Wade undone, universal free school lunches are on the ballot, ongoing mass shootings, climate change, big pharma killing off people by withholding live saving drugs at ungodly market prices, the erasure of separation of church and state, AI surveillance being implemented to detect fare evasion for increasingly costly public transport services, the rise of fascim, proud boys showing up with military grade weapons at libraries and day care centers, the permitted attempted coup of the capital, labor union strikes happening all over the country, people dying of heat in Texas because evil landlords want to cut off cooling over an unpaid $51 utility bill, train derailments causing toxic waste spills, corruption within the highest court in the land, homelessness rates the highest its ever been, migrants and asylum seekers being kicked out of temporary housing, the cost of food, book bans, Miranda Rights no longer being stated, mayors deciding to no longer publicly disclose how many people are dying pre-trial in detention facilities, federal minimum wage still $7.25, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, oil pipeline constructions on native lands, something like 30-50% of the nation's drinking water contaminated with forever chemicals, the rich remaining untaxed, biden going back on his campaign promises to forgive all student debt, still no free universal healthcare, ICE deportations increasing under biden admin, the u.s. yet maintaining colonies, teens and women getting jail time for miscarriages and abortions, 100 companies globally responsible for 70 or 80-something percent of all CO2 emissions, we are living in a police state, diseases resurfacing after years with no cases due to rising temps, death penalty, public services being defunded to increase military and police spending budgets, and abusers suing victims for defamation cases in court so that they legally cannot talk about it, and setting a dangerous precedent in the process in my 2023 bingo card but here we god damn are.

I already made a post about Sophie the first fighter for the dying Austria in Elisabeth das Musical. The second fighter is Rudolph. Like Sophie his concerns are about the empire but his cure for the problems is the complete opposite. While she prescribes strictness and conservatism he wants reforms, freedom and modernity for the empire - but he has no one who really is on his site.

Rudolph like Sophie has a song which basically says shit has hit the fan and something needs to be done before it's to late. Like Sophie he does something morally questionable to change the situation. But he is so fucking lonely that death has to be his Co conspirator. And this continues. Rudolph has no one to talk to. There is no real sparring partner. Franz Joseph is denying reality and takes Rudolphs interventions extremely personal , Elisabeth is to caught up in her own feelings.He sees the problems and he has an idea what the solutions could be, but he has no power. But like Sophie he is right about what will happen to Austria if it continues on it's path. Like Sophie he laments the fact that his intentions and his way of showing love aren't understood. (And I'm not sure but I think belaria is a slower version of wenn ich dein Spiegel wär) They are like inversions of each other: Sophie is the mother who would do everything for her son and Rudolph is the son who would do everything for his mother. Both are held back by their concerns for the empire. But he is also a sadder version of Franz Joseph. He doesn't get a mother who convinces her husband to make way for the next generation (late Elisabeth is truly the worst version of herself). At last the only thing left for him to do is to die.

His death is the death of the future of the empire. (and i'm really honest: the feeling of despair and powerlessness in the face of rising fascim, nationalism and antisemitism and the frustration with conservatives who resist every reform that could change things for the better really resonates with me. )

🔪: Happy Sugar Life and Doki Doki Literature Club are nearly tied for me, with HSL coming out just a bit ahead because of the themes of the show being something truly horrifying and its strong themes also making a very clear statement on something in life, as all good Psychological Horror should.

🪓: I’d have to say disturbing movies because the good ones (the ones that rely on horrifying subjects rather than gore and straight up p*rn) always have very interesting themes that never get the chance to be commented on in regular media, and seperating the good from the bad in this area is endlessly fascimating I think.
