Elysium is a lovely sounding word which in English means "a place or state of ideal happiness," but its primary original definition comes lifted straight from Greek mythology, where Elysium was the name of the home of the blessed souls after death. This word in Ancient Greek was Hλύσιον, Ēlúsion. This same mythical location was also referred to as the Isles of the Blessed.
In older writings, it was specifically reserved for those singled out and favored by the gods. Heroes and other immortals would be rewarded with a place here to pass the rest of their eternity in bliss. As time went on, the concepts of punishment and reward in the afterlife became more widespread, which eventually merged Elysium more deeply into the concept of afterlife for all people. It became one of several possible levels of Hades which departed souls might find themselves in, depending on a favorable judgement passed on their conduct by the Underworld judges Minos, Rhadamanthys and Aeacus.
Importantly though, Ancient Greek religion was hugely varied and constantly evolving, so this wasn't the only theory or iteration.
There doesn't seem to be any agreement on the etymology of the word beyond the Ancient Greek, but one source I found suggested that it might have something to do with another Greek word, which is the verb meaning "to relieve or release." In that interpretation, Elysium might have been the paradise which promised relief from the pain and burdens of living.

It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more R Scott, last entry.... For God's sake look after our people.
- Capt. Robert Scott
The last diary entry on 29 March 1912 before Scott of the Antarctic died. He was only eleven miles away from safety but had been trapped in a fearsome blizzard for nine days.
One of his last letters was to his close friend and the author of Peter Pan,  J.M. Barrie: 'More practically I want you to help my widow and my boy- your godson. We are showing that Englishmen can still die with a bold spirit, fighting it out to the end.'

A Robert Scott stamp of approval is worth its weight in gold. I'm sure he's directly commented on many bands before, but I can't recall another direct endorsement from The Bats leader.
But of Hannah Everingham (Christchurch, New Zealand), Scott says, "Go see her". Leather Jacket Records is releasing her LP in March 2024. Everingham's music reminds me of Tiny Ruins, Vashti Bunyan, Diana Darby and Local Tourist.
She has toured with the aforementioned Tiny Ruins and Lawrence Arabia.

Electric Blood, “Boot Your Car” (1984)
Even by the standards of early Flying Nun, the production on Electric Blood, one of Robert Scott’s early side projects, this is a bit rough.

The Black Series - (2022)
Some of The Avengers sporting a black version of their iconic suits. Before you ask “Where is Bucky?”, “Where is Nat?”, etc...their suits are already black or dark blue so I didn’t see the point of including them in this series BUT I’m currently working on a new one and they’ll definitely be there. ♥

Alpaca Brothers are back. Part of the legendary Flying Nun/New Zealand scene in the 1980s, the Alpaca Brothers (Dunedin) never really broke through the way some Kiwi bands did.
This is their first release since 1986! And to me, it still sounds like 1986. There is a definite Gordons, Bill Direen/The Bilders sound here. But, there is also pop - I mean, Robert Scott is the bassist (yes, THE Robert Scott of The Bats/The Clean). At times the vocals remind me a bit of Chloe Escott (The Native Cats) or Hamish Kilgour.
This is being released by Zelle Records (Austria). This label has an unabashed affinity for New Zealand sounds. Check out their catalogue at Zelle Records.
