❝ And what did you think I was like? ❞  Spock inquires, a tilt of the head with their gaze locked on Riker. Only an eyebrow is raised, but all other displays of emotion are controlled. Spock is every bit as vulcan as they wanted to seem, never giving any indication beyond scientific curiosity. Even that was a stretch as they gaze towards @moonshadowed. No indication of their thoughts, but there is a ghost of a feeling that they may call amusement, but that is an earth emotion.   ❝ What were you expecting? Indulge me for a moment, Commander.❞
❝ you’re not what i thought you’d be like. ❞   - from Riker!

Listen, if the Picard show ended with a flashback to the night Beverly found out she was pregnant and Wesley shows up and tells her she has to tell Picard right then and there and then everything changes and we jump back to the present where everyone is happy and Picard isn't a husk of the person he used to be and is happily married to Beverly and they are out doing doctor's without borders and archeology things and everyone is still friends and Riker's son isn't dead and he and Deanna are the loving couple they always have been and the Federation isn't a cartoon villain organization and they put Data's consciousness in a new golem (or B4, as God intended)
I'd be fine with it. Thrilled actually.
I'll take a double order of Nexus level retcon to go please.
(I just realized I basically described the post Nemesis books)

The Defector (And His Doctor) - Part One
We all know why this happened. SOUP FOR THE SOUP GODS. This will be 2 definite chapters (with maybe an epilogue if I’m feeling particularly loquacious once chapter 2 is up). I followed the main story of this episode pretty closely, so if you haven’t seen ST:TNG S3E10 “The Defector” you have been warned that this contains major spoilers!
Cross-posted to AO3 here.
~*~
Beverly Crusher (ST:TNG) x Alidar Jarok (ST:TNG)
[A/N: The second chapter will have smut, so 18+ ONLY, MINORS DNI!!!]
Warnings: Interspecies romance, spoilers for ST:TNG S3E10 “The Defector”, flirting, Jarok is a charmer, attraction at first sight, mention of injuries, but nothing too graphic, Jarok flirts with his doctor while she treats him, mild innuendo, brief sexual thoughts, Jarok swears in Klingon, Riker swears in Romulan.

~*~
**Day One**
Walking shakily off the transporter pad in his singed uniform, Admiral Alidar Jarok registered the presence of two Human Starfleet officers and one Klingon.
“I must see your Captain immediately,” he said wincing slightly. Talking made the burns on his face and neck sting with a ferocity he hadn’t experienced since his years in the field over a decade prior.
The Human officer with a beard spoke up as he moved to intercept the Romulan.
“We’ll take you to Sickbay,” the Human stated. Jarok noted three gold pips on his collar. Ah, he was a Commander, then. “After that–”
“This cannot wait! I have information vital to your survival,” the Admiral exclaimed, and the Commander looked at the Klingon officer. Why the delay? Did they think he had just been chased across the Neutral Zone by a warbird for the thrill of being pursued?
“Very well,” he said, reluctantly tapping his combadge. “Captain Picard and all senior staff, please report to the briefing room immediately. Riker out.”
When the Commander - Riker he’d said his name was - closed the channel, he turned back to Jarok and stood a little straighter.
“What’s your name and rank?”
Jarok had prepared for this. He’d spent time prior to the warbird’s pursuit devising a plausible cover story. He doubted that a Starfleet Captain would ever listen to Admiral Alidar Jarok, the Commanding Officer in charge of the Norkan Campaigns. He had it on good authority that the Federation had that set of battles listed as massacres, so he hoped they’d listen to a lesser man without his colorful history.
“I am Sub-lieutenant Setal, a logistics clerk for one sector,” he answered as the Commander escorted him out of the transporter room. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but Jarok had the nagging feeling that these Starfleet officers were going to be slow to listen. He only hoped he hadn’t put his faith in the wrong people.
--
“The humiliating defeat at the Battle of Cheron has not been forgotten. The new leaders have vowed to discard the treaty and claim the Neutral Zone,” Jarok warned, glancing meaningfully around the staff gathered at the conference table. “Nelvana Three is just the first step.”
“You’re saying an entire base has already been established there?” Riker’s skepticism was offensively obvious, but Jarok ignored it for the sake of making his point clear.
“In forty-eight hours, the reactor core will be online,” he confirmed, but none of the officers seemed convinced.
“So the Federation sensors that monitor the Neutral Zone just missed it?” The Commander asked, but Jarok showed no outward reaction.
“It would seem so. In two days, a fleet of Romulan ships will be within striking distance of fifteen Federation sectors,” the Admiral said, hoping the gravity of the situation would hit them quickly. The more time they wasted on this discussion, the less they would have to stop the base’s construction and prevent a war. War was the inevitable outcome of a move like this. Surely they were aware of that inescapable conclusion as he was?
“The Federation will not permit that,” the Klingon officer growled.
“Then it is war that we’re talking about, isn’t it?” Jarok interjected with a hint of impatience. “Destroy the base now and the threat is over.”
After a slightly tense pause, the Captain of the Enterprise spoke up.
“Well, I’m sure you are fatigued by your ordeal, and you require medical attention,” Picard stated. The Admiral blinked. “Lieutenant Worf, will you accompany Sub-lieutenant Setal to Sickbay? We will attend to your quarters.”
He was being dismissed already? But they had barely asked him anything at all!
“No doubt you will wish to question me further?” Jarok inquired, but the Captain seemed reluctant, despite the answering ‘no doubt’ that he was given in response. The Admiral followed Worf out of the briefing room, allowing his attention to shift to his curiosity about the Klingon’s presence in Starfleet on the flagship.
Vaguely, as they walked down the corridor, he heard the sound of his ship exploding from his auto-destruct sequence. It was done, then. This was truly his only refuge. He must make sure that his actions were worth the consequences.
As Jarok, Worf, and the security officer accompanying them entered the medical bay, the Romulan was ordered to stand near an empty biobed in the center of the room. He did as he was told, and after a moment’s wait, a Human woman with a head of hair resembling fire turned the corner carrying medical instruments. Their eyes met, and Jarok could do no more than blink in astonishment.
“Doctor Crusher, Sub-lieutenant Setal requires assistance,” the Klingon stated, and Jarok smiled as the woman he’d been admiring set all but one instrument on a nearby tray and made her way to him.
“My, what pretty doctors the Federation has,” the Romulan crooned as she gestured for him to have a seat. Perhaps his exile wouldn’t be as bad as he believed it would be.
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to stand near exploding plasma conduits, Sub-lieutenant?” She teased as she scanned him with a medical tricorder.
“Oh, many times, but, unfortunately, in this instance it was unavoidable,” he murmured giving her a small smile. The movement stung his already burned face, but he didn’t care. He’d repeat it a thousand times if only to hear the lovely little huff of laughter that came from her as she shook her head and picked up another tool. Soft fingertips brushed against his cheek, steadying his head so that she could begin her work. “Have you ever been told, Doctor, that your touch alone could cure any ailment?”
“Oh, I’ve heard that once or twice over the years,” she said, and if Jarok wasn’t very much mistaken, he thought she rather enjoyed his praise.
“I’m willing to bet that this is the first time you’ve heard such a sentiment from a Romulan. Is that not so?” He asked glancing up at her to find a smile settled across those lovely lips of hers. He wanted to bite them, to feel them against his skin.
That impulse startled him somewhat. He’d only just met this woman! He couldn’t simply throw her atop an empty biobed and ravish her. Obviously, his ordeal with the warbird had unsettled him more than he’d supposed it might. He desperately needed to calm down.
“Perhaps,” she replied, but before they could speak further, the door to Sickbay hissed open to reveal an irritated Commander Riker.
“Your ship just exploded, Setal,” the Human ground out. Ah, they must have been preparing to board it as he’d predicted. He’d made the right decision, then.
“I set the auto-destruct sequence before I left the ship,” Jarok replied calmly as the Doctor moved farther to the side, giving them space to talk while she worked.
“Why?” What a foolish question! If this was the standard for a Federation Commander, then Jarok truly had chosen poorly.
“Wouldn’t you do the same to prevent your ship from being captured?”
Riker looked completely irate as he took half a step closer to the Romulan.
“Excuse me for being a little confused, Setal, but I thought you were defecting.” The accusation in the Human’s tone made Jarok bristle despite himself. Nevertheless, he forced his voice to hold onto some small measure of calm.
“I am not a traitor. All you can see is the opportunity to exploit me. The Federation credo: exploitation! You couldn’t get aboard my ship fast enough,” he murmured. “Strip it down! What secrets might it reveal that we can use? You are a short-sighted people.”
He felt Doctor Crusher’s gentle hands against his scalp trying to hold his head in place.
“Can’t you understand? I came to stop a war–”
“If you could just hold still?” The doctor’s gentle hands gripped his shoulder as he began to rise to his feet, and he looked reflexively over at her. By the Elements, she could tame a raging Klingon targ with those beautiful blue eyes! Unable to look away, he submitted to her request easily, resuming his seat just in time to earn him a smile from his lovely medic.
Oh, he wanted more of those from her...
As her instruments returned to work and he was forced to look away, she spoke again.
“With your metabolism, this will heal in a few minutes,” she estimated, but the Admiral thought he heard a hint of amazement in her tone. Was she as curious about his biology as he was about hers?
“Thank you, Doctor,” he replied turning to look at her again once she released her hold on his chin. “How fortunate that you know something of Romulan medicine.”
“Yes, I had a chance to gain some experience recently.” Her cryptic remark paired with a glance at the Klingon officer confirmed his suspicions.
“Ah, yes. The incident at Galorndon Core. The two officers...” He was going to compliment her on her technique and her obvious skill given the lack of further knowledge about his anatomy, but he was interrupted.
“You are aware of a great deal for a logistics clerk!” Worf growled accusingly, and Jarok’s jaw clenched.
“It was common knowledge. I can show you my rating code.”
“Forged credentials are a simple matter for a spy,” the Klingon stated, and Jarok smirked as he turned to face Riker.
“Why do you allow this Klingon petaQ to walk around in a Starfleet uniform?” Worf bristled beside him.
“You are lucky this is not a Klingon ship. We know how to deal with spies.”
Empty threats had never bothered him before, and this was no exception.
“Remove this tohzah from my sight,” Jarok ordered flippantly, waving his hand in dismissal.
“Your knowledge of Klingon curses is impressive, but as a Romulan might say, only a veruul would use such language in public,” Riker retorted, and Jarok glanced at the man curiously. How would a Human know his people’s profanity? They had so little contact, after all... “Mister Worf, please see to the security arrangements for our guest’s stay.”
After a long moment, Worf acknowledged the order and left Sickbay. The Romulan couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his lips.
“You find something amusing?” The Commander sounded slightly less than entertained himself.
“Lieutenant Worf. I like him. To be more precise, I understand him. He’s a warrior. Proud, fearless, living only for combat,” Jarok said as he stood. “Exactly the type that will get us all killed, if we’re not careful.”
Moments later, when Riker had escorted Jarok to his quarters and left him to his own devices, the Admiral couldn’t help but wonder how all of this would unfold. Checking that his felodesine chip was still in the hidden compartment of his boot where he’d stowed it before, he gazed out to the stars.
He was committed, now, to a path that was only partially lit in front of him as he walked upon it. Depending what he came upon as he forged his way forward, he would either be vindicated or...well, the other outcome lay in the palm of his hand in the form of a little orange disk.
--
As soon as Sub-lieutenant Setal had left the medical bay, Beverly noticed that Nurse Ogawa was stealing furtive glances at her. Oh no, she knew what that look meant. The women had been friends for too long for her not to.
“Something on your mind Alyssa?” The Doctor feigned ignorance, but the Cheshire grin that spread across the nurse’s lips was all the confirmation she needed about what was on her mind.
“Well, Doctor, I...I might be mistaken, but Setal seemed quite taken with you,” Ogawa said as she placed a few of the medical tricorders into their storage slots. “When you got him to sit back down, he looked at you as though he was seeing an angel.”
Beverly let that thought roll around in her mind for a moment, replaying the memory a few times. He had seemed somewhat more open than she’d expected. What surprised her, though, was his lack of argument when she asked him to stay still. He’d fought hard against practically everything that Will and Worf had said to him. Why would he acquiesce to her suggestions so easily?
“Perhaps he just knows not to argue with a medical professional,” Beverly stated brushing off Alyssa’s suggestion as if she had taken no pleasure in the way he’d looked at her.
“Picard to Crusher. I need you on the bridge, Doctor. Bring the results of Setal’s scans.”
Her musings would just have to wait for now. She tapped her combadge as she crossed to her office.
“Acknowledged, Captain. On my way.” Gathering the supplies that she needed, she met Jean-Luc at one of the science stations. He, Data, and Geordi were analyzing the sensor readings they’d taken when the Enterprise first encountered Setal’s ship. Geordi pointed out several moments when the warbird could have destroyed the Sub-lieutenant, but instead kept their distance.
“I don’t think they wanted to catch up,” LaForge said turning his visor toward Beverly who remained unconvinced.
“And yet they fired at the scout ship,” she pointed out as the icons of both the warbird and the smaller ship replayed their sequence again. “They could have killed him.”
“Not necessarily, Doctor,” Data said as he pointed out the trajectory of the shots. “The Romulans have the same capability to direct the impact of their weapons as we do.”
If that was true, then if they’d wanted to destroy Setal’s ship, they could’ve done so easily at any time. So...why didn’t they? Beverly didn’t like the answer to that question one bit.
“Is there a possibility the wound could be self-inflicted?” Picard asked as he looked at the Doctor. She’d known the Captain for so long that she couldn’t help but wonder if he could see what was going through her mind. Could he read her as easily as she felt like he could? Was it possible that he could tell how she was already beginning to feel about Setal? Her attraction to the Romulan felt like a brand positioned squarely over her face.
“They’re very bad burns. I hardly think–” A sterner look from Jean-Luc silenced her protests. As much as she liked Setal, she had to remain objective. There was still a chance that he was a spy sent to draw them into a war. That tactic wouldn’t be an uncommon one for his people.
“A possibility?” He asked quietly, and she could do no more than reluctantly nod her head. The realization felt like a splash of cold water dousing the small spark that had only just begun to form. When she climbed into bed that night, her dreams were filled with phaser fire, plasma burns, and a smiling Romulan Sub-lieutenant whispering sweet words while brandishing a knife behind his back.

IT'S TIME FOR. a star trek update. and BOY am i behind. wednesday we watched tng's "frame of mind," friday we watched ds9's "progress" and tng's "suspicions," and last night we watched ds9's "if wishes were horses." i am so thrilled to announce that despite the high amount of episodes including tng episodes i have almost NOTHING to complain about this update. like a little, but not much.
frame of mind (tng):
first of all we must acknowledge this gifset, which according to the timestamp i saw with my eyeballs near the end of january which (and i checked) was right after the episode where picard is like yeah worf should kill himself. IN the course of the episode worf asks riker to assist with his suicide which is both the most horrible and romantic thing that's ever happened with them. so i went into the ship tag. found it most bereft except for this gifset. i have been DYING to know for a MONTH AND A HALF what's going on in this ep. i finally cracked recently and read the summary which only made me more excited.
so. drumroll. DID THE EP DELIVER..............???
yes.
yes, with VERY minor caveats.
i think my only real complaint about this episode is that it was a me problem. like i was picturing some scene where worf tenderly (for him) talks riker down from a fit of madness and also he was the real worf. i built it up too much in my head. that's not what happened. in my mind palace it is. i'm a little tempted to do a rewrite of it to make it happen but i barely have time to breathe so that will remain a wistful thought for now. like, i knew the enterprise setting wasn't real, but regardless of the amount of worf/riker (e deanna) ship content it was just kind of disappointing to learn that the mental facility was ALSO not real because the worf and data that rescued riker were not real and the beverly that snuck in to see him was also not real and his experiences there also weren't "real" in the physical sense, even though he very much did still experience them. very "it was all a dream!" of them
OTHER THAN THAT. i was really into it. i loved everything about it. i loved riker's break from reality. i loved that crazy lady with the spoon. i loved how even data got weirded out at riker's antics. i love that the part of riker that is his feelings is represented by deanna and the part of him that is action is represented by worf WORF E RIKER E DEANNA REAL! i didn't like picard being his logic. spock should be everybody's logic. get that guy outta here
also, what a great touch to have very chill very normal very laid back riker be like yeah if i don't tear this set apart with my bare hands before i sleep i really WILL go crazy 🙃
side var didn't beverly say people were coming to clean it up in the morning...what happened to the ship cleaning itself smh. justice for the invisible janitors and housekeepers of starfleet
also, why did this episode make me slightly into riker and beverly as friends with benefits...the whole trill boyfriend situation adds so much fun complication to that as well depending on a multitude of varying and equally valid interpretations of that event. like, girl, forget picard's two-timing ass. what's he ever done for you except knock you up with an affair baby. join the worf e riker e deanna polycule. they could make better husbands. shit, i could make a better husband. forget him girl! you don't need him
progress (ds9):
holy fucking shit.
this episode BLEW me away. easily a must-see on my spreadsheet, when i (eventually?) catch up. every single thing they do with kira is AMAZING.
the old guy was so instantly likable. he was likable even when he was being sexist BECAUSE he was being sexist specifically to wind kira up because kira was playing bad guy. their chemistry was so good. i was just as worried about him as kira was the whole episode long
what a brilliant way to discuss war, not by showing the violence or the gore or the death but by simply showing us this guy who won't leave his farm and sleeptalks during his nightmares and these other two who can't speak but WILL kill you with pitchforks. like, you have "chain of command" with picard and the four lights and then you have this, and both of them are so important in our understanding of the cardassians and what they do.
sisko was so absolutely kind to kira. like, he outlined her struggle perfectly - she's no longer the underdog, and in some ways that sucks, because she now has no idea how to behave. her morals and her logic and her heart are all telling her different things.
AND LIKE. SISKO. KNEELING DOWN. TO BE EYE TO EYE WITH HER. i cannot possibly express how important that is. HE IS SO GOOD!!!
i'm actually really glad she got teary eyed but DIDN'T cry. we just watched her ugly cry in that episode with kai opaka and i think to do it twice together so soon would have been too much. but it DID need that emotional beat, and they struck the perfect balance.
the through-line of the fucking kiln. every time i saw them building it. wah.
the ending was so shocking and so horrible...actually, my one tiny nitpick with this ep is that there wasn't really the proper setup for it. the air will be poison if those guys tap the moon, but surely the ostensible utopian starfleet is not gonna tap it with even one holdout...? though i guess bajor isn't in starfleet proper? tng often has too MUCH technobabble and exposition but this didn't have quiiite enough - i feel like forcefields or masks or other scifi tech might have solved this problem and i didn't REALLY believe the only two solutions were to let this guy die on the moon or forcibly relocate him, especially when kira brought up a slower way to get the energy they needed - but maybe that's the point, that she ended the fight before it could become one, idk. i also wish he had said "as long as this house is still standing" a little earlier - having him say it right before the end sort of gave away what kira was gonna do before she did it, though i DIDN'T expect her to start with the kiln.
other than though it was so good. it says so much about the nature of the cardassians as a group, and bajorans as a group, and about kira herself.
also, sorry, jacket coming off hot.
suspicions (tng):
THERE WERE SO MANY WOMEN IN THIS EPISODE??? let's count
beverly, and it's a beverly-centric episode
hot klingon lady who threw beverly around like a sack of flour (again: beverly is bicurious)
VERY snooty vulcan lady with the human??? husband????? sorry but doesn't he have a refractory period how do they get BY during pon farr? ok. none of my business. moving on
nurse ogawa who helped commit women's wrongs
guinan, beverly's confidant and pretend tennis elbow haver...
deanna also had a few lines which i'm choosing to count in the spirit of things
also, that green alien guy? long feng from atla.
anyway, i was tickled with this episode. not only because they finally wrote a ferengi who isn't racist, showed another vulcan/human couple, included a bunch of women, AND gave beverly the main role, but also because the mystery was perfectly done. it gave us just enough information to stay interesting, and i figured out long feng faked his own death RIGHT before the reveal - not early enough to bore me but early enough to make me feel smart
i didn't really understand why beverly chose to end ferengi racism in a field that she wasn't even in but i support her so much. also, she got to do an illegal autopsy and steal a fucking shuttle. GOOD for her
again i want to state that this klingon lady TOSSED HER AROUND it was so fucking sexy. get it beverly. i so rarely have so much fun with a tng episode and we got two good ones in a row!!
if wishes were horses (ds9):
this is a sequel to an episode of tos i mostly don't like, "shore leave." tng also had a "shore leave episode" (the one where picard's mom showed up and i think some ensign got spliced into the floor) so we have done "our thoughts manifest as reality" twice now and i assume will continue to do it in every star trek series going forward. so far i have not liked any of these episodes because of the redundant and irrelevant nature of them (oh look! a random tiger!) but ds9's is probably my favorite out of the three
i just feel like you have the potential to get so real and do such character work when thoughts are manifested as reality and instead it's always this crazy shit. i think tng tried to do it with more gravitas, but it's tng and early tng at that, so i've yet to see star trek do one of these successfully and i doubt i ever will.
ANYWAY. number one complaint with this is of course the fake dax. i think it's really funny that she keeps gently but firmly shooting julian down, and while julian is a likable cringefail loser i NEVER saw him as a creep, not even with repeated attempts to ask her out...and then this happened, and it was very touch and go for a second there. i'm glad his instinct was to fight dax when she was compromised, really horrified when he "gave in," and then was extremely relieved when they were interrupted. he tried i guess. i'm gonna try not to hold it against him. if i can forgive geordi i can forgive julian.
we ALMOST got it working right. dax was like you know julian in a way i kind of feel like we invaded YOUR privacy it's not as though you can help having fantasies and they should have been safe in your head which was like. ok great take actually! we are being adults! but then the fake one showed back up and tried to pick a catfight with the real one and SSSSIGH
keiko and o'briens little daughter is SO cute. i mean she is SO fucking adorable. rumpelstiltskin was easily the dumbest part of this episode but that little baby is so adorable it was almost worth it to see her. i also didn't like that obrien didn't immediately say no as a kneejerk reaction to selling his daughter. girl what's wrong with you
i DON'T like that there's no baseball in the future. number one i refuse to believe americans could ever fall out of love with baseball even if it's only in a "let's bring back this vintage game" kind of way and number two it's one of the only sports i kind of like and understand. sisko being a nerd about an ancient dead sport is so funny though. good for him.
THAT SAID. i was kind of hoping sisko would see his dead wife. we got a great little moment where kira imagined an explosion and a guy on fire, which touched on something she probably actually has seen, and it was a fun way to give a stupid and silly concept some gravitas, but when everything got quiet there at the end i was expecting sisko's wife and no, it was just mr baseball again
shoutout also to odo running around with two real live birds on that set, quark fucking the birds after they turned into ladies, and then odo imagining quark in jail. truly a series of events, though given quark offering to make him a changeling lady friend in the holosuite (refreshing that at least in ds9 they acknowledge it as a sex toy), i kind of expected a serious moment with him too where he got his wish unwillingly.
and finally, i had SUCH a hard time following the plot of this episode.
the ending of this...eh. the power of positive thinking got rid of the rift = funny? the power of positive thinking is why a bunch of aliens showed up to wreak havoc = ehhhhh. the closest we came to having that serious moment i wanted was kira's .5 second scene and it JUST wasn't long enough. probably my least favorite ds9 episode yet, if we don't count the one with q, but still not as excruciating as some of tng's duds - it was entertaining enough not to make me hate existing for a single watch.
TONIGHT: tng's "rightful heir" (worf episode???👀) and ds9's "the forsaken" (deeply not looking forward to this...the summary says LWAXANA TROI is supposed to be mencing my best boy odo. please save him please get the tng out of my ds9 please please pleeease)

Dating Janeway HC's
for @eunoiaastralwings requested through DMs Summery: dating janeway would be like Pairing: Janeway x Reader Reader pronouns: She/her
Tumblr media
-a Starfleet ship going by Starfleet rules to quote Starfleet Regulation 256.15: Starfleet officers shall display behavior befitting an officer at all times - which could be see as it isn't befitting of a captain to be involved with someone of lower ranking so Janeway and you would hide your relationship it was rather thrilling really
-given the captain is the captain most of the time you are in her quarters as if someone came looking for her it could be easily written off as a private meeting to discuss urgent matters and it would be rather odd if she where not in her quarters
-you don't get date nights often the closest you get is with velocity or racket ball because they can be easily written off as well or in Janeway's quarters one time Tuvok walked in and you had your arm half way up her replicator fixing it for your dinner but you both suspect the Vulcan knows and just has kept it secret
-Tom has betting pools to see who the captain will be with Chakotay, that hologram from fair haven or a alien they come across
-pet names in public neither of you are big on them as your difference in rank but alone you definatly have pet names
-Janeway would call you her queen if you where feeling down and needed comforting
-PDA is for in private and behind closed doors that's not to say Tuvok has a habit of breaking those doors by accident you are just both lucky that he is a Vulcan and he respect the captain to much to let this get out and he stays out of betting pools
-The doctor probably also knows as you consult in him quite a lot and you have made this Doctor-patient confidentiality and you threatened his program if he didn't keep is secret although he has blurted it out a few times in the captains private company
-She hates sending you on away missions every time you leave the ship you can be in danger if you come back injured she will be worried and since the doctor knows she can show it in sickbay while watching over your sleeping form
-if the crew does find out it is either to a Q or not being careful enough and ending up in a uniform switch lets just say the doctor wins Tom's betting poll and gets his 'tee time' for his golf which make you both glare at him
"Well I didn't tell anyone" the doctor said "Where's the doctor patient confidentiality if you bet on it" you snapped to him "You betrayed my trust doctor" Janeway said "I am going to delete all your singing subroutines and your golf ones" he hissed to him "No wait we can work this out without that" The doctor said holding his hands up
-you are either in engineering or the science division
-you spend your time crawling to and from Janeways quarters in the Jeffares tubes unless it is to fix her replicator then you can be seen passing in to fix it and out after you fixed it or if you are in science medical to catch her for her physicals after all starfleet captains hate physicals
-Tom teases you endlessly when he learns you are with the captain he also trys and gets you to talk the captain to approve his shenanigans which you refuse
-Neelix doesn't get the big deal about it until he is explained it by Tuvok when he is annoying the vulcan with questions
-when voyager gets the time to communicate with earth you decide to consult with data now that you have learnt the doctor is not trust worthy, data would never betray your trust on purpose and there is no way he could tell anyone on your ship although next time you call it's Riker and he is teasing you about it you sigh as data must of asked him out of confusion so now your relationship with Janeway is circling around the senior staff of the Enterprise

Captain, my captain, my captain...
Started my latest rewatch of Star Trek Voyager yesterday and it reminded me of the first time it was broadcast on the CW network in my area. I was intrigued with Janeway.
I had grown up on reruns of Star Trek and yes, I thought Kirk was awesome as a starship captain. I liked Spock more as a character, but honestly, I loved how Kirk, Spock and Bones complemented each other. Sure they disagreed at times but they had each other's back.
Even as a child, I noticed that Kirk was very interested in nearly every pretty woman that crossed his path.
When The Next Generation came along, I was surprised, and dubious at first, when I saw that Picard was an older, grumpier captain that didn't run after the ladies as much. I mean, yes there were love interests, but he came across as more intellectual, more restrained, more mature, who was more likely to converse with women than make googly eyes at them. Once I got used to Picard, I thought, "Yeah, makes sense!" Of course, I ended up seeing Riker as the Kirk substitute. Brash, brave, and always looking for a good time when not on duty.
When Deep Space Nine came around, I was thrilled that the commander was black, though I thought it was a put down to have him start off as a commander and not a captain. He was his own man. He knew who he was, where he stood, and he let people know when he disagreed with someone! And he punched Q! AND he was a single dad! And he was so multi-faceted, he kept surprising me.
Then Voyager came along just a couple of seasons behind DS9. And I saw who the captain was and I have to admit, I was disappointed for a bit. Yes, a female captain, but she was white. I thought, "why can't she be black?" The Next Generation had an episode with a black female captain and so I thought it was dumb not to have a black female captain be the star. But after a while, I figured the writers or producers were just too chicken to do it yet. Eventually, I became attached to Janeway just as I had to the other captains.
Imagine my disappointment when the next series didn't go forward but backward in the timeline and they had a white male captain again. It's definitely not my favorite series in the franchise. T'pol and the beagle made it bearable. And Jeffrey Combs, because he is awesome as any alien.
Sad that it took so long to get Michael Burnham in Discovery and Just like Sisko, it took her a good long while to get to the Captain's chair! Yargh!
Anyway, these are the thoughts that run through my head doing a rewatch.
Have fun with whatever you are watching right now!

So I was thinking about Laris, and how obviously she should dump Picard's ass, because she deserves better.
Then another thought occurred to me: what if "better" was Beverly Crusher?
Hear me out.
For starters, they have so much in common. They've both lost husbands. They're both badasses who've been around the galaxy a few times and seen some shit. They're both healers/nurturers at heart. And they've both been personally victimized by shitty boyfriend Jean-Luc Picard.
There's a tiny bit of tension when they first meet (don't ask me how or when they meet, I haven't figured that out yet), since Beverly is kind of unintentionally the reason Jean-Luc left Laris the last time. Beverly feels bad about it, but Laris is like, I told him to go, and pretty soon they get over that.
They initially bond over some of the things I mentioned earlier - starting with their experiences with Picard, and quickly moving to sharing cool or weird or dangerous stuff they saw out in space that one time. They drink and laugh and bond, and at the end they decide, hey, we should do this again sometime.
Beverly gets back into dance or theater (or both), and Laris takes up some hobby that isn't cleaning up after Picard. They get together for drinks or lunch a few times before Beverly mentions a show, and Laris asks if she can come see it. Beverly is delighted, and manages to get Laris one of the best seats in the house. This soon becomes a regular thing.
(Deanna comes for a girls' weekend one time, and Beverly invites Laris along, and boy does Deanna notice the feelings emanating off of Beverly every time Laris walks into the room. Deanna says nothing at the time, because it's not her business - though she of course spills the tea to Will the second she gets home.)
Beverly and Laris are stargazing and laughing and sipping wine together one evening when Beverly is finally able to recognize the feelings she's been developing for Laris. This takes her aback for a moment, but then she decides, fuck it, I'm not a young woman anymore, I don't have the time or patience to be scared of this. So she kisses Laris. And to no one's surprise, Laris kisses her back.
At first they pretend that this is a no pressure sort of situation. Beverly has her son and her work, and Laris has... something that's also important (seriously, why didn't they give us more for Laris?). But pretty soon they realize that they both want the pressure. They both want the commitment. That's precisely the thing they always wanted from Picard but never got.
Nothing changes drastically between them at first. They were already basically a couple - always spending their free time together, showing up at events together, etc. Now there's just more kissing involved. (Also the sex is incredible.)
They don't try to hide anything, either, because at this point in their lives, what's the point? Most everyone is thrilled for them. It throws Jean-Luc for a bit, to see his two exes dating each other. But it doesn't take that long before he, too, is happy for them.
At some point they decide to get married. It's a quiet and simple affair, with mostly the crew of the Enterprise-D in attendance. To Beverly's delight, even Wesley manages to find the time to show up for his mother's wedding, so she has both her sons there with her. Will Riker officiates, and Data insists on a dance with Beverly during the reception.
Beverly stays at Starfleet for a while, using her new admiralty to pioneer medical relief efforts for the people and planets who need it most - even those outside Starfleet jurisdiction. Sometimes she gets to go off-world to help directly, and usually Laris comes along as well. Laris has a job, too, not with Chateau Picard (somebody come up with something for Laris, I'm begging you). They keep busy with their hobbies, and spending time with friends, and traveling to see all the best parts of Earth.
And sometimes, they just enjoy the peace and quiet of their house in the countryside somewhere. They've been through enough, and sometimes all they need is just to be together.
Though you know they're also looking forward to the grandchildren ;)

"And You Love Every Second of It” - William Riker x Reader
Summary: The hour is later and Riker wants to cuddle, luckily for him that is not something his partner will complain about.
Word Count: 680+
Rating: SFW
Warning(s): You're in bed together. Riker is flirting. Clothes are on.
Author's Note: Maybe one day when I am less of a coward I will write an extension for this.
Tumblr media
- - - - -
Climbing into bed and settling with your back supported by a pillow and the headboard; you reach for the PADD on your nightstand, hoping to get a couple chapters into your favorite book before having to retire for the night.
Swiftly becoming completely engrossed by the literature, you fail to hear the soft slide of the door. Very few had the ability to enter your quarters without command - and only one who would do so with the hour so late.
William Riker takes in the sight in front of him as he steps unimpeded into your quarters. Warmth floods his chest at the comfort this place - you - give him. The quarters are well-kept, not messy by any degree; yet they were clearly lived in, decorated and arranged to your liking.
You had very clearly made a home out of the Enterprise; and Riker was thrilled to be a part of it.
Riker does take notice that you don't seem aware of his presence, a notion that plants an idea in his head and with only a little more thought springs him into action. Trying his best to remain unnoticed, he makes his way across the small room to you.
"Will!" You exclaim, the small lilt of amusement in your surprised tone rewarded you with a deep chuckle as Riker plucks the PADD from your hands and tosses it onto the nightstand.
Riker dips down to press his lips against your forehead in a quick apology while you try to still your racing heart. It is now that you take the time to notice that Riker is out of uniform. Instead having chosen change into the blue silk sleep-ware that the both of you seemed to favor.
More than amused himself, Riker is quick to crawl into bed with you. His arms slip around your waist, tugging you down the bed slightly. Riker's weight is comfortable against you as he rests his head against your abdomen. A wide smile spread across his face, crinkling the corners of his eyes as he innocently peeks up at you.
"So needy." You breath an exaggerated sigh as you feign annoyance, but the shake of your head and own soft smile betray you. Almost as if on impulse you reach out and start carding your fingers through his soft dark hair.
"And you love every second of it." Riker counters after a moment or two, giving a gentle squeeze to your waist before releasing. Supporting his weight on his hands, Riker raising himself to hover over you, bringing himself closer to you.
"I must, otherwise I wouldn't have let you in here." Quickly catching on to this little game, you pull back just enough to fix Riker with a skeptical look.
Both of you can only contain your composure for so long before you break and the room erupts into shared laughter. Riker regains himself quicker, trailing off as he watches you with eyes full of warmth.
Slowly Riker leans closer, resting his forehead against yours as his eyes close and he breaths a sigh of pure contentment. You reach up to cradle his face, thumbs gently smoothing over the sides of his beard. Eventually, one of his hands comes to rest on your hip almost mirroring the movement of your thumb with his own.
You both stay like that for a few minutes more, simple basking in the presence of each other. Once more Riker pulls away and finally settles himself next to you in bed. Following his lead, you reach for the blanket that has pooled at the end of the bed.
You do your best to cover you both; Riker reaches out to distribute more of the blanket over you - knowing that if he gets cold that is simple a good excuse to hold you closer. Why else would he have opted to stay in your quarters when his own could have more comfortable housed two people? There are some perks to a smaller bed.
Comfortable nestled in with your head against the silk covering his chest, you throw an arm around his waist to hold him in return.
"Love you." You mumble, but the sincerity of your words are not lost. You can feel the rumble in Riker's chest as he give a small hum of acknowledgement. Resting his chin atop your head, you hear Riker breath out:
“Love you too.”

Thoughts on Star Trek: The Next Generation S2
Wow, some pretty obvious changes in S2
Transporting the plague
And Troi has a son
Don’t like the new doctor (what she said to Data in Sick Bay)
And then again what she said to Data later (the bruised emotions comment)
I understand the day-ta v dah-ta thing tho, since pronunciation is regional
I do like the bartender tho
Once again, the new doctor is treating Data like he’s not a living, sentient being who is his own person (referring to him as ‘it’ when he’s sitting right there)
‘No other Federation ship has encountered a hole on space before’ wrong!
The TOS crew did and it was a giant amoeba
But this is not a giant amoeba
This ep got pretty deep v quick
I kinda like Okona
Ofc he’s a criminal
Wait he’s not?
Well is he or is he not?
Data can be funny tho
Not intentionally but still
Ok the way he’s moving his arms is just weird
Riva’s pretty cool
I like him
Oh no!
So how’s he gonna talk to them?
‘It took me moments to learn’ yea Data cus ur an android
So he’s gonna teach them sign to negotiate peace
Ok so we watched this one out of order
Data-centric!! And Geordi too!!
And they’re rping as Sherlock and Watson!
I love this ep
Not thrilled that the doctor is joining them tho
Don’t like the way she treats Data
I mean, you got what you asked for
Another sorta Data-centric ep! Yay!
‘If I only had a heart’ or ‘if I only had a brain’ depends
I feel like Data whistling ‘if I only had a heart’ was supposed to some dramatic reveal
Like, was it not obvious why he was acting like that?
They’re just gonna mess w/ Data now lol
Yet another instance where they maybe could’ve gotten a solution from Bones
Except this crew did a much better job of quarantining the virus and not letting it spread
Wait, how long is Riker gonna leave?
Didn’t think he’d ever leave the Enterprise for an extended period of time
Also, not a huge fan of Morden
He comes off really arrogant
I can’t help but feel like Riker’s eaten Klingon food before
The Klingon crew’s actually pretty chill
The captain varies from moment to moment
Wasn’t expecting to see any Klingon rush to check if Riker was ok
Do not like this man (Maddox)
Again with ppl calling Data ‘it’ while he’s sitting right there
Another quite obvious parallel to a real-world issue
Ik Riker didn’t want to do it but his case legit had me tearing up a bit I thought he was gonna win
But he did also sorta kinda get around it cuz he was arguing that Data is a machine, not whether or not he should have rights and whether or not he’s property
Like no one’s denying that Data is a machine
We wanna know if he has the same rights as us
Spoilers! He does!
I’m so glad Data gets to stay!
NASA? What’re they doing here?
What kind of Trelane situation is this?
A hotel?
A novel! Unfortunately it’s a badly written one apparently
Data in a cowboy hat!
I love the way Data adapts his actions to his surroundings. It always ends up really funny
Oh boy… more time loops… (sarcastic)
And another Picard? Ok…
He just- vanishes. Sure
And now Riker is leaving?
He can’t leave!
What’s up w/ Worf?
Is it maybe seeing Riker’s issues w/ his father is bringing up memories of issues w/ Worf’s father? Or smth else
Riker’s dad and Dr. Pulaski are a thing?
Physical fights lead to much-needed talks (only in fiction)
Ofc he’s staying
Aww, Data has a pen pal!
She’s really sweet too!
Now they have an excuse to help the planet
Oh boy it’s Q again
He wants to be a crewman on the ship?
And he knows Guinan
It’s the Borg!
That was not a very eventful encounter
tbf they probs would’ve died if Q hadn’t teleported them out of there sooo…
Picard and Wesley on a 6 hour shuttle rider together
That’s gonna go well
Imagine being struck on a shuttle w/ your capt and he casually confesses to living through being stabbed in the heart, and that he laughed at it
I can’t imagine what Wesley thought abt that
Geordi understood all that? Cus I didn’t understand and I feel like I’m supposed to
Lemme guess, Pulaski is the one qualified enough to perform that part of the surgery
Oh look… I was right
Again w/ the ppl from the past
That is a weird manifest
So where’s all the tech?
Oh, there’s all the tech
Clones
Why’s it a problem that Riker said no? There are ~400 other crewmen on board who might say yes
Woah, fish ppl
‘They’re a handsome race’ sure Worf
Oh, not her
I cant imagine how embarrassed both Picard and Deanna must be whenever her mother is on board
Picard saves himself by inviting Data to come info-dump, love it!
And then he avoids her by role playing on the holodeck
Love that Data’s like ‘hol up, if we’re going to the holodeck we’re doing this right!’
He loves dressing up in little outfits for the holodeck!
Ooh, the way she’s acting is so weird
And the whole thing w/ Riker
‘Quadruples it’ ‘or more’ ‘or more? You never told me that!’ ‘I didn’t want to frighten you’
I love their relationship when it gets focus
That was, like, the quickest thwarting of an assassination attempt ever
If she doesn’t wanna leave Worf why didn’t she just take the oath?
I don’t like this dude
They’re really gonna make Riker fight in that?
That sucks
Yes, you did bust him up Data
What was…the point of this ep?
Honestly I didn’t really think much of it bc there wasn’t a whole lot going on
But it is kinda weird seeing Data in the first ep and comparing him to now
You can really tell how much they’ve fleshed out the character
Ofc this goes for any of them, it’s just most noticeable (to me) w/ Data
Also, seen 6 CMOs so far. Of those 6, 3 have used the transporters. Of those 3, 2 don't like them. No one’s else takes issue with them
Conclusion: it’s a doctor thing. they know too much abt the human(oid) body
And with that ends S2

A thought on Picard S3E4 No Win Scenario
Since watching ep 3, I've been wondering who would save the ship. I'm thrilled to find the answer was EVERYONE TOGETHER, in the best Star Trek tradition
The pivotal moment was Will as captain deciding to go along with the Crusher-Picard plan
What convinced Will? Beverly told him what Deanna would say to him if she were there.
Beverly hasn't seen Deanna in 20 years.
But Will looks at Beverly and knows she's right. Not just that her plan is right, she's right about Deanna. Beverly and Deanna were such close and good friends that after 20 years apart Beverly still knows Deanna that well.
I can't even express half of what it means to me that their FRIENDSHIP SAVED THE SHIP
The friendship between Beverly Crusher and Deanna Troi-Riker.
How beautiful is that.

Tagged by @leebrontide - thank you!
Tagging @anandabrat , @galactic-pirates , @sistersin7 , @a-windsor , and @akittennameddaisy - and whoever else wants to!
Three ships: Bering and Wells, and then a whole lotta empty space, and then Rizzoli and Isles, and... uh... Beverly/Kathryn? Yeah, let's go with them. I have one (1) OTP and then a few couples that make me go "yeah, sure, why not!" 😅
First ship: Deanna Troi and Will Riker, before i even knew what shipping was. I have lost count of how often I have read Imzadi.
Last song I listened to: U Plavu Zoru, by Pink Martini, in my car. I rarely listen to music outside of driving. Pink Martini is such a delightful little orchestra; i love their music.
Last movie I watched: Puss in Boots, in trying to get through all the stuff in my Netflix queue before we cancel our subscription. It was a fun, entertaining romp.
Currently reading: fanfic. I did read a book recently, Legends and Lattes; it was fun - but these days, fanfic is just so much easier than investing in meeting new characters.
Currently watching: right now? Nothing, I'd say. Rewatching a few comfort shows, but not watching something new. For the same reason as books, really. I enjoyed Willow. I'm hesitantly looking forward to Picard S3. I was thrilled at hearing that new The Nevers episodes are coming out. But I'm also very disillusioned with streaming services these days.
Currently consuming: i just had a London 70% dark chocolate ball
Tumblr media
Currently craving: respite. I've had a rough day, and a headache is pending. At least one more hour to go at work, alas.
This is a fun format! Thanks for the tag!

Here is a double drabble for the first day of Promptober! Finally reconnecting with one of my first fandoms, and my first real OTP!
Written for: "Hand holding" for the sfw list of @kinktober2023 "I've got you" for @flufftober "How many fingers am I holding up?" for @whumptober "Shore leave" for @trektober-challenge
Title: Just in case Pairing: (pre) Troi/Riker No warnings Word count: 200
Can be found on AO3!
“Riker to Enterprise.” “Picard here.”
“The planet seems calm but maybe a bit colder than we imagined.” “Good. Keep us updated. Picard Out.”
Riker acknowledged then zipped his parka as high as possible. “Let’s see if this planet is suitable for a few days of shore leave.” Not that everyone would be thrilled about the cold temperatures like Riker -even if just as a reminder from his childhood. Worf certainly wouldn’t.
With that, Riker, Troi and Data started to walk away, only for Troi to walk on a patch of ice and fall down next to rocks.
“Deanna!” Riker exclaimed as he arrived and crouched next to Troi. “Are you alright?” “Yes, I just slipped. There is no reason to panic.” “You are holding your head.” Troi looked surprised but shrugged it off.” Yes, I hit my head. But softly.” “How many fingers am I holding?” “Don’t be ridiculous.” “How many?” “Three.” “Alright,” Riker said, before hauling her up. “Just in case,” he continued, holding out his hand. “Just in case,” she replied, taking it.
They hadn’t walked a meter that Troi almost slipped again. This time, though, Riker helped her stay steady. “I’ve got you,” he said. Always, Imzadi.

it's TNG UPDATE TIME. last night* we watched "birthright" parts i & ii. just this once, i'm not combining them because i can distinctly differentiate between the episodes, they were actually (after all that angst) kind of unconnected, though i would have DIED to have left it on that cliffhanger
* time changed i'm scheduling this to go up when people are awake
birthright part i (tng):
DS9 CROSSOVER! i wish it could have been for both halves. also, i kind of wish odo could have been the one to talk to data even though he has no reason whatsoever to leave. it just would have been so much autism in one room
human brent spiner HORRIBLE to look at. the faces he makes as dr soong (which...why would dr soong be white...was that old man white idr...) remind me of lore's.
however: thrilled that data can dream now. i was so happy also that everyone treated him really niceys. except bashir who microaggressed him one time but i forgive him because it was funny
it was WWWWILD to see tng characters walkin around ds9. i hated tng in my ds9 but i loved ds9 in my tng. i wish they had a budget for a proper crossover. did sisko have to be in the same room as picard again? did o'brien go aboard and say hello? i miss him so bad.
minor deanna and worf moment in this ep when she comforts him over his dad potentially being alive. mwah. i feel like the tng side characters have been non-existent for awhile...first we stopped watching tng as much for ds9, then we got that deanna-only ep, then that picard-only ep, and now the ds9 crossover and the worf-only ep...can we PLEASE get the gang back together
final note i love that worf loves shitty replicator food and also riker's terrible cooking. king.
birthright part ii (tng):
i have complex feelings.
worf's dad plot as a means to get worf to be the pov character for the ethical dilemma of this episode kind of undermined the entire ethical dilemma
the ethical dilemma tng THOUGHT it was presenting was, "if klingons and romulans have escaped the war to live peacefully together, is it right to disrupt their way of life just because their children might choose differently?"
THE ACTUAL DILEMMA IT PRESENTED WAS. IF YOU HAVE SEVENTY-THREE KLINGON PRISONERS OF WAR. actually that's not even a question. they just have them. let's break this down
this romulan guy, unclear if he was the one actually in charge at the khitomer massacre or not (i thought he looked familiar, i looked it up and he previously played a totally different romulan on tng lol), but this guy is running this fucking prison with seventy-three klingons completely at his mercy. yes, they ""asked"" to stay, but they WANTED to die, they ATTEMPTED to die, and they would have CHOSEN to die had the option been given to them, but they're doing this instead in order to keep from bringing consequences down on their families heads. so he has total power over them and he... "marries" one???
i am going to start discussing conception via rape please consider this your warning.
this is of course coming after tasha yar had a FUCKING BABY VIA RAPE in a romulan prison and then got killed for trying to escape. he "married" a klingon woman. ALL RIGHT
even if she thought she loved him and consented to everything SHE IS A PRISONERRR. SHE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO DIE. SHE IS NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE.
like, when worf kissed that girl and realized she was half romulan his revulsion should not have been from the fantasy racism but from realizing she is a rape baby. like, this whole sitch is horrifying
and it really brings into perspective too how lucky worf must have been...he was so young when khitomer happened and yet he's very in touch with his heritage, but something as simple as old klingon stories are considered dangerous by the romulan warden
AND HE IS A WARDEN. again: nobody is allowed to leave where they are. this isn't a peaceful group of equals, conscientious objectors who chose a different way of life. THEY ARE PRISONERS. they're not allowed to look at or even touch any of their old things. they have to find fun and entertainment with old weapons. klingon tai chi classes are NOT allowed
in fact, the REAL ethical dilemma is, is it right to try and force this half-romulan half-klingon girl out of her "home" when it is clear she is happy in here and will be reviled out there? i argue yes because her home IS A PRISON CAMP like girl if spock did it u can too but what do i know
it makes no sense also that these people would be choosing to procreate. if this prison camp is only marginally better than death, or worse than death in some ways but a necessary evil, why bring kids into it??? unless the romulans are the ones making the babies
god this dude even sat at the head of the table and had everyone bring his food to him and then was ready to execute worf for bringing klingon culture into and i repeat the KLINGON PRISON CAMP
anyway, this episode did pop off at a few points. it was cool to see worf help them get back in touch with their own culture and doubly cool to see him get "even" with his like...sort of enemies. ALSO fun to watch that little bootlicking klingon who was sucking that romulan guy's dick finally come to his senses and stand w/ worf
i also loved the part where worf was perfectly happy to die as a klingon rather than live as someone with dishonor...it felt so different from the episode where he tried to kill himself because this time he WAS being honorable and not cowardly. he would have had nowhere to go had he run and he would have been leaving those other klingons behind
i am disappointed though that after all that. worf's dad really was dead. also, how did that guy know where the camp was and why did he tell. ALSO also, how are the klingons gonna get by when they can't tell anyone what bloodline they come from...that's like your picture ID in the klingon world
the point is, as usual, tng almost had something really cool but couldn't get out of its own way and as a result dropped the fucking ball.
NEXT TIME: ds9's "move along home" and "the nagus."

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S2E19 “Manhunt”
Tumblr media
THE PREMISE
The Enterprise is ordered to escort two Antedean ambassadors to a conference on the planet Pacifica. The Antedeans are beamed aboard in a self-induced catatonic state to reduce the stress of space travel along with a plentiful food supply for when they awaken.
En route, the Enterprise is ordered to rendezvous with a shuttlecraft carrying Betazoid telepath ambassador Lwaxana (pronounced loo-axe-anna) Troi, Counsellor Troi's mother, and her manservant Mr Homn. Captain Picard is not exactly thrilled with this arrangement after his previous encounter with her, but Starfleet's instructions insist that she be treated with full diplomatic courtesy. While Picard tries to avoid her advances, Troi explains to Riker that her mother has entered "The Phase," a stage that takes place in the middle of a Betazoid woman's life where her sex drive drastically increases, and that she's searching for a new husband.
MY REVIEW
Hoo boy, that's some... Emmy-level material right there. Wowee.
Yes, you read that right. The premise of this episode is that Troi's mother is in heat and trying to fuck Picard. It probably won't surprise you to know that I wasn't exactly eager to watch this one.
Tumblr media
Lwaxana Troi is once again played by Majel Barrett, who proceeds to try and steal every scene she's in. With her ramped-up sex drive, she views men as a commodity (her words, not mine) and spends a good chunk of the episode chasing after Picard. At one point she invites him to dinner, but instead of being the standard diplomatic function for the senior crew he was expecting, it turns out to be a romantic dinner for both of them. This leads to a pretty funny scene where Picard calls Data out of desperation and invites him to join them, tricking him into taking over the conversation with long-winded anecdotes.
Here we get the explanation of The Phase, during which it's confirmed that Riker and Troi are seeing each other, probably because their romance was given so little focus to begin with they just had to clarify. I'd also like to note that Riker seems suddenly interested when he hears that one day his Betazoid girlfriend is going to have a massively increased sex drive.
Picard retreats to his Dixon Hill holodeck program to avoid Lwaxana, and the episode spends a strangely long time focused on it, including Picard reconfiguring the program multiple times and then going to a bar with his secretary. The production design is still excellent, but it feels like a very strange and rather pointless detour from the plot.
Tumblr media
Frustrated with Picard's absence, Lwaxana begins to consider other options, including Wesley Crusher. But thankfully she decides that he's too young before the FBI can break my door down, and deems Worf similarly unsuitable. She briefly decides to marry Riker, but then realises that he's not interested either.
Dr Pulaski notifies Riker that the Antedeans are awake, and Riker takes the excuse to go to the holodeck to notify Picard and get away from Lwaxana. Data accepts his offer to come with him, and not only takes five minutes to get into proper costume, but also has his own Dixon Hill persona named Carlos. Seeing Data get so invested in the 24th century equivalent of LARPing is adorable.
Lwaxana uses the ship's computer (which is pretty weird if you think about it) to find that Picard and Riker are on the holodeck, and somewhat pathetically falls in love with Rex, the holographic barman from the Dixon Hill program, and Picard has to tell her that her newfound love isn't a real person.
The episode ends with Lwaxana's phase ending, then offhandedly revealing to the crew that the Antedeans are actually assassins and have been carrying explosives the whole time, so they're taken into custody as Lwaxana and Mr Homn beam off. Glad to know their entire subplot was pointless.
Y'know, for an episode about an older woman going into heat and trying to have sex, this was surprisingly uneventful.
Also, the Antedeans are a pretty memorable design, even if they don't get to do much.
Tumblr media
Bizarrely enough, one of them (I have no idea which since they both look the same) was actually played by Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac fame, marking the first of multiple musician guest roles on Star Trek.
Tumblr media
3/10 - The smatterings of humour and the holodeck segments elevate it from being a 2.
I sincerely hope the next episode is either better or worse, just so I can say something different.
