Reasons why The Indigo Spell is my favorite Bloodlines book:

Witchcraft! So much cool witchy stuff!

Sydney and Adrian aren't together yet, and there's resisting and pining and oh, but they give in and make out every 50 pages or so

How much of a goner Sydney is from page one, she thinks about Adrian constantly and misses him the second they're apart, while telling herself that the idea that she's "already halfway in love with him" is crazy

Rant incoming!

Okay, so I apologize for my language in the following post, and I disclaim that I have NOT seen the entire show, but only a compilation on YouTube and read the summarizes on Fandom.com

So, be warned, because this is going to be ugly!

I fucking LOVE the book series Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.

I read them in English and in German, I have the audiobooks in both languages and the comics to it. I recently read the best FanFiction I have ever read about my favorit ship Rose/Dimitri (Romitri) called "The Ties that Bind Us" by @hiccuppedstudio , and it is one of the very, very few books, shows or movies where I don't have the burning need to write a fix-it, because the books are perfect in my eyes.

I liked the movie from 2014 well enough, even though it was a bit faster than the books. I can understand that and I fully accept that.

What i can't and won't understand and accept is that bullshit motherfucking series from 2022 which I just masochistically (otherwise i have no explanation why I sat through those 7min) skimmed on YouTube.

And don't get me wrong, it is not because they decided to cast people that don't look like the characters from the book. I couldn't care less if I can vibe with them and the story.

BUT, and here comes my full-blown inner Rumpelstizken out to play, what I HATE is when they not slightly change a plot, but fuck the entire thing up with no shame or decency or honor or respect for the source material what so ever!

you CAN'T put the content of 5 (i don't know if they added the sixth as well) books into 10 episodes, no matter how long they are.

you CAN'T try to establish characters, a forbidden romance, a stalker and kidnapper, a very traumatic death of your best friend, the murder of your ship, the 'I have to go and kill the man I love', the restoration of that man and the murdering of the leader of that society within 10 fucking episodes, just to end it with a: \(o.o)/ meh

you CAN'T just fuck something out of existence that is as vital as Dimitri's restoration and redemption to the entire plot of the fifth and sixth book because of… reasons.

you CAN'T just kick out a turn of events (Dimitri turning Strigoi and Rose going to Siberia to kill him, and everything that it entails) when it is THAT VITAL to not only three books, but also to the character development of ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS!

I fuck you not, I have another ten reasons on what that shitshow of a show fucked up, but I fear that if I go on, I'll bit into my screen, and I am not even exaggerating!

Now, seriously, who the FUCK decided to do that!? The books are awesome – like I said – and I can only recommend them to each and every one who likes BAMF main character, and doesn't automatically think that vampire means sparkling disco ball!

BUT! The show was not made for the 'normal' consumers; it was made for the fans, because the books are relatively old (2007 was the first volume released) and the producers/directors/screenwriters dared to try and sell us shit on a paper plate and then asked us to clap

Thanks to Bookclub where we read Bloodlines outloud on the internet, I've been spouting off character interpretations left and right and of course I've been overthinking one about Adrian recently:

When Adrian goes to see his dad, he ostensibly seeks to gain a few things from it: money for his living expenses, for his dad to show some interest in his life, and information about his mom so that he can have contact with her while she is incarcerated.

Sydney notices that, in spite of this, that Adrian has chosen to specifically dress and behave in ways he knows won't endear his dad to him: he wears jeans that are getting holes in them (not jeans that are designed that way, ones that specifically are getting worn down), he crumples up his shirt so it has wrinkles, and then when he gets to the restaurant he orders a martini immediately.

None of this is set up to get Adrian what he wants, which is first and foremost access to his mom. When everything falls apart its easy to look at the scene and read Adrian as argumentative and not even trying to give his dad any leeway, even as Sydney tries to stay out of the father / son fight so Adrian can have a chance at getting some of what he came for. This obviously ends badly, with his dad laughing at the thought that his son could or would want anything serious from him. He writes Adrian off without a thought and then tries to apologize to Sydney for Adrian's existence with a payoff.

So why did Adrian go about it the way that it did?

I see it as a defense mechanism, one that I can relate to. When you are viewed as the bad kid, the worthless one, there is a deeply entrenched defense mechanism that comes about over time. If someone always expects the worst from you, at a certain point you lean into it - both because its generally easier than trying to change their mind, and also because it hurts less.

I think that no matter what Adrian did, his conversation with his dad would've gone the same way. He would have asked for money and told he was irresponsible, he would have tried to tell his dad he was going back to college and trying to be better and his dad would've written him off, and when he asked for a way to contact his mom his dad would've told him no and that it was his fault she was in prison.

Now imagine this scene, going exactly the same way, but Adrian is putting on the best version of himself he can. He's wearing the right clothes, following his father's lead, sober and stays calm the whole time. And his father still puts him down -- not for who he is now but for who he thinks Adrian is.

So Adrian puts on the wrinkled, messy clothes. He orders the martini. He orders the second martini.

Because this way, when his dad writes him off, at least Adrian has the comfort of knowing he wasn't trying the best he had. At least his best isn't proven to be not enough.

sydney filling in the role of older sister to jill when lissa kept avoiding her once they found out they were related. jill filling in the role of younger sister to sydney when sydney and zoe left on such bad terms

adrian being the only one who knows about mason’s death at the beginning of bloodlines and how much that impacted eddie. and how he knows why eddie is so devoted on protecting jill. because he failed once and now he has a chance to redeem himself and not have her end up like mason. when eddie figured out sydrian were in a secret relationship, he kept it to himself because he knew the implications it would lead to both of them.

eddie and sydney growing up internalizing the expectations of their jobs. both put everyone’s needs beyond their own because that’s what they were taught their whole life. they feel the need to be the problem-solvers, the heroes to everyone.

adrian looking after jill long before she was revealed to be a dragomir. he was probably her only friend at court, since he also feels like an outsider at court. then when jill has the bond, she understands adrian's actions and feelings.

sydney and adrian related to the expectations set by their families and friends. how they are the only one who sees the other's true self underneath the masks they put on for the rest of the world. they hold each other accountable for their mistakes and encourage to do better. they are each other cheerleader's. they grow together.

eddie and jill going through so much at such younger age and are both survivors. how eddie admires jill for her strength even before she became more confident, and how jill feels the same with eddie. how jill knows eddie so much, his devotion to protecting others, that she “freed” him from his duty to be her guardian to save sydney from re-education.

despite all their differences and all the reasons why they shouldn’t work out as family and friends, they proved everyone wrong.
