S1E01: Remembrance
Four years ago today, I saw the first episode of this new tv show which would become my new obsession and utterly change my life.
To celebrate, I thought we could take some time this week to remember some of the things we enjoyed about this episode, or that stood out to us.
I'll get us started with one of the things I truly loved about Ep 1x01:
Tumblr media
Dahj! Just... Dahj!
We only got her for one episode, and she was suffering for most of it, but I latched onto her character straight away and real hard.
I love that even with her very limited screen time, I still got the feeling she was a distinct character from Soji. Maybe a little looser, more flowing... (And yes, this perception is reinforced by the different hairstyles, which is another detail I adore!)
Tumblr media
(Look at these two! You can tell who's who at a glance from the body language, even before you look at the hair!)
Her little student apartment in Boston with it's Tragic Abundance Of Vanilla deserves to have a whole bunch of fics set in it! And even though it's just a cover story, I love her excitement at getting into the Daystrom! Just imagine the thrill, angst, and chaos if she had gone there and ended up working with Agnes - and the two of them discovering the truth about her that way.
Also, I love that Dahj is immediately adopted by Picards entire household, from the Romulan housekeepers/bodyguards...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... to the Number One Goodest Boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(No wonder the mom AI told Soji that Dahj was thinking about getting a puppy. It may have been a lie in the moment but clearly fit Dahj's character well enough to be believable.)
And of course there's so, so much more to love about her. Dahj's journey of self-dscovery, however chaotic and short it ended up being, was a great jumping-off point for the series, and by the end of episode 1, I was hooked!
Tumblr media
I still have so many fond feelings for Dahj and I really hope I'll find the time and brain space to write about her some time.
How about you? What are some things you remember fondly from this episode?

Been rewatching some old interviews (https://youtu.be/1rXu6FEVfPo) and there is something Aiden said that left me with a lot to think about. Here he talks about how Five's trauma is starting to wear him down even though there are certain parts of him that are insane and sadistic. I found the choice of words very strange because while Five is without doubt partly insane, I wouldn't call him sadistic. (1/2)
The only time he come close was during the slaughter of the commission's head which was a very personal and vindictive deal. Five is efficient, not messy. Furthermore, wouldn't Five being insane and vindictive in regards to the commission be the perfect sum of his life experiences rather than inherit? That is the result of his trauma instead of something to be set apart. (2/3) I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Aiden's words btw, he always has great insight and opinions to share, I'm just not very sure about what he was trying to say in that specific instance and don't really agree with him there, and was wondering how others felt. (3/3) //I wanted to apologize for any potential repeated ask and the 3 part division, my internet went insane for a bit there so I'm not sure if it sent my OG draft too alongside the rest and I wanted to be sure the length didn't get in the way by creating ulterior problems.
Hey Anon! I did get ALL of your messages in a very confusing order, but it's all good, all of it came through, don't worry about it.
As for the kiddo's words...I think what he was trying to say and did not quite get the wording right is that part of Five has always been and always will be an asshole, it's not that he started out as a perfect angel and then the trauma of his entire life turned him into a dickhead. There's a a part of him that is just not good, and if it is not actively pushed down, he will become someone he doesn't want to be. We see it in the S1E01 flashback when he is smiling while toying with the bank robber. We see it when he sends off the Handler with a grenade and a smile. We see it when he fucks Diego over in S2E01, grinning, and with no remorse about getting him thrown into a padded cell. There's a certain enjoyment to be seen when he gets one over Lila in their first fight. I don't think that Five is truly sadistic, but he could easily be if he didn't stop himself most of the time. Like, I do think there's something, most obviously seen in the Commission Board Massacre (and then never spoken of again, thanks TUA writers), that implies that he could enjoy this, enjoy the pain of others, despite what he says about himself, and it's a constant tightrope walk to not lose himself and the few principles he has left.
So, I think that that's what he meant, but maybe the words 'insane and sadistic' are not the best ones to really get the points across. There's also the possibility that he is talking about a more comic!Five-inspired characterisation, that guy is more in that ballpark. So yeah, those are my thoughts, that I think I get what he meant, it just could have been better formulated.

Lewis Fic Recs: Are You For Me? (S1E01)
Stories set pre-Lewis canon or during S1E01: Reputation (pilot). As usual, this list is far from exhaustive, so please feel free to add more fics to it!
Small World by prosfan
1,299 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Lewis and Hathaway meet many years earlier, only for history to repeat itself 26 years later. Young James is adorably irritated to be in the hospital, and his shy awe watching Sergeant Lewis is very sweet.
Wanted: Sergeant by Hekate1308
1,361 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply A thoughtful look at Robbie Lewis, newly made DI, in the years between shows as he struggles to find a sergeant he truly fits with, after becoming accustomed to Morse's eccentricities for so long. And then Val is killed, and it hardly matters anymore. At least, not until his return to Oxford years later.
The Future of Modern Policing by richmahogany
11,834 Words, Gen, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply A collection of stories following Hathaway's earliest days in the force, as a DC and later as a new DS, before Lewis' return to Oxford. It adds some interesting details to James' background, including having him get kicked out of another station for being 'difficult', as well as his trouble fitting in with the others at Oxford, and offers some wonderful early interactions between him and Laura.
Working With Dinosaurs by athersgeo
1,942 Words, Gen, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply An annoyed Sergeant Hathaway drives to the airport and wonders why Innocent had sent him, of all peopleand gradually learns there's more than meets the eye to DI Lewis. An nuanced take on Lewis and Hathaway's introduction, with the possibility that Innocent had ulterior motives in putting them together.
Every Little Thing by LyricaXXX
2,815 Words, pre-James/Robbie, Rated T, No Archive Warnings Apply James finds himself drawn to the summer warmth of DI Lewis in the middle of the first investigation together, when a sudden, simple question from the man sends James' mind into turmoil. This story is rich in sensory detail, and balances out James' inner angsting with a quietly hopeful ending.
The Steep and Thorny Way by emungere
809 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Part 1 of a longer series. A fascinating look at James' conversation with Innocent at the end of the episode, how she's slowly convinced to keep Lewis in active duty and to give him first refusal to have James as his bagman. A quietly powerful recognition of "are you for me?"
Coda: Reputation by dbw
907 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply The stories had not prepared James for the enigma that was DI Lewis, or for how much his life would change at the end of the three days of their first case—or for the growing warmth in his chest at the thought of working together.
Lessons and Limitations by donutsweeper
208 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply Robbie pov. After the pilot episode, Robbie muses on his limitations, Innocent's desire to punt him into a teaching position, and his luck at getting as brilliant a sergeant as James Hathaway. A slightly melancholy combination of insecurity, practicality, and self-knowledge.
Truth and Clarity (The Deep Dark Ocean Remix) by elrhiarhodan
1,132 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply James pov. A remix of Lessons and Limitations. While others had always told stories of Morse's great intelligence, James had always recognized the importance that Lewis had played in solving cases. It's a powerful expression of James' eagerness to work with DI Lewis, and his recognition that brilliance need not come from academic achievement.
Six Days by ComplicatedLight
100 Words, James & Robbie, Rated G, No Archive Warnings Apply James muses on the nature of obedience, and finds himself a changed man after working his first case with DI Lewis. An incredibly powerful 100-word drabble that gets right to the essence of James' devotion to Robbie.

46 Great Things in Strange New Worlds (S1E01)
I decided to write down all the things I loved from each episode of Strange New World's first season.
Strange New Worlds | Children of the Comet | Ghosts of Illyria Part 1 & Part 2 | Memento Mori | Spock Amok | Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach | Serene Squall | The Elysian Kingdom | All Those Who Wander | A Quality of Mercy
Pilot episode things to love include:
Seeing first contact with the Federation from the POV of an alien species with Una's log overlaying the opening
Star Trek tradition of character being in love with really old American television/movies continues, this time with The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Pike's pancakes look divine - and the gentle way he spatulas them onto the plate! This is a person who is skilled and takes great care with delicate things.
I oddly love Pike referring to Batel as "Captain Batel" during breakfast and have this headcanon that he does so while she's in uniform to kind of draw the line between the personal and professional relationship they have
But also like shame on her for saying the pancakes were good BUT STILL LEAVING MOST OF IT ON HER PLATE
Calling the communicator a phone is weird - but I appreciate the effort they are making to bridge the way life imitated art and gave us cell phones before warp drives
Loving the way they are showing the relationship between Batel and Pike here, the friend/coworkers with benefits, call me when you get back in town but with no expectations thing - it feels realistic given their careers
Good god I love the music in this series please give me a soundtrack
What an absolutely gorgeous theme song and title sequence. It feels very Lower Decks visually, but definitely pays homage to the TOS sequence.
Say what you want, but I love seeing playful Vulcans. Tuvok had some excellent lines on Voyager, but seeing T'Pring and Spock dance around the engagement question is delightful.
"I'm going to have to ask you two to do that somewhere else." 😂😂😂
"Matrimony and duty. The two will complement each other." "I remain skeptical." As you should, girl, as you should
Oo, I do like the communicator plugging into a video display though. Nice blend of the 60s tech with modern tech.
Pike reviewing La'an's file and the Gorn report on the way to the Enterprise. Weird thing to like, I know, but this comes up later in my list.
I love that Enterprise is a learning ship and the cadets rotate through the departments
Pike has a goddamn fireplace in his quarters. He has a kitchen.
I love Pike's conversation with Spock on the way to Kiley 279, questioning how the knowledge of his accident will live in him and direct his actions in the years leading up to it - and the season finale answers that question which makes for a nice narrative circle shaped thing
Bridge troubleshooting sessions are the best
I love Nurse Chapel - she is the manic pixie dream girl of the show while still being extremely competent - and I love her introductory exchange with La'an and how Pike is just sitting back and watching them circle each other
"Well there's surviving and then there's living." I like that he left the decision to take the sedative up to La'an (and now knowing her backstory it makes sense but the first time I saw this episode I was like goddamn girl)
Obligatory "history of the United States" reference
Also loving the rivalry between Spock and La'an down on the planet… new coworkers are hard
Delta Scorpii Seven
"Always when I'm in the captain's chair" - This whole exchange is when I knew Ortegas was gonna be one of my favs
I love that Uhura is the one who is able to settle the rabbit - bonding through sports is the fastest way to get your alien captive to relax
The flirtatious lady in the elevator who sees Spock morphing while Pike pretends he has no idea what she's freaking out about - this man is a complete awkward dork around women how the hell did he get Batel into bed 😂(
"Somehow I figured you might" 😍 I don't ship them I don't ship them
"Can you not jinx it?" More of Una and Spock, please, I beg of you
Also the way Pike is holding her 😍 GODDAMMIT I DO NOT SHIP THEM
Spock screaming as his genome reverted was intense and I like it because it means my girl La'an is a fucking BEAST because she went through all of that without a sound on the ship which is horrifying
Shades of Janeway and the Caretaker's array in Pike's decision to interfere despite General Order 1 because without their original unintended interference there would be no secondary interference necessary - it's a parallel I am comfortable with
La'an calling Spock "the science officer" 😂
What a power move bringing Enterprise into lower orbit and I love the air raid sirens on Kiley that go off as it descends
"The true cost of a civil war is abstract"
"Right up until the very end life is to be worn gloriously"
Ok, ok, we get it, this is the bad place 🙃
The Kiley montage is weird like what is even happening in it are they worshiping the Enterprise at the end there with their paper doll cutout of it?? Aliens.
Renaming General Order One the Prime Directive
I like Admiral April - he is a solid dude
Pike knowing exactly what La'an is about at the end of the episode is the best. He's read her file, he knows all of this already, but he's letting her come to him and tell him in her own words and that's great.
"Other people are challenging for me." me too girl me too
Ugh this musiiiiiic 🥰
I just like watching this crew doing their jobs. The set is pretty, the people are pretty, the dialogue is crisp.
We are all Uhura saying "Cool!" on the bridge
Pike's almost knee-high boots
Ending credit music!

I wanted you to know that I haven't stopped thinking about From A Drop of Water since I found and read it last week. It is a masterpiece. I've also devoured your Great Heart essay and the first four episodes of Better Story. Thank you for writing and making them. I was a fan on the outskirts when everything went down, and context is everything.
Thanks to all that, my brain sent me a dream last night of a slightly reworked version of the final confrontation in FADOW... the dream had it occurring at the Roland Kerr college of S1E01. Hope you don't mind but um, here's what the dream had... (oh btw, all the dream said of the earlier parts of the series was the birth of baby Watson, followed by Mary disappearing (back to Moriarty.)) Warning, very... stream of conscious writing ahead.
Moriarty has been baiting Sherlock with texts and other things, but Sherlock has ignored them because he knows Moriarty wants John dead and Sherlock as his prize.
But the strain is wearing on him, and John notices, worries. Though he grapples with his feelings and doesn’t say anything, thinking Sherlock would dismiss his concerns as fussing.
Then Moriarty gets Mary to text John in a calculated move. After some back and forth (possibly over the phone, instead of text?), Mary baits the trap, suggesting John offer himself in Sherlock’s place (or rather, leads John to suggest it).
“There is another option, you know…”
Perhaps she suggests taking Moriarty down together, and tries to sweet-talk him…
But in the end, that’s not what causes John to decide (though the audience might think so at first).
John hands himself over and Mary says: “I knew you’d see sense eventually” with a smile, then leads him to Moriarty (she hopes she’ll get to keep him, after).
Meanwhile, John’s written Sherlock a letter, asking him to take care of little Watson… and revealed his mental state, and a vague outline of his plan.
Some sort of confessional thing. Though it stops short of saying the final confession (love).
It’s enough for Sherlock to realise things are Dire, and he wants to rush off and find John (ooh, perhaps Mary sent a timed text, some sort of ‘save John Watson’ thing?).
Yet there is baby Watson to consider, and John’s entrusting her to Sherlock’s care… he tries to leave and hail a cab to take them to Molly’s, but the streets are eerily quiet.
Then Mrs H arrives back from bridge earlier than expected, having had to walk the last part due to traffic blockages… entrances to Baker St have been cordoned off, and she feared the worst.
(Mycroft, being “helpful” – to John. Prioritising Sherlock’s safety.)
Sherlock summarises the situation to Mrs Hudson, then gives her baby W in exchange for the keys to Mrs H’s car.
“Get inside and stay there, stay away from windows. … if I’m not back with John in an hour, call Lestrade and tell him to make with all haste to Roland-Kerr Further Education College!”
Sherlock goes to be the hero and save John for a third time… back where it all began, at the old college where John shot Jeff Hope for Sherlock.
John nearly sacrifices himself to blow up a Semtex-clad Moriarty or something (a la Drop of Water)… shooting Moriarty with his gun would do it.
But he hesitates too long, and then Moriarty stops him by telling him Sherlock’s arrived and Mary’s got her sights on him
A role reversal scene of The Fall … and Moriarty’s first mistake is reminding John of that
This helps John start putting the pieces together, and he makes a speech of his own… the reason John decided to walk into the apparent trap wasn’t because of Mary, he couldn’t care less about her now.
No, it was his thoughts on Sherlock sacrificing himself for John countless times over the years – most notably The Fall and Magnussen’s shooting – that did it. He did it for Sherlock… just like at The Pool, five years ago.
Moriarty laughs, and makes his second mistake, reminding John that if John had been faster, and Sherlock had run off and left John that night, all of this could have been avoided by John and JM’s deaths. “But he never seems to be able to leave you alone for long, does he, Johnny? And tonight, you’ve signed his death warrant.”
Sherlock is led in by Mary during this speech and he and John stand together against Moriarty… the confrontation forcing John to put the growing revelation on hold.
But still, it’s impossible for anyone not to notice that John and Sherlock are able to communicate with just a handful of glances… “you okay?” “yes… baby okay?” “safe” “why’d you come here, I was trying to stop you having to”
“we’re stronger together” Sherlock says aloud.
Soon, Mary realises that Moriarty was never going to let her have John, and Moriarty kills her with a bullet through her forehead before she can become a liability.
The whole ‘burning heart’ thing happens – Moriarty cuts John’s chest with a knife/ dagger that’s been “sterilised” (as JM puts it) in fire (it’s still white-hot)…
Sherlock screams John’s name when this happens, and John looks over and finally starts observing.
Then John realises… he wants to live. (Not just because of the potential of Sherlock, not just for baby W, but for himself.) He finally stops blaming himself for things that weren’t his fault and decides to live.
Of course, that means getting rid of Moriarty first…
idk how, because he’s wearing Semtex, so how do John and Sherlock escape when there's no water to absorb an explosion?
After, there’s the “John? Say you’re not hurt!” moment.
The final confirmation… and John knows.
Which would, of course, lead to a love confession… back in Baker Street.
Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I hope you don't mind me posting it too. I'm so fascinated by the bits of my version your dream kept AND the ways you took those details as a springboard for a new scenario. Great job to your subconscious, very symbolically resonate detailing here, all very in character, I love it.

What's wrong with Ez?
it's been a while since I rewatched the show, but just rewatched the first season in my watch-all-the-tdp-to-prep-for-watching-s4 adventure, and I have a minor complaint and a major complaint that have stayed since the first time I watched the show.
minor complaint: his VA isn't a... great actor. not a huge issue, I've watched and loved many things with crummy child actors. she just needs more experience and/or training. (edit: apparently actor is a girl)
major complaint: the "he can talk to animals" thing — arguably the core of his character arc in early tdp — comes out of absolutely nowhere in the last episode of s1.
like, Ez is like "I can talk to animals" *gazes into the distance dramatically* and Callum is like "that's horseshit" and I was also like "that's horseshit" because they were trying to treat it like a Big Dramatic Thing when it was an unexpected swerve.
rayla is like "why would he lie?" and me and callum say in-sync "because he's a kid." "I can speak with animals" is like a first-level Second Grade Lie To Make Yourself Sound Cool. like, y'know that girl in elementary school who always said she had the soul of a horse or whatever? it's obviously a harmless bit of fun, but the whole scene in S1E09 is borderline comedic because they treat it SO fucking seriously. it sounds like Ez just said "my dad works at Nintendo" and then he looks off into the distance as the symphony swells in the background.
I try to avoid using this word in this way, but, and I mean this in a literal sense, the whole sequence makes me cringe. I've heard people recommend TDP by saying "the animation in the first season is rough, but it gets better in season 2!!" and I feel like I have to do basically the same thing but with saying "the first season ends on an unbelievably stupid bullshit plot twist that will make you feel like the show was made for four-year-olds, but the rest of the show is good! I promise!!".
on rewatch I can tell there was extremely minor foreshadowing, but it wasn't anything that you would notice — Ez talks to animals once or twice, and he seems to more-or-less understand Bait (y'know, like... a character in a kids' cartoon) but there's zero anything to indicate that he has a Special Magical Ability To Speak With Animals, or even that he has A Strange Mysterious Something About Himself.
any foreshadowing they tried to do was well under the "slightly silly/unrealistic stuff in a kids' cartoon" threshold. Like, the fact that Ed Elric can survive massive cranial head trauma via wrench isn't an alchemy thing, or even an automail thing, it's just a silly anime thing; similarly, if you even notice Ez talking to animals in S1E01-08, it's not going to register as "odd magical thing" or even "unusual thing Ez does", it's just "thing Ez is doing because he's a character in a fantasy cartoon for kids".
it's poorly written and shoddily executed.
to be clear, this isn't a character problem — obviously he wouldn't go around being like I CAN SPEAK TO ANIMALS, and there's nothing wrong with the concept of someone who can speak with animals — it's a writing and presentation problem.
this ran longer than I thought it would. well, anyway

Thought I'd give it a try. In response to this post from @piratecaptainscaptainpirates
Ended up ranking a bunch of first and last and shovelling the rest in the middle without particular consideration for their placement. That middle section is in no way set in stone.
The Innkeeper, s2e03. My go to comfort episode. And knowing the amount of work and love put into its final minutes makes me ecstatic about it. Had it on a loop in the background at some point.
The Pilot, s1e01. I just love it. Meeting everyone for the first time, Stede is adorable, he has glasses (which are the loml actually and the only reason I keep watching this stupid show is my hope to see them again), and dressing up as a bunch of fancy boys, and the British arseholes, officer Hornberry, and Nigel, an all. Just the right amount of quirkiness for my taste. It is incredible. I'd probably have put it in the first place if it weren't occupied already.
Act of Grace, s1e09. Love from the start to the end. The whole interrogation sequence, the Crew, all of them and every one in particular, the great punch, Chauncey, Hornberry, this man is a fearsome pirate, soft desperate touches, the king George himself overthinking things as usual, boys' outfits in the academy (I see a person in those breeches, shirt, socks and shoes - I offer them my hand in marriage. It's a reflex), the kiss and soft touches again, Ed's delight and the most baby Stede's face. And the heartbreak.
This is Happening, s1e07. I love the way the world expands and deepens and breathes there. I love Jim's storyline. Olu shines. The Swede. Nana is bonkers and horrible and toxic and great and "my only family", which will be paralleled later to a certain other toxic character. And Blackbeard's Bar&Grill&Other Delicacies&Delights&Fishing Equipment and Snake Snacks. And Lucius' intervention and speech which I'm unable to repeat at a fraction of the same speed for the life of me.
Fun and Games, s2e04. I can't believe myself now. On the first watch when Stede approached Ed under the blanket I was, to put it mildly, very cautious about the perspective of them actually talking it through on screen. Because talking it through on screen is a very tricky business when the viewer knows more than the characters. I can imagine a thousand ways of making it tedious and cringey to watch. But it turned out so very lovely. Unbelievably lovely. You wrote me a lovely talk-it-through!
We Gull Way Back, s1e08. Calico Jack is nauseating. But he had to be like that. Get off my ship. Now. Morning, Captain. No, it isn't. The telescope and the black (or rather red) eye. The Chain ❤️
The Best Revenge is Dressing Well, s1e05. I love their fancy outfits with a wig and flowers and little bows. And the pyramid scheme. And Stede's delight in causing havoc. And the moonlit chickening out.
Red Flags, s2e02. It is heartbreaking. And real. And heartbreaking. You have hope, it's cute. And Ed is insane[ly beautiful]. And heartbreaking.
Impossible Birds, s2e01. Because it feels so fucking real. And I'm afraid your life is better without me. And brings me flashbacks of me crashing wall tiles in a sliiiiiiightly similar situation. Thank goodness I never had a gun.
The Art of Fuckery, s1e06. It was a wonderful fuckery. Stede's stabbing face 😅 I'm a witch and this is my cat. Miao. And I'm your friend. And did I do it right?
The Gentleman Pirate, s1e03. The Cream of the Caribbean and the Genital Pirate. You've heard of me? Also blood does look good on all white garments as internet warriors should know.
A Damned Man, s1e02. Oh, please move! I probably have children, Bonnet. They will never see papa again! I'm a dirty filthy murderer! Take me away! Don't you trifle! He does have the eyes of a madman. Sorry, you do.
Mermen, s2e08. It's long overdue to put it somewhere. Let it be here. Because it was good and it made me feel good. And it finally stopped that torture, which had been the fandom experience up to this point with constant "Aha, eat your shit, Izzy-haters! We always knew he was a blameless little angel! And we are getting all so validated!" And turned it into a different one.
Discomfort in a Married State, s1e04. I don't know why it's so low. It is wonderful all the way through. I love it.
Wherever You Go, There You Are, s1e10. I love Mary. And Evelyn. Stede is painful to watch. But I loved the "unhand me or bleed" thing. Yes, baby, you have it in you, together with all the soft and frilly things. I'm here for it. Just choose your subject wisely next time and maybe don't drink so much. Ed is heartbreaking. Cutting the toe was frankly cathartic. Loved it (as a vindictive dick I am at heart) and hated it (for Ed's sake) simultaneously. And it ends on a hopeful note.
Man on Fire, s2e07. It is a good episode I suppose. Lots of things happening. Lots to love. But it pains me. And the characters and their doings cringe me at places. And I'm not strong enough for it.
The Curse of the Seafaring Life, s2e05. Oh, hello, it's me, and I'm unpredictable sometimes. I love my boy in his suit. And the revisiting of the moonlight scene, and the thumbs war, and "you won". But the episode as a whole felt like a filler and a waste of opportunity and time in a timewise constricted season.
Calipso's Birthday, s2e06. It feels like a cushion after you pull it out of a washing machine - all the stuffing is a lumpy wet mess here and there, the rest is just a sad empty sack. Also "poison into positivity" repeated again and again in a clanky way like a ball bearing in a spray paint can. It was driving me crazy and throwing me out of the story and into a filming set, where actors are failing to find a way to say a particular line from the script and instead of dropping it or replacing it with something more organic, power through, with, well, that exact clanking result. I loved Ned Low though, he was cute. And the kiss and the curtain thing were hot as the fucking, which followed.

The ending was good though, for a huge amount of fans. People's enjoyment didn't hinge on dean and cas getting together. You realize destiel shippers, as absolutley loud and overbearing as you are, are the minority of fans. Why would a small subset of fans get to dictate the ending lol, they threw you a nugget to keep you quiet. Personally, it was great for me - the brothers retiring to heaven together as they said they'd do. And no gimmicky rescues anymore from heaven or hell - growth!
i don't know how to tell you that destiel is the least of mine, and a lot of people's worries. i never thought they would do it. i didn't convince myself there would be some grand gesture in the finale. it isn't bad because there was no destiel, it's bad because it's bad. it wasn't the brothers "retiring" it was one dying in a lazily written ending where he dies from something completely mundane despite having beaten all odds, and the other living a boring, insignificant life with a faceless wife and children we never got time to care about.
it was said in another post, but you could literally watch s1e01 and the finale with nothing in between and you would lose nothing. the journey became meaningless because of one episode. if they wanted a heaven ending that was actually good, they shouldn't have killed dean less than halfway through the episode.
that is a bad story and im sorry you have such bad taste. get well soon xoxo

Fic Rec list for s1e01: Pilot
I just thought of making a fic rec list for each episode, maybe 5-6 fics per ep. Let’s see how far i can get.
Please do mind the tags, though I will attempt to mark any squicks and triggers.
Do Not Disturb - enemyofperfect. Outsider POV. This is from the point of view of Harold’s two henchmen in the Pilot who are asked to move John. cw: mentions of non-con.
Defining Relevance - jedibuttercup. From John’s POV, sometime post the pilot but before ep 2. A neat character study.
Need to Know - TheHiddenMemory  John’s pov again, and an absolutely neat look into his raw mindset at the beginning of the show.
Strip Search - Zaniida. A very interesting au of the pilot, from Harold’s pov plausible and well done. Zaniida has also written an fun abridged version found here.
The Man Behind The Suit  - Aragarna. John’s pov again, seeing a pattern here. A fun piece with John and him getting his iconic uniform
Oyster Bay - JDKloosterman  Fusco’s pov, a great look into Fusco’s head at the end of the ep, with his voice (and him) being captured quite perfectly.
The Beta Period - Croik.  Events of the numbers before John, numbers Harold couldn’t save, leading upto the pilot.

It may help to understand human affairs to know that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people.

Would you ever write... a fic centering on Joan and Sherlock at/around the opera? (I'm intrigued by the scenario's potential for theatricality, and think it would be fun to see what you might do with it.)
Hm, I think I’d take it in a different direction you’re positing: I’d be interested in exploring if Sherlock’s position on opera has shifted since S1E01, especially since he reconciled with his father and with his own identity as a musician. I do think that Sherlock’s antipathy to opera in that first episode is a rejection of his father: so much of opera’s funding comes from wealthy patrons who want to be known as philanthropists while failing to challenge their own class position or provide any kind of relief or assistance to the people who are suffering in the class war. Just as, when Sherlock finally picks up the violin again, he secretly busks with a quartet in the park, as far from the wealthy-patrons world of Institutionalized Arts as he can get, so I think his involvement with or appreciation of opera would be similarly unfashionable among the wealthy set.
That said, I’m not in a great position to write the story: I burnt out on opera a while back (we had several years of season tickets at the local opera house, but I finally had to quit because Too Many Dead Ladies), and I’m not sure I have the energy to come up with two characters’ worth of Opera Opinions or research the full extent of the New York opera scene. Also, I’m woefully out of practice with writing Elementary -- I’d need to do a bunch of canon review -- and I don’t really like writing Sherlock-centric Elementary stories. (I’m still mad at the show for giving Sherlock so much more character development than Joan.)
Not gonna say never -- obviously I already have capital-T Thoughts on this topic -- but it probably wouldn’t be any time soon.
