“As far as children can tell, their mom and dad know everything and can do anything. And kids typically don’t question that assumption without reason (for example, if they see a parent mishandle a situation or someone else influences their level of trust). Plagues in the Bible Lesson 01: Introduction

Lesson 01: introduction

Most people have a passing familiarity with plagues in the Bible like the ten plagues of Egypt. Perhaps some people may have heard of the last seven plagues in Revelation. Everyone understands plagues are a bad thing. However, does God really allow plagues to happen for the sake of punishment and destruction? Are there any spiritual lessons we can learn from plagues in the Bible? Let’s find out together.

What is a plague? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a plague is defined as a disastrous evil or calamity. A plague could be an epidemic disease with a high mortality rate or a destructive influx of a noxious animal.

Let’s read together Genesis 12:1-20 and Genesis 17:1-19.

The first mention of plagues in the Bible is surprisingly not in the book of Exodus. It appears in the book of Genesis. Abram convinced his wife Sarai to lie to the Egyptians and tell them that she was his sister. Pharaoh saw how beautiful she was and treated Abram well for her sake. However, Pharaoh intended to take Sarai as his wife.

Why did God seemingly punish Pharaoh for Abraham’s deception? Note that God made a covenant to make a great nation out of Abram and Sarai. (We can confirm Sarai was part of the covenant promise a few chapters later when God rejected Ishmael as the heir of promise.) Abram’s lie about Sarah was about to derail that promise. God plagued Pharaoh’s household to prevent Pharaoh from consummating a marriage with Sarai.

When Pharaoh found out the truth, he rebuked Abram for potentially bringing disaster upon him. Pharaoh then sent Abram and Sarai away in peace.

Let’s read together Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28.

Sometimes God’s will is seemingly thwarted by the actions of sinful men. Sometimes God has to take drastic action to prevent a bad thing from happening. In this case, we can see how a plague turned out for good.

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God — Romans 8:2

The Holy Spirit becomes to the consecrated heart the Spirit of intercession. We have two Advocates. We have an Advocate with the Father, who prays for us at God's right hand. We also have the Holy Spirit, the Advocate within who prays in us, inspiring our petitions and presenting them, through Christ, to God. We need this Advocate. We know not what to pray for and we know not how to pray as we ought, but He breathes in the holy heart the desires that we may not always understand, the, groanings which we could not utter. God understands, and He, with a loving Father's heart, is always searching our hearts to find the Spirit's prayer and to answer it. He finds many a prayer there that we have not discovered, and answers many a cry that we never understood. And when we reach our heavenly home and read the records of life, we shall better know and appreciate the infinite love of that Divine Friend who has watched within as the Spirit of prayer and breathed out our every need to the heart of God.

“In all circumstances part 1: trust in God's character” By Antique Candle Co.:

“Why is it that we most often seek the Lord during the valleys of life? We know from His Word that He wants us to seek Him in every season. During the peaks, with moments of great joy and celebration; during the valleys, in times of worry and uncertainty. Not only does He desire His children to seek Him out, but He calls us to be faithful in all circumstances.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding...” —Proverbs 3:5

Trusting in the Lord's character allows us to find hope in every situation. It's not just about trusting God to get us through the difficult moments, but fully trusting in who He is, which extends to every moment of life.

So what is God's character? Many things. God cannot be compared to anything else in all creation. He created all things. Therefore, there are some attributes of Christ we can and cannot understand. We can't understand being 'unchanging' or 'all-knowing' ourselves because, as we are finite beings, we are neither. However, His Word tells us these truths about Him so that we may trust the characteristics that are unique to God alone. We can see and acknowledge the truth of His character in the Word and in our own lives.

GOD IS UNCHANGING:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” —Hebrews 13:8

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” —James 1:17

GOD IS FAITHFUL:

“...if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.” —2 Timothy 2:13

“The Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever and his faithfulness to all generations.” —Psalm 100:5

GOD IS ALL-KNOWING:

“He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge—the Lord—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath.” —Psalm 94:9

GOD IS SOVEREIGN:

“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” —Romans 11:36

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight.” —Ephesians 1:7-8

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” —Matthew 24:14

Place your trust in a God who is unchanging, faithful, all-knowing, sovereign, and so much more. In all circumstances, His character is something that will never fail.”
