Review: Rooue’s new dreamy, dark-pop blend ‘overdraft’ shifts between tenderness and resentment with a sound to match
The twin duo Rooue have been sharing their work worldwide since 2020, merging together stylings that couldn’t be farther from one another - and yet their carefully scheming brains make it feels like it’s never been any other way. With a lifetime already spent together, this inseparable pair aren’t just fused together by blood but just as much in thought, offering double the insane amount of talent and ambition in one reckoning force known as Rooue.
As they unveil the second single from their upcoming debut EP, Rooue share the next snippet into what can be expected of their upcoming project inside of ‘overdraft’, a genre-shifting concoction of emotion and impulse. The introduction alone is enough to understand what sets ‘overdraft’ apart, with the duo’s solitary harmonised vocals working in unison with a twist - a clean, soaring delivery takes hold front and centre while backing harmonies are electronically smothered, like a battle between heart and head represented in musical form. The verse finds itself rooted in vulnerability though, as the powerful vocals shake off the opening’s dark-pop undertones and reach into powerful heights, complemented by a tender arrangement of poignant piano keys and scattered electronic beats. The lyrics are just as pained, insightfully peering into love and loss from the perspective of someone emotionally abused by a partner: ‘guess I knew from the start, I’d end up wearing all your scars.’
This rawness is heavy on the heart and yet with time becomes catchy all the same, progressively building in intensity and force as things hurtle towards the highly anticipated chorus. Rising in volume while adding a few extra layers and synthetic whirs, the once broken-feeling beginning becomes something more of a resentful and angered punch of realisation, singing ‘you sabotaged your health, then called me for help?’ Coming to terms with the fact they were manipulated, ‘overdraft’ isn’t afraid to be truthful and authentic about it all, flowing out like the pages of a confessional diary page still seeking answers and closure.
As the chorus brings together the best of both worlds, ‘overdraft’ hits its peak with a moment that urges for your full focus, weaving both the electronically low-toned backing vocals and impressively bold leading lines into one. The sound simmers to match, an emotionally heightened reflection that’s just as healing as it is achingly real with the pair sharing all-too weighty thoughts like: ‘gave you all my love now I’ve nothing left.’ But as much as they feel beaten down, the sonic development that ‘overdraft’ bears is one that’s equally hopeful, offering a silver lining to anyone listening along and relating just that little bit too much that they’ll be able to make it out the other side too. If ‘overdraft’ is that anthem you need to hear right now, don’t hesitate to give it a play yourself here.
