the thing about buddy dawn is that i know about a million people i went to high school with who were just like him. people who were academic overachiever who thought everyone with lower grade than theirs were idiots (i’m applying that to all of the rat grinders for their grinding), religious fanatics who were taught young that everyone who didn’t worship their god their way was inferior to them, who were passive aggressive to everyone they thought was in their way to success or questioned their actions, who would do anything to get to the top.

i know multiple people just like him, i couldn’t list them on two hands if i tried. and while every time i remember their existence i thank the universe that high school doesn’t last forever and i never have to see them again, that doesn’t mean i think they all deserve to die. if someone told me right now that any those girls i was in clubs with who made me want to bang my head up against the wall every time i talked to them were murdered by someone they thought was their friend i would be furious on their behalf. they were just kids when they made the mistakes that made me not like them. and i don’t have to forgive them to understand that they were just kids doing what they were told, we all were.

buddy dawn might have been a passive aggressive twerp that wanted to reconvert kristen to helio and convert the rest of his party along the way, but he was also just a kid doing what his televangelist grandfather told him to do. he was just a kid doing what he was told. kristen tried to convert the bad kids when first they met too. that didn’t make her worthy of death any more that it does buddy now.
