The maneuvers carried out on the Caribbean coast are carried out within the scope of Operation Lightning VII, an exercise carried out since 2014 with different air forces.

The Colombian Air Force, FAC is holding the seventh edition of the Lightning Operational Exercise VII, along with aircraft of the U.S. National Air Guard (ANG) and the U.S. Air Force (USAF).

The United States sent its F-16C/D fighters from the 169th South Carolina National Air Guard (SCANG) Fighter Wing and the KC-135 refueling aircraft from the 93rd U.S. Air Force Air Force Air Refueling Aircraft. Colombia is operating in the exercise for the penultimate time with its IAI Kfir combat jets, in addition to the EMB-314 Super Tucano light attack aircraft.

The objective of the exercise is to "train techniques, tactics and procedures, as well as to strengthen interoperability," assured the FAC in a statement in which it stressed that it "included countries such as Chile and French Guiana, which participate as observers in the exercise."

The FAC pointed out that this operational exercise is part of the international training calendar of the service and is carried out in Colombian airspace.

The Colombian military conducts the Lightning Operational Exercise annually since 2014 and has participants and observers from different air forces.

"In 2018 and 2019, the National Air Guard and the United States Air Force participated in the exercise; and then, in 2020, the French Air Force joined as an observer," the institution said.

The Colombian Air Force stated that it continuously seeks the formation of its crews, "in order to strengthen distinctive capabilities that allow it to fulfill the constitutional mission of ensuring the defense of sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, constitutional order, and contribute to the purposes of the State".

The Kfir jet fleet is expected to reach the end of its useful life in 2023 and the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, referred to the eventual acquisition of a new fleet "as an issue that is being evaluated regarding the capacities of federal funds in the equipment".

Velásquez clarified that not only the Kfir aircraft fleet would be renewed, but also that a general evaluation of all the equipment of the Colombian Air Force would be taken into account. It should be noted that the governments of former presidents Juan Manuel Santos and Iván Duque did not advance with the purchase of new aircraft due to the high costs they represented in the national budget.

Kfir aircraft are used in military bombings against illegal structures and guerrilla camps. However, the Minister of Defense also indicated a few days ago that these operations are suspended whenever there are minors involved or high risk to civilians.
