Heroics
In Justice League: Unlimited there is an episode that will always be my favorite: Patriot Act. Implicitly Pretentious on YouTube has a great video on it. Check him out for this and other DC analysis videos.
The reason I love this episode is that is shows what it means to be a hero. A few c-list heroes with no powers and Green Arrow get called in to sun for Superman in a parade celebrating heroes. There are police and firemen and these c-listers.
A super-powered general comes in and starts recking shop, saying how he wants to fight Superman to show that no one can challenge American power. Several people almost die due to his actions and other heroes, more c and b listers with no powers, are called in quickly but are defeated until there's only the general and Shining Knight. SH gets beat but the civilians they saved surround him.
These heroes aren't popular, a lot of them don't have powers, they use tech or some type of mythical artifact. The only thing that separates them from the policeman and the firemen are their costumes, their gear, and their origins. And throughout the episode of highlights different aspects of heroism. Vigilante gives some kids the job of rounding up people and getting them away from the area. Shining Knight saves a man from some ruble, and he says if there was a car in front of him. It shows that the heroes just help people.
Shining Knight gets beat very badly by the general, but even when he's bruised and broken and very much going to die, he still stands up and tries to help. When Green Arrow and Speedy run out of arrows, they still charge him with their bows. When S.T.R.P.E’s chest is exposed, he's still fights.
"Anyone can wear the mask." Miles Morales says in Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. People usually take it as be a superhero but the way I see it is that to be a hero is to show humanity, to show the kindness in all people.
Not everyone is gonna be able to save a city by themselves or lift buildings, in My Hero Academia only the kids with the best powers can get into UA. In the beginning Toshinori says Midoriya could be a police officer since he's quirkless.
And I'd like to see how the DCAU would interact with this. Because not everyone can be a superhero, anyone can be a hero. Its in the small acts of kindness, in the things that won't matter or be written down in a history book of epics, but that will make someone's day and make them feel something good when they think back on it.
I haven't read the manga and the last I watched was around the end of Raid arc. In MHA, being a hero is a popularity contest about merch sales, photoshoots, whether a person uses their quirk with a liscene. It's a marketable brand of heroism that sells toys, funds hero schools and draws heroes into big cities to get good media coverage.
Midoriya and Toshinori are examples of doing good for the sake of doing good. The heroes in Patrol Act show that do be a hero is to be kind, to share the bit of humanity inside all of us.

Seven Soldiers of Victory
Shining Knights gather. Will Camelot fall again? Not if the Seven Soldiers of Victory have anything to say about it.
Sir Justin, Shining Knight
Sir Ystin, Shining Knight, Sir Ystina
Gimmix, Jacqueline Pemberton
Green Arrow, Connor Hawke
Crimson Avenger, Jill Carlyle
S.T.A.R. Labs' Guardian, Michael
Stripe, Mike Dugan
Sir Justin and Sir Ystin belong to two different Camelots, but they both see familiar patterns playing out. Mike Dugan has finally graduated to hero status and uses his stepsister's Cosmic Coverter Belt, styling himself as simply...Stripe. Connor Hawke continues the Green Arrow legacy by following in his father's footsteps. Gimmix finds purpose rolling with her uncle's old crew. Guardian, a glorified security guard, takes his tech and skillset to the big leagues and proves himself as worthy as any other Guardian to weild the shield. Crimson Avenger fights along the other Soldiers of Victory, but stands ready to avenge them if they fall.

Patriot Act (The Seven Soldiers of Victory: Together again for the first time)
[All images are owned by DC Comics and WarnerMedia. I hope I’m too small-fry to sue...]
One of the great things about Justice League Unlimited is they draw from pretty much the entire DC lineup and can have entire episodes where you barely see any of the “founding members”, such as the episode that featured Booster Gold.
However, this episode stars not one, but seven such heroes, and they teamed up in the comics way back in the Golden Age as the Seven Soldiers of Victory!
Tumblr media
(Thanks to DC Comics)
From left to right, we have Green Arrow and his sidekick Speedy, Crimson Avenger, Shining Knight, Vigilante, the Star-Spangled Kid and his sidekick Stripesy (yes, Stripesy was an adult sidekick to a teen)
In the comics Star Spangled Kid was killed in action, with Stripesy’s stepdaughter picking up the mantle and calling herself Stargirl, while Stripesy built himself powered armor and renamed himself S.T.R.I.P.E.
[NOTE: After Crisis, the Golden Age Green Arrow and Speedy didn’t exist in DC’s main continuity, so Vigilante’s and Crimson Avenger’s sidekicks were written in to fill in the gaps for the comics, but we’re not worried about that for the purposes of this review]
Obviously JLU tinkered with continuity to move these WW2 heroes to the modern age (but kept Stargirl and S.T.R.I.P.E.) But enough backstory (I could go on, but I’ve given pretty much what you need to know) and on to the main story!
If you would like to watch the episode, it’s available on KissCartoon.
PREVIOUSLY ON...
This being JLU, a number of stories tie together in an extended storyline, so a bit of background...
Thanks to an alternate dimension’s version of the Justice League (that pretty much ruled their Earth) meddling in the prime universe, the government has a great deal of mistrust over the League. An organization known as Cadmus, headed by Amanda Waller and General Wade Eiling, was formed to prepare in case the League goes rogue. However, they got in bed with Lex Luthor, and that never ends well. Cadmus was investigated, with Waller and Eiling being quietly reassigned.
And now, on with our story...that starts with a flashback
Tumblr media
We open in a castle in Nazi Germany where the Germans are attempting their version of Captain America (yes, I know Cap is a Marvel property, but when the result in the comics is a super soldier named Captain Nazi...), but before the experiment can proceed...
Tumblr media
...a hero known as Spy Smasher (yes, he was a real hero in the comics and even got his own movie serial) crashes the party. The resulting fight destroys the lab in an explosion, presumably killing the Germans (though this being Kids’ TV we don’t actually see anyone die) while Spy Smasher gets away with the syringe of Super Soldier serum.
Tumblr media
Cut to the present, where Gen. Eiling (voiced by J. Jonah Jameson himself, J.K. Simmons) is looking over the report of Spy Smasher’s operation as we cue the opening credits.
Tumblr media
We come back from the credits to see Waller and Eiling having dinner. Eiling is bitching about his new assignment, and the fact that he still sees the Justice League as a threat. Waller attempts to talk him down, but he’s too busy listening to himself talk.
Tumblr media
Waller gives Eiling one final warning to not go down this path before calling it a night.
Tumblr media
On the Watchtower (the League’s orbital HQ), Mr. Terrific calls Green Arrow, S.T.R.I.P.E., Stargirl, Shining Knight, and Vigilante (voiced by Nathan Fillian) to the bridge. the rest of the League is occupied elsewhere and he has an important mission for them, filling in for Superman in Metropolis...
Tumblr media
...on parade duty.
The five (wait, I thought I said Seven Soldiers?) play up to the crowd, though the crowd isn’t exactly warming to them (three guesses who the people of Metropolis wanted)
Meanwhile, Gen. Eiling has returned to Cadmus to “collect something” he “left behind”. That doesn’t sound ominous at all. When he reaches the bio-vault one of the scientists stops him and starts asking the right questions about Eiling’s business when he’s not supposed to be affiliated with Cadmus any more.
Tumblr media
Time for Plan B, I guess. The scientist sees Eiling’s point and allows him in. When the scientist realizes Eiling’s going for the Captain Nazi formula, he sounds the alarm, so Eiling injects the serum into himself and escapes as we go to commercial.
Tumblr media
I’d say he looks less like Captain America and more like the Hulk.
We come back to see Vigilante playing to the crowd like a ringmaster, hyping up Stargirl and Shining Knight [FUN FACT: Sir Justin, the Shining Knight, was originally part of King Arthur’s court before being frozen in ice until he was revived in World War II (though in this case it was obviously modern times)]...
youtube
(Thanks to Lance Simmons)
The four boys “deputized” by Vigilante are another Golden Age callback, the Newsboy Legion (a pint-sized group of hooligans who assisted the hero known as the Guardian)
Tumblr media
(Thanks to Amazon)
Also, a quick note about the Seven Soldiers (yes, I know there are currently five battling Eiling. Wait for it): NONE OF THEM HAVE ACTUAL POWERS!
They are so screwed.
Tumblr media
Anyway, back to the episode. Vigilante finds a convenient ramp to jump his motorcycle and catches the boy. He then sends the Newsboy Legion back to work on crowd control (I will say they’re more enthusiastic than Booster Gold was about it) Meanwhile Eiling continues to use S.T.R.I.P.E. as a punching bag...
Tumblr media
...until Stargirl intervenes. Eiling has no issues changing dance partners. Once Vigilante makes sure the Newsboy Legion is clear...
Tumblr media
...he sacrifices his bike in an attempt to take down Eiling. Unfortunately, it doesn’t even slow him down. (I will give all of the Seven (OK, Five) Soldiers credit: they know they don’t stand a chance against Eiling, but keep his attention away from the bystanders) Speaking of, Stargirl once again snags Eiling with her Cosmic Staff in an attempt to fly him away from Metropolis, but Eiling says he has no issues with “acceptable losses” among civilians...
Tumblr media
...or hitting a girl (though in his defense (not that I’m defending him) she did swing first) Fortunately for Stargirl...
Tumblr media
...Shining Knight asks to cut in on this dance.
Tumblr media
Yeah, he fares about as well. Fortunately, Green Arrow and Vigilante arrive to distract Eiling.
Tumblr media
...yep.
Mr. Terrific calls that he’s found some backup. Eiling’s in trouble as he now has to deal with...
Tumblr media
...the Crimson Avenger and Speedy (completing the team) I’m sure Eiling’s quaking.
Avenger hits Eiling with his gas gun, but one clap from Eiling blows away that noise (and the Crimson Avenger) GA and Speedy hit Eiling with their entire quivers, leaving their Last Resorts: their Quantum arrows. They fire, and an explosion engulfs Eiling...
youtube
(Thanks to Man of Tomorrow)
Damn, not only do the Seven Soldiers have some serious stones standing up to Eiling, but so does the crowd!
With Eiling running off, the fight is over except for the recovery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, that includes three of the Seven Soldiers needing hospital stays.
Tumblr media
The old woman who talked down Eiling comes over to Shining Knight and the pair thank each other for what they both did that day, making for a bittersweet feel-good ending for the episode.
Meanwhile, the Newsboy Legion is role-playing their newest heroes, Shining Knight and Vigilante, as the credits roll.

DC's Stargirl 3.08 "Chapter Eight: Infinity Inc. Part Two" has aired on the CW and I'm here to talk about it
Look at me, posting on release day for the first time since I believe the start of the season. Wild.
"Luckily you're with the one person who knows how to escape this place." Sure Jan. Sure.
I have a sneaking suspension that this episode is going to be one of those episodes where I do a lot of googling random names to see if they're anybody who actually exists in DC or was maybe a writer/artist for some JSA comics back in the day. Such as, these kids being shown as the alarm goes off. Tao Jones, Penny Dreadful, and Carcharo. Penny Dreadful is a character I've heard of before, but not the other two, though all three are real characters that are part of a group called Helix, which also included Mr Bones our BBEG.
Shadow Todd looks fucking awesome. But Jennie, sweetie. Maybe stop touching him? Because it keeps causing big explosions.
Maybe I'm the weird one because my grandparents had a rotary phone, so I know how to use one. But I feel like it's weird that Courtney doesn't. Like, it's not hard or weird to use.
Fuck you, Nurse Love. Your torture bullshit isn't how you help anyway, fuck that noise. Unrelated, but she knows Courtney is Stargirl. Which, yeah, obviously. But does that not raise alarm bells to Courtney? Or did she already know they know and I forgot about it? Also unrelated, but Courtney called Pat Dad!
Shadowland diner visions! The last time this happened, we saw the Zaricks again. Now, we see the Gambler again. And Pat's seeing his dad? Pat daddy issues reveal??
Odd they didn't take Jennie's ring. Maybe they can't.
Oh, I see, Pat's parents had him to fix their marriage. Terrible reason to have a kid. Some people aren't meant to be parents. And now it's the death of Shade's mom? Or sister maybe?
Now, why is Mr Bones watching the JSA? What's the point? What does he think they're gonna do, or prevent him from doing?
So, it was Shade's sister. And he regrets never saying goodbye to her.
Okay Bones, how do you know that if you can't get Todd's powers under control, it'll be the end of the world or whatever? That's a bold claim. I'm gonna need a second opinion. And of course, Courtney is like "the answer is the power of love" and it's probably gonna be true, but you know what? That's okay. Sometimes we want the tropes to be true.
Do I think shadowlands!Barbara and Pat's dad are telling the truth about Pat being a horrible father and whatever? No. But having been watching this show for two and a half seasons, yeah Pat could probably give Mike some more attention and work on meeting Mike at his level. But Pat's genuinely a good father. One of the few good fathers we see on T.V. Lord knows we don't get many. So don't listen to these fuckers Pat.
This psychic meeting between Jennie and Todd is so beautiful. I'm kind of surprised that the darkness leaving the ring isn't what they decided would give Todd his powers. But hey, Todd got everything under control! The power of love!! And also Pat and Shade are alive!!
Wait, so Helix isn't who's spying on everyone? Then who the fuck is? Please tell me it really was Dragon King this whole time, that'd be so fucking funny. I don't remember ever hearing about getting a second villain. And have these two episodes been called Infinity Inc because Helix is going to form Infinity Inc? Who are historically their enemies?? This mid-season has fully turned everything upside down.
And now a name drop of both the original and the second Sandman, Wesley Dodds and Sanderson "Sandy" Hawkins. Sandy for season four? Or maybe even later this season? We're probably going to see Jennie and Todd again later this season anyway.
Growth for Shade. I love it. I love seeing villains getting to grow and become okay people.
Now that this little side adventure is over, it's time to get back to the actual plot of the show. Let me know your guesses as to who the person spying on them really is. Right now I don't really have many guesses. I might spend some time this next week doing some research into JSA comic villains and see if there's anything that rings any bells. The promo for the next episodes looks pretty cool. I'm very into a confrontation between the JSA and the Mahkent family. And I do think that Cameron deserves to know the truth. It'll be great to see that train wreck. See that next week in DC's Stargirl 3.09 "Chapter Nine: The Monsters"
