Graphic novels: eens wat anders dan superhelden

Bij de Amerikaanse stripwereld denken we natuurlijk meteen aan de traditionele comic met vooral superheldenverhalen. Maar er is meer. Veel meer. Reeds in de jaren '70 begonnen sommige artiesten langere en meer literaire verhalen te maken, vaak buiten het superheldengenre. Denk aan werken als 'A Contract with God', waarvoor schrijver Will Eisner zelf de term "graphic novel" gebruikte om zijn werk te beschrijven en om het te onderscheiden van de kortere, minder ‘volwassen’ comics. Uiteraard vonden er ook heel wat graphic novels hun weg naar de Nederlandstalige markt. Een selectie 👉

Essex County (Oog&Blik, 2009)

Het ontroerende 'Essex County' van de Canadese auteur en illustrator Jeff Lemire is een diep menselijke verkenning van het leven in een landelijke gemeenschap in Zuidwest-Ontario, Canada. Een plek die sterk wordt beïnvloed door Lemire's eigen opvoeding in het echte Essex County. Lemire's tekenstijl in deze strip is kenmerkend, met zijn ruwe, expressieve lijnwerk dat perfect past bij de melancholie en emotie van het verhaal. Hellevaart (Atlas, 2002)

'Road to Perdition' is geschreven door Max Allan Collins en geïllustreerd door Richard Piers Rayner. Oorspronkelijk gepubliceerd in 1998, speelt het verhaal zich af in de onderwereld van de georganiseerde misdaad tijdens de Grote Depressie. Het verhaal werd wereldberoemd door de succesvolle gelijknamige film uit 2002 van Sam Mendes en met rollen van Tom Hanks, Paul Newman en Jude Law. Een contract met God (Sherpa, 1990)

Dé baanbrekende graphic novel van de legendarische schrijver en illustrator Will Eisner uit 1978 waar ik het in de intro al over had. Vaak beschouwd als de eerste moderne graphic novel, hoewel het technisch gezien een verzameling van vier onderling verbonden korte verhalen is. Eisner's tekenstijl en verhalende technieken in 'A Contract with God' waren revolutionair voor hun tijd en hielpen het stripmedium legitimeren als vorm van kunst en literatuur. 'Black Hole', geschreven en geïllustreerd door Charles Burns, verscheen tussen 1995 en 2005 oorspronkelijk als 12-delige miniserie. Het is een coming-of-age vertelling als horrorverhaal, gesitueerd in de buitenwijken van Seattle in de jaren '70. Het verhaal concentreert zich op een groep tieners die te maken krijgen met een mysterieuze seksueel overdraagbare aandoening. Die ziekte dient in de strip als metafoor voor vervreemding, angst en transformatie die typisch zijn voor de tienerjaren. Het verhaal van een slechte rat (Vliegende Hollander, 2010)

Het ontroerende 'Tale of One Bad Rat' werd in de jaren ‘90 geschreven en geïllustreerd door Bryan Talbot. Het verhaal volgt de jonge Helen Potter die ontsnapt uit een giftige en misbruikende gezinssituatie. Met alleen haar huisdier rat en de inspiratie van de beroemde auteur Beatrix Potter als gezelschap, trekt Helen door Engeland. Ze gaat op zoek naar zichzelf en een veilige plaats in de wereld, terwijl ze worstelt met de trauma's uit haar verleden. Een deken van sneeuw (Oog&Blik, 2004)

'Blankets' is een semi-autobiografische graphic novel door Craig Thompson. Oorspronkelijk in de VS gepubliceerd in 2003, staat het werk bekend om zijn prachtige illustraties en diepgaande verkenning van familie, geloof, en de vreugde en pijn van de eerste liefde. Het boek heeft veel prijzen gewonnen en wordt vaak beschouwd als een mijlpaal in het genre. Ruis (Sherpa, 1992)

'Signal to Noise' betekende een nieuwe samenwerking van het duo Neil Gaiman en Dave McKean, dat we natuurlijk ook kennen van 'Black Orchid' (verschenen in 3 fraaie hardcovers bij Baldakijn en later ook als bundel bij RW Lion). Dit verhaal uit 1992 gaat over een filmregisseur die ontdekt dat hij terminaal ziek is en besluit zijn laatste dagen te besteden aan het bedenken van een film, ook al weet hij dat deze nooit gemaakt zal worden. Deze fictieve film speelt zich af tijdens de overgang van het jaar 999 naar 1000 na Christus, waar dorpelingen geloven dat de wereld op het punt staat te eindigen. Strange Fruit (Dark Dragon Books, 2019)

Deze controversiële graphic novel van Mark Waid en J.G. Jones werd oorspronkelijk uitgegeven door BOOM! Studios in 2015. Het verhaal speelt zich af in het Amerikaanse Zuiden tijdens de Grote Overstroming van 1927 in Mississippi. Hoewel Strange Fruit visueel verbluffend is en zware thema's van racisme en ongelijkheid aanpakt, kreeg het ook kritiek. Voornamelijk omdat twee witte creators een verhaal vertellen dat diep geworteld is in de zwarte geschiedenis en cultuur in Amerika. Maus (Oog&Blik, 2004)

Het monumentale en baanbrekende Maus door Art Spiegelman verscheen oorspronkelijk in twee delen, 'Maus I' in 1986 en 'Maus II' in 1991. Het verhaal is een autobiografische weergave van Spiegelman's gesprekken met zijn vader over zijn ervaringen als Poolse Jood die de gruwelen van de Holocaust heeft overleefd. Daarbij gebruikt Spielman gedetailleerde en expressieve tekeningen waarbij Joden worden getekend als muizen, Duitsers als katten, Polen als varkens en Amerikanen als honden. Het werk heeft talloze prijzen gewonnen, waaronder een speciale Pulitzer Prize in 1992. In Tennessee werd het werk onlangs verboden op school wegens grof taalgebruik en een naakte vrouw. Tja… 🙈

Comic book adaptations have become increasingly popular in recent years, with many of the biggest blockbuster movies being based on comic book characters and stories. However, not all comic book adaptations are as well-known as the likes of Spider-Man or Batman. Here are 10 movies that you may not have known were inspired by comics.

A History of Violence (2005) - Directed by David Cronenberg, this thriller stars Viggo Mortensen as a small-town diner owner with a dark past. The movie is based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke.

Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) - This French coming-of-age drama, directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Julie Maroh.

The Crow (1994) - Directed by Alex Proyas, this gothic action movie stars Brandon Lee as a murdered musician who comes back from the dead to seek revenge. The movie is based on a comic book by James O'Barr.

Ghost World (2001) - Directed by Terry Zwigoff, this indie comedy stars Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson as two teenage misfits who struggle to find their place in the world. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes.

Road to Perdition (2002) - Directed by Sam Mendes, this crime drama stars Tom Hanks as a hitman in 1930s Chicago who goes on the run with his son after a job goes wrong. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner.

Snowpiercer (2013) - Directed by Bong Joon-ho, this post-apocalyptic action movie stars Chris Evans as a rebellious passenger on a train that travels around a frozen world. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.

Tamara Drewe (2010) - Directed by Stephen Frears, this British comedy stars Gemma Arterton as a young journalist who returns to her rural hometown and causes a stir. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Posy Simmonds.

2 Guns (2013) - Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, this action-comedy stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as two undercover agents who are forced to work together. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Steven Grant and Mateus Santolouco.

V for Vendetta (2006) - Directed by James McTeigue, this dystopian thriller stars Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman as freedom fighters in a totalitarian Britain. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.

Whiteout (2009) - Directed by Dominic Sena, this thriller stars Kate Beckinsale as a US Marshal investigating a murder in Antarctica. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber.

Doctor Who & Doctor Strange: The Two Doctors?

Let us travel back in time, when Marvel UK had the rights to produce a magazine and comic based on Doctor Who.

Multiple incarnations of The Doctor showed visited Marvel's Earth-5556, one of many earths in the Marvel universe where the majority of the Time Lord's adventures took place.

The Marvel comics and cinematic universe is known for its crossovers. (For a more deep read into it, check out this page http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/doctorwh.htm). Characters like Death's Head, Keepsake, the Special Executive and the Doctor, sometimes crossed over between Marvel UK titles.

One potential crossover was going to be with Doctor Strange.. Doctor Strange.is the head Warlock of planet Earth, and is in charge of protecting earth from magical threats. Now, the crossover never happened, basically because Marvel decided to keep Doctor Who to its own continuity and not mix it with main Marvel properties anymore.

Former Marvel UK editor John Freeman lifted the lid on the mystery of The Two Doctors in a 2008 post on his Down The Tubes blog.

Early Nineties, Evening’s Empire by Andrew Cartmel and Richard Piers Rayner had tantalised readers in Doctor Who Magazine before getting lost in the post. Classic Doctor Who script editor Cartmel submitted a plot for a crossover between the Two Doctors.

While Doctor Who Magazine was being published by Marvel they had indulged in some sneaky crossovers with Captain Britain and a few other characters. Who do you think deposited Death’s Head on top of the Baxter Building?

It was TV Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel who proposed a Doctor Who/Doctor Strange crossover and submitted a plot to me around 1991/92, about the same time as he was writing Evening’s Empire, a six-part story for Doctor Who Magazine drawn by Richard Piers Rayner that ran into more than a few deadline problems but was eventually released as special edition of Doctor Who Classic Comics.

As the then editor of Doctor Who Magazine, I either commissioned Lee Sullivan to do the piece of promo art below, or he did it for fun. Lee’s like that.

Marvel US Editor-in-Chief Tom de Falco, a Doctor Who fan himself and who, in the early 1990s, regularly visited Marvel UK to discuss its direction, ran workshops on comics creation and more, liked the idea of a crossover. Howver, he felt that at the time, with the reduced interest in Doctor Who that was the result of the BBC’s ‘hiatus’ for the show that effectively ended the Seventh Doctor’s period on TV, there was no advantage in proceeding with a crossover which would, in his view, benefited Doctor Who more than it would Doctor Strange.

Although the story never happened, I believe Andrew used some of the ideas in his novels.
