keith mcnally, the owner of NY restaurant balthazaar, is a spiky and controversial figure: on one hand, he was the one that banned james cordon from his restaurant, and on the other, he defended ghislane maxwell... still, he's an interesting person to follow on IG. i thought i'd just drop one of mcnally's posts here:

PICASSO'S FORMER GIRLFRIEND, FRANCOISE GILOT, DIED YESTERDAY. SHE WAS 101. THIS A TRUE STORY THAT I WROTE TO MY YOUNGER CHILDREN 10 YEARS AGO.
Dear George and Alice,
A few years ago when we were on holiday in Guadeloupe, I was looking around for a book to read. Lying on a chair was something called Life With Picasso, a book about Picasso, written by his former girlfriend, Francoise Gilot. I began reading the book and after 10 minutes couldn't put it down. Mostly because I didn't pay for it. Gilot met Picasso in Paris in 1943. She was 21 and Picasso 61. Though they were in love and had two children together, they never married. Picasso was a genius, but a monster to live with. Gilot was the only woman strong enough to leave him. The book was less about Picasso and more about Gilot's gradual liberation. I was so captivated by the book that on returning to New York I had an urge to write to its author. I dialed 411. Unbelievably, there was an F. Gilot living on West 67th St. I called the number and Gilot herself answered. I apologized for calling out of the blue, and explained I was so taken with her book - written 43 years ago - that I felt compelled to call her. She didn't like talking on the telephone and asked me to write her a letter instead. The next day I wrote her a long account of why I'd enjoyed her book. She replied to my letter, and this led to a serious correspondence between us. At one point Gilot invited me to dinner at her apartment on 67th St. It was above a restaurant appropriately called Cafe des Artists. The apartment was large and elegant, and hanging on its walls were a few paintings by Picasso, but mostly by Gilot herself. It was just me, Gilot, and a friend of hers, for dinner. I couldn't believe I was sitting next to Picasso's old girlfriend. Gilot became quite animated over dinner, and told me such interesting stories about Matisse, Braque and Picasso himself. Picasso was born all the way back in 1881 - over a hundred and thirty years earlier. It was strange to think I was within touching distance of the 19th century. I wished you both could have been there.
Much love, Dad xxxx

Zicatela Mazunte Zipolite
We stayed around 4 days in Puerto Escondido (first in the ‚center‘, later in Zicatela). In Puerto Escondido we did a bioluminescence tour - Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism (yes, wikipedia) so if you swim in water you see blue light around your body. It was an amazing experience and it felt really magical.
Then we went to Zicatela which is very touristy and there are heaps of surfers - we rented surfboards once but the waves were crazy and I didn’t try it there. Most of the time I was lying on the beach, tanning, reading, relaxing. Finally a destination had vegetarian options. The streets were full of fancy restaurants and cafés with even vegan options. Since it was very crowded and the waves were not the best for us we booked a surfcamp in Zipolite where the waves are smaller.
On the way there we stopped in Mazunte one night and I loved it there. It was like Zicatela but calmer and the vibe was great. We went to a raggae party and had great fun on the beach and on the party. Since that village my mood got better and I even manage to counterfeit the guys sometimes. It‘s not too easy to travel with three guys who constantly make fun of you or tease you (which is really disturbing after some time tbh). We talked that issue out but I still have to fight to be treated respectfully sometimes.
The first day in Zipolite (which is even smaller than Mazunte) was great! We stay in a rather old and shabby hostel but the owners are so friendly and I love the oldish vibe there. Everything is laid back and on the beach there is almost only naked people. :))
My first surf lesson (I only tried it by myself once in Guadeloupe) went very well I‘d say. We had a great teacher and I managed to get up on the board almost every time. Some times I also got a great nose-mouth wash with saltwater but I really enjoyed it and had so much fun. Plus, we surfed just when the sun set so we had amazing views while catching the waves.
I can‘t wait to improve my skills, to stay in this beautiful place and to hopefully stay as happy as I am now ✨

Exploring Portsmouth
Tumblr media
Set on the enchanting island of Dominica, the vibrant city of Portsmouth calls out to travelers with its intriguing blend of rich history, natural charm, and a dynamic sense of adventure. As an impassioned writer and a daring explorer, I found myself irresistibly pulled towards this incredible destination, eager to explore its hidden gems and share my experiences with fellow travelers yearning for exciting escapades.
When to Go:
Choosing the perfect time to visit Portsmouth primarily depends on your preferences and intended experiences. With its tropical climate, Dominica enjoys warm temperatures all year round, ranging between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). The dry season, spanning November to April, is ideal for sun-seekers, while the lush greenery of the rainy season, running from May to October, contributes a magical touch to the landscape. Keep in mind, hurricanes occasionally occur during June to November, so it's advisable to stay updated with the weather forecast before your trip.
How to Get There:
Reaching Portsmouth is an adventure in its own right, as you kickstart your journey to this Caribbean paradise. The most straightforward way to access Dominica is by flying into Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM), situated approximately 30 minutes from Portsmouth. Several international airlines offer flights to Dominica, promising a smooth and hassle-free journey for travelers. Alternatively, you can opt for a ferry ride from neighboring islands like Guadeloupe or Martinique, allowing you to witness breathtaking coastal scenery before setting foot on Portsmouth's shores.
Where to Stay:
In Portsmouth, accommodations mirror the city's adventurous spirit and offer varied options to cater to every traveler's taste. For luxury seekers craving serenity, enjoy the exquisite beachfront resorts that pepper the coast, offering stunning panoramas of the Caribbean Sea. If you prefer an intimate experience, consider the boutique hotels within the city that allow you to immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture. For budget-conscious travelers, guest houses and eco-lodges provide a comfortable and affordable stay, emphasizing sustainability and proximity to natural beauty.
Gastronomy and Culture:
Prepare to embark on a gastronomic journey that will satiate your taste buds and awaken your senses. Dominica's cuisine blends Creole, Caribbean, and European influences, resulting in a tantalizing fusion of flavors. Explore local restaurants and sample traditional dishes like "callaloo," a leafy green vegetable stew, or "mountain chicken," an unusual delicacy derived from the native giant frog. Don't miss the opportunity to attend a lively Creole festival, brimming with vibrant music, dance, and mouthwatering street food, giving you a glimpse into the island's rich cultural tapestry.
Activities and Sights:
Adventure is synonymous with Portsmouth, and there is no shortage of exhilarating experiences to be had. Begin your exploration by stepping into the remarkable Morne Diablotin National Park, where you can hike to the summit of Mount Diablotin, Dominica's highest peak. Your reward is a breathtaking panorama of cascading waterfalls, lush rainforests, and sweeping coastal vistas. For water enthusiasts, Cabrits National Park is a must-visit. Dive or snorkel in the pristine waters of Prince Rupert Bay, discovering a vibrant underwater world bursting with colorful coral reefs and diverse marine life. To delve into the island's history, wander through Fort Shirley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the park, uncovering the tales of battles waged and victories gained.
Tours and Tips:
To fully absorb the wonders of Portsmouth, consider embarking on guided tours that spotlight the city's highlights. Take a boat tour along the Indian River, a serene waterway enveloped by mangroves, where you can spot exotic birds and even bear witness to the river's night-time luminescence. Interact with the local community by joining a cultural tour, where you can learn traditional fishing, cooking, and handicraft-making from the friendly locals.
Money and Shopping:
The currency in Dominica is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), and most establishments accept major credit cards. However, it's advisable to carry some cash, especially when visiting more remote areas. Shopping in Portsmouth offers the chance to support local artisans and bring home distinctive souvenirs. Prowl through the bustling markets, where you'll find handmade crafts, colorful batik fabrics, and aromatic spices that will propel you back to the island long after your journey has ended.
Nightlife and Transport:
After sundown, Portsmouth's nightlife awakens with dynamic energy and infectious rhythms. Dance till dawn at local bars and clubs, grooving to the pulsating beats of reggae, soca, and calypso tunes. Taxis and minibusses are readily available for transportation within the city, but for the more adventurous souls, renting a bicycle or moped allows for easy exploration of the city's charming streets and picturesque landscapes. As I bid adieu to Portsmouth, a destination that has imprinted its mark on my soul, I am filled with gratitude for the memories created and adventures experienced. This city, with its enthralling culture, gastronomy, and a never-ending array of activities, truly embodies the essence of exploration. So, my fellow wanderers, I implore you to embark on your own journey to Portsmouth and plunge into the magic that awaits. Allow the spirit of adventure to guide your footsteps and let the treasures of this Caribbean gem unfold before your very eyes. Bon Voyage! Read the full article

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Finding a good hotel in St. Barth?
The resort is located on the secluded west coast of the island, and features both a large and small pool. The rooms are decorated in rich colors and offer both ocean and garden views. The best restaurants in Guadeloupe are a mix of French and Creole cuisines. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, and you'll find something for everyone's taste. The most popular places to eat are La Voile d'Or, Le Flamboyant, La Cuisine Creole, and Le Poulpe. The food is fresh and tasty, and the service is friendly. You'll be able to enjoy the ambiance of a French bistro while you dine. Scroll https://www.relaisdumoulin.com/ to visit once and enjoy the services.
