanese artists. Over the last few years more English language publishers have also been taking notice of her work. This is a standalone coming of age comic with an aromatic asexual protagonist. From Kodansha USA.
FEBRUARY
At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender: Life Lessons From a 50 year-old After Two Decades of Self-Discovery by Arai Shou
This is one autobiographical Japanese comic worth mention as there’s little out there in English to compare. Besides digital release first, it will also appear in print later in the year. Also to note the US arm of publisher Tokyopop came back into English language publishing a few years ago. Besides some other endeavors particularly carving itself a niche in LGBTQ+ comics. Which if great, unless you have the long memory like me that also makes it a bit frustrating because of the company's frankly bad history.
JUNE
River's Edge by Okazaki Kyoko
This may be a familiar title because of the live action adaptation. Or Okazaki’s name as a phenome of visceral comics in the 1980s and 90s before an unfortunate car accident sidelined her career. It’s been a bit of a drought too since previous English editions of her work like Helter Skelter or Pink nearly ten years ago. This comic from 1993 has a cast of high schoolers and their screwed up lives.
Until I Love Myself: The Journey of a Nonbinary Manga Artist by Pesuyama Poppy
Another special two volume autobiography in comic form from a Japanese nonbinary artist. From Viz Media.
The Surviving Sky by Krikita H. Rao
An epic lush eco SFF novel featuring solarpunk, yogic philosophy, and a stormy marriage for it’s two 30s-40s aged bi/pan protagonists where civilization is also on the line.
AUGUST
Guardian: Zhen Hun by Priest
Danmei novels appearing in English continue strong. This mysterious Chinese fantasy series around the head of special investigation unit tasked with unusual cases and an enigmatic university professor was the basis for a popular (and persevering under censorship challenges) live-action series in 2018. From Seven Seas.
They Were 11! by Hagio Moto
A classic sci-fi comic from the 1970s with some themes around gender and attraction influenced by the novel The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. I’ve reviewed the previous English edition from back in the 90s. Publisher Denpa is small operation so it’s taken some extra time but a new deluxe edition with the sequel is coming.
TBA
Kitchen of Witch Hat by Hiromi Sato and Shirahama Kamome
The Witch Hat Atelier series is beloved in many languages and garnered awards. This ongoing spin-off comic series is another treat, literally as Qifrey and Olruggio get up to cooking. From Kodansha USA.
Savage Alice by Hwang Jungeun
There’s been big trends for South Korean literature over the last few years. This 2013 novel with drag queen in a Hedwig vein between the big city of Seoul and a smaller hometown will be translated to English by Janet Hong.
Star Clock Liddell by Uchida Yoshimi
Did someone say older philosophical Japanese girls’ comics? Indie publisher Glacier Bay Books has licensed this 1980s haunting three volume comic series.

Disney VHS Minutiae: 1992 Stuff
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you're my age, and are American, you likely saw these warnings before Disney films when popping in the VHS of a movie, show, cartoon compilation or some kind of half-hour program...
Where and when did they first debut?
There's been some light debate around that within Disney VHS collecting circles, and deeper depths than that...
The conventional wisdom in those circles has held that these warning screens first appeared sometime in fall 1991.
Specifically, on later pressings of ROBIN HOOD's July 1991 VHS release...
However, over the years, I haven't seen one of those tapes containing the green warnings (as opposed to the equally iconic red-orange warnings that Disney had been using prior to that, for a good 7 years) that was printed any earlier than spring 1992...
So, for now, I rule that those ROBIN HOOD pressings with the green warnings started popping up around early 1992. Around the time 101 DALMATIANS came to VHS. And I'm specifically talking about the prints that have the green warnings and the cut-short 1989 Walt Disney Classics logo. Not the more common set of pressings that use the gradient 1988 Walt Disney Classics logo. I've got that one, mine's printed in September 1993.
So... Not ROBIN HOOD... Where else?
The Walt Disney Studio Film Collection...
A showcase collection of the studio's most-known live-action classics that came in cardboard slipcover cases, it's often been suggested that this collection first hit stores in September 1991... So that means the green warnings came out in fall 1991, right?
The montage of films that appears the beginning of each VHS ieven copyrighted "1991", so that's proof, eh?
But upon digging, the line of videocassettes hit the store shelves on January 24, 1992...
Tumblr media
Funny thing is, sometimes the copyright dates on things don't refer to release years. It's merely the year the thing is copyrighted.
For some Disney examples, the '80s VHS releases of CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY carry - in Roman numerals - the copyright years. CINDERELLA is copyrighted 1949, and SLEEPING BEAUTY 1958. CINDERELLA was theatrically released in February 1950, BEAUTY in January 1959. So, they were copyrighted at the end of their respective completion years. The Pixar film ONWARD, a March 2020 release, carries a 2019 copyright at the end of the credits.
And so on and so forth, there's plenty of examples elsewhere. Off the top of my head, video games' copyright dates don't always align w/ release year. MS. PAC-MAN in pretty much every iteration is copyrighted 1981, but the game actually hit arcades in February 1982.
So yeah... It appears that those green warning screens appeared on January 24, 1992... They may have been created in late 1991, printed onto VHS and Betamax tapes in late 1991, but they first appeared on television screens in late January of 1992.
1992 was like this aesthetic reset for Walt Disney Home Video.
The tapes now had all-new FBI/anti-piracy warnings, we went from red-orange with a Golden Age of Hollywood-looking font to green and more basic sans-serif fonts. We now had an all-new Feature Presentation logo:
Tumblr media
There's also a weird bit of history concerning when that one first appeared... There's been an anecdote going around for what seems to be two decades, that has long claimed that this self-writing bumper actually first appeared in late 1991 on specific pressings of RESCUERS DOWN UNDER... But I have yet to find any evidence of those existing. For my non-existent money, it first appeared on 101 DALMATIANS' debut VHS in April 1992. Second set of pressings, to be exact. The 1st pressings of DALMATIANS had no previews whatsoever.
Even some title cards using the same lilac background and Laser font to match, as seen on the VHS releases of 101 DALMATIANS and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the Walt Disney Classics logo - ya know, the one with Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey - saw a minor update, in that it looked a lot more saturated and blue than before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subtle differences, but they're there!
Those who made the title cards/bumpers really liked the Laser font, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even the French-Canadians got one:
Tumblr media
An all-new Walt Disney Home Video logo appears to have debuted in early 1992 as well... Sometimes in black, sometimes in blue:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It actually first appeared in late 1991... But on commercials only. Not the full 5-second logo, but just the second-long shine with an announcer speaking, and the music corresponding with the movie trailer:
youtube
That ad for RESCUERS DOWN UNDER above might just be the first-ever appearance, at that...
It seems the full logo debuted on the 1992 VHS release of NEWSIES, and - in bumper form with additional text - 2nd pressings of THE ROCKETEER that same year. Otherwise, it was elsewhere throughout 1992: Commercials, promo tapes, etc.
And that was, to date, their biggest year anyways due to the success of both 101 DALMATIANS (which moved over 11-14m units) and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (which broke the record back then, with over 20m units sold).

With the introduction of 25 new Truly Me dolls and the retirement of all previous TM dolls, I was curious to know exactly how out of the ordinary this is. So I ran the numbers and ended up with some interesting statistics about how Truly Me dolls are released and retired!
I’ll break this down into sections.
Starting with:
I. Length of availability
It seems very sudden to be retiring Truly Me dolls that were released only a few years ago. But that’s definitely not the norm. TM dolls are usually around a bit longer.
The Truly Me doll with the longest availability is TM #13, at a whopping 27 years! She was released in 1995 and only retired earlier this year, in 2022.
Tumblr media
She actually holds the record as the second longest continuously available doll, when counting all dolls, not just Truly Me; Addy Walker, who was released 29 years ago in 1993, holds first place as longest available. (Obviously I’m not counting Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly as being the longest available, since all three have had periods of retirement, and so have not been continuously available, which is what I’m tracking here.)
The Truly Me doll with the shortest availability is probably Truly Me #86, who was released in February 2020 and retired circa November 2021, a total of about 21 months.
Tumblr media
The reason I say “probably” is because that record might also be held by the original Truly Me (at the time called Girl of Today) #6, who was first released in 1995 with black hair and brown eyes, and at some point circa summer 1997 was replaced with a green-eyed blonde-haired doll.
Tumblr media
That could mean original #6 had anywhere from 20 to 23 months of availability. Since this happened before American Girl sold dolls on their website, we can only guess the dates based on her inclusion in the quarterly catalogs. Whereas with #86, we know the exact date she was released and retired.
Other Truly Me dolls with short availability (3 years and under) are #36, #45, #48, #50, #76, and #81 thru #88.
The average amount of time that a Truly Me doll is available is 9.2 years. But there is a trend in the numbers that show that the years of availability are getting smaller.
Tumblr media
The numbers in brackets represent the first 20 Girl of Today dolls released in 1995. (There’s more than 20 because I’m counting the three dolls whose appearance changed: #6, #18, and #19). The average amount of years that an original Girl of Today was available before retirement is 13.6 years. For dolls released after 1995, (TM #s 21 thru 88) the average is 7.6 years of availability.
II. Number of dolls released
This year’s Truly Me release of 25 new dolls is actually unprecedented in another way: this is the highest number of new TM dolls that have ever been released in a single year. Tied for second place are 1995 and 2009; in each of those years, 20 new dolls were released. 1995 was the debut of the American Girl of Today line, which eventually became Truly Me. As far as I can tell, 2009 was just a very productive year for the doll designers, and there was no particularly special reason for it.
After the Girl of Today dolls release in 1995, there were no new dolls released to that line until 2001, when #21 was released.
Tumblr media
No additional TM dolls were released until 2004, when #22, #23, and #24 were released. Several more came in 2005 and 2006, but none were released in 2007. There were 4 dolls released in 2008. Then, after dropping 20 dolls in 2009, there were no Truly Me dolls released in 2010. Starting in 2011, however, each year there have been at least 2 new Truly Me dolls released. And since 2011, the average number of Truly Me dolls released per year has been about 3.7 dolls. That’s not counting the 26 new TM dolls released in 2022 (#92 was released this spring, before we knew about the TM relaunch).
III. Face molds
2009 was special for another reason, in that until 2022, it was the most recent year that an entirely new face mold (the Sonali mold) has been added to the Truly Me line. The first TM doll to have that mold was #46.
Tumblr media
I say “entirely new” because 2018 saw four new face molds introduced to the boy dolls, but those were just modifications of existing face molds, so it’s debatable as to whether that counts.
Tumblr media
But the limitations in face molds is rather surprising, isn’t it? So many new face molds have been made for character dolls since then, that it seems rather unfair to limit new TM dolls to only 5 face molds and 2 of their modified boy variations.
This most recent release breaks tradition by introducing 5 new face molds to the line, bringing it to a total of 12 different face molds! (I’m counting the 2 boy face molds in that number). That means about 50% of the new TM dolls have face molds that weren’t previously used for TM dolls.
IV. Meet outfits
This new release marks the first time that Truly Me dolls have been offered with multiple options of meet outfits. The Create Your Own dolls have been doing that since 2017, but they don’t count.
What I have noticed is that over the years, the Truly Me meet outfits have been comprised of fewer and fewer pieces. Right now, the TM meet outfits have 4 total pieces: a dress, underwear, and two shoes. Here’s a table that tracks the shrinking number of components in the Truly Me meet outfits. This is NOT counting accessories, which do not automatically come with the doll and must be purchased separately. But it DOES count shoes and socks each as two separate pieces. (So for example, one pair of shoes and one pair of socks is 4 total pieces).
Tumblr media
Based on trends, in the next 2 to 4 years, the Truly Me meet outfit will shrink down to 3 pieces, so maybe the next one will be just a swimsuit and flip flops. After that, I suppose they’ll be sold without any clothing or shoes at all!

BAND & MUSICIAN NR, NEWS RELEASES
FEBRUARY 21, 2019
BY ADMINISTRATOR
Happy Birthday Kurt Cobain!
In honor of what would have been Kurt Cobain's 50th birthday, Morrison Hotel Gallery is announcing its next exhibition: Grunge - The Rise of a Generation, a photography exhibit celebrating grunge music, the fashion, the attitude and its impact on anyone who has listened to Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or worn a flannel shirt.
Nirvana's Bleach was released 30 years ago this year. Soundgarden's Superunknown will celebrate its 25th anniversary on March 8th. Grunge is making a comeback and it's happening now.
Opening March 8th in New York City, Los Angeles and Maui, Grunge - The Rise of a Generation is a collection of images taken by legendary photographers who were in the middle of all things grunge.
All images are available for purchase at the gallery locations and via the website www.morrisonhotelgallery.com
From Sonic Youth to Soundgarden: Morrison Hotel Gallery Kicks Off Grunge Month with Grunge: Rise of a Generation
Characterized by frayed fashion, a brooding sense of apathy and slow, riff-heavy sounds, the grunge era not only soundtracks an angst-ridden coming of age but moreover defines the general sentiments of an entire generation. A musical genre unlike any other, grunge took the aggression of punk and the intensity of heavy metal and added elements that gave the music its signature grinding, sludgy distortion. Hitting its commercial stride by the early 90s, "the Seattle sound" gives rise of a pantheon of grunge gods including but not limited to Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and the evergreen Kurt Cobain once dubbed by Time as "the John Lennon of the swinging Northwest."
As Nirvana's debut Bleach celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and Soundgarden's Superunknown turns 25 on March 8th, Morrison Hotel Gallery kicks off Grunge Month in celebratory recognition of the genre that would provoke an entire pop cultural movement with the unveiling of Grunge: Rise of a Generation, a photographic exhibition highlighting the work of Lance Mercer, Jesse Frohman and many other exceptional photographers who helped define a cultural phenomenon which continues to resonate with audiences throughout the world.
Tumblr media
Kurt Cobain 'The Last Session', 1993 © Jesse Frohman
Among the photographs highlighted in the exhibit are images that encapsulate the unvarnished vibe that ran throughout the grunge scene. There from the beginning was Seattle-born photographer Lance Mercer who began documenting what was to be a seismic shift in American music and culture from its very onset. From 1991 to 1995, Mercer went on tour with Pearl Jam as their official photographer. During that time, he photographed the band's elevation to legendary status - Eddie Vedder's raw energy onstage juxtaposed with him relaxing backstage next to a bottle of booze, as well as the band posing in a pile on a Seattle hillside. From Alice in Chains onward, Mercer's stunning work takes viewers back to a time when dirty and unpolished became the new paradigm in sound and style.
A number of other extraordinary photographers were also poised to capture the grunge movement's visual culture dating back to 1986 when Ebet Roberts photographed Sonic Youth performing onstage at NYC's CBGB in a series of shots that would ultimately capture the infancy of the entire grunge era. Additionally, early images of Soundgarden by Karen Mason-Blair and Jay Blakesberg resonate with the many reasons the band would come to define the distinct Seattle sound, whether they show a long-haired Cornell and crew sweating and whipping the audience into a frenzy or crowd-surfing across a wave of fans. Furthermore, in one of the last official photo shoots with Nirvana before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Jesse Frohman captured a series of shots of the front man swathed in a leopard skin cardigan, hunting cap and oversized enamel sunglasses covering his head and face. Aloof yet strangely vulnerable and connected, these portraits draft the legacy of an unlikely icon.
"With Grunge: Rise of a Generation, we are not only celebrating the 30th anniversary of Nirvana's Bleach, the 25th anniversary of Soundgarden's Superunknown, or those artists whose contributions exist within the time capsule of a genre; we're also celebrating the durational implications of a cultural phenomenon," said Marcelle Murdock, Gallery Director. "Featuring the pioneering contributions of grunge predecessors like Sonic Youth in dialogue with the usual suspects like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Hole, and L7 among others, Grunge: Rise of a Generation provides the framework for a more holistic yet all-encompassing conversation between the super famous and the fringes of a definitive movement's coming-of-age."
In addition to the exhibition, Jesse Frohman will give a talk on March 14th, at the NYC gallery, where he will discuss his photo shoots with Cobain and Cornell. His book, Kurt Cobain: The Last Session, will also be available for sale.
"As someone who came into adulthood within the era, I never imagined the possibility-much less, the importance-of revisiting the period through fresh eyes in collaboration with some of my favorite photographers and artists of all time. With that, I am eager to present this special exhibition of such social and personal significance this spring at Morrison Hotel Gallery." adds Murdock.
Grunge: The Rise of a Generation will open to the public on March 8th and will run through March 31st.

About Lance Mercer Lance Mercer, born and raised in Seattle, started photographing at 13. Through his involvement with the local music scene in Seattle, Washington specifically portraits of the late Andrew Wood, Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, he was invited to tour with Pearl Jam (1991-95) as their official photographer. This endeavor quickly established him as a sought-after photographer for a host of other well-known bands including Alice In Chains, Beck, and The Presidents of the United States to name a few. Other music clients then followed including projects for: Epic, Columbia, Capitol, Warner Brothers, Geffen, A&M, Sony, Microsoft, Redbull, VH1, MTV. Lance's work quickly appeared in publications like: Rolling Stone, Spin, Time, Vanity Fair, and Alternative Press among others.
In 1997, he collaborated on a retrospective book of Pearl Jam photographs called Place/Date, with Seattle photographer Charles Peterson. In 2007, 5X1 Pearl Jam Through the Eye of Lance Mercer was published, further chronicling Lance's experiences with the early 90's grunge rock era.
Presently, Lance continues to create striking photographic work with special focus on documentary, editorial, commercial and music photography.

Imagine an alternate universe where Sega of America backed the Saturn and the 32x never happened. Right after Sonic 2’s release they tell Naka and Yas to make a showcase Sonic game for it’s launch in November 1994. In your opinion, how similar would a 1994 Saturn Sonic game have been to S3K? Would it’ve just been S3K in a 2.5d style (like ps1 klonoa), or something drastically different (fully 3D?)
This is a very confusing alternate universe. The timeline is hard to follow.
Sonic 1 was 1991, and both Sonic CD and Sonic 2 were going to be 1992. One gets the idea that if they thought they could get away with it, Sega would have put Sonic 3 out in 1993, but Sonic Team pitched it as a flagship for Sega's SVP chip -- their answer to Nintendo's Super FX. Sega seemed to know Sonic 3 would miss 1993, so, from what I remember hearing, they delayed the fully-completed Sonic CD from 1992 to 1993 so they would have a flagship Sonic game to fill the gap while Sonic 3 SVP got ready.
Then Sega got cold feet on the SVP. They dramatically cut its power back to save costs, likely refocusing efforts on the Saturn. Sonic Team dropped the SVP version of Sonic 3, restarting it as a more traditional 2D game. This was sometime in May or June of 1993, if I remember right, maybe July. Right around that time, Sega of America signed a deal with McDonalds for a brand deal of February of 1994, giving Sonic 3 a hard, immovable deadline that apparently made development miserable (Yuji Naka is on record saying Sonic 3 was the hardest anyone ever worked on a Sonic game).
Given that the Saturn launched in November of 1994, Sonic Team 100% knew the hardware was coming by the time the abandoned the SVP. By the time Sega cut the McDonalds deal, America must have known the Saturn was coming, too. I would assume that, if they wanted to, they could have very easily said "The SVP is gonna suck, let's make this for the Saturn instead so we can keep doing our idea."
But they didn't do that. The Saturn came in hot. Sega's strategy was to go as fast as possible and beat the competition to market. But they didn't have to do that, they could have slowed down or reconfigured things, and didn't. The whole thing as I read it was that basically one side of Sega formally announced something to the other side, to which they got a reply of "Wait, YOU'RE doing hardware TOO??" Neither side could really slam on the brakes because the ink on the manufacturing contracts had already dried.
You subtract the 32X from that equation and the Saturn still launches in Japan in November of 1994 with a rushed, junk port of Virtua Fighter and not much else. Developers did not have enough time to build competent software for the platforms. The Saturn was so rushed that even by May of 1995, when the system launched in America, some of the software still wasn't done!
This lead to the legendary promotion where if you registered your Sega Saturn by a certain date, Sega would send you a free copy of Virtua Fighter Remix as an apology for the bare bones port it originally launched with. The Saturn got other "sorry our first port sucked" versions, too, like Daytona CCE as an apology for the original port of Daytona USA.
So if I want to be pedantic, we could subtract the 32X from this equation and Sonic 3 still comes out on the Genesis because Sega of America needed the game by February 1994 for the McDonalds deal, 9 months before the Japanese launch of the Saturn, and 15 months before the North American launch of the Saturn.
Otherwise, I'd just say they would adapt whatever they were planning for Sonic 3 originally, which was apparently an isometric game that ultimately inspired Traveler's Tales to make Sonic 3D Blast. Maybe the original version of Sonic 3 would have been bad, actually? Who knows. It'd be nice to get footage of that some day.

Tyler was also an antagonist/anti villain of the episode Bloodletting of The Originals, where Tyler carried out his vendetta against the infamous Klaus Mikaelson.
He was the son of Richard and Carol Lockwood, and the nephew of Mason Lockwood who was also a werewolf. He was initially portrayed to be arrogant, selfish and a bully. But after triggering the family curse which turned him into a werewolf, he has learned to tone his behavior down. Before this revelation, he was referred to many times as a "dick," by both his best friends; Matt Donovan and Jeremy Gilbert. He was shown to have an athletic build, and great strength as a human. He also had a short temper and became angry very easily.
He didn't understand why he behaved the way he did, at least until Mason came to visit after Richard Lockwood's death. Initially after becoming a hybrid, he was extremely grateful to Klaus for taking away his pain of turning every month. However, he soon becomes angered at the prospect of being sired to him after he bites his girlfriend, Caroline Forbes. He manages to break the sire bond and continues to help other hybrids break the curse of being sired. This came at a price once Klaus found out about his actions, as Klaus murdered his mother and last remaining family member. Since then, he swore revenge on Klaus for his actions.
He had an on-and-off relationship with Vicki Donovan until her death and after he triggered his werewolf curse, starts to fall for Caroline after she helps him on a Full Moon, despite her relationship with his best friend, Matt, at the time. His relationship with Caroline has gone through the rocks over the series yet it fell apart after he chose to avenge his mother in favor of staying in college and being with her.
After a failed attempt to kill Klaus and Hayley's child, he was imprisoned in the Garden until released by Rebekah as a "parting gift" to Matt and in 500 Years of Solitude returns to Mystic Falls. He later grew suspicious about the relationship between Nadia Petrova and Matt, leading to the discovery that Katherine was, in fact, inhabiting Elena's body without anyone realizing. In Man on Fire, Tyler became possessed by Julian, a Traveler, in the same manner as Matt and Elena were possessed by Gregor and Katherine, respectively. His control over his own later resurfaces without the Travelers realizing, allowing Tyler to uncover what they were planning: the eradication of spirit magic and everything that witches ever created through it. He ultimately escaped and quickly relayed what he learned to his friends.
After the Travelers used the Body Sealing Spell on Tyler, Julian got permanent control of Tyler's body and due to Markos destroying the Traveler's Knife that was needed to remove Passengers, Julian could not be banished. Later, Julian was captured by the Travelers and they brought Julian to Mystic Falls, where they had cast the Magic Purification Spell, which can undo any non-traditional magic, including the magic that created vampirism. As a result, when Julian was forced to enter Mystic Falls in Tyler's body, Tyler's vampirism and activated lycanthropy were both stripped away before Tyler and Julian both died, as vampirism was what was keeping them alive.
Tyler, ended up on the Other Side, but thanks to Bonnie's sacrifice and Liv's magic, he was able to be resurrected and rejoin his loved ones in the living world in Home. Shortly after he returned, he discovered that he was no longer a hybrid due to the Travelers' Magic Purification Spell. At the beginning of the sixth season, Tyler was seen struggling to control his renewed anger issues due to his return to being a human with a werewolf gene, and desperately wanted to prevent himself from triggering his curse once again.
He ultimately reactivated his curse, despite his best efforts to avoid it, when an already-dying Liv begged him to kill her and save himself; Tyler done as asked and mercy-killed her to re-trigger his werewolf curse which saved his life in I'm Thinking Of You All The While. While he was saying his goodbyes to Elena, she encouraged him to leave Mystic Falls and do whatever it is that he wants to do, insisting that he embrace his lycanthropy and let it be what makes him extraordinary. So Tyler left town and moved to the city.
