Smee my beloved
I want to talk about perhaps the most under appreciated character of the Peter Pan franchise—Mr. Smee. Other than Captain Hook, he is the most fleshed out pirate, and honestly does not get enough love for the brilliance of his character because he’s often dulled down to a bumbling sidekick, when he is truly much more.
In the original Peter Pan 1904 play (and 1911 novel) :
Smee is described as the only non-conformist and Irishman aboard the Jolly Roger.
Though in most adaptations he takes the role of the first mate, originally he was the boatswain, but his relationship to Hook nonetheless remained quite strong, implying that it was each other they sought companionship in rather than a relationship based purely around their stations.
Instead of wiping his sword clean of blood after a battle, he is said to clean his spectacles.
Described as oddly genial for a pirate, but make no mistake that he DOES kill people. In fact, he has a curved sword which he nicknamed ‘Johnny Corkscrew’ for the way he twists it into his enemies guts. Pretty gruesome.
Despite being described as ‘stupid’ and ‘pathetic’, he’s often the only one Hook can have intelligent conversation with. In fact, it is Smee who points out that when the clock in the crocodile runs out, Hook will no longer hear it coming and thus be at risk of death.
He sows, dances, and even sings! He also evidently collects trinkets and gives silly little names to things.
He is the only pirate other than Starkey to survive the end battle, and whereas Starkey is captured by the Natives, Smee goes on to explore the world and sell the trinkets he gathered from piracy. He even claims that he was the ‘only man Hook ever feared.’
He is the only person Hook expresses admiration for, and too is one of the few pirates who is not berated or harmed by him.
Hook sees him as the only man with legitimately good form, which is peak levels of respect from Hook.
In Hook 1991
Smee takes on a more domestic role in caring for his Captain, and evidently Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins both agreed to play Hook and Smee as a married couple!
Shown to be the only pirate other than Hook capable of reading, writing, and understanding more complex language (he makes a joke to the pirates in the first scene he’s in, in which he refers to Hook as ‘unfathomable’, and when the pirates don’t react, he realizes he has to dumb down his vocabulary for them.)
Jovial and quite silly, always knows what is best for Hook, and it is evident they’ve been with each other so long that they know each ones quirks.
Reminder that SMEE is the person to suggest the plan of turning Peter’s kids against Pan by making them like Hook, meaning he is the one who came up with the evil plot, once again proving that he’s not some bumbling idiot.
Actually so sweet I love him I heart him did you see the scene where he plays baseball? Husband.
In Peter and the Starcatcher (the play by Rick Elice)
Shown to be a really good actor, good enough to fool Aster into believing he’s a legitimate navy Lieutenant.
Once again surprisingly literate, having quite a few boasting lines for Stache before the Captain comes on board. He even is shown to correct Stache every now and again when his Captain mixes up words.
Seems to speak a tiny bit of French, as he refers to Stache’s style as ‘comme il faut’, though he could also just be using the phrase itself.
Frequently comes up with the plans Stache uses in his plots, even suggests the idea that the trunks were swapped. He doubts himself on his own ideas, frequently referring to his ideas as ‘stupid’, but nonetheless Stache accepts them wholeheartedly.
Is the only character other than Stache to break the fourth wall.
Pretty much the only reason Stache is still alive.
He’s also a ukulele player and a decent singer—and apparently, like all of the pirates, a drag Queen!
I don’t have much to say on the Disney version because they really butchered his character there, but I think it’s important to note that once again, he often suggests the plots that Hook later uses for his evil schemes, such as when he mentioned the drama between Wendy and Tinkerbell. This could be just him gossiping, but it might be more interesting to imagine that he came up with the plot, but wanted to quietly suggest it to Hook in a way that would make Hook think that he himself came up with the idea, so as to save his Captain’s already tainted pride. He’s the ultimate hypeman/husband.
TLDR; Mr. Smee is awesome and I love him and media should do him better. Here’s my version of him as well. Toodle-oo!

Good morning/noon/night! I hope you’re all having a good.. time? Idk but whenever you see this you know what I mean. ANYWAY; I was wondering if you had any fics with Crowley and Aziraphale seeing like a play or a musical? That’s all I really had in mind, no other criteria or anything. Either way, thank you!
Good day! Here are some fics in which they go to the theatre...
Animae Dimidium Meae by NuriaSchnee (T)
After dining at Petronius' restaurant, Aziraphale invites Crowley to the theatre. That evening, Aziraphale discovers how much Crowley loves comedies and... Something more.
Starstuff (what you want to be) by EveningStarcatcher (G)
Aziraphale and Crowley spend a night at the theatre, leading to feelings and confessions
The play referenced is Peter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice
Too Wise To Woo Peaceably by purewanderlust (T)
Crowley's favorite of Shakespeare's works is Much Ado About Nothing, and they've seen it together at least a dozen times.
It's a wonder, then, that it takes them over four hundred years to realize that they have vastly different interpretations of the text.
OR: Five times Crowley and Aziraphale see Much Ado About Nothing.
The Gloomy Ones by Sir_Bedevere (G)
Three Sondheim London premieres that they attend together, one they don't, and one that isn't a premiere at all (but Aziraphale doesn't mind).
On That Note by theinkwell33 (G)
In which Basil, who has sold theater tickets in London for many years, notes with increasing distress that a certain Mr. Fell has never stayed to the end of a performance of The Sound of Music. And his friend (or perhaps enemy?) Mr. Crowley, seems to be of no help whatsoever in this matter.
Or rather, Aziraphale has a long history with evading The Sound of Music, and someone decides it's about time he saw the whole thing.
Give My Regards to Broadway by volunteerfd (G)
Five decades of Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship, as told through the Broadway shows they attended.

Stephanie J. Block — Tony Awards 2019 Speech Transcript Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical
Oh my goodness...
I have always been a theatre nerd— This is not a speech. It is a journal entry from when I was about twelve or thirteen, talking about how I just wanted to desperately be a part of this community, and what it might feel like to win a Tony Award. And thirty-some years later I stand here, and I would tell that little girl, "It was nothing that you expected and everything that you needed."
Thank you to the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League for this honor and this incredible view, oh my God— And to God! For my life. Um. To the goddess Cher, for her life, and her legacy.
To all those who gave their— their time, their talent, their treasure to bring this story to the stage. To Jason Moore and Rick Elice, all of our designers, all of our creatives—the great Bob Mackie. To my backstage team: Kate Sorg, Mel Hanson, Kyle Skillin— I have twenty-nine costume changes and it does not happen without those three people. To my representation. Tim Marshall, Don Burg, Lisa Lucmore, and I love you Patrick and John. To my voice teacher Jill Goodsell— she is an angel, I love you. To my parents, who always said follow your heart.
Baby Vivi, mama won a trophy. But like I always tell you, it's not about winning, little girl. It's about showing up, doing your best, loving all people, and finding joy along the way. And to Sebastian, my husband— you are more than I could ever deserve and I'm telling this on national TV, if you ever leave me I'm going with you!
Thank you very much!

"Water For Elephants" at the Imperial Theatre will enjoy what I think will be a long run on Broadway. Like "Music Man" and "Back to The Future", this wonderful musical will appeal to people of all ages and all walks of life. The music and lyrics by Pigpen Theatre Co. are not overly memorable, the choreography by Jesse Robb is simple and plain, however, the acting, the book by Rick Elice the direction by Jessica Stone and the circus design and acrobatics by Shana Carroll (Cirque du Soleil's Crystal) are outstanding.
Based on the book by Sara Gruen, "Water" takes us to the depression; the circus, the people and animals in the Benzini Brothers Circus are the story-line. We get to see two Jankowski's, the younger Jacob (Grant Gustin) and Mr. Jankowski (Gregg Edelman). He is a veterinarian from Cornell who never finished his studies. He turns out to be a huge help to the penny pinching owner, August (Paul Alexander Nolan) who bought the circus from Benzini back in 1929. The good Doctor would fall smitten with August's wife, Marlena (Isabelle McCalla). August has a foul temper, he is often ruthless with his employees and worse with the treatment of his animals As the plot goes on, both tension and tempers flair, people are pushed to the brink (both literally and figuratively).
What makes "Water For Elephants" a standout is the star cast, the supporting cast and its ensemble. The sound and the projections too are quite remarkable; the costumes (David Israel Reynoso), the scenic design (Takeshi Kata) and the lighting (Bradley King) all complement what is a great evening of theater.
When this musical opens up full throttle is when the audience becomes most enchanted... songs that do its magic are: "Anywhere/ Another Train", "I Choose the Ride", "I Shouldn't Be Surprised", "You've Got Nothing" and "Go Home". It is these songs that have the actors giving its audience full singing and dancing; the lights and sounds are whirlwind. The audience laps up the circus atmosphere, it loves the protagonist/antagonist part of the show. In Jessica Stone's direction, the animals come to life onstage and they become a big part of the story. In both a simple way and a very visual way, "Water For Elephants" should not be missed!
.........................................................................................................................
I recently went to a performance at AMT called "Gallery". Although it was a run through for a later staged performance in New Hampshire, some of the songs and some of the singers were very talented. It will be very interesting to see how it is staged and directed. The premise of the musical is that famous artists have their work projected on the back of the theater while the different actors sing a song about the work that is presented in front of us. Both catchy and pithy, this new musical may take hold.
........................................................................................................................
As this very full Spring season is upon us we welcome up "Tommy", "Suffs", "Hells Kitchen" "The Wiz" and "The Great Gatsby". The two shows that most are waiting for is both "Tommy" and "Cabaret". Early word on "Tommy" is that is the best thing right now on Broadway and it is still in previews! "Cabaret" has been running raves with its great lead actor since it played on London's West End.
Other shows that should delight are "The Mother Play", which has a first rate cast," Mary Jane" and "Uncle Vayna" at Lincoln Center with Steve Carrell in the lead. "Stereophonic" will be coming later in the season along with "Heart of Rock and Roll". Stay tuned! Reviews and more reviews to come!

THE CHER SHOW – BROADWAY MUSICAL – JAN 2ND, 2024 AT THE ARSHT CENTER

“I’ve lived too long and done too much.”
                                               Cher – 2023
Tumblr media
As an entertainment icon, Cher cannot be denied. For over 7 decades she has been at the forefront of popular culture. Throughout her career, she has been more ‘out than in’ but never done. Her self-description of being a ‘bumper car’, may seem a one-off comment, though nevermore true. Whenever something she’s tried has failed, she merely moves in a different direction. Her story is one of legend and lends itself perfectly to a Broadway Show.
The Tony Award winning musical THE CHER SHOW opened this evening at the Arsht Center in Miami for an exclusive run. Being a self-proclaimed Cher snob, I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy the production, with good reason. After all, there’s a lot of musical ‘hits’, personal misses, and a life well lived (two marriages, countless awards, a movie career) to cover in a 2 1/2-hour show. Spanning Cher’s life, she is portrayed by three actresses: the younger starlet known as Babe, played by Ella Perez, starts out (1950s and 60s), Lady played by Catherine Ariale, the glamourous pop star (1970s), Star played by Morgan Scott is the quintessential icon (1980s and 90s). Together they tell the tale of Cherilyn Sarkisian. Engaging one another throughout the show, spurring each other on with girl power galore, never say die, never give up interludes. However, it is the masterful costumes designed by Bob Mackie that really steal the show. They are nothing short of stunning. The show, based on Rick Elice’s book, is cliché as times with a dose of fluff. Of course, Cher is resilient, a powerhouse, a force of nature. That is the essence of Cher, herself. We knew that going in. So, there is no great surprise. No deep delving into the real woman we’ve all come to adore.
The secondary characters in the show do have some worthwhile moments. Lucy Werner as Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt is a hoot. Giving motherly advice throughout, has some of the best lines. Tyler Pirrung as Bob Mackie is perfectly cast. Lorenzo Pugliese as Sonny Bono, is well played bringing out some of his Svengali nuances. Which in truth were not endearing and at times annoying. Mike Bindeman as Gregg Allman, (Cher’s second husband and member of the Allman Brothers band), appears lost between the scuffle of bad lines and an odd musical sparring with Bono for Cher’s hit song “Dark Lady.”
In all, the women who portrayed Cher were all in and performed their hearts out. The songs performed presented a good array of her hits and a few lesser-known tunes only die-hard Cher fans may know. If you’re a Cher fan you will enjoy the evening. The audience tonight included all ages and left with smiles on their faces humming “Believe,” as they exited the theater. So, if you ‘believe in life after love,’ THE CHER SHOW is a must see.

From the EW article:
“The Flash star Grant Gustin to make Broadway debut leading Water for Elephants
The Glee actor will play Jacob opposite Shucked's Isabelle McCalla as Marlena.
By Maureen Lee Lenker Published on November 3, 2023
Broadway is about to get a little flashier.
EW can exclusively announce that Grant Gustin, best known to audiences as Barry Allen on the CW's The Flash and villainous Warbler Sebastian on Glee, will make his Broadway debut this spring in a new musical adaptation of Sara Gruen's bestselling novel Water for Elephants.
Gustin will star as Jacob opposite Isabelle McCalla (The Prom, Shucked) as Marlena. The cast will also feature Gregg Edelman as Mr. Jankowski, Paul Alexander Nolan as August, Stan Brown as Camel, Joe De Paul as Walter, Sara Gettelfinger as Barbara, and Wade McCollum as Wade.
"This was my original dream as a kid," Gustin tells EW of making his Broadway debut. "I started tap dancing first as an 8-year-old and then theater at 10, and this is where I always wanted to be. It's very surreal and exciting and terrifying and all the appropriate emotions. I'm beyond thrilled to join the company. I can't wait to start rehearsals and meet everybody and get on stage again."
With a book from Rick Elice (Jersey Boys) and a score from PigPen Theater Company, Water for Elephants follows the story of Jacob Jankoswki (Gustin), as he remembers his life from a nursing home in old age. As a young man, Jacob, an aspiring veterinarian hops a train, which turns out to be a circus train. There, he befriends Camel (Brown), who gets him a job with the circus, and finds a life beyond his wildest dreams with the cruel animal trainer August and his beautiful wife and circus performer, Marlena (McCalla), whom Jacob falls for.”
