Listed: Kid Millions and Sarah Bernstein
Tumblr media
Kid Millions and Sarah Bernstein both have long CVs in experimental music, Millions as the drummer for Oneida and Man Forever and Bernstein as an avant garde composer and performer with the VEER Quartet, the avant-jazz Sarah Bernstein Quartet, and solo as Exolinger. They’ve been improvising together for roughly a decade, building mesmerizing sonic architectures out of free-form drumming, wild violin pyrotechnics and cryptic spoken word. Of their latest, Live at Forest Park, Margaret Welsh writes, “Bernstein and Colpitts weave sound together into an unsettling fever dream-like warp, growing larger and smaller. All you can do is lay back and surrender to the waves.” Here are some things that inspire the two.
Kid Millions
Billy Harper Quintet — In Europe (Soul Note)
youtube
While I admire and enjoy all of the Quintet albums I’ve heard, this particular one captures something ineffable and transcendent. The Quintet’s personnel changes throughout Harper’s career but this particular session has the tunes, the passion, the reaching and the constant surprises that make it my most listened to album in the last ten years. Fred Hersch is especially sympathetic and powerful on this too. I really want to see this group ASAP. Billy Harper is still playing!
Pete La Roca — Basra (Blue Note)
youtube
La Roca is a drummer who is unappreciated but his playing and compositions stand out. This album gets the slight nod over the legendary Turkish Women at the Bath because it was recorded well. He’s in the same league as Elvin and also wrote some incredible tunes.
George Adams & Don Pullen Quartet — City Gates (Timeless) (but any record is cool)
youtube
I’m leaning on big tenor sounds these days, and George Adams stands in the same universe as Billy Harper because he plays the range of the instrument — there are gorgeous melodies set alongside blistering free blasts. Don Pullen is incredible as well. Near the end of his life he started to write more songs with hooks, but he shreds like Cecil Taylor. I’m digging the stuff that straddles the line between songs and free these days.
Henry Threadgill with Brent Hayes Edwards — Easily Slip Into Another World (memoir)
Tumblr media
This is a brand-new book, and I’m finding lots of inspiration and great advice within the pages. His discussion about how young musicians need to find their way within the tradition, among their peers, and on their own terms applies to all traditions, rock included. In order to really engage with the music, you have to play all the time, with other people. You have to play covers, and you have to play in front of audiences. And you need to be fired. I certainly have!
Marcus Gilmore
youtube
Such an incredible, deep, drummer. You should go see him ASAP!
Sarah Bernstein
Music/poetry films I like:
When It Rains — Charles Burnett (1995)
youtube
Charles Burnett’s work speaks to me as a whole. The films I’ve seen slip into a continuous flow of poetic story/documentary. When It Rains is a 13-minute short film that takes place on a festive New Years Day, but January’s rent needs to be paid. Musicians are among the characters and sound, and it plays like a jazz improvisation. A particular highlight is seeing instrument-maker Juno Lewis on-screen playing his double bell trumpet. The story’s ending will have vinyl collectors smiling.
The Connection — Shirley Clarke (1961)
youtube
Before discovering this movie, I knew director Shirley Clarke from her later film "Ornette: Made in America," also a must-see. The Connection is a film version of Jack Gelber’s play for the burgeoning Living Theatre. Most of the actors from the stage play, and all the musicians, are also in the film. The band is swinging: Freddie Redd composer/pianist, Jackie McLean alto sax, Michael Mattos bass, Larry Ritchie drums. The musicians also act in the story, and even the turntable — playing Charlie Parker’s Marmaduke — provides a key recurring motif in the film.
Poetry In Motion — Ron Mann (1982)
vimeo
Poetry in Motion, By Ron Mann from bob stein on Vimeo.
The other movies on this list are ones I’ve seen relatively recently, but Poetry In Motion I watched in an art-house cinema as a teenager, and it had a big impact on me. The documentary shows 40 poets and performers, including Jayne Cortez, Dianne Di Prima, Helen Adam, William S. Burroughs, Amiri Baraka, Allen Ginsburg, Jim Carroll, John Cage, Robert Creeley, Miguel Algarin, to name a few! Also check out Ron Mann’s first feature film: Imagine The Sound (1981), a superb profile of Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Bill Dixon and Paul Bley.
Desolation Center — Stuart Swezey (2018)
youtube
The concert footage is so good. Highlights are Einsturzende Neubauten and Survival Research Labs literally blowing up the desert in Joshua Tree. Also Sonic Youth, Minute Men, Swans, all in DIY festivals and shows taking place in outdoor remote locations in 1980’s SoCal.
Amazing Grace — Alan Elliott/Sydney Pollack (2018)
youtube
Aretha Franklin and choir hold a live concert recording session of her gospel album Amazing Grace over two days in 1972. This is not a documentary with talking heads or explanation, rather the action is all in the music and spirit. Aretha Franklin’s genius and deep interaction with the listeners and choir is riveting and inspiring, even more so with repeat viewing.

I kinda hope that Rory ends up having a son. Mostly to break the weird “parent or friend” cycle she’s the product of. But also cause it’d be hilarious if the kid was called Lucas Christopher Richard Gilmore. Ritchie or Ricky for short. It just tickles me. You know?
Aww, that’s so cute, I like that. Naming him after all the men in her family. 💖 Plus, I could see Lorelai (affectionately) making fun of Rory for either nickname, lol.
I think part of Lorelai and Rory’s ‘best friend’ dynamic comes from having a smaller age gap than your typical parent and child. Just speaking from personal experience - I was 16 when my sister gave birth to my nephew. He ended up mostly in my care from the ages of 2 through 7, and I can tell you - our age difference really blurred the lines between us having a “guardian/child” vs. “sibling” dynamic. Rory might not have that issue, since she was about 30 when she got pregnant.
Another thing is: I think Lorelai and Rory developed their own sort of island with each other. Lorelai had cut off all ties to her parents and the whole wealthy world she grew up in, started new roots in a town full of (friendly) strangers, and Rory mainly grew up surrounded by adults, with Lane being her only friend that was her age. None of Lorelai’s friends had kids around (until Sookie got pregnant later), so even though Rory had a lot of general support - as far as stronger social ties go, it was probably 60% her mom and 40% Lane. I think something that would help break that cycle between Rory and her kid, would be if the characters were given the big, happy family they deserved. Imagine if Luke and Lorelai got married shortly after the original series ended, and had two kids. Then we’d have a 7 and 8-year old running around the house (one of which I like to think Paul Anka grew attached to, and selected as his emotional support child 😂), along with April, who would drop in for a visit sometimes from college. Also, we have Liz, TJ, and Doula in Stars Hollow, which gives Rory a step-aunt, uncle, and 9-year-old cousin living nearby (along with Jess popping in from time to time). Plus, on top of that we have Lorelai’s best friend Sookie with her kids, and Rory’s best friend Lane with her twin boys. The town is just overflowing with kids lol. So if Rory moved back to Stars Hollow (or at least close by), her child would have plenty of other options for companionship that he or she could gravitate toward.
It kinda bums me out how much the show crowds kids out, tbh. I can’t help but think of how much fuller AYITL could have felt. I mean, all those kids wouldn’t necessarily have to hog the spotlight, but they could have at least filled in some of the empty space in the background (the revival just felt so lonely to me, and it really didn’t have to). I think they would have contributed to a much more satisfying vibe, because having such a large crowd of family and friends around would have (potentially) helped Rory not feel so aimless and lost. Seeing life go on around her could have reassured her that nothing really stays still, and that things have a way of working out. And to have a show that starts out with strained relationships due to a family rift, end up with warm households full of love and wholesome chaos?

If you previously thought Defund the Police was too radical, but now you’re thinking that it could be a good idea after all, then that’s fucking great. Good for you for having an open mind and a working conscience (that might sound sarcastic, but I mean it, truly!). Maybe spend some time today looking into the work of Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Mariame Kaba (especially No More Police, written with Andrea Ritchie), Josie Duffy Rice. Consider donating to your local bail fund, or to a city that’s going to need to bail out protesters. Or join a protest near you. There are lots of ways for you to get involved!

Alternate universe where the Spider-Slayers are the Slingers, who were kidnapped off the street and given powers before they could form on their own.
Ghost-Spider is Cassie St Commons, “Dusk” to her friends. A trans femme goth girl, her powers as G-S match up with her mainstream counterpart with the addition of wall crawling. Shes calm and collected, more of a loner bit always there for her friends when she needs to be. She’s not dead, she’s not alive. She’s something else
Goliath Spider is Ritchie Gilmore. A former wrestling student with a lot to prove and the strength to do it. He’s not only super headstrong, with the muscle to accompany it, he can now turn his skin into organic steel. He claims to be the leader, but he’s more brash and arrogant with a lot to learn
Bone-Spider is Johnny Gallo. Already a super powered mutant with almost perfect spider-like powers, Johnny had bio organic spikes and spurs implanted in his body. He is a flirt, but nervous behind his mask, afraid his new form will scare others
And the fourth... oh Eddie... Eddie McDoughnah had been a gifted intellect, a skilled mechanic. He had wanted to build a mechanical wing suit to help those around him. Unfortunately not only did his heart stop during the procedure, the biochemistry injected into him caused his cells to turn to dust. He was designed to be the Kaine to his enemies Abel.
They had been taken in to this government facility. They were modified, extremely, trained heavily. They were to be government weapons, spies, assassins. But when they witnessed Eddie perish, they fled. Into a world filled with supers. They were on their own, runaways, vagabonds, nomads.

I made these shitty Slingers mood boards... (left to right: Eddie McDonough / Hornet, Johnny Gallo / Ricochet, Cassie St. Commons / Dusk, Ritchie Gilmore / Prodigy) I’m all out of content lol
Also I think it’s worth saying that I personally don’t say The F Word but those pictures fit the aesthetic or whatever so I used them
No photos used are mine; credits go to respective owners. Made using PicCollage and it’s search tool.

Avengers Recover: A Proposal
(Yes, I know it’s a terrible title, but it was the best I could think of...)
Inspired by my annoyance at the way recent Marvel series (namely The Vision and Avengers Undercover) have dealt with issues of addiction and recovery, I began brainstorming my own, probably-never-to-be-published series centered around a treatment center for those like poor Victor Mancha who fall through the cracks and need help.
The facility is tentatively called the Rock Gardens (I’m not particularly married to the name, but it’s the only one that’s stuck so far), and in my head it’s based in the Hill County area of Texas, partly because I lived out there for a while, but also because it’s a spread-out area that’s less likely to attract supervillain attacks, alien invasions and similar nonsense. The layout is inspired by the facility where I lived - there’s a bunch of sex-segregated dorms, an office building/communal space, and a recreation center.
The program is basic rehab - every day starts and ends with meetings, and most days consist of a mix of group therapy sessions, seminars, and activities, with meals in between. Enrollment lasts between six weeks and several months, with residents being required to be inactive as superheroes for the duration of their stay.
Proposed Staff:
Drew is a local hero, a member of Texas’ state-sponsored superhero team, the Rangers. Once a severe alcoholic, he was forced to clean up his act after causing a lot of public damage while drunk, but he really got serious about his recovery after a near-death experience during the HYDRA Terrorcarrier attack on Crawford, which sidelined him for several months. Now several years sober, he serves as the campus director for the Rock Gardens.
Henry is a former actor who trashed his career when he got a little too enthusiastic about playing Tony Stark. After cleaning up his act, he became the Marvel Universe’s leading teetotaler, and served for a time in California’s state-sponsored superhero team, the Order. After tragedy struck his team, he rededicated himself to promoting sobriety, and set up a number of recovery centers, including the Rock Gardens, where he serves as the executive director. He has been distracted lately, busy overseeing the refurbishment of his flagship center, Mulholland Field in California.
Terrance is one of the country’s foremost experts on trauma, which is probably not surprising, given that he is cursed with the ability to weed out people’s deepest fears and manifest them. For a time, he served the Initiative, trying to use his abilities to help people, but when the Initiative was taken over by supervillains who forced him to rubber-stamp their abuses, he grew disillusioned and quit. He now works as one of the Rock Gardens’ resident therapists, specializing in identifying triggers.
Woodstock was once Los Angeles’ top late-night TV host who dabbled with superheroism, but a near-death experience coupled with an assassination scandal brought her career to an abrupt end. When her friends in X-Statix all died, she decided to get the hell out of LA and now serves as an administrator for the Gardens, making sure that every
Rachel is a former music teacher and a mutant with the ability to manipulate others with her violin. Between her blue skin, her powers, and a criminal past, she’s had difficulty fitting in, but she worked to clean up her life and now works as an music therapy instructor and security personnel - her music can calm people quickly when tempers flare.
Proposed Residents:
Ritchie is a former wrestler and superhero. A bad mix of a toxic mentor figure and a disastrous early superhero career drove him to alcoholism, culminating in him becoming famous for being the first superhero to be arrested under the SHRA. Getting your ass handed to you by Tony Stark in front of God only knows how many witnesses is a pretty damned hard bottom to hit. He worked for years to get his act together, and even managed to step into a leadership during the Serpent crisis a few years ago, but after his mentor appeared to return from the dead, he fell back into the kind of thinking that pushed him into alcoholism in the first place, so now he’s at the Gardens. Ritchie’s that guy you encounter in 12-step meetings who knows all the literature, all the vocabulary, and all the rules, but he still doesn’t have the humility or the willingness to change that underpins a successful recovery.
Sharon used to be Ms. Marvel, and then she was She-Thing. Now she keeps switching back and forth between the two identities, which has made a mess of her life, and thus she’s come to the Gardens in hopes of learning to integrate her two halves. Sharon is an example of an all-too-common story in addiction, the addict who keeps turning to compulsive behaviors (in her case, switching between superheroism and supervillainy) to stabilize a mental health issue.
Jeanne was a promising student at Avengers Academy with the ability to retain large amounts of information and copy any movement she sees, but her profound mental abilities have a downside - she is apparently fated to start losing her memories by the time she’s thirty. In a bid to make the most of the time she apparently has left, she threw herself into work after leaving the Academy, but this eventually caught up to her and she suffered profound exhaustion and started having trouble thinking, which gave her a considerable health scare. She thus checked herself into the Gardens as a workaholic, seeking to learn a healthier balance between working and rest.
Klara used to be a Runaway before her friends abandoned her. Like a lot of abuse survivors, she has built up self-defense mechanisms. Unlike most abuse survivors, her self-defense mechanisms involve subconsciously summoning violent plant life, and after a string of “sudden atrium incidents” in foster homes, she has been sent to the Rock Gardens, the nearest facility with Soames retrofitting to keep her powers from acting up at night. Klara is what some people in recovery circles like to call an adult child - due to a persistent lack of a stable environment, her emotional and psychological development has not occurred along regular lines, and so in some ways she’s very mature for an 13-year-old, but in other places, she’s slightly behind.
Katie is the daughter of U-Go Girl, a famous mutant superheroine, except that she only found this out recently, having grown up believing that U-Go Girl was her big sister. After inheriting her mom’s old journals, she learned the truth, and realized that her mother palmed her off on her grandparents in order to become a superhero. She didn’t take it well. She is a mutant, too, with the ability to teleport objects onto her body, and she used this to become a shoplifter. Unfortunately for her, she also inherited her mother’s notoriously low stamina, and after passing out in the middle of a spree, she got arrested. Thankfully, her family’s lawyer kept her out of juvie, but in exchange, she had to agree to a stint at the Gardens. She is ostensibly there to learn not to be a budding kleptomaniac, but what she really needs to learn is to let go of her anger.
Michael is the son of Wallow, one of Ghost Rider’s old enemies. When he was a little kid, his dad murdered his mom and tried to kill him and his sister, but was shot dead by the police. Fifteen years later, his dad’s ghost possessed him and tried to push him towards suicide. He survived, but you can imagine the kind of issues that being possessed by your dead father might incur. On top of the usual psychological issues, Michael has gained the ability to stir up fear, anxiety and depression in others. Michael symbolizes the concept of the family disease, the tendency for addictions or mental illnesses to pass down from one generation to the next.
Obviously, this is a work in progress, and I may need to adjust the lineup (I’m already a bit wobbly on Ritchie, because he appeared in comics recently, and Michael, because there’s not a lot of information about him on the Internet...)
