Just finished watching Halston on Netflix and ig it's an interesting watch especially if one is interested in fashion. All the performances in the film are commendable and it was a delight seeing the events of the 70s enacted in the film. Altho I generally appreciate Halston's chill and suave designs, I just find it kinda puzzling how the tie die caftan is showcased as something innovative when these styles originate from Asia. Also I did find the depiction of Victor Hugo/Victor Rojas as highly suspicious especially given that he's one of the few poc characters. While I definitely do not agree with his ways, I just find it extremely bizarre the way the show wants to make a villain out of Rojas. I did some minor research on Wikipedia abt Rojas and turns out he actually used to work for Andy Warhol and was an artist with a unique vision of his own. I'm not saying that the show doesn't showcase his artistic side, it's just not enough imo. I know this is a film about Halston so obviously much of the series will be focused on him. But at the same time I do find the depiction of Rojas as highly unfair. Also Ryan Murphy is one of the producers so ig one must avoid keeping their hopes too high lol.

In 2021 the limited series on the career of designer Halston (Roy Halston Frowick, portrayed by Ewan McGregor) waltzed down Netflix's catwalk. Now we have at least three series chronicling the lives and careers of designers.
Currently on Disney+ in Europe is the exquisite CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA centering on, guess who? Spanish designer Cristobal Balenciaga, starring Alberto San Juan (Reyes De La Noche) as Balenciaga.
Tumblr media
It's an interesting story about this enigmatic fashion genius that shows his steadfastness in his devotion to fashion to the sacrifice, some may say, of ethics due to the fact that while other fashion houses were shut down during Germany's occupation of some parts of France, he readily made clothes for the significant others of German soldiers.
Tumblr media
The series also shines a light on Balenciaga's relationship with his creative partner and love-of-his-life Wladzio d'Attainville (played by Thomas Coumans).
Tumblr media
Among the designers who appear or are name-checked in CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA is Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. These two fashion legends will appear in AppleTV+'s upcoming mini-series THE NEW LOOK with Ben Mendelsohn as Dior and Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel and takes place during Germany's occupation of France.
Tumblr media
youtube
THE NEW LOOK will feature covers of classics by Florence + and The Machine, Lana del Rey, The 1975, Perfume Genius and more.
Sometimes this year (at least I hope this year) will be KAISER KARL (apparently the title may be changed) starring Daniel Brühl as Kunty Karl Lagerfeld
Tumblr media Tumblr media
centering on him as a 38-year old trying to break into the Parisian world of high fashion where he finds himself in competition with he finds himself in competition with French fashion giants like Yves Saint Laurent.
The only Yves Saint Laurent depiction worth a damn. RIP beautiful Gaspard Ulliel
What is fashion if there's no one to wear it? For example, the high society ladies that will be depicted in the upcoming installment of FX's FEUD: CAPOTE VS. THE SWANS.
Tumblr media
Hopefully this series will do justice to the mythos behind writer Truman Capote's nuclear fall out with the so-called Swans - a moniker Capote gave the socialites whose company he kept and whose secrets he didn't.
Playing Capote is Tom Hollander
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naomi Watts as Babe Paley, wife of CBS founder William S. Paley (which the annual PaleyFest is named after), Diane Lane as Slim Keith, ex-wife of famed director Howard Hawks, producer Leland Hayward amongst others; Calista Flockhart as Lee Radziwill, sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Demi Moore Ann Woodward who got her place in society by being the wife of a banking heir,
Demi, that looks like a flamingo, not a swan.
Tumblr media
Chloe Sevigny as Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali muse C.Z. Guest, Molly Ringwald as JoAnne Carson, ex-wife of late-night talk show host Johnny Carson and the only Swan who remained friends with Capote after his ouster from their social circle.
Tumblr media
TBT Elle magazine getting animated with fashion.
Goofy as Kunty Karl Lagerfeld.

Designer Research:
Roy Halston Frowick:
Halston was one of the most popular American designers in the 20s, known for his ubiquitous designs in the 70s and 80s. He was popular for using ultrasuede which he used as his signature material. Reflecting on his career a year before his death in 1990, Halston said his work was “an experiment” that was “revolutionary in its day.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I love about his designs is the movement/ the flow of the garments. As simple as they may look, I love that they all looks elegant. I’m definitely trying out something with the inspiration I got his designs.

Diana Von Furstenberg.
In 1970 Diane von Furstenberg arrived in New York with suitcase full of jersey dresses and was encouraged by Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, Diane began to make her everlasting imprint on the fashion world and designed the now-iconic wrap dress in 1974. The wrap dress was completely different from what had been seen on the fashion scenes before. The instant sell-out was an international success, and put DVF’s name on the fashion map. A dress which is suitable for every kind of body type, that immediately makes us feel classy and ready for every occasion, it is a dress which has been worn by thousands of women, hundreds of celebrities, that was painted in every kind of colour and experimented with in all types of patterns.

Roy Halston Frowick.
Halston, the fashion designer became a leading designer of the '70s, ushering in the favourite silhouettes and glitzy look of the disco era. However,  before clothes, he designed hats, then in 1966, Halston launched his full-fledged fashion label with women’s ready-to-wear and couture. He didn’t give hats up, though, as they were included in the line, along with furs, leather goods, shoes, jewellery, and other accessories. In the early stages of his brand, Halston’s clothes were for men and women, making him one of the first to design a unisex collection. One of the designs that Halston popularized was the halter dress, which was a nightlife favourite for women. He was known for his sexy, flattering silhouettes that felt modern and used innovative materials like Ultrasuede.

In 1971 Saint Laurent shocked the public with the advertising campaign for the first men's fragrance, 'Pour Homme', which featured himself poses in the nude. Furthermore, in 2007 he was honoured and made a Grand Officer de la Legion d'honneur by French President Nicholas Sakozy.

The 1970s - part 4
The Designers
Diane Von Furstenberg
In 1969 Diane Von Furstenbergmarried her first husband Prince Egon of Furstenberg, she then launched her own-name fashion label in 1970. "The minute I knew I was about to be Egon's wife, I decided to have a career,” she has said. “I wanted to be someone of my own, and not just a plain little girl who got married beyond her desserts." She achieved her dream in spectacular style, launching her signature wrap dress in 1973. Almost 40 years later and there is still no wardrobe that’s considered complete without one.
The wrap dress was inspired by seeing former President Nixon’s daughter Julie Nixon Eisenhower wearing a wrap blouse with a wrap skirt. Diane Von Furstenburg used this image as her motivation to combine the two into one “wrap” piece.

Zhandra Rhodes
Zhandra Rhodes is an English fashion and textile designer. Her early education in fashion set the foundation for a career in the industry creating textile prints. She has designed garments for Diana, Princess of Wales and numerous celebrities such as rock stars Freddie Mercury and Marc Bolan
Her textile fashion designs were considered outrageous by the traditional British manufacturers, which made it hard to find work. In 1968 Zhandra Rhodes started a business with fashion designer Sylvia Ayton. The two designers opened a boutique called Fulham Road Clothes Shop. The business allowed Rhodes to create her textile designs onto garments designed by Sylvia Ayton. She produced her first collection showing loose, romantic garments.
In 1969, the two designers went their separate ways, with Rhodes establishing her own studio in Paddington in West London. As a freelancer she released her first solo collection. The collection of garments received recognition from both the British and American market. Marit Allen, editor of American Vogue at the time featured pieces of Rhodes’s collection in an issue. Receiving recognition by Marit Allen persuaded high end retailers likeHenri Bendel, Fortnum and Mason, Neiman Marcus, and Saks to purchase her collection. In addition, her own lifestyle proved to be as dramatic, glamorous and extrovert as her designs. With her hair a vivid shade of bright green (later changed to pink, and sometimes red or other colours), her face painted with theatrical makeup and audacious art jewellery, she stamped her identity on the international world of fashion.

Roy Halston Frowick
Roy Halston Frowick, best known as Halston, was an iconic clothing designer of the 1970s. His sexy, yet elegant dresses became a staple in American disco wear. He started off by designing hats but it was his dresses that made him famous. They were unique and streamlined. He worked with cashmere, silk and rayon jerseys, double-faced wools, and Ultrasuede. After two decades of dressing the jet-set, Halston was diagnosed with AIDS. He passed away in 1990.

Yves Saint Laurent
Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most famous and influential fashion designer of the 1970s. Drawing inspiration from menswear, foreign cultures, and historical periods, Saint Laurent crafted a new, chic, and modern way of dressing that became synonymous with the sexy and glamorous lifestyle of the decade.
YSL is probably most famous for "Le Smoking" tuxedo jacket, see- through blouses, peasant blouses, bolero jackets, pantsuits and smocks. By feminising the basic shapes of the male wardrobe, YSL set new standards for fashion across the world. He not only adapted the male tuxedo for women, but also safari jackets, pea jackets and flying suits. As well as this he was also one of the first designers to use ethnic minorities as models on the runway.

Who's Halston you been talking about?
Roy Halston Frowick ( known mononymously as Halston, was an American fashion designer who rose to international fame in the 1970s
His minimalist, clean designs, often made of cashmere or ultrasuede, were a new phenomenon in the mid-1970s discotheques and redefined American fashion. Halston was known for creating a relaxed urban lifestyle for American women.
He was frequently photographed at Studio 54 with his close friends Liza Minnelli, Bianca Jagger, Joe Eula, and Andy Warhol.
In the early 1950s, while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Halston began a business designing and making women's hats. He garnered a well-known clientele and opened a store on Chicago's Magnificent Mile in 1957.
He later became the head milliner for high-end New York City department store Bergdorf Goodman. His fame rose when he designed the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to the inauguration of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in 1961. In the late 1960s, Halston made the transition to women's clothing, opening a boutique on Madison Avenue in New York and started a ready-to-wear line. There's a documentary made by Netflix about him back in 2021
