Whoops I dam near forgot to make a second part for this incident, cause we actually got to meet Despair’s “daddy” during the academy's parent's day event. Guess this could be is the bonus scene where Doctor Strange and S'ym are reunited👁️👁️

Maddy!
Okay I'm going to give this my best but I still haven't finished her major history yet so these might be a little off because of that.
I think the person she was closest to and trusted the most on the X-Men, besides Alex, was Storm. She went to Ororo after Nathan was born to bring up her issues with Scott, and they seemed pretty close during outback era to me. Honestly I feel like Ororo would be a good person for Maddy to rekindle her friendship with now that she's been redeemed, because I feel like it's possible for Ororo to see behind the personality she's put on since Inferno. Also with Ororo's connection to magic it could be a really fun thing to explore.
I don't think what she feels for Alex is romantic love. Their relationship never comes off that way to me. Honestly it comes off a lot like she Thinks that she should love him like that, because he clearly loves her and she sort of needs a Prince for her act, but she doesn't really have a deep romantic bond with him. She definitely loves him in a way, but it doesn't really seem romantic to me and I think that the next part of her arc should be leaving him, but retaining their friendship and setting out to make new connections, people who can be a support network for her.
After her "dream" with S'ym it was Really easy for her to pretend like she hadn't changed at all in front of the group. She had to wake up and clean up the mess she had made after that, and it kind of infuriated her that no one had found her and thought to help, even though she knew they were away on a mission. But at first, switching back and forth between her old personality and her new persona was really easy. She didn't even really feel anything about it, no guilt or anything for misleading her friends, just an easy deception.
On Krakoa, she had thought she might connect to Kwannon with their kind of similar experiences and traumas related to identity, so when she found out that Kwannon was dating John, it disappointed her.
I think she really wants people to like her, she craves attention because of the trauma she experienced being neglected by Scott. But she also doesn't know how to go about it in a good way, and she doesn't necessarily want to leave behind this new path she's carved for herself. I think exploring that would be a really good next big arc for her, figuring out where she goes from here and how she maintains her identity while also trying to heal and get what she really needs emotionally.
I realized some of these are more like theories and meta than headcanons but... frankly I'm kind of terrible at coming up with random headcanons lmao. And I love theories and meta.
Send me a character or a ship and I'll share 5 headcanons!

“The Labors of Magik Goes Out with a Whimper”
Body of a letter-to-the-editor I emailed to Marvel after reading New Mutants #28.  Spoilers for that issue.

The promotional material before New Mutants #25 led us to believe "The Labors of Magik" would be a war between Illyana and Madelyne for the throne of Limbo.  How I wish that had been the case.   Writer Vita Ayala had some great ideas:
An Illyana-centric story:  Great idea!
Illyana, Rahne, and Dani team up:  Great idea!  (A Magik/Wolfsbane team-up would also be fun, but I have to accept the fact that Marvel does not now have, never has, or ever will have any interest in doing that.  But I can still lodge the complaint [again].)
Magik v. the Golbin Queen for the Throne of Limbo:  Great idea!
The Labors of Magik:  Where great idea went to die.  And #28 was the story's underwhelming conclusion.   We began #28 by learning a future/alternate version of Illyana was S'Ym's benefactor.  I suspected that from the start.  Although the silhouette in #25 was drawn to look like Belasco, S'Ym's ally had two arms whereas Belasco has one.  Vita managed to muddy the water by having Belasco generate a false energy arm in #27 (something he has never done in any other comic appearance and certainly not in the Magik limited series written by Chris Claremont), and I briefly hoped for something more creative than another version of Illyana, but alas, that was not to be.
Other than expressing their concerns about Illyana turning Limbo over to the Goblin Queen, Dani and Rahne have almost nothing to do in "The Labors of Magik."  There's hardly any chemistry between these three young women even though they have known each other, lived together, and fought side-by-side for roughly a decade.  (I'm assuming that the O. G. New Mutants are all in their mid-twenties during the Krakoa era.)  It could have been any two characters.  It could have been Storm and Wolverine.   It could have been Captain America and Hulk.  It could have been Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.  Or just Illyana and her brother for all four issues.  Absolutely anyone Marvel has the publishing rights for given the lack of chemistry.  Dani and Rahne were completely unnecessary to the story.  Why were they there?
After Queen Illyana is, well, dispatched just when she gets interesting, Regular Illyana gets her magical power back, and a text page explains what has happened to her.  These feel like afterthoughts, last minute changes to a story designed to either write Illyana out of existence or regress her to an unpowered child (again).  I have a very easy time envisioning someone from Disney HQ going to Marvel's editorial offices to lay down the law in person:  "Magik is a major character!  She's all over the comics lines except for the Star Wars Line, she's in the video games, and she was the breakout star of a movie that otherwise tanked.   We're already having discussions about casting her for the MCU; I've had three calls from Taylor-Joy this week.  You will NOT get rid of her, Ayala!  If you do, we will get rid of you!  And the next very next New Mutants writer brings Magik back as soon as possible and we forget this ever happened!  Capiche!?"   I do not doubt that the writer and editors will completely deny anything like that this happened, but the fact that a knucklehead like me could envision that shows my lack of trust in the writer in this case.
We end on a late-night heart-to-heart between Illyana and her brother in which Illyana explains she was tired of being angry.  Oh, please.   Illyana was never just angry.  3/5 of her soul had been consecrated to evil via the creation of the bloodstones, and the demonic side of being expressed itself through her being a bad attitude.  That's something you can't wish away.  Or shouldn't be able to.  And Illyana's motivation that she was tired of being angry was weak, especially given that everybody she knows is used to it by now.  Why the rush to change?  I couldn't see a pressing reason for it.
The flashback reveals that child Illyana defied Belasco because of a book created a time-traveling demon she had once shown kindness.  Excuse me? The little sister of Colossus, who was pretty much being raised by the X-Men and who wanted to be a superhero like her big brother, was going to give up all hope and knuckle under to Belasco if not for the book this demon had somehow caused to write?  Seriously?
(BTW, what happened to Squidge?  He was a little critter who came and went on the first pages of Magik #3.  I had assumed/hoped if we saw more of Illyana's time as Belasco's apprentice, we would see more of Squidge.   Guess not.)
And to top it all off, the introductory text said one of Illyana's duties was being the leader of the New Mutants.  SAY WHAT!?  For four decades, I thought DANI was and is the leader of the New Mutants.  No wonder Magik was burning out!  This begs the question, could the whole mess have been avoided if 'Yana had just given Dani her old job back?  Or maybe Illyana, Dani, and Rahne could have taken time off and gone on vacation?  That would have been more fun than "Labors of Magik" turned out to be...unless Vita wrote that, too...then...well...
We're left with the Goblin Queen on the throne of Limbo, and I suppose that's got some story potential in it.  There's also the mystery of where Illyana's stepping disks now take people.  And what her place in the mystical world is now that she's no longer the sorceress supreme of Limbo.  Ok.  But that potential came at the cost of changing Illyana in fundamental ways.  Magik's story was always more than just an allegory for child abuse.  Being angry and being the queen of Limbo were central to her character for 40 years.  Remove those things and we're left with...what?  I can't relate to the character who was having a heart-to-heart with her older brother in #28.  I don't know how to relate to her, and I'm not sure I want to.  The "old Magik" had an edge.  Vita's "New Magik" has the cutting edge of a whiffle ball.  To be blunt:  A happy Magik is boring Magik.
I can't see any reason for the changes to Magik's character, or who beyond Vita Ayala could have possibly wanted them.  "Because no one demanded it, we did it anyway because...well, just because!  Vita's tired of writing 'Yana in a bad mood all the time.  What do you care?   You're going to buy the BLEEP book anyway, so BLEEP you!"  Sadly, I did buy the BLEEP book, and I will probably buy the BLEEP trade paperback, but sales receipts do not indicate quality.
So much potential, and all to nothing.  What a waste.
Better luck next time?

Really sad to see, I loved the first semester and it looked like it had so much potential to be a regular, consistently good book

Given how long it's been since there was even a peep of a follow-up, I'm starting to wonder if it was stealth canceled. The fact that Zoey is involved in a team book suggests that may be the case as well.

Disappointed again... it seems Skottie has no idea of how to handle the magic characters around Stephen (Jericho, Zelma, etc.) nor the Sanctum. It's all so random and disrespectful to the Strange lore and I'm sad because this series used to be good and I was very eager to get more. Marvel authors really need to talk with each other before throwing plots a la "random bullshit go!"
@kat-of-nine-tales said:
Hopefully it is cancelled and my girls Zoey and Dessy can show up somewhere else, like Midnight Suns.
What it pisses me off the most is the wasted potential about the relationships between teachers and students, like Illyana and Dessy (she’s S'ym’s daughter ffs!), Jericho and Zoe, Gus and Loki (Gus never ever having his character explored is also such a wasted potential) etc etc etc. Instead, the book went downhill with nothing to add to their relationships except a terrible portrayal.
The book wasn’t really cancelled since it’s coming back on summer but I do hope it’s just a final saga with Emily going full crazy and the Academy shutting down. Sorry, the characters deserve better, and it does warm my heart to see Zoe in the current canon instead. Free them please!!
And yes, I agree that Skottie butchered v4′s lore, first by using Mr. Misery in a way that portrays Stephen as a villain (as if it was his fault for manifesting depression, ok), then making Emily sympathize with Imperator, you know, the guy who burned sorcerers alive, yeah. And the latter for nothing cause Emily is now evil (?)
The characters are really amazing and interesting but the lack of respect is just... I KNOOOOW it’s a book for teenagers but still?? I can read IDW’s Marvel all day and it doesn’t make me roll my eyes in disappointment.

Yeah. I'm tired of Waldron, too. I really hope for the third film that Ben pulls rank and demands a different writer, cause let's face it; Waldron's an idiot.
Amen, Vishanti. And speaking of which... have you folks watched the HISHE DSITMOM video? It's out and it’s already better than the movie itself x] it’s on youtube btw!

Finally, we get to slow down and see Ororo rejoicing in her powers as she flies over Australia. Down below, Maddie is regaining her own agency in a nice parallel as she explores the Reavers' sophisticated computers. She's getting the hang of it and is proud to finally have a way to contribute to the X-Men, although tragically it comes much to late to heal the X-Men-related rift between her and Scott. Using the computers, she guides the X-Men through a sparring session, which goes very well. The team has finally learned to trust each other, and with Ororo back, they finally have a good leader (no offense Logan, but that is not your strong suit). One X-Man didn't show up though- Longshot's psychometry powers are drawing him to the Reavers' vault of stolen money and treasure. Some of the stolen objects have absorbed the psychic energy of their own violent history and have manifested as lonely spirits, which overwhelm Longshot and render him comatose. While he sleeps off the mental overload, Ororo cleans their base of operations, which is under a ghost town, and Anna brings a picnic basket of food to Gateway. It's a nice beat for her; other than maybe Logan, she's the loneliest X-Man, and unlike him, she's not content to wallow in loneliness, so it makes sense that she'd reach out. Longshot wakes up and tells everyone how much residual tragedy the Reavers left in their wake, and they decide to fix as much as they can by returning all of the treasure. After Longshot and Betsy have read and sorted every piece of loot, Gateway sends the X-Men all around the world returning the items in secret. Ororo's errands bring her to New York, where she sees the New Mutants miserable in a snowstorm mourning their mentors who abandoned them. Ororo gives their spirits a little boost by clearing up the weather enough for them to keep caroling. When the deliveries are finally done, the X-Men realize that, by coincidence or fate, they delivered all that stuff on Christmas Eve. As everyone relaxes and enjoys the good feeling, Anna takes some cake and a wooden recorder to Gateway as a Christmas present. He still doesn't say anything, but he motions for her to sit with him and plays her a song. This was my favorite issue in a while, and one of the sweetest ones. It was cool to see Longshot center stage in a dramatic role, and he was probably the one who got the most catharsis out of helping lost spirits. And the whole team got a reminder that no matter how dark their world has become, they don't have to stay edgy; they can spread joy just as well as justice. And Anna and Gateway is such a sweet friendship. This is the kind of one-off story Claremont was writing at his peek, and even though he's gotten a little too excited about plots and X-mythology lately, he can still write some really lovely character moments and a totally sappy Christmas story.
We open with a short scene of Illyana, dressed in fancy clothes and in a trance, being prepared to be eaten by a mysterious villain. Elsewhere and else when, Peter is letting off some steam by smashing Australian rocks. He's still unable to revert to human form, and he doesn't realize just how hot his steel skin gets in the sun until he picks up his sketchbook and it catches fire. He starts sobbing, until Ororo comes to cool him down literally and emotionally. He tells her how worried about his sister he's been, and how he can't concentrate enough to control his strength. Ororo doesn't think it's a good idea for him to break their cover with a visit, but the choice is taken out of her hands when Gateway offers Peter a portal. It turns out he sensed Illyana casting a necromancy spell from Limbo, trying to bring Peter to life, so he sends Peter there. He finds her battling S'ym for control of Limbo. Between the T/O virus from Magus and the army of rebel demons and enslaved Right members Illyana sent him, S'ym is approaching Illyana in power, and seeks to dethrone her. Peter attacks him, impervious to both his T/O and magic powers, but Illyana calls him back; this isn't why she brought him here. Earlier today, she was reading some Russian literature when some of the characters appeared in real life and kidnapped her to bring her before Baba Yaga, the Russian witch that eats kids. Illyana escaped, but Baba Yaga has cut off the mansion from magic, so she needed Peter to go save her team. He does so, beating up evil witch minions and destroying things left and right. To reach the kids, he has to use all his will to return to human form and squeeze through a gap, before reverting back to destroy Baba Yaga, whose weakness is metal. Illyana cures her friends of the precooking spells on them, and Peter compliments her on a good plan well executed. She says she doesn't deserve that, because she's evil and she only did this because she wanted to, and he tells her that's all good people ever do. She thanks him and releases him as Gateway takes him back. She thinks about resurrecting him again, but thinks about what he said and decides not to, knowing such a spell could corrupt her into Darkchilde forever. She goes back to the mansion, and S'ym monologues evilly about how Baba Yaga was one of his minions, sent to either kill or corrupt Illyana. It didn't work, but he'll only need to succeed once to take over Limbo. I liked this issue. It made me realize something; Ororo, in her attempt to become the leader and hero mutantkind needs, has placed herself above human emotion. She still loves and cares as deeply as ever, but it's a little aloof and detached, like a guardian angel rather than a mother. And of course, Logan has always separated himself from his emotions. But Peter refuses to feel any less deeply and humanly, despite being cut off from his human form. If the X-Men followed his lead- if they didn't cut themselves off from the New Mutants and X-Factor- Inferno would have been prevented. But of course, they don't know what's coming, and trying to live outside of the world has made them all the more blind to it.

...and that gave her the ability to make magical Halloween masks...what?
Couldn't...she have just gotten like, enchanted halloween masks? Why did the finger of S'ym have to play a part into this, its so random!
