I know you’ve posted about ratings in the past but I would be sooo curious to hear what you think about the finale ratings? They’ve been dipping so low the last few weeks that a part of me thinks it’s definitely that last scene that brought in more viewers. But, I dunno. 👀 It’ll also be interesting to see how the premiere does.
Hello!
Okay, I had to do some research on this one. Before I get into the Season 4 ratings, I wanted to first look at 9-1-1's seasonal averages to see how they compare. (M = Million; D = Demographic)
General Data:
Season One: premiered with 6.8M views and scored 1.78 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with a 6.3M viewer average and a 1.65D average Season Two: premiered with a 9.8M viewers and scored 2.56 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with 6.0M viewer average and a 1.37D average Season Three: premiered with 7.1M viewers and a 1.59 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with 6.8M viewer average and a 1.38D average Season Four: premiered with 7.1M viewers and a 1.22 among the 18-49yo demographic and ended with approx. 6.4M viewers* (seen conflicting reports) and a 1.05D average.
(ALSO: Not really relevant but totally of interest: S1E1 of 9-1-1 Lone Star premiered with 11.4M views. WOW)
Season Four Data
Season 4 ended with a total Nielsen rating of 1.7 which is average for scripted network shows of this caliber (for context: Grey's Anatomy also ended with a 1.7). Scripted network shows are NEVER going to beat out football/live sports or reality television like but for what it is, 9-1-1 does pretty well. (source)
Tumblr media
To your point about the ratings dipping low lately, the truth is that Season 4's episodic ratings have dropped significantly compared to 9-1-1's previous seasons (1.53, 1.21, and 1.19 were their lowest episodic ratings for S1-3 respectively with 0.85 being Season 4's lowest episodic rating. OUCH). Even though 9-1-1's episodic ratings have dropped this season, their viewer average remains the same. 9-1-1 has NEVER dropped below 5.1M viewers (their highest viewer count, of course, being 9.8M for S2E1). Their highest views this season was Episode 2 "Alone Together" with 7.2M, and their lowest views this season was Episode 12 "Treasure Hunt" with 5.8M. (source)
Tumblr media
It's hard to say what, exactly, caused this decline but the world was in shambles for a minute there so I'm not stressed about it. Interestingly, 9-1-1's episodic ratings for Season 4 dropped after their midseason hiatus; not sure why or if that's even calculable, but it is fascinating. As for the uptick in viewers like you mentioned, it's fair to say that the end of Episode 13 did draw more viewers. Whether it's the buddie of it all or something else, 9-1-1's demographic responds well to story arcs that follow their main characters (ex. episodes 3-5, the Daniel Buckley saga, clocked in the second highest views all season, and the tsunami arc clocked in some of the highest views of Season 3). Incidentally, I think this is why their views were kind of messy this year. A lot of episodes this season were filler episodes. There weren't a lot of major plot points to pursue and there definitely wasn't a lot of character development, especially not among the original cast members.
Now, okay. Here's where we dip into opinion territory.
(putting the rest under the cut)
Opinions
While I personally love when 9-1-1's season finales are wrapped up in a nice little bow with little-to-no cliffhangers, I'm not sure I would have done that this year. As I mentioned before, there were very little substantive storylines in 9-1-1 this year. The "meatiest" storylines either focused on other people (Albert in the pileup, Hen's mom being ill), were only one or two episodes, or didn't have enough development that would have made the story, and eventual resolution, worthwhile (i.e. the shooting). Maddie's PPD has yet to be resolved, but when it comes to sensationalist television and what actually draws people in, Eddie's recovery from the shooting would have been far more engaging (NOTE: I love Maddie and I think her story is important, I'm just speaking in general). Obviously, this season was cut short for COVID reasons, but those missing four episodes really do make a difference when it comes to character growth/plot development. I'm looking forward to those additional four episodes next year!
While I'm on the topic of storylines and audience engagement, I think one problem 911 is running into is where and how they stand against 911LS. When you have two shows of relatively the same caliber, you have to figure out how to distinguish one from the other, otherwise your viewers will just be watching two versions of the same story. Tim and Brad have decided to distinguish the two shows by having Lone Star lean into the more serious, gritty storylines (i.e. Judd and Grace's accident, multiple on-screen suicide attempts, the arsonist immolating himself, etc), and that's great, but the problem is that 9-1-1 has drifted into "safe" territory. You can always expect a goofy little laugh and to end the episode on a relatively happy note, and that's nice and all, but that's not how you build a successful show. The WORST thing 9-1-1 could do right now is play it safe. They only have about one or two more seasons before viewer fatigue starts to set in if they keep going this route. Sure, they'll keep the majority of their loyal viewers by virtue of the fact that they've spent years invested in this show and have no interest in not watching, but that's a lazy way to keep viewers. 9-1-1 should continue with their velocity of having Eddie get shot. That scene alone made all 40+ minutes of the episode worth it. Give the characters more storylines that don't always focus on their emotions. I love Buck's growth, Bobby's struggle with sobriety, and Hen's journey into med school, but 9-1-1's writers need to push the boundaries of the boxes they've written themselves into.
And this isn't about Buddie, but if the relationship between Buck and Eddie were to go fully, explicitly canon, ratings would SOAR. They're not bad as it is, but if they went that extra mile, I imagine it would push them well out of the 1.7 range and possibly into the 1.9-2.0. The LGBTQ+ community is a very loud community; combined with the quality of the story being told through Buck and Eddie and how revolutionary it would be to have two gay/bisexual, attractive, leading men on a primetime network show fall in love and build a family together? That'd be a ratings goldmine. 9-1-1 is comfortable and they have strong network backing; if ever they were going to take a risk like that, the next two-ish years would be the perfect time to do it.
Finally, to your last point I think 9-1-1 Season 5 is on a pretty good trajectory to premiere well. Their premieres always pull in their highest views (S1: 6.8M, S2: 9.8M, S3: 7.163M and S4: 7.193M, respectively), so if I had to guess, I'd say Season 5 is going to premiere with a comfortable 6.9M - 7.1M viewers. We'll see where things go with the development of Season 5, what kind of storylines they come up with, and how we leave off by the end of the first half of the season, but I'm optimistic and I'm really looking forward to it!
Thanks for stopping by!

Starco Fic Recs
Disclaimer: This list is largely curated to my own personal preferences (minimal feelings angst, minimal AUs, character development >>> plot) and has a fairly high bar for quality in characterization, etc. There will likely be many popular/beloved fics that I really don’t think highly of at all and therefore don’t make the cut. Feel free to DM me things you think I should consider adding, but I make no promises.
And of course I’d be flattered if you gave my own works a chance - stop by my About Me section for links! Thus far I’m particularly proud of the post-canon series I just started in collaboration with an awesome team, The Greatest Gift.
(Updated 9/26 - I decided to redo the list since people might appreciate seeing it in the tags again. To anyone whose own work is featured here that I haven’t personally responded to - I’m a tough critic with a lot of strong personal preferences so PLEASE do not take my gripes as condemnations of your skills - if they make the list at all, I think they’re worth a read!)
See below for the very thorough list!
Bolded titles indicate must-read.
Italicized titles indicate work is incomplete (in the case of continuous stories).
Asterisks indicate new additions from last update (3 for brand new, 1 for status update).
I’ve VERY loosely organized the categories by personal priority order this time around, but read the descriptions and decide for yourself!
Must-Reads
Forevermore - A Starco wedding story (with a bit of Jantom as well). Simply one of the best fics I’ve read in the fandom. I have no meaningful criticism to give it, and that’s the highest praise I can possibly give something.
Monarchs of Mewni (+ Traditionally Lovingly Yours) - A series of chronologically disconnected oneshots set years after the show. The backstory is very dated given how long ago it started (Jarco was kinda serious for a few years, Tomstar v2 never happened, etc) but overall it’s lovely. Has a bit of plot, a bit of Jantom, a lot of other character interactions, and a boatload of Starco - plus a Starco kid who is a decently developed character but also doesn’t just take over and crowd out Star and Marco themselves! That alone deserves merit.
Ruined - Aftermath of a hypothetical return of Monster Arm. Angst with a happy ending (and one of the few angsty fics that gets my seal of approval), so read this extra early if that’s more your schtick than mine.
study buddies - Y’know what, fuck it, I’m putting this here. It’s a short ball of Starco fluff but it’s one of the sweetest and fluffiest fluffballs I’ve seen in a long time and it’s very emotionally immersive and y’all needa read it.
*When Two Worlds Collide - One of my favorite postcanon series thus far. I admit I’m really not big on “magic returns!” plots in postcanon (which this has), and the sections that focus on that are hit or miss for me, but overall it has some of the funnest and cutest characterization and gags I’ve seen in any SVTFOE fic, ever. Absolutely worth following (and it has a fair amount of art to go along with it!)
***Star Chef - Oneshot (two chapters, so twoshot technically?) set in the same universe as Starlight Justiciar (see below) and is just a day in the life of Star and Marco. Goes absolutely above and beyond at emotional immersion and little nuances and details to bring the world and characters to life, which elevates it to something special to me.
Light of the Sun and Stars - (Promoted to Must-Read!) One of the few heavily divergent AU fics I care for. Marco is an orphan raised by monsters, and meets Star after running away. Just finished its “first season” and I've loved the recent chapters, am very excited to see where it goes.
*Don’t You Let Me Go - Wonderfully fluffy post-Cleaved Starco, one of my favorite oneshot “epilogues”.
i want to tell you (but i don’t know how) - Post season 3 fic detailing the growth of Star and Marco’s relationship. It’s spectacular writing and shows off a lot of the true depth of Starco beyond just being cute.
Adult - NSFW warning, non-explicit (aged-up characters). It’s a story about the journey towards Star and Marco’s first step into adulthood together -  it’s not graphic and way more focused on the emotions involved, but it still is definitely more explicit than your average FFnet rated-T fic. If sexual themes ain’t your thing, I totally respect that, but this is a charming and funny piece of writing.
Lawchan’s various oneshots - There isn’t a great compilation for them right now so the best I can do is give you her tag for it and you can comb through it yourself. I like some more than others here, but they’re all very well-written - my only gripes with some of them are my own tastes in subject matter, so have fun perusing this on your own.
I Will Always Be There For You - A really pure and wholesome Starco oneshot. Very well-written.
Post-Canon Series to Follow
I figured with the show being over, and so many people starting their own series, I should include a lot of them here even if I’m personally not the biggest fan just to help gather them up so people can decide for themselves. Little bit looser on judgment here.
*Life on Earthni A to Z - Non-chronological postcanon slice of life oneshots, Starco and some Globclipsa and Jantom. Overall really good so far, one of my favorites in terms of direction.
*When Dimensions Cleave (sequel - Unforgettable Getaway) - Another postcanon series hellbent on bringing back magic queen lore, but it has some solid Starco fluff still. Credit where it’s due, the “Star constantly freaking out over what a horrible person she was” bit that I called preachy in the prior rec post gets somewhat less preachy and does end up actually going somewhere as part of character development, but I’m left scratching my head at how they all act sometimes. The good parts are certainly good, though, and in terms of quantity of lovey dovey Starco, it really can’t be beat (especially the sequel) and that’s worth something by itself.
We’re a Miracle - Extra adorkable postcanon fluff. Lighter on the “but ACKSHUALLY MAGIC IS BACK” stuff compared to the others, but it’s there, like almost every postcanon fic in existence.
Star vs the Sands of Time - Heavy politic/lore postcanon fic, not my fav but if that’s more your thing then great. Has some casual Starco too.
Goodbye Isn’t Forever - More POV dives into Cleaved.
Fake Proposal - Some decent jokey but cute fluff
The Stars Above - Some exploration of Earthni
New World - A bit over-the-top meta, but fun fluff
The Starlight Justiciar - Four years after canon, some social change plot stuff and some decent Starco. Not the biggest fan of some of the plot stuff but check it out for yourself!
Starco vs the Forces of Evil - Another collab fic/art thing. Fair warning, I really am not personally a huge fan of a lot of the characterization and plot decisions here (see my notes on Sign of the Moon waaaay down below) but decide for yourself, don’t let my pickiness dictate your own preferences!
Ready For The Future - Technically a oneshot (with some Starco) but sets up some Mina plot, if you’re interested in more give it a follow/review.
Worlds Together - Some Starco and exploration of Earthni.
Epilogue -  Some Starco and exploration of Earthni.
***A Dark Horse - Has a few really nice lovey dovey Starco bits but also lots of superdrama with politics stuff. There’s a lot of fics here that I honestly just windowshop the scene I like for a quick fix of dopamine every now and then and skim at most otherwise, and this is one.
Revolution - end of canon AU where Moon is as anti-monster as Mina, dark as fuck. Only putting it here cuz some of y’all angstlords might like it.
Shorter Works/Oneshot Collections
I’ll Carry Your World - Big ole’ ball of wonderful Starco fluff with an important moment between them (written before end of show so a bit divergent).
***LoveIsTheStrongestKindOfMagic - Very short and basic fluff.
Starco Week 5 (Hugs Included) - Some of it is postcanon Earthni oneshots and others are from the Light of the Sun and Stars AU (see above). Great author, fun as hell writing style.
Fragile - Star worries about keeping her boyfriend Marco safe.
Complete - An older Star reflects on her past and present. Short and sweet.
Knighthood - Simple fluff piece on if Star and Marco got together after Storm the Castle.
Too Hot to Move - Star and Marco try to survive a heat wave on Earthni. Also funny fluff.
Marco Make-out Mayhem - Star really likes kissing Marco. Funny fluff.
Cleaved Together - NSFW warning, non-explicit (aged up) - Star and Marco’s first time. Very very overly focused on the whole purity/sacredness of first time thing, but still pretty cute.
Like Us - Really nice, sweet casual reflection on her life with Marco from a future Star’s POV.Toothpaste Kisses - Short fluff about its title.
A Friend’s Memento - Starco fluff with some reflection on the results of destroying magic
Plum Pie - Some goofy antics and hurt/comfort.
Not Losing You - A little dive into Marco’s POV at the end of Cleaved. Also adds a kiss.
We Belong Together - More speculative slightly angsty comfort/fluff.
Enough - A nice study of the emotions and thoughts during the last scenes of Cleaved, adds some depth to it.
Heartless - A bit of angst over magic going away with some sweet Starco comfort.
Together - Post-Cleaved Starco megafluff.
My Prince - Starco fluff set in a world where they were together before Cornonation.
Dancing with a Star - Starco fluff from alt S4.
Love in the Time of Pancakes - Written hours after my last update of the list, another little ditty based on the pancake promo.
Pancakes - Fluffy S4-promo-based little oneshot.
Hers - Hurt/comfort/confession-y fic, has some really nice moments and shows off a lot of how much they care about each other. Nice to see after such a drought.
Someone to Stay - Another hurt/comfort fic, nice and simple.
A Viola, a Violin, and a Butterfly’s Sword - some nonlinear oneshots about Starco. Some kinda weird directions gone in with the “plot” but it’s pretty good overall.
Falling - One of many, many fics from throughout the fandom’s history about Star and Marco getting together. Short and sweet.
forget about white horses & once upon a time - Drabble collection of various moments scattered throughout Star and Marco’s lives. Cute fluff.
The One Where I Thought I Lost You - Post-BFM fic where Marco realizes his feelings for Star earlier. Very wholesome.
christmases when you were mine - Established relationship fluff.
lightning in your veins, thunder in your heart - Post-season 3 established relationship fluff (slightly divergent, written before 3B).
once upon a december - Established relationship fluff.
Flags - Alternate rendition of the episode “Flags” with Starco.
Spells and Hot Chocolate - Wintry fluff.
5 Ways to Say ‘I Love You’ - Post BFM with some events in Star and Marco’s lives.
You’re My Wish Come True - This is just indulgent Starco trash. I won’t even argue for the characterization/writing quality, this is just a straight-up guilty pleasure.
Wands and Nachos - ^
The Princess and the Safe Kid - ^
A Day in the Life of Starco - ^
A very Starco Xmas - ^
Could It Be -^
All the times Star wore Marco’s hoodie - ^
Protect Me, Squire - ^
Crushed - Star and Marco both get turned down by their respective crushes and find comfort in each other.
Stay - Cuddly fluff. There’s another Stay out there which I frankly can’t stand with will-they-won’t-they melodrama out the wazoo, so don’t get confused.
Longer Series
*The Inescapable Us - Really tropey miscommunication will-they-won’t-they type of thing. Not my fav, especially now that the show is over and finished that leg of Star and Marco’s story once and for all (I’m personally WAY less interested in things that redo something canon already did). However, where it’s at now has some really good Starco moments. Fully admitted that I hella skimmed most of it until the parts I enjoyed, but And if you’re more fine with that type of thing then you’ll probably really like it, it’s well-written otherwise.
Together We Fall - Throwback S2 AU fic where Star and Marco go to the dance together instead and Toffee makes moves earlier. Gets kinda dark but has a lot of nice Starco along the way.
Safer, Sorrier - A recent rewrite of an older fic, Better Safe Than Sorry, where Star has to leave early to become queen and Marco is alone for a few months before they reunite. A very dated premise (post season 1 ish) but quite good.
Sugar and Spice - NSFW warning, non-explicit (NOT aged-up characters). In this fic, Star and Marco have gotten together after BFM, and a spell gone wrong leads to Mewberty relapses with obvious consequences. This fic has adorable Starco moments, but what I love this for above all is the other character interactions (especially Glossaryck and Star’s parents). This is probably a controversial add-on to the list, but I stick by my decision - if the subject matter isn’t your thing, then by all means avoid it.
Beyond Dimensions - Plotfic + established Starco where some ancient sorceress has to trap Star to escape and try to take over Mewni. Maybe y'all are more into plot stuff than me but the Starco that’s there is quite good regardless.
Starfall - NSFW warning, explicit (aged-up characters). Probably the most popular one to make the cut. Star and Marco are forced apart and have to find their way back together. Very old fic, lot of dated stuff here, and the narration and plot itself can get kinda questionable sometimes, but it has a lot of good Starco and some interesting plot elements that make it, in my opinion, worth a read despite a lot of flaws. A few epilogue chapters contain rather explicit sexual content, so be wary of that (and the epilogue itself after Ep 6 kinda transitions into a nextgenverse, so maybe just skip that entirely).
The Star Butterfly Effect - The sole fic on the list that is purely plot-based, with very little actual Starco development whatsoever. I can’t even really explain it, just give it a shot and see what you think; I was rather engrossed by the plot, and that’s rare for me.
The Princess and her Knight, Return of the Empire The former fic in this series is way more character-based, while the latter is very heavy plot stuff. Pretty decent character writing with some fluff. There’s a third that I honestly can’t recommend because I completely dropped it because it was just a nonstop war story.
Experimental - REALLY heavy, dark AU where Star and Marco are tortured and corrupted. It’s pretty decent.
Blood Moon Blitz - Alt BFM fic of Marco going to fight Toffee with Star. unfortunately dropped without completing, but what’s there is pretty solid.
Read at Your Own Risk…
The Sign of the Moon, The Dance of the Stars - Starts post-3A, involves the growth of Star and Marco’s relationship as they take on foes in and out of the castle and learn more about the Blood Moon. This series is rather… melodramatic, and there were some chapters and character interactions I flat out did not enjoy reading. But some people aren’t as strict on character interpretations as I am and would love such a long plot-based Starco fic, so overall I still will at least list it and let you decide for yourself. There might be a third entry in this series now, but I dropped it before then.
Photos - I hesitate to include this one here because the “Tom is a perfect angel who must sacrifice his love for Star” thing pisses me off. But just skip all that (and ignore the random “a part of me will always love Tom” line) and it’s a really nice post-s3 confession fic.

Mask headcanons :0?
UM YES. Have all of them!! I love this sickly child. And thank you for the ask!
Mask Headcanons:
▪Mask is a video game expert. Give him a controller and he will finish the level for you in record time.
▪He loves chocolate but chocolate doesn't love him. He isn't allergic but it doesn't agree with his stomach; that doesn't stop him from eating it or stashing it on him.
▪Has a huge energy drink addition. Mask is an insomniac and in order to keep his eyes open, he's gotten to the point where he lives off of energy drinks; his day begins with at least downing two of them. His team is trying to help easing him off of them.
▪He's a weapons specialist, in a different kind of Sense. Mask is very interested in the mechanics and parts of a weapon and likes to take items apart and put them back together, sometimes even creating something new or some kind of trap out of the spares. He also like scavaging for pieces and bolding onto Certain parts.
▪If he were to meet Marina, they would become fast friends because mechanical buddies.
▪He and his team have vicious prank wars, but its usually 3 v 1, with him undefeated. Can't out prank him, the Prank King... They also make a lot of Emperor jokes during their prank wars, complete with Mask holding toy dualies.
▪He will never verbalize it but his Team is everything to him and he knows nothing would be nearly as fun without them.
▪Out of the S4, he is the closest to Skull. They both have very similar attitudes and enjoy spending time together, even if most of the time they don't say much. Usually, they sit together in silence and play Mask's latest video game, or Skull showing Mask how a new weapon works, or letting Mask dissect an old weapon... No matter what it is, they both enjoy the quiet company from the other.

I sing so silently (so I don't feel unclean)
by Jemimimi
Peter was adjusting to life on the Carte Blanche well enough, he thought. All things considered: the quest to steal a legendary panacea, living amongst legends of the criminal world, reuniting with Juno—
Well. Peter thought he was doing just fine.
But— maybe it's because he's interacting with Juno more often, now, or maybe this is just the first time he's seen the lady in circumstances that aren't at least on the fringes of life-or-death, but he can't shake the feeling that something's off.
(Meanwhile, Juno's trying to balance actually living with other people for the first time in decades, trying to convince them he's a plain old human being, and doing his best not to hurt people any more than he has to. Maybe, if he's lucky, he'll figure out what the thing humming in the back of his mind is. And if he's even luckier, perhaps his brother will finally wake up.
And, stars bless him, if he's the most fortunate lady in existence, he might keep his family from hating him all the way through it.)

CBS ON THE AIR: A CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS ~ Part 1
March 26 – April 1, 1978
Tumblr media
The origins of CBS date back to January 27, 1927, with the creation of the "United Independent Broadcasters" network. The fledgling network soon needed additional investors though, and the Columbia Phonograph Company, manufacturers of Columbia Records, rescued it in April 1927; as a result, the new network was renamed the Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System on September 18 of that year. Columbia Phonographic went on the air on September 18, 1927, with a presentation by the Howard L. Barlow Orchestra from flagship station WOR in Newark, New Jersey, and fifteen affiliates. This was the birth of CBS radio.
CBS's involvement in television dates back to the opening of experimental station W2XAB in New York City on July 21, 1931. Its initial broadcast featured New York Mayor Jimmy Walker, Kate Smith, and George Gershwin. The station boasted the first regular seven-day broadcasting schedule in American television, broadcasting 28 hours a week.
Tumblr media
To celebrate its fiftieth year of broadcasting, CBS devoted seven nights to a celebration of their history – nine and a half hours of air time: “CBS: On The Air – A Celebration of 50 Years.” The goal was to bring together more than 100 network stars, past and present, with Walter Cronkite and Mary Tyler Moore serving as overall hosts. Other stars and personalities stepped up to host nights they were associated with. The event was produced by Alexander H. Cohen and written by his wife, Hildy Parks.
The music for the event was written by some of the greatest theatre composers of the time with the main musical theme written by Leonard Bernstein. “Member of the Family” was written by Jerry Herman. “Cowboys and Clowns” was written by Jule Styne.
The event's announcer was Dick Tufeld.
The schedule:
Sunday, March 26 - “Night of 100 Stars” - co-hosted by Telly Savalas and Jean Stapleton
Monday, March 27 - “Have a Laugh on Us” - with Lucille Ball, George Burns, Arthur Godfrey, and Bea Arthur
Tuesday, March 28 - “Chills and Thrills with a Laugh Chaser” with Alan Alda, Garry Moore, and Phil Silvers
Wednesday, March 29 - “Dreams Come True” with Dick Van Dyke, Buddy Ebsen, Cicely Tyson, and Danny Kaye
Thursday, March 30 - “Join the Family” with Richard Thomas and the cast of “The Waltons”
Friday, March 30 - “We’re Getting Personal” with Lauren Bacall, Eve Arden, Bert Convy, Richard Crenna, Bonnie Franklin, Jim Nabors, and Linda Lavin
Saturday, April 1 - “A Rootin’, Tootin’, Hootin’ & Hollerin’ Salute to Cowboys and Clowns” with Carol Burnett, Carroll O’Connor, Art Carney, Isabel Sanford, Tony Randall, and Sherman Hemsley
Although CBS attempted to bring together as many of its stars as possible, a few were just unable–or unwilling–to be involved. According to TV Guide, Cher and Amanda Blake were sick, while ABC refused to allow Cloris Leachman to participate in a special on another network. Supposedly, Charlton Heston declined to give CBS permission to use his likeness.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball, who helped bring the television network to prominence in the 1950s, was part of the celebrations on Sunday as one of the 100 stars, and on Monday, the night she ruled on CBS with her three sitcoms.
Like other network anniversary celebrations, “CBS: On the Air” has never been repeated nor has it been officially released on any format. However, The Paley Center for Media has more than 40 listings relating to the specials, including complete installments, clip compilations, and rough cut reels.
Although they are not near each other on stage due to the alphabetical order of entrances, this is the last time Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance would be on the same television show.  Vance would make one more appearance on her own before her death in 1979.
Lucy Ricardo: “What are you? The Cuban television network?” Ricky Ricardo: “Yes. CBS. The Cuban Broadcasting System.”
Tumblr media
Sunday, March 26 - “Night of 100 Stars”
The 115 (or so) stars were introduced to viewers by the night that they first enjoyed success, starting with Sunday. Lucille Ball enters during the second group (Monday) and is one of the first because the stars are introduced alphabetically. Vivian Vance ends the Monday night group. It takes nearly nine minutes to introduce all the “members of the CBS family.”
Here are the CBS Stars with professional connections to Lucille Ball:
Sundays
Tumblr media
Arlene Francis (“What's My Line?”) was a panelist for Lucille Ball's six appearances on “What's My Line?” from 1954 to 1965.
Alan Funt (“Candid Camera”) guest-starred as himself (and his evil doppelganger) on “Lucy and the Candid Camera” (HL S4;E14) in 1971.
Valerie Harper (“Rhoda”) was in the chorus of Wildcat (1960) on Broadway starring Lucille Ball. Harper joined Lucy on “Dinah!” singing “Hey Look Me Over” in 1976 and sang a musical tribute to Ball at “The Kennedy Center Honors” in 1987.
Ann Sothern (“Private Secretary”) was one of Lucille Ball's closest friends from her days at RKO. Ball would always say that she would hang around the casting office asking if there were any roles Ann Sothern was too busy to do. She guest-starred as her “Private Secretary” character on the very first “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”  In return, Lucy appeared on her next sitcom, “The Ann Sothern Show.” Sothern played Rosie, the Countess Frambois, in several episodes of “The Lucy Show.”
Nancy Walker (“Rhoda”) did the 1943 film Best Foot Forward with Lucille Ball.
Mondays
Tumblr media
Beatrice Arthur (“Maude”) starred opposite Lucille Ball in the 1974 musical film Mame, recreating the role she created on Broadway. Like Valerie Harper, she paid tribute to Ball in song at “The Kennedy Center Honors” in 1987.
Lucille Ball (“I Love Lucy” / “The Lucy Show” / “Here's Lucy”)
Ken Berry (“Mayberry RFD”) was spotted by Lucille Ball performing on stage and put under contract to Desilu for the Desilu Workshop. He played himself on a 1968 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
George Burns (“Burns and Allen”) and Lucille Ball appeared on many TV variety and award shows together. In 1966 he played himself on “The Lucy Show” and did a cameo as himself on a 1970 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Arthur Godfrey (“The Arthur Godfrey Show”) also hosted “Talent Scouts” on which Lucile Ball did a guest appearance in 1963. After a career lull, Ball guest starred him on “The Lucy Show” as himself in March 1965.
Andy Griffith (“The Andy Griffith Show”) filmed his show on the Desilu backlot. Lucy interviewed Griffith on her radio show in 1965. In 1968, the two did a pantomime sketch on “The Tennessee Ernie Ford Special.” He finally teamed with Ball on “Here's Lucy” in 1973.
Don Knotts (“The Andy Griffith Show”) played Lucy Carter's “last blind date” on a 1973 episode of “Here's Lucy.”
Art Linkletter (“The Art Linkletter Show”) was first mentioned on “The Lucy Show” in 1962 and would appear as himself four years later. Lucille Ball was his guest on “House Party” in 1964. Linkletter will also play himself on a 1970 episode of “Here’s Lucy.”
Danny Thomas (“Make Room for Daddy”) and Lucille Ball's careers are forever linked. “Make Room for Daddy” was filmed at Desilu Studios and when it moved to CBS the characters did a cross-over episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” exchanging homes with the Ricardos. In return, Lucy and Desi played Lucy and Ricky on an episode of “Make Room for Daddy.” When Thomas starred in a sequel titled “Make Room for Granddaddy” Ball guest-starred and did the same when he starred in the short-lived series “The Practice.” Thomas appeared as himself in a 1965 episode of “The Lucy Show” and as an eccentric artist on “Here's Lucy” in 1973.
Vivian Vance (“I Love Lucy” / “The Lucy Show” / “Here's Lucy”) is best remembered as Lucy's best pal Ethel Mertz on “I Love Lucy.”  She returned to play Vivian Bagley on “The Lucy Show” and Vivian Jones on “Here's Lucy.”  The pair also were seen together on CBS in “Lucy Calls The President” in 1977.
Tuesdays
Tumblr media
Jamie Farr (“M*A*S*H”) was seen on “Lucy, The Rain Goddess” (TLS S4;E15) in 1966.
Garry Moore (“The Garry Moore Show”) was also the host of “I've Got A Secret” on which Lucille Ball appeared in 1956 and 1961. In between, she was a guest on “The Garry Moore Show” in 1960.
Phil Silvers (“The Phil Silvers Show”) played an efficiency expert on a 1966 episode of “The Lucy Show.” Lucy made a cameo appearance on “The Phil Silvers Show” in 1959.
Red Skelton (“The Red Skelton Hour”) did five films with Lucille Ball between 1938 and 1945, including DuBarry Was a Lady (1943). Skelton played himself on “Lucy Goes to Alaska” in 1959.
Wednesdays
Tumblr media
Steve Allen (“The Steve Allen Show”) was the guest-host or panelist for three of Lucy's appearances on “What's My Line?” and “I've Got a Secret.”  He played himself on “Lucy Calls the President” (1977).
Eva Gabor (“Green Acres”) made two appearances on “Here's Lucy,” once playing herself.
Danny Kaye (“The Danny Kaye Show”) appeared as himself on a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.” Before that, Ball guest-starred on two “Danny Kaye Specials.”
Dick Van Dyke (“The Dick Van Dyke Show”) invited Lucille Ball to appear on his short-lived variety show “Van Dyke & Company” in 1976.
Thursdays
Tumblr media
Ellen Corby (“The Waltons”) played Miss Hannah, Lucy Ricardo's high school drama teacher in “Lucy Meets Orson Welles” (ILL S6;E3) in 1956.  She also appeared in a 1963 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Fridays
Tumblr media
Eve Arden (“Our Miss Brooks”) did a one line cameo as herself in “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) in 1955. Arden and Ball did two films together at RKO in the late 1930s.
Richard Crenna (“Our Miss Brooks”) played Arthur Morton, a variation on his character Walter Denton in “Our Miss Brooks,” on “The Young Fans” (ILL S1;E20) in 1952.
Jim Nabors (“Gomer Pyle USMC”) did an uncredited cameo as Gomer Pyle in “Lucy Gets Caught Up in the Draft” (TLS S5;E9) in 1966. Both shows were shot at Desilu Studios.
Saturdays
Tumblr media
Carol Burnett (“The Carol Burnett Show”) was a protege of Lucille Ball's.  In 1966 Lucille Ball and Zero Mostel were the stars of “Carol + 2”. Ball and Burnett would exchange appearances on each other's shows. Carol made seven appearances on “The Lucy Show” and “Here's Lucy,” while Ball did four installments of “The Carol Burnett Show.”
Art Carney (“The Honeymooners”) played Lucille Ball’s husband in the 1967 film A Guide for the Married Man. He also starred in Lucille Ball’s 1976 TV special, What Now, Catherine Curtis? As well as her first special, Happy Anniversary and Goodbye in 1974.
Mike Connors (“Mannix”) played his iconic detective Joe Mannix on an episode of “Here's Lucy” in 1971.  Lucille Ball was responsible for rescuing “Mannix” from being canceled early in its run.
Fred MacMurray (“My Three Sons”) played himself in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” in 1958.
Audrey Meadows (“The Honeymooners”) played Lucy's sister on one episode of “Life With Lucy” (1986).
Tony Randall (“The Odd Couple”) played a mountain climbing executive on a 1971 “Here's Lucy.”
Betty White (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) was a life-long friend of Lucille Ball's. The two made no dramatic appearances together, but did co-star on episodes of “Password.”
Tumblr media
On Saturday, April 1, the special ended with these same celebrities lined up on a elevated walkway outside CBS Television City. Lucille Ball appears behind the screen credit for director Clark Jones.
