The cult that’s infiltrated NZ schools, campuses and churches

A religious sect based on the teachings of a South Korean “messiah” and convicted sex offender has quietly infiltrated university campuses, schools and mainstream churches in New Zealand. Rosel Labone investigates.

Mark* was in his second year of a psychology degree at Victoria University in Wellington when he met Crystal in 2007. She was vivacious and outgoing; the kind of person who seemed to know everyone. Crystal was class representative, and made herself available for study-related questions. So Mark plucked up the courage to say hello. They started corresponding by email. Crystal invited him to dinner, then asked him to join her Bible study group.

Two years later, Mark was deeply involved in a religious movement with its origins in Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church. Reflecting on how he was drawn into the sect, he talks first about the friendships he made, the sense of camaraderie. And, as the first New Zealander evangelised, he had status in the group. When Mark was asked to move to Auckland to help recruit new members, he had to move from accommodation he shared with other sect members to stay with “secular relatives”.

“I woke up one Sunday morning at my relatives’ and just felt burnt out. I decided not to go to church that day. Then I skipped the next service. I think if I’d gone back to Wellington, I might still be involved because I’d have been surrounded by members and would have been indoctrinated every day,” he says.

“Looking back, I feel I was spiritually violated. I lost all trust in religion and I’ve never been able to go back to church – any church – since.”

Providence church (also known as Jesus Morning Star) is an offshoot of Moon’s “messianic” movement that has surfaced in New Zealand. Led by Jeong Myeong-seok, its beliefs – among them, that sexual intercourse with the Messiah (Jeong) allegedly cleanses Original Sin – can be traced back to Moon.

Former “Moonie” Jeong Myeong-seok was paroled from South Korea’s Daejeon prison in February this year, having served nine years for raping and molesting his followers.

Sam* was a professional athlete when his best friend died in a car accident. In 2009, he was looking for something to fill the void after losing a couple of years “cruising through life”. Like Mark, he was first invited to dinner by a woman. She then asked him to join her at a church service in Wellington’s Cuba St.

For both young men, these innocent-sounding gatherings were the start of recruitment into Providence – also known as Jesus Morning Star and Christian Gospel Mission – led by former “Moonie” Jeong Myeong-seok.

Providence was founded in 1978 by Korean-born Jeong, now 73, known by members as “Joshua”. South Korea remains its stronghold, where it claims to have more than 100,000 followers. It also boasts of having more than 10,000 followers worldwide, including small but growing memberships in both New Zealand and Australia.

In 1999, following an investigation by South Korea broadcaster SBS that included allegations of rape, Jeong fled the country. A string of accusations followed and rape charges were filed against him in 2001. Alleged victims in Japan claimed he would initiate contact with women under the guise of performing “health checks”, then sexually assault them. In Taiwan, former Providence members told police they were ordered to have sex with Jeong to “wipe away their sins”.

In May 2007, after eight years on the run, Jeong was arrested in Beijing by Chinese police. He was extradited to Korea and sentenced to six years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of raping four female members of the sect. The sentence was extended on appeal to 10 years. Jeong was paroled from Daejeon prison on February 18 this year; he will be monitored via an electronic ankle bracelet for seven years.

New Dunedin group targeting students labelled as a ‘cult’

Alarm over a group that’s been set up in Dunedin which is being called a cult that aggressively targets students.

A volunteer group, Save the Earth from A to Z, has the same members, and may be a rebranding exercise, of the controversial South Korean-based Elohim Bible Academy, aka Providence, led by Jeong Myeong-seok.

Massey University religion professor, Peter Lineham says it’s been active in Auckland in the last few years, and around the world.

He told Mike Hosking the disturbing sect pushes people strongly to join.

“In essence, it’s a closed sect that tries to hook people in, has absolute boundaries so it’s almost impossible to leave, and takes over a person’s life almost entirely.”

Save the Earth from A to Z denies this, and says it’s all a misunderstanding.

ANIMAL EVACUATIONS

The Del Mar Fairgrounds and the San Diego Polo Fields in Del Mar are open for large animal evacuations. After dark, all evacuations will be sent to the fairgrounds.

People bringing animals are asked to bring hay, halters and buckets if possible.

People who need assistance evacuating large animals should call the county's Department of Animal Service's 24-hour emergency dispatch at (619) 236-2341 or the San Diego Humane Society at (619) 243-3466.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds Animal Evacuation Center is currently fully staffed with volunteers but a spokeswoman for the center said people who wish to volunteer on Friday can show up beginning at 6 a.m.

In addition, they are asking for donations of feed and bedding (shavings, etc) for the animals that are being sheltered from the fire (more than 100 have been brought in on Thursday).

People making donations or seeking to house their livestock at the center are asked to enter the East Stable Gate, which is the first gate off of Jimmy Durante Boulevard. For more information on how to volunteer visit

666 So Fresh: Chapter 11

Biblical shit. The creation of sin. Blah, blah, blah. They never really go into detail about that stuff, huh? That or I just didn’t pay much attention in church when I was a kid. Anyways, I’m not important but also very important. Everywhere if you like or nowhere at all. Call me Mara, little colts.

Anyways, I’ll tell you how each Sin came to be and what it means to be a Sin or have a Vice. It’s more literal than you think. Demons are borne of sin, and because every human does it in one way or another, there are a lot of Demons. This is also why they’re called Hell Spawn because all demons are borne in Hell and reside there unless their Sin calls them towards somewhere else...like the surface world. Hehe

Humans are so easily food.

When a human sins, whether or not they repent, a demon comes out of it and gets assigned a level. The popular seven or maybe even Melancholy. A lot of those are youthful wrecks or people who stood a chance but never took it and so a demon claimed their heart with ease. So if the sinner repents, the Sin is small but still gets sent here. What a Sin does is claim a part of some human’s heart. If the Sin is repeated, then that human becomes a demon. Those are mostly rich folk and the people you see on TV. Yeah, I said it, some of your favorite celebrities are demons.

Hell Spawn are bound to their Sin, yes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do good things. Lots of Vanity celebs give to charity to be praised even though they say it’s out of the goodness of their hearts. Even regular Spawn get “Hearts” which are just their Sin sustaining their physical form, whatever they choose.

Like this beautiful boy here, Yoongi. Just the cutest. I’ve been keeping my eye on him for a while. His heart was born of some human klepto who “tried” to get better and died while breaking and entering into some rando superstar’s home. So you see? He really can’t help what he does. Have some pity on his poor wittle sowl. Hehe.

Police Chief Bang walked in and told Namjoon to stand up and meet his new partner. It was a tall and lanky man standing next to the chief. Broad shoulders and a handsome face.

“Detective Namjoon, meet Detective Seokjin. He just graduated in the top 10 of the police academy.”

The two gave each other a firm handshake.

Namjoon spoke, “With all due respect, sir, Detective SB is expected to survive.”

“Yes, but he wants to retire. Also, Seokjin has a thing for demons like you. He’s a hard worked. You two should make a perfect pair.”

Chief Bang went off to go attend to his own business, leaving the two men alone. They silently sized each other up. Namjoon was more curious about this unassuming and shy man who was now his partner after the secondary introduction.

Jin spoke, “So, you like demons? Chief wouldn’t stop talking about it on the way over.”

“I don’t like them, per say, just curious about them. Every few years I do dep research into something. There’s so much about angels and devils, so many interpretations that I’ve been on it for a while? And you?”

Jin shrugged, “Grew up believing in them, and I know they’re real. I know it’s my duty to protect humanity from their influence and evil deeds.”

“So is that why you became a cop?”

“That’s all your doing, Namjoon. All your good police work just compelled me to work by your side.”

He scratched the back of his head, “Me, really? I’m just doing my job. Couldn’t have done it without my partner...having my back.” The younger man was so upset at himself.

Jin put his hand on Namjoon’s back. His partner SB had gotten hurt having his back during their last case. Namjoon should’ve noticed the trip wire. Somehow Jin’s slight touch lightened his guilt just a little bit. There was nothing he could’ve done. Due to his new situation of having an injured partner, he’d been given pats and touches at least 12 times a day. None ever seemed to help until now.

“Thanks, Seokjin.”

“Just Jin is fine.” He gave a soft smile, leaving his hand there for half a moment more.

Namjoon returned his smile, “You’re going to be my new partner, huh? Good. Wouldn’t want anyone else.”

Jin felt Namjoon’s concerned hand on his shoulder, “Look who’s come to complain.”

It was the mother and father of the frat boy who had been mysteriously mauled in his own bedroom. They didn’t seem happy, but they had to know that the police were doing everything they could do find out who killed their son...with no leads of any kind.

“Don’t make assumptions. They could be here--”

“Trash! All of you!” The father spat, and the mother nodded.

Namjoon gave his partner a look, “Like I said.” He then went to go see the family. “Mr. Han, what can I do for you?

“How come you useless as police men aren’t out there looking for who killed my song? It’s been--”

The older cop watched from the side as his partner did his best to diffuse the situation. Parents who lost a child were going to be emotional, sometimes volatile. Although they weren’t showing kindness, to give them patience and understanding would work better for everyone. No matter how annoying.

Jin got a phone call and looked for a notepad, “Hello, Seoul Police Station.”

Their voice was deep, but a bit timid, “Uh, yes, hello. I’m Chwe Hansol, one of the brothers at the murder frat. We’re wondering when we can use the house again for parties. We’ve had to cancel some huge events and push back a lot because cops are crawling.”

“I’ll tell them to hurry up. No promises, but I’m gonna see if you can be up and running this Friday, ok?”

“Thanks, man. Who am I speaking to? Y’know, just in case I gotta call back. Also, there’s something I think you guys overlooked.”

Jin told his name and gave a number as Namjoon returned. The family seemed sated, but that didn’t stop him from sighing as he slumped into his chair.

“Why do the rich feel so entitled? We’re stretched in every direction, and we have no leads. We can’t work without a lead!” He grumbled.

“Thank you.” Jin hung up. “I think we got one. Do you know that teddy bears can have cameras put into them?”

Jungkook sat on his bed eating chips and waiting for his games to update. He looked through Instagram and Twitter. Zula’s accounts specifically. He thought about what his brother said an decided to DM her.

Jungkook sighed, relieved that Zula didn’t hate him anymore. A smile even played on his face as he typed out his next message, adding an emoji of his own.

In all honesty, he was sad that she was taken. Her Insta photos were mostly of her holding hands with that guy with a mullet. Sometimes that other guy would be holding her too. Were they really dating? If so, which one? He decided not to ask for the sake of his own heart.

She obviously didn’t share his enthusiasm at getting to speak with each other. Jungkook was glad he had talked to her, though. He knew how Zula thought of him at least. A fanboy of sorts, nothing too special. At least she knew it was him. That was something.

“So, we finally have something.” Namjoon said, wincing at the screen.

Jin was throwing up in a nearby waste basket, “I hate demons!” He gasped. “They always make everything so gruesome.”

He wiped his mouth and looked at the screen again. The footage from the teddy bear cam clearly showed the dead frat boy getting mauled by a girl who had shapeshifted into a demon. Her body was mostly red and it was all covered with black scales. Her hand had black claws which matched the black horns sprouting from her head. Namjoon knew the girl.

It was Zula.

She had killed the man, even tried to get rid of the evidence once she returned to her human form. Jin kept going on and on about how violent demons were and how evil they were.

“They just kill and leave their messes, feeling no remorse!”

“She’s not like that. She obviously feels remorse...something once she turns human again. Rewind a bit.”

The AV detective rewinded the video until she was told to stop. It was at the moment all traces of demon Zula were gone, and she looked like if she had just woken up from a trance. She stares at the blood on her hands in fear.

Namjoon pointed at the screen, “See, she had no idea what just happened. The blood is a surprise and she starts panicking. His unwanted advances made her snap. It’s like what Jungkook did--”

“That could’ve been your brother, and you’re so ok with it?”

“She didn’t want their affections. This kid tried to rape her!” He raised his voice for the 5th time in all the years they’d been partners. “She fought back.”

“She’s a demon!” Jin stated and it explained his unwavering stance on this matter.

This is why they avoided the topic. Jin believed demons could only be evil and do wrong. Sin was their life and they’d do anything to do it. Namjoon saw them as mostly harmless, but would do almost anything to sin. If not, there’d be more strife in the world. Why else did that other one stop her from killing his brother?

It was deathly silent.

“What should I do with the footage?” The AV detective asked, slightly hesitant to say anything.

Jin spoke up, somewhat ignoring the second human, “We get word out that we need to bring her in.”

“For questioning.” Namjoon said.

He rolled his eyes, “And we get the public to help us find her. We can’t expose demons or there will be mass panic, so just give us the part with her cleaning up and stuff. When will it be done?”

“Thirty minutes, tops. And I won’t say a word to anyone about what I saw.”

With a nod, the men left the room. They never apologized after such topics because nothing changed, but they would for their temper. Namjoon went first, but only by a second.

“I’m sorry.”

Then they paused.

Jin sighed, “We’re gonna be fighting a lot about this one, aren’t we?”

“Probably. The one thing we agreed not to talk about is becoming the forefront of our investigation.”

“Then let me say this now.” The older man took on a kinder tone. “No matter how heated things get, you’re my partner, and I won’t stop caring about you.”

Namjoon nodded, “Same here.”

They then knocked on Chief Bang’s door to show him the original footage and get his approval on their plan.

MANILA -- Senator Francis Tolentino on Wednesday urged concerned government agencies to give Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs)/Indigenous Peoples (IPs) fair chance to get hired and be a part of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“The members of the ICCs/IPs are overlooked and sometimes discriminated upon, and not given the chance to serve, protect and defend the country simply because of their culture. It is the expressed policy of the State to promote the rights of ICCs/IPs in formulating policies for the development of the nation,” Tolentino said during the hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs.

“It is high-time to recognize and give the IPs a fair chance to work for the country,” he added.

Tolentino made the call as the Senate panel tackled the proposed bills seeking to repeal the height requirements for applicants to the PNP, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP); and to increase the quota requirement for female PNP officers.

The committee also discussed a Senate resolution on the status of the PNP regular recruitment program.

He cited Senate Bill 405, otherwise known as the “Katutubong Tagapagtanggol Act of 2019,” which he filed "in response to the existing and continuing discrimination against IPs due to their culture and certain physical factors."

SB 405 aims to accommodate ICC/IP members by providing a proportionate recruitment share specially allocated for them in the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) and the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA).

Under the proposed measure, the PMA and the PNPA are mandated to admit and enlist members of ICCs/IPs into their academic program. At least 10 percent of the new cadets shall belong to ICCs/IPs.

“The bill aims to exempt IPs from height, body mass index and general point average as part of the admission requirements. Tattoos, piercing and physical deformities as disqualifications will be waived as well, provided that the features were brought about by their culture, customs and traditions,” Tolentino said.

The bill also gives protection to IPs from any forms of discrimination or slurs, with dismissal from the service being the highest form of penalty to violators.

Under SB 405, any person, public official or employee who discriminates, in any manner, members of the ICCs/IPs, by reason of their membership in the ICCs/IPs, shall immediately be subjected to the proper disciplinary action or proceedings of the service.

Willful failure, refusal or negligence by the disciplining authority in the initiation, investigation and disposal of disciplinary proceedings due to violations of this Act shall be a cause for dismissal from the service of the disciplining authority.

“The culture must be celebrated, brought into the light and integrated into society for it is something that brings honor and pride to the country,” Tolentino said. (PNA) ---- (Photo of Tolentino)

Senate begins Electoral Act amendment

The Senate on Tuesday began consideration of a bill to amend Nigeria’s Electoral Act. The Bill which scaled Second Reading is For an Act to Amend the Electoral Act (No.6), 2010. According to the Sponsors, Senators Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta Central) and Abubakar Kyari (APC, Borno North), the bill which has 26 clauses seeks to amend the Electoral Act to strengthen and protect Nigeria’s democracy, as well as “cure specific mischiefs plaguing our (Nigeria’s) elections and electoral processes." Leading the debate on the bill, Omo-Agege said though the process under the eighth Senate was fraught with mutual suspicions and bitterness, electoral reform for the ninth National Assembly remains a priority in its legislative agenda. The Deputy Senate President added that the Bill to amend the Electoral Act seeks to enact a new Section 87 on the Nomination of Candidates by Parties for Elections by prescribing maximum fees payable by aspirants and restricting nomination criteria strictly to relevant provisions. The bill, according to him, also seeks to make clarification under Section 38(1)(a) of the principal Act which states that “a person shall be deemed to be qualified for an elective office and his election shall not be questioned on grounds of qualification if, with respect to the particular election in question, he meets the applicable requirements of Sections 65, 107, 137 or 182 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999”. The amendment to the Electoral Act will also provide sanctions for giving false information for purpose of registering a political party and ensure that failure by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and others to comply with any provision of the Act carries clear and adequate sanctions. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, after consideration of the bill, referred same to the Committee on INEC for further legislative work. Meanwhile, a total of ten bills scaled first reading during plenary on Wednesday. The bills are: Federal Polytechnic Akpabuyo, Cross River State (Est.) Bill, 2019 (SB. 177) by Senator Bassey Gershom Henry (Cross River South); Electoral Act No.6 2010 (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (SB. 179) by Senator Moro Patrick Abba (Benue South); Trade Mark Act CAP T13 LFN 2004 (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill, 2019 (SB.180) by Senator Shettima Kashim (Borno Central), and Police Act CAP P19 LFN 2004 (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill, 2019 (SB. 181) by Senator Jika Dauda (Bauchi Central). Other bills are: Police Academy (Est.) Bill, 2019 (SB. 182) by Senator Jika Dauda Haliru (Bauchi Central); Investment and Security Act CAP 124 LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2019 (SB. 183) by Senator Amosun Ibikunle Oyelaja (Ogun Central); 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) Bill, 2019 (SB. 184) by Senator Ekwunife Uche Lilian (Anambra Central).
