Mates, I watched ‘The Devil All The Time’ (2020) dir. Antonio Campos starring Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgard and Robert Pattinson, and I gotta say, it’s okay??? I guess???
Believe me, I’ve seen a lot of shit before, so the dark stuff didn’t faze me at all. It’s not a factor of my review, just saying. It’s more like, it felt quite directionless? It just didn’t feel like it was going anywhere until the second half, where it started to pick up a bit, but even then, the pacing of the movie felt like it was just meandering. One of my parents told me that the movie was supposed to show the dark sides of religion and those who believe in it too much, and I guess it managed to execute that well, what with the numerous amounts of sacrifices and preaching. Not gonna lie guys, I–I kinda lost interest.
However, the actors’ performances were TOP NOTCH. Pattinson and Skarsgard did a fine job, but Holland is ESPECIALLY noteworthy. His delivery was great. Look, I really only watched this film to see whether or not Holland’s got a future outside of Spiderman and I gotta say, he delivered. I did not see Spiderman with him at all (Not sure if I saw his character, but I definitely didn’t see Spiderman). Guy’s got range. He’s gonna live.
If you’re planning on watching this film, I’m gonna have to give you a huge WARNING! It deals with incredibly dark topics, some of which are sexual assault and rape, explicit gore, pedophilia, etc. Please just look at the rating before you watch anything. This film is not for the faint of heart.
(On that note, do not feel like you have to watch the film just because. Once again, it is extremely dark, and if people are trying to get you to watch it and shaming you for not being able to handle such dark topics, they can fly right off. Everyone has their own limits, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Another thing is please don’t pride yourself on being able to handle this type of stuff or legit make fun of others for not being able to stomach it. It doesn’t make you qUiRkY or uNiQuE or tOuGh, it just makes you seem like a jerk. I’ve been seeing some of that crap around, and lemme tell ya, do not do that.)
Regardless, thanks for reading. Let me know what you thought!
SUMMARY: How does everyone deal with the aftermath of your confession?
Warnings: Swearing, lil bit of violence and angst
“I was. Once.”
As soon as the words are out of your mouth, chaos erupts.
“Bet it’s Malfoy.”
“Nah it has to be Diggory.”
You can feel eyes on you, and you leap to your feet in a panic. “I have to go,” You mutter to Fred. “I can’t stay here.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” Fred says, taking hold of your elbow and leading you out the room. Both Draco and Cedric make to follow you, before they’re stopped by Hermione.
“No,” She says firmly. “Neither of you are ambushing her. You can wait until morning like civilised human beings.”
“So… if you don’t mind me asking, who is it?” Fred says, eyeing you curiously as the two of you walk back to your common room.
You’re silent for a moment, and Fred nods in understanding. “You want to wait until you’ve told them both, I get that.”
“It wouldn’t be fair,” You say. “I shouldn’t have even said what I said tonight. That’s what I get for drinking I guess.”
“Well, I’m here if you want to talk. Or you want me to punch any Slytherins for you.”
You laugh slightly. “Thanks Fred.”
You knew you had to do it, and soon. Rumours were already flying. The next morning, you grudgingly get dressed, ready to face the day. Not knowing who you’d rather see first, you decide to wander around the castle, hopefully putting it off for as long as possible. Unfortunately, luck is not on your side, and you’re cornered in the courtyard.
“Draco,” You breath. “We need to talk.”
“Uh yeah. I think we do.” Without another word, he pulls you into an empty classroom, shutting the door behind him.
“Look, I want you to know-”
“Let me say what I need to say first,” He says firmly, and you nod solemnly. Taking a deep breath, he continues. “I did love you - I do - I mean… oh fuck, I don’t know what I mean. You were my first… everything, and I know that we had our ups and downs, but I think we were good for each other.”
“I shouldn’t have said that last night,” You say quietly, head in your hands. “It wasn’t fair.”
“No relationship is perfect,” Draco insists, drawing nearer to you. “I just- I just need to know, okay?”
Your breath hitches. This is it. You go to speak, and you find you can’t.
“I-It’s not me, is it?” For the first time since you’ve known him, Draco sounds weak. Vulnerable, even.
“I’m sorry,” You whisper, eyes filling up. Draco lets out a groan, a low and terrible noise, before swiping the contents of the desk onto the floor. Against your wishes, you flinch. “I loved you back then, but I was so young I didn’t even know what it meant. I loved you, but I wasn’t in love.”
Draco, seemingly not listening, punches the table, splintering wood everywhere. “I hate you.” His voice is bitter and hard, but his eyes are distraught. He doesn’t mean it, as much as he wants to. If he needs this to get over you, then so be it.
“I understand,” You say calmly. “I’m so sorry I ever said anything.”
“Burn in hell.”
With one last look backwards, you leave, hands trembling.
Only ten minutes later, Cedric finds you, sitting in one of the quidditch stands.
“I figured I’d find you here,” He says quietly, taking a seat next to you. “After I’d searched the common room and the library, I realised that this would be the only place you would come to if you were wanting to be alone.”
“I’m such a horrible person, I shouldn’t have said anything last night,” You say, looking out over the field.
“Nah, you were just drunk,” He shrugs. “Happens to the best of us. I understand if you don’t want to tell me, by the way.”
“N-No, I have to. I owe you that much.”
“Well, can I say something first then?” He asks, and you nod tearfully.
“I love you. I think I always have. I’d do anything for you. A-And when you said that you loved one of us, I couldn’t even think about the possibility of it not being me, it hurt too much. I wanted it to be me so badly, because you’re the most wonderful person I’ve ever met. But I thought about it all last night, and though I love you with all my heart, I understand if it isn’t me. You mean too much to me. So if it’s not me, please know that you will always have my unconditional friendship.”
You let out a small sob, and Cedric looks at you, concerned. “Did I say something wrong?” He asks.
“No, you said exactly the right thing,” You smile, tears dripping down your cheeks, as you try to regain composure. “My mother always told me that the person I loved would be the person I wanted next to me when all my dreams came true. And I’ve been asking myself that a lot recently. Who can I not imagine living without?”
Cedric stays silent, simply watching you.
“It’s you, Ced. It’s always been you,” You say, finally turning towards him.
“Really?” His smile is incredulous, and you feel all the pain from earlier in the day melting away. Grinning Cedric stands up and pulls you into his embrace, swinging you round in a circle, arms wrapped tightly round your waist. Despite everything, you laugh.
“I was such an idiot when we were dating - I’m sorry.”
“Cho was the idiot,” Cedric says, leaning down towards you, so that your foreheads are almost touching. “C-Can I kiss you?”
“I’d like that.”
A/N - Ahhhh I’m sorry this is terrible, but I had such bad writer’s block for this part. And I’m also sorry if you were rooting for Draco, but I will probably not be doing an alternate ending. I’m just a sucker for my boy Ced. Let me know what you thought!
