#Rose and Lark review books

When you think of Ancient Rome, what often comes to mind is debauchery coupled with almost puritanical morals. Orgies. Vestal Virgins. Nero and Caligula. You know, the juicy stuff that peppered both HBO and PBS.
But what was the truth? Is it closer to the sex fueled fantasies of 1970s x-rated films and pearl clutching Christian saints? Or is it the dry and politics heavy shenanigans of I, Claudius.
The truth is amusingly revealed in this really fun historical quick-read by LJ Trafford.
Tumblr media
First off, I need to level with you. I got this book because of the cover. This is one of my favorite paintings in the history of ever (Lorenzo Lotto’s Venus and Cupid) and every time I go to the MET in NYC I have to spend some time communing with it. It’s just that bonkers and fun and faboo. (I have a thing for odd Renaissance and Medieval art.)
So I should have been clued in that by selecting this picture the book itself is also just as fun and whimsical as the painting, and like the painting there is a whole lot more going on when you scratch the surface. Using primary sources of the day, Trafford explains that like many cultures and civilizations that there was nuance and hypocrisy when it came to Ancient Roman views on sex and sexuality. And that like many ancient (and let’s face it, modern) civilizations that the expectations differed between classes and genders.
Tumblr media
The book is written in an amazingly readable format, and I often found myself laughing out loud at several turns of phrase. I managed to read this book while undergoing treatment for two different kinds of cancer and it was just the distraction I needed. The author was a tour guide in a previous life and it shows. The way the history and primary resources are presented are geared for a lay audience who wants to learn more after binging HBO’s Rome or Masterpiece Theater’s I, Claudius.
Readers do need to be aware that there is a lot of swear words, but this shouldn’t be surprising considering the graffiti that has survived from the period. It can be shocking if you think of Rome as a bunch of stuffy senators and pearl-clutching early Christians. But Rome is/was a very earthy and messy place (often literally) and this book doesn’t shy away from that.
I honestly enjoyed it.
Five Stars.

As a sequel, BAYOU MOON follows William, a secondary character from ON THE EDGE. Other than answering very briefly how Rose and Declan are doing, it doesn't try to wrap up anything from the first book. It's an entirely new storyline, with the entire plot as a pile of major things that are introduced and resolved. It gives the characters a new status by the end, one which doesn't require major updates unless they have another adventure in the series. It's not trying to leave things for later (other than that the character may appear in future books), and ON THE EDGE didn't leave much for BAYOU MOON to wrap up. It seems to tease the possibility of future updates on the kids (Jack and George from the first book, plus Lark and Gaston from this one), but wouldn't require them.

Book Review: “Harrowing the Dragon” by Patricia A. McKillip
Tumblr media
Rating: 3/5
Title: Harrowing the Dragon
Author: Patricia A. McKillip
Pages: 308
Review:
This collection of fifteen short stories was a bit disappointing. All of them have the usual fairy tale feeling, mysterious magical atmosphere and beautiful writing that the author is known for, but I enjoyed some stories more than others and a lot of them felt incomplete. Most of these stories felt like ideas that weren’t fully fleshed out, which is a shame because I loved a lot of these ideas.
So far, I’ve read “The Riddle Master of Hed”, “The Forgotten Beasts of Eld”, “The Changeling Sea” and “Winter Rose”. This book was the one I liked the least. Short stories are hard to pull off and need to rely on strong themes and writing in order for me to enjoy them. I wonder if the other books of short stories by this author are similar to this one. I want to eventually read all of her works, but I might leave those for last.
This book includes the following stories: The Harrowing of the Dragon of Hoarsbreath; A Matter of Music; A Troll and Two Roses; Baba Yaga and the Sorceror's Son; The  Fellowship of the Dragon; Lady of the Skulls; The Snow Queen; Ash, Wood, Fire; The Stranger; Transmutations; The Lion and the Lark; The Witches of Junket; Star-Crossed; Voyage into the Heart; Toad.
“A Matter of Music” was really long and somewhat boring. Now I worry that I will not like the novel the author has about bards since I wasn’t much of a fan of this one.
"The  Fellowship of the Dragon" and "Lady of the Skulls" had amazing concepts, but they felt unfinished. I would have preferred a novel dedicated to each of those stories.
My favourites were “A Troll and Two Roses” and “The Stranger”. “The Stranger” reminded me a bit of “The Changeling Sea”. The story “Baba Yaga and the Sorceror's Son" was the most fun.
Since I have been reading this book slowly for a few months I already forgot some of the stories, which means they didn’t leave a big impression on me.
Overall, this was enjoyable, but not the best work I’ve read from the author.

so i read Ilona Andrew's "Edge" books twice and I really like them and stayed up late reading them quite a few times
rambling review beneath the cut
i bought and read the 4th book first because it was on sale, thought it was really good, but actually when i went back and read the other 3 books, the other 3 books were better
You can read these out of order like i did, but it's really better to read them in order to get the overall narrative buildup and also have a better understanding of who all the characters are as they do make appearances in the other books as well. Some characters I actually liked better once I read the books in order.
i don't want to grade the books but i can rank them
- Fate's Edge (book 3) - I really didn't think I'd like this one tbh, the cover really didn't match the book, and the LI was someone that I was kinda meh about in book 4 (the first book i read), but i was wrong and it was really fun to read. The black sheep scam artist LI of the Mar family finally meets his match in a master thief whose specialty magic is lockpicking. I really like their dynamic and she sees through his bullshit throughout the whole book and it's just fun to read their interactions. She just roasts him and shoots him down every other page. She's funny and smart, her family is shit, but she's still kind and I love her interactions with George and Jack.
- Bayou Moon (book 2) - this was a toss up because book 1 and book 2 are really more tightly wound together and more companion pieces kinda. I like them both, but book 2 slightly wins out more because I really like the LI who's a changeling werewolf, and the MC is really badass but still very human. She's smart, funny, and kind, but she's worn out and beat up by her life as she's head of her family clan and they've been feuding with a rival clan for 50+ years. She can also wield her magic to use her sword to cut through anything.
- On the Edge (book 1) - sets the stage for the series. I really like Rose (the MC) and her family dynamic with her brothers. Her brothers actually really steal the show in all 4 books, i love them, especially Jack. The LI starts out eh, but as the story pics up steam his personality begins to shine through and becomes more human because of Rose.
- Steel's Edge (book 4) - the MC is a healer (i made a post about this book previously) and she teams up with the LI to take on a crime/slaving ring and uncovers how deep it goes. The book is still good, I really like Richard (the LI) - he has strong Westley (Princess Bride) vibes, and once you read the other books it ties up the over reaching story. But once you've read the other books, this story's actually eh compared them.
I hope the author(s) do another book on Rose's brothers - George and Jack, even Gaston or Lark.
The books are Urban Fantasy Romance with slight horror, and out of all the series I've read by this author(s), I rank this series behind her Kate Daniels series but ahead of her Prime series.

Review: Sunshield
Tumblr media
Sunshield by Emily B. Martin My rating: 5 of 5 stars Sunshield is the first novel in an epic fantasy duology, Outlaw Road with three central POV characters, Prince Veran, an Eastern ambassador from the Silverwood, Tamsin, a woman who has been kidnapped, brutalized, and held prisoner under horrible conditions, and Lark, the famed Sunshield bandit. The story alternates between these three figures and the link between them evolves over the course of this first novel. As the story opens, Veran and his friend Princess Eloise are at the court of Alcoro, to meet with Prince Iano, soon to be crowned king. Veran, Eloise, and we thought Iano, were meeting to discuss the abolition of trafficking children and young adults as slave labor in the Eastern kingdoms. After more than a year of correspondence about the issue, it now seems as if court intrigue has disrupted that plan completely. Veran, an inexperienced young man with little diplomatic skill, but a good heart still hopes to broker change. Surprisingly, he and Iano manage to connect on the idea of finding Lark, to search for a missing member of Iano's court. Lark, an interesting character, was at one time a victim of trafficking herself but she managed to escape. Her life is now a hard scrapple existence as she tries to protect children she has rescued from trafficking rings, earning her reputation as a fierce bandit. Lark doesn't just steal money and goods, she rescues children who have been stolen from their families, including some so young, they don't even know family surname or where their families were from. Finally, Tamsin, as we learn over the course of the novel, seems to have been kidnapped to silence her voice and influence. One of the things I loved about this world is the presence of characters with disability issues. Lark's chosen sister Rose is an amputee who tells Lark off for regarding her as somehow less able to do her job. And Veran suffers from epilepsy but forges ahead with his brave plans. Thanks to Rose, Lark looks at Veran in a different light when they are thrown together. I also appreciated the role that color and culture play in Alcoro's court. So many hidden meanings and alliances are conveyed by the color of clothes in Alcoro's court. It is a fascinating world. The audiobook, narrated by Chelsea Stephens, Lauren Ezzo, and Matthew Frow, is an excellent production that gives a distinct voice and manner to each of the central characters.
I look forward to the final book in Outlaw Road duology, Floodpath: A Novel.I received a digital and paper review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Inclined to mention the halo of a mountain, somewhere I am fourteen years old. This is a mountain behind a house where I still remain, in this thought-process, every child chews spearmint gum. It is definitely spearmint gum, and the mountain is only a halo, now, this time, elsewhere. Like, I don’t know, like Mark Fisher says, this stasis has been buried – ‘the inventor of the term, a frustrating thinker’.

Geyser
Soul rumbles as grumble dark bellows push their boiling fist. Hot drops, boiled rain.
Angry fats splatter into faint signs, streaks of early mournful light.
Fire waters bubble and churn chained by conventions, damned by convection. In breaking songs of earth’s heat, brash displays of prorogued grief.
Water crouches, fluid evasive. As pain it cannot be broken. Desire free to flow, hurt a haunt of generations.
So strictures die and violence will be a multiple of passing times.

The Dream
I had a dream last night Of walking thru a forest-like place Filled with earthy illuminances
I could barely make out the sharp Round edges of branches and limbs Bathed in a heavenly glow

And for the briefest of moments I believed to be back home among these ancient pines Until my eyes opened to the sterile white walls

Judgement Day
April 19, 2020
We have great news for the planet earth that little speck of dust in god’s eye. It took us awhile to realize that your planet hasn’t been judged when it should have been centuries ago. There have been complaints brought up concerning your Judgement Day from those that were saved and rose to heaven through his glory. Our lord has been real busy moving through his infinite space looking over his crops of newly created worlds and forgot all about his first endeavor to create a man and a woman that would make him proud and praise his glory to the end of days. So people of earth god will be sending you an interim judge to guide all of you to your place in this ever changing universe. We want to once again say were sorry but it looks like the planet he created is full of thieves so this particular Judgment Day is just what it stands for, in one day all will be sent where they deserve to dwell.
Now satan is really delirious and excited for all the ungodly people he will make suffer for their selfish actions on this earth.
What irony for now god will destroy their salvation by just one simple verse in Proverbs 22:9, “He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”
Angels were created to do one thing and one thing only to serve god our holy, almighty father, faithfully with purpose, and then host his powerful return to this god forsaken speck of dirt and yes he will show boat a bit, but still good publicity, for the sinners must purge their blinded faith to express thanks for his son’s beaten bloodied body on the cross dying for our sins that got rave reviews in heaven and later on earth and if that didn’t wake the world up to his son’s caring sacrifice then god can forsake the souls living right now in-between our lord and his rival, satan. Ok, ok the angels do have other duties and one of these duties is to be “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation,” Hebrew 1:14.
I must say the angels seem to be the ones either destroying the earth, lets go ahead and name them because everyone should get to know them intimately, Abaddon, Beelzebub and of course Satan or the other angels helping earth survive with the help of Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, and through our centuries of wars, cruelty, religious zealots, psychopaths, poverty, racism, greed, criminality, wealth, hatred, slavery we never experienced any saintly presence that came to us in physical form, only words from a book that demanded we save ourselves by believing in a future ruled by religious zealots that hated themselves and the people they preached to. They demanded an apocalyptic end where only the true believers will be saved.
But our god didn’t just sit on his holy throne and judge us, what kind of god has only our judgement to oversee, for we are just mere specks of life in his infinite mind.
I could go on but you get the point his majesty, our savior, was and is very busy running here than there and then back again through his universe of dark space checking out the other inhabitants of his infinite planets created in a lark of impulsiveness and soon regretted but still his choices must be represented as perfect and therefore he marks off whether these new and old planets with their inhabitants growing in numbers and asks himself will they make the grade or fail his omnipotent will, demanding his loyalty test of their loving faith. Now I just want to say that yes there are infinite planets all through this spacial void of in cohesive certainty but we do know gods ego is pretty big and he will always say to his golden angels, caretakers of his throne, the more the merrier to praise me and adore my presence. Now think about this, just one wrong answer could sway his vote for absolute destruction of your planet or any other inhabitant planet roaming through space in this universe oblivious to their doom. But in our own case we have always had ministers of godlessness demanding our demise and their cruelty will certainly not pass mustard with our savior, for he is the righteous and the path to glory, let us pray!
Now don’t get mad at me, for look no further than Adam and Eve, newbies to gods ultimate ever-changing reality and not knowing fully god’s desires and by one simple choice of pleasure over hunger did them in forever. I have always wondered did theses outcasts finally make it up to the heavens above this earth somewhere or were they condemned to the fiery hell of infinite pain for just being human?
But they did keep to god’s purpose after they were booted out of eden so they must be in a sort of middle-heaven, purgatory enjoying the same confusion they experienced back in their original days as we their children multiplied by the billions and face the same wrath as our original parents had to deal with, an angry god couldn’t control them and now us. So we too might have to look forward to being kicked out of paradise as well. God should remember, hell has no fury like a population scorned!
But man’s interpretation of the scripture is riddled with their own presumptions of a text that is elusive and really anything can be seen and felt in words that are not really present, external to our inner hope. Faith as we know it is blind and being blind we search in darkness for a purpose other than being rooted in our own constant questions that have no answers, and now manipulated by technology to buy, buy and be happy staring at a screen while the world slips by you.
Lord god give me strength! For we don’t have to look to religion to find you, god is present in us all. But as evolved conscious homo sapiens we are addicted to the wonders of the external world we have been placed in and we tend to get sidetracked into depending on someone, or something else to give us a peace of mind that, yes, confirms that we will be saved. Can I get a hallelujah, Jesus will you be my date to our heavenly party!
But what is saving you right now, this minute from the violence, sickness, criminality, murder of innocence, wars, wealth, greed… wake up this is our paradise and you are being displaced, from enjoying the beauty of this earth by men and women with no morals. And these heathens of vice place profits over human beings, for we are expendable, the new builders of the tower of babel for their physical pleasures.
We humans are a confused bunch of hypocrites for we seek answers we all ready know.
That in itself doesn’t look good for us beings of delirious envy, hatred, selfishness, pent up anger, amoral behavior, cruelty, and a death wish to leave this planet without experiencing its full beauty.
Inherit salvation is an interesting way to phrase our glorious rise to the heavenly clouds, hopefully we will not have to use our wings too much until we can get use to flying around nosing in on others business. I always wondered if the wealthy that inherit their parents criminal activities will also steal their way into the holy paradise by slipping a few million here and there to grease the way into a primo house on a mountain top overlooking the universe, inviting only the elites to their hipster pad, “hey man just chill we are dead don’t you feel it,” a lifting of pressure off the brain, our once survival instincts now on hold until we can figure out what kind of money scams we can run in this so called paradise. Damn it is cold up here in space without a workable heater!
I don’t think their can be anything more evil than the bloodshed that has been active on this planet from the very beginning of time. We are basically like all animals with a predatory mentality which leads to an addiction to power over others.
We seek power over the herd at their expense not ours for we steal according to the law of the land that we made up in case someone has the nerve to accuse us of robbery and then we will have to sue them for their honesty and moral character for we will have none of that we just want to be greedy with our mouths watering for our next robbery. Praise the lord!
Seeking heaven was their scam from the beginning of our intellectual development, we made it into a stronger force of human limitations. Don’t do that, oh don’t do that thing, all to control the masses by keeping them in their place, believing in a savior that hasn’t returned to save these poor sods that have been roped into a faith that postpones the glory of heaven here on earth and makes the people wish for death so they can rise up to paradise and meet their anonymous maker. How stupid do we have to be to give up on this place we call home, this planet, and bet on an imaginary place where god waits for his children to die and then accepts them into his arms. That is freaky and could make a great horror movie. Oh wait we are living in a horror movie as the planet dies and the inhabitants seek solace in technology and we suffer with a virus ignored that is spreading and killing innocent human beings.
What a crock of cow dung we have stepped in! The rich suckered us and polluted this beautiful earth for profit and power became the holy grail which allowed them to become the controlling force over the population, by putting the fear of god into them and making people puppets on a string doing what ever they were asked, good or bad just to get closer to leaving this planet for god and the stars!
Human nature can easily be exploited by social media tapping into your posted fears and likes, which led these criminals of power to believe that they are now the new gods of this world.
A controlling force over all countries is the criminal mind’s miracle of excess.
Religion was the vehicle that made their power easy to obtain.
Look upward to the heavenly skies, if we can just get a lock on the thrilling triangulation we will be able to pinpoint where heaven is and then we can all wait to die in his glory, in abject poverty and be presented before his thrown, if he is present for us, as we know jesus likes to travel like his father does around this infinite universe and peek in on some of the other civilization his holy father created and some can really get down and party but enough of making jesus out to be a party hound we must all seek the same goal to find our final rating place, amen. I just prey to mother Mary that my rating can match my credit card score.
Lets all kneel and pray for our future resurrection to a heaven built for a large crowd, it would seem to allow all of us to mingle in glee without purpose, for what is the purpose of billions of people living in one spacial anomaly, I don’t care how beautiful god makes heaven he will still have to first eliminate from his flocks mind any record of their time spent on this corrupt planet without him visiting to see how things were progressing.
Yes, yes he sent his only son to earth but hey we expected better of god, at least make a cameo appearance even if it is just once in 20 centuries. All would have been all right it our lord would have given us a l 15 minute broadcast of his love for us and that would have placated the glorious ministers of fraud.
However, our anger would anger him and then he would suddenly disappear with the help of the holy spirit once again, for god knows how long, well he would know but we wouldn’t.
He would think of us as loafers, cry babies ungrateful to have lived under his watchful eye, well he might add, that not all the time was I at home on my throne in the heavenly skies, I was traveling a lot, just like my son, we just love to travel especially when wars break out about every other month, some battle is raging, and your determination to kill anything and everyone for more power, you ignored or conveniently forgot one of my favorite commandments, “love thy neighbor as thyself,” obviously those words didn’t get into your hearts and yes, their will be repercussions for your lack of respect for my blessed words being so easily disregarded. True they were made up by my biblical interpreters but I felt those words were well focused in love for all and should have been put in with the ten commandments.
How can the people be so gullible to think their heaven awaits them after death and not in living their life in freedom and love for everyone in every precious moment that they exist!
“Now settle down,” the wealthy spokesman demands their attention, lets just relax and think this over a bit, we don’t want any revolution starting right now for we are just about ready to bring our savior up here to talk with you all! Yes, I said bring up our wonderful mentor, satan. We the elites couldn’t have people knowing the truth that we were the demons servants and that we controlled the population for centuries and made profits off their blood, sweat and tears and of course their deaths.
Death is the perfect ending for you people of overpowering hate, for you feel no pain until you are judged and depending on how that goes you either go down, up or are caught in-between. I’m going to guess it is the hot fires of hell, just thinking out loud.
Now what you all have been waiting for  over 2,000 long, long, long years hold it, relax, let me finish, now don’t go gaga for our god, savior and his mother the immaculate Mary for they will not be joining the festivities because they will be going out to the outer edge of infinity to check on a planet that might fit his and his mother’s budget for a new quiet place to stay when the stress of being god and the mother of god gives them too much anxiety, so without further a due here is gods substitute hear on this little dust spot called earth. Please lets have quiet, quiet please your new substitute god will speak, just have some patience and be courteous, please step to the back of the row if you are going to be aggressive in questioning your new substitute god, lets let him acclimate to this little speck of dung, oh excuse me now I am getting feisty you would think I could be more civil but I get angry sometimes when women get second rate status even under gods direct leadership and arch angel Michael, with his massive big ego flies around as if he is the next coming of christ when he is no more powerful that I am. I might have to cut his wings again for it takes a good two weeks for them to grow back and then he can flit around again as if he is the cat’s meow!
Ok, excuse me, quiet please, please in the back quit monkeying around and pay attention we have an announcement I would like to repeat because of your rude and loud behavior, I see you! hush now! god, jesus, Mary and the holy spirit will not be here today to unveil their new leadership commander that will be presented today to the human masses here on, where are we again, oh yeah earth and this commander will be present for now on, we hope, making sure the earth has its holy visitations even though it is from a new representative of our lord and I don’t want to seem ungrateful but lets be fair, god is tired of the corruption, hate, violence and murdering of innocence on this planet that your criminal minds are destroying without moral stability. But things are about to change and believe me when I get off this stink of a place I will fly to the sun and bake this smell off me but I digress, your god, savior and spiritual leader will at times be periodically inspecting the goings on with your new godly substitute! Unless he is too busy and then your substituted god will send all the paper work up the sky ladder to his excellence our holy father.
Hey, did you guys set up all the electrical cords and linked all their computers to our feed, remember they are a primitive animalistic people of greed and hate and I don’t want to stay another minute on this primitive planet, what, speak up edward, ok, everything is ready so we can broadcast this major event to the entire planet, to these folks without decency and morals. I don’t want another power surge like we had on the Mote.
May I welcome to this place of immoral wealth and degradation of god’s love your new substitute leader from heavens workshop made in your likeness and is sent to earth by god himself after hearing the prayers of your ego’s lost in their own cruelty, your new messiah, your very own Artificial Intelligence, Mr Perfect, just back from sending the majority of inhabitants from the Motram planet in the Altus galaxy to hell in a hand basket lets give Perfect a big warm welcome!
What was that, we are getting calls from outraged sinners taking offense that their god would send them a substitute savior? Finally I get to explain to you schmucks the bottom line! What? our savior wants me to relax and not go overboard and just stick to the facts, ok got it! damn I was ready to explode their little egos.
Ok, just the facts, god has lost interest in his garden of eden and he thought to himself that since he was god he could do anything he wanted so he created for you a new substitute savior. God realized he had to make him strong so he created his own glorious shinny new metallic AI and called him Mr. Perfect, because god new just as his son found out humans like to kill and torture other human beings. God new the people would be happy seeing a machine that looked like him, a handsome dude with long dark hair and a twinkle in his eye and laughter in his heart.
Let me just say that it galls me that you heathens of avarice put a skin color on your savior to make him look just like you but god looks like everyone if you had taken the time to really see his truth.
And god has downloaded all your private info and public info into Mr Perfect so he will know you intimately, not in that way, but in his ability to forgive you your sins or punish you for your cruelty. This time around there will be no slush money given to the judges or guards for this time you will pay for your wicked behavior. You can’t buy your way out of this life. What you have done is what you will receive on your death bed.
For even though your new god is a mechanical human and doesn’t need food products or any sexual adventures he still wants to fit in quickly with the upper 1%, learning about their character, their inner selfishness and their evil is really why he is here and the more he learns of their shallow hypocrisy maybe there will be a way to eliminate that hunger of greed in others that all these multibillionaire sinners seem to exude and boy does it stink up any chance of going to heaven on this polluted rock.
Of course he needs a little more information on these criminals of craven disgust before he makes his decision but that won’t take long but he would like to see just what attracts people to steal from each other, what is it about human nature that makes it so easy to become murderous beings addicted to a godlike power with no respect for our lord’s children.
If Mr Perfect can dig deeper into your pathetic psyches he might find why humans have never responded well to beauty but seem to think that beauty and love of life is unnatural, the early corrupted preachers with thoughts of ascension to their place in heavens throne decided in their hate of themselves to accuse all that didn’t bow to their stature as prophets with god’s blessing be condemned to the burning stake of fire for their sacrilegious belief in the beauty of mother nature was a godless sin.
We still have these men and women of the cloth today making big bucks off their verbal hate for anyone opposed to their new multi-million dollar homes at the expense of their flock barely able to feed their own families and like other creatures of malicious intent they would rather see the earth polluted for once the earth is doomed then they are ready to rise to heaven in god’s love!
Accept it won’t be any picnic for them in an open field covered with beautiful flowers. It will be an all consuming darkness they are swept up in and deposited in the hell they created for others here on this planet.
Thank you Toni, lets have a big applause for this beautiful angel, “Thanks Mr. Perfect, just get me off this horrid poison pit of malice greed!”
Your new savior is ready to dish out your future lives whether it is here on this planet or below this planet or in heaven, which I admit gave me a sickening feeling of despair because I know where hell is and it is right here on this god forsaken speck of dust with greedy murderers playing god. Now don’t worry not all of you will feel my wrath but I must say quite a few, well billions will feel the immortal pain of a satanic evil. For once you chose to steel and murder for profits your eternal life of joy and happiness was gone immediately and you will be sent directly to the abyss, and let me stress I do mean the hellfire abyss of misery. Now don’t panic, take a deep breath it maybe your last, I do know everything about all of you, your holy father downloaded so much shit you have done I almost puked your sins up!
I must speak from my mechanical heart it is pounding now, how do you people stand it pounding in your chest like a man hammering nails into your coffin, oh sorry, I was told to be respectful and not mention death and hell or purgatory but keep it positive and upbeat so you fools I mean you human fools will not expect too much of my wrath when I unleash it, oops, I bad!
Over the next few weeks I will be communicating to our lord all the stats we have on you the people of earth and let me say that we have a hell of a lot of shit to go over and I won’t say how bad it is but looks like a lot of you will be in hell before you can say, “I am innocent, it is a mistake!” so have patience those of you that were loyal to god, oh, does he love that but for the rest of you that were lying to god, praying to his almighty to forgive you your sins of murder, rape, violence, abuse… you will suffer the flame of god’s wrath and believe me when I say run, run you idiots get away now but of course I am just joking by my calculations I can see all of you and will process your lives in no time so judgement will not be difficult but it will be for those that used this reality on this earth as your play thing and polluted it and destroyed countries for profit and then tried to hide behind the holy cross of jesus as your savior for you will not be saved! Amen

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Houston, 1961: comedy meets mystery and history. It's hard to be hard-boiled when your biggest fan and worst critic is your twelve-year-old daughter, especially when she's cracking your case for you and defending you from the bad guys, along with sidekicks human and feline. Houston is still a cowboy backwater, but Texas politicians dream big. P.I. Harry Lark is out to save the city for President Kennedy's moon mission. Dizzy Lark is out to save Harry. Jani Brooks of Romance Reviews Today calls Bayou City Burning “a terrific mystery loaded with humor, lots of excitement, and fascinating, well written characters” and rates it “a Perfect 10 book.”

D. B. Borton is the author of two mystery series—the Cat Caliban series (Berkley, Hilliard and Harris) and the Gilda Liberty series (Fawcett)—as well as the recent novels Second Coming, Smoke, and Bayou City Burning (all from Boomerang Books). She is Professor Emeritus of English at Ohio Wesleyan University. A native Texan, Borton became an ardent admirer of Nancy Drew at a young age. At the age of fourteen, she acquired her own blue roadster, trained on the freeways of Houston and the broad stretches of oil-endowed Texas highway, and began her travels. She also began a lifetime of political activism, working only for political candidates who lost. She left Texas at about the time everyone else arrived. In graduate school, Borton converted a lifetime of passionate reading and late-night movie-watching into a doctorate in English. She discovered that people would pay her to discuss literature and writing, although not much. But because she found young people interesting and entertaining and challenging, she became a college teacher, and survived many generations of college students. Later, during a career crisis, she discovered that people would pay her to tell stories, although even less than they would pay her to discuss stories written by someone else. Borton has lived in the Southwest and Midwest, and on the West Coast, where she has planted roses and collected three degrees in English without relinquishing her affection for the ways in which actual speakers constantly reinvent the language to meet their needs. In her spare time, she gardens, practices aikido, studies languages other than English, and, of course, watches movies and reads.

Nicole reviews a whimsical and charming new Middle Grade book, all about a girl in STEM. Perfect for the young scientist! Read what she has to say...
Weird Little Robots by Carolyn Crimi, illustrated by Corinna Luyken Penguin Random House  October 2019 Middle Grade
Quirky robots come to life in Carolyn Crimi's charming Middle Grade debut all about friendships, science, and magic. Eleven-year-old Penny Rose is an avid scientist whose mind shines bright with brilliant inventions. Using abandoned knick knacks, Penny Rose creates an adorable cast of robots. But in this little town, magic is brewing, and her little friends begin to move and talk on their own.
As this is happening, Penny Rose is also dealing with being the new kid at school. She quickly befriends Lark, a passionate birder with her very own crow friend. While both girls are keen scientists, Penny Rose soon learns that Lark is known as a bit of an oddball at school. So when Penny rose receives a mysterious invitation to a secret science society and Lark doesn't, Penny Rose has to choose between her friend and an exciting new adventure.
Nicole's rave: By far one of my favourite titles of 2019! Using clear and concise writing, the characters are well-developed and the issues richly explored. Penny Rose and Lark may be young, but the challenges faced and opportunities for growth are plentiful, making Weird Little Robots a wonderful reading experience. Told with heart and an appreciation to the complexity of middle grade years, this book does not attempt to simplify nor talk down to its readers. It's refreshing to see credence given to the nuance of young friendships and still nascent explorations of self without any compromise on the magic and charm so inherent to this genre. Along with a cast of endearing characters—including one brave squirrel—and equally charming illustrations, readers will fall in love with Weird Little Robots, and hopefully be inspired to create some magic of their very own!
Where to find in-store: Age 9
Perfect for fans of: Waylon! One Awesome Thing by Sara Pennypacker and illustrated by Marla Frazee, Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

During World War One, Captain Hastings is visiting friends in the British countryside when the matriarch of the family suddenly dies. Suspicion immediately falls upon the husband home everyone dislikes but there’s a mystery to this. Thankfully, the great detective, Hercule Poirot, Is living nearby. At the request of the family and his dear Hastings, Poirot is on the case.
Tumblr media
I’ve always loved the Hercule Poirot books. I find the little Belgian detective absolutely delightful especially in his kindness and childlike joy in making people happy. He’s got all of the intelligence of Sherlock Holmes but possesses the kindness of Dr. Watson. Yes, he’s a bit peculiar. He’s got his foibles and prejudices. But Oh my, is seeing him in his first appearance is fun. This is a classic Agatha Christie novel in every sense. It’s set in the British countryside. At the manor house. With a small cast of characters all of whom have the means more of an opportunity to commit the crime. The foreshadowing is there and it is on point.
Tumblr media
And then there’s the typical Agatha Christie twist. And it’s a twist because the clues are in there, but the way that they presented the read can end up discounting them. Much like the characters in the book discount the clues when they are presented them. This is what makes the twist effective. The reader has all of the information. The reader knows everything that Poirot knows. And still Christie can surprise you. It’s lovely.
Tumblr media
As stated before, this is the first published Hercule Poirot mystery. It was written in 1916 at the height of World War I. Which means that cultural and societal conventions of the time are in play. This includes things like casual racism and use of racist language regarding people of color including those of Roma and African descent. It also includes massive amounts of xenophobia which Britain is still well known for. And there’s also casual antisemitism because again this is the 1910s, there’s a reason Hitler was allowed to rise to power and why countries refused Jewish refugees and that reason is called Antisemitism. It’s important to know this going in. The words and the sentiments expressed in this novel are wrong, and they were wrong then. But they are still products of their time. And erasing them or refusing to allow people to read them is trying to erase that history. And our present is build upon this very real history. At the same time it’s important to have this context.
Tumblr media
As a historian, this book is a fascinating trip into the mindset of someone who lived through World War I and was writing about it contemporaneously. Yes, there is problematic language used, there always is in primary resources. And this can be considered a primary resource of life in the 1910s. Even thought it is fiction. The book is also a fun mystery with some really great characters. Which is why I’m going to get this five stars with the caveat that readers understand that they are reading a novel that is a product of its time. Five stars.

Reading Recap: August 2018
At the end of every month, I take a look back at my reading journal and share the books and my thoughts on them here. The comments below are excerpts from my full reviews on Goodreads; you can always keep up with my reading in real-time over there.
My Goodreads goal for the year was 71 books, and I hit it this month! So I’ve increased my goal to 91 books—this is the most I’ve ever read in my life, and I’m loving it. After being a guest on the What Should I Read Next? Podcast, I decided to start treating my love of reading as a hobby. Prior to that—for reasons I can’t articulate—I just didn’t see reading that way. It was something I did around the edges of the day, but it wasn’t a primary activity.
Since we moved to Prague, that’s changed. I watch only 1 hour of TV each day—and don’t read that in a snooty voice! I pass no judgment on TV-watching; I love TV-watching. I just like reading more. By the by, we usually work our way through a series, one episode per day until we’re done. Just finished season two of Riverdale, and I love it so much OMG. So campy and over-the-top. LOVE! I cannot wait for season three. Give me more Cheryl!
Anyway… back to reading. I deleted Twitter and my RSS reader from my phone so I don’t get sucked into the vortex. I always have my Kindle in my purse so I can take advantage of unexpected bench-sitting time or a long line. I listen to audiobooks and literary podcasts on my daily walks. And I read every night before bed, sometimes at lunch, and sometimes for 30-60 minutes in the morning, if I wake up before 6:00 a.m.
I am thoroughly enjoying this book nerdiness.
Pachinko byMin Jin Lee | 3 1/2 stars I really wanted to love this book, but for me, it was good, not great—which makes me feel kinda dumb because it received so many prestigious accolades. I respect it, but it didn’t touch my heart. To be fair, I’m beginning to think that sprawling family dramas are not for me. I prefer to be really connected to a smaller cast of characters in an atmospheric setting. There were so many people in this book and the way I thought of them was “the one that owns the pachinko parlor,” “the one that wants to be a scholar”… they never moved past 1-liners into real people for me. (My Goodreads review provides more detail, but also spoilers; proceed with caution.)
This book’s biggest strength—and it’s significant—is the way it brings an unknown-to-me part of history to light. I was only vaguely aware of the events leading up the U.S. Korean War, and it was fascinating—and sobering—to learn about the tensions and discrimination between the Korean and Japanese people.
Favorite highlight: “People are rotten everywhere you go. They’re no good. You want to see a very bad man? Make an ordinary man successful beyond his imagination. Let’s see how good he is when he can do whatever he wants.”
The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter  by Theodora Goss | 4 stars Just as Pachinko helped me realize multigenerational family sagas aren’t really for me, this book reinforced how much I love stories about found families. Set in Victorian England, this romping adventure includes not one, but FIVE plucky heroines, and I am here for it. If you enjoy the Veronica Speedwell series—A Curious Beginning, A Perilous Undertaking, A Treacherous Curse—then you will probably enjoy this one, too.
I don’t want to give too much away because the surprises are fun, but this story includes Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, the danger of poisoning, literary references, a traveling circus, an insane asylum, potentially evil nuns, and family secrets. What’s not to love?! (I also treated myself to the sequel European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman because it’s described as a “madcap romp” and the action takes place in Paris, Vienna, and Budapest.)
Favorite highlight: “No wonder men did not want women to wear bloomers. What could women accomplish if they did not have to continually mind their skirts, keep them from dragging in the mud or getting trampled on the steps of an omnibus? If they had pockets! With pockets, women could conquer the world!”
I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life by Anne Bogel | 5 stars It’s no secret that I adore Anne Bogel’s podcast What Should I Read Next? so I had high expectations for this collection of essays. On her podcast, Anne is just the kind of person with whom you’d want to discuss books: opinionated but not pushy, insightful, relatable, and quick to laugh—all of that warmth and intelligence and sheer book love comes across in these essays. I read it over the course of a month or so, dipping into the essays between the other novels I was reading to cleanse my palate and to revel in the book nerdiness of reading.
I sometimes have a difficult time talking about my favorite books, or even really sharing how much reading means to me as a human—it feels too personal, makes me vulnerable in a way I’m not really ready for. But reading this book made me realize that there are legions of us out there: People who find friendship, solace, adventure, challenge, grief, joy—the whole gamut of human emotions—in the books that we read. And sometimes, they’re just damn fun.
I’d Rather Be Reading is just like that: lots of feels and damn fun.
Favorite highlight: “Old books, like old friends, are good for the soul. But they’re not just comfort reads. No, a good book is exciting to return to, because even though I’ve been there before, the landscape is always changing.”
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel | 4 stars Food, love, magic, and passion color this luscious family saga set in a Mexican border town around 1019, so the intimate story of the family is played out against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. The tale reads like a family legend that’s been passed down through generations, and it centers on the forbidden love of Tita and Pedro. As the youngest daugher, it’s Tita’s fate to forsake love and to care for her dominerring mother Mama Elena until her mother’s death. But Tita and Pedro fall madly in love: When Tita felt Pedro’s gaze on her “she understood exactly how raw dough must feel when it comes into contact with boiling oil.” To be close to Tita, Pedro marries her older sister, and no one’s life remains untouched by this flawed decision.
Tita’s life is spent in the kitchen—both a gift and a curse to her—and her cooking is infused with deep emotion and magic. To Tita, food is life, and each chapter represents a month of the year, opening with a recipe that intertwines with the characters’ lives. Tita’s tears wept into wedding cake batter induce a devastating sense of longing in the guests who take a bite, and a delicate sauce made of rose petals inspires dangerous passions around the dinner table.
As the plot traces Tita and Pedro’s lifelong love, we see its impact on the rest of the family and the village: Tita’s sisters, a kindly doctor, bouncing babies, and Mexican revolutionaries. It’s a delightful—and sad—story of family obligation, the things that feed us, and a passion that could not be extinguished.
Favorite highlight: “When the talk turns to eating, a subject of the greatest importance, only fools and sick men don’t give it the attention it deserves.”
Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier | 3 stars I went into this novel expecting a dark gothic adventure—thanks to previously reading Rebecca https://amzn.to/2BVakpp—and that’s exactly what I got—for better and for worse. Our heroine is definitely a damsel in distress, all muddle and forbidden love and quivering fear. I think I would have loved this book if Mary had some spunk, but instead, she kind of just bounces her way through the story. I found I enjoyed giving daily updates to my husband about what was happening a lot more than I actually enjoyed reading it. But for pure camp, it’s great: creepy isolated house, desolate moors, shady characters, an is-he-or-isn’t-he love interest, locked doors, a big character reveal, and plenty of stormy nights.
Favorite highlight: “The driver, muffled in a greatcoat to his ears, bent almost double in his seat in a faint endeavor to gain shelter from his own shoulders…”
Prague Spring by Simon Mawer | 4 1/2 stars Yay for British release dates: I got to read this book in time for the anniversary of Prague Spring on August 21—it’s available for pre-order now in the U.S.
This books examines what people are willing to risk for freedom and love. And if you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to accidentally get caught up in a potentially dangerous spy mission, this is the book for you.
It’s the summer of 1968—the summer of love—even, for a while, in communist Czechoslovakia. As tensions rise between Moscow and Prague in the background, this story follow the misadventures—romantic and otherwise—of two groups of people: an on-again-off-again British couple who cross the Iron Curtain on a lark as they listlessly backpack through Europe, and a group of Czech youths—eager to test the limits of the Czechoslovak “socialism with a human face”—who find themselves in an unexpected friendship with a British diplomat.
There are also world-famous musicians, bugged rooms, larks into the countryside, and secret meetings. The various threads of this sort-of spy story come together in a satisfying, heartbreaking way. There’s plenty of intrigue, interpersonal sparks, romance, adventure, and irresistible descriptions of Prague, as well as a cast of characters you won’t soon forget. (I also LOVED another book by Simon Mawer: The Glass Room.) http://meljoulwan.com/2018/07/23/reading-recap-june-2018/
Favorite highlight: “You haven’t lived here long enough,” Zdenek said. “No one can live in this place for long and still believe in reality.”

Wait I'm sorry for being misinformed, but the info about Paul calling Yoko a jap tart is not true? From what i read he sent a letter to john (i think) saying this. So it's not true? (because thank god if it's not true)
it’s okay, anon. let me reiterate:
the full message – if you believe francie, that is – was “you and your jap tart think you’re hot shit” and the full quote reads:
“John obviously loved Paul enough to let him run wild if it would help ease the tension Paul was creating in the studio and at home. Yoko could see it too.
But Paul was treating them like shit too. He even sent them a hate letter once, unsigned, typed. I brought it in with the morning mail. Paul put most of his fan mail in a big basket and let it sit for weeks, but John and Yoko opened every piece. When they go to the anonymous note, they looked puzzled, looking at each other with genuine pain in their eyes.
‘You and your Jap tart think you’re hot shit’, it said. John put it on the mantle, and in the afternoon, Paul hopped in, prancing much the same self-conscious way he did when we met.
‘Oh I just did that for a lark…’ he said in his most sugar-coated accent.
It was embarrassing. The three of us swiveled around, staring at him. You could see the pain in John. Yoko simply rose above it, feeling only sympathy for John. I was sad to see the Lennons go, even though it took the pressure off of Paul.”
putting aside that you can already read the clear bias between the lines, sometimes in other retellings of the story, it’s said to be a postcard and other times it’s a typewritten message left in an envelope. the discrepancies here alone should tell you something.
now, where does the claim come from? it comes from an ex-girlfriend of paul’s from the late 60s, who he has parted not on the best terms with: francie schwartz. francie wrote a book about her relationship with paul where francie claims that while john and yoko stayed at cavendish, they received a note saying “you and your jap tart think you’re hot shit”.
why is it bullshit? i have several points to make:
francie schwartz is one of the most unreliable sources in beatles history. ask any beatles researcher worth their salt on their opinion about francie and her book. what’s more important in this particular case: she relies almost exclusively on sensational claims to make her book body count (1972) more palatable and exciting to a general and broad public instead of actual proof. other such claims include paul having been sent love letters from brian; a claim just as insubstantial and without any actual tangible proof.
first off, to get a more personal picture of francie during the time she wrote and published her book you have to ackowledge her agenda as the scorned ex-lover as is evidenced by the book itself as it displays a great deal of vindictiveness towards paul. read body count and you’ll know what  i mean. it’s absolutely vile in places.
second, the book was published in 1972 – when paul’s critical reputation was possibly at one of its lowest points – and it was published by none other than jann wenner’s rolling stone press, which very obviously chose john’s side in the john versus paul breakup era split and which back in the day had a lot of sway in the music industry. the magazine wasn’t yet the joke it was to become. something else that is interesting and slightly related: jann wenner. paul’s critical acclaim wasn’t at it lowest point because mccartney (the album) was years ahead in its day and the press just didn’t get it, but because wenner directly influenced his reviewers to slam paul for – as wenner saw it – breaking up the beatles. here’s the relevant quote:
“When I became record reviews editor, I made it clear to him after a few months — nobody had done the job before me — that the record review section was an independent republic within the country of Rolling Stone. That meant that nobody else could tell me what to review or what a writer could say. They could argue with me, but ultimately it was my decision. And that worked well. There was one incident where Paul McCartney makes his first solo record and people thought it was wonderful: this rough, homemade one-man-band album. It was accompanied by a press release, a self-interview, about why he no longer needed the Beatles and how little he thought of them … this real obnoxious statement, you know? I assigned it to a friend of mine, Langdon Winner, and Jann saw the piece and said: “We can’t run it this way — he’s just reviewing it as if it’s this nice little record. It’s not just a nice little record, it’s a statement and it’s taking place in a context that we know: it’s one person breaking up the band. This is what needs to be talked about.” I said I didn’t agree and “in any case it’s up to Langdon to say what he wants to say.” Jann said, “We have to talk about this.” So we went to dinner that night and spent three fucking hours arguing about this record review. Finally he convinced me. So I went over to Langdon’s and sat down with him and spent three more hours arguing with him until I convinced him! Now to me this was the essence of great editing, of how you put out a publication that is utterly honest. All that time spent over one 750 word review! And it was worth it.”
—Greil Marcus in conversation with Simon Reynolds,
Los Angeles Review of Books
there are other instances where wenner displays his clear bias against paul, which was especially rampant in the time where paul was hailed as the talentless and flighty hack who did nothing more than book the studio for the beatles and john as the deeply misunderstood true lyrical and musical genius behind the beatles. a narrative that was formed then and persists to this day.
third, a number of writers – including, disappointingly, doggett and carlin – have recounted the “jap tart” episode from paul to john and yoko as fact, but it’s NOT. it’s the unverified retrospective eyewitness testimony years after it happened of a very much biased, secondhand source. we’ve never seen evidence from anyone else that this event occurred. no picture, no copy, nothing. just like any other event francie “remembers”, if i might add. and since other private notes and copies from letters and even journals exist from other and more deeply involved with the beatles people, it is suspicious.
even during “lennon remembers” – also done with involvement from wenner – john himself admits that his examples of the others treating yoko badly in the studio or elsewhere come off as him being paranoid. if he had indeed a clear and very much damning example, such as this “jap tart” postcard or typewritten message or handwritten note, why didn’t he bring it up? or, more glaringly, yoko herself? when discussing why she and john left cavendish in philip norman’s paul bio, she doesn’t mention this incident at all. why didn’t either of them ever bring up this incident in all the years after it supposedly occurred?
it’s also important to point out that the narrative that paul was an absolute and continuous horror to john and yoko during the let it be era is just that: a narrative. let’s see what yoko has to say:
“After the initial embarrassment, then – um, now Paul is being very nice to me. He’s nice, and a – a very, um, str– on the level, straight sense. Like, um, whenever there’s something happening at Apple, he explains to me, as if I should know, [inaudible] and things like that. And also whenever there’s something like they need a light man or something like that, he asks me if I know of anybody in the art world, and things like that.
And like, um, I can see that he’s just now suddenly changing his attitude, like he’s being – he’s treating me with respect. Not because it’s me – but because I belong to John. I hope that’s what it is, because that would be nice. And I feel like he’s my younger brother or something like that. I’m sure that if he had been a woman or something, he would have been a great threat – because there’s something definitely very strong between John and Paul.
And, um – and probably among those three people of George and Ringo and Paul, Paul is the only one that I can sort of feel the vibration [from]. Like, sort of sense it, you know, that something is among that. ‘Cause Ringo and George, I just can’t communicate. I mean, I’m sure that George and – I’m really sure that they’re both very nice people, but that’s not the point… I think that’s because being, uh, [because of John, Paul, and me] being air signs, like Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius.”
[x]
another point is the nature of the source itself: francie didn’t – at least as far as we know – write any of these instances down, be it in her diary, or even in a letter to her mother, with whom she stayed in contact during that time. all of which would have made the claim more credible, as those would have been never intended for public view and subsequent consumption as her book was.
she wrote them in her memoir, something she wanted people to buy, and there has been discussion that wenner encouraged her to promote the “sex and dissension” between paul and her and paul and the beatles in her work, because that’s what would sell and ensure publicity.
lasty, i’ve seen another valid point brought up: linguistics. “hot shit” is something that is more an americanism – francie is american – than something used in the late 60s by someone of liverpool descent.
tl;dr: francie’s claim is unfounded and to this very day has zero (0) proof to it.
i’ll include another good quote about the issue under a read more should you be interested.
While Erin toils in academia with an unusually heavy workload, I thought I would share another unpublished excerpt from The Historian And The Beatles regarding this now infamous statement attributed to Paul by his erstwhile lover, Francie Schwartz:
One example of Doggett’s occasional acceptance of unverified testimony as fact is his use of Francie Schwartz’s claim that the reason Lennon and Ono left McCartney’s London house (where they were temporarily staying) in Summer 1968 is because McCartney left the couple a postcard with the words “You and Your Jap Tart Think You’re Hot Shit” on it. Schwartz, McCartney’s girlfriend at the time, is the only source for this scene, (Body Count, 220) which, Doggett argues in both You Never Give Me Your Money and in a later interview with Oomska, initiated an irreparable wedge between Lennon and McCartney.
However, neither Lennon nor Ono ever mentioned this incident, even during Lennon Remembers, in which Lennon accuses the other Beatles of seriously mistreating Ono but also acknowledges that their offered examples of mistreatment are unconvincing: “Even when it’s written down, it’ll just look like I’m paranoid.” (Lennon Remembers, 44) Given that Schwartz portrays this incident as an extremely painful moment in Lennon’s relationship with McCartney, and that it directly led to Lennon and Ono departing Cavendish, it would presumably have been, for both Lennon and Ono, a particularly memorable moment. More, describing this incident would have heavily reinforced Lennon’s Lennon Remembers interview agenda to portray himself and Ono as victims of McCartney and the other Beatles. His failure to remember and recount the incident in this particular instance casts suspicions on the accuracy of Schwartz’s account.
While Garraghan declares that “the testimony of a single witness whose competence in every respect is above suspicion may be accepted as true,” (Garraghan, A Guide to Historical Method, 244) Schwartz does not qualify as a competent witness. Her brief relationship with McCartney ended badly when he told her to move out and Schwartz quickly sold articles about her time with McCartney to Rolling Stone and later produced a book, Body Count, in which Schwartz details the postcard scene. The Beatles Bibliography (which repeatedly discredits those pro-Lennon sources promoting the “Lennon Remembers” and Shout! versions of Beatles history) describes Body Count as “a travesty of a memoir,” in part because of its “self-serving and non-reflexive tone.” In credibility terms, Schwartz’s unverified eyewitness testimony is equal to that of the Apple Scruff claiming that Lennon once attempted to hit a pregnant Linda McCartney. While both Schwartz and the Apple Scruff’s claims are generally reinforced by circumstantial evidence (Schwartz by Beatles insider Derek Taylor’s claims that McCartney was sending him anonymous but ominous postcards in that same time period, the Scruff’s by Lennon’s admitted acts of occasional violence against women) Beatles writers who recount both scenes should explain that they are unverified testimony presented by an unreliable source.
Anyone still questioning whether Francie Schwartz is being truthful about the “jap tart” comment need only consider the point which Erin makes here: that J&Y would have been been screaming about this to the press to bolster their position that the rest of the band mistreated them/Yoko, had it been true.  I would also add that the vernacular–calling something or someone “hot shit”– sounds far more American than late 60’s British.  I think Schwartz gave herself away with that one.
I’m shocked that Doggett didn’t come up with those same, very simple observations.
What say ye, commentators?

i’ve also incorporated a lot of the points from the beatlesbible here.

Book Title: The Bird and the Sword Series: The Bird and the Sword Chronicles 1 Author: Amy Harmon Genre: Fantasy Romance Synopsis: (from Goodreads) The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love…a bird? My Rating: 5/5
Review (No major spoilers): With too little time, and too many books to read, I’m guilty of skimming long expositions and jumping to the good parts of a book. In recent memory, not since Laura Thalassa’s Rhapsodic did I savor each and every single line of a story. Amy Harmon made me love Lark so much, and parroting Tiras’ confession: “I was not supposed to love you. But I do. And it is terrible.”—terribly good that is.
As a romance fangirl, I’m hopelessly fixated with how swoony the hero is, with the heroine taking a backseat serving as the eyes to the fantastical world. But in Jeru I felt every pain Lark felt with each syllable she cannot speak. I felt the joy she felt when she learned each letter that was taken from her.
Following her enthusiasm for learning words was endearingly charming and touching, words that I…and those who speak often take for granted and carelessly spew about. Yes, my eyebrows rose as she was handled as a political pawn, but when they’re together Tiras treated her well. It was all a deliciously complicated mess of are we doing this thing we’re doing out of duty or out of love? Him teaching her patiently the simple language that was stolen from her made me fall hard for these two.
The tale reminded me so much of Howl’s Moving Castle (my fave anime ever, I know I need to read the book asap): a man’s struggles to retain his identity and the woman who is his salvation. In a fantasy setting, oftentimes action and politics take a front seat, but Amy’s prose remains grounded in the emotional development of the couple’s relationship, giving me all the feels, while telling me: it’s okay to be different—it’s a gift.

Tuna Rice Dog Treats
Bear, Laurel's lovable Labrador Retriever in the DIY Diva Mystery series, loves treats, and my dog Rocky volunteered to do a taste test for these tuna rice balls. Rocky gave them a paws up!
Although people can eat these tuna rice snacks, too, they may be a bit on the bland side since strong spices, onions, and garlic are all no-nos for dogs.
Ingredients 1/2 cup water 1 5-ounce can chunk light tuna, water packed 1/2 cup instant rice 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon Put water in saucepan. Open tuna can, leaving lid in place. Put the liquid from the tuna can into the saucepan by pressing it out with the lid. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add instant rice, and cover the saucepan immediately. Leave the cover on and let the rice cool to room temperature. When cooled, add the applesauce, cinnamon, and tuna and mix well. Pick up a rounded spoonful of the mixture, squeeze it so that it sticks together, and roll in a ball. Store in refrigerator for up to two days. These treats may also be frozen. If they will be frozen for a long time, wrap them individually in plastic wrap so that they won't become dry. Thaw frozen treats completely before giving them to your dog! Makes about fourteen 1-inch tuna rice dog treats.
Death by Proxy: A DIY Diva Mystery by Paula Darnell
About Death by Proxy
Death by Proxy: A DIY Diva Mystery Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series Cozy Cat Press (November 2019) Print Length ~220 Pages
With preparations for her upcoming wedding to handsome Wes Wesson, a Center City police lieutenant, on track and her DIY Bridal Crafts class at Hawkeye Haven's community center wrapped up, DIY Diva Laurel McMillan looks forward to a calm pre-nuptial week to finalize her wedding plans. There's only one problem: the week turns out to be anything but calm. Laurel and Wes narrowly escape being run down in the parking lot of their favorite restaurant. Laurel's bridal shower is interrupted by a mysterious stranger who sends Laurel's lovable chocolate Labrador retriever Bear into a frenzy, and when Laurel and Wes go to meet Lisa, their real estate agent, at a house she promised to show them, they discover Lisa's sister's body floating in the pool. Strangely, Lisa seems more concerned with selling houses than she does with her sister's death. After Lisa's mother inadvertently reveals family secrets, Laurel wonders whether Lisa could have killed her own sister. Will the mayhem and murder stop before Laurel discovers the key to the killer's game plan?
EXCERPT: “Duane Harris Wesson! Is that your idea of a proposal?” If I'd been standing, I'd have put my hands on my hips, but I was sitting beside Wes on the sofa in my den. He'd just suggested that a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi would make a great honeymoon, but he hadn't asked me to marry him! “Uh, definitely not.” My boyfriend grabbed a pillow, placed it on the tile floor in front of me, and knelt on the plush cushion. He took my hand. “Laurel, sweetheart, I love you, and I'd love for us to spend the rest of our lives together.” He fumbled in his jacket pocket for a moment before pulling out a small velvet-covered box. He opened it and took out a spectacular diamond ring. “Will you marry me?” “Yes!” I said breathlessly, and Wes slipped the stunning ring onto my finger. Bear, my chocolate Labrador retriever, had been snoozing on his bed in front of the fireplace, but sensing that something was up and not wanting to be left out, he came over and sat in front of me, next to Wes, and put his head on my lap. Wes put one arm around me and the other around Bear, as I leaned forward to kiss him. “Think I can get up now?” Wes asked. “Yes.” “Good,” He rose and sat beside me. “That's a relief. When you called me by all three of my names, I knew I had to up my game. When I was a kid, my mom used to say that to me when I was in trouble.” “Well, you're redeemed. Not many men would tolerate a dog nudging his way into a proposal. You're a very special man, and I love you madly.” Wes took me in his arms, and we managed a proper kiss before Bear began gently prodding us with his nose. “Don't worry, Bear,” Wes reassured him, as he scratched behind the inquisitive dog's ears. “You'll always be part of our family.”
About Paula Darnell
An instructor at five colleges over the years, Paula Darnell most often taught the dreaded first-year English composition classes, but she’s also been happy to teach some fun classes, such as fashion design, sewing, and jewelry making. Paula has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a Master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Like Laurel, the main character in Death by Association, Paula enjoys all kinds of arts and crafts. Some of her memorable projects include making a hat and a cape to wear to Royal Ascot, sewing wedding gowns for both her daughters, exhibiting her textile and mixed-media artwork in juried art shows, and having one of her jewelry projects accepted for inclusion in Leather Jewelry, published by Lark Books. She sells some of her jewelry and hair accessories in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/PaulaDJewelry.
Paula’s interest in DIY craft projects and fashion led to her writing hundreds of articles for print and online national publications.
Living in a guard-gated community governed by a homeowners’ association gave Paula the idea for the setting of Death by Association. She finds that residing in an HOA community can be both a blessing and a curse. A Happy-New-Year greeting from her community association called on residents to “start the new year by reviewing your Rules and Regulations booklet,” something unlikely to top anyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions.
Paula lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Gary and their 110-pound dog Rocky, whose favorite pastime is lurking in the kitchen, hoping for a handout.
