So I did this for French comic strips and I had another bad idea:

I didn't put anyone from Europe because I am from a stranger point of view so I wouldn't have known who they really consider as their best and most recognized artists.

Most of those listed above are held very dearly to Québécois: Dédé Fortin, the lead singer of Les Colocs is a bit of our Kurt Cobain (Different musical styles but similar guys), Gilles Vigneault composed what a lot of people consider Québec's national anthem, La bottine Souriante, Québec Redneck, and Richard Desjardins have given their own modern twist to French Canadian folk music, Robert Charlebois was one of our greatest singers in the 70s, La Bolduc and Félix Leclerc were pioneers in making music for the people and by the people (A musical award is named after Leclerc).

No I did not include Céline Dion despite her superb career, but I think almost everyone has heard of her so... 🤷

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

-Going for fandom of choice on that one because I really want to see more Final Fantasy Tactics (the first one)... anything, really! It's an old niche game, so there's so little anywhere that I know of. -Going to Destiny, more dirtying of characters in the "main roster". Dirtying as in less making characters likable and fans of the player. Drifter and Mara Sov are the two main ones I'm thinking of but there are others too on the writing shelf (hello Spider, you're still an antagonist and would like to see more of you). -Still in Destiny, more consequences of things we do. Yeah we help the random team from each season, and then things happen kind of indirectly to that to conclude the season, and quite often it's just "Oh everything worked out". I get why for storytelling purposes but it ties into the whole "everybody likes us" I was talking about at point two, but I don't really remember a thing we as players did that had a negative outcome because we did it? Give me a "We're working on something for a while and later on we realize it was a bad idea but it's too late to turn back" kind of deal. O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?

Using full random for this: Va-t'en pas, from Richard Desjardins, really fits the whole Drifter/Orin dynamic. It's about someone pleading in vain to someone not to go live a different life where they'll be less happy, and how it changes his perception of the world ("Outside there are silences filled with upside-down buses/Outside I saw a sky so hard the birds fell"). Give it a try! U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

-Destiny: Savathûn. Cunning, sure of herself, tall and powerful died anyway. Won anyway. Her voice actor does an AMAZING job.

-The Locked Tomb: Camilla Hect.Incredibly logical and an analyst, but at the same time very very much so driven by attachment and hope that things will be alright in the end. Goes loud despite her haircut, and a nice mix of badass and caring.

-Best for last, from Final Fantasy Tactics: Delita Hyral (Yes I know I also said Agrias, Meliadoul, Ovelia, and Reis are my favourites but hear me out there's a lot of good characters in FFT). An amazing character that is the poster child of the road to hell being paved with good intentions... except that it's not always good intentions. There's so much character growth! Not growth as in "That character becomes better" but as in "That character's motivations, methods and goals are on a steady path and boy do they walk fast". #gatekeep #gaslight #girlboss to the max. If he was known to tumblr in this day and age there would be so much discourse over him being a good person or a bad person (he's both and also neither, which is one of the main things of the game. That and class wars). I could go on for hours about him and he's just there in a few cutscenes cause he works mostly outside what the main character knows and sees! I would never be able to write him and be proud of what I wrote. I both am glad of how he feels in the post-credits scene with Ovelia (ha, get it!) and cry about it cause no one deserves that. Probably makes for an excellent monarch though.

Mes essentiels musicaux

Cette fois-ci, vous n’aurez pas une chronique environnementale, m’apercevant que le propos peut devenir redondant et surtout complètement démoralisant. De plus, la Banque Centrale du Canada travaille très fort en ce moment pour que les propriétaires au pays perdent leur maison. On va avoir le choix collectivement entre devenir insolvable ou avoir son bungalow détruit par une tornade ou autre inondation. Mais quelle époque formidable! Continuons de foncer droit dans le mur tant que l’on peut foncer, à la vitesse d’une Dodge équipée d’un moteur 440 pouce-cube!

Non, que nenni, en lieu et place de la chronique, je vais vous partager ma liste musicale de titres préférés, supposée me représenter. Celle-ci pourrait donc jouer soit au salon funéraire à mon décès, on continue dans la rubrique « démoralisant », soit sur l’habituellement évoquée île déserte advenant le fait que je devienne un joyeux naufragé. En fait, je l’emmènerais avec moi si je me faisais adopter par le peuple des Sentinelles sur l’île North Sentinel de l’archipel des Andaman dans l’océan Indien. Imaginez, ils vivent en autarcie depuis plus de 50 000 ans, ce que j’aurais à découvrir et à apprendre dans le cadre de cette démarche d’immersion. Mais pas sûr que je leur ferais écouter les chansons dont voici enfin la liste, citée sans ordre particulier :

UFO Doctor Doctor : le spectacle va bientôt commencer, vous diront les aficionados de Maiden! Un des précurseurs de la musique métal, et une source d’inspiration pour une foultitude de groupes. C’est une référence de base, sinon LA référence.

ACDC Whole Lotta Rosie : les paroles sont sexistes, désobligeantes, politiquement incorrectes, mais vous devez écouter cela le volume dans le tapis pareil!

Anthrax Efilnikufesin (NFL) : lisez le titre à l’envers et vous comprendrez. L’idée serait de vivre la vie qu’il nous plaît sans essayer de suivre des chemins tracés. Si c’était à refaire…

Accept Fast As A Shark : outre ma sonnerie de téléphone, cette pièce commençant par une comptine allemande déploie tellement d’énergie et de bonne humeur. Attention au requin!

Les Colocs Dehors Novembre : un beau résumé, aucun autre commentaire n’est nécessaire.

Led Zeppelin Lemon Song : on n’écoute pas cette chanson pour ses textes relatifs aux relations conjugales, mais pour sa richesse musicale. Pour ce faire, portez un casque d’écoute et appréciez en particulier les harmonies et le travail de la guitare basse.

Helloween Heavy Metal Is The Law : les inventeurs germaniques du Power Metal! Cela frappe, fesse, rentre dans le dash dans le genre « destroy ». Un délice auditif pour les amateurs. Par la suite, nos amis teutons ont gagné un brin en raffinement mais c’est toujours demeuré aussi bon.

UFO Lights Out : n’entendez-vous pas les vibratos et autres effets de pédale wah wah. Le son UFO était aussi porté par un guitariste de génie.

Black Sabbath N.I.B. : c’est comme si nos amis anglais avaient patenté une corde à linge sur un manche de guitare pour leur introduction. My name is Lucifer, please take my hand!

Deep Purple Child In Time : l’album remonte à 1970, cela ne nous rajeunit vraiment pas! Écoutez avec attention la prestation du clavier et toute l’étendue de la tessiture du chanteur.

Deep Purple Highway Star : le gars, il l’aime son char! Il le qualifie même de « clever machine », très enlevant en tout cas. En concert, la toune est encore plus explosive, puisque Deep Purple improvisait, on est loin du produit marketing sans saveur Beyoncé chantant en « lip-sync ».

Triumph Fight The Good Fight : les paroles s’appliquent tellement à ma situation personnelle, mis à part le « good book » dont je me dissocie. Retenez de ne jamais se décourager.

Parabellum Doc Bollocks : c’est vraiment un incontournable de la scène rock alternative des années 80. On aime le son et les textes.

Parabellum Cayenne : quand tu as trop de principes, tu finis à Cayenne, ce n’est pas une destination touristique!

Richard Desjardins Tu M’Aimes-Tu? : un monument de la chanson québécoise et canadienne, on ne peut pas raisonnablement passer à côté et ne pas mentionner cette composition.

Richard Desjardins Le Buck : une création davantage enjouée de notre auteur compositeur interprète préféré. Grande vérité, la solitude c’est mieux à deux.

Iron Maiden Killers : le son a peut-être vieilli un peu, mais cette vague a submergé la scène musicale de l’époque. Selon la légende, Eddy la mascotte aurait été inspirée de la PM Margaret de l’époque…

Iron Maiden Aces High : on a tellement l’impression d’être assis dans le cockpit du Spitfire. Attention au Messerschmitt à 4h!

Frida Boccara Venise Va Mourir : tout simplement une des plus grandes voix de la chanson francophone, j’en ai des frissons à chaque fois. De plus, la hausse du niveau de la mer est d’actualité.

Téléphone Un Autre Monde : un petit peu de pop française, c’est rafraîchissant. De la musique qui faisait et qui fait encore du bien.

Neil Young After The Gold Rush : sans une bonne fricassée de champignons magiques assaisonnée au cannabis, tu ne comprends pas le sens des textes, mais c’est beau, merci Neil de nous transporter.

Isabeau et Les Chercheurs d'Or Bazou : on y va dans le trad’ avec une voix puissante et chaude. Le genre de chanson qui te met de bonne humeur pour les deux semaines suivantes, rien de moins. J’ai même le goût d’aller à Souris, attache-toi mon amour.

Creedence Clearwater Revival Proud Mary : CCR a enchaîné les succès, aussi repris au bord des feux de camps. On peut aussi préférer la version de la regrettée Tina Turner. Également de la musique qui fait du bien.

Judas Priest Breaking the Law : Je ne pouvais compléter une iiste Metal sans nommer Judas Priest. Il n’y a pas de fioritures, c’est simple et efficace.

Il me reste maintenant à vous souhaiter une joyeuse écoute, et aussi à me suggérer vos propres titres à rajouter à la liste. Concernant la prochaine chronique, je reviendrai probablement à mes thèmes habituels, j’avais éventuellement prévu de vous divertir avec le concept super débile qu’on entend souvent dans les médias, à savoir celui du « gaz naturel renouvelable », arghhh, j’ai même de la misère, oh calvaire, à l’écrire en gardant le contrôle de mes émotions. PPS Danse: une série de représentations de son nouveau spectacle Perles, à compter du 17 novembre

PPS Danse proposera un peu partout au Québec une série de représentations de son nouveau spectacle Perles, à compter du 17 novembre. Les artistes monteront notamment sur les planches du Théâtre Maisonneuve de la Place des arts à Montréal, le 24 novembre.

Perles

Ce projet de PPS Danse réunit sur scène danseurs, musiciens et chanteurs. Il s’inscrit dans une volonté de tisser des liens entre les disciplines artistiques et d’y intégrer plusieurs signatures chorégraphiques. C’est un fin travail de croisements, de recoupements et de regards multiples convergeant vers une narration qui dit notre monde en évoquant les thèmes de l’amour, de l’identité et du territoire à différentes époques. 

Le spectacle propose un récit non linéaire à travers le temps, les mots et les musiques qui marquent notre société. Ce voyage convoque la danse et la musique à se rencontrer en différents lieux, pour faire résonner quelques perles du répertoire de la chanson québécoise, des années 1960 à aujourd’hui.

Des pièces telles que Le tour de l’île de Félix Leclerc, La scène de Claude Léveillée, Señorita de Richard Desjardins côtoient Nameless de Dominique Fils-Aimé, Câlisse-moi là de Lisa LeBlanc, Ton vieux nom d’Elisapie, Fleuve No 1 de Flore Laurentienne ou encore Tmrw. de Milk & Bone.

L’idéateur Pierre-Paul Savoie (décédé le 31 janvier 2021) et le directeur artistique David Rancourt ont imaginé, ensemble, le processus de création du spectacle. Ils ont notamment réfléchi aux artistes qu’ils aimeraient rassembler dans le projet tout en écoutant des heures de musique afin de sélectionner les morceaux les plus pertinents. Ils se devaient de déterminer le potentiel chorégraphique d’une musique, d’une chanson. Parce que même s’ils souhaitaient célébrer et honorer les artistes qui ont donné vie à ces œuvres en premier lieu, Pierre-Paul et David ont demandé à d’autres artistes de se les approprier pour en offrir une mouture dansante. Ce sont dix chorégraphes qui mettent en scène la vingtaine de chansons qui composent le spectacle. 

« Je me souviens d’un temps d’attente à l’aéroport, entre deux vols d’avion, où Pierre-Paul me confiait qu’il souhaitait célébrer le répertoire musical québécois pour le prochain spectacle grand public de PPS Danse. Tranquillement, je l’ai vu en discuter aussi avec d’autres artistes. Une équipe se construisait, en sourdine… Perles, c’est le spectacle de la passation. »                                                                                                                                             – David Rancourt

Les artisans

Une quinzaine d’artisans ont participé à cette œuvre. Chez les danseurs : Alexandre Carlos, Marilyne Cyr, Roxane Duchesne-Roy, Sara Harton, David Rancourt et Marcio Vinicius Paulino Silveira. Du côté des chanteurs, on retrouve Biä, Roxane Filion, Sébastien Lacombe et JP Loignon. Alexis Dumais (direction musicale et piano), Sheila Hannigan (violoncelle), Vanessa Marcoux (violon) et Madeleine Messier (violon) interpréteront quant à eux la musique des différents morceaux. 

« Ils permettront aux spectateurs d’apprécier concrètement et créativement les fruits de la rencontre entre les disciplines et les œuvres. C’était un fort moteur de création pour Pierre-Paul qui oriente bien le futur de la compagnie, à la suite de son grand départ. »                                                                                                                                             – David Rancourt

PPS Danse Ouverture, créativité, humanisme, partage et engagement sont le moteur des activités de la compagnie. Celles-ci s’incarnent non seulement dans la production d’œuvres chorégraphiques originales, mais aussi dans l’implication de l’équipe pour la démocratisation de la danse contemporaine.

Le processus de création, qu’il soit dirigé vers les jeunes ou les adultes, s’appuie sur des œuvres majeures du répertoire contemporain en théâtre, littérature et chanson. Cette matière résiste, ouvre des brèches, s’éclate, se transforme par l’intervention du corps et de la danse et devient partie intégrante de la composition chorégraphique et scénique.

Depuis sa fondation en 1989 par le chorégraphe, interprète et metteur en scène Pierre-Paul Savoie,PPS Danse a donc pour mission de se consacrer principalement à la création et à la production d’œuvres s’inscrivant dans le champ de l’interdisciplinarité.

David Rancourt

Natif de Rouyn-Noranda, David Rancourt est établi à Montréal depuis 1999. En vingt ans, le nouveau directeur artistique de la compagnie s’est illustré dans une cinquantaine de productions, parmi lesquelles on retrouve des œuvres phares dans le parcours de certains créateurs, dont bODY_rEMIX/les_vARIATIONS_gOLDBERG (2005) de Marie Chouinard, Anatomies (2006) deJosé Navas, La marche invisible (2010) d’Annie Gagnon, Danse Lhasa Danse (2012-2020) ainsi que Ravages(2015) et Le cri des méduses (2018) d’Alan Lake.

Désireux que PPS Danse continue d’être un carrefour de rencontres entre artistes, disciplines et publics, David Rancourt espère que sa grande connaissance du milieu pourra faire de lui un directeur artistique rassembleur, capable d’ouverture, d’écoute, de prise de risque et de liberté.
