right off the bat
My favourite episode 1 moment?
sokka going " there is no way you are getting me on that " - HARD CUT to sokka screaming on appa.
10/10 sokka
Also Zuko throwing the most *princely* temper tantrum and being the bitchiest 13 yo because aang stole his little doodle diary is sooo on brand for Zuko.
Alsoooo how can aang FLY in the air WiThOuT his glider ???

“my first girlfriend turned into the moon” “that’s rough buddy” is adorable not only because zuko positioning himself as sokka’s friend is simply wishful thinking and desperate projection on his part, but because sokka referring to yue as his girlfriend is also just. incredibly lovely. like, back when they were together in the northern water tribe, yue was trying not to explode from overwhelming lust and affection, but meanwhile sokka was like. “we’re literally just friends. this dynamic is nothing more than an innocuous, platonic friendship. the fact that we’ve kissed and clearly want each other and have spent the past month solely in each other’s company talking little strolls around the city and romantic bison rides on appa (and who knows what else) means nothing as long as you just. repress all the emotions and desires and every last shred of humanity you’ve ever had and convince yourself that this is a reasonable way to live a life.” even while yue was adamant that living in utter denial was intolerable, actually, sokka was just like “i don’t get what the big deal is. repression is so easy.” but then yue changed everything by giving up her mortal life to become a spirit, and in the process transcending the human, patriarchal paradigms that prevented their love from being realized. like, if anything, yue wasn’t sokka’s girlfriend, he was her mistress. but then again, yue never wanted hahn; she wanted sokka, and they both knew it. so by shedding those limitations as she sheds her corporality, she is also giving sokka (as well as herself, of course) the permission for them to redefine their relationship on their own terms, beyond simply being forced to succumb to the patriarchal stipulations that dictated the terms of their love. and who knows whether sokka ever admitted it before, to himself or otherwise, but here, in this moment, he can reevaluate what they shared, and instinctively, he knows. she was his first girlfriend. his first love.

what I say: I’m fine
what I mean: in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the ending theme is a sort of positive foreshadowing that follows you throughout the whole show until, in S3E13 The Firebending Masters, you find out that it’s the rythm to the dancing dragon which Aang and Zuko work through together. In that moment, the show makes you fully realize just how much Zuko was destined from the start to be part of Aang’s support and so much more than what he seemed early on in the show. The ending/dancing dragon theme was there from the beginning to hint that the show was not only about Good vs Bad, but that it was also a story about redemption and about how Zuko would have his own part to play but only after he’d gone through his own journey separate from that of a classic villain character chasing after the main protagonist. In this essay I will-

*late one night waiting for the day of Sozins Comet, Sokka and Zuko are the last two up with the campfire going over the plan one more time*
Sokka: I think that’s it, there’s nothing more we can plan, we just have to do our best and hope that Aang shows up
Zuko: *staring blankly into the fire*
Sokka: Something wrong?
Zuko: Not really… just thinking about the people I left in the fire nation
Sokka: You mean your sister? Your mom?
Zuko: Yeah, but mostly of Mai. I betrayed her and left her behind twice now
Sokka: She saved us from Azula at the boiling rock Zuko, she still loves you, or she wouldn’t have done that. The right person is like that, no matter what you do wrong, they’ll be willing to listen.
Zuko: Like soulmates?
Sokka: Soulmates? What’s that?
Zuko: Well in the fire nation, we have this belief that there is one person meant for you. That across any time or space, no matter what happens, you will end up together because Agni decided it all long before any of us were born.
Sokka: Oh we have something like that in the water tribe, but there’s no word for it. Just a unipkaaqtuat
Zuko: An unip- what?
Sokka: It basically means “story”, I can’t remember how they go now, but you know how it is. One is from a place that hates the other, and they fall in love anyway and basically have to stop a war to be together, we heard a similar story when we were trying to get to Omashu. It’s all cliche really.
Zuko: Why do you say that? I think it’s nice to think about, that there might be someone written for us whatever the circumstances.
Sokka: *staring up at the stars* I believe in free will and science. Not fortune telling. Soulmates are stupid. I love you on purpose
Zuko:…
Zuko: what

I honestly love being in a niche corner of the ATLA fandom as a Zukka shipper LMAO
(I know it’s grown exponentially since the resurgence in 2020, but it’s still on the more niche side of ATLA ships)
Like of course there are bad eggs in any corner of the internet, but 99% of the time, it’s genuinely so chill over here because we’re all just enjoying a fun fandom ship! We know they aren’t canon and we usually aren’t seeking out ship wars. We’re just here to relax and have a good time!!
Along this line, I also love being a fan of the “Hakoda adopts Zuko” trope because it’s so lovely over there too!!
This is why I like to find my nice little spot(s) in a fandom and just stay there lmao - I get to have all the best parts of fandom culture with minimal toxicity😌
