Why are the lions trans gendering?

Its been a hot second whoops. Okay! So in nature there's actually a lot of instances of animals acting or presenting like the opposite sex. But these lions are neat because, as far as we know, there's not a natural advantage to it.

You may have seen this picture, it circulated quite a bit back in 2018

That's Bridget, a lioness from the Oklahoma City Zoo that just grew a mane out of nowhere. They did tests and found that Bridget's blood contained a higher level of cortisol, which regulates metabolism and the immune. The zoo said the results probably mean that she has a benign tumor that's producing the hormones, but that her health is excellent.

That's not the first time we've seen this though, in 2014 Geoffrey D. Gilfillan studied a lioness with an underdeveloped mane by the catchy name of SaF05

He said that she did stay mostly female in her behavior, staying with the pride, mating with males, she portrayed behavior more typical of males, like roaring and scent marking. While lionesses do do this, it's less common.

The biggest belief is that these lionesses have an excess of testosterone, which is what causes males to grow their manes. It's been noted that if a male is castrated it loses the ability to grow a mane. In that same vein a maned lioness in the national zoological gardens of south Africa had found excessive levels of testosterone due to a problem in the ovaries. Once they removed the ovaries the lioness lost it's mane, further supporting that theory.

This idea is also backed by the fact that the five known maned lionesses are infertile, a known consequence of high levels of androgens such as testosterone in females. And since all five known maned lionesses come from the Okavango region, they think there's a genetic component.

In the end, aside from being unable to get pregnant, all the lionesses were perfectly healthy and will live long lives!

one of my favourite ever lion studies was looking at masculinized females in botswana, and one of the study lionesses was called SaF05

SaF05 had a mostly complete light mane, mated with both males and females, roared and scent-marked in a fashion associated with males, however acted socially as a female when it came to hunting and patrolling
