so wait, since i was just reminded of the recorder thing donna talked about in the giggle, i now have a question for uk ppl: do yall learn the recorder in school? like in a music class? and like how much do yall have music class over there?

#this is a very interesting topic for me as a music educator from the us #ik a guy from ireland and he said there was no music class in schools for him and like not the same country BUT same island #(as northern ireland. not the others in the uk but still) #and its so wild and fascinating music education is a fascinating field and the way we do it in the us seems to be largely vvv unique to us #for clarification on how things are different so ppl have a better idea on how to answer my question lol: #in the us music class is standard in elementary schools and most places have general music until abt 5th/6th grade (year 6/7) #(general music = basics- music games learn recorder SOME notation-reading; often classroom instruments eg boomwhackers claves maracas #orff instruments if you're lucky/from a school district that isnt poor. also some world music) #its less standardized after that and not every school will have music after middle school but concert bands and choirs are both huge here #choirs start right on the heels of general music classes (sometimes start earlier + students elect to be in choir instead of general music) #bands USUALLY start in 4th grade (year 5) but sometimes can be later 5th/6th (year 6/7) or even 7th (year 8) (WAY less common) #depends on the state generally 4th is most common i think (choirs start at around the same time i think so probs 4th but choir isnt my area #orchestras are weird bc theyre a lot less common but can commonly start younger bc of one of the big approaches to music ed (suzuki method) #so like maybe 3rd grade (year 4) maybe 4th w/ band (year 5) but i have a friend who teaches at a private school #& said they have 1st/2nd graders (year 2/3)!! orchestra is also not my area though #also marching bands: vv common! usually just in hs (starting 9th grade / year 10) bc it supports the football team at games #but starting in 8th grade (year 9) is also common (sometimes even 7th / year 8) #theres two different styles: collegiate/show band and competition. former is very rah rah pop music etc; competition is more abstract #show bands are clearly designed to entertain whereas competition is designed to be more impressive and tell a story #so more impact moments abstract shapes/lines on the field and has movements - opener ballad closer (fast-slow-fast)

the ballad of songbirds and snakes initial review/reaction

okay first of all. i absolutely loved it and thought it was very truthful to the book and covered all the main elements. francis lawrence just knows how to bring these books to life. tom blyth is just incredible as a young coriolanus snow and i can’t wait to see where his career takes him. i already loved rachel zegler after her performance in west side story, but it just felt like lucy gray was meant for her. her charisma, vocals and acting were just beautiful. the scenes where she’s singing with the covey really just brought those scenes from the book to life. the movie was fast paced and generally entertaining to watch. it felt so good to be back in this world that suzanne collins has created so exquisitely.

the only things i think were lacking, and i did think this when reading the book itself, is that the story feels a bit disjointed. like you’re jumping from place to place. i think the third act should be more fleshed out- more of snow’s time in 12, particularly the events leading up to his betrayal of lucy gray and sejanus. i’d like to see a bit more build up and suspense to those actions. i feel like they feel a bit too impulsive and sudden in line with the overall story. also the end scene at the cabin didn’t make as much sense without him founding out on the morning of running away about his transfer to district 2 imo. bc that felt like his motivation for turning on lucy gray, whereas in the movie he knows about that a lot earlier ?? i also think some scenes could have packed a bit more of an emotional punch? especially some of sejanus’ scenes that felt a bit cut short- like his reaction when marcus is hung up in the arena and his death scene. in general i feel like sejanus’ character and his relationship with coriolanus could have been more fleshed out in the movie.

overall i really enjoyed it and i can’t wait to see it again. it feels like a valuable addition to the franchise. i just don’t feel like it packs that emotional punch that the original trilogy does - but obviously there’s a lot less time to build up the storyline and character relationships in one movie/book. i’m also glad i reread the book before i saw the movie, bc i could hear people whispering around me when they didn’t understand certain things that were going on.. this feels like a movie for the fans, and i don’t know if it will resonate with general audiences as well

I saw a brilliant theory that during Taylor's speeches in 1989, she once said "love will not be complicated if there was only two options in relationships. You leave or you stay". Him starts with the line "so you were right there is always two. One who stays and one who leaves you". This was also the time Taylor was dedicating IKP to calcium and saying ILY to him. The production being so different from 1D and similar to HS1 convinced me it was an HS1 reject. But it was definitely written in early 2016 or late 2015.( I lean towards early 2016 because harry said sweet creature was the first song he wrote for HS1 barring TG)

i always assumed this was what he was referring to because like. idk i don’t think harry was watching random speeches from the 1989 world tour beyond like. maybe a few times when the intrusive thoughts won

that being said i can totally buy it being about taylor comparing her relationship with calvin to ikp— which i believe she was doing by summer 2015? and like. idk. but i think it’s very possible he wrote him during one direction— power ballads are just classic songwriter stuff and while that kind of stripped back raw vocal effect is all over hs1 it’s also just a classic way to do a demo of a power ballad? and it seems so much more lyrically immature to me than the stuff he wrote for hs1

Every time someone said we didn't understand the characters because we only see the movie and we need to read the book... Well lol, guess what, I read the book and now I am more sure then Lucy Gray was a manipulator, that Sejanus was dumb, and that Coryo was not born evil (he is unhinged and he become evil later, but not at the start and no even until the very end of the book).

4) What color or colors do you most associate with your OC?

Blue!! Mostly bc his uniform band (to signify what level/department he’s in) is blue but also that’s a Blue Guy

(SIDEBAR FOR WORLDBUILDING TANGENT— it’s a whole thing with the RF that ppl in most departments get to basically decide what they wear, you’re issued a standard uniform that a lot of ppl (Alonzo.) just go with but you’re also free to riff off of that basically as much as you want as long as you keep the colored band around the waist of your jacket so ppl know where you go)(the standard uniform also comes w light knee-pads built into the pants in the same color as the band but those are optional)

1. Kyrie’s only outfit is her customized uniform from when she was the RF’s special little mascot guy lmaooo (jacket got repossessed when she got arrested bc it still had the band on it so she’s technically impersonating a federal employee)

2. El is the only guy here who’s not a current or former RF employee and his jacket is a handmedown from the convent next to the tower so there’s no band on it! (Ditto the knees on the handmade pants)

3. There is not a mad science department for Ari’s band to correspond to so theirs on their lab coat is blank— ditto the knees on their sweats but they ripped those out and replaced them anyway (the band on their more. professional. uniform for their financial department front desk position is pink)

4. An also gets funky w their uniform! They used to have a more vermillion-and-gold color scheme when they had the special little mascot guy band, but they swapped for grey-purple-black when they got promoted since that didn’t really go with the black management band.

5. Alonzo’s basic ass uniform for the sword-for-hire department vs the security department 😔 his ass is NOT interesting.

(Also in-universe blue is the mourning color because of St Miri but nobody really holds to that anymore and also it’s definitely more of a thing in the city on the other side of the lake)(so it’s not really relevant but his ass IS doomed by the narrative)

NONE. That’s part of his issue lmao he has NO hobbies and NO friends he goes to WORK and then he goes HOME. and sometimes he goes to hang out with his sister (while he’s on the clock)(bc sometimes his job is supposed to be Hunting Her For Sport) and/or his boyfriend (on his days off) but neither of those really count as hobbies? When he’s at home he washes his uniform (for his job) every day bc he has sensory issues and he does paperwork (for his job) but those are also not hobbies. HOWEVER. I do think playing some kind of racquetball as recreation would fix him.
