200 13th-Century Names

I've made a thing and thought others might be able to get some use out of it. If you just want the d100 tables, scroll down to the cut and skip my rambling as to what this list is. Short version, it's a d100 table of male names and a d100 table of female names, taken from 13th-century English records and trimmed to minimize names that were used within the last 140-odd years.

While working on my Dungeon23 project (updates collected here, by the way), I was looking for names for my NPCs, and stumbled upon the Henry III Fine Rolls as a source. This is a digitization and indexing of records from 13th-century England that include a lot of personal names. It contains references to a database they made that sorts these names by popularity and other factors, but the database apparently hasn't been maintained, because it's gone. For a while, I was just picking names from articles about that database, but I started to worry I was going to run out (due to my tendency to name any corpses of dead adventurers in the dungeon just in case someone likes to cast speak with dead). So I went to their index of names, which is great if you're looking for a specific person, but not useful if you just want a list of personal names, and decided to use their data to make a couple d100 tables for myself.

I went through the index and typed all the names into a spreadsheet. Then, to give the list a more medieval feel, I sorted them by how often they appeared in the Social Security Administration's data on baby names. (I know that's a bit US-centric, but to my knowledge there is no global database to use for this purpose.) Then I removed all the ones that appeared most often on the baby names list -- I figured if you were rolling on a table of medieval names, you'd be a bit disappointed if you got "John" or "Mary". (Incidentally, the following names appear both in the Fine Rolls and on the SSA's list of the top 10 (male and female, so 20 actually) baby names for 2021: Emma, Oliver, James, Ava, William, Isabella, and Henry.) I used the data going back to 1880 for thoroughness.

In the case of male names, this meant I was able to remove all the names that appeared in the SSA records. So the names in that table were (probably) not used at all in the U.S. between 1880 and 2021. (The SSA apparently doesn't keep records on names that appear less than five times in a given year, so it's possible there were a few of these guys around, but not many.) This is because, as you may expect from medieval records, there were more than twice as many male names in the records as female names, so there were more left over after cutting the ones that appeared in the SSA data. So twenty of the female names on the table were also used in the US since 1880, but not often.

I did not make any effort to sort names by etymology, so the list includes French, Welsh, Scandinavian, &c. names, not just names that have an English origin. Multicultural, for "pretty much just one quadrant of Europe" values of "multicultural". I don't think that should break anyone's immersion or anything; medieval people traveled around more than people tend to think.

Speaking of breaking immersion, I also cut the following names off of the list because I thought they might be distracting to your players if you randomly assigned them to an NPC -- or to your audience if you use this to name characters for a writing project. I'm not going to say there's something wrong with these names, just that they're the sort of thing you would want to only deploy on purpose:

Also, to note, I've kept them separated into 100 male names and 100 female names because the source data was pretty firmly entrenched in the gender binary. Obviously you can do what you want with your characters' genders, though, and if you want to completely ignore the division, feel free to combine them into a single list and roll a d20+d10 for a d200 table.

Pairing: Emily Prentiss x reader

Summary: After Emily becomes more and more distant, not seeming to care anymore about school or your relationship - and you decide to confront her

You stretch out your arm to Emily’s side of the bed and you’re met with a cold mattress once again. You sigh and roll back over and pick up your phone, the time showing 2.36 am. Both you and Emily have class at 9, so you start to wonder when she’ll get home. This had become kind of a habit by now, you having dinner together but then she would leave. And every time you asked where she was going it was the same answer:

“I’m going to Jordan’s for a party”

“Me and Tara are meeting up” 

“I’m just going out for a while, I won’t be long”

But the thing was, she was always gone for long. Coming home around 1 or 2 in the morning and not going to class the next day. So eventually you stopped asking, and saw how she just didn’t seem to care about anything anymore. Not about her grades and school or even about you and your relationship. As you settle down in bed again you hear keys jingling in the lock, the door opening and Emily tripping over a pair of her shoes as she walks in

“Damn it” you hear her whisper to herself

She walks into your bathroom and as she walks by your bed she whispers once again:

“Y/N babe are you awake?” 

But you don’t answer her, you don’t have the energy. When you don’t reply she sighs and walks into the bathroom and closes the door quietly. As she has closed the door you stare into the ceiling, even though you can’t see anything in the pitchblack room. You just lay there staring in the dark and think. Think about Emily and how you want to help her, but don’t know how. You lay on your side again and try to go back to sleep, deciding on how to approach Emily and try to see why she’s acting the way she is.  

When you get back in your dorm at 11 after your 9 am class - Emily’s laying in bed scrolling through her phone, looking like she just woke up. You put down your bags and pick up your books and laptop, getting ready to do the homework for the day. You sit down at your desk and start up the laptop and pick up one of the books, start reading and taking notes. 

“Good morning” Emily suddenly says

“Morning” you reply, not looking up from your book 

“Where were you?” she asks “you weren’t here when I woke up”

“Class” you reply shortly

“Oh okay” 

You put down the book and look at her “Emily why aren’t you going to class anymore?” 

“Not this talk again Y/N” she says and gets out of bed “Can you just stop being in my business? It’s getting annoying”

“I’m sorry that me caring about you is annoying” you say with a low tone 

“Babe, that’s not how I meant”

“Well you said it” you say and turn back to your book

It’s quiet for a while, the only thing you can hear are the keyboards on your laptop as you type until Emily speaks:

“What’s with you anyway?” 

“What do you mean what’s with me?” you ask

“I mean you’re always nagging me about class and stuff, like you always ask where I’m going when I’m going somewhere” 

You put down the book and turn around to her again “It’s called caring Emily, I care about you that’s why I ask” 

“Well I don’t need you to care, I can fend for myself” 

“It’s not that easy Emily, you are my girlfriend so of course I care” 

“Well you don’t have to!” she suddenly yells, and you’re taken back by her harsh tone 

You’re not sure how to reply, so you stand up and start walking towards her where she’s sitting on the bed 

“Em” you start “Are you sure you’re okay?”

She doesn’t reply, just lets out a quiet sob and you see how her body starts shaking. You walk up to her and crouch next to her:

“Can I touch you?” you ask gently and she just nods as an answer

You sit down next to her and take her hand and start rubbing circles on top of her hand, and you sit for a while until she shifts her position - hugging you tightly and sobbing once again. 

“I’m sorry” she whispers

“It’s okay baby” you reply “But please talk to me, I’m here to listen” 

She pulls away, looking down in her hands and sighs before speaking “It’s my mom. She puts so much pressure on me and expects so much of me, and I can’t handle it” her voice breaking

She collects herself before speaking again “So I decided to just give up, on everything. School, my grades and you, just to show my mom that she’s right about me - that I am a failure” 

You place your finger under her chin and make her look up at you “Emily listen to me” you start “No matter what your mom says, you are not and will never ever be a failure” 

“But I am” she protests “I just showed my mom that she was right, and I have been horrible towards you”

“None of that now” you stop her, you lay down on the bed and pat on the spot next to you and she lies down - and you wrap your arms around her.

“I’m sorry” she whispers again

“You don’t have to apologize” you say

“I do though” she replies “I have been a horrible girlfriend, when all you did was caring about me” 

“Thank you” you say, and you lay in silence for a while, you stroking her back

“You will get back on your feet again” you say suddenly

“How am I supposed to do that?” she asks “I am so far behind in every class” 

“I’ll help you” 

She sits up “Really?

You sit up as well “Really” you smile at her 

“You truly are the best girlfriend in the world Y/N” she says 

“Well you’re not too bad yourself” 

The both of you burst into laughter and lay down again, and you just lay there in silence - looking into each other's eyes. She moves suddenly and gives you a kiss, and you kiss her back. 

“I love you” she says 

“I love you too” you reply

Writing a woman character in her 20s? Go to SSA and pick randomly from  the top 100 or 200 girl names from 1999 or 2000. You can’t really go wrong.

I'm an older trans guy who plans to go stealth and would like uncommon English names that would be believable to have been given by my parents at birth. I like 1 or 2 syllable names best. I'm ethnically Chinese, child of immigrants and only speak English fluently even though have my Chinese name as my middle name. Help please?

Something that might be a good reference is the SSA’s Popular Names by decade list. It lists off the top 200 from every decade going back to the 1880s. It can be really helpful for people looking for names that are believable for their age / that were in rotation when they were born

Life is really kicking my ass right now. Due to a long and convoluted series of events, we’re forced to pay the outrageous mortgage ($760) on the house we’re living in (it’s my mom’s but she lost Medicaid coverage since she owns it but doesn’t live here so now she can’t afford the mortgage because she has to pay over $200 a month for insurance out of her pittance of a disability/retirement check). It’s still leaps and bounds cheaper than rent in the area, and because I’m on disability myself, my husband and I can’t save up enough for an apartment or a down payment on a house. Thing is, the house is only worth like $38k in its current state (out of $72k market value), and if we could buy it, we could get the mortgage down to like $400/month, but it’s in such poor condition that the only loan we could possibly get is a rehab loan. If the cost of the repairs to bring it to “average” condition come to more than $28k, we can’t get the loan, even though we have a downpayment with help from my husband’s foster mom. On top of this, I got injured about two months ago, causing my husband to miss a day of work; which when he works 4 long-ass shifts a week, one day makes a hell of a dent in his paycheck. This coincided perfectly with our car breaking down, which ended up being the fuel pump, for a lovely $800 of repairs, plus the suspension broke when the mechanic lowered it off the lift because it was apparently rusted orange! If it hadn’t been for the insurance payment from the asshole driving a giant truck who backed into me earlier this year, we wouldn’t have had the money at all, and the bumper/fender still aren’t fixed from that so there’s no way I’ll pass inspection this month. Which oh, my license expires this month too, so there’s another $50 expense. We haven’t been to the dump in two months because of this, so the trash and recycling are piling up, and it was $40 a month to have your trash picked up last I knew, which was YEARS ago so it’s probably way more now. We’re also behind on nearly every bill because of this. Our electric bill has more than tripled because we’re using space heaters to keep the house at a livable temperature, since we ran out of fuel in April, the day before our heating aid allotment expired, and on a fucking Saturday so we couldn’t call for an immediate shipment (the 24/7 line also said they were closed, so fuck them). We ran out because our dryer broke right after the 2 year warranty expired, so my husband was having to use the heater to dry his work clothes. We’re two billing periods behind on our water bill. Our gas bill is a month overdue. The only bill we’re NOT behind on is the internet, because he’s a computer science major and losing internet is not an option. I owe social security over $600 still, out of an $800 overpayment that was bullshit in the first place (because apparently getting married on the 26th of a month makes me ineligible for that entire month’s check as well as the next one; long story short I was my mom’s dependent and receiving SSA and marriage made me no longer her dependent- no more SSA. Not like I planned the date or even had a ceremony, it was just dinner in our friend’s apartment who happened to also be a JP and I wanted to be married before our daughter was born for ease of legality). The hospital is hounding me for bills I don’t owe them because their database migration failed miserably and they lost years’ worth of insurance information so they’ve been billing Medicare instead of Medicaid, which I lost eligibility for right along with the SSA. I’ve spent 4 years trying to convince DHHS that I don’t have Medicare any more. I’ve brought stamped papers from Social Sec saying I don’t have it. I’ve signed statements. It’s been taken off my case twice, and now it’s back again. I’ve got my reeval for Medicaid due on the 15th. I’m losing my mind. The only positive thing out of all of this is that I’ve also got my “are you still mentally ill?” eval for SS this week, and hoo boy am I in a bad way, so at least there should be no doubt there.

Livehouse Rankings

I want to talk about livehouses a little bit. The type of places a group/artist is playing can tell you a lot about them! How many fans they have, how they perceive themselves, how others perceive them, etc. Idols might perform only in certain venues, and rock bands in others, or such.

Say you are a band. You think that if you play a gig, about 500~ fans will come. So, what venue size do you aim at? A venue that fits 300 people. You could easily sell it out, and say things like, ‘Our band quickly sold out the concert!’ But people will also know you are playing a small venue which will affect their expectations of the band; ‘they can only play at such small venues, they’re not successful.’

Or, a venue of 750 people? Probably, it won’t sell out, and on ticket sales, you make a loss. However, you might be able to make it up with merch sales. And playing in a bigger venue will attract attention, if it makes you seem like you’re on the way up. ‘This band is getting successful lately, I should check them out.’

Or alternatively, you could join up with other artists and hold a two/three-man concert. Three bands your size could sell out a 1500 capacity concert hall! And you’d have the possibility of attracting other bands fans. However, multi-artist concerts will mean much more organisation behind the scenes, and might even turn fans away if they have no interest in other bands.

These are things you should think about when supporting artists. All artists try and media-play to make themselves look better. An artist saying ‘They’ve been selling out one-mans for five years!’ means nothing if they’re playing at Urawa Narciss. Or alternatively, artists who could sell out larger venues but choose to play smaller ones for the atmosphere. Like VAMPS choosing to play 10 days at ZEPP instead of a couple of night at Budokan. Or AKB playing daily at their theater.

Here is a rough ‘ranking’ list of livehouses. I only really know about Tokyo live houses, and a few Nagoya/Osaka... Since most of my knowledge is from visual-kei fandom, this is somewhat band-biased, as opposed to idols, but similar rules apply.

First tier would be... non-official venues. This is places like bars etc which have live music areas but aren’t full-time venues. So absolute beginners and hobbyists might start here.

Shibuya O-crest (200), Shibuya O-nest (250), Ikebukuro CYBER (300), Takadanobaba Area (450): CYBER and Area in this tier despite their size because of their reputations. CYBER is just awful, Area will let anyone hold a oneman even if they’re clearly not going to sell out. O-crest & O-nest are small but part of the Shibuya O-group which has imo a fairly nice reputation. This tier is ‘I am starting out but fairly serious’.

Ikebukuro EDGE (250), Ruido K venues, Shibuya REX (300), Harajuku Astro Hall (400): Bands who are starting to gain a dedicated following. The venues are slightly less shit, and have a bit of history behind them.

Shibuya O-West (600), Shinjuku LOFT (550), Shinjuku BLAZE (800), Shibuya QUATTRO (800): Bands capable of pulling in larger audiences. At this point bands can start thinking of doing music full time. These venues are big enough to allow a half-decent concert DVD to be filmed.

LIQUIDROOM Ebisu (1000), Shibuya O-East (1300), Kawasaki Club CITTA’ (1300), Akasaka BLITZ (1300): The over 1000 capacity venues! They’re all pretty nice! At this point you’ve probably made a name for yourself within your music genre. Shibuya-AX was also at this tier before it closed RIP ;-;.

Shibuya Public Hall (2300), Shinkiba Studio Coast (2400), ZEPP TOKYO (2700), Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall (2600), NHK Hall (3600), Tokyo International Forum (5000): If you are doing oneman’s here you’ve made it! A standard group is doing well for itself at this level. Artists at this level are probably charting on Oricon.

Budokan (14000): Budokan gets its own tier because... It feels like it’s the ‘realistic aim’ for a lot of bands. To play SSA or TD you really need to be very popular with national recognition. Most musicians won’t get there. But Budoukan is big, but still within reach a for a full-time artist. A lot of bands will do, say, a nation-wide tour at 1-5k venues with a final at Budokan. I don’t like Budoukan because to get the full 14000 capacity you need to set the stage in the middle of the arena with audience 360° around the stage, which always look awkward.

Saitama Super Arena (37000) & other arenas, Toyota Stadium (45000) & other stadiums, Tokyo Dome (57000) & other domes: Success is undeniable. Tokyo Dome is the absolute top in terms of prestige. Almost certainly the result of a long and successful career.

International Stadium Yokohama aka Nissan Stadium (70000): Another special case. Even if you can afford to hire it, even if you think you can sell out... The stadium is very restrictive of who they allow to play there, you practically have to be invited.

There are of course lots of other venues! But these are names I see coming up a lot, especially amongst the types of groups that are popular internationally? I feel they are the biggest names of their level (ie there may be plenty of 1000+ venues but O-east, LIQUIDROOM and BLITZ are names I see a lot, etc)

This is an idol/AKB blog, so lets talk about them a little bit... SKE, NMB and Nogi have done ZEPP tours before. ZEPP venues are a subsidiary of Sony so it’s no surprise to see Sakamichi series there. They’re the only livehouse ‘brand’ I know of that stretches across Japan; as opposed to Shibuya-O or Ruido-K which are fairly close to each other.

Shibuya-AX was a fairly large large venue that AKB started holding Request Hour in 2008, but they weren’t selling out until they got big in 2010. Really wonder what made them choose to hold 4 concerts over 2 days at a 1500 seat venue, at a time when their first week sales were 15k~ and they were on the verge of disbandment. It’s a similar size to the other venues they held concerts in at the time, I wonder if they were selling those out. If they couldn’t fill AX in January ‘08, did they fill NHK Hall at the end of the year? But it’s true partenering with King Records turned their luck around so who knows. After AX shut RH was moved to Tokyo Dome City Hall which is twice the size of AX so RH is obviously doing just fine.

Because of the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, many many venues are getting refurbished, to the point artists are complaining about being unable to find places to perform. AKB is included in this! I wonder if that’s the reason why almost every event AKB has held the past the past two years has been at Tokyo Dome City Hall, or if a 3100 capacity hall is the best that current AKB can do.
