Our Organizing Wins in 2023

Over the past year, EWOC had its busiest year yet with some truly extraordinary organizing wins. These include EWOC’s direct support in 14 successful union recognition wins and 15 more workplaces currently in a union drive. We’ve also connected 65 workplace campaigns and represented more than 7,000 workers to outside unions.

Our 2023 Campaigns
These are some of the incredible stories from campaigns in 2023.
Residents at Beth-Israel Deaconess hospital in Boston ran a petition campaign with support from EWOC volunteers. That campaign garnered a supermajority of signatures in less than a week, and management conceded to the overwhelming pressure. They won a $10,000-per-year housing stipend and additional benefits for the 700 residents on staff.
Twenty-six workers at a Juiceland warehouse in Austin, Texas, won a $2-per-hour pay increase after marching on their boss.
Workers at The Basement, an escape room in Los Angeles, worked with EWOC volunteers to learn the foundations of organizing. They then went on to work with Actors Equity and become the first unionized escape room in the U.S.
In New York City, workers at Hex&Co., a gaming cafe, worked with EWOC volunteers for more than a year to develop organizing skills before connecting with a union. Their successful union drive with Workers United sparked a wave of game store union organizing across New York City. Two more stores have since announced union drives.
In Princeton, New Jersey, 19 workers at Labyrinth Books, an independent bookstore, are unionizing with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) after working with EWOC for over a year to develop their organizing skills.
Workers at Barboncino in Brooklyn worked with EWOC volunteers one-on-one over the course of many months. They learned and applied their organizing skills to become the first unionized pizzeria in New York City. Leaders from this campaign have even become organizing volunteers with EWOC. They use their experience and skills to support other service workers interested in organizing across the city.
2023 Special Events
In addition to EWOC’s organizing support, we had a record year of training. About 480 workers participated in our foundational training program. This four-week program runs six times a year at no cost to participants. We also put on two “Train the Trainers” events, growing from 10 to 55 foundational program facilitators. This has greatly helped expand our capacity to support workers interested in our training.
In 2023, EWOC launched a fellowship program designed as a follow-up to the foundational training, specifically for workers engaged in ongoing workplace campaigns. Participants were invited to apply with their co-workers. We welcomed 49 participants split into four cohort sessions, each lasting six weeks.
EWOC also put on a number of events in 2023. We discussed many labor topics, including salting, corporate research and power mapping, the Cemex decision, and organizing in remote workplaces. Jane MacAlevey joined EWOC for training on winning a first contract, and members of UAWD and TDU came to speak about the power of strikes and contract campaigns. Adam Conover attended an EWOC volunteer call and gave us a shout-out on his show.
In 2023, EWOC released a 26-part video series entitled “Unionizing 101.” These short videos were designed to make unionizing accessible and fun. They broke down core organizing questions like leader identification, power mapping, and more! These videos have more than 6,000 views on YouTube alone.

When we started, I didn’t realize we’d be the first Amazon warehouse to unionize. I’ve already received calls from past coworkers or people who have gone through similar things at their workplace, people who’ve been fired for speaking up and asking for better wages. I think this will be like a fire starter for a lot of companies. Some people have said, “You all at Amazon have given us courage that now we can speak up, and somebody will listen.”

I used to work in retail, just like a lot of you out there. Where I worked was a sort of downscale/budget department store, but not as classless as Walmart. Sure, I got my dose of anti-union videos, confusingly garbled PA systems, and demands to sacrifice my body for the profitability of faceless and nameless private shareholders. Eventually, they stopped giving me hours and so I quit.
While I was working there, though, they let me drive the power lifter. Let me explain. You all know what a forklift is, right? Well, a power lifter is the fork part of the forklift, without the rest of it. Somehow, removing the "drives around" part and keeping the "poorly balanced overhead human-killing load on a hydraulic lollipop" part makes it "not-a-forklift" in the eyes of the law. Therefore, no expensive forklift certification training is needed for a bunch of half-stoned teenagers to drive it.
So I got good with it. Along with pallet-jack drifting, the power lifter soon became akin to an artist's paintbrush. I could fork a pallet without looking, pull it slightly out of the top racks, and then rock the base of the lifter to shake loose an individual box from the stack. Catch the box as it falls, pop the pallet back in, go do some stocking. Smooth.
I thought that I was King Shit, except that there was another guy working in the warehouse with me, and he was a little more senior. At first, I thought he was a lot more senior, but then when we got to talking it turns out he had only shown up three weeks before me. Three weeks was all it took for him to turn into the hardened bad boy of the shop, shit-talking supervisors and refusing to wear his company-provided red polo shirt tucked in.
In fitting with his hard-as-nails exterior, he also refused to use the power lifter. A child's toy, he said, too slow for serious de-racking. What he preferred to do instead was free-climb the pallet racks, climbing up to three storeys above a solid concrete floor with no safety rope. It was at this time I began to wonder about the concept of forklift certification and the rate of employee turnover.
One day I came in and he was just gone. I immediately assumed the worst, but the concrete floor was just as grody as usual, with no evidence of Kil-Z having been applied to the place where his brains struck the pavement. Now I was the grizzled old dude of shelf stocking, senior to the next guy in line by almost seventeen whole days. He kept referring to the power lifter as a forklift, which still raises my hackles to this very day. Go tell it to the Feds, Boy Scout.

Hey! I have a situation that I have no idea what to do with, but it’s tangentially related to stuff you talk about so I thought I’d ask. Feel free to ignore!
So I’ve been working at this company for juuuust over a year, I was working floor-level retail and warehouse before that. Things moved fast, I’m good with tech and systems, I’ve ended up webmaster and manager of the e-commerce store somehow, in charge of a couple people, and my manager’s talking about setting up a regional distribution centre for all 10+ physical stores and having me run it once I graduate in may (bc also I’m in uni right now).
The logistics side of things I’m not worried about. HOWEVER, I was one of the early organizers at my old store when we were unionizing (not that my manager knows about that lol) and I am having trouble figuring out how to balance my ethics with the desire to not lose the first job I’ve ever had that pays me more than 16$cdn an hour. Like, I’m a manager, but also I don’t have any control over hourly pay, hiring, or the payroll hours allotted to the store: the most I’ve been able to do (so far) is make sure that people get stable schedules, no-one’s doing unpaid overtime, and communication is clear, but I might have more responsibilities/power in 6-12 months.
Do you have any resources on, like, unionizing, talking to upper management to get your employees paid more (I’m being paid low-average hourly for my job but they are NOT being paid enough), pitfalls, making sure people are treated as well as possible, etc, when you’re in middle management?
If you have any thoughts/resources on upper-management-friendly arguments for low-hierarchy workplace structures those would also be very nice, because they’re asking me to start thinking about store-level management tiers and I would VASTLY prefer to keep things fairly cooperative.
So yeah. It’s a tricky situation, thank you for reading this far, and feel free to ignore!
Ah, that's a fun situation to be in. I'm afraid I don't have much experience with being in that place (& I recommend talking to a delegate about stuff like influencing how the workplace is structured) but I will say that I think you already have more power to help than you think you do. Giving ppl stable schedules and making sure they get paid for their OT already puts you miles ahead of like 90% of managers, and it can be a big deal to have a person on the inside during labor actions & bargaining.
If you've already got / still got a union in your shop, and it's a fighting union rather than a yellow business union, I recommend cornering a steward and being like "Hey, what can I do to help." Elseways (or in addition), hit up the IWW's Organizing Department; they'd go absolutely wild for something like this and probably have way more comprehensive advice than me.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, one of the labor movement's most vocal champions in Congress, is planning to visit Amazon workers in New York City on Sunday as a second Staten Island warehouse prepares to vote on whether to form a union.
Voting at the 1,500-employee LDJ5 facility, which is located across the street from the JFK8 warehouse that scored a historic union win earlier this month, is set to begin on April 25, a day after Sanders' (I-Vt.) planned visit.
Christian Smalls, president of the Amazon Labor Union (ALU)—the independent, worker-led organization leading the unionization efforts at the e-commerce giant—announced the Vermont senator's visit in a tweet on Wednesday.

On the day of Sanders' visit, ALU is planning to hold a rally near LDJ5 to show support for the unionization effort at the Staten Island facility. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, and Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, are among those expected to appear at the rally.
"Unionization at Amazon holds a special significance for postal workers who work in the same mail/package/delivery industry. When one group of workers rises, we all rise," Dimondstein said in a statement following the victory at JFK8 earlier this month.
"The APWU stands ready to assist the newly organized workers in Staten Island in any way we can in the coming and challenging battle to win a good first union contract," Dimondstein added, "and stands ready to work with all Amazon workers and all unions in building Amazon workers' power at Amazon."
During an organizing call last week, Sanders expressed his view that ALU's victory at JFK8 has the potential to spur "a national, sweeping movement" of unionization at Amazon—a corporation notorious for mistreating its employees—and other companies across the United States.
According to Smalls, employees at more than 100 Amazon facilities reached out to ALU about organizing their workplaces in the wake of the JFK8 win. In Bessemer, Alabama, meanwhile, the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) is accusing Amazon of unlawful interference during a recent union election, which was too close to call.
"All across this country, people are saying, 'Whoa! If these guys at Amazon can take on that company, we can do it as well,'" said Sanders, the chair of the Senate Budget Committee. "People are sick and tired of corporate greed."
While ramping up its union-busting campaign ahead of the LDJ5 vote, Amazon is also formally objecting to the JFK8 election in a bid to overturn the results. The company has until Friday to file evidence of its allegations with the National Labor Relations Board.
Among Amazon's claims are that ALU "engaged in electioneering in the polling area" and "distributed marijuana to employees in exchange for their support." The company also asserted that ALU's "members and agents harassed and threatened physical violence and other reprisals against employees who were not supportive" of unionization, an accusation that ALU attorney Eric Milner emphatically rejected.
"To say that the Amazon Labor Union was threatening employees is really absurd," Milner told Reuters earlier this month. "The Amazon Labor Union is Amazon employees."

The Retail, Warehouse and Department Store Union (RWDSU) said a hearing officer for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recommended on Monday that a new election be held at Amazon's warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama, potentially providing the nearly 6,000 workers there a second chance to unionize. According to the union, the NLRB hearing officer determined that Amazon violated labor laws during the April election.
The NLRB confirmed on Monday that the hearing officer issued the report to the regional director in the case, but declined to comment further. The hearing officer's report, which requires a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to be released publicly, is a preliminary ruling that the union is hailing as a win.
"Throughout the NLRB hearing, we heard compelling evidence how Amazon tried to illegally interfere with and intimidate workers as they sough to exercise their right to form a union," Stuart Applebaum, president of RWDSU said in a statement. "Amazon's behavior throughout the election process was despicable. Amazon cheated, they got caught, and now they're being held accountable."

Jane McAlevey, longtime organizer for the AFL-CIO and SEIU, breaks down what she sees as the failures of the union organizing campaign in Bessemer. Some highlights on why she believes the campaign failed:
The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) had inaccurate lists of workers from the beginning of the campaign. Their initial filing with the NLRB assumed there were 1500 workers at the Bessemer warehouse. Amazon responded that there were in fact 5800 workers, forcing RWDSU to scramble to get the necessary 30% of workers to sign that they were interested in joining a union. This is necessary to begin the election process with the NLRB.
Organizers handled issues surrounding employees' anxiety about paying union dues poorly. When Amazon launched a very predictable campaign about the futility of handing a percentage of your hard-earned money over to a union, the president of the RWDSU's response was that because of Alabama's right to work law, employees weren't actually required to pay dues. This is very obviously the worst possible union response to this concern. Organizers should be prepared from the onset of a campaign to aggressively address the topic of dues and what they provide for workers in the long run, as it's a favorite talking point of union busters.
The language of activists and organizers during the campaign was heavily pro-union and less pro-worker, speaking about the union as though it was something "other" or "better" than the workers themselves. When a company's aggressive arguments against unionization include characterizing the union as an organization that takes your money and then can act without your approval or remove some of your personal agency, it's important to emphasize that the union is the workers.
Organizers focused on interacting with workers at entrances and exits of the workplace, rather than making house calls. This is an egregious mistake, particularly as these are places where workers are still under employer surveillance. Especially in such a tense, public election against which the company is waging a very aggressive campaign, employees can feel understandably anxious about being seen interacting with organizers. Organizers claimed they were avoiding house calls due to covid-19, but were more than capable of taking precautions (face masks, hand sanitizer, social distancing, outdoor visits). Studies have shown that house calls are one of the most important tactics for organizing campaigns.
No majority public structure tests were done. A majority public structure test is when a majority of workers who are eligible to vote in an upcoming union election sign a petition or take photos and produce a poster, flyer, or website that displays their signature or faces, with a message stating their intent to vote yes. It's important for pro-union workers to publicly make a stand, even in hostile working atmospheres, as it encourages more hesitant workers to engage. Structure tests should be repeated until a majority of workers are willing to sign and should be continued throughout the campaign. This is a staple tactic of large-scale unionization efforts. The majority of public materials instead featured union staff and outside supporters, creating an environment where workers could easily feel disenfranchised from the campaign.
There was very little support from local organizations, churches, religious groups, etc in Bessemer. Community support, especially from faith leaders, is extremely important in organizing campaigns. Workers from the RWDSU didn't even reach out to local community groups until remarkably late in the game, when they should have done so before the campaign was even publicly announced.
McAlevey argues that the campaign should have been halted the moment the union realized how inaccurate their assessment of the amount of workers within the warehouse was. A failed campaign, especially one that receives so much media attention, can be worse for worker morale than never having one in the first place. While McAlevey and I may disagree on a multitude of things, she has inarguably been a very effective organizer. As a member of a private sector union, I think there's a lot of criticisms that one can make about business unions and the ways that they (and their organizing tactics) fail us. All this aside, I do still believe that conventional union tactics can be useful, especially as a first step towards progress within the constraints that we have. We can make the argument that direct action could have been more successful (I think that when you can't get a group of workers to vote "yes" on unionization, you're still likely to have difficulty getting them to do something as bold as wildcatting, but I digress), but I think the overarching concern is that the loss in Bessemer wasn't strictly a failure of conventional union tactics—it was a failure of those tactics to be implemented in ways that we know lead to success.

Workers at a Staten Island, N.Y., Amazon facility will begin voting in person Friday on whether they want to unionize.
At the same time, a thousand miles south, workers at the e-commerce giant’s Bessemer, Ala., warehouse are in the final stretch of a mail in vote that will be counted Monday. 
The two elections are labor’s best chance to get a foothold at Amazon yet and a bellwether for the future of organizing at the nation’s second-largest private employer.
“Amazon has a model of paying little to no taxes, feasting on public subsidies and mistreating and dehumanizing its employees,” Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), which would represent workers at the Bessemer facility in the event of a unionization victory, told The Hill.
“What we are concerned about is that the way that Amazon treats its employees does not become the model for the future of work,” he continued. “So for us the importance of this election transcends this one warehouse.”
Workers at both facilities are organizing for similar reasons — supporters of unionization have been critical of Amazon’s demanding work schedules, pay and protection from diseases such as COVID-19. 
The approaches they have taken are very different. 
Workers at the Staten Island warehouse will be voting on whether or not to join the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), an independent group led by current and former employees of the facility. 
Their election will stretch until Wednesday, and the National Labor Relations Board will begin counting votes soon after.
This will be the second election at the Bessemer facility in as many years over whether workers want to be represented by the RWDSU, which represents 60,000 workers across America.The National Labor Relations Board previously determined Amazon had improperly interfered in the first vote.
Unionization faces long odds at both warehouses. The ALU failed to hit 30 percent support among the over 5,000 employees of the JFK8 facility in Staten Island the first time it petitioned for an election and will need to clear 50 percent to clinch an election win.
The RWDSU was defeated by a ratio of more than 2-1 in the first election at the Bessemer warehouse before contested ballots were counted. The facility, like most Amazon warehouses, has also had significant turnover among its 6,000 plus employees since the last election, cutting into the union’s head start gathering support. 
Beyond the numbers, one of the key reasons that Amazon is favored is the sheer amount of resources the company has put into defeating the unionization efforts.
Amazon has plastered both facilities with “vote no” posters and literature, flooded employees with texts urging against unionization and hired armies of consultants to persuade individual voters on warehouse floors.
The company has also leaned heavily on in-person meetings with staff during work hours to convince employees.
Dale Wyatt, who started at the Bessemer plant in August of 2021, told The Hill that Amazon held weekly so-called captive audience meetings from October all the way to when ballots were sent out in February. 
During those meetings, according to Wyatt, managers tried to paint the RWDSU as an outside organization that will make decisions against the workforce’s wishes and suggested that wages and benefits could be reduced in the event of a union win.
“I always felt intimidated by what they had to say,” he explained. “There were a couple of times where I stood up and said ‘this is just a lie.’ They would shut the meeting down immediately if they were ever questioned.”
Workers at the Staten Island facility have had similar experiences. 
Our focus “is generally counteracting the sheer volume of information that Amazon is sending out,” explained Connor Spence, vice president of membership at the ALU and current JFK8 employee.
“They’ve been doing captive audience meetings literally back to back every single day,” he told The Hill. “They send texts, they send emails ... the walls are completely plastered with anti-union posters and flyers.” 
This is not the first time workers in Bessemer and the RWDSU have faced these tactics, and the union is confident that conditions are better for them this time around.
“The biggest change since the first vote is the vaccine,” Appelbaum said. “There is noting more effective than having face-to-face conversations with workers in their home — that’s what we couldn’t do in the first vote and that has been the thrust of this revote campaign.”  
Workers at both facilities have also gotten a boost from labor regulators in the last year. 
Amazon reached a settlement with the NLRB in December to notify workers of their rights to organize and allow employees to stay on site longer after their shifts. 
The NLRB also flexed its muscles by issuing an injunction earlier this month to reinstate Gerald Bryson, who was fired in April 2020 after protesting unsafe working conditions at JFK8.
These will not be the last union elections at Amazon warehouses — one is already scheduled at another Staten Island facility later this spring — but could go a long way in forecasting how successful the campaign to organize the company’s over a million American workers will be.
“Should one of these Amazon votes be successful,” Jeffrey Hirsch, a law professor at University of North Carolina School of Law, said, “I think you’re more likely to see other Amazon and frankly even employees at other firms be a little more interested in unions.”

While many Amazon warehouse workers in Europe have unionized, its brutalized, underpaid, routinely maimed US workforce remains tragically unorganized, thanks to the US's weak labor laws that make forming a union far harder than at any time since the Gilded Age.
But all that may be about to change: 6000 warehouse workers in BHM1, the massive Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, AL, will vote next month on a push to unionize under the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

Amazon, like other tech giants, is absolutely reliant on building and maintaining a competitive advantage by exploiting technology to drive wages ever downward while ducking responsibility for harming workers.
