February 2, 2021: Pretty Woman (Review)
Tumblr media
Before I jump right into this review, I would like to say something about this movie: it’s timeless, while not aging super well for a couple of reasons. Those reasons make this film a tad problematic, and they are as follows, at least according to me:
Prostitution: Look, in NO WAY can I claim to be an expert, or very knowledgeable on culture in the world of sex workers, duh. But, given changing opinions in this during the past three decades since this film came out, this is bound to seem a little dated. Still, some credit for Edward not being...terribly condescending to her throughout this movie. Again, this is just something I’m noting. If anyone with more expertise knows more about how sex workers feel about this film, hit me up; I’m quite curious.
Edward: Speaking of Edward, though, I know that his character came off at the time as similar to Gordon Gekko from Wall Street (can’t confirm, never seen it), and stereotypical businessman characters (and actual people) from the time, and that he was probably considered quite suave and cool at that time. And don’t get me wrong, Edward is...fine...but living in 2021, and in the current political climate in America...dude comes off like a STRAIGHT sociopath throughout this movie. Yeah, no, less Prince Charming, more Prince Harming. I saw somebody describe him as a romantic Patrick Bateman, and GODDAMN does that resonate. That Zodiac Killer joke from the Recap? That was only slightly kidding, real talk.
Tumblr media
I’m sure there are more (especially in terms of gender politics and sexism, but I AM NOT QUALIFIED ENOUGH FOR THAT), but these are the ones that came to me during the watching of the film. Anyway, shall we continue? Because I really DID like this movie, despite some problems with it. Let’s get the Review started!
Review
Tumblr media
Cast and Acting: 9/10
Edward might be a sociopath, but I don’t lame Richard Gere for that at all. He works through the character to create some legit emotional development for him, and I appreciate it quite a bit. But he’s not the draw here. First, let’s talk about the supporting cast here. Yes, really.  Héctor Elizondo, a Garry Marshall regular, IS A GOD in this movie. I love Barney so much, you have no idea. Laura San Giacomo is a quirky best friend, and I love her. Ralph Bellamy plays a very sweet man in David Morse (even if I disagree with his business). And finally, Jason Alexnder’s Phil Stuckey is IMPRESSIVELY slimy, if a little much at times. Still, he made a good villain in a film that didn’t necessarily need one.
But you all know. You know who takes the entire show here, I know you do. That 9 up there? Sure, the supporting cast carries about 2 of those points, and Gere has one...but JULIA FRIGGIN’ ROBERTS, ACTRESS QUEEN OF ROMANCIA is the star and glue of this movie! She’s perfect, she’s charming, she’s quirky, and she’s absolutely fantastic. Holy shit, I understand solely from this movie, why Julia Roberts became as much of a star as she is.
Tumblr media
Plot and Writing: 8/10
Roger Ebert called this a good take on the Pygmalion and Cinderella formulas, both of which the movie heartily acknowledges. And, uh...yeah, it’s a legitimately good take on those formulae, while still being its own unique film, and it’s getting credit for that! It’s interesting to me that J.F. Lawton is the writer, because he...he didn’t do any great things after this one. Under Siege, maybe. Blankman, maybe. I haven’t seen either, so I can’t comment. However, he also wrote Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. Um. What. Pardon me. Wut. Anyway, plot’s good, character development is apparent through the writing and story, and the only real problem I have is that the time scale is literally a week. And it’s a fairy tale, yeah, and the cheesy nature of some of it definitely shows that. So, not perfect, but still good and unique!
Tumblr media
Directing and Cinematography: 7/10
Garry Marshall, former advisor of the land of Romancia...yeah, you did alright. Nothing over-the-top amazing, but not bad by any means. It’s good, but it’s an average kind of good. Same goes for Charles Minsky’s cinematography, which is quite good, but never really breathtaking to me. Good, just not necessarily a cinematic masterpiece.
Tumblr media
Production and Art Design: 8/10
The dichotomy between Vivian’s street world and Edward’s high-society world is very well visually portrayed, I gotta say. Most of that isn’t exactly iconically distinctive, but it’s still good. I say MOST of it because, well...Julia Roberts, man. The outfits she’s given in this movie are insanely iconic, even to this day, and they really pick up during the second half of the film. The polo dress, the Rodeo drive dress, the GODDAMN RED OPERA DRESS! It’s all gorgeous, and I genuinely love it all. But one wardrobe does not a movie make. Hence, it’s not perfect, but it’s still up there.
Tumblr media
Music and Editing: 7/10
How goes it, James Newton Howard? This won’t be the last time I see you this year, I’m sure. And your score here is great! ANd I don’t remember it...at all! Literally, all of that music is drowned out for me by Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman.” By the way, DID NOT REALIZE that that wasn’t Elvis Presley, nor did my girlfriend. You learn something every day. But anyway, here’s the deal: this film is Dirty Dancing in reverse, in terms of music. And slightly worse than that. A lot of pop songs are peppered throughout this movie, and they’re all famous and good...but they aren’t really tied to this movie much, outside of “Pretty Woman.” But they’re mostly fitting with the times presented in the movie, unlike some of Dirty Dancing’s soundtrack. Not as iconic, but better fitting with the atmosphere. There you have it.
Tumblr media
I mean, yeah, a LOT, even. At least 78% approval from me!
Pretty Woman is a cheesy yet heartfelt fairy tale of a movie, and it’s sweet all throughout. Problematic or not, I understand how this film but a crown on the heads of the King and Queen of Romancia. ALL HAIL KING GERE AND QUEEN ROBERTS!
But wait...on the horizon. A rival, and far larger nation, is arming its people, led by a fearsome warrior Queen, and one of her most faithful Kings. The Holy Romance Empire is on the march, and it wants blood. Until then...they will get no sleep.

doing laundry is absolutely one of your least favourite things in the world beside soggy socks
so you’re in a bad mood as soon as you walk into the campus launderette to say the least
the launderette is empty bar one dude you’d seen around the global technics centre
if you remember rightly he’s a European studies major
odd choice but you do you and all that
now you’re not weird or anything but you have a preference on what type of washing machine you use
I know I know kind of unorthodox
but the old washing machines take 30 mins longer so you’d prefer a newer one
unfortunately the only one left is directly next to this familiar-faced stranger and his laundry
your better judgement is telling you no but your impatience is telling you yes
and so you dump your laundry onto the floor next to the stranger and his and start sorting through for all your whites
your piles mingle a tad as they overlap beside each other like Venn diagrams of assorted underwear and other garments
his consisting of only whites
yours a jumbled mess since you had to wash all of your stuff
in sync you both pick up your washing and put it into the machine
you catch his dark wide eyes as you both straighten up and he lets out an awkward low-voiced giggle
your cheeks immediately flush pink and a bashful smile creeps up to your lips
“you’re from the global centre, right?”
you ask testing the waters
“I am, I’m a European studies major, my name’s Jungkook. I recognise you, you’re in linguistics class right?”
“Yeah, I’m a linguistics major so you’ll mostly see me there, it’s nice to meet you Jungkook”
you say with a smile as your hands fidget with the door handle of the washing machine
“It’s nice to meet you too, I thought I recognised you from somewhere, but it’s because I see you sometimes when I have to do extra credit European language projects. What’s your name?”
he says tilting his head like a curious puppy
“its ______”
you say as you bow to him politely
“Can I ask you something? I have to do a project on European languages and their similarities to others. The professor wants us to speak to outsiders for references so would I be able to collab on a project with you sometime in the future, if it’s not too much to ask?”
he averts his eyes from yours and blushes lightly
“Oh yeah sure, that’s no issue! It’ll be beneficial to me too because the linguistics portion of the course is coming up soon, so it’s a great idea.”
you beam at him
“Could I get your number?”
their is a pause that feels like an eternity between your next words and his last
the cause of this is your mind being far too focused on his wavy dark hair and his clear doe eyes
you snap out of your daze
“yeah totally, one sec”
you pull out your phone from your backpack on top of the washing machine and input his contact name and number as he reads it out
“Thanks for that, it’ll be a big help, let me know when you want to link up” he replies
and with that you had his number and continued on with your washing

Jungkook ༄ : not to be accusatory but do you happen to own a pair of RED socks?
You: yes, why do you ask??
Jungkook ༄ : well ALL of my washing seems to be PINK!!
You: just because I own a pair of red socks doesn’t mean it was me 😠
Jungkook ༄ : yes but you were the only one in the launderette when I was there,,
Jungkook ༄ : smh gonna be turning up to class in pink tshirts and and socks, everyone be thinking ive made a new fashion choices when it’s really just because SOMEONE can’t keep their clothes separate from others B/
You: 1) it’s not my fault that my socks decided to migrate to new lands

You: 3) did you really use a sunglasses sad face emoticon lol
Jungkook ༄ : girl u owe me big time for all these clothes you ruined 😩
Jungkook ༄ : also im not scared of pink I just dont want to be wearing pink shirts to all of my formal events for the next ten years
Jungkook ༄ : and yes im sWaG so my emoticons are sWaG duh
You : ruined? ruINED? RUINED? I did not ruin anything, I simply spiced up your wardrobe boo x
You : oh no he’s a 2012 hype beast 🤦🏻‍♀️
Jungkook ༄ : how dare you call me something so sacreligious as a hypebeast!!
Jungkook ༄ : I am gucci not channel thank you very much
Jungkook ༄ : anyways I gtg write a report, speak soon red socks
Seen ✓
Tumblr media
Jungkook was in fact not writing a report
he was planning revenge dun dun dun~~~
his plan was to do the exact same thing you had done to him
but he had to be cunning about it
and so the week went on
he was scrolling through twt when he received a new follower
it was the one and only @_______
and lo and behold their last tweet was “tysm Seokjin oppa for buying me a personal washing machine,, now I can do my most hated thing but at home!!”
hehehe
an idea sprung into kookie’s head
he didn’t have to try and spike your washing at the launderette
he could do it in a place you’d never suspect,, your home
now he only had to find out where you lived
just stalkerish tingz
he had to be lowkey about this
so he decided to ask his best mate and social butterfly of a friend Taehyung whether he knew you
and of course he did lol
“Hell yeah I know where she lives, she had the best party of the whole term, Jimin was so drunk he started chatting himself up in the mirror”
“Damn that sounds like a good time, probs should start going to these parties you invite me to”
“defo should, anyways I’ll tell u as long as you promise not to spread the information or use it for pervy or questionable reasons”
“I promise not to spread it or use it for pervy or questionable reasons”
he replies in monotone voice and his hand on his chest like an oath
and so that was how he acquired your address
simple enough really
and so that’s the events that lead him to be crawling through your dorm window however paused like a deer in headlights at the questionable sounds coming from the room across
he was squatted on the window ledge like spider man, red sock in hand and hood up
it was 9:00pm and your university apartment was supposed to be empty at this time
you had your class on now but he hadn’t accounted for your roommate
hence why he had frozen at the unsavoury sounds echoing round the apartment
low moans and grunts emanated from the room across
dEsGöStEn
he had to get to the kitchen without alerting the dusk time love makers
he could do it if the floor plan was the same as his apartment block and he bet his reputation on that
if he got caught he’d never hear the end of it from his mates and your roommate might even call the campus police if they were spooked enough
and so he clambered through your bedroom window and onto your bed underneath
unmade bed might he add but what did he expect from a uni student
with wide eyes he listened for any noise of suspecting roommates and examined your room
the desk was littered with papers and an oversized lava lamp stood stout in the corner of the room
a lacy bra was hung over your wardrobe handle
he shoved away the idea of you wearing it and continued with his night time plot
slowly and stealthily he crept through the halls of the apartment and out to the kitchen
on the maiden was already a neatly hung load of whites
he’d have to assume it was yours otherwise he’d have to go back to your room to get laundry
he bundled up the clothes and shoved them in the washing machine with the incriminating red sock he’d brought and set it to economy spin
round and round it spun, getting progressively louder as it went
he had to get out of there asap
tip-toeing as he went past the questionable lewd noises, he finally made it to your bedroom
he made one last check to see if he’d left any damage in your room
his eyes fell upon that same bra
damn his manhood making him think predictably
he shoved the thought away and departed

You: what in the hell did you do to my washing!!!?!!!
You: unless it was a ghost it HAD TO BE YOU JEON 🤬
Jungkook ༄ : wym I don’t even know where you live 😑
Jungkook ༄ : what’ve you done now?
You: IT HAS TO BE YOU!! SOMEONE FRIGGIN TURNED MY WASHING PINK AND I PROMISE YOU IT WASNT ME
Jungkook ༄ : how would i do that?? I don’t have like magic clothes dyeing skills boo
You: I SWEAR it was you!!
You: what do you want to bet it was u
Jungkook ༄ : I won’t bet anything I’m poor
You: that means you did it!
Jungkook ༄ : if you come with me to Taehyung’s party tomorrow I’ll tell u everything
Jungkook ༄ : but only if you go, that’s the terms of agreement
You: that’s all the incriminating evidence I need!! you basically just admitted to it you know?
You: however for reasons sake I will attend 👀
Jungkook ༄ : see you then red socks x
You: I suppose u will x
Tumblr media
time passed quickly and soon it was Taehyung’s party
You’d known Taehyung since middle school however since starting college you hadn’t seen much of him
schedules clashed often so the only time you got to see him was at a good party
nothing wrong with that, you just probably haven’t had a completely sober conversation with him in 2 years
he’s good fun, Taehyung, so you hoped Jungkook wasn’t as much as a killjoy as he’d been this week
his little antics (that you’d yet to figure out) had caused your work uniform to turn bright pink
and thus the ‘pink princess’ nickname at work began
you felt like sharpay, everyone in white, but you pink
you’d quite like to knock Jungkook down a peg after that
and so you made your way to the infamous Taehyung’s party
he welcomed you as you entered the large door of his fraternity house
behind his head of black curls you could see the mess that is a raging college party
young people, at assumably different levels of intoxication, were everywhere
some were stood all the way up the expanse of the stairs even
you looked around and spotted a familiar brunette in the kitchen sat on the large marble counter tops
he’s chatting to some pink haired girl beside him
you stalk up to him like a woman on a mission and jokingly (a little too hard for jokingly) push his shoulders with both hands
he immediately snaps his head round to face you and his eyes widen with shock
“I have a bone to pick with you.” you say as stern as you can
you grab hold a fistful of his black T-shirt and drag him into a side room
once you enter only then do you realise it’s a laundry room
how fitting 👀
you say “Come on, tell me how you did it.” as you cross your arms and glare at him
“Did what?”
“you know what I mean, don’t play dumb with me, how did you turn all of my washing pink, and might I add, my work uniform too!”
“Ohhh that, it was far too easy. You really should keep your windows locked when you’re out.” he says as he laughs, like the whole thing is amusing
“So you’re telling me you broke into my apartment?! How did u know where I live??”
at this point you’re pacing around the room, arms flailing wide at the sudden discovery
“Well, I may or may not have asked Taehyung, and he told me, and then I entered, I did not break into your apartment. Anyway, I didn’t touch anything but the washing machine and I had the lovely experience of being serenaded by your roommate’s sex symphony.”
he made a step forward towards you, almost in a challenging way
“Oh I’ll be having harsh words with him later...” you say as you uncross your arms and put them on your hips.
you stand thinking for a second before it sinks in
“Wait.. what did you hear? You said sex symphony, right?”
“Uh yeah, your roommate was proper going at it with someone. At least he had the decency to do it whilst you were out, I guess.” He chuckled
“Oh my days, that means Hobi must’ve had Hyerim round! Go him I guess, but also ewww”
“Anyways we’ve bounced around the issue enough here, you ruined my clothes and broke into my apartment!” you exclaim backing up against the wall
Jungkook starts to close the gap between you two
“So? What’re you going to do about?”
your back pressed flush with the wall, you start to realise how close he really is
you can see the small freckles that dot the bridge of his nose, the thick eyelashes that frame his eyelids, the totally sinful look in his eyes
like this you start to realise how shockingly handsome he is
no wonder he has a slight reputation in class
you had no idea why he was looking at you this way
“I-I’ll call campus security..” You begin
“Will you really now?” he retorts as he slams his hand into the wall behind you, caging you in
“I w-will” a whisper that falls on deaf ears
before you even register, his lips have attached themselves to yours and you feel his thumb under your jaw
he works his lips against yours and you feel your legs start to tremble
he tastes sweet and robust, like syrup on your tastebuds
you mould into his kiss and then break away, panting for air, wanting more
everything felt so wrong, yet so right at the same time
it was as if your current issue had melted away and the only thing you could focus on was the way he looked at you and how his soft lips felt against yours
“J-Jungkook? What’re we doing?” you asked, a giggle leaving you
you rest your head against chest, clasping at his tshirt
“I couldn’t resist, you’re so hot when you’re angry”
he places a firm kiss against your cheek, takes your hand in his, and leads you back to the party
you couldn’t believe you’d just done that, let him kiss you so easily
but once you let him, it felt so right, like it was supposed to be that way, him lapping you up like a parched man to water
it felt so natural to have his arm round your waist like it was now
the pair of you approached Taehyung, still clutched together
“What happened to you two? I heard _____ went off on one and then you both were missing for ages. And now you both show up all over each other... what went down 👀”
“Well you know, hate and love are both forms of passion.” Jungkook says with a smirk
“excuse me? Assuming I love you? I let you kiss me once and you say it’s love? I’ll show you love” you retort
“Oooh she’s feisty; so you kissed? Damn, things’re moving quickly for you two, one minute Jungkook’s asking me for your address, the next you’re sucking each other’s faces off. I’m one of hell of a wing man, if I do say so myself.”
Taehyung flips an imaginary lock of hair out of his way like a sassy high school cheerleader
You both just laugh, at Taehyung, and because of how crazy it is,
It’s almost like you didn’t know you liked him like that until it smacked you in the face
“Do you want a drink? A beer?” Jungkook asks pouring himself a glass of punch
“That’d be great, thank you” you reply as you realise how much more time you want to spend with this annoying but totally handsome dork of a boy

Evelyn sighed. She wasn’t sure when time had crept up on her so stealthily, so steadily. It seemed like only yesterday that she and Frank were wrangling the kids in the back of the old Ford wagon, driving across several states to see the Grand Canyon. Now Frank was gone and the kids had kids of their own, and she could no longer remember the route from the house she’d lived in for fifty years to the supermarket around the corner, where she’d shopped for as long a time.
The Pines boasted a wide lawn, backed up by seven acres of woodland, and a glassed-in deck overlooking it all. Deer and birds and squirrels were all regular visitors, with the occasional fox. The residents would crowd around the windows in the winter and enjoy the sun in the warmer months, wheelchairs locked in place.
Evelyn couldn’t remember when she’d gotten this old.
The shrill ringing of the phone pulled her from her ruminations, and she pulled herself slowly from her chair by the window to amble slowly to the desk.
“Hello?”
“Good afternoon, Ma’am. How are you today?”
The young man on the other end of the line had a pleasant, rolling voice, she thought as she answered his polite query. He reminded her of her eldest grandson, although it was rare that Patrick ever lifted his head from that confangled smartphone long enough to have a conversation, on the occasions he visited with his mother and sister.
“And who am I speaking with? May I have your name?”
She was smart enough to be weary. Time might have stolen her youth, her Frank, her ability to get around on her own, but it hadn’t stolen her wits, Evelyn thought proudly. She answered with her first name only, telling the young man flat out that she wasn’t giving him her social security number or credit card card information.
“Evelyn, I’m not interested in any of that,” he laughed in his silvery voice. “I’m merely calling from a quality control center, ensuring that you’re happy with your phone service and not experiencing any issues with your line.”
She could hear the smile in his voice, and felt her own mouth raise in response. He was polite and well-spoken, and hung up with only a few minutes later, after wishing her a lovely day. There. Not so feeble at all.
.
.
“Hello?”
Your voice was sharper than you intended it to be, but you were long past caring at that point. It had been a grueling few days. Moving mom should have been easy, should have taken a few hours at most, or so you’d thought: pack her clothes, a few framed photos, the afghan from the sofa, and then settle her into her new room at The Pines.
Things had not gone according to plan.
Your good-for-nothing brother was missing in action, probably off at the track, and you’d been stuck hauling out the recliner Ma insisted on taking with her, not wanting to have to “break in” a new chair in her room, alone. Sorting the clothes had taken an entire afternoon: a pile for the church, a pile to give to your sister Mary, who lived clear across the country and surely wouldn’t want an octogenarian’s wardrobe, but you couldn’t tell your mother anything.
Then there was the kitchen. “Ma, you don’t need to bring any of this stuff! I’m going to get it all packed up for you, I promise!” It had been no use. Your mother had come to terms with the fact that she couldn’t live alone anymore, not after her recent fall and the broken hip that had resulted. You traveled too much for work to be a dedicated caregiver and your brother couldn’t be trusted. Moving her into The Pines was the best solution, and one she’d accepted, eventually.
Evidently that didn’t mean she was willing to accept anyone else going through the entire house, divvying up donations and bequeathments, things she could have been doing for years, and not the weekend she was meant to be moving.
“Ma, it’s not like we’re going to be selling anytime soon! I can pick you up on Sundays and we can go room by room!”
As a result, you were cranky and tired and not in the mood for whoever the hell was on the phone.
“Good afternoon ma’am, how are you today?”
The voice on the other end of the line was pleasant and crisp with a generic friendliness, reminding you of a banker, or worse, a lawyer. You frowned in response.
“I’m fine, what’s this about?”
It was good you were still here, you thought. Your mother had let those smooth-talking bastards at QVC convince her to buy truck loads of their crap in years past, and now she was even more susceptible to their schemes.
“May I have your name, ma’am?”
“You may not,” you said testily, setting down the framed family photo you’d been holding, “not until you tell me what this is about.”
“I’m merely calling from a quality control center, ma’am, but I need to ensure I’m speaking to the right customer. Your name, please?”
The kid was unflappable, you’d give him that. His voice had never lost its smooth, rolling quality, but the joke was on him. You’d been born at night, but not last night. “You’re calling this number, don’t you think you ought to identify yourself first? How do you know you got customers here in the first place? Customers of what, by the way? ‘Cause we’re not interested in buying whatever the hell you’re selling.”
“Ma’am, I understand your concerns, and I assure that nothing is being sold and I’m not collecting any personal information, other than needing you to confirm your na—”
“Are you friggin’ hard of hearing? I’m not telling you anything until you tell me who you are and what this is about.”
A pause on the other end of the line was the only indication that you’d ruffled this smooth-talker’s feathers. You had the momentary thought to simply hang up, but decided that was just an invitation for them to call back. Call back and talk to Ma, and she’ll wind up giving this guy the security code to the house.
On the other side of the line, unbeknownst to you, the coolly-composed man rolled his eyes. Relatives. For the humans, time marched on. Time and technology, he’d learned. They’d wised up to the email schemes, over the years. His newest dabbling was the dating apps—Bumble and Tinder and Grindr and the rest of their ilk—he had accounts on each of them. His profiles were vague, giving just enough false information to lure in some unsuspecting human, and his smile was, obviously, irresistible. It was a reliable channel of names, that often came with the benefit of sexual dalliances, always a nice way to pass a few hours on this plane, but they also took work, more work than he was always willing to invest.
It had been a goldmine, this retirement community. Right on the edge of the forest, he could work from home, so to speak, dialing from room to room, collecting names and building his coffers. The residents changed often enough, and were always happy to hear from him.
They were all so worried about their precious Visa cards that they never stopped to consider the most valuable thing they possessed, they gave away freely.
He decided to try a different tactic, as you filled the dresser with clothing, aggravatedly shoving handfuls of slips and socks into a drawer.
“May I speak to the resident at this number, please?”
A red haze seemed to settle over your gaze, as the implication behind the politely-worded question revealed itself. The resident...of a retirement home. They want to talk to someone old and confused who won’t push back, not your cranky Hanover ass.
“What is your name?” you gritted out, barely keeping your composure as your mother piped up from the corner.
“Gloria, who is it? Tell them I only want the newspaper on Sundays!”
“I want your name, and I want to speak to your supervisor right now.” Silence met you for several heartbeats. “Hello? I said—”
“I’m sorry ma’am, but there’s no supervisor on this line for you to speak to. If you would just—”
“What. Is. Your. Name.” You didn’t need to speak to anyone, you thought. You’d just reverse dial as soon as you hung up on this punk, getting the company’s name when they picked up again.
“You can’t just ask me that,” the smooth voice laughed on the other end, all traces of friendly professionalism gone, replaced instead by a hint of malice. Silvery and cold, all warmth gone, and you fought the instinct to throw the phone across the room. “You don’t ask me questions, I’m the one who—”
“Gloria, who was it? Did you tell them about the paper?”
You stared down at the disconnected receiver, quickly bending to unplug the cradle before you had to hear that voice again.
“You know what? Joey’s right. We don’t need to pay for a phone line. I’m going to get you a cell phone, one with big numbers, and one of those alert necklaces. That way you don’t have to worry about falling. You can call me and Mary anytime you want, okay? Put your sweater on, let’s go to the store right now.”
You didn’t know who the creep was, and you didn’t want to find out, you thought, lifting the disconnected cordless phone base up. You wouldn’t even leave it for the staff to plug in.
They were going to have to try a lot harder than that to get one over on Gloria Boniface. Let them try their scheme on somebody else. Not today, Satan.
On the other end of the disconnected line, the silvery-voiced man sighed. It didn’t matter, he thought. One room outside of his grasp, and it would change over soon enough. Time, for the humans, was a a raindrop in the sea for him, and time, as it always did, kept marching on.
There would be a new name to gather tomorrow.

So. This is super random but I was listening to the first TS album and it honestly brought me back.
~
I was 9 years old, my room was princess themed handpainted by my mom. It looked like I was the princess in the tower, a castle in the distance. It was very purple, even my cd player was purple. But that’s beside the point.
My mom came home from target one day and showed me the cd (likely having already listened to it because thats what moms do.) she thought I would like it so she picked it up for me to listen to. 9 year old me was only acquainted with Disney and what my mother played on the radio so this was like the biggest thing to me, like I remember feeling super grown up because this was MY cd and to me there was this super pretty girl on the cover that reminded me of a princess with a huge mane of blonde curly hair with butterflies around her. Basically Taylor Swift was already the best thing ever and I hadn’t even turned on my cd player yet.
I didn’t know who Tim McGraw was but I wanted to, my 9 year old self didn’t know what it was like to be so mad at a boy like in Picture to Burn but I knew all the lyrics, A Place in This World became an anthem of mine as I got older and life got hard. Our Song became the kind of love I knew I wanted when grew up.
Taylor quickly became someone for me to look up to.
~
Fast forward and im 11 years old. Its 2008 and my mom and I go to target playing Taylor Swift the entire way there, theres a new album my favorite singer has new music and the first thing I do when I get it is put it in the car cd player to listen to on our way home.
And just like that. I had a new love to asipre to, I wanted it to be like Fearless and Love Story, my mom loved The Best Day so much it made her cry. Later on when kids got mean Change joined A Place in This World.
~
Then there was the Fearless tour. It was 2010 and we traveled to go see it having missed the show in my hometown for reasons I no longer remember. Mom and I made a it a girls trip. We stayed at the hilton and apparently so did either Taylor herself or somone who worked with her did too because in the parking lot was her tour bus. My mom made me stand in front of it for a photo while I was VERY concerned with disrupting anyone who might be inside (I mean a world tour must be tiring right? I didn’t want to impose.)
~
Also 2010, speak now. I had a new love I wanted to find one day in Mine and Enchanted. Long Live and Mean were added to my 13 year old selfs anthums. My mother and I listened to Taylor on her ipod in the car on the way to school.
~
Fast forward to 2012 and Im a 15 year old goth kid who has a love for both heavy metal and country as well as a slew of other music. Its no longer ‘cool’ to love Taylor Swift and lucky me, I wasnt cool anyways nor did I want to be. Red came out and it was a totally different sound than what I had ever heard from my favorite singer before, I had met a boy who made me understand picture to burn and 15 (altho ill never admit it out loud) because frankly he sucked and I was way too good for him. But I was dancing around my practically all black room in my all black clothes to State of Grace and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. The Moment I Knew still makes my mother and I sad because no girl should have to feel that way. 22 gave me another new thing to look forward to. Strangely enough I wanted a love a bit like Stay Stay Stay.
~
Oh my god it 2015, im 17 turning 18 graduating highschool (still goth. still not cool. Still a Swiftie.) but I’m moving to new york, im making a playlist my life is just about to REALLY begin.
I sit on the plane by my mom, not entirely sure what I have gotten myself into, moving across the country. The year before around the time I decided my future destination 1989 came out and im listening to Welcome To New York on repeat in my seat, mentally prepared for those heartbeats under coats, Shake It Off had long since become another anthum for me along with New Romantics. I havent found love, but I want one like You Are In Love.
~
Its 2017, Im still in New York. Its long since become my home Im not always as dramatically dark as I was when I was 15 but its still there. I had JUST made an instagram in December of 2016 because frankly Im still not a fan of social media...but Taylor Swift is on instagram and I still love her. Taylors instagram went dark. I was BEYOND excited feeling my esthetic come out FINALLY people would stop being shocked that I love Taylor because girl is gonna make them all see she’s a powerhouse.
Look What You Made Me Do arrives and I am LIVING this era. Im buying up merch and playing it on repeat. When ticketmaster tells me i can score a place in line by watching videos, I have them playing 24/7 I haven’t been to a TS tour since I was a kid. time was always in my way. NOT THIS TIME! I wouldn’t allow it. My mom and I text endlessly about her new album. Mums favorite is New Years Day and I struggle to choose but land on I Did Something Bad. I want a love like King of My Heart and Delicate. She agrees that yes we should certainly go to the concert together, it’s exactly a month after my 21st birthday and Taylor has always been our thing.
~
July 21st, my mom and I go to New Jersy, VIP passes around our necks (her birthday gift to me) im in a snakeskin miniskirt and the concert is POURING rain. Its. Friggin. Magic. Were screaming all the lyrics and dancing around, not even realizing how soaked we are.
~
Its 2019 now, Im turning 22 this year, and obviously my birthday playlist holds that song in several places. ME! Has just been released. I joined tumblr this year to theorize with my fellow Swifties and Twitter to get updates from Taylor. I bought something pastel to wear for the first time in years and am slowly figuring out how to add it to my all dark wardrobe.
~
I wonder what my 9 year old self would say if she knew that I was here 13 years later informing my mother that we needed to go to another concert. If she knew the girl with all that curly hair on her CD would become her role model through life.
I have never believed in idolizing people because we are human and all make mistakes but Taylor Swift is the closest I have ever gotten to one.
I feel like although there’s an age gap, I grew up with her (mentally) her music in my head for the majority of my life making me want to be a better person and putting a smile on my face.
~
This isn’t something she will ever read, hell I would be surprised if anyone ever does because its long af and no one has time for this. But honestly I felt like it was worth putting out there because not many people ever get past simply screaming ‘OMG TAYLOR I LOVE YOU!!’
I just wanted to explain why on the off chance, she or someone else would see it and think ‘huh me too.’ Or put a smile on their face.
~
So basically, thank you @taylorswift for helping make me the person I am today and being there for me via song when lifes been hard as I grew up.
I love you not because of the insane theories and crazy detailed performances (although those are fun) but because you never let your fans forget that they are loved and that we all mean the world to you, because you have helped so many young girls find their place in this world.

Teaser | Two
14th February 2018
I’m going to die tomorrow.
I walk through the halls of my apartment complex running my hands over the walls, the paint chipping underneath my fingertips. The grey walls that made me feel sick. Made me feel as though the whole hallway could collapse onto me in any second, consuming me whole. I fumble to grab my keys out of my bag, dropping them in the process causing me to let out a frustrated groan. Finally managing to unlock the door I quickly walk into my living area, slamming the door shut behind me. I clench my eyes shut, eyebrows furrowing as I rub my face.
Letting out a sigh I walk towards the small area that I call a kitchen, grabbing a bottle of water, taking a sip as I remember the looks I received from the people on the street and in the shops, the small mumbles I hear from people I pass by, “Oh no honey,” or “I’m sorry”, they would say as they catch sight of the date on my arm.
15/02/2018
Rubbing at the clear reminder on my arm I place the water bottle on the counter, slipping off my shoes as I lean down to grab them, walking towards my bedroom, which consisted of a single bed, small desk, nightstand and a wardrobe designed for a small child.
So this was how it was going to end. Alone. In an apartment that I hate, with no one but myself. I never thought that this is how it would go, I believed as a child that I would go surrounded by the ones I know, but that’s just not the case now is it? God knows where the ones I loved are. Not that I care anymore. Running a hand through my hair I sit down on my bed, lying down so my legs are dangling off almost reaching the floor but just barely.
Shutting my eyes for a few seconds I think about how much of life I will miss out on. Having a family, getting married, all that basic stuff. Never was going to happen, not when my expiration date is when I’m only 20. I open my eyes, facing myself towards the calendar that hung loosely on the wall, the paint surrounding it, cracked.
I let out a sigh as I stare at the red circle circling tomorrows date. What have I accomplished? I graduated high school, went to university for a year then gave up and got two part-time jobs at two different retail stores. Nothing to be proud of.
Staring at the room around me I blink back the tears. Wishing that I could redo the past 20 years of my life, how many things I would have done instead of messing around, doing things I shouldn’t. I should have focused on the important things. Not people who would talk to me one day then ignore me the next. Focus on doing something with my life, something worth living for.
But what do I have to live for when I die tomorrow.
It’s not fair.
Glancing at the digital clock sitting on my nightstand, I read the time.
8:46pm
So little time left to live my life. So many places to visit, things to see. Holiday destinations. But I just couldn’t afford to go to places, with the income that I earn. People, celebrities I want to meet but never could, the times were never right. I just want more time.
*
“Tom,” I hear Harrison whisper, as he sees me staring at the date marked so clearly onto my wrist.
15/02/2018
I shake my head, quickly wiping away the tears that were starting to make their way down my face, one by one I would wipe them away, but they would just keep on coming and they wouldn’t stop until I was letting out sobs. I hear Harrison move next to me, faintly hearing him call for my family members.
They come in all together, all huddling around me, with Paddy sitting almost on my lap, his small arms wrapped around my left arm. Harry and Sam kneeling on the floor next to the couch I was sitting on, one hand one of my knees. I hear my mum and dad sniffling a meter away from me, holding onto each other for support as they look at me, all of us crying. I feel Paddy shake next to me, moving my arms around to hold tightly as I take in this moment where all of us are together.
“Tom…” My mum says, wiping her face as she moves her way over to me, Harry and Sam moving out of the way, Paddy still clinging to me for dear life. My dad makes his way over as well, both of them wrapping their arms around me as I cry into them.
“I’m- I’m not ready yet mum,” I whisper my voice coming out shaky and not clear.
“I don’t w-want to leave yet I can’t leave y-you all here.” I can hear Harrison turning to face away from me as I say those words, the sobs so quiet but not quiet enough that I wouldn’t hear them. Tears streaming down my face again like waterfalls.
“I know love, I know.” My mum says so quietly that if anyone made any other noise you wouldn’t hear her. Paddy lets out a small whimper causing me to hug him tighter, not liking the idea of my youngest brother so sad.
“I don’t want to go dad please,” I whisper into my dads shirt, he inhales shakily, looking down at me, shaking his head in a soft yet calming matter, I knew I had to go, But the thought of leaving my family scared me, and I’m pretty sure it scared them.
I’m not ready.
No one could be.

Unity Feast || Group Chatzy
Roman’s and Greeks gather together to celebrate their unity. Piper loses her purse and the night has a dramatic ending.
Percy had lived in New Rome for most of his adult life and he had yet to see it in such a beautiful condition. He didn’t know who was responsible for it, but the progress in the cities reconstruction was astounding. Where they hadn’t completed work, delicate decorations such as fairy lights or neon signs had soften the atmosphere around the square where the festivities were taking place. Striding through the crowds of people, he greeted friends left and right. He was wearing one of the few pieces of his wardrobe that he’d managed to salvage after he’d returned to his apartment at the war’s end. A dark navy blue suit with a light pink shirt and blue tie. Brown belt and brown shoes of course. Heading towards the bar, he ordered a drink. This was going to be a good night, at least that was what he hoped.
Wally had left after Z. The pair decided to meet each other at the feast separately. Wally came in a dark purple tux with a dark tie to match. He had added a laurel wreath to his head for the evening, something he felt was a nice addition. Wally was openly nervous, looking around every few minutes, waiting for something to pop up. It felt like nothing could be enjoyed anymore. The smell of food was quick to reduce his fears. Maybe if he ate something he’d feel better. As trays of food passed around, Wally picked up what seemed to be a fried ball of filled with stuffing and mashed potatoes. “Holy shit, has anyone else tried this?!” Wally snuck a few more of the things off a tray and made his way over to the bar to order a drink. He smiled when he saw Percy down a few seats. “Hey! You look good, man.”
As a general rule, Abigail was not a party person. Partially because bumping into other people was inevitable, partially because talking to other people was inevitable, partially because it meant getting all dressed up when she’d much prefer to lounge around in her couch, braless, hair tied up in a bun, wearing an oversized shirt covered in Cheeto dust and with her cat, Shelley, curled up on her lap. Counterpoint: she liked drinking, dancing and eating fancy snacks. So this was kind of a conundrum. In the end, she solved it by giving into peer pressure and going to the friggin’ party. Wearing a full-length light blue gown (with full sleeves and gloves, of course) and with her hair in a neat braid, Abigail was thoroughly enjoying the open bar, ordering the drinks that looked the fanciest and the wackiest. Later, once her legs had rested from the walk over, maybe she’d dance.
Noticing the two children of Hecate that had arrived around him, Percy finished his drink order. “Hey Wally,” he said as he finished ordering a pint of beer, turning to look at Abby and then leaning back and engaging both his friends, “you and Abby definitely know each other right?” he asked with a gentle smile. He’d known both Wally and Abby separately. Both of them were children of Hecate and though he’d spent time in New Rome and Camp Half Blood with them separately, this might’ve been the first time that he’d seen them together. “Is it too early to start really drinking? I’ve been considering when the appropriate time to start doing shots would be.”
While Jason wasn’t the world’s biggest fan of overly formal events, he couldn’t deny that he looked pretty good when he attended them. Anxiously smoothing down the front of his dark gray jacket and adjusting his dark red tie he strode purposefully into the half-finished Senate house, marveling at the beauty of the edifice. As he turned slowly to take in everything around him he caught a familiar bearded face from across the room, and wandered over to his best friend, snagging two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray as he did. “It might be too early for shots. However I think you’re in the clear for some bubbly.” He squeezed Percy’s arm and nodded to the people he was talking to, brushing his hair out of his face. “Evening. You both look lovely.”
While Percy was all fussy about when was the right time to start drinking, Abigail was on her third tequila shot. “Uh. Wally? Never heard of him. Sounds like he got jealous of my nickname, though”, she said, deadpan, before licking off the salt from the back of her hand and downing her shot like a pro. “Evening, Jason. Thank you, I always do. You two look nice, too.” Unable to help herself, she added, teasingly: “For guys, I guess.”
Annabeth had never been one for much dressing up, and she much preferred her shorts and t shirts, but in the spirit of the Unity Feast she was now sporting a long blue gown. Praying to all the gods that she didn’t trip over it somehow in the course of the evening, she headed over to where a cluster of her friends stood. “ Hey, what’d I miss? ”
Wally nodded. “Yes we know each other, sadly.” He smiled at Abigail and thanked the bartender when his drink arrived. “I think we all look pretty sexy, myself included, of course.” When Annabeth came over, he shrugged. “Nothing yet. We’re getting drinks, but it seems Percy is apprehensive. But my guess is: put something blue in front of him and he’ll drink it, no matter what.” Wally took a look around and showed his plate of kind-of-stolen delicacies to the small group. “You guys gotta try these. There is mash potatoes and stuffing mixed in. It’s like . . . I don’t know. It’s the kinda stuff the gods hoard away from us.”
Turning, Percy accepted the glass of champagne off of his best friend and took his place besides Jason. Smiling graciously, he shrugged. “I want to be clear, I’m not the type of person to shy away from a good drink. I definitely don’t think that I’m the type of person to turn down a shot, I was simply musing as to whether or not it was worth considering if there was an appropriate time for shots. Four for shots perhaps?” he smiled gently and looked to Annabeth, winking gently at his friend before taking a sip from his champagne flute as the music filtered through the evening air. The sound of violins singing in the background.
“I never really associated this outfit with pounding shots at the bar,” Jason laughed, straightening his tie and vest, but if we’re lining up at the rail, I’ll do my duty and uphold my collegiate honor.” As Annabeth joined their group he gave her a small wave, sipping from his flute. The entire scene was a little surreal, but he didn’t all together hate it. They had earned this party, with blood sweat and tears and hopefully it would give them all a chance to heal some of the ugly wounds the war had opened. “I hope there are more than canapés at this thing or we’re going to be drunk in a corner in the first five minutes.”
Connor took his time arriving at the party. Sure, he enjoyed them, and all the things that came with parties, such as food and alcohol and pickpocketing, but he just wanted to take it slow tonight. Walking through the crowd, he wore a white button up shirt with floral patterns on, half buttoned down, along with navy pants and matching brown shoes and a belt. Flashing flirty grins at most people he passed, his eyes fell upon his friends at the bar. “I see we’re forming a sub-party over here, is it invite only?” He joked before ordering himself a whiskey and lemonade. “Glad to see we all turned up, everyone looks stunning.” His eyes flickered over everyone before finally landing on his drink. Tonight would have been great, if it wasn’t for the fact that he was terribly missing someone.
Marcus leant against a building on the outside of the square, tapping his ring against his glass. His eyes gently scanned through the crowd making mental notes of everyone he knew. So far, he hadn’t noticed anyone who caught his particular attention, other than a couple of greeks that had started to gather at the bar. Sighing he pushed himself off the wall and moved towards the centre of the square, slipping past people with ease. A smile tugged at the edge of his lips as he spotted his co-centurion and began to move towards her. “Cat, imagine seeing you here.” He joked.
It was strange to think that once upon a time Marcus had been Cat’s subordinate, but now they were partners in leading what was essentially her life’s work. Marcus had been the most suitable choice after Jax had left, however without him here, now, it felt strange. “Marcus,” she drawled, raising a glass of red wine to her equally crimson lips, “a pleasure as always to see you here.” Wearing a sleek black silk dress, Cat reached up and played with the black diamond she wore around her neck. Absently taking everything in. “It has truly turned out well, morale should benefit from the extravagance, don’t you think?”
Brock had been there since before the event started. He offered to act as guard but his higher-ups still felt he was a bit too off balance to be working. They believed it would be better for him to enjoy the event, as if he could. The entire feast, while he was happy to see Romans having a good time, it felt like a joke. Seeing Marcus and Cat, Brock got into stepping. Seeing familiar faces, ones incredibly friendly took a weight off of Brock he hadn’t been aware of before. “Marcus, Cat, how’re you both? You both look nice.” His eyes strayed from Cat but he kept an even smile. Brock had come in a suit lent to him by his friend, tailored of course. A dark green suit with a thin belt around his waist, similar to those of the strings tied around a tunic.
In her defence, Piper hadn’t meant to get so tipsy. She’d only meant to stay for a little while, have a couple of drinks, and then go home. But that wasn’t what happened. She was on her second drink by now, a complete and utter lightweight, swaying in time to the music as she swallowed the sweet taste of cranberry-vodka down her throat. She hadn’t put much effort into her appearance tonight, wearing a tight red dress and pair of heels. She looked great, however, but didn’t feel on her A-game. Nonetheless, she wanted to see everyone. Following after Connor, she said, “Hey, has anyone seen my purse? Pretty — pretty sure I left it somewhere. Don’t know where, but it’s got to be here somewhere.” Even when tipsy, she could talk eloquently.
Eyeing the drinks available, Annabeth was torn between making a conscious decision to stay sober, or throw caution to the wind, because let’s face it, they all deserved a night to get shitfaced after everything that had gone on. “ Cheers to the night? ” She lifted her own glass at the group, raising her eyebrow as Conner and Piper joined them. “ I haven’t, but I could go with you to take a look around if you’d like? ” She offered, noting the slightly slurring girl. There was a voice in the back of her mind telling her that if the beginning of the night was any indication, it might be safer for there to be at least one sober person. God knows what might happen when you mixed a bunch of demigods and legacies who had still unresolved tension and alcohol.
Despite everything that had happened in the last few months, Percy found himself relaxing and enjoying himself. Swallowing a few mouthfuls of champagne, he glanced between Annabeth and Piper wondering whether Piper had even brought a purse with her, “I wouldn’t worry too much about it,” Percy replied with a smile as he reached for several more glasses of champagne and passed them around the group, ensuring that anyone who didn’t already have a drink was well provided for. “If I can just take a moment, I’d like to toast us all, Roman and Greek alike, we’ve been through so much and we’ve come out stronger. So a toast to the years to come, with all the friends we’ve made along the way.” He raised his glass towards the small group they’d formed by the bar. Completely oblivious of all the people they were blocking from gaining access to said bar, but in that moment they couldn’t care less.
Despite his love for these events, Aidan was nervous with how things would go. If he’d know anyone there, if he’d be dressed well enough. He fidgeted with his outfit in the storefront windows as he made his way down, feeling over the soft pink lace sewn over his creamy white jacket. Matching pants, and rose gold cufflinks. He stared at the lights of the party before entering, putting on his best smile. His anxiety washed away seeing people he knew. “Hope I’m not too late to join in?” He asked, picking up a glass of his own, knowing to be mindful of how much he had, eyeing Cat. Aidan wasn’t about to embarrass himself further. Everything felt surreal. Calm. Okay for the first time and Aidan felt good about the night. About the future a little bit too.
Jason raised his glass as Percy launched into a toast, nodding along to his friend’s words. “Here here. To the friendships we’ve made along the way and to the peace we now work to construct. May they both last an eternity.” He downed his glass and passed it off to a passing waiter before snagging another full one. He was more than his usual amount of awkward; given that this was the first event he’d been to where he didn’t have a title and job to hide behind, but he was bound and determined to make it work. Which meant acknowledging the presence of the bitch in the black dress across the circle from him. “Ms Karavadra.” He half bowed “you look lovely this evening. Hopefully you’ll save a dance for me later, provided your dance card isn’t already full.”
By the time Abigail came back, she was still a little tipsy and her feet -- foot, her foot hurt. She slid delicately onto the stool, propped her elbows up onto the bar. Her cheeks were flushed with the exercise, her hair only slightly out of place. “I missed the toast?” she asked, then ordered a side of French fries, one of her few guilty pleasures. Out the corner of her eye, she saw Karavadra, promptly deciding to ignore her. It had always been obvious how Karavadra felt about the Greeks, so Abigail felt no obligation to go out of her way to be nice.
Honestly, as Cat, Brock and Marcus made their way past the group of merrymakers toasting and loudly talking about shots, food and the food time that they were having. Cat’s emotional mask slid into place as she gave Jason the most beautiful smile that she could muster. “You look positively ravishing yourself, that suit really brings out your eyes.” She smiled kindly at him as she continued gliding past. “I shall endeavour to save you a dance,” she gestured to Marcus and Brock as if to indicate that she was already inundated with potential prospects, “but as I am sure that you can see Mr. Grace, my dance card is filling up fast, so make sure you get in while stocks last.” She gave him one final sickly sweet smile, a mischievous glitter in her eyes as she imagined what disembowelment would be like for him. She hoped painful. His self righteous smug nature was almost sickening.
Cat had a way with people, she knew what to say and how to seem elegant and hide her true feelings. Marcus however, struggled with it despite his natural gift with the mist and his illusion spells. Instead, he opted to simply showing his true emotions, one of disinterest towards the group. He remembered all the Roman legionnaires they had lost through the war, not to mention their legionnaires on every other day too. He might have seemed old fashioned with his ways, but blood must have blood, just, not now. Leaving Cat’s side, he flashed a chaotic smile at Jason and then the others. “You don’t mind if a join you right? You did make a toast to Romans and Greeks alike, that includes me right?” A tone of mischievousness danced in between his words as he placed his empty glass on the table and ordering a new one, purposely leaning over and Greeks in the way.
“Oh, Zeus”, Abigail said under her breath. She didn’t mind the Romans’ company on grounds of them being Romans, but she didn’t like the atmosphere they’d brought with themselves. Growing up in a hostile environment, she could pick up on the slightest of signs of someone getting angry. Her magic probably had something to do with it, too. Always a hater of physical contact, but too stubborn (too fucked up) to display weakness, Abigail didn’t even twitch as Marcus leaned over her to get a new drink. Her plate of fries arrived, and she used a toothpick to stab at them, eyes flicking between Jason and the Romans.
Connor rolled his eyes as Cat showed up. He recalled their previous conversation and couldn’t help but feel a taste of disgust in his mouth. “Piper, I could also help you look for it if you like? I’d rather be anywhere but in the presence of her.” He felt like spitting her name out of his mouth but held himself back. Besides, it honestly wasn’t worth it. “I haven’t seen anyone steal it, perhaps you left it on a table and a waiter picked it up?” Connor had been drinking but he was sober enough to help look for a purse.
Wally turned himself around when Cat showed up. He prayed to his mom that she was passing by. If he never saw her again, he’d be fine. Wally poured back half of his drink and signaled the bartender. This would be more fun, and a lot easier to get through if he was a lot less sober. “Whiskey shot,” he chimed. Wally vaguely heard the daughter of Aphrodite talking about a missing purse. He knew somewhere in his room there was a locator spell, but that was all the way back in his apartment. ‘Sides, Connor’s already offered, he reasoned. Waiting for Z might just be his best option.
Brock grinned at the Greeks and caught the eye of Annabeth and Jason. Even before the war, after the Greeks had shown up, word of Annabeth’s skill in battle came around quickly. He had imagined a few times what it would be like to fight her, what he could learn from her. Jason on the other hand made him feel agitated and annoyed. It was aggravating to see an unfaithful Roman, but Jason wouldn’t allow himself to get too deep into thought on that. There was mystery on both sides and it was easier to just protect the civilians. “Cat, maybe we should go somewhere less rowdy? You wouldn’t want to get anything spilled on that dress.”
It wasn’t like Z to be so terribly late. He had always been the punctual sort, but times were changing and he had a bit of elephant business to take care of before making his way to the festivities. As he slipped past people with faces he knew and treated, he fiddled with the cuffs on his suit jacket. Unfortunately, he hadn’t had the prior inkling to get anything new tailored and his recent surplus of physical activity was making his clothes fit a little snug. It couldn’t be helped. “Oh; excuse me,” he politely exclaimed as he passed by a couple talking privately amongst themselves. His shorter stature easily snaked beyond them, only for him to come to a complete stop when he nearly bumped into Aidan. “Lace? To an event like this? You’re bolder than I thought you’d be.” The tease came easily as he reached over and wrapped his fingertips around a glass on a tray passing by. He eyed the contents warily. The last thing he wanted was alcohol, but this was clear. The squint he gave the glass was almost threatening.
Percy winced internally as the Romans moved over to the side of his group and Marcus made it clear that he was welcoming himself to the proverbial party. Reaching into a small bowl of olives, Percy chewed on a thick green one soaked in chilli oil and made sure that it was crushed into nothingness before he even considered opening his mouth. “Yeah can I get two shots of tequila with lime and salt,” he turned to a Jason whom he knew couldn’t stand Catherine Karavadra, especially after what he considered to be her wrongful arrest of former Praetor Reyna and Frank, “down the hatch bud,” he grimaced as the tequila poured down his throat. The tension in the room was near unbearable as Connor and Cat seemed to glower at one another from across the room. However Percy was determined to ease things off, he knew that the easiest way to do so was probably to break the group up. Turning to Piper and Annabeth, he looked at Jason and grinned. “Ladies?” he asked as Boogie Wonderland began to play in the background, “may we have this dance?”
Cat knew that she was the least popular Roman in miles, and considering the high density population of this square that was truly something to say. The Karavadra family hadn’t done itself any favours by funding and leading the war effort. But Cat knew deep in her stomach that she had done the right thing. She’d been protecting her city, protecting her people. “Yes, I think we should move along Brock, are you coming Marcus?” she asked as she strode away and moved towards Aidan and Z. “I agree, lace was certainly a very bold choice, however I am not convinced that Aidan’s got it in him to be anything less than bold, it has always been a trait that he has possessed.” Despite the fact that he’d previously drunk too much on a mission, she had to admit that the guts which that took was impressive to say the least, she didn’t know many Legionnaires that would survive an ordeal or even risk it.
Piper, ever the eloquent one, grinned at Annabeth, giving her an appreciative glance as she did so. About to accept the offer, she was interrupted by Percy. “I wouldn’t worry about it usually,” she replied. “But I’m pretty sure I left a few important items in - in the bag.” A hiccup sounded, soon followed by another giggle. She was about to say more — perhaps launch into a great speech herself — when Percy beat her to it. Honestly, his way of speaking was much better — and more eloquent — than hers was, so she let it slide, lifting her glass in the air and saying, “Hear, hear!” in response to what he had said. Then, noting Connor at her side, the young demigod latched onto him, curling an arm over his shoulders as she said, “The more help the merrier! I really, really need that bag. Seriously.” She’d already forgotten what she’d put in there, beside a pack of gum, but she was sure it was important. And whoever Connor (and Jason) were trying to avoid, Piper would happily help them do so. However, the thought of her bag was soon forgotten upon Percy’s invitation to dance, and with yet another grin in Jason and Percy’s direction (and with a slight stumble), she said, “I’d love to. Annabeth, what do you say?”
On the surface, this was the time for Greeks and Romans to make up, but as the daughter of a strategy goddess, or even someone with a smidge of common sense, Annabeth knew that things would never be that easy. She nodded in acknowledgement, smiling slightly at the ones who recently arrived, feeling the need to set an example, but it would be a lie to say that she wasn’t wary, especially of Catherine. Grateful for Percy, she silently commended him in her mind, knowing that if they continued here any longer it wouldn’t end up well. “ Don’t yell if I step on anyone’s toes, though. The rest of you want to come? ” She grinned, moving in their direction and extending a hand to steady Piper. The responsible part in her, though, couldn’t help but question Piper again. “ Are you sure you don’t want to go look for your bag first? If there’s important things in it … ”
Frowning at the situation, Percy decided that before any dancing was to be done they would have to discover the whereabouts of the bag. “Has anyone asked some of the staff?” he turned around to the bartender behind the bar and turned to look at Piper. After a hurried conversation, Percy turned to the group. “The bartender says he hasn’t seen it but there is apparently an official lost and found across the way,” he turned and strode off, unsure of which way to go, but he led the way all the same, doing everything that he could to indirectly combat the tension growing between them all. “What colour is your purse?” he asked curiously as the music shifted from Earth Wind and Fire to something a bit more modern that he couldn’t place his finger on.
Connor grinned as Piper placed an arm around him but simply slipped away when she left for a dance. He wasn’t in the mood to dance right now, not after the atmosphere that Cat brought with her. He was about to suggest that he go look for the purse whilst they danced, but then Percy set off on a mission. With a skip and sprint, he caught up to Percy’s side. “I can check the square entrances? Perhaps someone picked it up and dropped it off there. I don’t think it was stolen, and if it was, I could find that out too.” Without waiting for a response, he turned to face the others. “Anyone want to join me?” He then turned and made his way to the entrance that he had come through.
Marcus picked up the drink the bartender had whipped up for him but before he could say anything else, the group seemed to split up and Cat somewhat summoned him to follow her. Sipping his drink he grinned and followed behind Cat, free hand in his pocket. He wasn’t exactly impressed with how Aidan acted during the raiding of the Greek party, but it was amusing. He wasn’t there but he had definitely heard about it. It had been brought up at one of the Centurion meetings so that the Centurion of the 5th could deal with it. “Can you handle your alcohol tonight Aidan?” He said with a teasing smile. He then turned to look over the crowd. Frankly, he was rather bored. “Brock, interested in doing some rounds? I wouldn’t mind reprimanding a few legionnaires that have gotten themselves drunk during the festivitie?”
All the Greeks seemed, suddenly, very concerned with Piper’s bag, and Abigail suspected -- no, she was certain -- that, while their concern was real, they were all the more grateful to get away with the least popular demigod in New Rome. It was a pity that Marcus was so heavily associated with her (at her beck and call, in Abby’s opinion), because, as her mother always said: she was always Hecate. That was why she’d been the least affected by the Roman-Greek split. In her opinion, Marcus and the other children of Trivia were almost as much of her siblings as their Greek counterparts... “See you ‘round, brother”, she said, stabbing another fry with her toothpick. Deciding to help out, Abigail stood. “I’ll come with you, Connor.”
Cat gently watched the majority of the Greeks depart from the large part of the bar that they’d been occupying. “Make sure that you don’t pick on too many of them, I’ve got a nice 10 mile run in full gear for any of our Legionnaires returning to the barracks intoxicated underage, and anyone late for duties will be joining them.” It was a tradition she and Jax had formerly run, and one she intended to continue running in her brother’s absence. She didn’t mind her soldiers enjoying themselves, but they had to always put their duty first. Arriving to duty hungover was unacceptable and it was not something she was willing to tolerate. “But do make sure that our soldier’s are minding their manners. I’d hate for anyone to get upset in such a tense time.”
Aidan’s face flushed and he shrugged. The situation had grown increasingly uncomfortable with Cat and Marcus’ presence, and it felt weird to receive what felt like a compliment from her. “Thank you Z, thank you Cat. And don’t worry, Marcus, I will be watching my intake. I’ve learned that lesson. The rather hard way.” He said remembering how hot and heavy that armor had been the full 10 miles. His muscles ached from the memory. “But maybe go easy on my fellow legionnaires? Gods know we could all use tonight as a break. All work and no play, you know.” He watched as the group split, most people going after his sister’s mysteriously lost purse. He wondered if she’d even brought it. “How’ve you been Z? I haven’t seen you in a hot minute.”
There was a lot to unpack at once. Z recalled, during the final declaration in front of the senate, that there was some sort of tension between Cat and Aidan, but the wording tonight from the centurion and also the man following her alluded to something more. The child of Hypnos would’ve given why a bit more thought, only the voices of a few familiar people caused his head to tilt away from those closest to him to garner a glance at the slight commotion. His ears could faintly pick up on them deciding to split up to look for Piper’s purse. He thought it was best to join them, since it would give him a chance to avoid whatever was about to happen before him with the Romans, but their talking drew him back in and his honey eyes snapped back to them quickly. “Never a dull moment for the Legion, I suppose,” he mused over the rim of his glass. Wagering a sip told him it was very much not water and he hated how smoothly the small bit of clear liquor went down without causing him to wince. “I’ve been as alright as I could be. It’s hard not falling victim to the ‘all work and no play’ sort of thing nowadays. I take it that it’s been fairly similar with people on your end as well?” His words were in the addressing of all the parties before him, not simply to Aidan. He didn’t want to be rude, no matter how much his skin crawled and itched at the thought of what sort of snap could possibly come from Cat or the, frankly, curt man with her.
Brock laughed and shrugged, picking his head up to look around at all that was going on. “Sure, though I think Aidan’s right, Marcus, go easy on them tonight. It’s not everyday that we get to go to a feast.” Roman life was hard and as understatements go, that was certainly one of them. But it made their parties, the times when they did relax all the better and everyone was more grateful for it. If he couldn’t relax tonight, on day when everyone was suppose to be thankful for things, maybe his superiors were right and he was too rigid. “Maybe have a drink first, Marcus.”
Wally watched the group of Greeks leave as he stayed at the bar, deciding to wait on Z. It was a few more minutes until he heard the sound of his boyfriends voice. Turning around, he saw him talking to the kid who Wally had looked after children with. He smiled, happy to see that Z was making friends. He looked back and realized his shot had been sitting there, waiting for him. He threw it back and grabbed his other drink, and went to join Z by putting an arm around his waist and saying hello to both him and Aidan. “Nice night for a party. How’re you boys?”
“Definitely.” Aidan replied. “Reconstruction efforts, civilian complaints…” He sighed, shaking his head and grinned. “And children watching. Wally here sure knows his way around the kids.” He greeted the man as he appeared. Aidan felt like gushing over how cute the pair were, but he held himself together for his current superiors. “I’m pretty good, and how are you? Did you get called back to the daycare since last time? I’m sure the kids wondered why you haven’t been back yet.”
Nico was never huge on social gatherings. The whole idea had his anxiety skyrocketing, but given the general atmosphere of New Rome following the full blown war he'd completely missed out on, he figured making an appearance would be a good thing, especially considering his history of attempting to maintain peace between the Romans and the Greeks. He arrived in an all black three piece suit, despite the fact that he absolutely hated dressing up, but a dress code was a dress code. The decor was breathtaking, and the reconstruction seemed to be heading in the right direction. Deciding against immediately seeking out human interaction, he made his way over to the bar and, after a millisecond long internal discussion about just how old he was (sometimes he forgot his exact age, given the fact that he was technically almost a century old), he ordered himself a Guinness and took a few small sips from the glass.
Percy had checked three bars across the square, doing his best to find Piper’s lost property. He had been enjoying the night well enough, and it only improved as he spotted the black three piece suit of Nico di Angelo. Drinking his typical pint of Guinness, Percy wondered if his friend drank Guinness for the aesthetic or whether he genuinely enjoyed the taste. Either way there was something striking about his appearance. “Nico!” Percy beamed, “I was wondering if you would show up.” Turning to the bartender he ordered himself another drink. The waiters that were moving around the room with Champagne seemed to have disappeared for the moment and Percy wanted to try reconnect with his friend, if he possibly could. “Isn’t the party going well?” he asked as the bartender passed him a pint of Blue Moon. Sadly the drink itself wasn’t actually blue, but the name at least made up for it a little bit.
Nico had no intention of moving from his spot at the bar just yet. Social interaction was draining, something he had to work himself towards. He’d blown through a quarter of his Guinness before he made out a familiar face moving through the crowd and towards him, a small smile forming on his lips. “Figured I'd at least make an appearance.” he responded, turning his body toward his friend. “I think so, yeah. Part of me forgets you guys were at each other's throats not too long ago, but then I spotted a couple Legionnaires giving me the stink eye.” he added with a light laugh. “I think things are going in the right direction for the most part, though.”
Percy had to admit that he was pleased to see his friend. Slipping his hand into his jacket pocket, he reassured himself by patting the pen which would transform into Riptide on the inside pocket of his jacket. Sipping at the hoppy larger he’d been given, Percy shrugged. “We were all manipulated into fighting one another, that’s something that’s going to take time to adjust to that,” sighing gently he took another long drink and sat silently. “The tension seems undeniable.” He sighed gently and shrugged. “But these things are the best worked out in social situations with a shit tonne of booze and food, right?”
Connor accepted the company and began checking the entrances. “No luck, this is really strange. I’m sure it’ll show up sometime though. He shrugged and dug his hands into his pockets, slowly heading over to a bar and ordering shots. “I suppose we should reward ourselves for the effort.” He states as 5 shots per person were poured. They were called sours and weren’t potent but 5 of them were surely to get the party going. He took all 5 swiftly and tilted his head back to enjoy the head rush. Spinning, he turned to locate everyone. He noted Percy’s location, watched as Marcus seemed to leave the party and finally his eyes fell on Cat. He stared as anger boiled. He couldn’t believe how stubborn and selfish someone could be. Not offering help to refugees simply because she’s helped the Romans already and was busy rebuilding. Perhaps it was the alcohol crowding his judgement but he spat on the floor and pulled a subtle middle finger at the Roman before turning and ordering his favorite drink. “I hate her.” He said to whomever was still with him after the shots and the purse hunt.
Cat hadn’t seen Connor’s less than subtle attempt at swearing at her. Mainly because as she had been crossing the square, she had noticed a small bag. Squatting down delicately, she scooped it up and returned to her less than lofty heights. Although the heels she wore allowed her to stand above her usual stature. Opening the purse, she flicked through it to find an ID. Piper Mclean. Interesting. Cat hadn’t exactly ever talked to Jason Grace’s former flame, and though she was sure that Piper was as insufferable as the rest of the heroes of the prophecy who had earned their fame through a few lucky quests, unlike her prestigious career through the Legion, leading and fighting for her people as it should be done. She was aware that a purse had been lost, and set out to return it to its owner. They had to at least pretend to play at peace right?
Connor turned and leaned his back against the bar, taking a sip of his drink, his eyes scanned the crowd again. It was a habit of his, searching the crowd for potential targets even if he had no plans of stealing anything. That’s when his eyes landed on Cat yet again. Seeing the purse that clearly did not match her outfit, he squinted and pieced things together. He launched himself off the bar and stormed off towards her. “I see you’ve found a purse, how convenient after Piper’s had just gone missing. I don’t suppose that’s hers is it?” He stood in her path, arms folded across his chest. “If you’re done doing who knows what with her belongings, I’ll return it to her thanks.” He held his hand out for her to hand the purse over.
Cat had no intention of speaking to impudent Greek that was angrily crossing the square across from her. However it soon became clear to her that Connor had every intention of speaking to her. Not even bothering to suppress the roll of her eyes she tutted at him. “Are you always this arrogant and rude?” she asked with a sneer quickly dancing across her face before she composed herself. “For your information, I only just picked this up, unlike you children of Hermes I have no intention or desire to steal. If I wanted this purse then I’d simply purchase it. However as this is hardly my sort of taste,” she looked somewhat disdainfully at the purse and frowned gently, “now if you’ll excuse me then I shall return this myself, I don’t need your interference, please step aside and next time remember who you’re speaking to. I’m not one of your cabin mates from Camp Half Blood. I’m a centurion of the twelfth Legion, I don’t owe you any explanation.”
“Actually, yeah I am.” Connor spat. “Especially to people that have given me a clear reason for me to be rude to them.” He spoke with confidence and met her gaze. “It’s not the purse you wanted, it was the information. Like you said, you’re a Centurion of the twelfth Legion, it’s your job to collect information on people who could be a threat, maybe you’re just collecting knowledge of the Greeks so that next time you declare war against us, you’ll have a better fighting chance.” He laughed dryly. “Yeah, so you get your henchmen to do everything else for you, but this you’d like to do yourself? To paint yourself as a hero when you stole it in the first place? That’s the thing with Hermes kids like myself, we don’t just steal things, we know other criminals moves as well.”
Laughing quietly and mirthlessly at Connor, Cat actually had to place a hand over her mouth to prevent herself from really shrieking with laughter. “Ah, you’re truly a fool, I am more committed to the peace process than any of us, if you don’t remember it was my orders that had the senators taken into custody.” She would’ve liked to say that she hadn’t collected information on what she considered to the main strengths and weaknesses of all of the most powerful demigods who could be seen as a threat to her or to the Cult. “However, just because you’ve developed a vendetta against me and my people, like so many of your people is not of interest to me. I have nothing to benefit from painting myself as the hero over something so petty. You’re drunk and making a fool of yourself. Now I’ll ask you one more time step away from me and allow me to continue on my path. This is none of your concern. Go back to your drinks.”
“Connor.” Abigail said, resting her hand over his chest to stop him from possibly advancing over Cat. Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm, commanding respect. In another life, she would’ve made a good commander. “Stop. It’s not worth it to pick a fight. Actually, it’s downright a bad idea. Peace is fragile right now. Don’t. Blow it.”
Past experiences had trained Annabeth to sense trouble brewing pretty quickly, though she was too far away to stop the confrontation between Connor and Catherine. She’d never been much of a peacekeeper herself, one much more likely to fall victim to her own pride, but even then her analytical mind knew that de-escalation would be the correct path here. Noting that there was already someone attempting to hold Connor back, she caught his eye for a moment, hand slightly tapping his back as she passed, hoping that he would take the hint to back down. Instead, she turned her attention to Cat, smile on her face. “ Thanks for finding it, but Piper’s a little tipsy at the moment, and would probably end up losing it again if you gave it to her now. We’ll take care of it for now, but I’ll let her know that you found it. ”
Raising an eyebrow at the situation, Cat dipped her head gently and nodded. Handing the purse gently and carefully over to Annabeth before taking a step away. She had no intention to further the conflict with Connor, she wasn’t nearly childish enough to do so, perhaps that wasn’t entirely true but she had airs to keep up. Her professionalism was meant to be the core of her personality. “Hopefully she doesn’t lose it again,” she turned and strode away, moving towards Marcus with a slight smirk. That had been somewhat satisfying.
The Legionnaires had a lot on their plates, but this was certainly not a concept localized for just them. Z couldn’t quantify the amount of work the Greeks were also busy with. His own workload was enough to make him dizzy sometimes. “That does seem like quite a bit—Oh!” he gasped out softly as an arm snaked around his form. He looked over, and then subsequently upward, to see his boyfriend’s face, and his heart skipped a beat. Thank the gods it wasn’t someone random. “Aidan was the one you were working with at the daycare? What a coincidence. We met while I was keeping some children company in a game of hide and seek.” The universe worked in mysterious ways, it seemed. It was basically fate that they meet, just as it seemed to be fate that some sort of loud conversation broke out at an event for peace. As short as he was, he couldn’t quite see over the heads of other partygoers, but he did catch the faintest of sights of Connor and what sounded to be Cat’s voice as well over the cacophony of others. A frown graced his face as he fiddled with the glass between his hands.
Aidan sighed, thinking about how cute Wally and Z were, wishing he too would someday find something like they had. Or at least had thought to bring a date to dance with. It felt like a middle school dance, as tensions kept most the groups to the bar and food areas. Chatting quietly. At least it was passive until he heard the commotion, and felt a vague sense of dejavú watching Connor drunkenly yell at Cat. He just felt glad it wasn’t himself, not having even finished the glass in hand. Aidan downed it and trying to keep a smile on his face as he began to feel suffocated from the ensuing silence cleared his throat. “Brock- would you uh, would you care to dance?” He asked, trying to change the subject. “I love the-the cha cha slide, everyone… knows it…” He trailed off, hoping someone would jump to his aid. Surely he wasn’t the only uncomfortable one.
The Dominus has watched eagerly as the party had progressed. Tension burning bright after all the chaos they’d caused for them lingered in the back of their minds. Placing their empty palm on a sphere of crystal they stepped forward and cleared their throat before exerting their will on the magical artefact in their possession. Across the city, in the unity feast a shimmering apparition appeared before darkening into a silhouette made of pure shadow. With a voice like nails being dragged across slate, the Dominus began their first address. “Demigods. I hope you have enjoyed tonight’s festivities as it may be one of your last.” They pause for dramatic effect, drinking in the silence that had fallen on the crowd. “I appear before you tonight with some information for all if you. An omen, a warning. By now, you are aware that there is a cult that has burrowed and wormed its way into the city’s roots and corrupted almost every aspect of this society. The members of this cult are among us as I speak, yet in the shadows, they hide. The cult is one of the most powerful forces in New Rome, and it obeys my bidding now. I have poisoned this city, and used the cult to do so. Watch in despair as your hopes rot away, leaving nothing behind, you are witnesses of the end of New Rome. Your city will soon collapse in terror and despair. You may be asking yourself who I am, well that’s easy. I, am simply known, as the Dominus. A name that will be on your tongues as you die in the rubble of this fallen city. Enjoy tonight, as soon the time of reckoning will be upon you.” The Dominus stepped away from his artefact and the vision cut off, a moment later the unity feast exploded into a chaotic roar of questions and shouts, confusion and concern enveloping the whole group.

imma try and ask you to answer all questions? Or like at least five of your choice because all of them are interesting
God, I love you. Thank you for this. I answered all the ones I hadn’t already.1. Do you prefer writing with black or blue pen? Black2. Would you prefer to live in the country or the city? The city; the country is beautiful and I love the sunrise, but the bugs…I have a phobia of ticks and I would NOT survive out there.3. If you could learn a new skill, what would it be? Piloting a plane, for sure. Its on my bucket list.4. Do you drink your tea or coffee with sugar? Tea, sometimes, coffee, always. I’ve been told that I’ve only ever had bad coffee if I need sugar to drink it, but goddammit, I’m just addicted to sugar.5. What was your favourite book as a child? Really liked the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but also the Mortal Instruments and other teeny bopper novels.6. Do you prefer baths or showers? Love baths, but only once in a while, as a bittersweet treat. Definitely prefer showers.7. If you could be a mythical creature, which would you choose? MERMAID. MERMAIDMERMAIDMERMAID8. Do you prefer reading paper or electronic books? Paper. It’s less convenient, but there’s nothing else like it.9. What is your favourite item of clothing? Actually, it’s a tie between two of my dresses. One of them was $10 at the family dollar, and the other was clearanced at Target!11. Who is a mentor to you? My dad, hands down.12. Would you ever want to be famous? If so, what for? Sure! Perhaps for writing; if my book is good enough or I write a kickass screenplay that magically gets purchased by a triple A Hollywood studio, I get it made into a movie, then I can make sure Josh Brolin is cast in it…and Adam Driver…and Rami Malek…and Ilana Glazer…and all the other actors I have crushes on that I can’t currently remember right now…13. Are you a restless sleeper? Very sound one, actually. 15. Which element best represents you? I want to think water or earth. Or, alternatively, iron or magnesium.16. Who do you want to be closer to? Everybody! Specifically, a few of my coworkers, a couple of my friends, plenty of my family friends.17. Do you miss someone at the moment? Ironically, my roommate. Even though there’s been so much strife in our apartment lately due to the people she’s been seeing, I don’t blame her, and I miss her because of it. We live together but its been months since we really hung out the way I wish we could. It’s partially my fault, of course, but we won’t get into that.18. Tell us about an early childhood memory. I’m a writer, you should know better than to tell a story. It’s not a specific one, but a common one. Waking up, the sun shining through my window, getting up at my leisure, coming downstairs, and seeing my dad making pancakes in the kitchen. Our griddle was excessively smoky, so it was always hazier and the beams of sunlight were more visible. It smelled like batter and smoke and summer. I was always the first one up after my dad, so I’d help set the table, get all the syrup and butter set out. Then he’d wake up my sister, and I’d wake up my mom, and we’d all sit down for a nice breakfast together. He used a little bit of vanilla in his recipe, so the pancakes would taste a little extra cake like. I miss that shit; I’m excited to move away from this city, so that when I have to come back home for the holidays, I can stay with my parents, and come downstairs to them making food again.20. What can you see outside your bedroom window? A courtyard/garden, and an alley. 21. What are you most thankful for? My family, and myself.22. Do you like spicy food? YESSS I love it!!!23. Have you ever met someone famous? I met Grizz from 30 Rock, does that count? I also met a few YouTubers, but their famousness is more subjective than a tv star’s.24. Do you keep a diary or journal? A few, scattered around. I snapchat myself like a diary, I do free association diaries on an old Google account, I have a private Instagram where I post updates on my personal life. Depends on which details I want to share, where. Nothing physical, though.25. Do you prefer to use pen or pencil? I hate to choose between the two; pen is so permanent, distinct, but pencil is good for the ideas you aren’t sure about yet. I carry both with me at all times.26. What is your star sign? I’m a Sagittarius sun (Taurus moon, Libra ascendant, if you care about those things)27. Do you like your cereal crunchy or soggy? CRUNCHY! I don’t give a shit if Cap’n Crunch shreds the roof of my mouth, the CRUNCH is what I need28. What would you want your legacy to be? I want to be the best friggin Hufflepuff I can be, tbh29. Do you like reading? What was the last thing you read? I love it, but I usually only end up doing it on vacations. The last book I read was ‘IT’, months ago, but the last thing I read was probably fanfiction (maybe even my own, lmao, I love rereading and learning from my past writing choices).30. How do you show someone you love them? I’m actually tied in three ways for my top love language; I show my love any way I can, apparently. Gifts, vocal affirmations, physical touch, quality time, the whole nine yards. If I love you, you’ll know.31. Do you like ice in your drinks? Nope. Too coldy for my teethies.34. Do you address older people by their first or last name? I address people how they want to be addressed? I’m not sure how to answer this; I suppose in general I default to ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’ a lot, rather than saying actual names. Displays my playful spirit and a casual but sincere respect all at once.35. If money was not a factor, how would you live your life? On the road, coming home every few months. I want to live everywhere, for a little while. On the beach, in the mountains, in the forest, the desert. I wanna go everywhere and learn everything.36. Do you prefer swimming in pools or in the ocean? Pools, but only because of my love/hate relationship with the ocean. Thing’s massive and intrigues me so much, but I know better than to fuck with it for too long.37. What would you do if you found $50 on the ground? If it had been there a while, I’d keep it. If someone had just dropped it, I’d return it. I’m probably save it, maybe put it on my student loans, who knows.38. Have you ever seen a shooting star? Did you make a wish? I have! The first one I ever ‘saw’ I made up because my sister saw one before I did and I wanted to seem cool (I was seven, I think). But the first real one I saw was in a parking lot with a friend in high school. Felt magical, made a wish. Doubt it came true; it was probably a wish for a boyfriend lmao dumbass39. What is one thing you would want to teach your children? Patience. I know it can’t be taught, but I’d try my darnedest to see if I could at least give them a little bit of mine.41. What can you hear right now? I’m listening to my songs on shuffle, and currently its my favorite band Gorillaz’s song ‘Rhinestone Eyes’. There’s a dog panting on the floor, fan running on the ceiling, the A/C is quietly humming.42. Where do you feel the safest? The house I grew up in. You can’t fuck with me there, it’s like the Asgard to my Hela, I get all my power from it.43. What is one thing you want to overcome/conquer? I want to conquer my GD writer’s block so I can write some good original shit.44. If you could travel back to any era, which would you choose? THE 80S!!!! PLEASE, let me go back to the 80s, I would’ve killed it. High waisted shorts, hi-tops, the music, the lack of internet…sounds dreamy.45. What is your most used emoji? 💕 47. How would you spend your ideal day? Go to a morning movie stoned, perhaps by myself, get some killer lunch, hangout with my family for a bit, maybe get dinner or make dinner, end the night with a smoke sesh with my girls and in bed by 10:30.49. What do you regret the most? Not getting closure with a lot of people.50. Invent your own word. What does it mean? Uhhhh……..I’ll get back to you on that one.

instead of working on any major project or any prompt I did this because I’m sick and sand and I wanted to write something with Jack being sick and sad
it’s not very good but orz just take it
“Rhys,” Jack mumbles around a spoon, “this soup sucks.”
Rhys acknowledges him only with an annoyed hiss and a slight roll of the eyes as he pulls the spoon back from between Jack’s lips and soaks it back into the bowl. Sure, the celery kind of dissolved into the broth and turned it a bit green and he might not have added enough salt, but the carrots and chicken and noodles are all good quality and taste fine to Rhys, so he doesn’t know where Jack iss coming from.
The older man snorts, and coughs, and audibly sucks snot up through his nose. Rhys cringes as he stirs the soup, trying to seek out a heartier morsel.
“I dunno what you’re talking about. It’s not that bad. Also I’m not sure I trust the taste buds of the guy who’s stuffed to the gills with mucus.”
“A palate as mighty as mine can’t be defeated by a friggin’ cold,” Jack waggles his finger from within the folds of the blanket wrapped around him like a cocoon. Only his head and hands pop out from the butter yellow comforter, making him look like some kind of weird monster. The Great Golden Hyperion Sniffler, or something.
“All right, Mr. Master Chef, open up ‘cause you’re not gonna get anything else until you get better.” Rhys waves the laden spoon in front of Jack’s lips, holding the bowl underneath to catch any dripping. Jack frowns deeply, breathing through his nose muffled as he narrows his eyes at the spoon.
“Think I’d rather starve…”
“Nuh-uh, no starving. The King of Hyperion isn’t going to die just because he doesn’t want to eat his boyfriend’s soup,” Rhys admonishes as he wiggles the spoon in front of Jack’s lips.
“C’mon now don’t be a wimp. See, here’s comes the bandit, launching out of the airlock!”
Luckily for Rhys, that gets Jack to snicker, leaving him an opening to slip the spoon between his boyfriend’s lips. Jack grunts and glared, but swallows down the spoonful nonetheless, his grimace this time around a little less dramatic.
“When I’m back to full strength, I’ve got to give you some friggin’ cooking lessons, pumpkin,” Jack grouses as he settles back against the headboard, shaky hands dragging the comforter tighter about himself.
“That’s plenty of motivation for you to get better, then. Once you kick this flu, I promise you won’t have to eat my soup ever again.” Rhys dids around the bowl for a big piece of chicken and a couple of dripping noodles. “But until then…”
Jack moans, flopping his head back as he snorts mucus back into his swollen nose.
“Please, kiddo, no more torture….and I’ve like, actually been tortured so I know what I’m talking about.”
“Okay, drama queen.” Rhys nestles the soup in his lap, holding up a finger. “One more bite, and I’ll put the rest in the fridge, okay?”
“In the fridge? Kiddo, I think you know where that belongs, in the tras—“
“Shush.” Rhys shoves the last spoonful into Jack’s helpless mouth, quickly dropping it back into the bowl as Jack struggles to swallow it down. “You’re really mouthy for someone who is apparently sick.”
“I am sick.” Jack licks his cracked lips as he snuggles back against his pillow, eyes starting to flutter shut. “What….do I need to be….blowin’ chunks everywhere for you to believe me…”
“I’d prefer if you kept my soup down, thanks,” Rhys chuckles as he rises, cradling the soup in one hand as the other tugs the blankets tighter around Jack’s body and checks his temperature. Mollified for now, Rhys pats Jack atop the head, earning a sleepy grumble and an abortive swat. He dims the bedroom lights on his way out, leaving Jack to rest in the dark and quiet as he returns to the kitchen to keep the soup for later.
Things are fairly  boring around the penthouse with Jack laid up and ill.
Rhys usually occupies himself with organizing Jack’s inevitable clutter or spending his time watching television or playing on one of the many game systems, and if neither of those tickle his fancy he browses the ECHOnet on his palm display. He usually flips through new options for his wardrobe or plays any of the little mini games that have come installed with his operating system, but the needling fact that Jack is ill, even with something as mundane as the flu, keeps him from relaxing enough to properly enjoy any of the aforementioned activities. He hops from one to the next to the next, with not enough focus to linger on one for much longer than a few minutes. After about an hour of foiled distractions, he finally decides to make himself a grilled cheese and curl on the couch, where he gratefully ends up falling asleep snuggled around one of the firm throw pillows.
He wakes up for no clear reason sometime later, moaning softly to himself as he drags into an upright position, rubbing his eyes and ruffling his fingers back through his hair as he squints towards the digital clock on the entertainment center, though considering he can’t remember when he fell asleep, it doesn’t particularly help.
Rhys wobbles to his feet and retrieves two cool glasses of water from the kitchen, draining the first himself as he carries the other to the bedroom.
He creeps softly inside, letting the door drift shut behind him as he approaches the bed. Jack had rolled out of his previous cocoon and now lies on his side, sleeping curled up in the fetal position and facing the huge space window.
Rhys sits on the bed and knocks the glass against the nightstand a little too loudly, and he expects Jack to stir and groan at him for being so loud, but to Rhys’ surprise Jack stays motionless and—more surprisingly—quiet.
Rhys leans sideways on his hand, peering over Jack’s form as his heart picks up, puzzled. The comforter curls around Jack’s head like a hood, hiding his face from view. Rhys worries his lip, reaching forward and tugging the blanket away.
Jack isn’t asleep.
His eyes are half open, lids vibrating like they’d been plucked, fluttering between wanting to shut and forcing themselves open. Rhys can’t see any pupils or irises, only mottled white, even in the eye he knows to be undamaged and seeing. Jack’s skin has lost the reserve of color, even around his swollen nose and eyes, making the scar slashed across his face stand out, stark and cold. Rhys puts a hand against his forehead and gasps at the heat, even as Jack’s whole body shivers underneath the blankets.
“Jack? Holy shit, Jack!” Rhys’ voice rises urgently above a whisper as he rubs Jack’s shoulders, shaking him in hopes he’d snapped out of the fugue and tell him to screw of, but Jack only whines in a tone Rhys has never heard before, that sends his stomach twisting into one big worried knot.
Rhys ends up summoning Jack’s personal doctor in on a house call after a couple more panicked moments. He stays by Jack’s side until she comes, keeping a rag cool and wet as he rubs it over the older man’s forehead. He whispers to him until he’s lost track of what exactly he’s saying, the constant mumbling as much a comfort to himself as he hopes it is to Jack. The sound of the security door chiming finally breaks him out of it and he rises on shaky legs, taking glances over his shoulder at Jack until he manages to break away and skirt through the living room, quickly opening the door and inviting the doctor in.
He wrings the end of his tie in hand as he watches her tend to Jack. The lump in his throat refuses to go down as he looks on. He isn’t really listening to what the doctor is saying, but her voice was cool and calm and her hands assured, even as Jack’s limbs flop limp as she turns him onto his back and parts the sweat-stained blankets around his chest. Rhys knots his tie anxiously between his fingers as she records Jack’s temperature and presses her stethoscope to his chest, taking stock of his breathing.
“I’m going to put him on a fluid drip just in case,” the doctor’s measured, calm voice is a balm to Rhys’ anxiety as he nods, letting her go about her business as he numbly watches, trying not to think about the reedy, thin breaths drifting in and out of Jack’s open mouth. The doctor thankfully hides Jack’s arm with her body as she slips the needle into the vein in his forearm, wrapping it up with gauze. She hooks the bag up on a collapsible stand, letting the saline drain down with the aid of gravity.
She gives Rhys two small white bottles—one of fever reducers, one of painkillers—and a request to call her if things grow worse, then leaves Rhys alone in the dim light of the bedroom.
He sits back down heavily against the bed, before scooting to the edge, afraid to jostle Jack any more. He keeps his hands in his lap, the pills in the bottles clacking softly as he turns them over in his hands before leaning to set them against the nightstand.
It’s far too quiet.
Rhys can hear only the weak, raspy sound of Jack’s breathing, in time with the shallow rise and fall of his chest. It’s both too much, and not enough, and he can’t take it.
“You scared the hell out of me, you know that?” Rhys murmurs as he rests his hand against Jack’s shoulder, rubbing slowly down to the crook of his elbow before traveling back up, careful not to disturb the IV pulsing into his forearm. Jack’s doesn’t respond, but he seems calmer, now, less caught up in the throes of fever. Though peaceful resting doesn’t exactly suit him either, Rhys feels. If Jack hadn’t been ill and needing to recover, Rhys might be tempted to poke and prod him until he wakes up and gives Rhys a chance to hear the bite of that comforting snark.
The awkward quiet is a rough pill to swallow, so Rhys fills it aimlessly, murmuring aloud to his boyfriend about anything at all as he carefully strokes Jack’s arm, occasionally changing and wetting the cloth on his forehead.
Maybe, Rhys thinks, if he speaks like Jack is awake and acerbic as always instead of listless and hooked up to fluids, he soon will be.

Blowing bubbles
SEPTEMBER
Well here we are.
Knee-deep in Standard Operating Procedures, post-summer hols back at school, but at least back at school, rather than confined to a wardrobe (admittedly, a large wardrobe) trying to teach virtually, locked-down, doubled down, terrorised by my own children. The horror, the horror.
Briefly, the Virtual School Experience flickered back to life this week as a local water contamination that affected the entire Klang Valley dragged its heels. The taps in the classrooms sputtered. Talk was we wouldn’t be able to flush the loos. Giant water tankers delivered so much, but not possibly enough.
The last thing you need during a pandemic: a lack of means of washing hands.
Thankfully, it lasted a day before it was resolved.
What a summer it was, though. Not the one we expected, although we can’t be alone in that. Instead of returning home, we made a new home, moving from one enormous condo unit to another. Less than 100m as the crow flies.
Still a job to pack up.
JULY
We trolley boxes across the basement carparks, dodging speed bumps and squealing slow-moving cars.
We buy enormous plants at ridiculously cheap prices to pad out the space a bit.
I spend close to two hours with the owner of our previous condo unit and the housing agents, arguing over imagined damage to the property.
In the end I win. But everyone also loses. It’s a compromise.
I meet one of the agents later that afternoon out front, jumping into a cab. I need a drink she says. I know the feeling.
In between before and after packing up and down, we master short hops to impossibly beautiful destinations.
JULY-AUGUST--ISH
We spend several hundred ringgos in Decathlon in preparation. We visit a dive shop in a mall beside a purpose built Scuba diving-training-swimming pool. Two men, one bare-chested, sit at a table beside, swigging from a bottle of whisky. I guess lockdown affected some businesses more than others.
First up, Perhentian Besar, where friends John and Christine make friends with everyone.
Tumblr media
Where the kids take telly breaks inside, sheltered from the lapis blue skies. We use dive mask boxes as crisp buckets.
I take trips to the peer to eyeball the local triggerfish as it nibbles at barnacles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We take a boat trip to neighbouring Perhentian Kecil and walk past one of our neighbours from KL. A storm creeps over the hill as we sip cocktails and attempt to distract the children from their boredom. We nearly get stranded but our boatman basically decides to roll the dice with our lives and before long we’re bouncing off the waves with hair-shredding winds whipping across and sea spray more like shower spray dousing us. No more boats travel that evening as the waves grow even bigger.
THE THIRD TRIP - PENANG
We check in to a lovely hotel with hands-down the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Several other friends and their children from KL are all in the same hotel.
By day we take in local sites along and about the Batu Ferringhi stretch. Penang Butterfly Farm is vast, and predictably, it is filled with butterflies.
It’s also filled with other things.
Spiders, scorpions and a toad, I kid yeeeee not, as big as a melon. Not quite a watermelon, but a very decently sized cantaloupe.
Most of the spiders are behind glass. Amazingly, one enclosure has no glass. Just a big empty space. Couple wispy bits of spiderweb reach right out into the corridor. I practically walk through them as I approach to see what’s inside. Nothing, apparently.
That spider could be anywhere in the entire Butterfly Farm.
I spend the rest of the visit with that thought on my mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By late afternoon/evening, we hit the beach bars.
The beach keeps the kids happy.
The bar keeps the adults happy. Everyone’s a winn-
KIT GET OUT OF THE SEA! KIT! KI-
He’s deliberately ignoring me. He’s started doing this loads.
KIT! KIT! KI-IIIIIT!
Now his shorts and t-shirt are soaking. Great. Soon his nappy will be hanging round his knees, soaked with seawater.
One night, we witness a proposal at the beach bar.
The eagle-eyed can tell something is afoot from the moment we arrive- there’s pink balloons, fake flower petals and candles set out in front of the VIP booth bit. No future groom no bride to speak of yet though.
Tumblr media
Clearly, balloons are interesting to small children.
It’s a job keeping them away from the flower petals too. Let alone the candles. Eventually they start splashing about in the water instead.
Inside, there’s at least three photographers circling.
There’s a change in music.
Someone Has Arrived.
There’s a general movement towards the balloons and flower petals and candles at which point the children regain an interest in it all. They gambol over in the end-of-the-day, anything could happen, I’m-on-holiday-too and if-you’re-not-going-to-provide-entertainment-I’ll-make-my-own sort of way.
One photographer shoots me a look of sheer, unbridled terror.
I do my best cat-herding, distract and befuddle the children with a mixture of unfulfilled offers, bribes and bird noise imitation. It works.
Moments later the bride-to-be saunters through with a friend.
Then, all the bits you’d expect. Hands on mouth. Gasps. Grins. Searching the faces in the crowd for her suitor.
He’s not there.
A band emerges from around the corner. Actually, no, a group of her friends. One has a boom box and they’re all singing terribly, kicking sand playfully and moving slowly. I don’t recognise the tune. But that could be down to their singing.
A few more moments later, and from behind us a horse jerkily walks towards this scene. On top, a man dressed in an oversize Mickey Mouse costume, who clearly has never ridden a horse in his life.
I’m no Frankie Dettori, but I can tell this guy doesn’t know the front end from the back of a horse.
He struggles to dismount.
He’s got these giant clown-shoes on and he gets them caught in the stirrups, then his head lolls forward as he tries to look down at the snag. Eventually, he makes it onto one knee. Later the kids squabble over balloons and Kit is beyond inconsolable when they are released to the sky. It’s a clear night, which makes it worse. He watches them sail away for ages.
We while away the rest of the night to the sound of the house band. Two guys. A guitar and a drum set made of old tins, teapots and gas cans. It’s a marvel to behold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE FOURTH TRIP - PANGKOR LAUT
Now this place. This place really take the biscuit.
The last hurrah of the summer holidays before back to work. A private friggin island. When else can I say I have visited a private island.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s hornbills everywhere. There’s infinity pools. There’s a massive tree filled with flying foxes that sweep across the sky at night. There’s a little minibus that takes you to the other side of the island, to a secluded bay and another gorgeous beach. It’s simply idyllic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s also a pack of marauding macaques that sniff out the packet of dried apricots that the ants had already sniffed out. Left outside our room door, they come hungry for it. By that point we’d already gone to the beach. The Mutters, next door, hadn’t though. They ended up barricaded in for a while as the macaques descended.
Tumblr media
The clientele at the island is not what we’ve experienced so far. Comes with a place like that I guess. Everyone is visibly less patient, less enamoured with and less pleased by our children. I mean. I don’t really blame them.
THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT TRIP / THE THIRD TRIP
Langkawi. Ah, Langkawi.
West coast beaches are definitely not east coast beaches. But it’s still a giant playground for an under 5. Bliss.
Our hotel has the world’s most incredible swimming pools (yes, pools) with slides and bridges and water spouts and people who give you ginormous towels and a 5 foot monitor lizard, one day, who decided to take a dip.
We watch a parent eagle teaching its young to fly. We watch coconut tree shimmiers machete off coconuts and leaves. We zip off to the other side of the island and Stanley Mutter, aka Crab God, charms the local fauna. Then we go home, unpack, wash everything and start thinking about what to pack for the next trip.

salty asks: 10, 16, 25 (for black sails, bc you deserve to ramble)
you’re so good to me
Most disliked arc? Why?
prooobably eleanor/rogers because, while i’m here for the conflict of bi’s trying to pass and be respectable or whatever, her man SUCKED. worst of all, she wasn’t allowed to see what the viewers could see, so in one scene, we see her changing her whole life–her wardrobe, her goals, and her alliances–to support what he wants, and in the very next scene, where she is not present, he’s being a complete and utter shit who doesn’t deserve any of what she’s doing. it’s like a cruel joke the show played on her that everyone else was in on. she was never my favorite character, but it just felt disrespectful.
If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?
silver is my favorite character in the show and a lot of that is due to luke arnold’s performance, but they should have cast a disabled actor for the last two seasons. it’s even part of his arc that he renders himself unrecognizable after he loses his leg, like, come on. the best roles for disabled characters are almost never played by disabled actors and that is a big problem.
How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?
i don’t know how to do this, and ultimately this would involve more than just the last episode or two, but there should’ve been more madi. the writers get a lot of credit for taking this one fact from treasure island, silver is married to a black woman, and making her a committed, smart, friggin’ warrior queen. but the issue there is, who can see this woman who lives for her people becoming a proper wife running an english inn with her shady husband? i mean, i’m a fic-writer, i’m extrapolating the fuck out of it, but viewers shouldn’t have to work that hard. it’s just a massive disconnect.

Miley Cyrus Was Quarantined in Sweats and a Top Knot, but This Shoot Changed Everything
WSJ. Magazine tapped Miley Cyrus to star on the cover of the digital June issue, but there was a twist: she had to style herself completely and take her own portraits, being that she's quarantined at home just like everybody else. Did you expect her to turn down an opportunity like that? Of course not; she impressed us with her colorful wardrobe as she always does. Miley's interview centers largely around her new show, Bright Minded, which has been a real highlight and treat, brightening our lives and also providing a learning experience to her fans and followers through one-on-one interviews. "It's hilarious people call this a TV show when it's just Instagram Live," Miley told WSJ.
Miley coordinated interviews with Demi Lovato, Hailey Bieber, and Selena Gomez, to name a few, but when she got to talk to Senator Elizabeth Warren in episode 19, that's when wardrobe, hair, and makeup choices really came into play.
"Oh, my God! With Elizabeth Warren, I was so nervous I even put on a nice linen blouse. I don't even own a friggin' blouse! Everything in my closets is studded or leather or latex, honey. So I'm going through my damn closet, like, What am I going to wear to interview the friggin' senator? That was my main stress, of course. How am I going to serve political realness? But a lot of the time it's been important for me to be wearing what everyone else is wearing at home. I'm in my sweatpants and a topknot, just like everyone else. I've only washed my hair twice for the show: once for Elton John and once for Senator Warren," Miley told WSJ. Magazine.
Miley ended up choosing an oversize white blouse, freshly pressed, and a gold choker necklace for the occasion, which is definitely a streamlined look for her and a far cry from the clothes she dressed up in for the WSJ. shoot you'll see ahead. Frankly, we're kind of glad Miley reserved these wild outfits for this moment - her peace sign jumpsuit, "Wash Your Hands" graphic tee, and scale-like, PVC halter completely brightened my day, and it's amazing that Miley can do that without even speaking a word.
Keep reading to see Miley's self-styled shoot in full, then read her full WSJ. Magazine interview that's nothing short of empowering.

Fic Writers Week: Day 1
Words Of Validation - Fic Readers, take some time to leave new comments / Fic Writers, share some of the comments that stuck with you the most.
I’ve left some comments on the PL AO3. I can’t thank you enough if you’ve ever read, left kudos/favourites/follows or commented on my fics. Here are some comments that stuck with me under the cut mostly from anons, I’ll be calling out Unsung Heroes later. May contain spoilers for my fics.
The most hilarious response I’ve gotten for killing off a canon character during a fic:
‘NOOOOOO. WHY WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT, NOW I'M CRYING ALMOST AS MUCH AS I DID AT THE REICHENBACH FALL. AAAAAARG’
Thank you, Anon. This comment still makes me laugh.
An adorable and slightly condensed comment on Chapter 13 of Reset:
‘I'm a mega-sucker for the "Triton Investigation Family" deal that's going on with this series. I love the Triton family and their interactions and you could literally bury me alive with nothing but Triton fics and I'd survive for over 100 years on nothing but that. Ok maybe not. I'd still need water and oxygen and stuff. But you get what I mean.... (Also, tfw u might have to make out with your friend that's in your hubby's body but making out with your friend is awkward and who knows if it'll actually work. Prayer circle for Brenda friggin' Triton, the closest thing to a Layton-figure before Descole decided to go all Whistler on poor Clark.)’
Thank you for loving the Triton family. And yes, prayer circle for Brenda. She deserves it.
A comment that made me cry for this fic:
‘It's stories like these that make me wonder if you're actually a famous author hiding under the guise of a lowly fanfiction writer. Okay, maybe not lowly, but still. The Mocking J legacy lives on!’
Well... I’m still not a famous author, but I’m happy being a fic writer when it means reading touching comments like this. Thank you, anonymous PotatoNeko!
The first comment of the first chapter of the first fic I, uh, ever wrote. The Layton, The Witch and The Top Hat. There’s a link if you want to laugh at my younger self’s writing.
‘I can tell this is going to be interesting, i honestly never thought someone would make a Layton fic based on that book (or movie, whatever). But still, this first chapter was just... Unnecesary, to say the least; as far as i know, this is your first story, and if you really feel the urge to introduce yourself to the community, then it's way more professional-looking that you did so in your profile or in an author note at the start or end of the chapter and not transforming a simple "hello" in a... "complete" chapter. Besides, you did a self-insert, you know, you talking and interacting with the official characters, and that stopped being so accepted in the reader community, being that it usually ends becoming stupid and all, and it's a fountain of Mary Sueish experience...
Don't take it personal, it's just some advice, and i'm looking forward the next chapter; i'm just hoping you consider my words.
See you soon.’
Basically, a naive ‘authoress’ named MJ wanted to write a parody of C.S. Lewis’s masterpiece The Lion. The Witch and The Wardrobe. But she also wanted to insert herself into the story with fourth wall breaking author’s  “director’s” notes.
I’m so thankful to this commenter for being critical and honest, but fair. It was an eye-opener. That prologue (if you can even call it that) was pretty pointless and the self-insert was a Mary Sue... who loved a poorly characterised Clive Dove. (She even has a Mary Sue trial at one point.) But maybe because it was a comedy, I can still read it now and cringe and laugh at the ridiculous writing, formatting and characterisation. (Some of the writing does seem inappropriate now, so I’m sorry for that. I’m not entirely proud of it.)

Installment the First
Or, The Adventure Begins
Disclaimer: I don’t own the canon characters, obv. I’ve just stolen their souls for my own purposes. The MCs are a melting pot of my imagination, real interactions, and silliness.
Disclaimer 2: If you haven’t seen season four yet, spoilers will probably abound. Ye have been warned.
Part the first: Where we meet the fangirls and they encounter our favorite #bromance
“This is silly.” Addie pulled her peacoat more tightly around her and blew into her hands to warm them.  She’d been the one to talk her sister Mal into this impromptu meetup with some of their online fandom friends. But now they were wandering beside Conscience Bay in Setauket, Long Island at ten o’clock at night in December in an attempt to feel some connection to the area’s history.
“Yeah, it’s freezing out here,” Mal agreed, stopping next to Addie. She let out a frustrated huff when their companions continued along the road, looking for a clearing to get to the edge of the water they'd been following for three blocks.
“Not the weather,” Addie pressed. “I mean, I love Turn, and I love Revolutionary History, but this place wasn’t even much to look at when we saw it during the day. What are we doing?”
“It’s awesome at night,” Leena called back over her shoulder. “Come on!”
“We might even see a ghost!” June, leading the group, shouted.
“Not if she keeps screaming like that,” Mal said, nudging Addie.
Addie smirked. “The guide this afternoon didn’t say anything about it being haunted, did he?”
Leena slowed down to match the sisters' pace. “Not that we know of,” she said, the light from the full moon making her toothy grin luminescent. “But last time I came, I swear I saw someone on the water. It was too dark to see who it was, though.”
“And you think it was Caleb Brewster coming from Washington’s camp to collect intelligence?” Addie asked, unable to suppress a bemused smile.
“Maaaaybe. Not going to rule it out!” Leena giggled before hurrying to catch up to June.
Addie looked at Mal, the unspoken question of What have we gotten ourselves into hanging between the sisters.
“Friggin’ Twitter,” Mal muttered. They'd never met the other women in person before, and knew them only from the online fan group they were part of. “This would have been so much better if Steph had showed up.” Of all of their online friends, Steph had been the one to connect the most with Mal. Part of the reason Mal’d agreed to come at all was because Steph was also going. Except she’d had to cancel at the last minute because of a work obligation.
“We’ve had a good time up to now,” Addie allowed. Mal rolled her eyes. “Okay, like I said, this part seems silly. I don’t know what they think we’ll find out there, but I guess it beats just sitting in the B&B, right?”
“Get a fire going, make some hot chocolate, binge Turn –“ Mal shivered as another wintery blast buffeted against the treeline. “It’s going to friggin’ snow. Let’s just go back.”
Addie looked up at the sky, the stars clearly visible. “It isn’t going to snow,” she challenged.
“It should snow if it’s going to be this cold,” Mal complained.
“Let’s hurry up a bit, then,” Addie suggested. “We can catch up to June and Leena.” The other women had already disappeared around a bend in the road, and Addie was nervous that they were no longer in sight.
Mal made an irritated grunt, but quickened her pace to match Addie’s.
A scream pierced the hush of the evening. Addie and Mal looked at each other, eyes wide, before both breaking into a run and calling their friends’ names.
When they reached Leena and June, the other women were giggling, laying on the ground.
“What happened?” Addie asked, looking for any signs that they’d been hurt.
“Leena thought she saw a ghost and pulled us both down when she tried to get away from it,” June laughed. “Ghost turned out to be a dang squirrel! Pullin’ me down here,” she admonished. “Break my hip if you’re not careful!” June was twenty years older than the others, though she was in far better shape.
“Leena’s more likely to break her hip than you are,” Addie pointed out. “And I thought you wanted to find ghosts,” Addie laughed, offering a hand up to Leena as Mal did the same for June.
“Yeah, but – maybe not when I’m not expecting it, y’know?” Leena brushed off the back of her jeans and looked around. “Anyway, we’re here! This is where I saw him last time!”
Addie found herself peering out at the water, squinting her eyes as though that would show her the ghostly whaleboatman.
“What are we doing?” A voice whispered in Addie’s ear and she jumped, embarrassed by the resounding squeak of fear that escaped her lips. She spun around and exhaled as the others began to laugh.
Steph had made it, after all.
“Not funny,” Addie admonished, her heart still racing.
Steph was grinning. “It was a little funny,” she said before hugging Addie. “It’s so great to finally meet all of you!” She hugged the others in turn – and Addie was glad to see Mal smiling – finally.
“Ugh, sorry I missed the first couple of days,” Steph said once the hellos had been finished. “Work is so unpredictable. But I’m here now, ready to sink my teeth into history and all things Turn! So what’re we doing? Ghost hunting? Dibs on our illustrious spy leader if he shows up.”
“If Ben shows up, honey, I’ll fight you for him,” June said. “Ghost or not, I’d sink my teeth into that boy any day of the week!”
“OMG, cougar alert!” Leena giggled.
“I might be older than y’all, but my eyes work just fine,” June said with a smirk.
Addie laughed and shook her head. “So what now?”
“Let’s build a fire!” Leena suggested, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “We can all sit around it and do a round-robin fanfic!” She put her hands – hidden inside her slightly too long jacket sleeves – up in front of her face as she tried not to giggle again. The result was a high-pitched noise that sounded suspiciously like a mouse squeak.
“A fire?” Addie shook her head. “I’m not sure we’re even supposed to be out here, let alone trying to start a fire.“
“I’m with Addie,” Steph said. “Besides, I’m starving. I drove straight from D.C. and haven’t eaten anything since lunch.”
“We’ll head back to the road, see if anything is open,” Mal suggested. “It’s almost midnight, so I don’t think – son-of-a-“ she let a low growl finish the sentence as snow began to drift lazily to the ground. She turned to her sister. “No snow, huh?”
Addie looked up again. The stars were as bright and clear as they had been ten minutes before. “That doesn’t make any sense,” she said, frowning.
“So we head back,” Leena said, reaching up to put one arm around Steph’s shoulders and the other around Mal’s. The shortest of the quintet, what she actually managed was a hand up to her wrist on either girl's taller frame. “Find something to nom on and get back to the bed and breakfast before it decides to go full-on blizzard.”
Addie was still frowning up at the sky. “So we’re going to completely ignore the fact that there are no clouds for the snow to be falling from, yeah?”
“You just can’t see them,” June said without glancing up. “It couldn’t be snowing like this without clouds. Hey! Y’all know what we need?”
“Flaming Dr. Pepper shots!” they cried out in unison, all of them laughing.
"I don't know if there's a bar within walking distance," Addie said as she and June caught up to the others.
"Everything's within walking distance technically," Steph said. "Just depends on how far you want to walk. Besides, if the snow picks up, we don't want to be driving around in it, right?"
Mal raised her fist in the air. "Here's to being stuck in a bar and getting hammered while we discuss a certain Major Tightpants!"
Addie laughed along with the others. Much of their online threads seemed to center around the wardrobe choices of the characters, the most infamous being the snug breeches of Benjamin Tallmadge, leader of the American spy ring. She shook her head. "Because being wasted and trying to walk through a storm is a much better idea."
"Maybe Caleb's ghost will be there. He can walk us home!" Leena suggested.
"Didn't he die in Connecticut?" June asked.
"He did," Steph confirmed. "And Ben, too."
"Aww, the bromance continued after the war!" Mal laughed. "That's so cute!"
"So then why would he be haunting a bar that didn't even exist when he lived here?" June pressed. "That makes no sense!"
"Maybe the bars he haunts in Connecticut ran out of whiskey," Addie said.
"Or they tried to give him tea," Mal snickered.
The joking had distracted them. They stopped at the corner and looked up to the street sign to get their bearings - but couldn't see it. The snow had gradually reduced visibility without their noticing, and none of them knew quite where they were.
"Holy crap, it's really coming down now," Mal said. "Addie? Pull up GPS on your phone or something."
Addie complied, pulling out her phone and scrolling through her apps until she found the one for directions. She tapped on it, and frowned as it opened to a white screen, the 'processing' icon spinning. "It usually doesn't take this long to start," she said. "Probably the storm." The network icon at the top showed  NO SERVICE in red. "Dammit!" She showed the phone to her sister.
The other women pulled out their phones. There was a chorus of 'mine, too' as they checked their network status.
"Maybe the storm knocked out a tower," Leena suggested.
They all glanced around - except for the denseness of the snow, the 'storm' had very little teeth. An intermittent wind nipped at their faces, but the night was otherwise perfectly still.
"Well we can't just go on standin’ in the middle of the street,” June pointed out.
"Are we in the middle of the street, though?" Steph bent down and brushed the snow away from the ground immediately around her. "Grass," she muttered. "We were on pavement, weren't we?"
"Snow without clouds, disappearing pavement - anybody else freaked out yet?" Addie asked.
"Look, there's an explanation -"
"Be quiet, Mal." Addie held up her hand to silence her sister, her head tilted, listening to the sounds around them. A muffled exhalation of breath was followed by the crunching of snow. "There," she whispered when she heard it again. "Someone's coming."
"Help! We're poor tourists who have lost our way!" Leena laughed. The others shooshed her. A horse's nicker came in response.
"What the -" Addie frowned, shrugging as they all glanced at each other. Addie’s heart thudded against her ribcage painfully. Something wasn’t right.
A horse and rider cut through the storm, parting the snow as though it were a curtain. A second was right behind it.
The women gaped.
Mal grabbed Addie's arm. "Is that -"
Addie could only nod as the first rider turned his horse in front of them, his sabre drawn. His blue and buff uniform was spotless, topped with a plumed hat – it was Ben Tallmadge.
“Identify yourselves!” he demanded, eyes raking over the group.
The second rider circled behind them, effectively blocking any escape attempt they might have made.
The women huddled a little closer together, but didn’t answer.
The wind tugged at their coats and hats like a child wanting attention. Addie’s hat blew off, and she turned as she tried to grab it – with no success.
“Dammit,” she muttered, looking up at the second rider. Her heart stopped. The snow was still falling, but the long leather coat and cocked wide-brimmed hat were instantly recognizable to her as Caleb Brewster.
Addie grabbed Mal's hand.
"But the last season of Turn is already airing," June said. "Did you get picked up by Netflix? Oh my God. Are you filming right now?"
"Filmin'?" Caleb asked, looking across their heads at Ben. He dismounted, reins in hand as he looked at each of them. “They’re all women, Tallboy!”
“No call for rudeness!” June huffed.
Ben dismounted as well, coming around to stand by Caleb. He sheathed his sabre and sighed, hands on his hips.
“It isn’t rudeness, Madam. It’s surprise,” he said. “When you dress like a man, you should be prepared to be seen as a man – and a threat.”
"This is awesome," Leena giggled behind Addie.
And terrifying, Addie thought.
“’Dress like a man?’” Mal scoffed. “Steph, is this you?” Steph often boasted about her connections with the show – connections she never explicitly defined, but did always seem to result in inside knowledge.
She also liked her practical jokes.
Addie started to breathe a little easier. That’s all this was. It’s all it could be.
“Not me,” Steph said. “Shit. This is not me.” Her voice wavered. So did Addie’s relief.
“So – not on a set,” Addie said, her eyes locked on the men. “This is – real?”
"But if they’re supposed to really be Tallmadge and Brewster, they wouldn’t look just like -"
"I know," Addie said, hushing her sister. "I didn't say I could explain it."
“Don’t remember tellin’ you who I was,” Caleb said, head tilted to the side. His eyes flicked to Ben’s and then back to Mal.  “Suppose ya tell me how it is you seem to know.” His hand was on the top of the axe at his waist, his body rigid, waiting.
Mal squeezed Addie’s hand. Addie could feel the tremor running through her sister. She squeezed back.
“Well, hell, boys. Everyone knows wherever Tallmadge goes, Brewster’s at his heel,” June said, her words easing Mal’s trembling.
“And Brewster’s axe is legend on its own,” Steph said. “We just connected the dots. Sir,” she added when Caleb remained still. Only his eyes moved, back to Ben.
Ben gave a curt nod, and Caleb’s body relaxed. He folded his hands in front of him and straightened his neck, walking around the group, looking each of them up and down in turn.
Addie felt the heat rising from under her coat collar as Caleb passed. He stopped when he’ d made a full circuit of the group.
“None of ‘em are armed,” he conveyed to Ben.
Ben nodded, his posture becoming less stiff. “Identify yourselves,” he repeated, his voice still firm.
Steph made her way to the front of the group, pushing Mal and Addie apart in her haste. "Stephanie Beecham," she said, giving a perfect curtsey, one ankle crossed behind the other.
Addie glanced at Mal behind Steph's back, knowing the smirk that graced her sister's face was mirrored on her own. Mal shrugged and shook her head.
"Miss Beecham." Ben nodded stiffly.
"Addie Hunt," Addie offered with an exhalation and a nod in response to Ben's.
"Mal Gower." Mal thrust out her hand. Caleb cast a bemused look at Ben, then stepped forward and shook it. Addie found herself wishing she'd been as bold.
"Leena Owens." Leena's voice squeaked as she stood on her tiptoes to be seen over the other women.
"June Cort." June stuck her hand over Mal's left shoulder, palm down. Caleb looked back at Ben again, then took it and pressed his lips to it. June grinned. Her face, already red from the cold, deepened in color.
"Right. Now we all know each other." Caleb hooked his thumbs in his belt and stepped back, his head tilting to the side. “Mind tellin’ us just what you’re all doin’ wanderin’ around here in the middle of the night?”
“And how you managed to get past the posted sentries?” Ben added.
“Posted sentries?” Addie echoed.
“Aye, the sentries,” Caleb said. “The lads done up in blue and buff that are posted around the perimeter of our line.”
Oh, God. The war hasn’t ended yet, Addie thought. Her heart felt as though it would burst. Being here, mere feet from the living, breathing incarnations of what had effectively been an obsession for four years should have been exhilarating.
But they’d somehow been transported into the show – or at least the world the show inhabited – and these were very real people.
With very real guns.
"We were just in Setauket," Leena offered.
"Setauket?” Caleb snickered. “Yeah, give or take 100 miles.”
Leena blushed and grabbed June's hand. "He spoke right to me!" Her voice wasn't above a whisper, but they all easily heard it.
Caleb looked at Ben, an amused smirk spreading across his face.
“100 miles from Setauket?” Mal whispered to Addie. “How did that happen?”
“Sure, that’s the weird part of all this,” she whispered back.
"Never heard any of them names around Setauket," Caleb pointed out. “How ‘bout you, Ben?”
"’Course we’re not from Setauket, " June said. “We were just visiting family."
"Yeah, we’re cousins of the DeJong's," Mal finished, giving her sister a perfunctory nod.
"Cousins?" Ben asked, nodding. "All five of you?"
They nodded. "Distant," Steph said. "There was um a -"
"Wedding," Leena said. Addie suppressed a groan. Weddings were something they could check on. Although, come to think of it, so was the existence of visiting cousins. This wasn’t make believe. If they were taken back to camp and their stories checked, then found to be false - she began to fidget.
“Mind tellin’ us what you’re doin’ out here, then?” Caleb asked. “Like I said, it’s a long way from Setauket.”
Each of them looked to the others for some kind of direction.
“We got lost?” Steph said.
“Lost.” Ben’s voice was flat, his free hand on his sabre hilt. “You expect us to believe you just - wandered up here from Setauket, through enemy lines?”
“So we’re in the show world, right?” Addie mumbled to Mal.
“What?”
“I mean, we’ve so obviously been Twilight Zone’d – and since they look like the actors, I figure we’re in the show’s universe, and haven’t somehow time traveled to the past, right?”
“How the hell do I know?” Mal hissed.
“I’m just wondering if they know about Hewlett yet,” Addie whispered.
“What’s this about Hewlett?” Caleb asked, stepping forward again and focusing on Addie.
She turned to Mal, who shrugged. “I – I just thought you might not have heard that Major Hewlett’s taken over for Andre as Head of Intelligence for the British,” she said.
Caleb’s face tightened and he whipped his head around to Ben, who had a similarly grim look.
“How did you come by this information, Madam?” Ben asked.
Because I watch the tv show, Addie thought.
“Everybody’s talking about it in York City,” Steph said quickly.
“Right,” Caleb said, nodding and heading back to his horse. “I’m going to find a way in –“
Ben stepped back and put a hand on Caleb’s chest to stop him, keeping a wary eye on the group of women.
“You can’t go to York City, Caleb. You don’t have a way in or a way out.”
“If Hewlett’s there, Culper’s at risk,” Caleb said.
“No, it’s okay - they’re working together,” Leena said. Ben brought his gaze to hers slowly, and Caleb craned his neck around to look at her. The other women turned to her and exhaled, a collective breath of chastisement.
“What?” Leena asked, her palms turned up in front of her.
“What do you mean ‘working together’?” Ben asked, walking into the group so that he was in front of Leena.
He had his back toward Steph, whose eyes kept straying below his waist.
Addie swatted at her hand as it reached towards Ben’s butt.
Behind them, Caleb snorted. Addie didn’t turn around, but felt the color rising to her cheeks again. She felt as though her face was going to be a permanent shade of pink before the end of the night.
“I was just going to give it a little squeeze,” Steph muttered.
Addie shook her head. “Not the time,” she whispered.
“I mean,” Leena said, blushing even more now that she was inches from him, “that they made a pact to get Simcoe.”
“Simcoe,” Caleb said, crossing his arms again. “That bas-“ he cleared his throat as he remembered the ladies present. “We knew it was a risk –“
“We’ll discuss it back at the camp,” Ben said over his shoulder, studying each of the women’s faces before going back towards his horse. “I’m going to have to ask that you ladies accompany us.”
“I’ve got some rope in my bag,” Caleb offered with a grin.
“Oh, honey, you don’t have to tie us up,” June said.
“Well, unless you want to,” Steph added, matching Caleb’s grin.
Addie wanted to scream. Why wasn’t anybody else freaking out?
“It isn’t far to camp, rope won’t be necessary,” Ben said. “Behave,” he muttered to Caleb as he passed him.
The snow had slowed during the exchange, and was now barely falling. Beside them, the moon was reflecting off of the river, a shimmering path that seemed to stretch endlessly in either direction.
Ben and Caleb rode their horses, the girls walking between the two.
"We probably should have marked where we were," Addie muttered to Mal.
"Why?"
"Because eventually, we're going to have to try and get back, right?"
Mal pulled her head back slightly, a quizzical expression on her face. "Why are you even worried about that now?" she asked. "Just let go for once, Addie. Enjoy the ride while it lasts, and we'll figure out the rest when we have to."
“’Enjoy the ride’?” she shot back. “We’ve been dropped in the middle of a war being waged in a fictional universe where we don’t know exactly what will happen. Maybe we’re not tied up – yet – but we’re prisoners, Mal!”
“But we’ve got such nice eye candy,” Mal pointed out, grinning.
Addie ran her hand over her mouth, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.  They’d all gone crazy. Logic and reason were what she relied on in her real life, and even though what was happening now couldn't be explained with either of those things, she was trying to cling to them.
They passed a sentry post, the men nodding to Caleb and Ben as they passed, staring at the group of women with interest.
"Eyes on your watch, gentlemen," Ben chided. The soldiers grumbled, but turned away, one of them prodding at the fire by their feet.
"Where we gonna keep 'em?" Caleb asked. "Can't cram 'em all in the store room for very long."
"The barn," Ben said after a moment. "We can post guards there, and they'll be out of the weather."
"Yeah, barely." Caleb looked over the group again. "You lot eaten at all today?"
"I could eat a whole cow," Steph said.
"Well, we ain't long on beef, but we'll find somethin' edible," Caleb said.
They arrived at the barn, the noises from the camp clearly audible even though they could not see it yet.
"Take care of the horses, and bring four men we can rely on to post as guard," Ben instructed, dismounting and handing the reins to Caleb. "This way, ladies."
Caleb led the horses into camp, and the group followed Ben in to the barn.
"This is where they brought Abe!" Leena squealed.
"Please, Lord, don’t make me stand anywhere near where they had poor Richard’s body," June said, a hand to her mouth.
Ben pulled the door closed behind them and advanced towards the women.
"How are you getting your information?" he demanded.
"Oh, oops." June put a hand over her mouth as Leena grimaced.
Ben's face was grim. "I will have no choice but to keep you here, under guard, unless you tell me how you have come to know the name Culper."
His eyes went to each woman's face in turn, searching for answers, for any sign that one of them were ready to speak.
One by one, they averted their eyes, shifting nervously.
Ben exhaled sharply, turning at the sound of the door opening. He held up a hand to stop Caleb where he stood, and focused again on the group of women.
"We will have your source," he said, pointing his finger at them.
He walked to the door and drew Caleb back outside.
"See if you can get anything out of them," he said, his tone low. "I've got to tell Washington about Hewlett."
One side of Caleb's face twitched upward with the movement of his mouth. "You want me to go in to a barn full of women and get information from 'em?"
"Behave yourself," Ben huffed.
"I'll be a perfect gentleman, yeah?" Caleb grinned. "Who's to say they'll be able to keep their hands off me, though, eh?" He laughed, hitting Ben's arm.
His words carried easily into the barn. Mal grabbed Addie's arm and gave an excited jump. Behind them, June and Leena let loose a quiet squee.
"But no Ben and his breeches," Steph complained.
They shushed each other as the barn door opened again.
Caleb shut the door, then walked over to the women, his arms crossed over his chest.
"Right," he said, grinning. "Who's first, then?"
“Best. Vacation. Ever,” Mal breathed.
Addie felt like she was going to puke.

Sure, you know what kind of girlfriend you are based on your zodiac sign, but what kind of ex are you? Read on to find out what the stars have to say about your breakup style. Aquarius: The Ex Who Doesn't Look Back: Honestly, PHEW, you're glad things are over now, because you were starting to feel a little cramped. You're super independent, Aquarius, and you need to feel like you have space to be who you want to be, or else you get antsy. You tend to not get bent out of shape after a breakup. After all, your witty conversational skills and charisma make everyone you meet feel super important, which makes it super easy for people to fall for you, HARD. But if someone bores you or can't keep up that signature Aquarius banter, you're out. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Finally booking that trip you've always wanted to talk about. You finally have all this time! What did you even do when you were dating someone? How did you even LIVE? Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You're out and about they walk by. They're super awkward about the whole thing, which you don't really understand, until you realize you were on a date with someone much hotter than your ex. Pisces: The Nice Ex: Selfless Pisces! You work too hard and are far too nice and trusting to everyone. Your friends are stoked for your break up. They're sick of watching your current boo treat you like any less than the queen that you are, and can't WAIT for you to find someone better. You're hella compassionate and kind, so you try to keep things as amicable as possible with your exes. But your sensitive side means that you also feel breakups pretty intensely. Maybe you didn't even love them! But the second you break up, you're left wondering Was this person my soulmate? Will I spend the rest of my LIFE ON THIS PLANET pining for them? Luckily the answer is no. Your kind, compassionate nature is like friggin' catnip for All the Hot Singles In Your Area and you are able to find new boos to take your mind off of things pretty easily. It doesn't work and you see right through it though, so lmao. Taurus: The Chill Ex: You approach everything super logically, so once you figure out that you guys weren't going to spend the rest of your lives together, you no longer care. Your reliable and stable nature means you often stay friends with exes after the fact. While you may think nothing of it (practically speaking, you'd never date the same person twice. On-and-off-again relationships just don't make sense to you, time-wise), just know that every time you hang out as friends, they're running through your entire relationship in their head, wondering if you'll ever give them a second chance. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Shopping for a new wardrobe or curating some other aspect of your life to your typical Taurusian perfection Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You see them like, every day, after you become friends again and they won't STFU about their love life in front of you Trying to Make You Feel Something, but you're chill. Gemini: The On-and-Off-Again Ex: You're super adventurous and fearless so breakups are truly NBD to you...but sometimes maybe they should be? Your indecisive nature and charisma make you a perfect storm for on-again-off-again relationships, but you already know this. You can't help it if you've got a knack for starting organic conversation with anyone, including your ex! It's always good to be chill about breakups, but you gotta remember that sometimes they're for the best, especially when you could be gracing someone new with that signature Gemini charm. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Talking it out with a v. therapeutic vent sesh with your best girlfriends. You decompress best when surrounded by lots of love and verbal affirmations that you are indeed, much better than your ex, and much funnier. (You are.) Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You set up a coffee date later down the line to "catch up" AKA suss out how they're doing post-breakup and are they in a place where you should get back together again? You'll never know unless you ask! Cancer: The Ex That Blocks You on Facebook: I'm not gonna sugarcoat it: breakups hit you pretty hard since you tend to feel emotions very viscerally. And why shouldn't they? You're one of the most loyal and supportive people around, so if someone were to test that trust or commitment, yeah, you'd be pretty hurt. "I don't even care," you choke out between sobs while writing a very harshly worded email that you will never send (you didn't even put their email address in the recipient tab), partway out of fear you'd accidentally hit send and they'd see just how much this actually bothers you, and partway because you can't even admit to yourself how hurt you are. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Going through their tagged photos on Facebook/Instagram to see when/if they're dating somebody new, and WHO IS SHE AND WHAT DOES SHE HAVE ON YOU? Your friends eventually convince you to block them. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: Never, because you go way out of your way to avoid running into them of course. Leo: The Petty Ex: You're not mad at all. You actually don't even care at a— okay, you're a little mad. Maybe not mad, just a lil' insulted that you wasted your time with someone who wasn't as perfect as you. Ok, FINE, you're also really hurt that someone didn't see you for the star that you are. And yeah, it doesn't feel good that you were probably more into them than vice versa. You can't help it though, you're just a straight shooter who doesn't play games, so why play hard to get? It sucks to put yourself out there and have that met with anything but matching enthusiasm. You might try to overcompensate with coolness and try to remain friends, but eventually you realize you were never really friends in the first place. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Trying to make a mumblecore indie short film about your experiences together a la Adam from the last season of GIRLS for some sense of closure. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You invite them to your Broadway debut 20 years down the line, but you're not salty. It's just, like a light "f*ck you" move you know? Super casual. Virgo: The Ex That Can't Let Go: You look for some Greater Meaning in everything — methodically analyzing every move trying to learn from it. You vacillate between crying your eyes out, or thanking your lucky stars the universe hath delivered you from this fuccboi. You continue to go through your old message history looking for red flags after the fact, convinced if you could only find the turning point it would bring you some closure. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Shell-shocked, rocking back and forth whispering "I just don't get it." Your friends GTFO there after two days of trying to convince you everything will be okay. You know that, but you just gotta process stuff at your own pace. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You do a very calculated Hot Girl Pivot™ where you examine and reevaluate every aspect of your life to seem Cooler, Better, Faster, Stronger and broadcast it from all your social media channels until he's the very first viewer on all your Snapchat stories. Libra: The Friendly Ex: Since you tend to be non-confrontational, things usually get *pretty* bad for a breakup to even happen, which leads to a lot of unspoken bitterness for both parties. You'll go out of your way to be diplomatic and make sure everyone knows that you hold no ill will, but really, you'll never forgive them for wasting your time. No matter though! You're charming AF and hotties start falling into your orbit almost immediately after any breakup. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: If you're *really* shook, you go to law school or something. If you're only a little shook, you make a bunch of fire Spotify breakup playlists and waddle around in your PJs pitying yourself for exactly 1/7th of the time you were together, or until a new crush comes your way. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You see them all the time, because you're "friends" and you totally "don't care" that they're now dating a carbon copy of yourself at all haha, why? Scorpio: The Stone-Cold Ex: Damn, where do I start Scorpio? For starters, all your exes are scared of you. You know that right? You're real quick to call someone out and will not hesitate to bring up receipts from like, four tax seasons ago. And good luck to them if they hurt you, because you'll dedicate all your waking hours to getting them back. If an ex is lucky enough to escape your wrath, you'll just go straight for the freeze and cut off all communication with them forever. It's like you never existed. You deal with breakups about as well as you'd think, which is very intensely. You may seem tough on the outside, and you are pretty fearless, but you also tend to beat yourself up about them, wondering if you did something to chase them off/make things fall apart. The older you get, the more you realize, it's not always somebody's fault and that sometimes people just aren't a match, and breakups get easier and easier the older you get. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Flirting with the idea of hooking up with their best friend/roommate/boss to just really drive in that power play that you "won" the breakup. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: When you start parading around the fact that you're now hooking up with someone close to them. Spoiler: it doesn't feel good for any party involved. Sagittarius: The Ex Who Will Always Secretly Hope for Something More: You're so funny and witty that it's a little too easy for you to become friends with your exes after you breakup. Of course you don't mind though. You'll give a ton of lip service about how "you're just friends" till the ends of time, but at the same time, if they ever wanted to pursue something again, you'd sign up right away. But you'll never make the first (second) move. You're stubborn enough to not want to be the one to pursue an on-again-off-again dealio, but conveniently not stubborn enough to move on completely. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Setting your ex up with a friend just to prove how "totally over it" you are. You're not, and you finally realize this when they actually hit it off and you don't know how to backpedal and say you didn't mean for this to happen. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You see them on Tinder and it hits you that they're like, actively looking to date other people, which even though you'd been broken up for months, hurts you in ways you didn't realize you could be offended by? Haha. Nice. You consider moving away or getting really into cycling classes. You wind up doing neither, but it gets easier every time. Capricorn: The Glo-Up Ex: You're honestly stoked to be single again. What a great chance to meet new people and trade up for a hotter/smarter/funnier model. Sure, your friends might think this is a little cruel when you explain your lack of grieving period, but it works. Your ex was a little dull anyways, and they were always gonna disappoint you in one way or another. They probably just couldn't handle you. Sure, it hurts a little, but ultimately you're grateful for the chance to meet somebody who really gets you. And super grateful you don't have to pretend to like the same things anymore. Most Likely to Be Doing This After a Breakup: Dating somebody who is the total opposite of your ex, just to see what it's like. Situation in Which You'd Most Likely Run into Your Ex: You run into each other at a mutual friend's party and you don't even realize it until they text you about it later. Oops! Oh well. You remain unbothered.

“There are 5000 people in Letterkenny.
These are their problems.”
*spits on ground* alright, after autumn
Ask anyone around the area about accuracy. Arctic activities are abundant, astonishing, and A1 on all accounts
Back up,
Before beach bodies bros better bundle up in boots, blankets, and balaclavas, because a bloody bitter breeze’ll blow brisk, blustery, and bleak
Careful,
Correcting common to cocoon in a cap coat and comforter because the cutting cold can consume your character, occasionally create a corpse and continually compress your cock
Don’t,
Don’t you dare dawdle dilly-dally your dick around after dark in December; she’s definitely damn drafty if you’re down a duvet
Easily,
Each and every earthling is environmentally enslaved
Fact,
It’s fuckin’ freezing, it’s friggin’ frigid; you’re fit fer flu in February without fleece, flannel, full-fledged furnace, or fire
Go on,
The god dammed glacial. Go grab gloves or garband gear up for gusts
Hear ya,
Hypothermia! If you don’t heat yer home to half hellish, it’s harsh. Hibernate in a hoodie, hot chocolate, Harry and the Henderson’s
Infinitely icy,
Inhabit indoors, isolated and insulated. Incubate the igloo. Illness is an issue, influenza’s implied, infection’s imminent, immunity is impossible
Just joking,
Aaah just josh and jargon, it ain’t jail, jackets in January’s no jigsaw
Keep calm,
Killjoys keep comfy in their kingdom crushing kilos of Kleenex, keen for cozy kyakin’ with their kids when the key is killin’ kegs with yer kin
Literally
Losers live life locked in their layers, lingering lazy and lifeless, lost like legit loners while the leaders and larger learned let loose
‘muffs,
Earmuffs, mittens, and mucus medicine ‘till mighty maniacal mother nature makes milder, mellower, and meltier moves. Motivate yer mates like the moose Mark Messier, maybe mix a martini for yer maiden if you bet yer match
Nature,
Naturally nippy, but that’s nothin’ new up north. Normal naturistic narrative, not national news
Overcast,
Overcoats and over-shoes, obviouslaaay
Polar,
Parkas and pullovers particularilaaay
Dried quail,
A quantity of quality quilts is quaint and quasi-quintessential to avoid quivering and quash quarreling of quarantine to one’s quarters. Dry quail
Reindeer,
While not raw, rookie, in a rosemary rub roast with radish wrapped in rich rare bacon after removing Rudolph’s red nose
Sleddin’,
Slower sounds, sled’s a synonym fer snowmobile, snowmobine’s a synonym fer sled, SO, a sled is a snowmobile, a snowmobile is a sled. Super?
Terrific,
Trust a traditional turtleneck to maintain a toasty temperature over time
Ugly.
Useful!
Vile!
Valuable!!
Whatever…
Whiteouts and windchills? Walk it off whiners. Withdraw whimpering and wake up, wankers. Wrathful wicked weather? Wear woolens or waterproof wardrobe – warm your wet-work whereby the woodstove. Winter is wonderful, wild and wide
‘xactlaaay,
‘xceptionally,
Yyyyyup,
Yup,
Zero… degrees?
Well, sub-zero, but… aw zip it
