MLK at 95.
January 15, 2024
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born 95 years ago on January 15, 1929. As a Baptist minister, he advocated non-violence while promoting civil rights. He spoke for the poor, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised. While he was imprisoned in a Birmingham jail for protesting segregation, he responded to eight white ministers who had criticized him for participating in protests that they described as “unwise and untimely.”
Dr. King’s famous reply to the white ministers explained why he traveled to Birmingham from Atlanta to protest:
I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider.
While Dr. King was keenly aware of the racism that served as the understructure of the Christian church in the old South, he would be shocked by the virulent, mean-spirited, anti-Christian message that animates many (not all) evangelical congregations in America today. They form the backbone of Donald Trump's support in Iowa and beyond. They have adopted Trump's message that treats the poor, oppressed, and disenfranchised as “outsiders” and “others” who do not belong in America.
Over the last several days, we have learned that members of the Texas National Guard physically blocked federal Border Patrol agents from responding to reports of immigrants in distress in the Rio Grande. The bodies of a mother and two children were later recovered from the river in the area where immigrants were reported to be in distress.
Texas, of course, denies that its cruel actions caused the drownings—a denial that should be viewed skeptically from a state whose governor—Greg Abbott—recently commented Texas troopers could not shoot immigrants crossing the border because the troopers would be charged with murder by the Biden administration. Texas governor criticized after comment about shooting migrants | The Texas Tribune.
Similar animus underlies the recent comments of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, who withdrew Mississippi from a federal program to provide food to school children during summer breaks. Governor Reeves said Mississippi withdrew from the program to fight “attempts to expand the welfare state.”
Blocking efforts to rescue a drowning mother and her children? Regretting the inability to shoot immigrants because it would be murder? Denying food to poor children out of spite? Who are these people? How do they look at themselves in the mirror?
Ninety-five years after Dr. King’s birth and fifty-five years after his death, it is difficult to believe that people who identify as upstanding members of the Christian church can support such actions.
Another section from Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail is relevant to this moment in our nation’s history:
But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If the church of today does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authentic ring, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. I meet young people every day whose disappointment with the church has risen to outright disgust.
Dr. King’s words were prophetic. See Pew Research (10/17/19) In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace.
And, of course, as Dr. King recognized, “there are some notable exceptions” among church leaders who supported his work—just as there are exceptions today. Several readers have recommended Faithful America as an antidote to Christian nationalism. The organization’s helpful FAQ page explains why “Christian nationalism” is not Christian. See Resisting Christian Nationalism: FAQ + Resources | Faithful America.
On this day commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth, we can see how far we have come—and how much further we must go. He didn’t despair. Neither should we.

A reflection on the terrorist attack on Israel through the lens of America. October 9, 2023
READ MORE https://roberthubbell.substack.com/p/a-reflection-on-the-terrorist-attack
"For a small country, approximately 700 deaths are the equivalent of 25,000 in the US."
"Sadly, the point of the terror attack on Israel was to disrupt efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia (among others) as a precursor to a peace framework. Hamas’s goal is to prevent peace and stability in the Mideast—a development that would make its structural opposition to Israel’s legitimacy irrelevant and unnecessary."

"Hi, all. In both the comments section and in my email inbox, I am receiving a lot of criticism for not condemning Israel's policies toward Gaza and the West Bank. As I responded to one reader,
If your criticism is that I should have given the entire history of the Israeli Palestinian conflict in my newsletter last night, that is both an unrealistic expectation and dangerous ground. The attack was on civilians-- on young people from around the world attending a music festival, kids killed in front of their parents, and people asleep in their beds. If you couple those killings with the statement, “But Israel has horrible policies toward Gaza and the West Bank,” can you not see that marshaling those arguments in that order has a logical force that implies the killing of innocent civilians was justified?
Many readers (wrongly) claim that I defended Israel's treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank or that I justified Israel's retaliation on Gaza after the terrorist attack by Hamas. Neither of those statements appear in my newsletter. If you want to disagree with what I wrote, that's fine. But please try to connect your disagreement to something I wrote rather than something you read in the NYTimes or on Twitter by some other writer. If you do that, we can have a discussion. If you don't, you are having an argument with someone other than me. Thanks!"
+ "...the loss of life in Israel (pop 9.2 million) is like America losing more than 20,000 citizens (percentage-wise)."

More Words Of Wisdom
Of the several newsletters I subscribe to, one of my favourites is by Robert B. Hubbell.  I don’t know much about Mr. Hubbell apart from the fact that he is an attorney in California, but he often speaks words of wisdom.  I’m sharing the first part of his newsletter from this morning about President Biden’s speech last night.  If you enjoy his style, feel free to subscribe to his newsletter –…

There is no other way to say it: The media is discriminating against Fetterman because of a physical disability and is unwilling to focus on substance. They see Fetterman as a stroke victim, not as a person whose intellect, values, and ideas outshine Oz at every level. Shame on them. I hope you will join me in letting your favorite media outlet know how you feel about reducing Fetterman to his disability rather than recognizing that he—like tens of millions of Americans—is not defined by his disability.
John Fetterman outshines Dr. Oz. - by Robert B. Hubbell
Every person with any disability who reads and watches this kind of discrimination against Fetterman knows that many people feel the same way about them. And yet our Senate is a gerontocracy with a lot of people in worse physical shape because of age than Fetterman. It makes no sense but that’s the way it is.

Elect Democrats. Reform the Court. Defend the Constitution. Preserve Democracy.
March 5, 2024
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
MAR 5 READ IN APP LISTEN TO POST · 18:32
The most important lesson from Monday’s disqualification ruling is that the Supreme Court is broken beyond repair. The reactionary majority made that fact abundantly clear by unilaterally amending the Constitution to remove the Insurrection Clause from the 14th Amendment.
Those sworn to protect the Constitution are dismantling it. The protectors of the Constitution have become its adversary in order to protect a failed insurrectionist who has promised a second effort to overthrow the Constitution. (“I said I want to be a dictator for one day.”)

Vince Foster and Hillary Clinton
claim: Hillary had an affair with Vince Foster
analysis: false. In the context that this rumor is often used, it loses credibility. It gained it’s origins as gossip in Arkansas and was used by political opponents to later try and pin his suicide on the Clintons. I will go through why the rumor persists and show how it loses credibility in the way people use this rumor against the Clintons.
Background: the rumor that Hillary had an affair with Vince started in Arkansas where sexuality of public officials is often gossip.
Here’s a quote showing an example of how people would intrude and speculate about public figures life: “Sit in the Capitol Bar, in downtown Little Rock, for a few nights and you can be told that virtually every prominent public figure in the state is a rapacious womanizer and also gay- Including Clinton. Even Hillary Clinton was not spared this treatment: one can hear that she was having an affair with Vince Foster and also that she is a lesbian, often from the same lascivious gossip.”
Web Hubbell, another close friend of Hillary’s spoke on this matter and gave his view: Webster Hubbell explained in his memoir Friends in high places that this kind of sniping came with the territory Hillary had staked for herself in Arkansas. Because Hillary was the first female partner in the upper-crust Rose Law Firm, her close professional and personal relationships with Foster and Hubbell provoked resented in the tightly knit community surrounding the Little Rock Country Club. The governor’s wife was an inevitable focus of gossip and everything she did provoked idle chatter. If Hubbell was and Foster were sometimes said to be lovers, at other moments her friendships with other professional women provoked speculation that Hillary was actually a lesbian.
false accusations and rumors that have been made about Hillary and Vince Foster:
“In new expose Bill & Hillary: so this is that thing called love, authors Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince claim that Foster was “impressed” with the budding attorney and  brought her to work at Little Rock’s Rose Law firm in 1977 as the first female associate.” This should hardly raise eyebrows, Hillary was an impressive lawyer and very smart but the way these authors talk about it make it seem as if it was more than that and Vince was only attracted to Hillary in a romantic or sexual way. This claim is false because it can easily be pinned down to sexism and the inability of two male authors to see that a woman can be recognized for her work ethic by a man in a platonic way where neither of the two are interested in each other.
“The authors go on to claim that other colleagues began to notice a brewing romance between Hillary and Vince and that sometimes he would skip family dinners to eat dinner with Hillary.” Again, this goes back to sexism and the fact that these authors and others can’t understand a platonic relationship between a man and a woman. Also what other colleagues? Web Hubbell himself already spoke on the matter, debunking it. And skipping family dinners to eat dinner with Hillary is hardly a crime, ever heard of working overtime?
Tumblr media
This one is just laughable. He accompanied her because he worked at the law firm with her! Also never believe an unmerited and unidentified source such as “a room service staffer” or something vague like that. No name for a room service staffer was given so this could have easily been made up. If they were having an affair they would be discreet and not flaunt it in front of room service staff.
The authors also claimed that Vince’s wife, Lisa was jealous and hated Hillary.
Tumblr media
Yeah so jealous lol.
Tumblr media
Yeah this can be pinned down to troopergate and several troopers were paid to lie and worked with Larry Nichols. I will elaborate more on this in my troopergate post then link it back here but a lot of the troopers are not credible sources.
Just a preview: the dubious local duo of disgruntled former Clinton employee Larry Nichols and local detective Larry Case, whose specialty was outing the sex scandals of public figures, brought the likes of Gennifer Flowers to the tabloids while Cliff Jackson, a former Oxford classmate of Clinton's, created Troopergate.
Why does this claim persist?:
1. Fox news
Fox news has interviewed Jeff Rovin a man who claims he was a ‘fixer for the Clintons.’
his claim: man claiming to be Bill and Hillary Clinton’s “fixer” – hired to cover up their “dirtiest schemes,” including steamy sex romps and a major scandal involving former deputy White House counsel Vince Foster – says the Clintons have an open marriage, patronize hookers, buy off news reporters and coordinated a scheme to destroy White House intern Monica Lewinsky after her affair with the president.
Why he can’t be trusted: he’s biased. He is a trump supporter:
However, Rovin claimed he is coming forward to put an end to the wild and steamy gossip.
“The election is too important to focus in this salacious material,” he told Hannity. “I hope this stuff is so unpalatable that we just stop.”
“I like Trump,” he said, adding that he’s voting for “one of those two.”
Rovin stepped out and broke this “news” in October 2016 during the election. Interesting timing as it seems that he wanted to influence voters and make them have doubts about the Clintons.
More holes in his claims:
1. He claims that on the day Presidential brother Roger Clinton was marrying his eight-months-pregnant bride Molly. there was a bachelor party. Prostitutes were involved. Recordings were made. Recordings involving Bill Clinton. This claim is false. Larry Nichols has been looking for incriminating videos and photographs of Bill with other women for ages and none have been found.
2. “ I have kept these secrets for a quarter-century because Bill Clinton had become an elder statesman with heart trouble and Hillary Clinton seemed to be focused, at last, on the business of doing her job — for better or for worse.” This ruins his claim because why step out then during the 2016 election? Hillary was still very much focused on her job and Bill still had heart trouble oh right:
Tumblr media
The National enquirer was the first to break his story and the National enquirer is a tabloid magazine filled with exaggerations that are meant to be eye grabbing, i.e., clickbait in journalism and they are usually biased as well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.  People want to believe the Clintons are capable of murder.
This rumor persist because if Hillary were in love with Vince then the whole idea of his suicide as a murder is more plausible. People want to believe the Clintons are capable of murder in order to discredit them and they use the Vince/Hillary narrative to try to push this agenda.
why this is false:
Special counsel Robert B. Fiske Jr. concluded that Foster's death in Fort Marcy Park last July was a suicide. The Fiske investigation involved four lawyers, five physicians, seven FBI agents, approximately 125 witnesses; also DNA tests, microscopes and lasers.
According to Fiske, the truth belied all the ugly glamour. Foster's death was a personal collapse, not a White House scandal.
From the pinnacle of the Arkansas legal establishment, Foster leaped into the service of his boyhood friend, Bill Clinton, after Clinton was elected president. According to Fiske, the toll on Foster was intense from the beginning. During the transition period – when he vetted a number of top appointees – Foster complained to his Little Rock physician of depression and anxiety.
His symptoms grew worse when he got to Washington. In January 1993, Zoe E. Baird was forced to withdraw her nomination as attorney general because she had failed to pay taxes for a nanny; fresh from his inauguration, President Clinton was hit with charges of elitism and corner-cutting and incompetent screening. Foster blamed himself – the Fiske report shows him constantly shouldering blame for mistakes made in the chaotic White House – and the night of the Baird debacle Foster was literally sick from a panic attack.
Final thoughts: the idea that Hillary would have an affair with Vince Foster or any of her colleagues is simply rooted in old fashioned Arkansan sexism. It is born out of the idea that a woman can’t be close to a man without being sexually involved with him. It is also rooted in the old Arkansan belief that a woman can’t move forward in her career unless she is aided or favored by a man.
It would be entirely out of character for Hillary to cheat.
These are just now my own evaluations based on opinion/fact
Her methodist faith and from what we know about her drawing into her faith during times of trouble in her marriage give insight into the fact that she would agree that adultery is a sin. Whereas Bill is a completely different story and due to his upbringing, infidelity was predictable, Hillary herself seems to have no inner conflict that would cause her to cheat.
Why?
1. Hillary draws love from within herself. Hillary is entirely confident and does not need validation. Usually people that cheat are seeking to fill an emptiness they feel within themselves. Hillary has always been filled with a purpose.
2. “I was raised to believe that actions spoke louder than words,” she explained  “If you were a person of faith, that should be evident in how you treated other people and what kind of life you lived.
To me this shows that Hillary would not cheat. Actions spoke louder than words and it is clear that Hillary is a woman of her word. Married to Bill by a methodist preacher, I think this would only enforce her and make her want to keep her vows, since actions meant more than words and the vows to her would have simply not been words.
3. Chelsea.
It is clear that Hillary’s priority has always been being a good mother to Chelsea. To me this is another reason why it would be out of character for her to cheat. it seems that she would much rather have a stable relationship than risk infidelity and tear their family apart, therefore hurting Chelsea and putting her in the middle of an affair like that would be out of the question for Hillary. Chelsea is one of the reasons Hillary worked so hard to save her relationship with Bill and I don’t think she would have been unfaithful to her husband out of respect for her daughter’s well being and her own beliefs.

Promises Kept.
January 5, 2024
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
When Joe Biden declared his candidacy for president in 2019, the nation was bruised, battered, and divided by three years of Trump's unrelenting chaos and carnage. During Biden’s year-long campaign, Trump plunged America into darker waters as he tried to extort Ukraine into fabricating lies about Joe Biden and his son. Trump then engaged in gross dereliction of duty by mishandling the nation’s response to Covid, ultimately resorting to lies and quackery as the death toll mounted.
Biden stepped into the breach, promising “to restore the soul, honor, dignity, and decency” of America. In word and deed, Biden has kept those promises—despite virulent and violent opposition by MAGA extremists who sought to prevent the peaceful transfer of power—and who still seek to destroy our democracy today.
Historians may view Biden’s greatest success as the restoration of normalcy, decency, and rationality to the executive branch of the US government. Biden’s legislative accomplishments are historic and will be an enduring legacy standing alone.
Identifying Biden’s legislative successes is easy; identifying the depth and breadth of Biden’s restoration of decency and rationality is more difficult—because living in a normal frame of reference is subtle and ineffable. It infuses every aspect of democracy and political discourse. It is the absence of chaos, it is not waking up every morning thinking, “Oh, God. What has he tweeted now?”, and it is not hearing every governmental action re-interpreted through Trump's lenses of narcissism, delusion, and insecurity.
Joe Biden acts within a rational political framework. His policies can be praised or criticized because they exist (in writing) and reflect the reasoned judgment of Biden and his staff after a period of reflection and debate. They are not made up “on the fly” in response to reporters’ questions shouted over the noise of helicopter rotors.
The return to normalcy, decency, and dignity is neither sexy, compelling, nor “made for TV.” But it was precisely what the nation needed after the chaos of Trump's tenure as president. Joe Biden kept his promises. For that, we owe him a debt of gratitude that we must repay in 2024.
On the eve of the third anniversary of January 6, Biden is launching his 2024 campaign in earnest. In a political ad previewed on MSNBC, Biden said that he is making “the preservation of democracy” the centerpiece of his campaign. In the ad, Biden says, in part,
All of us are being asked, “What will we do to maintain our democracy?” History is watching. The world is watching. Most importantly, our children and grandchildren will hold us responsible . . . .
A campaign theme of “preserving democracy” is neither sexy, compelling, nor “made for TV.” But it is precisely what the nation needs as it stares into the abyss of a second Trump term as president.
I have heard from dozens of readers this week who are disappointed with Biden’s responses regarding immigration and the war in Gaza. Some have suggested that they will not vote or will vote for a third-party candidate. Both of those options are the functional equivalent of voting for Trump.
The freedom to criticize the president is a privilege of our democracy guaranteed in the Constitution. We can debate presidential policies only if we have a democratic frame of reference within which to hold those debates.
That democratic frame of reference will exist under a second Biden term. Under Trump, the democratic frame of reference will be replaced by a simple test: Does speech praise Trump? If not, the speaker will act at their peril. Trump’s vigilantes will threaten the speaker, and state and federal agencies will pretend the threats are harmless jokes or over-exuberant expressions of loyalty to Trump.
The threat of vigilantism to punish speech is not hyperbole. As we approach the third anniversary of January 6, elected officials who criticize Trump or apply the law to his unlawful conduct are being deluged with death threats. They are being “swatted” by sick individuals who call 9-1-1 to make false reports of crimes in progress—resulting in the deployment of armed emergency responders to the elected officials’ homes.
Like Joe Biden, Trump has made promises. He has promised his followers that, if re-elected, “I will be your retribution.” He has also promised that he will be a dictator “on day one” if he is elected to a second term.
Joe Biden has kept his promise “to restore the soul, honor, dignity, and decency” of America. We should take Biden at his word that he will work to preserve democracy if re-elected in 2024.
As with Biden, we should take Trump at his word: He will exact retribution and act as a dictator on day one of his second term.
The competing promises of Trump and Biden tell us everything we need to know about the choice we face in the 2024 election.
Concluding Thoughts.
The choice between presidential candidates in 2024 could not be starker. There is no ambiguity, nuance, or grey area. We must help Joe Biden communicate that fundamental difference and help people understand that the choice in 2024 is not about policies or the economy. It is about democracy—and whether we are for it or against it.

What happens now? Judge Dearie will continue his review of the non-classified documents. We should expect that process will turn out badly for Trump. And then . . . sometime in 2023, we should expect an indictment of Trump for espionage.
“A reader asked in the Comments section yesterday whether the crime of espionage requires an intent to share the defense secrets with another party. It does not. Under Subsection (d) of the 18 USC § 793 (Espionage Act), if a person lawfully obtains possession of information harmful to the security interests of the United States (if disclosed), the person is guilty of espionage if he “willfully retains the same and fails to deliver it on demand to the officer or employee of the United States entitled to receive it."
Thus, under the Espionage Act, there is no requirement of an intent to share the information with anyone. Continued possession of defense secrets after a demand for their return is espionage. That is why the DOJ will indict Trump.”

– 2018.), prof. John Howard Hubbell (1925. – 2007.) iz američkog National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) i dr.
No, Hubbell je imao drukčije mišljenje.
Ivo Šlaus i dr.

Kary B. Mullis, 74, Dies; Found a Way to Analyze DNA and Won Nobel
Kary B. Mullis, a biochemist who won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering a way to analyze DNA easily and cheaply and thus pave the way for major advances in medical diagnostics, molecular biology and forensic science, died on Aug. 7 at his home in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 74.
The cause was heart and respiratory failure brought on by pneumonia, his wife, Nancy Cosgrove Mullis, said.
The process for analyzing DNA that Dr. Mullis invented is called polymerase chain reaction, or PCR. It replicates a single strand of DNA millions of times, enabling scientists to pinpoint a segment of the strand and amplify it for identification. Polymerase, an enzyme that synthesizes polymers and nucleic acids, is essential in creating DNA and RNA, the molecules that are responsible for coding DNA.
Before PCR, amplifying DNA took weeks, because it had to be generated in bacteria. Once Dr. Mullis’s process was perfected, it took only hours, opening up a world of possibilities.
Today, his method is used to detect genetic mutations that can lead to diagnoses of diseases, like sickle cell anemia; analyze ancient sources of DNA, like bones; assist in obtaining crime scene evidence; and determine paternity.
It was used as well to decode and map the entire human DNA as part of the Human Genome Project, the landmark international research effort that ran from 1990 to 2003.
As he told the story in his Nobel lecture, Dr. Mullis found his inspiration one night in 1983 while driving to his cabin in Mendocino, Calif.
At the time, Dr. Mullis was a lab director for Cetus Corporation, one of the first biotechnology companies, which had been founded in Berkeley, Calif. His lab made short strands of DNA molecules called oligonucleotides, and had become so efficient at it that it was making more than the company could use. Worried that some of his lab workers might be laid off because of their overproductivity, Dr. Mullis was searching for a way to use more of the molecules.
As he drove, he considered the challenges scientists faced in decoding and identifying problems in human DNA. There are billions of DNA base pairs, he knew, but they had proved exceedingly difficult to analyze because there was no easy way to focus on small groups of them.
Dr. Mullis knew that the oligonucleotides bond easily with DNA. The problem was how to isolate the DNA that scientists might want to analyze. Dr. Mullis, pondering ways to control the oligonucleotides, suddenly realized that they didn’t have to be controlled at all. The bonding would have a useful side effect: It would double the amount of DNA that scientists were interested in. The process could then be repeated over and over, expanding the DNA sample exponentially. It would be like pumping up a microbe to the size of a dinosaur.
Indeed, the science of PCR, because it allows for the unlimited replication of small bits of DNA, was one of the inspirations of “Jurassic Park,” the Michael Crichton novel about a theme park of cloned dinosaurs that Steven Spielberg turned into a movie franchise.
Though Dr. Mullis came up with the concept of PCR, proving that it worked was another matter; months after his breakthrough, he had still not done so. He had not written a paper to validate his idea.
“Mullis as an experimentalist is sort of hit and miss,” Thomas J. White, who got Dr. Mullis his job at Cetus, told The New York Times in 1998.
As a result, two other Cetus scientists, Randall K. Saiki and Henry A. Erlich, were put on the project, and the three published a paper about the process in 1985. No one, however, disputed that it was Dr. Mullis who had first figured it out.
For his discovery, Cetus awarded Dr. Mullis $10,000, but the company later sold the rights to his PCR process to the pharmaceutical giant F. Hoffmann-La Roche for $300 million. Dr. Mullis, believing he had been denied a just reward, remained bitter about it for the rest of his life.
He shared his Nobel Prize with Michael Smith, a British-born scientist, who was also cited for advances in DNA research.
In 1995, defense lawyers in the murder trial of O.J. Simpson enlisted Dr. Mullis as an expert witness because his PCR method had been used to analyze blood samples in the case. But he was ultimately not called to testify; prosecutors had made it clear that if he did take the stand they would try to undermine his credibility by bringing up his acknowledged history of drinking and drug use.
Kary Banks Mullis was born on Dec. 28, 1944, in Lenoir, N.C. He was the second of four sons of Cecil and Bernice Alberta (Barker) Mullis. His father was a furniture salesman. The family moved to Columbia, S.C., when Kary was 5. He got his start in science there one summer when, at 13, he designed and made his own rockets, inspired by the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik.
Dr. Mullis attended Dreher High School in Columbia and the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, graduating in 1966 with a degree in chemistry. He then headed to California, arriving in Berkeley around the time of the Summer of Love in 1967. As he spoke and wrote about it in later years, he used L.S.D. liberally. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972.
Dr. Mullis took a detour from science after that, trying his hand at writing fiction and then managing a bakery for two years. He then headed for Kansas, where his wife at the time was enrolling in medical school. He did a postdoctoral research fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, finishing in 1977. He returned to California and went to work at Cetus in 1979.
After the discovery of PCR, his career trailed off. He quit Cetus in 1986 and thereafter mostly stuck to the lecture circuit.
Dr. Mullis’s marriages to Richards Haley, Gail Hubbell and Cynthia Gibson ended in divorce. He married Nancy Cosgrove in 1997. Along with her, he is survived by a daughter, Louise Olsen; two sons, Christopher and Jeremy; two brothers, Brent and David; and two grandchildren. Another brother, Robert, died several years ago.
Dr. Mullis was naturally contrarian and none too fond of many scientists. “Scientists are doing an awful lot of damage to the world in the name of helping it,” he told The Times in 1998. “I don’t mind attacking my own fraternity because I am ashamed of it.”
One reviewer called Dr. Mullis’s 1998 book an “autobiography of the nervous system of an extraordinary chemist.”
He was skeptical of climate science and expressed doubts that H.I.V. causes AIDS, though Ms. Mullis said he had been misunderstood. “He thought it was premature to assign blame to one tiny retrovirus,” she said.
In 1998, Dr. Mulls gathered some of his controversial ideas — and unfiltered moments — into a book, “Dancing Naked in the Mind Field.” In one anecdote, on receiving the prestigious Japan Prize for his research, he recalled meeting the empress of Japan and calling her “Sweetie.”
In The New York Times Book Review, the science writer Dick Teresi called the book “darkly joyous” and an “autobiography of the nervous system of an extraordinary chemist.”
