Ten Most Selfish Cricketers in History
It is difficult to stay on top of the highest level, no matter which era of cricketers we are talking about. It takes years of hardwork, sweat and determination to get there and some cricketers in the past have been accused of misusing their positions at the top. While it is understandable why they’re so possessive of their power, it’s never acceptable to keep a player ahead of the team.
These are the cricketers who have earned the “Selfish” and “Arrogant” tags during their playing days. Incidentally, most of these cricketers are some all-time greats of the game and ones who have been in major power for a long time. Some of them did set a wrong example, but a lot of them got hammered although the intention was not to be selfish.
Here is a list of cricketers who have been termed selfish for a number of reasons. All of these names have been termed selfish for their personal acts or for some of their antics on the field, which didn’t go down well with fans.
1. Fake God of Cricket: Sachin Tendulkar
Tumblr media
The demigod of masses, the cult legend of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar has achieved everything possible during his career as a cricketer. The highest International run-scorer of all time has his own legendary moments on the field, but there were many other instances which hampered his status big. All of it was forgotten with his retirement, but some scars still remain out there.
Many accused him of prolonging his career for getting to the elusive 100th hundred mark and even during the game against Bangladesh where he eventually got it, his strike-rate was considerably below par. India ended up losing that match in the Asia Cup, one of the few times they encountered a defeat against the Tigers.
2. Brian Lara
Tumblr media
Someone who stands in the same bracket as Sachin Tendulkar among all-time greats, Brian Lara rocked the cricketing world with his class and exuberance and off the field, he was a gentleman par excellence. He was known to play marathon knocks, but that backfired on occasions for the great man.
During two of his greatest knocks against England where he scored 375 and 400, many experts accused him of being selfish for personal records. West Indies had a chance of winning the game during the 4th Test in 2004 where he got the 400, but they batted for a little too long and it didn’t give bowlers enough time to kill the game.
3. Geoffrey Boycott
Tumblr media
Although he was termed one of the finest of his generation, Geoffrey Boycott was always a central figure in various controversies. He was known to be an introvert who never really liked going around and having fun during his cricketing days, but was always a strict figure with his ideology and never changed it, even when it was necessary.
He never wanted to play aggressively even when it was necessary for the team, someone which pissed the fans and his management on occasions. There were also rumours in a game that the English coach had sent Ian Botham to run Boycott out so someone else could come and accelerate the scoring.
4. Sunil Gavaskar
Tumblr media
A bit like Boycott, Gavaskar’s style of batting never changed, until his only hundred during the 1987 World Cup game against New Zealand where he scored his first and only hundred in limited overs. He was just way too slow for the format and played one of the most forgettable knocks in cricket history during the first-ever game in World Cup history.
No one can ever forget his 175-ball 36 against England while chasing a target in excess of 300. The format was still new, no one had a precise clue as to how they should approach the game, but there wasn’t any intent to win the game. India only won a single match in the first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979, which came against East Africa.
5. MS Dhoni
Tumblr media
MS Dhoni is one of those rare cricketers who has as many haters as lovers. While many consider him an all-time great, there are others who just don’t appreciate what he’s done for the country, which is very unreasonable. But some incidents during his career as a captain or as a batsman had some controversial calls being taken, which earns him a name in this list.
During the second Test against New Zealand in 2013, with the Kiwis five down in the second innings and in deep trouble of losing the series, Dhoni kept a very defensive field, which didn’t include even a slip. Brendon McCullum got enough time to settle in and walked his way through an unforgettable triple ton and India could only draw that game. There were many innings with the bat as well which were a bit too slow for ODI cricket, most recent of them came against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup
6. Richard Hadlee
Tumblr media
Sir Richard Hadlee, one of the father figures of New Zealand cricket, had his own share of controversial and selfish moments during his career which truncated his image. He shortened his run up during the final few years of his career to play for a longer time, thus become a lot more ineffective as a bowler. He was also a stubborn captain as many old articles by historians suggest and barely listened to anyone.
He also used records and statistics as the primary tool to select cricketers, a strategy which not many liked. The rumour has it that he never watched a lot of cricketers play before picking them up. He also never shared the prize money which he used to receive for winning player of the tournament awards, which always used to be shared between teammates.
7. Shahid Afridi
Tumblr media
Shahid Afridi‘s status as a cricketer is bigger and better than what his record should command, but the Pakistani fans love him and not many can question that. He was an all-time great in their history and revolutionized the way this game should be played. But during his tenure as a captain, he was often accused of selecting cricketers he personally liked and ignoring them who he disliked.
These accusations of him working on his alter-ego never faded away from newspapers. He even came back from retirement many times just to try out his luck, to see if he had anything left in him. No other cricketer could’ve had such opportunities, but going by the status he has, he got those chances and experts termed as a misuse of power.
8. Steve Smith
Tumblr media
Despite knowing what Australian Cricket has been accused of so many years, Steve Smith following the wrong path had hands-on experience of one of the most nonsensical and selfish acts of all time. After getting hammered by experts and fans for his involvement in the DRS scandal against India, he should’ve learned to not meddle in such practices.
But a few months later, he was involved in the infamous sandpaper gate, which saw him get a one-year ban from professional cricket. He was the captain of that team and it is also said that he forced youngster Cameron Bancroft to use the sandpaper, which didn’t go down well with the fraternity. Well, good performances with the bat can always make people forget it and that’s what happened in his case.
9. Steve Waugh
Tumblr media
Steve Waugh was an aggressive and straight forward captain, who till date has one of the most sensational records as a captain. But he also had a strangled relationship with some big names, especially Shane Warne and even dropped the leg-spinner for some big matches for personal reasons although he was a very important player for them.
He was also accused of not playing for the team and battling for personal records. He tried to increase the number of notouts to better his average, thus putting the wickets of tailenders at risk. Ian Chappell also famously said that Waugh was too selfish a captain to bring the best out of most cricketers
10. Douglas Jardine
Tumblr media
No cricket admirer would be unaware of the infamous Bodyline scandal, which sent shockwaves back in those days and still continues to be an unforgettable chapter in cricket history. Douglas Jardine, the English captain, was one of the primary masterminds behind this plan and despite understanding the danger behind it, he went ahead with it.
Some of the English players back then were against the plan, according to some old articles written in the 30s and 40s newspapers. But Jardine was stubborn to make them do it and ended up being on the wrong side when the issue became very critical. Although he captained the side for 15 Tests and achieved great numbers, he is still remembered by one word, “Bodyline”.

Mumbai T20 League: Batting side should be penalised 7 runs if rules are breached,…
Tumblr media
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar feels just like a bowling outfit, a batting side should also be penalised seven runs if they breach rules of the game during the course of a match.
Tendulkar’s comments came following a bizarre controversy that rocked the second semi-final of the Mumbai T20 League between Sobo Supersonics and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburb on Saturday.

#700 FlashBack Time for 700th blog of BoloorSportsMania..  :-)
Tumblr media
Topic for #BoloorSportsMania blog #700 had to be something special. I have witnessed varied sporting moments in last 4 decades which had a 7th heaven impact on me. India winning 1985 Benson and Hedges in Australia, beating Australia in 1998 and 2001, world cup win in 2011, Andre Agassi completing his grand slam in 1999 French open, Nadal beating Federer in his own game when Swiss legend was at his peak, Federer’s sheer tennis talent, Tiger winnings majors after majors, Faldo winning 3rd Masters in 1996, Leander paes winning bronze medal in 1996, Susheel Singh winning back to back Olympic medals, etc. List is endless. But the event which had maximum impact on me was 1985 Ranji trophy match between Karnataka and Goa. India were having a dream run in ODI. They had won 1983 world cup . They followed that by winning Benson and Hedges cup in Australia where 4 other top teams had participated. India had outclassed Pakistan in finals. Though Ravi Shastri and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan were stars of that event, there was a certain wicket keeper who had caught everybody’s imagination. His name was Sadanand Vishwanath. He had caught a few catches with his body parallel to ground which was a great sight to see.
Coming to the Ranji match which I was highlighting, Karnataka were hosting Goa in Bhadravathi in Dec 1985. Sadanand Vishwanath was part of that Karnataka team. There was news that legends Gundappa Vishwanath and Brajesh Patel would also play in this match. Yours truly was studying was studying 3rd standard in St Charles convent in the same town Bhadravathi. Match was being played in Vishvesharayya Iron & Steel Ltd Ground. My dad was working in VISL only. It was a 3 day match played between 7-9 Dec (Sat-Mon). Schools were declared holiday on Saturday and Monday so that kids can watch the match. Being in a small town had its own advantages and this was one of them. News was that all players would halt in VISL guest house as there was hardly any lodges in Bhadravathi those days. We all tried to get a glimpse of the players but there was security as expected. We all gathered near the stadium on 7-Dec early morning to get a glimpse of the players. We all were shouting for Sadanand Vishwanath as soon as Karnataka players took the field.  Goa won the toss and chose to bat. It was a long first day as Goa scored plenty of runs. Raghuram Bhat and Lobo were Karnataka’s key wicket takers. Me and my friends used to take break every 1 hour to have some snacks or juice or candy. Dad had given me 2 Rs per day which I thought was cool. Plain juice candy used to cost 10p those days, cream candy was 15p and sugarcane candy used to be 25p. During school days, I hardly used to taste sugarcane candy as  I thought it would be better to have 2 juice candy instead . For snacks, there was charmuri ( rich cousin of bhelpuri), roasted groundnuts and cucumber chat. My favorite was cucumber chat. I started off with that. They would slice a cucumber piece, add a layer of mint chutney, add grated carrot, squeeze a bit of lemon and finally add a bit of mixture. My mouth used to water just having a look at it. This dish is  my favorite even now. I make it a point to prepare it during summer once or twice. Post that chat, I had sugarcane juice on my friend’s suggestion. That was heavenly. I literally forgot that match was still going on. When we went inside, 2 wickets of Goa had fallen. This sequence almost repeated entire day. Every time, we used to have some snacks, wickets would fall. Me and my friends found it a bit strange.
We entered stadium 1 hour before start of play on 2nd day which happened to be Sunday. Goa were quickly dismissed early in the morning for 322. N Phadte scored century for Goa. Raghuram  Bhat picked up 4 wickets for Karnataka. He was Puttur based player and we were all proud as we belonged to South Canara as well. Karnataka started poorly as Sadanand Vishwanath was dismissed for duck. Srinavasa and Khancilkar then smashed Goa bowlers all over the park. We were a bit hesitant to go for snacks break on 2nd day as Karnataka players were batting. We were a bit scared that it would make Karnataka batsmen get out !!! We took breaks when players took break. I tried all varieties of snacks but when it came to choice of candy, I always preferred Sugarcane candy. In fact by end of 2nd day, Candy man used to keep sugarcane candy ready as soon as he saw me J . Karnataka declared at 335 later in the day. They made this score in just 58 odd overs. Run rate of 5 in test was unheard those days. Karnataka declared as they wanted to get full points.
3rd day was super fun as Karnataka dismissed Goa for just 136 runs. Goa opener’s name was S Tendulkar who had got out for duck in 2nd innings. We used to make fun of him as he couldn’t make as many runs as his name suggests. When Sachin Tendulkar of Mumbai played for India in 1989m I initially thought it was this Goa opener. But this Sachin Tendulkar made Tens of Tens of Tons of Tons of runs. In the meanwhile, I hardly took sugarcane candy break but wickets were falling.  So I was a bit surprised. My brain was functioning a bit differently at the age of 8 J. During lunch break, I asked the candy man if he was sending sugarcane candy to players . His answer was amazing. He said he was not aware that cricket match was going on inside. He thought it was football match. From his perspective, he was very happy that he was able to sell 150 sugarcane candies in 2.5 days . Otherwise, he was just able to sell 20 per day.  I was happy that I had contributed too. Post match, Karnataka went for the victory. They needed 124 runs to win and they won by 6 wickets. I just had 15p pending with me. I went to candy man and asked for 1 final candy. He gave sugarcane candy. I told him that I had 10p less. He told it was a gift from him. I was thrilled more with this candy than watching Karnataka beat Goa handsomely.  I had 7 sugarcane candies in 3 days and 7 cucumber chat. I have a fascination for 7. Being born in ’77, Flashback of this 7th heaven moment is a perfect write-up for my blog #700. Moments will come and go but  such days will stay in memories for ever. Cheeeeers !!!!

Have you ever had a coach?
This article is written by Ramanuj Mukherjee, CEO, LawSikho.
If you ever had someone who was responsible for you getting better at something, then the answer is yes.
In most cases, our parents are our earliest coaches.
People who played sports seriously really understands the value of a coach.
So do I. I have a coach. I spend a sizable chunk of my monthly income on having a coach.
I also spend a lot on books, courses, apps, content subscription etc that increase my knowledge, provide me with critical and timely insights and enhance my core competencies.
I am always on the lookout for things I can do to get better at my work.
Still, having the coach is probably the most important decision I took in January 2018. Most expensive also. Its goal oriented, and each and every goal I have taken on with my coach has been realised!
In 2019, I am glad that I found a coach. I have no idea how I would have survived the year without her!
Working together, we turned around a year that could have been the biggest disaster of my life into something I will look back as a beginning of something amazing.
Doubling revenue in 6 months? Achieved.
Surviving the disaster caused by NUJS and coming out stronger? Achieved.
Launching new courses in record time? Achieved.
Ensuring better coordination and working relationship with my co-founder? Done.
Developing a habit of working out regularly? Done.
Ensuring that personal crisis or depression does not interfere with my work? She did it.
Actually, she didn’t do it. I did it. But she helped me plan things out meticulously, helped me to foresee the problems ahead of time, made me put in Plan B and Plan C where I would have gone into the battlefield without a detailed battle Plan A left to myself, and pointed out my glaring flaws so that I could work on them.
You are never too good to have a coach. Even all-time greats like Michael Jordan, Sachin Tendulkar and Roger Federer needed coaches. When you want to be a top performer, you would better get a coach. Top CEOs and MDs also have coaches. Here is an article in the Entrepreneur magazine which talks about it. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Erich Schmidt all used coaches too.
Let me tell you how I finally got a coach. I was familiar with the concept that even an entrepreneur can have a coach. But I finally got the impetus to do it when I saw Games2Win founder Alok Kejriwal asking for recommendations for coaches on Facebook. If Alok, who is nothing short of a visionary and role model in my eyes, need a coach, then how come I don’t have one?
In the next one week I found my coach. It was really expensive for me at that time, but I went for it anyway. You can’t expect amazing coaches to come cheap. You get what you pay for.
Let me just tell you a story that demonstrates the real importance of a coach.
One day a tiger fell into a pond while drinking water and got stuck into the mud. It struggled a lot to come out but the more it tried more badly it got stuck in the quicksand like mud. Then it noticed a cow had also fallen into the mud, but it wasn’t struggling at all. It was basically chilled out.
The tiger was shocked. He asked, why are you not worried? You fell into the mud. This is so dangerous. How are you going to save your life?
The cow said “Don’t worry about me, I have a master. When he sees in the evening that I haven’t returned home, he will come looking for me and find me here. He will then rescue me. You, on the other hand, need to worry very much.”
The tiger was aghast. He was the king of the jungle, the most powerful, magnificent, cunning animal. However, when he falls into the mud, the humble cow has a better chance of survival, just because it has a master?
That’s the role a coach plays in our lives.
This is why we always include an element of coaching in our premium law courses. I know finding a coach who can teach you law and help you to improve step by step will be hard, if not impossible, and definitely very expensive.
At LawSikho, we make it easier, cheaper and more accessible. Here is an example on how we coach our students live on complicated legal tasks.
If you can hire or find a coach who will guide you and work with you to become the champion that you want to be then go ahead. Your second best option, however, as far as legal training and coaching to learn legal skills is concerned, will be LawSikho courses.
Here are some courses for which enrollment is closing in the next 6 days. These are our most popular and successful courses. Don’t miss the chance to join them. Enroll immediately and start studying.

Sightseeing in London
I went sightseeing in London with my family and we had pre-booked our tickets and assistance for getting me on the train. When I arrived at Wolverhampton Railway Station my brother and I went to the waiting room and informed them about our booking. I also asked them to inform Euston Railway station also known as London Euston to let them know when I was arriving so the staff could take me off the train.
We then were advised to go to the platform, a few minutes before the train was due to arrive at the station, a member of staff came with a foldable ramp and waited with me and the rest of my family. Once the London Euston train had arrived,  the member staff attached the ramp to the accessible entrance of the train and down to the platform and then my brother pushed me up the ramp and onto the train and placed me in the designated wheelchair space.
Tumblr media
It was a pleasant journey however, I found it difficult using the bathroom facilities on board the train as I found it difficult getting my manual wheelchair into the cubicle because it was small even though it was an accessible facility for wheelchair users.
Tumblr media
When we arrived at London Euston the staff came with the ramp and got me safety off the train and on to the platform. We then headed our way out of the station and made a 20 minute journey approximately by foot to Madame Tussauds. I was being pushed and all my family were taking it turns to push me and I really felt for them because even though it was more or less a straight road it is still hard to push my wheelchair as it is quite heavy but if it was not for my family I would not have been able to come to London and so I will be always grateful for that.
Tumblr media
When we arrived at Madame Tussauds, we were refused entry to the attraction at the time we had booked because only three wheelchairs were allowed in at one time due to health and safety reasons and there were already three wheelchair users in the building, therefore this then resulted in us being delayed entering the wax museum for about an hour.
Tumblr media
This all occurred because when my sister booked and reserved a wheelchair space the customer services took a long time to respond to her and when they did, they did not fully respond to what was requested on the booking form.
Instead of waiting for about an hour until we could enter the museum we went and had lunch at Wetherspoons (A chain of pubs). I ordered chicken burger and it came with chips. It tasted delicious, then after we headed back to Madame Tussauds and we entered the museum.
It was very busy and it consisted of three floors. I particularly enjoyed the Bollywood section and I took photographs with the waxwork of one and only and of course my favourite Bollywood star of all time, Shahrukh Khan including, Amitabh Bachchan and Hritik Roshan. Also, I took photographs with Bollywood actresses including Katrina Kaif, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit, just to name a few. I also took a photograph with the current prime minister of India Narendra Modi, including Indira Gandhi and with freedom fighter, Mahatma Gandhi, in the world leaders section. I also took a photograph with Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, from the sports section. Other stars included Michael Jackson, Wolverine, from X-Men and British singer Cheryl Cole.
Tumblr media
                                                                                             Shahrukh Khan
Tumblr media
                                                                                                Madhuri Dixit
Tumblr media
                                                                                             Narendra Modi
I also watched a 10 minute 4DX movie by Marvel Studios. It did not have a title and the story was that different characters from various films like Spider-Man and the Hulk were trying to save London from being attacked. I thoroughly enjoyed this short film, it was fantastic.
I really enjoyed my time at Madame Tussauds and it was a great experience.
Our next destination was Piccadilly Circus and we went by black cab. When we arrived, I first saw the famous advertising boards that have featured in both Hollywood and Bollywood films. It was amazing to witness such a famous location live in front of you, absolutely amazing!
Tumblr media
We then decided to go for a coffee at Ole & Steen, it was a few minutes by walk and my family were taking it in turns to push my wheelchair. It was a very up-market bakery and it was very modern and had great interior. I felt like I was in the American television sitcom ‘Friends’ at Central Perk, having a hot chocolate and a delicious cake.
Tumblr media
Our next port of call was Leicester Square, it was walking distance whilst my wheelchair was being pushed by my family. We went to the place where they have the famous movie premieres and we also took some family photographs and also browsed the shops nearby. We also went to M&M's World, it was amazing browsing in-store and I was in complete heaven surrounded by chocolate everywhere I look. In addition there was also a Christmas market so we browsed some stalls and took some family photographs. I very much enjoyed myself.
Tumblr media
The next destination was Trafalgar Square. This was also walking distance. This was an amazing location with great scenery and I had a wonderful time there. Afterwards, we all then went for an evening meal at Tiger Tiger and my main meal tasted amazing.
Tumblr media
I could not leave London without having an Oreo milkshake from Ed’s Easy Diner, situated directly in front of London Euston Station. It tasted amazing!
Tumblr media
We then caught the train back to Wolverhampton. I had a great time in London and it was also a memorable trip.
Getting around London whilst in a wheelchair is quite a challenge because it is very busy and some  of the tube stations were not wheelchair accessible and therefore we either had to get to our destination by foot whilst my wheelchair was being pushed by my family or go by taxi. I felt frustrated as I would have liked to have been able to travel on the tube to experience it.
