Favorite book in the Chronicles and favorite book not written by Anne?

Favorite VC book: The Vampire Armand, it's the only book we have that's in Armand's voice! 😭 It was also the very first VC book I ever read and I attribute my core impressions to that. And to be honest, I'm not of the opinion that Armand wasn't truthful in it (the Claudia thing gives me pause, but it was Anne's final word on the matter, so what are ya gonna do? 🫠). It's Armand's story from Armand's point-of-view at a difficult time in his life and I love it for what it is, I always have.

Favorite book not written by Anne: To Kill a Mockingbird. I think this is the book that I've reread the most in my life, and it taught me a lot at an early age such as:

"[...] it was the polite thing to talk to people about what they were interested in, not about what you were interested in."

"People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for [...]"

They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks l've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience.

Buffy passed away early this morning.

I woke up at around 3:30 am to the sound of a crash in the cage. I figured it was Finlay, my old, grumpy canary, he usually just shrugs it off and falls asleep wherever he landed, and gets royally pissed off if I turn on the light to help him find a perch.

Then I heard it again, and the sound of claws on the bars, and I got up. And Buffy was just sitting there. She didn't look at me, she just sat there. The only thing I managed to get out of her was a startle response when I touched her. I figured she just hit her head and was taking time to orientate herself again, so I helped her up to a perch and she tucked her head in her fluff to sleep, but she didn't close her eyes.

She was breathing way slower than usual, so I took her out to see if she had a punctured air sac, or a ruptured crop. But I couldn't find anything, she wasn't egg bound either. She nearly stopped breathing in my loose grip, so I put her back in the cage, hoping she'd gather her wits again.

I stayed up with her for nearly two hours, I snapped my fingers and moved my hand in front of her, and I did get a slight response, so I figured she was getting better. I watched her close her eyes to sleep, and I went back to bed.

I'd barely closed my eyes when I heard another crash, I got up, and that was that. There she was on the cage floor, dead.

I have no idea what happened, I don't know if she really did hit her head in the fall, but she has never fallen off a perch before. Might have been a stroke, she wouldn't be the first bird I've had who got one.

Her mate, Bella, has spent the day calling for her, searching for her, and flying out of the cage for brief periods, flying to places he's never flown to before. He's stressed and restless.

This morning he was dozing, and the second his eyes closed he jerked awake and let out a distress call, and then a call. I feel so bad for him. I'm going to the pet store tomorrow to ask if they can find another finch for me, the closest private breeder was 6.5 hours away by public transport, and I don't have anyone willing to drive... He shouldn't be alone. He's got two canary friends, but he shouldn't be the lone Java Finch. He's got up to five years left to live, he shouldn't be alone.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR OR THERAPIST, JUST SAYING WHAT WORKS FOR ME

Tips that work for me:

♡Utilize your audio notes apps on your phone as an 'audio diary', talk to yourself like it's a podcast, interview, imaginary bestie etc

♡warm wet rag, toner (I use a bottle type and a spray type), moisturizer, Vaseline for a 'lazy' skincare routine. You can also use rose water to cleanse your face. This takes literally five minutes

♡modified stretches/workouts are your best friend, it's actually very easy to do stretches without getting outta bed or even moving your blanket!!

♡open up your blinds!!!!!

♡ensures and similar brands w/ extra protein for days you absolutely can't get out of bed

♡can't shower? No problem. You can get bathing cloths at any pharmacy otc (you can purchase with an HSA card as well!) Just add water to the pack no soap or rinsing needed

♡any food is better than no food!!!

♡90 minute rice + tuna packs are good 5 minute meals w/ some substance. You can add any add ins you want(I add fried egg and avocado)

♡download the finch app!! It's super cute and like a self care tamagotchi

♡allow yourself the time to rest

♡have a self love/feel good Playlist ready

♡rewatch your fave childhood show/movie. Anything that's been longer than 5 years since you've seen it works best imo

♡pedialyte AND water to keep hydrated, add a pinch of pink salt to the water

♡mix water, rubbing alcohol and essential oils to make an air freshner spray for bedding and clothing

♡if you're not on any medications, combine l-theanine and st John's wort supplements for mood health (can also add St John's wort, damiana, lavender and mint/catnip to a tea or smoke blend)

♡pure tart cherry juice before bed to help you sleep

♡download the I Am app and repeat the affirmations you see out loud thrice

♡can't brush your teeth? Get a water flosser and add a bit of mouthwash & peroxide to the reservoir to kill bacteria and remove stuck food

♡use pink or brown noise as your background for sleeping, you can find these on youtube

♡download MindDoc & Gratitude if you have the spoons to have prompts and questions to answer about your mood

♡digital coloring books!!! I use infinite painer and sketchbook on my Samsung tablet

♡if you scroll any app, pick the one you see the most positive or nontoxic feed (lemon8 and tumblr for me), this way your consumption is potentially bettering your life

♡charge your phone and other devices in a separate room/a few feet away from your bed to reduce scrolling and help promote getting out of bed to turn off alarms etc

♡daily shower spray cleaner, helps keep your tub clean. I spray after I get out

♡use Groupon to schedule yourself a moodboosting self care activity for the month (massage, tanning, filler, facial)

♡eat with a tray in bed

♡spray your fave body spray before bed

After a decades' long working career, NaTasha Yvette Williams at last got her due this past year, winning a Grammy award for her performance as Sweet Sue in Some Like It Hot (2023), and netting a Tony nomination. Prior to that, she was in Chicken & Biscuits (2021), a show that deserved better, Waitress, and many stints as Mama Morton in the Chicago revival. She has performed in touring and regional productions across the country, and at Carnegie Hall.

The original Johanna in Sweeney Todd (1979), Sarah Rice (1955-2024) played just one Broadway show in her lifetime, but it is a role that will stay with us all forever. A deeply beloved cabaret performer, she has won MAC and Bistro awards, and was a regular feature at the long-running Sondheim Unplugged series. Even into her sixties, her soprano remained in good form, and her sly reminiscences delighted audiences month after month. Sarah Rice passed away in January of this year of cancer. She was 68.

What are some common hanasei names? Do they make distinctions for some names only being for certain gender/age/status/etc. groups?

First names: They're given temporary names by nurses and caretakers, and can swap their names multiple times through their lives. Usually one word, which can be a single concept (think "Finch", "Star") or a fusion of multiple words into one (think japanese names like tanaka being rice field + "within"). Some even pick verbs, adjectives etc, but nouns are the norm.

Examples: Ché (Waterfall), Brotûk (Tumbling rocks)

Second name: Their profession, skill, or speciality. Unlike english though, they don't use the profession name 1:1, but rather categories that encompass a bunch of things

Examples: I'paàma, which means "leaf skill" and groups anything related to botany, farming/agriculture, etc

Third name: Age, only applies for adults and up. There's a name for 22-50, 50-80, 80-100, and then one for 100 years old and up.

Fourth name: Residence! Most hanasei dont change it even after they move from their birth place though, so culturally it's often just where you were born.

So a full Hanasei name could be something like this:

But you can just call them Ché

so I’m thinking there are two ways this can go down-

(with me flying fast and loose between 92sies and livesies)-

one: the poets become newsies. essentially they’ll be “filling in” the roles each newsie brings to the film/show. neil is jack, because of course he is. he’s the charismatic leader who needs more therapy than he can pay for. his davey is obviously todd, because he’s the shy, smart kid that likes to be hidden behind his boyfriend best friend. charlie is the comedic relief of a best friend, making him race. and since knox is his best friend who’s more than half in love with him, he can be the other comedic relief of albert. we all know meeks and pitts are in love (guys, they dance together. what?), so they can take the place of kid blink and mush, respectively. do I have to include cameron? I feel like I have to include cameron. I guess he can take the spot of boots, which feels rude to boots, but I think he knows I’m sorry about it, so we’re good. keating, of course, is our father figure news reporter, and chris is sarah (WHICH MAKES GINNY HER KATH AND OH MY GOD I LOVE THAT IM SO SMART). mr. perry can be snyder, the rat, and mr. nolan is pulitzer. and stick is crutchie (no, I do not care that he’s not technically a character. he is my baby, and he can be neil’s little brother. fight me.)

I really like that one, actually.

two: the newsies become poets. same concept, other way around. now, the most obvious choice is to make jack and davey neil and todd again, but that’s a cop-out and I refuse. so. crutchie deserves to be todd, because they’re both so cute. davey can be neil, with jack being his charlie (does that mean davey/crutchie? I don’t know. is javid platonic in any scenario? I think not.). finch is meeks, albert is pitts. race is now our knox, pining HARD after- wait for it- our chet danburry character, mr. spot conlon, who is engaged (against his will) to katherine pulitzer, the wealthy daughter of the headmaster, joseph pulitzer (sarah needs to come steal kath away so race can marry a rice man). les is cameron, but specifically livesies les. the other les(es) are too good to be cameron’s character. snyder can be mr. perry (AHHHH. DAVEY WHAT HAPPENED YOU POOR SOUL). and denton is still keating because I don’t know who else would work there.

…well, damn. I love both of those. option one’s definitely more practical and sane, but I adore the chaos and hot mess that is option two. oh well. let me know which ones you guys like.

I have actually done quite a bit of research for them and am happy to give you a personal take on what one may look like in the world of animalia.

However in the spirit of my 5 second research fix I will do Java finches.

With my 5 seconds of research, I found that Java finches are a bird that has been bred by humans for quite some time and thus are considered quite tame. they have many different morphs and have a love for grain fields like rice.

My 5 second animalia take: there is a Java finches out there who spends much of their time as a butler to a large rice barron. They don't work in the fields themselves as their job is more to maintain the Barron's house, but on their days off they can be found walking through the rice fields inspecting the crop... or that's what they want you to think.

Secrectly, they are looking for rice plants or grains that are of top quality and will secretly place the rice in their pocket or bag. They then will take the rice home to their own secret rice field where they will experiment with the high-quality rice in an attempt to splice a rice plant together and make the most delectable rice in the world. Their rice patch is small, but the rice they grow within it is like nothing anyone else has ever seen...or rather, tasted.

Finally something I can count as Walk #62 - probably my last here in Toronto before I head back north.

Popped out early this morning to go get blood drawn for testing; apparently the blood pressure medication I was prescribed can in some people have a negative effect on kidney function, so I needed to have followup tests a week after starting on it. That was over at Bathurst & Finch, then I popped back over to Yonge & Finch where there’s a postal outlet in the Shoppers Drug Mart, where I could both top up my phone and pick up some odds and ends. After that I hopped a bus north on Yonge to go to an Iranian supermarket I knew of (Khorak Supermarket) to pick up dried barberries for making barberry rice (YUM!). Except I wasn’t paying attention and hopped on a Steeles Express bus instead of a regular Steeles bus, so I couldn’t get off where I needed to.  When I got off at Steeles & Yonge I was only 2-3 stops north of where the supermarket is, so I decided to walk it, and then catch a bus back south to Finch Station. The walk was almost exactly a kilometre, according to Google Maps. Plus of course whatever walking I did between other places on this little outing.
