Researchers in Poland excavated a 17th-century woman buried with a sickle around her neck and padlock on her foot.
“The sickle was meant to sever the woman’s head should she attempt to get up,” Dr. Poliński said.

Ok so i may have a revenant in my hands, this girl bound in chains just appeared out of nowhere while i was fishing in the lake, she did not notice me, a alligator came by and tried to snatch her up, i will not describe how she killed the alligator, she is now just eating bits off the alligator, im afraid of what she will do once she finishes eating, what do i do?
Is this at ██████ ████, in ██████████? Let me see...R for revenant? Nope, because why would it be?
Try N for Necrotic, then subfile Corporeal and Hard to Kill.
...Here it is. Okay, so, just calmly and quickly remove yourself from the premises. Unless you specifically caused her death, or get in between her and the object of her revenge, you're most likely to be safe. Revenants tend to have a trigger activity as well, something that people do that sends them into a mindless rage, so it's in your best interest to gather up your stuff quickly and quietly, and get out of there. We'll have a security team dispatched to your location. Norm, can you tell them a little more about revenants? Absolutely. As Jenny implied, “Revenant” has a specific definition in Office classifications that differentiates one from your average zombie. Revenants are corporeal undead that are animated by dark or demonic magic, or even the deceased’s own rage activating their latent magic potential. They’re single-mindedly driven by a specific object or idea of obsession, typically revenge or something similar to their circumstances of death. Without incorporating their “Focus”, Revenants are by definition extremely hard or even impossible to put down. As is often the case with dangerous extranormal entities, the solution is to work with it. Revenants are by definition dangerous and violent, but remember that whatever is left of the person they used to be is angry and in pain.
Knight? Hey, it's Jenny. There's a Code Vorhees at-yeah, it's ██████ ████ again. No campers this time, just one guy fishing. Can you get a team out there? Thanks.
What? No, I'm fine. It was mutual.

Re the smothering I've always wondered if it could have been Wake bc of the implication Harrow has at least maimed someone who tried to take the sword away from her? And from chapter 11 I think Wake has some kind of control over the unconscious Harrow at least there so someone not dead just injured/unconscious from the sword could potentially have been the one to try to smother her? Since she tries to go after her in cytherea's body it doesn't seem to matter whether she kills her from the inside or the outside so motive is still there?
The motive is definitely there, but I'm again returning to the way Wake moved in Cytherea's body.
Tumblr media
The timeline of Harrow the Ninth is hazy, but Harrow's already killed eleven planets at this point. Wake has had months to acclimate herself to Cytherea's body and work on figuring out how to move it, and this is the best she can manage.
Wake absolutely could have made a thanergetic connection if Harrow killed someone with the sword, and it's very possible Harrow did. But I don't think Wake would have been capable of the motor control necessary to carry out the murder attempt the way it's described. Especially not with only a week to practice.
As for possessing a living body, that's a trickier question. Moving the body might be easier, but every case of living possession by a revenant so far, the living soul has already conveniently been removed first. Like Colum Asht. Even Harrow was in the River chatting with Ortus while Wake took her body for a spin. So I guess maybe if Wake had wounded an Eighth House siphor's cavalier, had really good timing, and moved fast?
There's also the relative strength of the connection. When Harrow was possessed in chapter 11, she'd already been continuously exposed to Wake's thanergy since she was a small child. She'd been feeding Wake's ghost on her own blood every day since waking on the Erebos, and she'd already acclimated her body to accept a foreign soul using the blood of Wake's daughter. The only way the connection between them could have been stonger would be if Harrow had killed Wake herself. It's like she was trying to be possessed.
So it's not impossible it was Wake, but it does seem very improbable to me given what we know about possession.

I don't know if you're reading Dracula Daily or are a fan of Dracula generally, but we're having a discussion loosely titled "what the hell is Jonathan Harker?" that can be summarized as we think he is over the course of the novel turning into Something but Probably Not A Vampire, and I was interested if you, as a folklorist, might have any ideas or weigh-in. Main features are superhuman strength and speed, paleness of features, and a whole lot of Cold Anger. Someone made comparison to German Wiedergänger which are super interesting in and of themselves. So yeah I was just wondering if you knew any applicable monstrous-transformation-as-trauma-response stories
Hmm interesting... There are certainly concept in folklore that have to do with being victimised by or just being around entities that are considered evil, and it having a permanent effect. It often has to do with concepts like corruption and tainted purity that are...uncomfortable to apply to the real world, but as long as we are playing in the world of Gothic Fiction:
I think imagining Jonathan as a wiedergänger or revenant could be spot on. Especially if you link it to his devotion to Mina. Of course to be a revenant you do have to die first. But if he died without getting the full vampire treatment like Lucy, it would make a lot of sense if he'd come right back to (un)life. Either from a desire to revenge himself on Dracula or from devotion to Mina, or both! Because both are very respectable reasons to return from the dead, folkloricly speaking. (I'm fond of these types on legends, does it show?)
The other direction you might go is taking the folklore concept that people can become destined to become a vampire during their life. This could happen because of how you were born, or how you died, but certain things during your life. Like committing certain sins, being cursed, or getting entangled in the occult. This idea shows up in various places, like Romania and Greece, and sometimes goes as far as to call these people "living vampires", even though they will not be full vampires until after their death. In Romania they are often connected with feeding on life force instead of blood while they are still alive and they are said to have strange magical powers and non-human abilities that can make them extremely dangerous, but sometimes helpful. (These living vampires are sometimes called "moroii', but not always, and sometimes this word is used to refer to a living child of dead vampires/strigoii). So if you'd want to go the "Jonathan got corrupted" route, either by Dracula or his three lady companions, then giving him sudden non-human abilities and a draining, unnerving presence to those around him could also fit very well!

The kung-Kang family.
It has been a long time almost twenty-five years since tournament, twenty-five years since kung Lao, Liu kang, Kitana and jade became revenants, twenty-five years since some revenants returned to human and twenty years since the war had begun between NetherRealm and outworld.
The war has been going on for a long time since all these events have happened the gods thought they know who lived and who died but what they did not know was that there were people who were hidden from their eyes.
In a faraway land in Japan was the inari village where people lived in small villages away from the city the crime rates were high but strange things kept happening around the village things no one would remember especially about how the things had ended.
"Zhuyin How much longer do we have to keep walking? "A girl with black hair in twin braids with bangs in the front she had fair skin and black eyes she wore a black inner robe under blue hanfu that was tied up with a blue belt and she also wore brown arm guards and black boots "just a few more minutes Yijun" a boy with black hair in a low ponytail and tan skin with brown eyes said he wore a white buttoned up shirt under a red hanfu that was tied up with a red belt on his waist he also wore black pants and black boots "you said that five minutes ago Yijun" Zhuyin said to Yijun "maybe it would help if you keep quiet instead of being annoying all the time" Zhiyun said to Yijun with a frown Yijun rolled his eyes at her "whatever" Yijun said to Zhuyin.
The village was currently at peace in the morning with the people doing their usual some selling stuff in markets and shops, some buying stuff, some travelling and trading stuff from other villages and Yijun was looking around while Zhuyin was walking ahead to find an inn if they have enough money "hey have you sensed any of dads soldiers anywhere?" Yijun asked a bit scared "no I haven't which is a bit strange" Zhuyin said to Yijun "if he didn't, I am glad but what if sends aunty?" Yijun asked Zhuyin a bit scared "no he would not" Zhuyin said to Yijun.
meanwhile a boy with long brown hair in a half up and half down with a small bun on top and amber eyes with pale skin noticed the two siblings with pale skin he was wearing white robes with bandages wrapped around his neck he also wore brown shoes along with his arms he was currently at the vegetable shop buying some stuff "how much for the carrot?" the man asked, "30 yen" the vegetable vender said the man looked confused "isn't that a bit pricy for one carrot?" the man asked "business is going bad kid now either buy it or scram!!" the vegetable vender said to the man "are you sure the business is going bad or just your vegetables?" another man came he had brown hair in a high ponytail he had tan skin and hazel eyes he wore a blue haori over a coffee brown kimono and black pants he also wore black boots "what are you talking about!? my vegetables are fresh!!" the vegetable vender said "not to me they are not-" "Hiroto- nii san maybe we should leave" the man said to Hiroto who looked at him "yea there will be shops with good vegetables Ryu" Hiroto said to Ryu.
As they were going to go something happened the ground shook creating a small earthquake suddenly the ground shook again and again as a creature was coming for the village it looked like two giant manticores and this sent the village into panic as they ran hid in shops suddenly the two manticores ran to Yijun and Zhuyin direction to attack them "looks like dad sent them" Zhuyin said "but there aren't manticores in the nether realm" Yijun said to Zhuyin "then who else will-" " watch out!!" Zhuyin and Yijun looked in front only to see the manticores getting blasted away with two men standing in front of them "what are you doing it's dangerous!!" Zhuyin said "looks like we have some newcomers Ryu" Hiroto said to Ryu with a smirk 'I know but manticores escaping the forest is unusual" Ryu said "Lian.." Hiroto mumbled to himself.
"Shall we put them back brother?" Ryu asked, "I will take the one on the left" Hiroto said as he put on a shaolin hat Zhuyin was shocked seeing the hat 'it looks like the rogue revenants? who are they?" Zhuyin thought seeing Hiroto wear his razor brimmed hat.
both of the manticores rushed towards the two siblings Hiroto took his razor brimmed hat and threw it towards one of the manticores who jumped over it is causing the hat to go afar but Hiroto smirked as the hat came back and sliced the manticores tail off Hiroto then teleported above the minotaur in midair and used wind blade it went through the manticore killing it.
'His attacks seem out of range but his aura_' "watch out!!" Zhuyin's thoughts got interrupted as Ryu pushed him afar and accidentally got on top of him as they dodged the second manticore' tail Zhuyin looked at Ryu who smiled at him "are you alright?" Ryu asked Zhuyin blushed slightly seeing Ryu close to him and his bright smile "I'm fine" Zhuyin said, and Ryu got off Zhuyin "stay here I will Handle this" Ryu said to Zhuyin as he faced the manticore.
Ryu kicked his feet on the ground and levitated a boulder he punched the boulder sending it fast towards the manticore causing it to fly Ryu then created orange aura around his hands as the white bandage in his arms wrapped around the manticores head using it to lift the manticore's knocked out body and he sent the boulder towards the manticores stomach causing blood tor burst out creating the manticore turned into dust along with the other.
Ryu and hiroto walked to the vegetable vender "we will be taking these" hiroto said ryu took the carrots and his grocery bag "so dumplings or vegetable rice?" Ryu asked as they walked together "dumplings i guess i am in the mood for some heavy dinner" Hiroto said to ryu "I'll be making other stuff too Hiroto" ryu said to hiroto "and lian will be helping you as her punishment" hiroto said to ryu "really nii-san?" Ryu asked Hiroto.
Yijun went to zhuyin and helped him up "are you alright?" Yijun asked "I am fine" Zhuyin mumbled "those brats!! They expect us to give them stuff just because they defeat monsters for us!!" The rude vegetable vendor said "if it weren't for them our village would have been destroyed you dumb vendor!!" One of the villagers said "but you don't know who their family is plus that hat looks like that damn revenants!!" The vegetable vender said "may i ask who?" Zhuyin asked the vender he had guessed who it might be "i don't remember-" "was it kung lao!?" Yijun asked the vegetable vender his eye's widened and he nodded "yes that's the name but the strange thing is no one knows where they live and no one can even trace them" the vegetable vender said.
"looks like this just got more complicated yijun but if it connects to him then it looks like both are closer than we thought" zhuyin said to yijun "let's find an inn to rest first " yijun said to zhuyin as both of them Went to look for an inn still wondering about the two brothers they saw but something was definitely right there was a connection Between them and the rogue revenant and they just need to find it out.

Everyone talking about this Morgan guy from the Eastern Europe storyline, do you know what the hell is his deal?
:) Morgan is the guy Louis and Claudia meet on their quest to find other vampires. Unfortunately, his fiancee Emily gets killed by one of them, and the villagers want to stake her.
Morgan later gets taken by one of the revenants, which Louis kills.
The casting is actually quite exciting indeed, because it means they're going to do the revenants part and the horror there in depth... ugh I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!

24 - Unseen
From the personal journal of Sir Godfrey Gwilym:
I will attempt to keep a record, lest the memories fall away from me again. I know not where they go when they are absent. I know only that I feel the unseen thread of their existence, even though I cannot follow its path. I am lost in the woods.
I was standing at the edge of Argynvostholt—so quickly it has gone to ruin—I know not for how long. My legs no longer feel the pains of stiffness or fatigue. They simply exist, and carry me where they will. So there I was, at the edge of Argynvostholt, standing sentry, staring out across the misty landscape, when a lone man walked boldly down the road and toward me.
I thought very little of his presence. I thought very little at all. I thought only that I was waiting for something, or perhaps someone, but this man was not for whom I waited. And so I stood, within an evening breeze which touched my bones, and continued there to wait.
I watched the man as he approached. I had the vague sense that this was unusual. People no longer came or went from here. Ravens flew overhead, but even those were seldom seen—or perhaps I only took no notice. What else had I missed? The fields were pastel yellow-green.
The man approached, and finally he reached me. He looked at me much harder than I looked at him.
“Godfrey?”
Was that who I was? Yes. I began to remember.
My face was resistant to expression, like my limbs had been when… when buried in the earth. Tangled with... I heard the clash of metal ringing faintly in my ears. But slowly it faded, and some other glimmer in the distance filtered through the veil upon my mind.
“Alek.”
A relative. A friend? My cousin. Our fathers were brothers. We played together in the afternoon sun, far, far from this place.
“Yes!” he said, brightening. His face was too pale. “It's been a long time! I suppose I won't ask how you're doing…” He meant it humorously, I thought. He had been an energetic boy.
“I am…” I could not remember. What was the feeling?
“I heard that you’d gone off to be a knight somewhere,” said the cousin. A pearly sense of wonder floated through the fog. Yes. A knight.
“Yes. A knight.” My voice scratched the air. “The Order…”
“Order of the Silver Dragon,” he said, glancing at the fortress behind me. His mustache twitched. “So this was where you ended up.”
A new feeling grasped me by the throat. A stronger thread of my existence tugged, but still I could not see its source. “My…” I stammered, a sense of dread arresting all my joints. Remember. “My lo…”
“Your lord?”
“My love!” It shattered me. “He was here.”
I forgot the presence of the man in front of me. I clawed through the wreckage of my ruined mind for scraps of what had been. Where was he now, this love of mine? I would not—could not—leave him behind. I am needed. I cannot find him. The dirt in my throat and my eyes and in the space behind my nose. Cold limbs pressed against my face. I could not breathe. Would not ever breathe again, but still I persisted. O… An oath.
A hand on my shoulder. “Godfrey.” Gone. They were all gone. This man was gone, to look at him. Just as dead as I was, more or less. His eyes, like a frosted pond, with shadows underneath.
“Sir Godfrey,” I said, clinging to something I had found again.
Alek laughed gently. “If you insist. I won't make you call me Captain or anything. Not now,” he added to himself.
Now. The charge. The rush of battle. There! There he was. His armor and his sword. His hand, covered by a gauntlet, but underneath it I remembered. I remembered the soft protrusion of a vein around his knuckle. His skin, I knew. The adrenaline of movement. The sweat on his brow, older now, the hairline carefully receding. All the more room to plant kisses. And still—and still—his face was lost to me. I could not remember that.
I grabbed ahold of Alek's arm. His words were seeping into me, swatting at the mist inside my mind. I needed more of them. Return my thoughts to me, my kin. “Tell me what happened.” He was there.
“I was there,” Alek solemnly agreed. “When I left home, before you, all I wanted was adventure. I would see the world.” Yes. The swords we gripped in children’s hands were wooden. They clacked together harmlessly in play. Alek—small fists on narrow hips, victorious grin—helped me back onto my feet.
“I met a man,” he continued. Had he said something in-between? A man—a man. Who was he?
“His name was Strahd.” No, that wasn’t it. That wasn’t right. It was…
“It was just a job, at first.” It was never. I became a knight because I’d dreamt it for myself. I wanted to protect all that was enchanting. What better master to serve than benevolent Argynvost? Even before I knew he was a shimmering silver dragon, a paradigm of myth and legend.
“He can be severe, but his convictions are founded.” When I met him, he was frowning, but I saw Fate smiling down on me. His lips… Gods, but he was beautiful, Argynvost’s commanding officer. I could wait forever if he would only glance my way. Turn around, my love. Turn your face to me and let me see it. I would know you once again. How could I forget?
“I don’t regret our mission,” Alek said. Nor do I, I thought. It was only unfortunate that our feet had carried us along opposing roads, our wooden playthings traded for sharp implements of war.
“It would seem you got the short end of the stick.”
I nearly thought my mind had fled my grasp—horror, when so much had since returned—but I found instead that it was reeling. Everything my cousin told me was a reflection of myself. His dour lord, his sacred mission, the deep abiding loyalty of love. He didn’t say as much, but it was written in his piercing gaze. Alek, do you truly know what you were fighting for? Were you too proud? Afraid? Or were you deaf to your own heart?
“Did I?” I replied. Where was Alek’s dark beloved now? Why was he out here, wandering the valley all alone, with shadows in his face where light should be?
I don’t know why my cousin walks this land, but I remember now why I am here. I felt the pull of that strong thread—the one which bound our hands together, when my love and I were wed. Not even death would part us. I felt his soul retreating from the resting world and knew that I must follow. Wherever he would go, he would not go alone. I dug myself out of the massive pit of weathered earth and fallen fellows. Some of them grabbed onto me and we crawled out of the mud together, to follow Vladimir back home.
“Thank you, cousin. For reminding me of myself.” I pulled him into an embrace. My shoulder crackled with the force of it. “I wish you all the best in your journey, but there is something that I must attend.”
I raced back to the fort, its crumbling stonework a welcome sight despite its disrepair. It was familiar, at last, not by rote but conscious memory. My Vladimir would be inside the place, I knew.
“Vladimir!” I called out, finding more of my own voice within my battered throat. My heels might have sprouted wings for the way I bounded up the stairs with such bright ease.
I followed that invisible line between our souls until I came upon a door. I grasped the handle, and the moths that might have been inside my ribs fluttered with anticipation. The door swung open, and there he was, seated on a high-backed chair, head resting on his hand.
“Vladimir.” I spoke his name with such relief.
Vladimir looked up. His neck cracked as he moved. “What?” he snapped. The glow within his undead eyes was dim and lackluster. It was then I noticed all the dust piled on his shoulders. Swaths of spider silk clung to his arms and legs, almost tethering him down. He had not moved in years… Perhaps decades. I did not know how long we had been lost.
He did not remember me.
“In all things, a silver lining,” I said gently.
Vladimir sneered in response. “I’ll believe that when I see it. Close the door.”
I pulled it shut by his request, and patted the old wood. There was little I could do for him, if he was in this state.
But all is not lost. This, I know. I remember days when he was tender—knights like us cannot exist without the desire to be kind, however deeply buried. I remember the sweet tears that glistened when he pledged himself to me, as I had done for him. To share in one another’s pain, and seek to protect each other from it, and ease each other of its searing bite.
Not to worry, my love. I will find a way.

Update! It has been brought to my attention that "Vovochka" is generally only used for children or in jest. "Vova" is a more suitable nickname for Vladimir as an adult. (But this in particular is a bit on the awkward side to my English-speaking brain.) Anyway, I have updated the story, and I hope you enjoy this wonderful little nugget of information! ♡
"Vovochka" pet name inspired by this post.
(I'm a sucker for Russian diminutive suffixes.)

Talking about my mk au!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a long read im sooo sorry
I know I never talk about my mk au because im to nervous to but I really wanna do smth with the revenants !!
I feel like they had lots of potential that was never used and I wanna do smth that uses it
I think only having a small handful of characters be revenants would work best I always felt like there was to many. I really wanna focus on Rev Lao and Nightwolf the most tho
I also thought that when revenants are created they are created out of hate and lies told by Quan Chi. That in turn drives them down an untrue path so really revenants are just misguided rather than evil cause they're told to be
Especially Lao cause I think a lot of what happens to his character would motivate him as a revenant and add conflict to other characters like Liu Kang and Raiden like blaming Liu for his death and looking down on him seeing him as a lesser and having extreme hate for Raiden for never recognizing his potential and worthiness as a capable powerful warrior because he was to weak. Ofc none of that is true
As for Rev Nightwolf....i think the making of a revenant varies in difficulty depending on how strong a persons soul or spirit is so in Nightwolfs case it was verryyyy hard to finally get him to form as a Rev. But this also makes it easier to reach his humanity and be reasoned with as a revenant. Which is exactly what Fujin does and it saves him from an attempted killing from Rev Nightwolf. The relationship he built with Fujin over time before Nightwolf becomes a revenant has a big part in also getting through to Nightwolf as Fujin is probably the person hes closest with and whom he trusts the most
Ofc I want Quan Chi to have responsibility for the revenants. They act like his gate way to the earthrealm and other realms (Especially Kai but that’s a whole other thing) so they can do what they need in order to release him from his captivity in the netherrealm. Ofc the revenants are under his command but they do have their own motivations through the lies told by Quan Chi so they can fight back against anyone close or personal from attempting to stop them from raising Quan Chi. So they are pretty much being used for Quan Chis gain.

Long silent on his portrayal in Curse of Strahd, revenant with too much time on his hands Vladimir Horngaard took to antisocial media today to object, "Their depiction of me is sketchy as hell. I didn't fail in punishing Strahd- I’m just making sure he enjoys his extended sentence."
